The new, 2.600 m long pipe under the river Elbe in Hamburg/Germany required for 2 traffic lanes, emergency lane and space for utilities a boring diameter of 14,20 m(46,6 ft). According the geology (glacial deposits consisting of clay, sand and marl, all containing big boulders) a Slurry-Shield with crusher was selected. With a minimum cover of 7 m and a maximum pressure of 5,6 bar extensive ground treatment was necessary to make the drive feasible. The machine contains a lot of new developments. The drive was finished in spring 2000 so all experiences can be reported. A special risk sharing contract avoided completely litigation.

U.S. feldspar output sold or used in 2004 was estimated to be 790 kt (871,000 st), valued at $43 million free-on-board plant. This was below 2003 and about the same volume as 2002. The strong housing market in the United States maintained demand for ceramic tiles, plumbing fixtures, and fiberglass insulation requiring feldspar and shipments of glass containers increased by about 4 percent. Imports of ceramic tiles and plumbing fixtures continue to increase, taking the place of U.S. produced goods, and the feldspar required to make them. Output included flotation concentrates, feldspar content in feldspar-silica mixtures, potash feldspar and aplite.

Ordinary portland cement (OPC) is the key pozzalonic component of the concrete mix widely used as a construction material worldwide. B illions of tons of OPC are used in the construction industry each year. However, calcinations of limestone and silica that produce OPC also produce almost an equal amount of C O2 during the cement manufacturing process. Thus, OPC production accounts for nearly 7% of all anthropogenic C O2 emissions each year. The main objective of this study was to develop a geopolymer-based composite to be used as a substitute for OPC in concrete application to significantly lower the carbon footprint of the construction industry. A waste material produced during the coal combustion process was used as the main raw material for the geopolymer-based composite. It was mostly the nonmetallic content of the F-type fly ash produced from the combustion of bituminous coal. The authors envisioned extracting some of the valuable metal oxides from fly ash prior to using the major nonmetallic portion of the fly ash for geopolymer concrete application. The results obtained from this study showed that the compressive strength of geopolymer concrete compares favorably with that of conventional concrete prepared using OPC.

Steel consumption forms a significant part of the operating cost of a minerals processing plant. An estimated one-quarter billion kilograms of steel in the United States and over one-half billion kilograms in the world are consumed each year in wet grinding alone. The depletion of ore grades and the necessity of finer grinding of abrasive ores are expected to increase the steel consumption even higher. Through continued research and development by the mining industry and the suppliers of steel products several remedies to reduce steel consumption have evolved. This paper critically reviews the mechanisms involved in steel wear, and currently available methods, materials and operating conditions for reducing steel consumption. Particular attention is given to liner design modifications and substitution of steel liners with rubber liners.

Waste disposal underground is the most effective method when viewed from an environmental aspect. As costs of other methods of disposal continue to escalate, the cost effectiveness of underground disposal during the mining cycle becomes increasingly attractive. The use of concrete for sealing abandoned mines has proved to be suspect when associated with a relatively incompetent adjacent strata due to its shrinkage characteristics. Complete failure of the plug has been known to occur in some instances. A more effective, cost competitive seal can be obtained using pneumatically stowed material and incorporating a polyurethane grout, which has greater adhesion characteristics than concrete. Injection of the surrounding strata and of the stowed material helps to ensure an impervious barrier and prevent the plug from moving when subject to high pressure heads. When properly placed, impervious seals cause the old workings to flood, raise the mine pool level, and thus eventually eliminate the potential for oxidation, which is the primary cause of acidity in the water.

Red Dog, the world’s largest zinc mine, is located ninety miles north of the Arctic Circle in northwest Alaska on lands owned by the Inupiat Eskimo organization called NANA. NANA received a subsurface title over this resource as part of their settlement lands under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act and subsequently entered into a Lease Agreement with Cominco in 1982. Cominco, an international mining company focused on zinc, built and operated the mine. NANA’s principle objective in the development of the mine was to have it contribute to the development of sustainable communities within their traditional region. This meant creating job opportunities in a modern economy while preserving the traditional subsistence lifestyles. Preservation of their culture, language, and traditions are as important to the NANA people today as they were through ages past. The principles of sustainable development – matching economic, environmental, and social goals through continuous communications and high commitment to efficient and effective operations – have been core values for the Red Dog Mine from the beginning. This paper will describe how a large mining operation in a remote corner of the world has been able to contribute toward sustainable development in that region.

