This paper reviews ore pass practice in some Canadian mines in Quebec and Ontario. In particular it reviews ore pass configuration, flow control mechanisms and monitoring practice. A review of the type of problems encountered and the tools to restore flow is also presented.

Composite rock mass failures involve intact rock material as well as fracture and shear on existing defects. Experiences from open-cut coalmining in the Bowen Basin of central Queensland are that failures of this nature occur suddenly with little warning, and are much more common than classical structurally controlled failures. Geological conditions and mining practices in the Bowen Basin are described. The circumstances of a sample of composite failures are described in detail in the paper. From this experience it appears that several aspects of conventional geotechnical investigation and design practice have not contributed significantly to either predicting or controlling the risks associated with sudden failures. These practices are described as myths for reasons outlined in the paper. On the other hand, the reality seems to be that high initial stresses and stress changes caused by excavation lead by a process of extensional deformation to a critical stress condition within the rock mass, and that sudden collapse follows when that critical stress condition can no longer be sustained. It is concluded that learnings gained from underground excavations in rock may be more applicable to open pit excavations than previously thought, and that the processes of prefailure deformation require more careful study if we are to develop more reliable risk management controls.

A finite element model was generated of a Søderberg electrode in a ferromanganese smelter. In this model, the casing and fins were modelled explicitly, and temperature-dependent material properties were included. A two-stage analysis procedure was used, the first part being a coupled thermal-electrical analysis using an applied DC current. As the casing material was non-magnetic, the DC current was deemed sufficiently accurate for this initial analysis. The proximity effect was not considered. Thermal boundary conditions based on assumed temperature distributions in the furnace were applied. Calculated temperatures agreed well with measured values. The joule heat calculated in this step was applied as a load to a coupled thermalstress analysis. The model was applied to a comparative study of alternative materials for the casing and fins. A number of different combinations of materials for the casing and fins were evaluated in a comparative study. The position of the baking zone was used as the criterion for evaluating the potential of each material combination. Based on this analysis, some material combinations were discarded as being entirely unsuitable, whilst the two most suitable combinations will be tested experimentally in the furnace. The stress analysis was performed on the most suitable option. The practical advantage of this analysis was that a number of what-if scenarios could be evaluated and discarded prior to embarking on expensive experimental work, thus limiting the amount of experimental effort required. A mathematical model allows for the comparison of options under controlled conditions, where parameters of interest can be varied individually, with all other parameters remaining the same, a condition which is difficult to achieve in an operating furnace.

LHD (load haul dumper) is now used as a loading machine for intermediate mechanization in underground coal mining. For survival in the intense competition in the global business environment in recent years it is essential that LHD machine should be reliable and maintained effectively and efficiently. This paper seeks to study the reliability, availability and maintainability (RAM)of an LHD machine with failure and repair data by Markov modelling. The constraints and reasons for machine unavailability are outlined. The reliability and maintainability of an LHD and its subsystems are evaluated. Possible modification or design alternatives are highlighted. Reliability and maintainability of an LHD system are disappointing. As new legislation drives to lower SO2 emissions from metallurgical plants, plant managers face the challenge of keeping their costs under control. The Cansolv® SO2 Scrubbing System has been broadly adopted in the non-ferrous industry as a cost effective solution for smelter operators to meet the new SO2 emissions targets. The Cansolv® SO2 Scrubbing System is an amine-based regenerable process that selectively absorbs SO2 from a variety of gases, including dilute smelter gases, such as furnace and converter gases. The system produces a pure, water-saturated SO2 byproduct stream, which can then be directed to the front end of a sulfuric acid plant for conversion to sulfuric acid. When deployed in a smelter complex, the Cansolv® SO2 Scrubbing System may also be used to process acid plant tail gas, allowing single absorption sulfuric acid plants to achieve emissions an order of magnitude lower than that of a double absorption acid plant with a lower capital investment. Depending on inlet gas temperature SO2 emissions in the treated gas can be controlled to as low as 55 mg/Nm3. This paper will describe some of the applications where customers have or are planning to use the Cansolv® SO2 Scrubbing System and what as well as which features and cost advantages for the treatment of smelter gases were key to the technology choice.

