Tunnel Construction 90. London, Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, 1990. Reviewer: J.A. Cruise This is the published volume of papers presented at the Tunnel Construction 90 Conference, which was held in London in April 1990 under the auspices of The Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy collaboration with the Chamber of Mines of South Africa, arranged a colloquium to inform mine management of the current state of knowledge on the rockburst hazard associated with geological structures. The Colloquium was held at Mintek on 4th June, 1986, and attracted approximately 240 delegates.

The paper covers a wide range of modifications that are of potential interest to the practical coal-preparation engineer. Unfortunately, the paucity of performance data does not permit one to draw conclusions. The authors do not appear to have a clear understanding of the Tramp (or partition) curve concept.

Underground rock boring was the topic of the mining vacation school held at the University of the Witwatersrand in the week 4th to 8th February, 1980. The School, which dealt with the management and economics of the subject, attracted 75 delegates from all sectors of the South African mining industry, in addition to two delegates from Germany and one from Zambia.

Dr J. P. Hugo (President) was in the Chair. The colloquium was attended by 170 delegates, and was opened by the President at 9.15 a.m.

The Johannesburg Branch of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy was officially inaugurated at a General Meeting held in Kelvin House on Monday, 18th January, 1988. In addition to nominating committee members, Mr G. T.G. Emere delivered a presentation on the Barbrook gold-mining project, which is currently in the development phase some 40 km east of Barberton.

A model for the leaching of non-porous particles by B. K. LOVEDAY*, Ph.D. (Fellow) A model has been developed for the prediction of the rate of leaching for an assemblage of non-porous particles in terms of size-distribution parameters. Expressions are developed for batch and continuous operation, and an example of the application of the model is given.

The 'doorstopper' technique for determining the state of stress in rock requires that the stress concentration factors at the flat end of a borehole be known. Published values of these factors are widely variant. An axisymmetric finite element analysis of this problem has been made, yielding elastic stress concentration factors for different values of Poisson's ratio.

The application of oxygen in a copper smelter by N. GIBSON* (Visitor) This paper describes how the problem of increasing the capacity of the Rokana copper smelter was handled, and how oxygen was found to be technically and economically the best solution. The first phase of its implementation is outlined.

The development of a continuous recording scintillation counter mounted on a cyclometer by P. D. Toens (Fellow) and D. Visser (Visitor) In order to facilitate ground radiometric surveys the Atomic Energy Board has developed a continuous recording device attached to a scintillation counter which is mounted on a cyclometer. Details concerning the construction are given.

This paper reviews the metallurgical functions of vanadium in high-strength Iow-alloy steels, and discusses the ways in which vanadium is used in various types of steel supplied as reinforcing bars, plates, sections, and strip. Potential developments to meet new engineering requirements are discussed briefly.

The itinerary included visits to the Grootegeluk colliery, the Matimba power-generation utility, and the Thabazimbi iron-ore mine.

This paper describes the design, installation and operation of an endless rope haulage system recently built for and commissioned at Evander Gold Mines in Mpumalanga, South Africa. The factors which lead to the choice of such a system and the advantages gained over more commonly used winding systems are outlined.

Cecil John Irving was born on 13th March, 1902. He was educated at King Edward's School in Birmingham, and at the University of Birmingham, where he graduated in B.Sc. Mining Metallurgy in 1922, and in B.Sc. Metal Mining on 7th July, 1923. Johannesburg 1986 The biggest mining exhibition ever held in Africa and several allied international conferences are to be staged in Johannesburg in September of next year.
