Inauguration of the new political dispensation in South Africa in 1994 initiated a dynamic shift in the ownership, management and development of the country’s affluent mineral heritage. The process of substituting the old South African regime with a new equitable system, started soon after the 1994 election of the African National Congress (ANC) to parliament. The Congress’ Freedom Charter revealed the intent of the new dispensation when it called for radical transformation of mineral development. However, since 1955 there have been important changes affecting the rules of mineral development. These are: •Firstly, a drastic change in politics ushered in by negotiation, a spirit of reconciliation and a desire to settle disputes peacefully •Secondly, the globalization of the South African mining industry in tandem with the opening of domestic mineral resources to foreign capitalists; and •Thirdly, the introduction of sustainable development as a holistic approach to mineral development in order to replace traditional narrow-minded environmental management. Each of these significantly shaped the new mineral investment environment of South Africa. This paper represents a summary of the historical developments leading to the current Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act No. 28 of 2002, its Regulations, the much-publicised Broad-Based Socio-Economic Empowerment Charter and its associated Scorecard.

Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) affect the wellbeing of workers and result in poor quality work, lower work performance and decreased motivation. In contrast to ‘occupational’ diseases where there is a direct cause-and-effect relationship between hazard and disease (e.g., asbestos and asbestosis, lead and lead poisoning), ‘work-related’ diseases are multifactorial, where the work environment and the type of work that is performed contribute significantly to musculoskeletal disorders. WMSD is the term used to describe disorders and diseases of the musculoskeletal system (i.e. muscles, joints, ligaments, tendons and nerves). WMSDs are by definition a work-related phenomenon. The literature shows inarguably that certain jobs and certain work-related factors are associated with a significant risk of contracting a WMSD. It is assumed that repeated movements and postures, static work, continuous loading of the tissue structures or lack of recovery time, trigger or cause a pathological process that then manifests itself as a WMSD. This paper looks at the prevalence of the WMSD condition at three mines in South Africa: a coal, a gold and a platinum mine. Predisposing factors that include work factors, presentation of symptoms and psychological factors will be discussed in the paper.

1 Initiating Systems ? a definition An initiation system is a combination of explosive devices and component accessories specifically designed to convey a signal and initiate an explosive charge from a safe distance. In the use of explosives, the initiating system performs the functions of transmission and control of the firing signal to each explosive charge. As functional groups, initiating systems may be considered as: Starters Those which provide the initial signal to start the blasting process. Surface systems Products which provide transmission of the starter signal and delay timing (if any) across the surface of the blast outside the blast hole. In-hole systems Products which provide the signal transmission, delay timing (if any) and the initial explosives energy in the blast hole.1 2 Different types of Initiating Systems The initiation systems commonly used in Sub Saharan Africa are: ? Detonating cord and detonating relay systems ? Capped fuse and igniter cord systems ? Shock tube non electric systems ? Electric systems ? Electronic detonators 3 Overview of Electronic Delay Detonator Technology Conventional detonators use pyrotechnic delay elements and the variation of the actual delay periods is at best approximately 1% the nominal delay. The lack of guaranteed precision common to all pyrotechnic systems enhances the likelihood of negative environmental blasting effects.3 For example, take a 500 ms in hole delay. In conventional detonators this means that 95 % of shots fire within 10 ms of the mean. i.e. a window of 20 ms. Taking a fixed interval between shots of 25 ms, with a range of ± 3 ms, a very ragged firing pattern could be expected which in practice would result in non uniform fragmentation.