Worldwide TiO2is extracted from natural ilmenite, rutile, and anatase minerals via the sulphateand chloride processes. The sulphate process generates large volumes of less toxic wastes, whereas the chloride process, including the ilmenite-chloride process of DuPont, yields much lower volume of wastes, which are highly toxic and hazardous. The treatment and disposal of such hazardous chloride wastes is both expensive and difficult in terms of long-term monitoring. Besides the waste management and disposal, there is also a shortage of high-grade titanium dioxide minerals in nature, which consequently yields much larger tonnages of sulphate and chloride wastes. In the present investigation we report the results of an alternative titaniferous mineral beneficiation process based on soda ash roasting of minerals. Compared to the conventional processes for beneficiation of TiO2- ores, the alkali roasting of titaniferous offers several advantages including the zero process wastes. In the soda ash roasting process, the mineral is mixed with sodium carbonate and heated above 1023 K in air. The oxidative roasting of ores yields several complex alkali compounds, some of which produce a liquid mixture above 1123 K. In this paper, we have attempted to characterize the composition and physical chemistry of alkali-rich liquid phase. The phase equilibria in the Ti-(M:Fe)-Na-O system are evaluated and compared with the phases formed as a result of roasting reaction. The experimental results revealed that the composition of complex alkali liquid at the reaction interface plays an important role in determining the transport of O2-ions and decomposition of ilmenite. The roles of the crystal structure of mineral phases and their energetics are also emphasized in controlling their decomposition during alkali roasting. The presence of molten alkali in controlling the partitioning of water-soluble alkali salts and insoluble sodium titanate is also explained. In surface mining operations, ultra-heavy trucks operate on haul road networks which are typically from 10?40 km in length. These road networks are often not optimally designed and maintained and as a result, identifying and remediating road functional defects is problematic. Most surface mine operators agree good roads are desirable, but find it difficult to translate this into an effective road maintenance system. This paper presents a haul road maintenance management system which utilizes an assessment of rolling resistance based on a functional performance evaluation of a haul road, together with mine haul truck operating cost models to derive the optimal frequency of road maintenance. A typical application is presented which illustrates the potential of the technique to manage maintenance as and where needed with resultant reduction in total road user costs and an improvement in service provided for the road user. Black Mountain, a polymetallic base metal mine located in the Northern Cape territory of South Africa has been blessed with high grade economic ore for many years. Now that the Broken Hill orebody is nearing the end of its life, a lower grade orebody (Swartberg) is being exploited to supplement production from Broken Hill. In addition, ore from stopes in the upper levels of the Broken Hill orebody is considerably tarnished (oxidized). As a natural result, the remaining ore contains a higher percentage of magnetite, pyrrhotite and pyrite than in earlier years. Bismuth, cadmium and cobalt also occur in the ore in higher quantities. The life of the mine has been lengthened with the discovery of further deeper-lying ore reserves extending from the Broken Hill orebody suitably called the Deeps section. However, to bridge the gap between development of the new reserve and the exhaustion of the old reserve, these lower grade and tarnished (oxidized) ores have to be treated. The mine has had reasonable success in identifying unfavourable or problematic ore types and stockpiling them separately to blend in small quantities with more favourable ore. Bench and plant scale tests have aided identification of the various ore types and significant improvements in flotation metallurgical results have been seen. Copper, lead and zinc metal occur as sulphides in the ore. The mill consists of a differential and sequential flotation process that extracts copper concentrate, lead concentrate and zinc concentrate respectively with silver metal recovered in the copper and lead concentrates. This paper describes the ore blending strategy employed at the mine to maximize the econo-metallurgical efficiency of the operation.

