The term geostatistics was introduced by Matheron (1960) to cover the development and application of mathematical and statistical models which take specific account of the spatial structure of a 'regionalised' variable. In ore valuation the relative positions of available ore values within an ore body or portion thereof, can only be ignored in the unlikely case where there is no significant pattern of association or correlation between them - that is, if they do not disclose any significant spatial structure. A structure might not be evident in the available data, e.g. where the spacing of the available values is relatively wide such as in surface drilling on a new deep gold mine. However, practical selective mining considerations could dictate the need for eventual underground valuation on a scale much smaller than that represented by this spacing and the possibility of a significant structure on such a smaller scale cannot then be ignored. Some spatial structure must be present wherever the average variability among the values of check ore samples from the same, adjacent or nearby grooves or of borehole cores from the deflections in the same borehole, is lower than the overall variability for ore values within the whole ore body. Another practical check on the presence of a spatial structure is where it is evident that there is or will be a significant variation in the ore grades for individual ore blocks. Any correlation between peripheral and follow-up internal ore block values also provides evidence of a spatial structure, and hence the regression techniques covered in §1.16-1.2 1 can be accepted as the first application of the geostatistical procedures. The spatial structure of a regionalised variable can be studied and measured by the pattern, usually a decreasing function, in the level of correlation or of the covariance between pairs of values as the distance or lag between the values increases, that is, by the correlogram or covariogram (Krige, 1968, 1969, 1976; and Fig. 18). In geostatistics, for various practical and theoretical reasons (Matheron, 1960, 1971), the measure most commonly used is the semivario- gram, which increases as the lag increases. The semivariogram and covariance values are interrelated and for the lognormal- de Wijsian pattern used extensively for gold ore valuation both measures as well as their relationship can be defined on a fairly straightforward basis. Provided the underlying as- sumptions are realistic, the choice of measure - correlogram, covariogram or semivariogram - will be dictated mainly by convenience. Paragraph 2.2 will cover some general geostatistical terms and $2.3-2.12 will deal mainly with the theoretical side of the lognormal-de Wijsian model for spatial structures. Wherever the relevant variable lends itself to normalisation via the 3-parameter lognormal distribution (see 51.9) the de Wijsian semivariogram model is also likely to be suitable and will provide substantial advantages in application. Various practical applications will be covered in Section 3. Although confined to the lognormal-de Wijsian model, much of the theory covered and the general approach is applicable to all spatial structures. [ ]

"In selecting a suitable method to sink a vertical shaft for underground access, a number of constraints influence the ultimate decision of where and how to develop the shaft, not least among these being safety, development and construction time, and cost. Two additional considerations stand out: these being geotechnical conditions and technology, the latter taking into account existing underground access. Assuming a project for which an existing underground excavation is available, it is tempting to build a shaft sinking project from the outset based on the raiseboring method, which has the potential to be the safest, fastest, and least expensive method provided that geotechnical conditions permit.And therein lies the rub: regardless of project time or cost constraints, when it comes to raiseboring a long (say, greater than 500 m), large diameter (greater than 4.5 m) shaft, the rock mass conditions ultimately dictate what method of shaft sinking will be feasible. Over the course of several studies for a particular project, several geotechnical analyses were carried out specifically for the purpose of developing a shaft by raiseboring. Risk analysis and experience showed that where the rock mass conditions indicated an unacceptably high risk potential, an alternative method needed to be considered, even if this meant increasing both the time and financial requirements.In this paper we present an overview of geotechnical investigation practices for shaft sinking. Decisionmaking thresholds for raiseboring or other methods of shaft sinking are discussed, including probabilities of failure, empirical rock mass classification, basic wedge failure, and back-analysis of a failed case. The design of appropriate support, and analysis of relative safety benefits for various shaft sinking methods, falls outside the scope of this work, and will be presented in a separate paper.IntroductionThe potential for rock mass failure during shaft development and construction affects whether a project is completed safely, on time and on budget. During the course of several studies to establish ventilation shafts for an underground expansion project, geotechnical analyses of rock mass stability and failure potential were carried out. Diamonds are mined from ancient raised beach deposits in southern Namibia where complex geological controls have resulted in patchy diamond distribution, largely related to irregularities (trapsites) in the bedrock. The distribution of the number of diamonds per sample is a discrete, reverse- J shape distribution which can be characterized by two parameters. These parameters have been transformed into a Beta and Theta Contribution which can be interpreted as reflecting the 'quantity' and 'quality' of the trapsites. The relationship of statistical parameters, obtained during the sampling of an ore deposit, to the geology of the deposit is an important element of ore reserve estimation. The large-scale regional trends in the contributions have been explained in terms of the geology.