Introduction Zircon is a natural occurring mineral and may exhibit natural low level radioactivity. It contains trace levels (90 to120 pCi/g and 110 to 115 pCi/g respectively or 3.3 to 4.4Bq/g and 4.1 to 4.3 Bq/g) of naturally occurring radioactive uranium and thorium. This mineral is often found in a suiteof minerals (rutile, ilmenite and monazite) Due to the overlap in physical properties of monazite (containing 4–7% thorium) with some of the zircon (slight magnetic susceptibility) it often contaminates the zircon, adding to the levels of thorium in the product. Hazards associated with the products from zircon and its processing is inhalation of respirable dust (generated by milling) containing radioactive uranium and thorium which may cause cancer of the lungs. Legislature regulates the transport, use, workplace environment exposure and storage of radioactive material. In America the general regulation for the unlicensed use of low levels of radioactive materials limits the concentration to 500 ppm (U plus Th). Europe (IAEA) specifies a limit of10 Bg/g (Bequerels per gram) on the parents for transport only which is a higher level of U+Th. Companies selling into these markets need to comply with these regulations and certification is therefore required, not only of the major constituents determining the price, but of the U and Th levels as well. Exceeding the limits for U and Th may result in material being returned to the country of origin. However, for the analyst the requirement is to analyse for these elements throughout the production process as well as the analysis of the ‘tails’ that is returned to the mine area. This requires a wide range of concentration to be analysed. Methods of analysis A wide variety of methods exist for the analysis of U and Th in a range of matrices. (Table I) All these methods have been used with varying degrees of success in terms of accuracy. Overall precision for the different techniques varies from 5 to 25% relative. Time to produce results from these methods vary from a few minutes to several days. The Production Chemist is expected to produce between5 and 10 analyses per hour for process control purposes. A suitable technique that fits this requirement is X-Ray Fluorescence. Both Wavelength Dispersive (WDXRF) and Energy Dispersive X-Ray (EDX) instruments are suitable. X-Ray analysis in general has a few major advantages over competitive techniques. •It is fairly simple to set up and interferences are known and easy to correct •It has multi-element analysis capabilities •Clean spectral lines for U and Th (in zircon specifically) •Uncomplicated and easy to measure background •Low detection limits (3 to 5 ppm) •A very high degree of precision •Sample preparation is uncomplicated and fast (pressed powders and fused beads). In Zircon (ZrSiO4) processed sands the matrix is constant(>99% ZrSiO4) and the background is thus essentially constant. A typical set up for the analysis of U and Th by WDXRFis given below: X-Ray Tube Tungsten (W) Target, 2.5 to 3kW operated at 50mA/50kV Crystal LiF200 (or LIF220 for higher resolution) Analytical Lines (2?)U La1,226.14Th La1,227.47 Detector Scintillation Counter Analysis time, depending on the concentration can vary from as little as 20 seconds up to 5 minutes. Standards As with any other comparative technique XRF analysis relies heavily on the quality of the standards used. Assuming proper set-up and operation of the instrumentation as well as consistent sample preparation, accuracy is determined by the quality of the initial calibration standards. Human beings have been dependent on metals and alloys for livelihoods since time immemorial. In fact, there is irrefutable evidence that successful ancient civilizations achieved supremacy over their environments through the mastery of metals and alloys (Miller, 1995; Mtetwa, 2022). Over time, metals and alloys have evolved to become ubiquitous engineering materials indispensable to mankind, with applications in industrial and residential infrastructure, agriculture, energy generation and storage, transportation and communication systems, and manufacturing, among others (Elshkaki et al., 2018; Watari et al., 2021). Population growth, technological developments, and increase in urbanization and industrialization are all intricately linked to the intensity of use of metals and alloys. With up to 5 billion people estimated to live in urban areas by 2030 (Armstrong, 2009), the demand for metals and alloys will inevitably increase in order to satisfy the increased demand for infrastructure, machinery, and other human needs (Elshkaki et al., 2018; Watari et al., 2021). According to LePan (2022), urbanization and growth of mega-cities will increase the demand for metals and alloys, such as nickel, steel, aluminium, and copper by 116%, 50%, 57%, and 26%, respectively, between 2019 and 2035. Naturally, the production of metals and alloys from natural ores, secondary resources, and/or a combination of both, to meet this increased demand will invariably lead to the increase in generation of deleterious emissions in the form of wastes. In fact, mining and metallurgical wastes currently constitute the world’s largest anthropogenic streams by mass, often containing a high concentration of elements and compounds that can cause potential damage to natural ecosystems and humans (Hudson-Edwards et al., 2011; Lottermoser, 2011; Matinde et al., 2018; Seetharaman et al., 2022). Obviously, society’s heavy reliance on new mineral resources to drive the emerging energy transition entails that the legacy of these waste streams will continue unabated for the near-foreseeable future. The scarcity of high-grade mineral reserves, coupled with deliberate efforts to solve the anthropogenic circularity conundrum, therefore introduces a high level of urgency in the metal extraction industry to develop nascent and more eco-friendly processes and technologies. Integrating circular economy principles based on intentional configurations of circular industrial ecosystems in order to maintain the value of materials and resources in the economy for as long as possible is widely accepted as a practical approach to mitigating the negative externalities imposed by

