"The smelter slags represented silicate crystalline rock with medium to coarse-grained structure with spinifex skeletal network of olivine in hedenbergite matrix. Accessory magnetite, pyrrhotite and copper sulfides chalcopyrite, bornite, covellite, chalcocite and digenite occurred in dissemination in silicate matrix. The sample was studied by optical and electron microscopy with support of quantitative XRD. Modal mineralogical composition included olivine, pyroxene, magnetite, chalcopyrite, quartz, pyrrhotite. Copper deportment showed copper distributed in chalcopyrite (40 %), cuprite (22 %), covellite (21 %), bornite, chalcocite, digenite (5 %), Cu-bearing pyrrhotite (4 %) and spinel (2%). Liberation of copper minerals in the material ground to P80=71 µm was good with over 90 % sulfides in free grains and floatable binaries. The results showed theoretical possibility of 65 % copper recovery by flotation. Conclusion based on mineralogical data was precisely confirmed with flotation tests studies that proved to recover around 60 % of copper to commercial grade concentrate. INTRODUCTION Annual world copper matte smelter slags production is estimated to be millions of tones and contain thousands tones of unrecovered Cu, Zn and significant amounts of Ag and Au. Mineralogical study of one large processing sample of material of historical piles of Cu matte smelter slag was carried out to find possibility to recover copper and define theoretical recovery by flotation. The study of the slag material was aimed to determine possibility of upgrading the material on existing copper flotation plant to develop additional mineral resources. The objectives for mineralogical investigation were to target for best liberation fineness, determine theoretical recovery and possible concentrate quality for sulfide flotation tests. MATERIALS AND METHODS Large representative processing sample was collected by mixing of 120 t of slag material representatively excavated from historical piles of Cu matte smelter slag. The sample was used to define the processing technology to recover copper and gold from the material."

"Steam Pressure Filtration (SPF) is a modified cake filtration process and is characterized by both washing and excellent de-watering of the filter cake. Compared to conventional gas differential pressure filtration, the filter cake is treated with saturated or superheated steam replacing pressurized air. Invented in the early last century, Steam Pressure Filtration has reached technical maturity in the 1990ies for inorganic particle systems, fine chemicals and coal. Especially the de-watering performance for fine particles systems below 50 µm make Steam Pressure Filtration an excellent option for the processing of fine tailings streams, to produce a stable material, which can be described by the methods of solids mechanics instead of paste rheology. The washing, which is due to the condensing steam, is able to reduce the ion load of the solid. This additional effect is able to generate a dry tailings material, which shows a reduced leaching potential of mobile ions, which originally derive from the process water. INTRODUCTION Steam Pressure Filtration is a process concept especially of hyperbaric filtration, which started its market entry in the 1990ies (Bott 1996, Bott 2002). Even though there have been many attempts to apply steam on filters before, the success story began with the combination of hyperbaric filtration and steam application and the technical solution to limit the steam treatment to a defined zone on the filter. This resulted from the scientific findings that steam mainly enhances the de-watering during the mechanical filtration (Gerl 1999). There are no or minor positive effects of steam application to a filtration process during cake filtration and after the steam breakthrough has occurred. Furthermore that time a sufficient control technology to regulate the steam consumption as well as suitable filter cloths became available. There is a growing need for de-watering technology in the mining industry, not only for the concentrate but also for the tailings streams. Several reasons argue against the established solution of damping the tails as suspension or paste into tailings ponds. There are ecological, political, societal and economic reasons, which question the tailings ponds more and more. Due to the increasing costs in the building and monitoring of tailings dams, which contain the tailing ponds, the concept of dry stocking using filtration technology comes into the game (Jansson 2016). Dry stocking converts the tailings stream form the suspension or paste state, into a material, which can be stockpiled. The latter typically is a moist flowable disperse particle system. The conversion involves a de-watering step, in which different types of filter equipment can be used, e.g. filter presses, membrane filter presses, automatic press filters or hyperbaric filters. For coarse products also vacuum filter can be applied. Due to its excellent de-watering performance and the easy scale-up properties Steam Pressure Filtration is further option for dry tailings stacking."