The thermodynamic activity of MnO was measured in MnO-CaO-MgO-SiO2 slags that are typically encountered in the production of manganese-containing stainless steels. A gas equilibration-quenching technique was employed in measuring the activities. Activities of Mn in Pt-Mn alloys were redetermined at 1600ºC, which reconfirmed earlier results of strong negative deviations. MnO activities were then measured by equilibrating slags of various compositions based on a statistical experimental design procedure with Pt-Mn alloys under controlled partial pressure of oxygen in MnO saturated platinum crucibles at 1600ºC. Activities of MnO were found to increase with increasing concentration of MnO, basicity and CaO to MgO ratio. Two multi-coefficient regression models were developed to predict the activities and activity coefficients of MnO in slags at 1600ºC. Keywords: activity, MnO, slag

Despite the dramatic initial growth and success of their Ikhwezi Colliery near Delmas, Mpumalanga, Kuyasa?s experiences offer some sobering arguments for significant changes to mineral rights ownership, the attitude of financial institutions and government policy if South Africa is to have a dynamic and successful junior and small-scale mining sector.

Computer Integrated Mining (CIMG) is a process of using computer networks to transform islands of enabling technologies into a highly interconnected mining system. CIMG involves the integration of advanced technologies at various levels in the mine business to achieve higher flexibility, better quality of processes and control, and improved profitability. Justifying the benefits of CIMG are difficult as many of the advantages are derived from improved flexibility, quality, and control. Justification is based on the evaluation of the benefits to be gained, compared to the required capital investment. Management tools used in mining are currently inadequate in assessing the value of advanced technology whose benefits are primarily qualitative. A key aspect of successful implementation is management acceptance, which has to be won through the capability to justify the technology?s financial costs and the true value of all of its benefits. The manufacturing industry faced similar justification difficulties when adopting advanced technology in factories. A significant amount of funding and research was invested in developing management strategies and approaches to justification. Many of the problems that faced the transformation of the manufacturing industry in the late Eighties and early Nineties are now facing mining. The solutions derived for manufacturing may help mining in its transition to an increased reliance on integration technology. Reviewing the industrial history of computer integrated manufacturing identifies several tools and strategic frameworks that can be adapted for mining. A single aggregate mix design was developed based on a slag/Portland binder blend and crusher sand. The primary design criterion, after performance, was the fluidity of the shotcrete and concrete product to ensure compatibility with existing manufacturing and shotcrete equipment as well as the pipeline transport system Cullinan Diamond Mine was investigating. Initial work had determined an optimum slag/Portland to aggregate ratio while retaining a water to slag/Portland binder ratio of approximately 0.4 to maintain the flowability of the product. A super-plasticizer was used to further increase the flowability of the product as opposed to increasing the water content. Finally a polypropylene reinforcement fibre was included in the wet shotcrete product to improve the energy absorption characteristics of the shotcrete. Previous work on the strength development of the slag/Portland based shotcretes and concretes suggests that strength class based on the EN 206 specification is C40/50 while the toughness classification based on the EFNARC plate test is c, or greater than 1000 joules1. Typically, Cullinan Diamond Mine wanted a shotcrete with a uniaxial compressive cube strength of 45 MPa and an energy absorption, based on the EFNARC plate test, in excess of 700 joules. This is an EN 206 strength class of C36/45 requiring a uniaxial compressive core strength of 30.5 MPa and a toughness classification of b1. In addition to the shotcrete development, Cullinan Diamond Mine required concrete products with a compressive strength range of between 25 and 60 Mpa for differing construction operations underground to be manufactured from the same mix design and raw materials as for the shotcrete. Finally, Cullinan Diamond Mine carries out extensive dry shotcrete operations and an investigation into the possibility of using the single aggregate mix design for dry shotcreting was also entered into. This paper presents data that indicates that, under the terms of reference, a wet and dry shotcrete and concrete product appears to be possible from a single aggregate less than 6.7 mm in size, and that a slag/Portland binder is suitable for use as the hydraulic binder in all the products, and that the necessary performance parameters of strength and energy absorption can be achieved.

The final removal of inclusions in the ladle, tundish, and mold in a continuous casting process involves the kinetic steps of liquid film drainage, interface rupture, and absorption of the inclusion into the overlaying molten slag. During this process, oxide inclusions can undergo chemical reactions with the slag. This paper presents recent results on imaging the slag/steel interface and elucidates the evolution of Al2O3and Al2O3-CaO inclusions during their separation from the steel and on their incorporation into the slag. Experimental results, obtained through a Confocal Scanning Laser Microscope, are compared with thermodynamic predictions.