The application of modifying factors to the Merensky Reef and UG2 Chromitite Layer has a number of challenging aspects as the deposits are tabular and consist of a number of separate geological entities that are grade bearing. The important aspects of the conversion include mineral holdings, dilution with grade bearing material, mining and geological losses, marginal cut offs and recoveries especially where open pit or weathered material is being considered. It is considered inappropriate to add material for dilution at zero grade as the associated material generally comes with an associated low grade. The Merensky Reef Is typically a pegmatoidal feldspathic pyroxenite with bounding chromitite layers. The Merensky Reef is senso stricto too narrow to be considered as a mineable entity and therefore any reserve must include material at low or marginal grades. This is further complicated as the typical mine cut or approach varies across a mine of project. This variation must be included in the mineral reserve conversion. The UG2 Chromitite Layer is typically lithologically bounded i.e. chromitite hosted. However, this adds interesting aspects particularly where leaders are intersected in the hangingwall. These can contribute to unstable hangingwall. It may be considered appropriate to include these in the mineral reserve. One of the overarching principles is that the reserve can be demonstrates to be feasible i.e. can be mined at a profit. Here aspects of a feasibility including infrastructure (power, water etc) needs to be properly considered. The paper will attempt to describe these and other relevant issues and highlight examples from experience together with proposed solutions.

Fine powders normally exhibit, to a more or lesser extent, some ability to participate in dust explosions. Zinc dust as used in the extractive metallurgy of zinc, is not known to be a reactive powder in the industry. No evidence could be found in the literature where zinc dust was involved in an explosion or explosive type event. On 3 May 2002 an explosive type incident occurred at Zincor in Springs, South Africa, which led to a fatal accident. Given the history of relative benign behaviour of zinc powders under conditions conducive to dust explosions, it was decided to share the information of this incident with industry in an effort to prevent similar incidents. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to describe the incident that occurred at Zincor, discuss the major findings, report on corrective actions, as well as publish the results of subsequent tests that were performed to determine the conditions under which zinc powder exhibits explosive characteristics.

'Increased underground extraction of coal' was the theme selected for the 1981 mining vacation school, which was held at the University of the Witwatersrand in January and February. The response of the industry to the invitation to register was so good that three separate schools of one week each were arranged between 26th January and 13th February. In terms of the total number of delegates, some 225 actually attending, the school can be described as the most successful ever organized by the Institute.

Introduction Copper and cobalt oxide mineral deposits formed by the atmospheric weathering of near surface sulphide deposits are commonplace in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The most common route for the extraction of these metals is a hydrometallurgical one in which the base metal oxides are dissolved in sulphuric acid and then concentrated further by solvent extraction. However, as many of these deposits are relatively low grade (i.e. 0.5-1.8%Co and 2-4% Cu) and can also contain large amounts of acid consuming gangue minerals (i.e. dolomitic, micaeous, and/or siliceous), the hydrometallurgical route becomes uneconomic due to the excessive acid leaching costs. Some means of pre-concentration ahead of leaching is then desirable to improve the process economics. Apart from the small scale mining (Pan. Afr. News Agency, 2000) handpicking, although not easy, oxide concentration by flotation has been suggested. For the flotation process, the two most common approaches are controlled potential sulphidisation (CPS) and the fatty acid flotation method. The preferred method is dictated by the nature of the mineral makeup of the gangue. Being secondary deposits, the gangue associated with these ores is often complex and can play a significant role in the overall flotation efficiency. Laboratory flotation experience gained from the testing of a number of different ores of this type has revealed that it is not possible to prescribe a set method for the flotation of various ore types. Each ore needs to be analysed very carefully before and after laboratory flotation on an individual basis in order to arrive at an acceptable flotation technique Laboratory flotation testwork was carried out on three different samples from the DRC in attempts to isolate some of the more important variables affecting the flotation of copper and cobalt oxide minerals from these weathered deposits. This paper describes some early results achieved and experiences gained with these different ores ahead of a more detailed flotation test program which will follow in the near future on receipt of a significant quantity of a more representative sample. Controlled Potential Sulphidisation (CPS) was used in an attempt to achieve acceptable recoveries of both copper and cobalt.

