The Tessenderlo-Kerley Leachprocess has been shown to be effective in the removal of residual copper from molybdenite concentrates. Concentrates of varying mineralogy, including those containing relatively large amounts of chalcopyrite, have been successfully leached on laboratory and pilot plant scales. The lixiviant system is ammonia andammonium bisulfite with air / oxygen addition. An abrasive is added which greatly enhances the kinetics, and it is subsequently screened out and reused. The dissolved copper is easily recovered using existing technology. Extraction profiles, reagent consumptions, and mineralogical data are presented.

The use of chemical reagents in flotation has been studied in great detail, e.g. (1, 2, 3, 4). Important progress has been made on the understanding of surface chemistry concepts involved in flotation. However, such scientific studies are often very complex even for rather simple idealized systems. Therefore, the deve- lopment of predictive or quantitative tools for plant engineering evaluation is still in the evolutionary stages. Until further progress in fundamental work is achieved, the operating engineer is faced with semi-empirical physical testing of reagent changes on several sizes of the actual equipment under study to be confident of the economic viability of any change.

The iron mine and beneficiation facilities of Marcona Mining Company are located on the coast of south central Peru. The facilities include an open pit mine, crushing, concentrator containing grinding, magnetic-separation and flotation facilities, pelletizing plants and a completely self sufficient infrastructure. Total production capability is about 10,000,000 DLTPY, of which almost 6,000,000 DLT result from the fine-grind magnetic concentrate. Over 1,500,000 DLT of fine-grind concentrate is obtained from processing high-pyrrhotite ore. Although the orebody contains quantities of oxidized primary ore and transitional ores (mixed magnetite and hematite), the principal ore is predominantly a coarsely crystalline to fine grained massive magnetite.(l-3) In the primary ore the major impurities found are silicates and the iron sulfides- pyrite and pyrrhotite. Sulfur levels typically average about three percent although levels of five percent are not unusual and some ores contain up to ten percent total sulfides. In general the silicates and pyrite are readily rejected from finely ground primary ore by magnetic separation and very basic froth flotation processes. The high iron, low sulfur concentrate produced is particularly suitable for production of high quality oxide pellets. However, pyrrhotite is not removed from the magnetite matrix by either of' these simple beneficiation methods.

The design of cover systems for reclamation schemes in tailings requires estimation or determination of tailings materials properties such as compressibility, shear strength and consolidation characteristics. It is very difficult and expensive to obtain truly undisturbed tailings samples for laboratory testing. In situ testing methods have been developed for economically obtaining large amounts of information. Two of these methods are described, the piezocone and the flat plate dilatometer. Both of these methods provide a rapid means of detailed material identification in a nearly continuous fashion for the entire depth investigated. The equipment is described and typical data from a uranium tailings impoundment is presented. The results are compared and the advantages and disadvantages of these methods are discussed.

Whilst coalmining in the United Kingdom has been synonymous with longwall mining practice there have been changes in recent times which have enabled not only an extension in the length of the face to be worked but also in the ability to extract both thick and thinner seams. Additionally the industry has taken a positive view in the extension of retreat methods of extraction applied for different reasons both to particularly thick and specially thin seams. To permit development of a flexible programme to meet these diverse needs, it has been necessary to design machinery along with mining systems specially suited to these requirements. In reviewing current UK thinking special emphasis is made on the extraction of thinner seams generally of higher quality coal at moderate depths with a commentary on some recent results.

The main objective of batch grinding modeling is the estimation of the product particle size distribution over time or specific energy input to the mill. So far, the developed analytical methods require often complicated calculations which are timeconsuming. Thus, more simple approaches that allow the reliable prediction of the complete product size distribution need to be developed. In the present paper, an approach, based on the population balance model (PBM), that reliably predicts the product size distribution is proposed. In order to enable this, the simplified form of the fundamental batch grinding equation was transformed into the well-known Rosin–Rammler (R-R) distribution, thus allowing the determination of the breakage rate for each grinding period. A time-dependent breakage rate framework was developed where the traditional linear theory of the PBM is considered a partial case. This approach allows the deviations from the linear theory to be categorized and the degree of the acceleration-deceleration of the breakage rate to be predicted. Modeling results were validated by laboratory grinding studies using two homogeneous materials, quartz and marble, and one heterogeneous, a limonitic laterite. The experimental data revealed that grinding exhibits non-first-order behavior and the degree of deviation from the linear theory depends on the tested material. The reliability of the proposed model was validated with the use of the distribution modulus n, the a value of the breakage rate parameter, and the optimum n values that minimize the sum of the differences between the experimental and estimated particle size distributions.

