Observations made from laboratory analysis of samples of fine-grained argillaceous materials (shales) subjected to various changes in moisture content have been correlated to loss of strength in the rock material. This reaction to a change in in-situ conditions (subsequent to mining) at a mine site combined with the observed relationships of surface-disturbing subsidence features at locations where the predominant overburden material is fine-grained, provides a predictive tool for the subsidence engineer.

In recent years, the need has become more and more accute for a high capacity, high intensity, wet magnetic separator for the concentration of finely ground, paramagnetic minerals. As a result of this increased interest, extensive test work has been conducted at our Central Test Laboratory, and the basic design for such a separator has been established. Three units have been developed to comprise a full line of this equipment: (a) Series 4L (laboratory), Figure I, is manually operated to permit maximum flexibility and precise control of each variable, with a capacity of 4 gallons per minute. (b) Series LOCC, Figure II, functions by automatically controlled feeding and washing cycles, and has a capacity of approximately 1.0 tons per hour. (c) Series 200CF, Figure III, basically consists of an annular pole box, rotating through the high intensity magnetic field. This unit has a capacity of approximately 20 tons per hour.

Laboratory investigations on the possibility for magnetic separation of sulphide minerals are reported. A survey of several sulphide ores and flotation concentrates shows that magnetic separation in most cases is not a suitable primary method of beneficiation. However encouraging results have been obtained in concentrate purification. At the Boliden complex sulphide ore concentrator in Garpenberg a Allis-SALA MK III carousel High Gradient Magnetic Separator (HGMS) is used together with a small flotation circuit to recover sphalerite lost to the galena concentrate in lead flotation. The result after four years of refining the HGMS process, show increasing zinc recovery and enhanced quality of the lead concentrate.

Exploration of the Big Island trona beds by Stauffer Chemical Company started early in 1959. During the intervening time, Stauffer Chemical Company of Wyoming has developed a Large trona mine in this southwestern Wyoming area and has increased the over-all production of soda ash from natural sources by nearly one-half million tons per year. The trona, which is a hydrated sodium bicarbonate mineral, lies some 800 feet into the sedimentary rocks of the Green River formation. Present production is approximately 850,000 tons per year being extracted by means of a room-and-pillar mining system. Conventional coal mining equipment is used with some modification to accommodate local conditions. The mined and crushed ore is hoisted to the surface and processed in an on-site refinery. Refined soda ash is shipped to widely separated locations in covered hopper railraod cars. Construction in progress at Stauffer's plant will double the present capacity.

The Cuyuna range, located in east-central Minnesota, consists of a sequence of argillite, siltstone, iron-formation, graywacke, slate, and quartzite of early Proterozoic age. Manganese-bearing materials occur within the iron-rich strata of the Trommald Formation and the Rabbit Lake Formation. Computer-assisted resource estimates, based on exploration drill hole information, indicate that the Cuyuna range contains a minimum of 176 million metric tons (Mt) of marginally economic manganiferous rock with an average grade of 10.50 weight percent manganese. The calculated 18.5 Mt of manganese on the Cuyuna range could supply this country's needs for this important and strategic metal for 16 years. An additional resource of 6.9 Mt of manganese metal is available in the lower grade deposits. The majority of these calculated resources are extractable by current surface mining techniques.

Despite further declines in production for some producers, 1986 proved to be a landmark year for the asbestos industry. The key event was the adoption of The Asbestos Convention by the Inter- national Labour Organization (ILO) and its 150 member countries. The document, entitled "Safety in the Use of Asbestos", reaffirms the international consensus on the "controlled-use" approach to chrysotile asbestos regulation. The decision of the ILO has come at a critical point in time. It represents a major turning point and provides an important building block for the long term future of the asbestos industry.