Some numerical methods for the application of the model, concerning numerical solution of the equations and parameter estimation, are indicated. Some applications of the model to improve screening operations, sizing of screen, simulation of screening and of integrated plant operations are discussed, and the computer software to be used for these purposes is described in detail.

Ausmelt Top Submerged Lancing (TSL) Technology has gained widespread commercial acceptance in the lead and zinc industries, as an efficient and highly flexible pyrometallurgical reactor with accompanying excellent environmental performance. For the processing of lead and zinc bearing feed materials twenty one (21) Ausmelt furnaces are now in operation, under design or under construction. With recent increases in the value of both lead and zinc and an ever increasing focus on the sustainable use of resources, interest in the processing of secondary feed material sources as well as metal containing residues has substantially increased. Ausmelt Technology has proven to be well suited to the economic recovery of values from such sources. This has for example culminated in Ausmelt?s commitment to the Whyalla Zinc project as the owner/operator of a facility for the treatment of zinc bearing secondary feeds. This paper describes Ausmelt?s recent developments in the fields of lead and zinc processing, as well as further investigations into new processing areas, including the direct smelting of zinc concentrates. Ausmelt?s TSL Technology can now be regarded as Best Available Technology (BAT) for metal production.

This paper presents the results of a study of the mechanics of methane gas flow in coal. Desorption tests carried out on cylindrical coal specimens showed that an analytical formulation can be made to model the process of gas flow in coal based on an integration of Darcy's law, Fick's law and Langmuir's relation. The diffusivity term in the flow equation varies directly with local gas content. Permeability tests carried out on the same coal result in permeability constants with values higher than equivalent permeabilities obtained from desorption tests by many orders of magnitude. The study also revealed that permeability is highly dependent on the applied gas pressure and the rock stress.

The uranium production forecasting program described in this paper projects production from Reasonably Assured, Estimated Additional and Speculative Resources in the cost categories of less than $130/kg U. Originally designed to handle South African production, it has been expanded and redimensioned using available published information to forecast production for countries of the Western World. The program forecasts production from up to 400 plants over a period of fifty years and has built-in production models derived from documented historical data of the more important uranium provinces. It is particularly suitable to assess production cavabilities on a national and global scale where variations in outputs for the individual plants tend to even out. The program is aimed at putting the uranium potential of any one country into a realistic perspective, and it could thus be useful for planning purposes and marketing strategies.

The gas turbine industry is faced with a challenge to improve the performance of engines, while simultaneously adhering to stringent environmental legislation. One way of addressing the problem is by further increasing the recipient working temperatures. Unfortunately, the use of nickel based superalloys (NBSAs) in the gas turbine industry has reached its limitations. Although coatings can be used for small increases, and air cooling is also incorporated by design, attention is towards developing stronger metallurgical materials having higher melting points, with acceptable creep and corrosion resistance. A series of ternary and quaternary Platinum-based superalloys were developed. Platinum was selected because of its higher melting points compared to nickel, similar fcc structure and better corrosion properties. Mechanical characterisation studies of Platinum-based superalloys alloys, which included oxidation, creep and hardness, demonstrated reasonable results, outperforming an oxide dispersed strengthening (ODS) Fe-based superalloy (PM2000) and a nickel based superalloy (MAR-M200). During any materials development where high temperatures are concerned, high strength is the primary property of interest. However, during the development of gas turbines, component life and reliability, which are influenced by temperature, need to be taken into consideration, and therefore creep as well as corrosion (both temperature dependant properties), are important. These properties become significant with increasing temperatures. With increasing demand for higher temperatures, it is becoming increasingly important to include hot corrosion properties of the alloy during the material selection process. A short description on hot corrosion and its degradation mechanisms are given in this paper. Coatings are currently dominating as the best practical solution to address temperature increases. This paper looks at benefits and shortcomings of coatings over Pt-based superalloys as candidates for applications under extreme conditions. Computer programs which rely on the assumption of linear, elastic rockmass behaviour have been used routinely for many years in the South African mining industry to determine the stresses arising in the vicinity of mining excavations. A description is given of the theoretical background and novel solution techniques used in the recently developed MINSIM-D boundary element program. Features of the program include the ability to analyse multiple interacting reef planes at arbitrary orientation to one another, slippage on fault planes and the effects of backfill placement in mined areas. Incremental mining sequences can be modelled, and digitizer and front-end routines have been written to assist in the capture of mining outlines and general problem specifications. A brief indication is given of design problems for which MINSIM-D is appropriate, as well as some future extensions of the system.

