Reactivity of ammonium nitrate based explosives is associated with the presence of iron sulfides in the ground reacting with explosive products and in some instances causing spontaneous reactions which can lead to detonation. The stability of explosive products can also be linked to in-hole density, which influences detonation efficiency, breakage performance and the potential generation of Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) fumes. Reactive ground testing involves detecting a temperature rise of a mixture of a bulk explosive product sample, a ground rock sample and some specific chemical agents. This paper describes improvements in reactive ground testing involving the use of time lapse video analysis and detection of NOX gas emissions from the sample. Reactivity is stored and linked to a using cloud based software to map of the mine showing the exact location of the sample. The location marker can be selected to allow quick access to the sample test results and video. In addition to reactivity, the stability and detonation performance of bulk product can also be influenced by depth. In this paper, a system that simulates product at depth and measures density changes and monitors the structure of bulk samples is described. Results from an explosive product are analyzed and detonation performance is assessed by the measurement of velocity of detonation and detonation pressure.

Multi-face destress blasting is the basic method of reducing rock bursts hazard in Polish copper mines. Blasting operations of this type are carried out regularly, twice a day in order to minimize the geomechanical threat while maintaining high extraction efficiency. Unfortunately, the assessment of the effectiveness of this type of work until recently was based solely on determining whether a given destress blasting triggered a seismic tremor or not. Information on the characteristics of seismic waves generated by blasting has so far been omitted in analyzes of this type. The lack of reliable knowledge about the generated seismic effect makes the introduction of constructive corrective actions impossible, which in turn significantly reduces the triggering potential of conducted destress blasting. This study presents the results of comprehensive work aimed at increasing the effectiveness of active rock burst prevention in Lubin underground copper mine. For this purpose, an innovative system for continuous monitoring of seismic waves induced by multi-face blasting was developed, and a new method for seismic assessment of the effectiveness of the destress activities was developed. Based on the monitoring data and the comprehensive analysis of waveforms, the effectiveness of individual blasting operations was determined, and on this basis, modifications to the drilling and blasting patterns aimed at increasing the generated seismic effect were proposed. The use of innovative methods of monitoring and data analysis made it possible to increase the effectiveness of the conducted activities, in terms of the magnitude of seismic vibrations, up to 250%. It should be emphasized that the introduced modifications were aimed at increasing the effectiveness of blasting operations while maintaining the current level of costs. As a result, the proposed solution turned out to be highly effective, significantly affecting the safety of the work carried out in Polish copper mines. Thus the proposed approach is planned to be implemented in other Polish copper mines belonging to KGHM in the near future

A cooperative effort between a blasting vibration consultant, a blasting contractor, and personnel from the City of Las Vegas has dramatically reduced complaints from residential areas near developmental blasting projects. The principal methods used involved the preparation of an informative video recording which presents various aspects of the blasting operations, the design of a distinctive flyer which is attached to residential doors, and pre-blast meetings for information dissemination.

Occidental Oil Shale Inc. has spent the last eight years at its Logan Wash. mine near DeBeque, Colorado, developing its modified in-situ oil shale process for obtaining oil from oil shale. Modified in-situ technology involves large underground chambers, or retorts, which are formed by mining out a minimal volume of rock to allow explosive expansion of the surrounding rock into tile mined void volumes. The resulting rubblized retort volume must contain a fairly uniform particle size distribution and void distribution to permit maximum oil recovery during subsequent in-situ processing operations. The more uniform the rubblized volume of particles, the more oil recovery obtained during processing. The processing involves first igniting the top of the retort and then. injecting air into the top of the retort to drive the combustion front downward through the entire rubblized volume. The oil is continuously collected at the bottom of the retort during the processing.

In late 2008 Xstrata Newlands Coal Mine in Central Queensland and Orica Mining Services engaged in discussion to investigate methodologies to change their current mining practices and overcome the issues in the mining of steeply dipping coal seams, the associated coal loss risk and to assist in improving mining productivity. A strategy was developed and it was determined that through-seam blasting was essential to the success of winning the coal from the Wollombi Pit at Newlands.