"Speakers and attendees of the 2016 Cutting Edge Conference could not be faulted for keeping one eye on the presentations taking place at the Hyatt Regency at LAX in Los Angeles, CA on Nov. 7 and 8 and another on the results of the historic election in the United States that took place on Nov 8. While there was certainly interest in the presidential campaign, there was also a great deal of interest in Measure M on the California ballot. Measure M, which passed easily, is a half-cent sales tax increase that will fund the most ambitious transit expansion in Los Angeles County history.In the coming years, the ballot measure will transform a traffic-choked region by funding the construction of nearly a dozen new rail lines with an estimated $120 billion raised in four decades. Among the projects that could come to fruition are a twin-rail tunnels project through the Sepulveda Pass and new connections in the city.During the update on West Coast projects, Bill Hansmire summed things up with a slide asking “How much work is there on the West Coast,” and his answer was “Billions.”From Seattle, WA south to Los Angeles, there is already a lot of work for tunneling and underground construction experts, and Measure M ensures that there will be plenty of work for decades to come.Currently, The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) has three rail projects underway that were funded by Measure R in 2008 — the Regional Connector, the Purple Line subway extension and the Crenshaw/LAX Line that are designed to alleviate the traffic pressure with an eye to more solutions.Measure M is the fourth sales tax increase to fund transportation in L.A. The mechanisms involved in the adsorption of modified thiol-type collectors on sulfide minerals have been investigated in the present work. These collectors belong to the broad classes of thionocarbamates, thioureas, thiophosphates and thiophosphinates. They differ significantly from the traditionally used thiol-type collectors, such as xanthates and dithiophosphates, in terms of structural features that involve either the introduction of an additional oxygen donor or the alteration of electron densities on donor atoms. Electrochemical studies suggest that the adsorption of these classes of collectors is probably the result of a coupled reaction of the EC-type, involving an initial electron transfer step (E), followed immediately by a chemical reaction (C). Thus, the overall adsorption process is controlled by both the E, and pK of the system. The role of structural features in changing the interaction of the donor atoms with sulfide minerals is also discussed.

Three years ago a research program was initiated at the University of Saskatchewan to develop seismic surveying techniques for use in the Precambrian geological environment. The success of the reflection method in many younger geological settings suggested that this is the technique which would be the most suitable for experimentation. A successful adaptation of this technique to the Shield environment would make mapping of rock formations possible to much greater depth than is possible at the present time with any other applied geophysical technique. This presentation attempts to illustrate the advances which have been made in this program and will provide some insight into future plans. The field investigations were limited to the Flin Flon basin near to the town of Flin Flon, Manitoba (Fig. 1). This area was chosen because the surface geology has been mapped in great detail and it is a very important base metal producing region. It is an ancient sedimentary basin with some characteristics similar to areas where the reflection method has been successful.

The control systems engineer is often faced with the problem of designing tests or experiments where the cost of obtaining information is expensive. This is true in aerospace as well as in process industries. In these situations the details of test design should be carefully evaluated before any test is executed so that the maximum amount of information is obtained for the effort expended. In recent years there has been a steady trend towards increased automation, In the process industries this has resulted in extensive review of process variables and, instrumentation techniques, development of more accurate system mathematical models, and extensive investments in complex control system as well as completely automated plants. When planning and developing these systems, where each measure of a process variable is usually expensive, it behooves the design engineer to give considerable thought to the details of test design before instrumentation is procured and installed so that the maximum amount of information can be obtained for the expense incurred.

"INTRODUCTION Mining is a fundamental part of the historical and economic development of a country. In Colombia, this is reflected from pre-Columbian jewelery, to being now one of the first exporters of coal worldwide, in 2017, the Colombian mining sector contributed approximately 6% of GDP (Ministerio de Minas y Energía, 2017). Coal, nickel, gold, platinum, emeralds, limestone, salt, phosphate rock, clays, siliceous sands and to a lesser extent copper, manganese, magnesite, barite, gypsum and various types of ornamental rocks, among others are produced (UPME, 2016). The contributions of mining activity in the economic dimension is more measurable, on the contrary in other dimensions, as the social and environmental, for this, every day there are new proposals and tools oriented to strengthen how to evaluate the contributions in terms of the sustainability and responsibility, with the aim of quantifying, concreting and non-utopian, to improve the life quality of a community and not only to comply with reporting and gaining prestige. Colombia has a generalized increase in the mining sector where the levels of informality and illegality are evident only 10% of mining activity is legal (UPME, 2014), also, the mining sector is accused of human rights violations, high levels of inequality, poverty and the affectation of ecosystems due to bad environmental management, among other situations (ACNUDH Colombia, 2015). This problem has generated rejection to the realization of the mining activity in many places of Colombia. At this point, it is important to clarify this problem is more complex, different actors are involved in this conflict, but it is an evidence that is needed a sustainability model for specific realities such as the Colombian mining. This situation in the current mining activity, is similar to the chemical industry situation three decades ago, because of an extensive problem in relation to repeated work accidents, natural disasters and indications as a highly polluting and unsustainable industry, with the aim of improving, not only this public perception, but also in the way of carrying out the business activity. Thus, in 1985, the Canadian Chemical Producers Association released the Responsible Care Program (RCP) (ICCA, 2015). Being aware that companies were responsible for the affected lives in some way by the operation and needed to improve workers safety, environmental protection and most importantly how legal persons should comply with the law, but go beyond this. RCP is most recognized sustainability initiative in the chemical sector, companies associated are recognized for having high quality standards, continuous improvement, visibility, corporate ethics, environmental and social management (ACC, 2015). In addition, to meeting the objectives is set out the creation of a model that increasing reputational sector levels. This initiative is considered to be a worldwide successful case of reporting corporate responsibility indicators and contributions to sustainability from the industry sector to local development (BASF Group, 2016)."

