Paper presented at the IAGOD international symposium on mineralization related to mafic and ultramafic rocks held in Orleans, France, 1-3 September 1993. A lithological and geochemical study revealed significant lateral variation of the interval over 170 km of strike, from about 30 m at the Union Section to 220 m near Brits. The cumulates also become more evolved and leucocratic with distance from the Union Section both towards the NE (Amandelbult) and SE (Impala, Rustenburg and Brits). It is inferred that the persistent heat flux from a putative major feeder zone near the Union Section impaired deposition of felsic cumulates in the vicinity, delaying crystallisation of successive phases in parts of the chamber near the feeder. New influxes were therefore deposited on a footwall of varying thickness and lithology in response to different degrees of crystallisation and accumulation along strike. The development of cyclic units of chromitite, harzburgite, pyroxenite, norite and anorthosite was interrupted at different stages in different parts of the chamber

Evidence of metallogenic activity in an area dominated by Upper Precambrian and Palaeozoic metasediments was partially explained in the 1980s when drilling and a geophysical survey detected hidden intrusions, but questions remained to be answered about the nature of the fluids. Sb mineralisation at El Juncalon vein-type deposit was selected for geological, geochemical and fluid inclusion studies as a model with a relatively simple quartz-stibnite-pyrite paragenesis. Many of the characteristics were those of Chinese-type vein Sb deposits, which can be regarded as atypical of the epithermal type as they are hosted by clastic rocks

Paper presented at Mineralisation in the Caledonides, the Mike Gallagher memorial meeting held in Edinburgh, 27-28 June 1996. Quantitative point analysis and microchemical mapping identified 52 different types of mineral in inclusions, usually ranging in size from 5 to less than 1 micrometre, inherited from source bedrock. A combination of grain chemistry, heterogeneity and inclusions provides a grain signature reflecting the type and history of source mineralisation. Several grains from an alluvial site are needed, to allow for bedrock variation and the presence of inclusions in only 10-20% of grains. A total of 1 530 grains obtained from 30 localities in Scotland were of ten types, two of them minor variants. Two types in the Highlands may be related to centres of Caledonian igneous activity, but the most widespread is likely to have been of deep-seated origin and structurally controlled. Gold in the Ochil Hills is probably from a source associated with Devonian andesitic activity. In the Southern Uplands, grain types reflect two separate episodes of mesothermal lode gold mineralisation and relationships with Permian red beds/mafic volcanics and with Tertiary dykes

A petrographic and microthermometric study of fluid inclusions in the Kentstown Granite, crosscutting quartz (VI) and calcite+quartz (V 2) veins in the granite and calcite+quartz (V 2) veins in the overlying sediments was performed on samples taken from the borehole. Comparisons of the type 1, type 2 and type 3 fluid inclusion populations recorded in the present study with those from other Irish Caledonian granites strongly suggest a similar fluid evolutionary history. Furthermore, the low-temperature CaC12-rich brines (type 5) of this study, which must be syn- to post-Lower Carboniferous in age, have correlatives both in Irish Caledonian granites and in the Lower Carboniferous base-metal deposits of the Irish midlands

Gwynfynydd is a small, high-grade black shale-hosted vein-gold deposit. The Chidlaw Link Zone is the only area being mined and contains 24 000 t ore grading 15.2 g/t gold. Within the Link Zone a complex vein structure occurs consisting of a mother vein up to 5 m thick and narrow (less than 0.5 m) leader veins. The former shows minor variations in dip, strike and thickness, whereas the latter show marked changes in all three. The leader veins are hosted within the footwall zone of the mother vein and both are composed of quartz with galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, pyrite and minor arsenopyrite. The vein system is transected by a series of cross-vein and intra-vein dip-slip faults. Pockets of gold occur at vein intersections or branches and within the complex footwall zone and are often related to variations in vein attitude and/or geometry. The Chidlaw Link Zone displays a complex, erratic distribution of gold mineralisation and a multi-stage history of structural activity, fluid flow and mineral deposition

Geochemical studies of the bauxite deposits show that the primary composition is gibbsitic. Some trace elements were relatively mobile during bauxite formation with the content of Th, U and Zr increasing and that of Rb, Ni and Co decreasing. Y and Pb were relatively immobile during lateritisation; their contents and ratios were inherited from different types of underlying rocks. The supply of Ni and Co took place at the diagenetic or epigenetic stages; their ultimate source was the crystalline basement in the region. The studies support the view that the bauxite was likely to have originated as a result of in-situ lateritisation and not through sedimentary transport and redeposition

