According to geochemical specialization, cobalt-manganese crusts (CMC) of the Magellan Seamounts are rich in cobalt and manganese and are complex in composition. Besides cobalt, manganese, and nickel, they contain such components, as platinum, copper, molybdenum, and rare earth elements, which enhance the value of this material. Factors and conditions responsible for Co-Mn ore-genesis and processes of cobalt-manganese crust formation are described in a number of Russian and foreign geological papers. The study of ore-concentrating processes in the Magellan Seamounts helped to solve an important applied problem, namely to reduce the time needed to reveal the factors of CMC formation mechanism. The authors of this research found seawater over the described area of Magellan Seamounts to be stratified and to contain high concentrations of manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel, copper, lead, and zinc. Diagrams of suspended Co, Mn, Ni, and other components in seawater (0-5500 m), as well as medium concentrations of basic elements (Co, Mn, and Ni) in ore deposits of metallogenic levels of Magellan Seamounts, were found to coincide both on guyots and abyssal plains. Detailed geological study of guyots in the Magellan Seamounts (Dalmorgeo, IOAN, Roskomnedra, and others) revealed that medium Co-Mn crusts cover bedrock rocks in narrow ribbon-like bodies along the edges of bathymetric intervals 1300-1600 m, 1400-2000 m, 2000-2500 m, and 2500-3000 m.

From July 29 to September 15, 2004, the 178th cruise of the R/V Sonne took place under the KOMEX program in the Sea of Okhotsk. One of the cruise objectives was to dredge two different kinds of seamounts: 1 ? underwater volcanoes from the north slope of the Kurile Basin; 2 ? a seamount formed by tectonic (non volcanic) processes from the Kashevarov Trough. The underwater volcanoes are young edifices (0.84 ± 06 Ma, Baranov et al., 2002) with heights ranging from 150 to 300 m. Tops of the volcanoes are located at depth of 1260 to 2340 meters. The volcanic edifices are formed by olivine-clinopyroxene-plagioclase basalts. Dredge samples are covered by Fe-Mn crusts up to 40 mm thick. The seamount from the Kashevarov Trough is a tilted block. The height of the seamount is about 400 m and its top is located at a depth of 960 meters. Biotite hornfels, conglomerates, granodiorites, dropstones, and Fe-Mn crusts were recovered there. The thicknesses of crusts are up to 150 mm. Fe-Mn crusts from the underwater volcanoes differ from Fe-Mn crusts from the Kasevarov Trough seamount in morphology as well as in mineralogical and chemical compositions. The 21-year long-term Japan-SOPAC Cooperative Deep-sea Mineral Resources Study Programme was completed in March 2006. The Programme, which commenced in 1985, has seen numerous marine research surveys being conducted within the Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs) of 12 SOPAC member countries (Figure 1). The various research and government institutions that have been closely involved in this longstanding Programme include: the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA); Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC) (formerly, the Metal Mining Agency of Japan, MMAJ) and relevant ministries of the participating Pacific Island governments.

During the last ten years seven applications for nodule-bearing areas of the World Ocean Floor International Region (IR) have been made by national companies of Russia (Yuzhmorgeologiya), France (IFREMER/AFERNOD), Japan (DORD), India (The State Department of Sea Resources Development), China (COMRA), Korea (KORDI) and the Interokeanmetal Joint Organization (IOM) of some East European countries and have been registered by the Preparatory Commission of the United Nations International Seabed Authority (ISA). Besides these groups registered within Resolution 11 of the Final Act of the III United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea there are four international consortia registered in the USA [Kennecott (KCON), Ocean Mining Associates (DMA), Ocean Management Incorporated (OMI), and Ocean Minerals Company (OMCO)], which have interest in areas in the IR and can be considered as potential applicants. All registered areas (with the exception of the Indian Ocean) including the areas of potential applicants and also 6 areas, reserved for the ISA are located in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone of the Pacific Ocean. If within each area not less than one deposit of polymetallic nodule-bearing ores can be discovered, then, the total number of such deposits, for the present moment, is 20.