The Guillermo Gaviria Echeverri tunnel and its access roads project in Antioquia, Colombia is a mega infrastructure project that includes a road network with the longest tunnel in Latin America and several short tunnels, the latter being the focus of this study. The design of the project required careful consideration of several special factors, such as the tunnels’ steep slopes of up to 5%, high fire load of 100 MW, bidirectional operation, and short lengths that make it difficult to place ventilation equipment. The combination of all these parameters cause a challenging design problem for the ventilation systems and smoke control of the short tunnels. To address this challenge, a risk assessment study was conducted to support the design of a new and innovative ventilation strategy that deviates from relevant guidelines and standards, like the Austrian RVS [1][5][6] or the German EABT [8] in order to provide a customized solution for this particular project. This strategy resulted a cost-effective solution, that allowed a reduction in the number of required jet fans and at the same time reaches or reduces the risk level compared to traditional ventilation strategies.

Aggregate resources should be considered primary factors in urban development. Resource planning is essential because land values, previous construction, or zoning restrictions often preempt exploitation of aggregate deposits within an urban area. Sequential land use practices allow development of areas prior to urban development. Population and aggregate consumption trends in Austin, Texas, indicate that substantial quantities of reserves will be lost to future development. Aggregate materials are present in nearby seas. However, a comparison of transportation and reclamation costs indicates that reclaiming land after mineral extraction can be significantly cheaper than transporting materials longer distances.

U.A. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) coal dust compliance data sometimes shows high silica levels at roof bolters. However, it is unclear whether this silica normally originates from the bolter itself or from other dust sources upwind of the bolter research studies to answer this question at individual mines have been conducted. However, operational practices vary from mine to mine thus, the information gleaned from any one study cannot be accurately extrapolated to describe silica dust sources in most mines. In this paper, three decades of bolter dust research are reviewed the results showed that, while inadequate maintenance on the bolter dust collection system can result in excessive dust, more likely reasons for high silica levels are inadequate ventilation of the mine entries being bolted and dust traveling downwind from the continuous miner to the bolter. Rubidium and cesium were discovered by Bunsen and Kirchhoff about 100 years ago. These two elements are by no means as abundant as sodium or potassium. Their occurrence in minerals is widespread, but usually as minor constituents. There is no known specific ore containing rubidium, but rubidium is found replacing the. other alkali metals in .some minerals.. Perhaps the highest concentration of rubidium found in one mineral is in lepidolite, KLi(OH,F)2A12Si3010, which contains from 0 to 3.5%*Rb20. 0n the average, lepidolite contains about 0.5% Rb20. Other sources of rubidium are carnallite, KMgCl3?6H20; pollucite, H20.2Cs20.2AI203.9SiO2; rhodizite, R20.2A1203-3B203; biotite, H2K(Mg,Fe)3A1(Si04)3; sea water, rivers, marine and fresh water organisms, soils, and plants. Cesium, even though it is the least abundant. of the stable alkalies, has a specific ore. Pollucites a hydrous cesium aluminum silicate, may con¬tain as high as 42.5% Cs20, although again, the average Cs20 content is about 25% among the handful of known deposits. Other cesium-containing minerals are lepidolite and carnallite. Rubidium and cesium are very much like potassium in chemical properties, consequently, they are hard to separate. Because of the difficulty in obtaining pure cesium and rubidium compounds coupled with the scarcity-of supply, prices were high and the two elements enjoyed little industrial use. A geomechanical rock mass classification or RMR is currently being used for the evaluation of an LHD mechanized mining system versus the conventional block caving method. The successes and failures of a Panel lS-19 LHD test block on the 2315 level can be attributed to the geologic and geomechanical zonation present. Trench blasting, caving procedures, and sequencing are other factors that were also considered. Lessons learned from the P.lS-19 test block have been used to alter the design for future LHD production blocks on the 2615 level. These modifications are designed to maximize the pillar and insure an adequate draw connection.