"Pyrrhotite in nickel-copper sulphide ores is nickeliferrous and intimately associated with pentlandite. Due to its low nickel content, pyrrhotite rejection is an important step in processing of these ores. In our laboratory, various reagents were investigated for their effect on pyrrhotite depression. Among these, a combined use of triethylenetetramine and sodium metabisulphite was found highly promising.The work described in this paper has two parts. The firs part is a summary of results obtained on process samples from the pyrrhotite rejection circuit at Falconbridge’s Strathcona Mill. The second part involves simulation of the circuit performance based on the reagent conditions used in the experimental work and the concept of split factors.Two sets of reagent conditions were evaluated. The first one involved baseline conditions, simulating the current reagent performance. The second one simulated the impact these new reagents can have on the circuit performance.The simulation results obtained under baseline conditions indicated a good agreement with the current circuit performance. The simulation results suggest that at practically the same pentlandite recovery and tailing grades, the circuit concentrate nickel grade can be doubled through effective pyrrhotite rejection by these new reagents."

"The flexibility of the PlantStar control platform has enabled Mintek to investigate and easily develop new control strategies for both milling and flotation. This includes a Solids Feed Controller, a Safety Limit Controller, Mill Power Optimiser and Flotation Optimiser, amongst others.The solids feed controller was developed for minerals processing plants using a specialised time delay compensator. Using conventional time delay compensators that are purely model based, results in robustness problems due to model uncertainties. The Mintek Solid Feeds Controller makes use of a plant model, but compensates for model inaccuracies, giving more controller stability and a more robust delay compensation algorithm.The safety limit controller has been developed to switch smoothly between normal and safety control loops without bumping the process. The safety loop output is chosen in accordance with a predefined list of priorities and whether the respective constraint boundaries are exceeded.The Mill Power Optimiser helps to find the power peak on the mill power curve. This insures maximum grind with maximum throughput. It also prevents power dips due to mill overloads, making the milling circuit easier to operate.The flotation optimiser algorithm analyses trends of all accessible variables in the process. The algorithm uses this information to calculate operating conditions that will control the residence times, mass pulls and circulating loads within a flotation circuit to a specified setpoint. Research is being done to now optimise these setpoints in order to achieve better recovery."

This paper presents an arcuate magnetic separator to remove the grinding ball fragment directly from the mill discharge, which will cause wear to downstream processing equipment such as pump, hydro cyclones and pebble crusher. Furth more this type separator was applied in Wushan mine under China National Group Corporation in China. After months of operation, the equipment has been a success. This investigation was undertaken to assess the possibility of ash and sulfur removal by microbial action of high sulfur-content coal. Thiobacillus ferrooxidans and Thiobacillus thiooxidans have been used for biodesulfurization of coal. Feed samples were provided from Tabas coal mine located in Yazd province, Iran. The sample contained 28.80% ash and 2.30% sulfur. Flotation tests were implemented to optimize the effective parameters in these cells which were constant during bio-flotation tests. According to the results, obtained from various tests using Taguchi orthogonal array design (L27), the values of optimized parameters were pH at 7, 1000 g/t gas oil as a collector, 10% solid content, 15 min conditioning time, 100 g/t MIBC as a frother and 800 rev/min rotor speed. Bio-flotation tests are carried out by means of laboratory double discharge cell and mesophilic bacteria as depressant reagent using above mentioned optimized parameters. The bio-flotation experiments were conducted based on a Taguchi orthogonal array design (L9) with four variables (bacteria type, bacteria count, rotor speed of mixer and bio-conditioning time). The collected data was analyzed by using DX7.0, Minitab14.0 and WinRobust1.02 softwares for evaluation the effect of each parameter on the optimization criteria. Considering the highest combustible recovery and the lowest ash and sulfur content, the value of optimized bacteria type, bacteria count, rotor speed of mixer and bio-conditioning time were Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, 5×107 cells/g(coal), 100 rev/min and 20 min respectively. Under this condition, ash and sulfur content and combustible recovery were predicted 12.39%, 2.08% and 82.03% respectively.