Carbon anode cells were studied by two-dimensional computer simulation to evaluate their suitability for alumina electrolysis at high superficial current densities. The most efficient anode arrangement was needed to overcome the electrochemical disadvantages of alumina's low solubility in chlorides. Cells with packed-bed anodes might provide practical superficial current densities greater than 0.67 A/cm2 when the granule size was less than 1 cm, but in the process of electrolysis the granules within the active zone would be consumed and become smaller, affecting alumina concentration transport. For zones of very small granules a concentration-dependent model should be considered; for more complete consideration a time-dependent model can be introduced to describe the variation of granule size and its influence on mass transfer and polarisation

The 1986 geochemical survey was successful in recognising all the previously known mineral occurrences of significance in Jamaica, in outlining areas not previously believed to have mineral potential and in stimulating fresh appraisals of old occurrences in terms of their potential for new commodities. Paper presented at the 28th International Geological Congress held in Washington DC, July 1989 (International geochemical mapping sessions). The results suggest that meaningful geochemical maps can be produced from very low-density surveys, and that existing data sets could perhaps be incorporated into such a map series with the use of a system such as Uniras software. There are still many problems to be resolved, however, including the compatibility of data derived from different analytical methods, and the precise methods to be employed will necessarily require international agreement. Sampling densities should be chosen on the basis of the scale of the geochemical and geological features to be distinguished and will vary from region to region. Reanalysis of selected samples from archives to increase the range of elements determined or to unify analytical methods is only likely to be effective if the original survey was at quite a low density

An assessment of the combined application of remotely sensed satellite imagery, geobotany and biogeochemistry reveals the complementary value of these techniques in the Thalanga area. The SPOT imagery yields useful information on features of the terrain and discriminates the gossan over the ore zone. Geobotany differentiates geological units and the anomalous vegetation provides visual expression of the surface presence of the ore zone, while biogeochemistry effectively locates its concealed extension below Tertiary sediments and ferricrete

The design and scheduling of open pit operations are consistent problems encountered by the surface mining industry. Numerous techniques and algorithms have been developed to assist the mining engineer in the creation of optimum development strategies. Virtually all the practical techniques that have been produced have concentrated on one of the aspects (limit definition or scheduling) at the expense of the other. It has long been recognised, however, that the two activities are intrinsically linked and thus solving either problem independently of the other can only ever produce sub-optimal results as a whole. This has been termed the "circular reasoning problem". It has also been recognised that, for all practical-sized situations, solving both problems simultaneously is virtually impossible using conventional techniques due to the massive size of the search space involved. A technique is presented which is based on a self-learning genetic algorithm, which provides a combined pit limit and extraction schedule simultaneously in order to maximise the NPV (net present value) of the extraction. The theory is developed in two-dimensions and a number of examples of its application are presented. It is proposed that this approach is a highly efficient, heuristic technique offering the potential to transcend the circular reasoning difficulties of separate pit limit and extraction scheduling systems. Extension of the technique into three-dimensions and its application to realistic problem sizes are discussed

No completely reliable method for characterising and quantifying airborne dust risk exists. A new monitoring technology has been developed whereby dust collected from four-way directional and high volume samplers is analysed for mineral content and particle size for integrated dust mapping. A dust database was set up for the area surrounding the Ffos Las open cast coal site in South Wales. It included XRD directional traces from 17 gauges over 20 months, XRD traces from window ledges in the nearby communities, the major soil types in the area, dust data from haulage roads and public roads and reference-type mineral samples. The database can be accessed relationally to compare and analyse the data using mineral, direction, time, weather and geographical relationships. The data has been used to assess areas of low, intermediate and high levels of risk from dust fall-out