Global trends stipulate the need to optimize existing assets while reducing environmental impacts. This paper illustrates the procedure that was followed to achieve such goals at one of the coal burning flash dryer units at an Anglo American smelter. An in-depth study of the process and related literature led to the development and installation of a revised control philosophy. This system includes modifications to the existing regulatory control structure as well as a hybrid rule-based and model-predictive advanced process control (APC) layer. Since commissioning of the APC, this flash dryer?s average throughput has increased by more than 6%, despite higher feed moistures. Furthermore, even though coal consumption has increased slightly, operating efficiency has improved by close to 5%. This was made possible by improving stability of the drying column outlet temperature by approximately 40%, which in turn enabled selection of a more optimal setpoint. Recent data has shown that APC utilization now exceeds 95%. This is indicative of a successful controller installation with good site acceptance. The same philosophy has therefore since been rolled out to most of the other flash dryers in the group.

This paper discusses the mine planning process for Letseng diamond mine in the Kingdom of Lesotho, in conjunction with the various software packages used during the process. The major pillars of the long-term mine planning process at Letseng are pit optimization followed by pit design and scheduling. Letseng uses Gemcom Whittle and GEMS for pit optimization and design and Runge XPAC for scheduling. The output of the mine planning process results in the generation of published mineral reserves and provides input into the Letseng overall business plan. The minerals industry is committed to the principles of sustain-ability. Reducing water consumption is a priority area, especially for regions of water scarcity. This paper presents a systemic optimization of the water balance of the Skorpion Zinc refinery with the aim of reducing water consumption. An Aspen Plus simulation of the process is used. The validity of the simulation is tested by measuring key output variables and comparing results to plant data. A number of water minimization scenarios are investigated, Including unit operation and circuit configuration changes. The scenarios leading to the largest reduction in water consumption are through the full recycle of treated effluent water, which results in water savings of up to 19%. Reducing process water and/or recycling of untreated water is prohibited by the build-up of trace elements, which affect product purity. The Skorpion process already features a highly optimized water balance, with unit operational changes merely resulting in a shift in the water balance. Consequently, the largest area for improvement is through the re-use of effluent water. Keywords Skorpion zinc water usage, process optimization, sustainability.

Cyanide is a key contributor to the efficiency of gold extraction. Public perceptions of cyanide are emotive and following some publicised incidents involving cyanide, the gold mining industry established a voluntary cyanide code for the manufacture, transport and use of cyanide in the production of gold. The paper describes the development of the code, its content and the third party auditing of the code as a means of establishing and maintaining benchmark standards. In adhering to the cyanide code requirements, there are overlaps with other management systems such as ISO 14001 and OHASA 18001 and the paper seeks to show how existing mine systems can readily accommodate cyanide code compliance and that operating and auditing the cyanide code can assist in the integration of mine heath, safety and environmental management systems.

Overexposure to noise remains a widespread, serious health hazard in the US mining and other industries despite 25 years of regulation. Most categories of illnesses and injuries associated with mining have improved, with the exception of hearing loss. The drilling of rock in a confined work environment contributes to high levels of noise exposure in mining. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting research to reduce the noise exposures of jackleg drill operators and to prevent additional cases of noise induced hearing loss (NIHL) by developing and evaluating low-cost retrofit noise controls for equipment. This report describes the procedure for the measurement and reporting of noise from portable pneumatic tools such as jackleg drills. The technique used in this research allows for the determination of the source A-weighted sound power levels and the radiation patterns in octave and 1/3 octave bands. Overall sound power level is also determined. This paper also reports the results obtained by using this procedure to evaluate a SECO S215 standard production drill and a CSIR Miningtek prototype rock drill incorporating engineering noise control measures. It was found that by using the manufacture?s recommended operating pressure of 496 kPa (72 psi) that the CSIR prototype?s sound power was 10 dB(A) less then that of the SECO S215.