The problem of pollution of water by mine drainage is at least as old as the mining industry itself. However, research on the formation, composition, treatment, and abatement of mine water is a relatively recent historical event. At Bituminous Coal Research, Inc., acid mine drainage control has been an important area of work since 1944, at which time BCR began sponsorship of research at West Virginia University. The work at West Virginia University involved a detailed study of the acid mine drainage problem and led to the identification of iron oxidizing bacteria as important factors in the formation of acid mine water. The results of this research were summarized in 1954 by Temple and Koehler (1) who concluded that "no practical solution for the problem" of controlling acid mine drainage is yet known.?

Cuando se diseña y operan minas de carbón subterráneas con el método de cámaras y pilares, es siempre difícil obtener un buen equilibrio entre la prevención de subsidencia de la superficie y la obtención de un alto coeficiente de recuperación. En este trabajo se propone una metodología de diseño aplicando la teoría de arco de presión y se detallan los principios y modelos matemáticos involucrados. Se desarrolló un programa de computadora a fin de realizar el proceso de optimización del diseño y fue aplicado a la examinación de un caso documentado en el que había sucedido una falla masiva de un pilar en cascada sobre un área grande en una mina de carbón poco profunda. Los resultados indican que el método de diseño propuesto puede ser aplicado para prevenir la subsidencia y a la vez obtener un alto coeficiente de recuperación para operaciones mineras de cámara y pilares.

This paper describes the application of a cyclonic flotation column (CFC) for coal cleaning. A CFC makes use of centrifugal force to create a density gradient in a column to augment the froth flotation process. In a CFC, a series of angular helical inserts is attached to the wall of a conventional column and coal slurry is mixed with a series of impellers attached to a central shaft. The hydrophobic froth concentrates near the center shaft and moves upward, while the relatively heavy hydrophilic particles concentrate near the wall and are guided downward by the helical inserts. Results of pyritic sulfur removal from an Upper Freeport coal during CFC flotation are discussed in this paper.

Every mineral project or mine is based on a geologic entity-an ore (mineral) deposit. A well-defined mineral deposit and its associated geologic characteristics are the only aspects of a project that cannot be altered. Mine plans can be modified to exploit the deposit using alternative approaches and yielding similar results. A variety of processing methods also are often available producing generally comparable results. Major modifications can be made to other aspects of the project without substantially changing project economics. However, all engineering and metallurgical aspects of a mine must be accommodated to the spe¬cific location and geologic characteristics of the deposit. Geologic data and interpretations form the foundation for both mine evaluation and mine production by providing esti¬mates of reserves and essential information for mine planning and process design or control. Proper geologic work requires a keen awareness of and an ability to anticipate the technical requirements of geotechnical engineers, hydrologists, mining engineers, metallurgists, and other specialists. The processes of magnetic separation and cyclone classification are common in the mineral processing industry, and frequently the two are found in consecutive stages in the beneficiation of a magnetic mineral ore. The application of a magnetic field across the cyclone, to combine the two stages in treating a magnetic mineral pulp, has been investigated with a view to possible practical applications in the mineral industry The results of this research reveal that magnetic particles can be manipulated within the cyclone body by the application of a magnetic field, and that magnetic grades may be significantly upgraded with recoveries in excess of 90%.