"In Brazil, there are no official reserves of molybdenum, and the unofficial reserves are modest. Therefore, the molybdenum ore (molybdenite) produced as a co-product or by-product of emerald mining in the region of Campo Formoso, BA, has arisen as the only economic option. The flotation process is commonly used in Brazil for the recovery of molybdenite from emerald mining tailings, but it produces low-content molybdenite concentrates, thereby resulting in a product with low economic value. The molybdenite concentrate produced in Campo Formoso contains 83.5% MoS2 (50% Mo), which is less than the international standard product that contains > 90% MoS2 (54% Mo).This low value is due to the presence of talc, which is a naturally hydrophobic mineral that is also floated with the molybdenite during the flotation process. Separability studies were done in a Partridge-Smith cell using dextrin and quebracho as a molybdenite depressor in solution at different concentrations and pH values to produce a technical-grade concentrate (i.e., 90% MoS2). These basic studies were accompanied by measurements of the zeta potential and contact angle, which was determined by the capillary rise method. The results of these floatability studies were used in bench flotation tests, which were performed in a Denver laboratory flotation cell. A molybdenite concentrate of 93.4% MoS2 was obtained when dextrin was used at a concentration of 100 g/t."

Turkey?s EU affairs started in 1963 with the Ankara Treaty. On 31 December 1995 the Customs Union between Turkey and the European Union came into effect. In order to achieve the Copenhagen Criteria?s, Turkey, made laws parallel to the Framework Programs. On 3 October 2005, with the confirmation of ?Membership Framework Document? the negotiation process of Turkey has started. Coal had important role in the industrialization of EU and it is directly related to Energy and Environmental subjects. In this point many restriction became with the some protocols, in last decades. European Union composed Energy and Coal Policy, therefore engaged to reduce the emissions, and made new regulations. This regulations concern Turkey?s energy future, since large; but low quality of lignite reserves of Turkey, it is expected to have some difficulties with Union?s Environmental Legislation during Turkey?s congruity process. With the last natural gas import agreements of Turkey, the production and consumption of coal sunk in last seven years. However, considering environmental sustainability, the role of coal in energy production will rise up in the coming future. In this paper, in terms of Turkey Energy Sector, production and consumption problems of coal discussed and evaluated considering EU?s coal, energy and environmental rudiments.

"Deep concentration of iron ores involves extraction, in addition to magnetite concentrate, of hematite and martite concentrates and recovery of other valuable components. A flotation technology was designed specifically for finely disseminated hematite ore, allowing producing saleable hematite concentrate containing 64-66% Fe. The main process challenge is caused by the presence of other ferruginous minerals such as carbonates, silicates, and phosphates, and fine hematite and martite mostly concentrated in the -0.044 mm fraction. Main operations of the processing circuit are removal of slime, flotation to remove impurities (carbonates, phosphates etc.) with an anionic phosphorous collector in an alkaline environment, hematite and martite flotation using same collector in a slightly acidic environment to produce commercial iron concentrate. Tailings of wet magnetic separation of magnetite containing 24.5% Fe and finely disseminated hematite ore containing 51% Fe were processed to produce iron concentrates with a yield of 15% and 50%, respectively, containing approximately 65% Fe and 5% of silica. Hematite flotation tailings had the highest content of gold (up to 0.09 - 0.11 g/t), while in other products it never exceeded 0.02 g/t. Using a Knelson concentrator was able to recover 40 to 45% of the gold into 3.31 g/t Au gravity concentrate. The success of gravity concentration is due to high gravitational contrast of gold to mostly quartz and aluminosilicates in the hematite flotation tailings. In general, the proposed process can be used as a solution to the challenge of selective concentration of finely disseminated iron minerals."