Nautilus Minerals is the world leader in exploration and development of deep ocean seafloor massive sulphide (SMS) resources. The company is currently focused on generating its resource pipeline in the Western Pacific and its first development project for recovery of high-grade copper, gold and silver mineralisation from its Solwara 1 site in the Bismarck Sea, Papua New Guinea. The Solwara 1 site is located at a water depth of 1,600 ? 1,800 meters. Over 150 SMS seafloor surface samples have been collected from chimney structures during dives made by remote operated vehicles (ROVs). In order to obtain an understanding of the sub-surface mineralisation, Nautilus carried out 4 drilling programs between 2006 and 2010 which allowed the calculation of a Canadian NI43-101 compliant resource estimate. The initial 2006 campaign was based on conventional offshore surface driven drill equipment. In conjunction with the subsea remote technology industry, Nautilus subsequently developed an ROV operated seafloor drill system with improved drill core recovery and efficiency. This technology was developed further with a 2010 - 2011 drill program to increase the available geological knowledge at Solwara 1 and adjacent prospects. his paper will provide an overview of Nautilus? SMS drilling requirements and recap the evolution of drilling technology and operations undertaken at Solwara 1 from 2006 to 2011. The paper will also discuss the potential of further developments in drilling techniques and equipment to increase or improve drilling depth, efficiency and data quality.

The Marine Operations and Engineering section of the British Geological Survey based in Edinburgh, Scotland have, over the last 30 years, developed and operate a series of remotely operated, and powered, seabed coring systems. These systems were initially developed to provide a cost-effective solution to ground truth seismic reflection data for regional geological mapping, where the only solution that existed was conventional and expensive drill-ships. Since the early 1990?s these tools have been used for many other applications in industry and science. Currently the systems can operate in up to 2000 m water depth for 5m seabed penetration and up to 4500m water depth for a specialised oriented core drill which collects a scribed core to 0.8m below seabed. Scientific applications focus on determining the geology of an area and follows pre-determined geophysical interpretations. It usually also follows other coring attempts with non-powered coring equipment which is invariably unsuccessful if the strata is over-consolidated sediments or hard rock. Commercial applications include cable and pipeline route surveys, diamond, gold and base metal exploration, beach reclamation and aggregate materials evaluation. In many cases there is a blend of science and commercial investigation typified by coring in hydrothermal vent areas or carrying out geological coring in a frontier oilfield province. The versatility of the drills allows cost effective and rapid operations in remote and hostile areas where a rapid investigation may be the only one possible in a short weather window. The deepwater operational capability also allows science and commercial assay to be obtained ahead of potential exploitation and allows formulation of scientific theories or commercial project plans based on sound core data. Being mobile and compact these corers may be used from suitable (Dynamically Positioned or Anchored) vessels of convenience and thus provide a cost effective platform for sampling different types of seabed geology on an international basis.

"In July 2016 the International Seabed Authority (the “ISA”) released a first working draft of its mineral exploitation regulations as well as the standard contract terms for mineral resources in the Area, for which stakeholder input was sought in late 2016. In January of 2017 the ISA released a discussion paper on environmental matters related to these draft regulations. The ISA is now in the process of further developing its draft exploitation regulations and standard contract terms to ensure that seabed mining is carried out in an environmentally sound way for the common benefit of mankind.As the regulator of the “Area”, the ISA can draw lessons from onshore mining regulators and offshore petroleum regulators for their experiences in legislative drafting to smoothly and safely oversee project development, implementation, and closure. However, one of the unique challenges that the ISA faces in regulating private industry is its status as an international organization and not a sovereign nation, which results in a significantly different legal relationship between the regulator and the regulated. The result is that the exploitation contract is the sole legal connection between the mining proponent and the regulator for the exploitation phrase of the project.Accordingly, in the regulatory development process, the ISA must carefully consider which rights and obligations are set out in the exploitation contract versus the regulations. This decision will dictate the flexibility the ISA will have to modernize the conduct required of mining proponents in response to changing best practices in the industry, technological progress, and advances in the understanding of the marine ecosystem. As the first working draft of the exploitation regulations sets out an initial contract period of twenty years, it is crucial for the ISA to carefully consider the rights, obligations, and procedures it agrees to in the exploitation contract, as unilateral amendment will not be possible after contract execution."