Blasting specifications and guidelines are very important aspects of detailed project specifications covering any scope of work (SOW) that involves explosives and blasting procedures. A lot of larger construction or tunneling projects require some degree of project specifications for the entire scope of work on such project, including blasting specifications. It is important that all blasting specifications effectively and accurately address all explosives and blasting concerns associated with the SOW for such project. This includes safety and security, required personnel and their associated responsibilities, procedures and applications involving explosives, blast design and planning, blast monitoring and reporting, quality assurance and quality control, and local, state, and federal regulations and limitations. With the of wide range of information required in blasting and overall project specifications along with the risks associated with work involving explosives, it is also important to ensure qualified personnel are involved in interpreting or compiling and approving any blasting specifications and guidelines. The purpose of the following paper is to explore and present the basic information, as summarized above, that should be included and considered in the creation of detailed blasting specifications and guidelines. Detailed information is presented in specific relation to a potential bid package that would be compiled for a construction or tunneling project requiring protective or high-profile blasting.

The safety of persons from accidental explosions and fires during manufacture, storage, transport etc. of explosives, pyrotechnics, propellants, firework and ammunition is most commonly assessed according to prescriptive rule-based approach: Safety is given when all requirements which are listed in numerous regulations and directives (such as e.g. safety distances, limited quantities, protective installations etc.) are complied with. Such a deterministic prescriptive rule-based approach is quite easy to apply but has got disadvantages, however: The actual state of safety in a specific case is not explicitly and quantitatively expressed, and it is not distinguished between the endangered individuals and the whole group. As a result, the effects of the safety measures cannot be measured. This is why uneconomical and in the worst case useless safety precautions cannot be avoided. In addition, waivers are difficult to negotiate, meaningful and sound arguments for pro and con being lacking.

Since explosives are the source of all energy used for rock blast fragmentation and heave, multidimensional effects in the detonation driving zone become essential to better describe the detonation process. In order to use the explosive as an energy source-information for more realist blasting performance simulations, a simple and effective modelling strategy is desirable. Facing this challenge, an engineering approach to two-dimensional unconfined non-ideal detonation is proposed. Based on the elliptical construction of the shock locus, the model combines the axial cylindrical stick Q1D solution with some additional limiting conditions to determine the sonic edge of the charge. For a given set of rate law parameters and velocity of detonation, a complete axial solution is firstly computed through the Q1D model. From this solution, a vital relationship between the axial shock curvature with the shock shape parameters can be stablished. Once this relationship is found, the problem simply reduces in finding the shock shape parameters subject to the sonic edge condition. As a result of this calculation, the corresponding charge diameter can be found. Consequently, the proposed model can map the diametereffect curve by relating the unconfined velocity of detonation with its corresponding diameter. Finally, because of its low computation cost, the proposed engineering approach can be also used for characterizing the rate law parameters by fitting to data from unconfined detonation experiments

Rio Tinto’s Colowyo Coal Mine produces 2.1 million tons per year in northwest Colorado. Colowyo uses the terrace mining method to recover up to seven coal seams ranging in thickness from 5 to 20 feet. Coal recovery in the 6 foot thick high grade C-seam has recently been challenged due to large variations in the pitch and roll of the seam. As well, some coal damage was seen due to an increased thickness of the overburden consisting of a hard sandstone channel.

This paper discusses the theory and experiment involved in the discovery of the mechanisms of Linear Shaped Charges, which are much different from those for Conical Shaped Charges. Linear Shaped Charges (LSC) have been assumed to function in the same manner as Conical Shaped Charges (CSC) in the published literature on the subject. Much work has been done on CSC for military purposes, but there is limited information about the mechanics of LSC. Previous theories have cited the formation of a Monroe Jet as the dominant process. The Monroe Effect describes what happens to a target below the charge following detonation of the charge, and prescribes a fluid jet process for penetration. The fluid jet comprised of the liner material is the cutting device in CSC and has been extensively studied. Recent work at the University of Missouri at Rolla (UMR) cutting concrete with LSC has surprisingly shown that there is not a fluid jet process in LSC. After completing several reinforced concrete penetration tests, minimally deformed copper blades were found in the debris. Initially, the blades were suspected to be misfires or malfunctioned charge remnants. However, results were good and blades were found after every single test. Upon closer inspection, the ribbons were found to be folded copper and they were suspected to be the bottom liner of the LSC. A test series was conducted to verify the new theory by experiment.