Domestic production of pyrite cinder reached 15.95 million tons in 2006. The pyrite cinder used in cement industry accounts for about 30% production. The remaining 70%, 11.17 million tons, was thrown away as waste, which brought serious environmental and resource problems. A new technology of composite pellet reduction-roasting and magnetic-separation (CPRM) has been developed to utilize pyrite cinder. Pyrite cinder sample, containing 45.56% Fe, 0.19% Cu and 1.45% S, was pelletized with addition of 5% composite agent in balling disc. Green balls after drying were reduced at 700~800 ? for 20min with 300kg/t pulverized coal injection in rotary kiln. After two stages of ball-grinding and four stages of magnetic separation, high grade magnetite concentrate with 66.23% Fe was produced, meanwhile impurities Cu and S was decreased to 0.048% and 0.053%, respectively. And iron recovery of 73.32%, desulphurization of 96.34% and decoppering degree of 74.73% were achieved. Key technique is that composite agent can accelerate reduction of Fe2O3 and transfer copper and sulphur into water-soluble inorganic salts, which can be removed during wet magnetic concentration. This new technology can be used to fully utilize pyrite cinder and produce high quality magnetite concentrates as feed for steel industry, which will help tackle the pollution problem of pyrite cinder and extend iron-bearing raw material sourcing for Chinese steel industry.

In view of the state of the long time use of sodium cyanide in lead-zinc-sulfur-silver multimetallic ore production, we propose alternative reagents system through experimental research. The experiment first used TJ, sodium sulfide to adjust the flotation pulp, after that, zinc sulfate, sodium sulfite was added to low alkaline pulp to inhibiting zinc sulfur mineral and adapted MB, 25# aerofloat and diethyl dithiocarbamate combination collectors to float lead minerals. The obtained test index is as follows: lead concentrate recovery rate of small scale test was increased by 5 to 10%, the recovery rates of gold and silver in lead concentrate were increased by 7% and 11% respectively; the industrial test is conducted under the condition that the total grade of lead and zinc content in raw ore decreased by 4.81%, the total recovery rate of lead and zinc increased by 7%, recovery rates of gold and silver in lead concentrate were increased by 7.62% and 9.65% respectively. So it successfully realizes the target to replace the sodium cyanide, using low-alkaline non-toxic reagents system in mineral processing practice of three kinds of complex lead-zinc-sulfur ore of this mine. The status of utilization of copper ore resources, and the application and development of biohydrometallury technology in the world is reviewed. Based on the characterization of Zambia?s copper resources, biohydrometallurgy technology is shown to be a practical approach to extract and utilize the enormous low grade copper resource, such as ore tailings and low grade copper ore in this country. Through the cooperation of CSU, China and MMMD, Zambia, ?CNMC-CSU Demonstration Base of Biohydrometallurgy Technology in Zambia? was launched and several biohydrometallurgy plants are being constructed. This indicates that the biohdyrometallurgy technology would be applied soon in Zambia and in the whole Africa. Biohydrometallurgy technology stands as an efficient alternative to the traditional pyrometallurgy process and it can be the key to unlock mineral resources value. Fengning ilmenite ore is a magnetic deposit in gabbro containing high phosphorus and low titanium, the main minerals in which are ilmenite, magnetite and apatite. The dissemination size of magnetite is so fine that even the percentage of -0.010mm level is up to 36.50%. The fine and vein magnetite are distributed in gangue and ilmenite, so the majority of the magnetite is difficult to be separated from the gangue. Ilmenite is difficult to be recovered by low-intensity magnetic separation even through fine grinding. In high-intensity magnetic separation of ilmenite, the gangue inter-growth with the magnetite and the Fe-containing silicates may be enriched in the concentrate, and the ilmenite of the concentrate will be reduced. Based on the processing mineralogy research, combined gravity-flotation process is suggested to recover the ilmenite. The method is also good to reduce phosphorus in the ilmenite concentrate.