KIGAM (Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources) has been doing various kinds of research works in marine minerals and energy resources exploration and utilization since early 1990s in Korea. In the presentation, the authors will introduce the recent research and development activities mainly focusing on the rare earth metals of the Pacific deep seabed Mn-nodules and gas hydrates which occur from Korean deep waters. KIGAM has been participating in the polymetallic manganese nodule exploration, mining and metal-extraction project, which is modulated by KIOST (Korea Institute of Ocean Sciences and Technology, formerly KORDI). Now KIGAM puts more focus on extracting precious and rare earth metals from the Mn-nodule as well as underlying sediments. The rare earth elements (REE) from seabed mineral deposits also draw attention to those countries including Korea which are lack in natural resources. KIGAM is doing several kinds of leaching experiments using various kinds of reagents under the different experimental parameters. Extraction of rare earth metals from deep sea nodule using H2SO4 and HCl solution showed good leaching effect. As the gas hydrates are to be evaluated as a new future energy resource globally, Korean government has initiated national R/D program covering fundamental exploration survey for resources assessment in Korean deep waters and production technology development. The Semenov hydrothermal sulfide cluster (13º31´N), consisted of five fields (Semenov-1, -2, -3, -4, and -5), was discovered in 2007 in the 30th cruise of R/V Professor Logatchev [Beltenev et al., 2007; 2009]. The hydrothermal fields are located on a seamount composed of ultramafic and mafic rocks, gabbro, plagiogranite, and their altered rocks. The Semenov cluster is considered to be the largest sulfide accumulation in the Ocean with massive sulfide (MS) resources of about 40 million tons [Beltenev et al., 2009]. MS of the Semenov-1, -3, -4, and -5 hydrothermal fields are mostly characterized by marcasite-pyrite composition whereas rich copper-zinc MS with high Cu and Zn contents (11.37?19.33 and 5.89?18.32%, respectively) and anomalous Au and Ag grades (22?188 ?127?1787 ppm, respectively) were dredged only at the Semenov-2 hydrothermal field associated with basalts (13°31.13´N, 44°59.03´W; 2360?2580 m of depths) [Ivanov et al., 2008].

Ferromanganese crust samples collected from Central Pacific sea-mount areas became of special interest after surprisingly high nobel metal contents have been analyzed. Hydrogenetic crust growth is controlled by the conditions of the oceanic water column. Thicker encrustations show two crust generations of different age ranges. The mean values of the chemical composition state that the older generation is richer in P, Ca, Ni, Cu, Zn, and Pt and depleted in Fe, Ti, Co, Al, and Si. The differences apparently indicate a distinct change of the geochemical environment. The Pt concentrations vary up to 1800 ppb and do not clearly correlate to one of the other metals. This might indicate a bond of multiple nature. Several mechanisms have been proposed to explain the Pt concentrations in ferromanganese samples. Our models consider seawater and cosmic spherules as responsible Pt sources. In seawater the main species of dissolved Pt probably exist as the doubly negatively charged tetrachloro-complex. A precipitation of Pt in seawater may take place if the chloro-complex is decomposed by reduction of pt2+ to pt0. On the other hand, the Mn02 precipitation is caused by an oxidation of Mn2+ which is supplied from the oxygen-minimum zone. The U. S. Bureau of Mines participated in a two-year joint State of Oregon/Department of Interior Placer Task Force study on the economic and environmental aspects of Oregon's marine placer deposits. The effort culminated in a research cruise off the southwest coast of Oregon to investigate the geological and biological characteristics of the continental shelf deposits. The Bureau's role was to collect and study the placer material off the continental shelf and to determine its strategic potential and significance. In-depth characterization of the sediments by optical and electron microscopy verify that the placer material from Cape Blanco contains up to 3 pct ilmenite, 0.5 pct chromite, and small amounts of zircon and gold. However, harsh sea conditions and equipment failures prevented sampling below a four-foot depth at the Cape Blanco site. Results to date indicate that the deposits sampled off the southwest coast of Oregon do not represent a significant source of strategic minerals. However, further study of the deeper sediments off Cape Blanco may uncover significant concentrations of chromite. This presentation encompasses the site geology, the geophysical and biological activities of the expedition, and the results of the Bureau's mineralogical and chemical investigation. The combined findings of the Bureau and other Task Force agencies have provided information needed to expand the country's limited knowledge of marine mineral resources and has assisted state and federal agencies in the formulation of offshore mineral policies.

From December 2004 through March of 2005 an extensive geophysical program was conducted to delineate polymetallic sulfide deposits in the Bismark Sea for a major mining concern. Deeply towed sidescan sonar, interferometric swath bathymetry, subbottom profiling, magnetic gradiometry, electrical resistivity, induced polarization. self-potential, gravimetry, water temperature/conductivity and towed video were among the methodologies tested against known occurrences of polymetallic sulfides in 1500 m -- 2200 m water depths. Known active and currently inactive sulfide areas were characterized using the various remote sensing techniques followed by survey with these same tools in other areas where they successfully discovered new prospects. Dredge sampling was used to ground truth both previously known sulfide areas and newly found deposits.