"Production of industrial minerals remains important to the rural economy of New Mexico. In 2014, some 240 mines were registered in New Mexico, including 25 industrial mineral operations and 189 aggregate operations. New Mexico leads domestic production of potash, perlite, zeolite, and travertine. Other production includes aggregate, humate, pumice, gypsum, salt, common and fire clay, scoria, limestone, fly ash, cement, magnetite, silica, and decorative stone. New Mexico has potential for additional production of industrial minerals. One company is exploring for garnet. Cretaceous black sandstones in the San Juan Basin have drawn interest for titanium, rare earth elements (REE), and zircon. Other REE deposits are being explored. REE-Th-U veins are found in the Gallinas, Capitan, and Cornudas Mountains and Laughlin Peak-Chico Hills. Recent exploration has occurred for beryllium in the San Mateo Mountains, Iron Mountain, and Victorio districts. Companies also are examining High-Ca limestone and High-Mg dolomite for potential development. Aggregate continues to be important in urban areas and along highways. INTRODUCTION Industrial minerals and rocks are literally the building blocks of our way of life and they are an exceptionally diverse and vital group of raw materials that underpin almost all aspects of human activity, infrastructure, and standard of living. Industrial minerals and rocks are used in the manufacture of many products, from ceramics to plastics and refractories to paper. Although industrial minerals permeate every aspect of daily life, their presence and their role are typically invisible. A widely used definition of industrial minerals and rocks is “any rock, mineral, or other naturally occurring substance of economic value, exclusive of metal ores, mineral fuels, and gemstones: one of the non-metallics” (Bates, 1975). This definition includes the important construction materials sector as well as specialized industrial minerals, but complex interactions between consumer industries produce a number of apparent anomalies to this definition. Some metals are included as industrial minerals because their use is industrial rather than as a metal. Sulfur is now predominantly extracted as a by-product of cleaning natural gas, one of the world's major energy fuels. Production of industrial minerals has been and remains important to the rural economy of New Mexico. Industrial minerals constitute nearly 40% of the more than $2.8 billion generated by mineral production in New Mexico in 2013 (Table 1, see APPENDIX). "Float dust deposits in coal mine return airways pose a risk in the event of a methane ignition. Controlling airborne dust prior to deposition in the return would make current rock dusting practices more effective and reduce the risk of coal-dust-fueled explosions. The goal of this U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health study is to determine the potential of open-air water sprays to reduce concentrations of airborne float coal dust, smaller than 75 µm in diameter, in longwall face airstreams. This study evaluated unconfined water sprays in a featureless tunnel ventilated at a typical longwall face velocity of 3.6 m/s (700 fpm). Experiments were conducted for two nozzle orientations and two water pressures for hollow cone, full cone, flat fan, air atomizing and hydraulic atomizing spray nozzles. Gravimetric samples show that airborne float dust removal efficiencies averaged 19.6 percent for all sprays under all conditions. The results indicate that the preferred spray nozzle should be operated at high fluid pressures to produce smaller droplets and move more air. These findings agree with past respirable dust control research, providing guidance on spray selection and spray array design in ongoing efforts to control airborne float dust over the entire longwall ventilated opening. IntroductionCoal mining processes produce airborne dust that naturally deposits on the floor, roof and ribs of mine airways. These fine dust particles, termed float coal dust when smaller than 75 µm in diameter, are deposited in the return entries of coal mines and can be reentrained by pressure waves induced by methane-air explosions (Rice et al., 1911; Nagy, 1981; U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), 2006). These particles are also those most likely to participate in coal-dust-fueled explosions, which can potentiate and propagate explosions resulting in extensive damage. In order to meet compliance requirements of at least 80 percent incombustible content in the composition of material deposited in mine entries (U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), 2016), coal mines apply an inerting agent, specifically, rock dust (Harris et al., 2009). Should methane be present in the mine atmosphere, the required fraction of incombustible content is further increased by 0.4 percent for each 0.1 percent methane. The removal of airborne float coal dust (AFCD) prior to deposition is an approach intended to make current rock dusting practices more effective by increasing the proportion of inert material to combustible material, resulting in a lower risk of coal-dust-fueled explosions."

This paper presents the results of large-scale fire experiments on evaluating the performances of carbon monoxide (CO) and smoke sensors at low ventilation velocities. Experiments using three different combustibles — conveyor belt, coal and diesel fuel — were conducted in the experimental mine at the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Bruceton Research Facility. A total of eight sensor stations were located downstream of the fire with each station containing sensors for CO, smoke, carbon dioxide (CO2 ), oxygen (O2 ), humidity, barometric pressure and temperature, as well as two airflow sensors. The airflow velocity ranged from 0.22 to 0.26 m/s (44 to 51 fpm) in the tests. The response times were recorded for the CO and smoke sensors at each sensor station when smoke and gaseous products of combustion from each burning combustible reached the station. The response times of the CO sensors were used to determine the appropriate sensor spacing in the belt entry with a low air velocity. The performance of the smoke sensor was found to be affected by the high humidity in the experiments. The results on proper selection of sensors and the determination of sensor spacing at a low ventilation velocity can be helpful for ensuring sufficient early fire warning for underground workers, thereby improving the health and safety of miners.

NMBGMR has been collecting data on uranium mining districts, mines and mills since it was created in 1927 and has converted years of historical data into a relational database that can be imported in ArcMap. The database includes information on mining districts, mines, mills, geochemistry, photographs, and bibliography. The available data includes location, production, reserves, geologic, geochemical, resource potential, and other data. The NURE stream-sediment data provides geochemical analyses for >27,000 samples collected in New Mexico during 1970s. The NURE hydrogeochemical data provides analyses for water samples. ArcMap includes location of individual ore bodies as polygons and incorporates the mines and NURE data as individual site locations. The purposes of these databases are to provide computerized data that will aid in identifying and evaluating resource potential, resource development and management, production, and possible environmental concerns, such as physical hazards (i.e. hazardous mine openings), indoor radon, regional exposure to radiation from the mines, background geochemical data and point-sources of possible pollution in areas of known mineral deposits.