"Magotteaux and Anglo Platinum started a co-operation program with the main aim of establishing the optimum milling configuration measured in terms of throughput, fineness and energy consumption.For this purpose, a fully instrumented pilot milling plant, supplied by Magotteaux (Pty) Ltd, and equipped with a 0.9 x 1.0 m ball mill, was erected at Frank concentrator (Merensky Pt ore). The primary ball mills at Frank concentrator were surveyed in order to set the conditions for the base case. This data was then replicated in the pilot mill under the same configuration. Thereafter, a series of different parameters were varied in order to attempt to optimize the milling system.Some of the grinding parameters that have been studied are:•,Gate versus overflow discharge•,Open versus closed circuit•,Different filling degrees•,Different shell liner profilesOnly grate versus overflow discharge and open versus closed circuit will be discussed in this paper.It should be noted that this paper does not attempt to give a universal solution as to what milling configuration is optimum in all cases. The conclusions apply for this particular case and probably most others, but it would be advisable to consider each case on its own."

The mineral suspensions do not present a newtonian behavior as their continuous phase; they can be pseudoplastic, dilatant, or both. The viscosity becomes as the most important rheological variable because the different industrial processes involve a wide variety of rheological scenes, with a specific rheological behavior for each one. Some authors have tried to model the viscosity of suspensions considering the volumetric fraction of solids and others have also kept in mind the size of the particles (Einstein, 1906; Batchelor, 1977; Jinescu, 1974; Krieger and Dougherty, 1959; Tangsathitkulchai and Austin, 1988). Others consider the shear rate (Cross, 1965; Hershel-Bulckley, 1926; Bingham, 1916, etc). However, none of the models is able to simulate the viscosity involving the physical, chemical and mechanic factors at the same time for crowded suspensions. A new model based on Neural Networks is presented, taking into account all the variables of ceramic clay suspensions and chemical additives. This paper describes the investigative studies carried out at Vale´s Center of Mineral Development (CDM) for a nickel sulfide deposit aiming to develop an adequate flotation flowsheet. The CDM facilities comprises of very well equipped laboratories to develop hydrometallurgical, comminution, flotation, physical separation processes, besides chemical and mineralogical laboratories, that are required to accomplish pre-feasibility studies, new process routes developments and, eventually, brownfield projects. Close association of the flotation group with the geometallurgy and the mineralogy teams play a key role during greenfield project development. Most of the information required by process engineers responsible for the flowsheet development can be provided by the mineralogy team and its mineralogical laboratory at CDM. During the flowsheet development of this nickel sulfide deposit, two ore types were identified as the most abundant in the deposit, named biotite-chlorite hydrothermalite (HID) and magnetite hydrothermalite (MAG HID). Six samples were selected for the investigative studies based on this initial information. Nickel grade varied from 0.39% to 1.95%. The main nickel-bearing minerals were millerite and pentlandite whereas the main non-sulphide gangue minerals were quartz, plagioclase, biotite, chlorite, actinolite, and/or magnetite. Electron microprobe (EMP) identified the presence of nickel in solid solution in gangue minerals such as biotite, chlorite, and actinolite. Nickel deportment in silicates varied from 3% to almost 40%. Magnesium was distributed in biotite and chlorite, except in sample MAG HID, in which talc was responsible for almost 50% of the Mg content. Liberation studies indicated that the optimum feed grind size was around 150µm and that pyrite occurred highly associated to the nickel sulfides. The flotation tests were planned based on the information provided by the mineralogical data. Rougher flotation tests indicated that the optimum P80 of the primary grind was 212µm for the HID type and 150µm for the MAG HID. From the reagents tested, amyl xanthate proved to be the most efficient in the recovery of the sulfides. In the MAG HID sample talc was well depressed by dosing 600g/t of CMC. Nickel recoveries in the rougher stage were lower than 90% due to the nickel distributed in silicates. However, sulfur recovery was around 95%, indicating high recovery of the total sulfides. Open circuit and locked cycle tests were conducted to evaluate the effect of the regrind size in the nickel grade and recovery (P80 of 44µm and 20µm). Nickel recovery decreased from 70% to 65% when finer regrind size was tested. Although nickel recovery decreased by 5%, the finer regrind size lead to a higher Ni grade (from 11% to 23%Ni) and lower fluorine grade (from 1138ppm to 700ppm) in the concentrate. Coal is the most widely