"This work presents the potential for improving the flotation recovery of slow-floating sulphide minerals with the use of starvation dosages of a normal dodecyl (n-C12) trithiocarbonate (TTC) co-collector, together with a sodium isobutyl xanthate (SiBX) and dithiophosphate (DTP) collector mixture.At potentials below –150 mV (SHE), addition of nC12-TTC with SiBX improves the hydrophobicity of pyrrhotite, yielding captive bubble contact angles greater than those measured for SiBX or nC12-TTC alone, suggesting a low potential synergistic effect. This synergistic effect is further studied using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, the results indicating an increase in the surface concentration of the collector species when in a mixture. Thus, nC12-TTC with SiBX may act as an immobile surface anchor to which SiBX/SiBX2 molecules bond, increasing the localized concentration of collector species.Bench-scale flotation tests using mixtures of SiBX/DTP/nC12-TTC on a platinum group element (PGE)-bearing ore from the Bushveld Complex in South Africa confirm an improved metallurgical performance at very low substitutions (approx. 5 molar per cent) of SiBX. The improved recoveries for PGE, Cu, and Ni are correlated with improvements in the flotation kinetics of their slow-floating components. IntroductionShort-chain (less than C6) xanthates are very effective for the bulk flotation of sulphides (Fuerstenau, 1982), and early work (Leja, 1968; Gaudin, 1957; Plaksin and Bessonov, 1957; Taggart, Giudice, and Ziehl, 1934) indicated that the presence of oxygen in flotation slurries is necessary for the oxidation of the xanthate collector at the sulphide mineral surface to induce hydrophobicity. Fundamental research into the chemistry and adsorption mechanisms of xanthates over the years (Finkelstein and Poling, 1977; Woods, 1976; Winter and Woods, 1973) has revealed that for iron-bearing sulphide minerals, adsorption occurs predominantly through a charge transfer process. Oxidation of the adsorbed collector to the corresponding dimer takes place if the mixed potential of the system is greater than the reversible potential for dimer formation. In oxygenated slurries the rate of adsorption and oxidation of the collector depends greatly on the substrate surfaces. For chalcopyrite (Guler et al., 2005; Leppinen, 1990; Roos, Celis, and Sudrassono, 1990) and pentlandite (Hodgson and Agar, 1989) a two-step interaction with xanthate is proposed in which the chemisorbed xanthate is further oxidized to the dimer. The initial interaction of xanthate with pyrrhotite is through physisorption where xanthate physisorbs onto positive surface sites followed by oxidation to dixanthogen (Khan and Kellebek, 2004; Bozkurt, Xu, and Finch., 1998). This process is, however, slow and increased reaction time is needed to improve flotation recovery (Buswell and Nicol, 2002)."

Gold Fields is the world?s fourth largest gold producer with operations in South Africa, Australia, Ghana and South America. All of Gold Fields? South African Operations are located in the Witwatersrand Basin and are intermediate to deep level underground mines exploiting gold bearing, shallow dipping tabular orebodies, which have collectively produced over 50 kt (1,608 Moz) of gold over a period of more than 100 years. Although the use of Monte Carlo as a business tool was introduced in 1964, it has only been in the last 30 years that it has gained increasing acceptance within the mining industry. However, the application thereof has been mostly limited to determination of risk in project areas. This paper however, considers the possibility of using Monte Carlo simulations to asses the underlying ?Root Cause? criteria critical to the operations management of existing mining operations. Currently, working operations have a distinct advantage over project areas as they have a wealth of historical information at hand. This, in turn, can be utilized to model distributions and relationships that can be used in Monte Carlo simulations, the results of which can be analysed to determine areas of concern. Projects can then be set up to ameliorate the effects of these and in turn reduce the risk of not achieving the operational targets. It is here that it must be stated emphatically that it should be the ?root causes? and the associated relationships that need to be emplaced within the model in order to achieve results that reflect the true causal relationship. The paper outlines possible sources of ?root cause? relationships and considers the outcomes of these in a case study on a large South African Gold Mine.