Much has been said and written about the need to reduce South Africa's dependence on gold. To compensate for the decline in the country's foreign-exchange earnings resulting from the phasing out of gold, which must inevitably occur at some future date, a far higher priority will have to be placed on the mining, beneficiation, and export of the 59 other mineral commodities produced in South Africa. The basic strategy of the mining and metallurgical industries should be to move from the traditional approach of establishing a resource base to the establishment of a market base; to turn from production orientation to market orientation; and to rely less on exploration and economies of scale and more on process innovation and product development. The enthusiasm, entrepreneurial spirit, and commitment of the leaders in the mining and metallurgical industry will clearly be of decisive importance in the establishment of new industries for the beneficiation and export of added-value mineral-based products. The State can make a significant contribution by the provision of a welldeveloped and efficient infrastructure, including rail and harbour facilities, communications and health services, roads, and of electricity and water supplies. In our search for a new development strategy for the beneficiation and export of South Africa's minerals, we need to recognize that no one nation has all the mineralresources that it needs. Commercial and strategic manipulation of mineral supplies should no longer be tolerated. The future of the human species lies in international cooperation and in a greater understanding of the limitations of the world we live in.

Researchers at Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) CANMET Mining and Mineral Sciences Laboratories (CANMET-MMSL) and Mining Technologies International (MTI) have designed and built a hybrid diesel-electric mining loader that is the first of its kind to be developed for underground mines. Diesel equipment is popular because of its mobility and most mining operations are reluctant to replace it with tethered electrical equipment despite the obvious elimination of diesel contaminants and significantly lower heat generation (? 35% of an equivalent diesel). However, a diesel-electric vehicle, being currently evaluated by CANMET-MMSL, could be beneficial. In this unit, a constant load diesel generator feeds batteries which, in turn, powers electrical motors that drive the equipment. In a hybrid diesel-electric unit, the constant load diesel generator can be optimized for minimal emissions and hence lower dilution air requirements. This paper will present the project status and the anticipated benefits for mining operations through the application of this technology.

Jackleg rock drills expose their operators to high hand-arm vibration levels. To address this problem, an antivibration handle has been developed. The antivibration properties of the handle were achieved through a suspension based on a hinge design, achieved with a torsion spring and o-rings. To provide some bench marking for this new handle and to follow the evolution of its performance over time, a test bench was developed to characterize the vibration emission values of jackleg drills under controlled operating conditions. Testing of four antivibration handles on the test bench have shown reductions of the overall weighted acceleration level in the order of 54 % to 60 %, with most of the attenuation occurring in the zh-axis at the rock drill percussion frequency.

Background- History The most significant change in mining since the late 1970?s has been the emergence of very large scale mining operations , which have been developed to ensure profitability with relatively low grade ores. These large tonnage operations have resulted in the development of larger unit sized machines in all operations of beneficiation, solid-liquid separation and dewatering. Often only a few flotation lines are installed and tonnages up to 25 ktpd and beyond are not uncommon. The increased throughputs have led to the development of circular, reactor type tank designs. The reactor cell system is the most up to date flotation cell design to utilise the principles of circular cell design. The Svedala DV mechanism was specially developed to suit the RCS machine giving good solids handling characteristics and excellent metallurgical performance. Development of UG2 ore type flotation equipment The equipment was developed and optimised by Svedala process from 1995. A higher energy specification was requested by industry. This amounted to 3kW/m3 for installed volume. Existing designs were at 1.5kW/m3. Hence various modifications were required to achieve the required power input. The first 50m3 machines were installed and developed at Impala Platinum?s UG2 circuit over a one year period. Once reliability and performance was achieved, over 300 large volume flotation cells were installed at Anglo Platinum and Lonmin operations as well. Pilot Plant Development The Impala Platinum High Energy pilot plant was commissioned in 2002 and had an installed power exceeding 5kW/m3. It was operated for over a year at the tailings dam booster station and was fundamental to the large scale scavenging plant design. All experience in overcoming mechanical and operational problems was applied in scale up design principles. A very robust mechanism was designed to accommodate the additional power input from installed motors, as well as the high SG (>1.5) of the feed source. The pilot plant flowsheet is shown in the figure below.