El Abra is one of the world’s premier copper de-posits. The project is located in northern Chile, 140 km (87 miles) inland from the Pacific coast. It has the same geologic age and structural setting as the world-class Chuquicamata copper mine located 42 km (26 miles) to the south. The current development plan for El Abra extracts798 Mt (879 million st) of high-quality oxide ore. This will require building a solvent extraction/electrowinning(SX/EW) facility that can produce 225 kt/a (248,000stpy) of cathode copper. This will make El Abra the largest SX/EW copper operation in the world, and the world’s seventh-largest copper producer.

The Silver Peak Range North Wilderness Study Area was deleted from the list of US Bureau of Land Management lands in Nevada to be considered for wilderness designation. This decision was based in part on the US Bureau of Mines mineral investigation of the wilderness study area which found indications of precious- and base-metal-resources. The study area lies between the Silver Peak and Dyer mining districts of west-central Nevada. The Bureau examined 13 mineralized sites, most of which were previously unknown and unclaimed. These sites are along two zones that cross the study area from the Silver Peak mining district to the Dyer mining district. The two zones transect a volcanic center of fractured and altered rocks that contain epithermal veins of quartz and calcite with gold, silver, and base-metals. At the surface, these veins are poorly defined. Exposures of the more than forty veins examined were as thick as 17 ft and as long as 1000 ft. Samples from these veins contained significant amounts of precious- and base-metals-as much as 0.02 oz per ton gold, 2.1 oz per ton silver, 1.0% copper, 2.6% lead and 0.4 % zinc. No vein large enough or of high enough grade to be classified a mineral resource was disclosed by the sample data. However, most do have indications of precious- and base-metal-resources at depth. Subsurface exploration of some of the veins is recommended.

There has been a recent revival of interest in concentrated coal/water slurries as a substi¬tute for fuel oil or for coal/oil mixtures, particularly in electric power generation. The idea is not a new one. Coal/water slurries were transported by pipeline in the U.S. in the early nineteen-sixties, and the Black Mesa coal pipeline has been in operation for several years, while in Germany, coal/water slurries were being burnt for power generation in the early nineteen-seventies, as described by Merten and Höner (1972). Since coal is not a pure substance but a carbonaceous mixture, the different chemical and physical behavior of coal/water dispersions from different deposits must be understood in order to optimize the properties of the result¬ing slurry fuels. Since minerals which are minor constituents of coal may also strongly affect slurry properties, coal chemistry may vary considerably even within a single deposit. Thus it is unlikely that there will be a single formula for optimizing the slurry properties of all coals, and even the answer for coal from a single source may change with time.

"1. INTRODUCTION Grade separation of roads and railway tracks is an effective method for solving traffic-related issues in cities. However, in urban areas where the existing traffic infrastructure is already overcrowded, construction of new roads often faces problems especially in the proximity of existing structures. This paper summarizes the construction plan and results of new road tunnel construction in the proximity of the piers of elevated tracks on the Tokaido Shinkansen railway.2. SUMMARY OF CONSTRUCTION AND ISSUES Auxiliary Route No. 26 as specified in the Tokyo urban plan is a project by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, covering the construction of a new road with a total length of 22.3 km currently on the way to completion. In Shinagawa Ward, Tokyo, Auxiliary Route No. 26 is designed to cross the railway tracks of the Yokosuka Line and the Tokaido Shinkansen Line, so for this project, the East Japan Railway Company (JR East) was commissioned to design and build a road crossing under the railway tracks (Sumiyoshi Underpass). Figures 1 through 3 show a sketch of the Sumiyoshi Underpass. The Sumiyoshi Underpass was planned as a two-lane tunnel for vehicles, which was to cross under the railway tracks of the Yokosuka Line and the Tokaido Shinkansen Line at an angle of 70 degrees. The structure concerned is a single-story single-span box culvert structure with the following dimensions: 11.5 m wide, 7.7 m high and 31.6 m long. The Tokaido Shinkansen Line tracks were constructed on a girder-type elevated bridge built in the 1960s, and the foundation piles of the piers (P7 and P8) in the proximity of this crossing box culvert of RC structure were constructed using an earth drill method. The crossing structure for this project is located extremely close to the piers of the Tokaido Shinkansen railway tracks, with a minimal separation of 0.4 m, and the most significant issue of this project was construction in a manner that would not obstruct the normal operations of the Tokaido Shinkansen (Figure 4). Initially, we considered installing a temporary earth retaining structure in the proximity of the piers, cutting the ground and building an RC box, but concluded that it would be very difficult to apply this method because of probable excessive displacements in the Shinkansen railway piers. That is why we decided on the use of a non-open cut method in order to minimize the impact on the piers."