Concentrates of titaniferous minerals containing around 30 wt% Ta2O5 are processed hydrometallurgically by hydrofluoric acid leaching and solvent extraction, followed by the precipitation of hydrated potassium heptafluorotantalate. A fundamental study of the thermodynamics of this precipitation and recrystallisation was undertaken to increase understanding of the conditions most conducive to the production of pure, well-crystallised K2TaF7. Activity-pH diagrams for the Ta-K-F-H2O system explained the dissolution of Ta2O5 in fluoride solutions quite well and also the precipitation-recrystallisation of K2TaF7.H2O. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy confirmed the thermodynamic observations. It was concluded that the best precipitating agent for K2TaF7 from fluoride solutions is KF but a recrystallisation step in a HF environment produces purer, well-crystallised K2TaF7.H2O, eliminating oxy-salts and other impurities

Non-contact systems for measuring underground voids have used theodolites, reflective or non-reflective laser methods and sonar techniques. An effective but cheaper alternative is based on use of a Wild T1000 electronic theodolite coupled to a Leica Data DISTO and a Wild GRE3 data logger. The software used to process the theodolite data is a spreadsheet and macro combination, while Surpac, Datamine and AutoCAD modelling packages have been investigated for viewing the tunnel profiles. The main limitations were found to be blinding, when irregularities in the stope obstructed the line of sight, and the 30 m range of the Data DISTO model used in the study, although more powerful models are available. All three modelling packages proved suitable, with Surpac providing the best-quality printed images of the voids surveyed and AutoCad by far the cheapest alternative

Synthesis report on a project carried out under the EC-funded BRITE-EURAM programme. A prototype high-resolution electromagnetic system, based on the theory of controlled-source magnetotellurics, was developed. The electrical source field is fed into the earth by dipoles at preselected frequencies and a multi-channel receiver measures five electric and three orthogonal magnetic fields. Suitable mapping algorithms and spatial filters are applied to the data and a new technique permits calibration during measurement. The system was field tested over a blind orebody, at 250-550 m depth, in the Aguas Tenidas area of the Iberian Pyrite Belt. Ten lines totalling 12 000 m of profile length were completed in seven days and the orebody was identified. Tests in the Irish Midlands suffered from strong electromagnetic interference of cultural origin

The principles of shear-driven aggregation of particulate matter suspended in fluids, a common industrial method of concentration and separation, were applied to a convecting magma to estimate the time required to sparge or strip the PGE and Cr content and concentrate it into the boundary layers. It was calculated that an ore-grade (e.g. 6 ppm PGE) boundary layer about 1 m thick would require 100 000 years at most to form from a body of magma 500 m deep with a PGE content of 20 ppb. Since concentration would be most vigorous when the magma was warmest, at least half of this concentration would take place in the first 10 000 years. The effect of dispersive pressure in the boundary layer would generate a concentration high of refractories just below the top of each boundary layer and another just above the bottom. If the magma was a double-diffusive system, it might evolve by the downward cascade of enriched boundary-layer material into the hotter, lower magma layers, where depending on saturation levels chromites would equilibrate and sulphides undergo partial or total resorption, enriching PGE levels in any remaining sulphides. This cascade process would in time greatly enrich the lower regions in PGE-bearing sulphides and chromites

Ore reserves are inadequately defined. Geological reconnaissance and pre-feasibility mining work generate a broad range of valid tonnage estimates, many published for the benefit of various interests, who may view all figures as reserves. This work reviews the regular estimation of tonnages, grades and relevant factors for single deposits. A consistent framework of definition is suggested which, by conforming to the known structures of feasibility studies and long-range plans, avoids the pitfalls of over-categorisation and of unrealistic promises. Variations of the temperature and steam/moisture content of the air with distance and time are modelled for a single airway. The input for the simulation is an air temperature that varies with time, together with the moisture/steam content that results, for example, from a fire with a given distribution of heat and of fume concentrations at the beginning of the airway. The transport of heat and moisture to the surface of the wallrock is assumed to be simultaneous. Such multiphase convection may result in evaporation from the moist wall close to the fire and recondensation downstream. The modelling of this non-linear effect is a unique feature of the new simulation. A new analytical solution is used to calculate the conduction of transient heat within the rock mantle, which, in the event of a fire, is typically a short-term process. This allows for an arbitrary variation of surface temperature with time - unlike that permitted by the age function solution, which is limited to stepped temperature changes. An iterative numerical scheme that has recently been developed to simulate mine climate is used to calculate the coupled transient heat conduction and multiphase surface heat transport in successive length increments along the airway. To demonstrate the simulation procedure a numerical example is presented in which a fire with a given distribution of heat and fume concentrations with time is located at the beginning of an airway