Installation of a Load Commutated Inverter (LCI) provides an economical method for conversion of a Fixed Speed Semi-Autogenous Grinding Mill into one with variable speed, qualities. Though capital intensive, the conversion appears to be one of the most cost-effective methods to gain the advantage of critical speed variations for variable ore characteristics. Expected advantages from the installation of LCI drives at the Goldstrike Mine were decreased liner wear, decreased media consumption and additional grind for increased production rates. These issues as well as construction, economics and performance will be discussed in the presentation. The utilization of the existing equipment came to play an integral part of the study and economic justification of the overall project.

The Golden Grove Project area is located 220 km (137 miles) east of Geraldton in Western Australia (Fig. 1). The project is a joint venture involving Amax Exploration (Australia) Inc. (Amax), Electrolytic Zinc Co. of Australasia Ltd. (EZ), and Esso Exploration & Production Australia Inc. (Esso), each with 31 116% interest, and Aztec Exploration Pty., Ltd. (Aztec), with a 3 1/2% carried and a 3% contributing interest. The venture covers two significant volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits and some 40 km (25 miles) of highly prospective Archean volcanics. During the course of the past 12 years (to 1983), all four companies were responsible for operating the project at one time or another and all influenced the discoveries. The Gossan Hill and Scuddles deposits are typical examples of volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits associated with Archean explosive submarine acid to intermediate volcanic complexes. They are located in the northwesterly trending Yalgoo greenstone belt of the West Australian Archean Shield. Gossan Hill, located in 1972, is essentially a copper deposit with minor zinc lenses; to date, 97 diamond holes have delineated a geological resource* estimated to contain 13 Mt (14.3 million st) of of 3.4% Cu and 13 g/t (0.38 oz per ton) Ag in the main lenses with minor lenses totaling 2 Mt (2.2 million st) of 3.7% Cu and 17 g/t (0.49 oz per ton) Ag and 1.7 Mt (1.9 million st) grading 1.5% Pb, 14% Zn, and 87 g/t (2.8 oz per ton) Ag. Scuddles is a zinc-copper deposit with gold and silver credits. It *Resource estimate provided by Esso for inclusion in Aztec Exploration Pty. Ltd. 1982 Annual Report was discovered in 1979 and, to the end of 198 1, had been delineated with 42 diamond holes. On the basis of this drilling, a geological resource* of 26 Mt (28.7 million st) has been estimated in three coalescing lenses. The lenses comprise 7.5 Mt (8.3 million st) of 2.1 % Cu, 12 g/t (0.35 oz per ton) Ag, and 0.3 g/t (0.009 oz per ton) Au; 7.6 Mt (8.4 million st) of 0.4% Cu, 9.9% Zn, 73 g/t (2.3 oz per ton) Ag, and 0.7 g/t (0.02 oz per ton) Au; and 1 1.0 Mt (1 2.1 mil lion st) of 1.1 % Cu, 9.3% Zn, 8 1 g/t (2.6 oz per ton) Ag, and 1.5 g/t (0.044 oz per ton) Au. Most mineral processes currently in use, such as flotation, spirals, gravity concentrators, etc., are only effective over a small range of sizes, hence the upstream need for technology to accurately classify fines by size. The Pansep’s design is revolutionary. Slurry is fed onto connected mesh sections that move without bending or vibration, in a circular motion. Both sides of the screen mesh are utilized, so Panseps are self-cleaning and has half the footprint of other mesh-type screens. Developed in South Africa in 1997, the Pansep has proved itself very effective as a wet fines screen to effectively classify fine mineral fractions from 50 to 2,000 micron (325 to 10 mesh).

At Ok Tedi, ore type and SAG feed size distribution vary widely and frequently. This makes control of the SAG mills by application of the power/pressure relationship difficult. Power logic has traditionally been conservative due to power spikes associated with rapid size distribution changes. A new expert system was installed in early 2000. The system incorporates multiple state fuzzy logic to deal with frequent and radical ore type and size variations, along with monitoring of motor temperatures. A short term power spike no longer warrants immediate radical action. This has resulted in increased mill throughput and improved circuit stability.