Born in Bothaville (OFS) on the 26th August 1919, Daniel G. Krige grew up in Krugersdorp on the West Rand. Hematriculated from Monument High School in Krugersdorpin 1934 at the age of 15 and graduated with a B.Sc. (Eng.)degree in mining engineering from the University of the Witwatersrand at the end of 1938 (age 19). In 1938 he joined Anglo Transvaal where he worked on a number of gold mines until 1943, gaining a wide range of valuable practical experience in surveying, sampling and ore valuation. He then joined the Government Mining Engineer’s Department where he worked for 8 years during which time he participated in the uranium negotiations with the British and American authorities and designed the uranium pricing formula for the contracts which led to the establishment of South Africa's profitable uranium industry in the early 1950s. During the same period he began his pioneering work in the application of mathematical statistics to the valuation of new gold mines using a limited number of boreholes and of ore reserves for existing mines. His early papers in the application of mathematical statistics, some republished in French, created world-wide interest that led to the development of the science and concepts that surround the spatial evaluation of mineral resources and reserves known as geostatistics. This technique has contributed to improved ore evaluation techniques as well as the reduction of the financial risks associated with investment in mining enterprises. Furthermore, it led to the recognition of his contributions to the evaluations of mineral deposits through the coining of the term ‘kriging’ that is used to describe a spatial mineral evaluation process known and practised in international mining circles. He continued his work in geostatistics throughout his career as Group Financial Engineer of the Anglovaal Group until his retirement in1981 and afterwards for ten years as Professor of Mineral Economics at the Witwatersrand University. He is still active as a consultant and is a registered Professional Engineer. He has published some 90 technical papers both locally and overseas, some in Russia, and has lectured and participated in international congresses in many countries. His contributions were recognized by the Witwatersrand University through the award of the D.Sc. (Eng.) degree in1963, by three honorary degrees (from the universities of Pretoria, UNISA and Moscow State Mining University), by many awards from the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, the International Association for Mathematical Geology, Die Suid Afrikaanse Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns, the SME of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, the International APCOM Council in1999, the University of Antofagasta in Chile, and by the South African President (Order for Meritorious Service, Class 1, Gold). He has served on various Government committees, notably that for State Aid for gold mines (1967/8) and designed the State Aid formula which enabled many mines to survive a period of low gold prices; also various taxation committees, and the mining mission to Iran in 1974. He is a fellow and/or honorary life member of various technical societies locally and overseas, including the Royal Society of South Africa. During the period in the Government service he also handled several of the post-war lease applications in the Free State and Klerksdorp goldfields. The fact that decisions on new gold mines of critical importance to the State and the economy as a whole, were being taken on a limited number of drillholes without any scientific analysis of the risks of failure, stimulated him to start basic research into ore evaluation. His approach was based on the application of Mathematical Statistics to these problems, an approach of which very little was known world-wide at that stage but which had already been initiated in South Africa by Sichel via the lognormal frequency distribution model. In Krige's 1951 paper published in the Journal of the Chemical, Metallurgical and Mining Society of South Africa he covered the statistical explanation of the conditional biases in ore block valuations and stimulated the use by several gold mines of regression corrections for routine ore reserve valuations, a technique which, in effect, was the first use on an elementary basis of what is now known as kriging. His 1952 paper introduced, inter alia the basic geostatistical concepts of ‘support’, ‘spatial structure’,’ selective mining units’ and ‘grade-tonnage curves’. His 1951 paper was based on his M.Sc. (Eng.) thesis submitted in the Department of Mining Engineering to the University of the Witwatersrand, and expounded his pioneering work in geostatistics in more detail. His early research papers that had stimulated interest in several mining circles overseas, were republished in French in1955, resulting in a major research effort by French mining engineers in this field. This, in turn, led to the establishment of the now world-renowned French school of ore evaluation in Fontainebleau, Le Centre de Geostatistique de l’École des Mines de Paris. Underground excavations exhibit different hangingwall conditions in response to varying geotechnical and mining situations. These differences need to be quantified so as to accurately determine the effectiveness of the mining and/or support strategies. A useful tool for the quantification of these differences is hangingwall profiling. Two methods of hangingwall profile measurement are described?termed irregular and periodic methods. Several data analysis techniques are reviewed for these methods and the suitable ones are discussed in detail. For irregular data the suitable techniques are the determination of the length, the average of the profile and the average absolute deviation from the mean of the profile. All of these techniques as well as determination of the moving average of the height and examination of the spectral image of the profile can be successfully applied to regular data. The effect of preconditioning on the hangingwall is discussed as an example and it is quantitatively shown that it results in improvements of conditions. The techniques described allow the engineer to quantitatively identify the appropriate support type or mining strategy and thus represent a valuable decision-making tool. It is suggested that these techniques should be employed on a routine basis by the rock engineers on the mines as part of their geotechnical classification, as well as support manufacturers to quantify the effectiveness of various support types.