Hulamin Rolled Products (Ltd) developed a high Mn and Si containing alloy, EN 4017 as a scrap consuming alloy from the waste generated in producing their range of clad products for brazing of inter alia automotive heat exchangers. The multifaceted composition of this alloy (Al -1.2 wt% Si -1.1 wt% Mn -0.2 wt% Mg-0.26 wt% Cu) suggested that it might display some degree of strengthening via precipitate formation of the Mg2 Si-types. The aging isotherms constructed showed that EN 4017 with 0.19% Mg reached a lower peak strength (YS~210 MPa and UTS~260 MPa)compared to the EN 4017 material with 0.43% Mg (YS~270 MPa and UTS~325 MPa). The higher Mg variant of EN 4017 was comparable with the age-hardenable reference alloy EN 6061. Selected area electron diffraction (SAED) studies proved that the microstructure of age hardened EN 4017 contained a combination of ß', ß" and U2 phase after being aged at 175ºC for 65 h. The general microstructure contained precipitate free zones as well as grain boundary Si films, although these did not lead to significant embrittlement. The role of Mn dispersoids in the fracture mechanism of 4017 is also discussed. The article will compare the behaviour of EN 4017 with that EN6061. This paper describes mining industry funded research that is being undertaken to address the critical gaps and uncertainties in our knowledge so that we can develop new approaches and create more effective ways for predicting the reliability of rock slopes in large open pit mines. It is envisaged that this research will not only lead to more effective pit slope design but further reduce the potential for unforseen geotechnical risks by enabling the geotechnician to communicate the risks more effectively with management and to optimise site specific control measures. To achieve this, several research tasks are in hand. The first is to accurately represent the structured rock mass with a 3D computer model (Siromodel) that creates polyhedral blocks from structural distribution data characterised by position, orientation and persistence. Siromodel is being coupled with particle flow and other numerical codes to evaluate how the structured rock mass deforms in the stress environment of an open pit and how a candidate failure surface may propagate through the dilating rock mass along the path of the least shear and/or tension resistance. A beta version of the Siromodel software has been distributed to 20 Sponsor mine sites for technical evaluation. The end state is to develop methods of analysis that characterise the reliability of a described candidate surface, and the probability of the candidate surface propagating to failure, recognising that the rock mass strength may well be defined in a different way than before.

The Pt-based alloys have a high potential for replacing some Ni-based superalloys (NBSAs) used in the highest temperature and most aggressive environments, and vanadium would be a beneficial alloying element. Six alloys of average compositions Pt-26.6Al-9.1V, Pt-23.1Al-17.8V, Pt-9.6Al-21.1V, Pt-17.4Al-6.4V, Pt-22.3Al-7.9V, and Pt-6.0Al-10.1V (all in at.%) were manufactured by arc-melting and examined in the as-cast condition using scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Five samples were heat treated at 1 000°C for 1 500 hours and water quenched, then examined. The phases were identified using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and the identities were confirmed by XRD. In most of the samples, the phases existing in the as-cast condition were different from those at 1 000°C after ~1500 hours heat treatment. A solidification projection, an isothermal section and a liquidus surface projection were determined for the Pt-rich corner.

Poor phase separation and fine dissemination of the desired components within congruous slag phases are key challenges limiting the recoverability of values from slags by conventional beneficiation methods. Slag microstructure conditioning is a pragmatic approach to increasing themvalue-in-use of discard slags, especially when integrated with the broader smelter infrastructure. Although not yet tested on oxide slag systems, this paper explores the potential application of magnetohydrodynamic principles to the crystallization behaviour of bulk slags. Integrating the slag microstructure conditioning infrastructure to the existing smelter infrastructure is key to unlocking the economic value of slags because it is most economic to condition the properties of molten slag directly after tapping. A new business model that integrates smelting units to transversalmeconomic activities, such as cement production and suppliers of construction aggregates, canmsignificantly increase the circularity of metallurgical slags.