The particles that make up the deep-sea sediments have two main sources: 1) those that are created in situ from dissolved components and 2) those that are washed into the ocean in solid phases from the continents, atmosphere, space and interior of the Earth. Many particles as they sink through the water column reaches the seabed and are known as pelagic sediments with terrigenous, biogenic, authigenic, and cosmogenic components. Among the minerals found in the terrigenous fraction of pelagic sediments are quartz, clay minerals, feldspar, micas, ferromagnesians, and the biogenic fraction with remains of siliceous organisms, such as, radiolarian and diatoms. The chemical nature of marine sediments is controlled by the contribution of particulate matter derived from various sources with varying compositions for the fixing of elements during deposition and the compositional changes carried out within the sediments during diagenesis. In September 2005 Williamson & Associates, Inc. delivered the BMS2 remotely operated seafloor coring system to the Japan Oil, Gas & Minerals National Corporation (JOGMEC). During acceptance trials aboard the JOGMEC research vessel R/V Hakurei Maru No. 2 the BMS2 successfully recovered 7.44 m of rock core in 3377 m water at a site near the crest of a seamount about 500 nm SE of Japan. Hydrogenous ferromanganese oxide crust, basaltic lava, sandstone and volcanic sediments were sampled with near 100% core recovery. The BMS uses rotary rod coring tools to collect samples to a maximum depth of 30 m in water depths up to 6000 m. Depending on bottom type to be sampled, the BMS tool magazine can be loaded with various drilling tools including core barrels with different bit types, drill rod and bore hole casing. The drill has 9 video cameras, a suite of sensors and 60 hydraulic functions powering thrusters, telescoping legs, seawater pumps and all of the standard drilling controls. The BMS provides deep water investigations with the functionality of conventional diamond bit rod drilling currently the mainstay of exploration programs in land mining.

Since 2013, GSR has undertaken 4 exploration campaigns, which focused on environmental baseline monitoring (marine biology), resource definition and technological change. The seabed nodule collection vehicle has a significant influence on the achievable production rate and is for that reason thought to be a serious risk in developing an economical viable mining operation. GSR is currently working on a pre-prototype of a seabed nodule collection vehicle. The program, called ProCat, started in 2015 and will take up to end of 2019. ProCat can be split up in 2 phases: ‐ ProCat#1 [2015 – Q2 2017]: separate parallel testing of the nodule collection- and driving mechanism (Tracked Soil Testing Device Patania I – TSTD Patania I). The trafficability was tested in-situ; the collection mechanism was tested in a laboratory. Phase 1 has been completed successfully in September 2017. ‐ ProCat#2 [Q3 2017 – end of 2019]: the knowledge acquired during the first phase was used in this 2nd phase. Both collection mechanism and driving mechanism were integrated into the design of a pre-prototype seabed nodule collection vehicle (Pre-Prototype Vehicle Patania II – PPV Patania II). This pre-prototype vehicle will be used for a simulated mining test in Q2 of 2019 in the GSR- and BGR license area. The main objective of the ProCat research program, and especially the 2nd phase, is to integrate the nodule collector on the tracked chassis and develop an operating vehicle causing minimal environmental impact hereby validating the requirements for a full scale polymetallic nodule collection vehicle in the actual operational environment of the CCFZ. Following the ProCat project, GSR is working towards a system-integrated mining test once exploitation regulations have been agreed by the ISA and its member States.

In the last two years, C-CORE has developed a new seabed sampler directed specifically at obtaining samples from hard or compacted bottoms such as are typical of marine placer deposits. Samples are required for appraisal of concentrations of saleable commodities, and for determination of levels of biological indicators in the deposits. Recently C-CORE and the University of Victoria have been comparing the performance of the Scott/C-CORE sampler with that of the Van Veen sampler often used for biological sampling. Initial trials of the Scott/C-CORE sampler in 1992 at the WestGold mining site, Nome, Alaska, were described by Jewitt et al. at the 1993 UMI. Since that time the sampler has been modified to prevent overfilling, and to limit turbulent flow of water across the top of the sampler buckets when the sampler is recovered with partly-open buckets. The modifications included shoes to prevent sampler overfill, and flexible rubber shielding over top and sides of the sampler to prevent water circulation. Samples have been taken with both samplers in two field areas, one at Pine Cove, Baie Verte, Newfoundland, and the other near Long Pond in Conception Bay on the Avalon Peninsula, Newfoundland. In each area multiple samples were taken with both sampler types, and the samples processed immediately to establish the types and quantities of marine organisms that were present. Species identification is expected to be complete by late August.