Sustainable development is currently an extremely relevant concept worldwide, especially in developing countries like South Africa. Mining and metals companies are also directly affected by the sustainable development agenda. The Mining Charter?s requirements as well as new legislation (Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act) expect, among others, for mines to support infrastructure and poverty eradication projects in the communities surrounding the mines. The aim of this paper is to, against the background of a qualitative study of mining communities in the North-West Province of South Africa, put forward some critical factors for the sustainability of social development projects in the mining sector.

The chromium oxide in stainless steel slags usually exists as Cr2O3. However, there is a possibility that it is oxidized to hazardous CrO3 after disposal or during use. Therefore, some technical developments to reduce chromium oxide by using a smelting reduction technique have been reported recently. This paper describes the fundamentals of the technique which have been applied to ferrochromium production and reviews the recent results in literature.

The mining industry worldwide is currently facing a significant restructuring process. In most underground mines, widespread mechanization of the mining processes increases production while reducing staff numbers. At the same time, mining depths as well as the lateral spread of the mine workings are increasing. This ever-changing mining environment requires sophisticated solutions for the design and operation of underground mines. In fact, a reduced number of mining engineers is taking responsibility for everincreasing mine operations. This applies not only to the excavation of the minerals, but also to all other aspects of the mining operation, including health and safety, disaster management, and mine rescue organization. Most mining engineering graduates entering the industry lack experience in mine emergency management. Young engineer trainees must learn mine emergency management and rescue work in addition to their normal training experience on the job. Often, and unfortunately, emergency and rescue training at different mining companies is not carried out to the highest level and standard and with the best possible training outcomes. The tasks and challenges a young engineer faces while being trained in a new position do not leave much room for additional training in mine rescue and emergency management. At the same time, experienced, ?old hands? are retiring and cannot easily be replaced due to limited graduation numbers. Strategies are being developed at mining universities worldwide to train mining engineering students in handling mine emergency situations and to provide hands-on experience for managing potential accident and disaster scenarios underground. Two of these strategies, from the USA and from Central Europe, are presented in this paper. These specific strategies have to be seen under special consideration of the local and regional boundary conditions, but might serve as case studies for mining schools and universities in other countries.

Coal has been at the forefront of mankind?s drive to improve his quality of life and also for sustainable development, from the Industrial Revolution onwards. The international coal industry today is large, with some 3,7 billion tons being produced and consumed in 1997. South Africa is an important participant in the coal industry, selling some 220 million tons in 1997 of which 64 million tons were exported. It is the second-largest thermal coal exporting country in the world. Despite the size of the world coal industry, it is not immune to change. The address examines growth projections for the industry and the change drivers that will impact on it in the future. Environmental pressures, the most important of which being the climate change debate, the Kyoto Protocol arising from this debate and the development of clean coal technologies, to reduce the impact of coal production and usage on the environment are considered. Other major change drivers considered are competition from other sources of energy and that between coal producers, the deregulation of the electric power industry, corporate restructuring and for the South African producer, legislative reform. The declining (real term) coal price, the consequent squeeze on margins and the need for producers to actively contain costs is covered. Technology has, in the past, been the driver behind the growth and change of the South African coal industry and its future role in ensuring that coal is the fuel of choice for continued improvement in standards of living and economic development is addressed.