used fossil fuel in the world, providing more than 25% of world?s electrical power. Since, the behavior of coal particles in crushing and grinding circuits, concentration operations, and solid-liquid separations is strongly dependent on size, a reliable and accurate measurement of particle size and particle size distribution (PSD) is a vital aspect in coal cleaning. This paper presents a method for the characterization of ground coal particles using image analysis. We utilized a machine vision (MV) approach that used a document scanner as the imaging device and a user-coded ImageJ plug-in that processed the image and automated the PSD analysis and output results in textual and graphical forms. This approach used a sum of volumes (SVolume) as weighting factor for particle length as the primary dimension of analysis and was successfully applied to ground coal. The plug-in was further improved for computational performance in this study. Mechanical sieving (MS) was also used to compare the MV results. MV results showed that the PSD of ground coal followed a uni-modal normal distribution, and the log-normal plot against particle size exhibited a linear trend for most of the range. MS results, however, had three linear segments, when the width-based sieving results were transformed to lengths by applying the shape factor (width/length), but a definite deviation between the PSD plots was observed. This study demonstrates successful application of the MV SVolume approach for PSD analysis of ground coal, which can be extended to similar particulate minerals and products. Chromium ore exploitation has commenced in 1948 in Albania and there are produced about 24.3 million tons up to the end of 2006. Last years the prices and need were increased notably. Main export of chromium ores and concentrates was accomplished respectively 114 500 ton and 13 000 ton in People Republic of China during 2006 year. Location, status, reserves and grade of chromium deposits of Albania are presented in the paper. Chromium ore enrichment is related with their composition and Cr2O3 content, as well as with market requests. Actually, high grade chromium ores with Cr2O3 content over 38% ~ 40% are directly exported or treated in metallurgy, but last time have been exported and chromium ores with 28% ~ 30% Cr2O3 content for the reason that dressing plants can not be operated for investment lack. High grade chromium ores have been treated in heavy media separation plant before 1990. It is presented flow sheet, figures and necessity to put in operation HMS plant in the paper. Actually, low grade chromium ores with content 16% ~ 20% Cr2O3 are not enriched for the lack of investments, but before 1990 they have been concentrated in dressing plants producing chromium concentrates grade 48% ~ 50% Cr2O3. In the paper are shown technological schemes and industrial figures during more than 20 years operation and possibilities to reconstruct these mineral processing plants. Only chromium mineral processing plant of Bulqiza is in operation using as raw material its old existing tailings. The flow sheet and figures show that are possibilities to increase recovery and grade of concentrate in the plant. Separation and concentration of slimes in suitable equipment gives visible improvement of Cr2O3 recovery. Several tests have been carried out with flotation and magnetic separation methods for enrichment of low grade chromium ores. Flow sheet and figures of mineral processing ores content olivine as gangue mineral are interesting, because combination of gravimetric with magnetic methods is necessary in this case. In the paper are presented the tests and good results of low chromium ore pre concentration. Metallurgical treatment of chromium ores to produce Ferro chrome, as well as technological process, figures, consume of electrical power and materials in Elbasani and Burreli furnaces are shown and necessary investments to treat in metallurgy all produced chromium ores in Albania are considered.

Explores the characters of the valleriite?s surface, studys on the flow-sheet of flotat valleriite and copper-sulphur separated. In the region of the North-Bohemian Coal Basin and its environment, there, in a row of places, are found the accumulations of rocks of the sedimentary and pyro clastic origin, the preliminary composition of those shows the possibility of their being utilized for the production of ecologically sparing natural Fe- and Ti- pigments and filling substances. In many places of the regions of Chomutov and Podborany and near Bilina and also in other places, there are found raw stocks perspective for the preparation of yellow up to ochre-brown, red, brown-red and green dyes. The target of project is the verification of dispensable reserves, their mineralogical composition and chemical and physical attributes, verification of treatment ways of Fe-and Ti-pigments separation (hydrocyclones, magnetic and electrostatic separation) and their stabilization and technological painting attributes for applications in colors, coating and plastic masses, mortar mixtures etc.