An AIME transaction by P.L. Allsman (1960), "Analysis of Explosive Action in Breaking Rock," contains many useful concepts applicable to blast design. Of special interest was the derivation of a heave blasting burden formula, which is important in establishing the maximum burden. Unfortunately, its derivation contains a fundamental error and then a compensating one. This formula was: [ ] The derivation used the impulse-momentum principle, with a 0.3 m thick (1 ft thick) radius of rock mass being acted on by an explosive impulse. However, the rock weight was not converted to mass by dividing by the gravitational constant. This mistake can be verified by checking the units in the formula, which resolve into m%-sec instead of meters. Adding the gravitational constant corrects this: [ ] If the minimum velocity is now taken as 0.3 m/sec (1 ft per sec), as was recommended, excessively large burdens result. Any appropriate rock velocity should be capable of throwing the rock mass a minimum distance so that the swell needed for breakage can occur. Unless the burden is extremely small and the bench height is very high, it is unlikely that a velocity of only 0.3 m/sec (1 ft per sec) will be sufficient. A review of the literature indicates that average rock velocities observed by camera studies typically range from 15 to 30 m/sec (50 to 100 ft per sec) (duPont deNemours and Co., 1977; Tansey, 1979). On this basis, a minimum rock velocity of about 15 m/sec (49 ft per sec) would be expected and not 0.3 m/sec (1 ft per sec). When a velocity of 15 m/sec (49 ft per sec) is inserted into the corrected formula, the results approximate those of the original formula with a velocity of 0.3 m/sec (1 ft per sec). Fluorspar was not mined in the United States during 2004, although a small amount of usable synthetic fluorspar (CaF2) was produced from industrial waste streams. The majority of fluorspar consumed in the United States came from imports or stockpiled material purchased from the National Defense Stockpile (NDS). In addition, consumption is supplemented by use of by-product fluorosilicic acid produced at phosphoric acid plants. In 2004, annual production of fluorosilicic acid was 50kt (55,000 st) or about 88 kt (97,000 st) of 92 percent fluorspar equivalent. Current design guidelines for the surface catalysed oxidation of Fe(II) on Fe(OH)3 (Ochre) in passive mine water treatment systems are based largely on empirical data as the details of rates and mechanisms have not fully been revealed. Also the effects of elevated carbonate concentrations, typical of many UK minewaters, on the surface catalysed oxidation rate are unclear. In order to move away from empirical design and towards sound engineering that is based on geochemical and hydrological understanding it is necessary to quantify these reaction rates. In this study the effects of Fe(OH)3 and carbonate on the rate of Fe(II) oxidation by dissolved oxygen have been investigated with an aim to delineate the reaction mechanism. Experiments were conducted under well-controlled conditions. Preliminary results indicate that the surface catalysed reaction is an order of magnitude faster at pH ~6.4 with 200 mg/l Fe(OH)3 than the homogeneous rate and is dominated by an elevated rate of removal and oxidation of Fe(II) from the solution phase. It is also apparent that the oxidation rate of actual adsorbed Fe(II) is substantially retarded with respect to the homogeneous rate. Carbonates were not shown to affect the surface rate within the bounds of this preliminary study.

W.H. Moyer In reference to the section “Excess pyrite, ” the author discusses difficulties in separating chalcopyrite from pyrite. A technique does exist, and has been used commercially, for the flotation, separation, and recovery, if desired, of both chalcopyrite and pyrite. The method was described in Mining Engineering, March 1966, “An Improved Flotation Method for Cornwall Sulfides. ” While it was not used on a porphyry copper ore, it was used on a chalcopyrite - pyrite-containing ore and might well have application. Both sulfides, chalcopyrite and pyrite, were floated simultaneously using xanthate as a collector and MIBC frother to produce a cleaned sulfide product. This concentrate was then thickened and conditioned at high solids with aeration and lime to a pH above 12.0 for a period of 1.5 to 2 hr. A supplemental suppressant, such as cyanide, could be used if necessary to sharpen the subsequent separation; however, it was not required at Cornwall. The conditioned sulfides were floated with two stages of cleaning to produce a highgrade chalcopyrite froth product and a pyrite sink product barren in copper. The separation at Cornwall gave a 28.6q. Cu grade chalcopyrite product and a pyrite analyzing 0.0670 Cu. A desliming step on the raw ore initially used at Cornwall for a period of time was later discontinued. Advantages to be found in using a strong sulfide collector, such as a xanthate, is the rapid flotation it induces and, generally, an ability to float at a coarser grind. A following regrind circuit could be used to give maximum liberation and produce a clean sulfide concentration. The “differential” separation is concerned primarily with grade and with assuring a barren pyrite for maximum recovery.

In this environment, the Owner’s engineer would typically provide performance requirements for the design-builder, and the Contractor’s designer would work with the contractor to design the tunnel lining based on the Contractor’s means and methods and manufacturing process. This paper will describe the typical requirements provided by the Owner based on its design objectives, and the means and methods by the Contractor that would significantly impact the design. Project examples and recommendations for Owner’s requirements will be provided that can optimize the design and still achieve the Owner’s performance objectives.

Faults, sandstone channels, and abandoned mine workings present severe safety hazards, disrupt mining, and necessitate costly precautions or discontinuance of operations. In addition to fault detection, mining companies have a need to map discontinuities such as seam thinning and previously mined areas in both longwall and room-and-pillar operations. Initial field tests demonstrated successful generation and propagation of higher order guided wave modes. Theoretical studies indicate potential for improved resolution by sensing small details in the coal seam and roof structure. Controlled-waveform source transducers and specialized detectors are particularly useful to preferentially excite and detect the Love (SH) and Rayleigh-type (P-SV) waves, including the higher frequency modes. The distinct observation of reflections using the transducers in the shear wave mode makes feasible the detection of the water-filled voids.

Traditional loading systems have relied for many years on wheel and track loaders, power shovels, conveyor belts, and more recently, hydraulic front shovels. Each has certain advantages and disadvantages, depending largely on job conditions. Hydraulic backhoes were introduced several years ago as still another truck loading option. At first, buckets were small and backhoe use was limited to small earthmoving projects. Now, as backhoes are equipped with shorter sticks and bigger buckets to move larger quantities of earth. The "mass excavation" concept offers an excellent truck loading option in many situations. System Development and Advantages Mass excavation was first used successfully by contractors in site development and highway construction, loading both on-highway and off-highway trucks. Operators were able to take advantage of the excavator's ability to work in poor underfoot conditions and dig in tough materials. The technique was first applied to mining in the kaolin mines of central Georgia. Kaolin, one of the world's most abundant minerals, is used to make paper, paint, ceramics, rubber, plastics, and many other products. Since kaolin clay is slippery when wet, load-out with wheel loaders is very inefficient. Also, kaolin is found in very spotty deposits due to the weathering process involved in its formation. Consequently, draglines are also impractical for kaolin mining since they don't have the mobility to move between clay deposits. In response to these mining conditions and kaolin characteristics, mines began using excavators in mass excavation as early as 1976. They have developed a system that takes advantage of the excavator's •high penetration and breakout force in tight materials; •fast-cycling hydraulics; •ability to work in poor underfoot conditions; and •mobility in comparison to draglines. This loading method has been successful in Georgia's kaolin mines and now can be applied to other mining operations as well. This overview presents historical and reference information on the principal gemstones and their production in certain states. The report is not a definitive work on gemstones within the select states or United states.

Mining is likely to be targeted by The United States Environmental Protection Agency (“EPA”) as one of its key enforcement targets for fiscal year 2002-2003. Identifying the mining industry as an enforcement target, coupled with an increase in enforcement activity in recent years, places each mining operation at increased risk of receiving enforcement attention. A properly developed and implemented Environmental Management System (“EMS”) tailored for your operation is invaluable in reducing the risk of incurring liability for non-compliance. At the heart of an effective EMS is an audit program that checks the company’s compliance with environmental requirements. In addition, audit privilege (in select states), voluntary self-disclosure, and the attorney-client privilege serve as very effective tools for managing those liabilities that may arise during auditing a well-developed program. Of course, these latter tools are effective only if the auditing program is properly structured and properly managed. EPA and some states also provide varying degrees of immunity for environmental violations that are voluntarily disclosed in writing by the company. However, self-disclosure laws and policies typically prescribe stringent requirements for parties seeking to take advantage of them. For example: U.S. EPA has recently extended the time period in which to provide full written self-disclosure to 21 days. However, U.S. EPA’s revised Self-Disclosure guidance also addresses when a company obtains knowledge of a violation for purposes of triggering the 21-day clock and specifically extends the knowledge requirement to include the company’s agents and consultants. This expansion increases the difficulty companies may have in clearly defining and managing when they obtained knowledge.
