"While the design of a control strategy depends on the available process knowledge, its implementation depends on the available process information. On-line chemical analyzers are today widely spread in the mineral processing industry. A real-time concentration measurement of chemical components is valuable information that could bring control strategies to whole new levels. However, the use of these measures rarely reaches anything more than process monitoring. The reason is simple: the on-line chemical measurements quality is most of the time insufficient to be directly included in control strategies. The choice is then made to let the critical eye of the engineer or the operator appreciates the measurements before making any decision based on it.Data reconciliation through mass balance is a technique today widely used in the mineral processing industry to increase the accuracy and the reliability of plant data, mainly for accounting and survey analysis purposes. Real-time data reconciliation of on-line measurements appears as a natural coupling of technologies that could bring new process optimization trends. Once overcome the technical difficulties, full valorization of the instrumentation investment could be reached.This paper presents the application of real-time data reconciliation for process control and performance monitoring. It proposes a general approach, discusses challenges and illustrates concepts with industry experiences."

"Shebandowan is about 600 miles west of Sudbury and 50 miles west of Thunderbay close to the trans Canada highway. Shebandowan Lake is about 38 miles long. The ore body is located between No. 1 and No. 2 shafts at the lower end of the lake. The economic mineralization lies between 200 and 2000 feet below. Years ago development of this ore body would probably have entailed draining the lake and using the open pit method to mine the ore.The water of Gold Creek which flows into Lake Shebandowan is representative of all local waters and is very close to rain water in purity. It is obvious that any industrial water discharged would have a measurable impact on the local water. The dissolved solids content is low and consistent with what is normally found in northern Ontario.A Koepe headframe is the only visible evidence of the mine from the lake. The Koepe headframe is esthetically pleasing and quiet in operation. The structure is of concrete to control noise. Noise from ore dumping is controlled by dumping underground to an ore pocket 400 feet below the surface. A 3600 foot conveyor belt carries the ore underground to the mill and is out of sight of the lake and the cottagers. The main objective to all our environmental efforts has been to preserve the natural beauty of the region. The mill is housed in a conventional metal-clad-siding building painted in esthetically pleasing colours. A single service building houses warehouse, dry storage and offices. The area surrounding the mill and service building is paved or grassed and drainage from this area is collected and pumped to the tailings area. Air intake silencers are installed on the compressors which are mounted at the back of the mill. Sound measurements taken on the lake indicate that noise suppression is excellent."

Tooth-wear on mining shovels requires continuous monitoring. Worn teeth impede excavation performance, increase energy usage, and increase the risk of lost or broken teeth and adapters. A machine-vision-based automated tooth-wear monitoring system is presented. The system employs a rugged boom or stick-mounted camera to capture images of the shovel teeth. An onboard computer processes the images in real-time to determine the length of each tooth. The current wear state is available via a network-accessible log for on-demand status updates. By continuously recording tooth length changes over time, the logs can be used to estimate wear rates and patterns, permitting comparisons between different G.E.T. configurations, operator behaviour patterns, or material types. This detailed, quantitative data permits site-specific optimizations to wear packages and maintenance scheduling. Automating wear monitoring offers the crucial wear information necessary to minimize maintenance costs and reduce unscheduled downtime. A 37-day field trial in a copper-gold mine demonstrated the ability of the system to measure tooth lengths, compute wear rates, and detect differences in tooth wear based on their position on the bucket.

Silver and gold happened to occur, although in small amounts, in those countries where the early civilizations developed. Their persistent brightness certainly amazed the primitive people, who also found it easy to shape them into ornaments •and implements. Ever since then their properties have made them seem desirable possessions.Use of precious metals as money was the natural consequence of man's desire for them. The possibility of changing an ornament into a tool or food at any time, and the ease with which such medium of exchange could be carried and hidden, further increased the demand for the two metals.Silver was probably discovered after gold and copper, and was undoubtedly found by prehistoric man as native silver. The oldest silver articles have been discovered in Chaldean tombs and date back to 5000 B.C. The earliest ascertained producers of silver were Asia Minor and the Iberian Peninsula. The Romans worked deposits in Spain, Britain, and France. In the Middle Ages, some silver was extracted from German deposits, and near the end of the Middle Ages systematic workings were carried on at Freiberg, Schneeberg, and Joachimsthal (1).Before the discovery of the New Continent, the Aztecs and Toltecs in Mexico, and the Incas in Peru, had made extensive use of silver. In the 16th century the Mexican deposits became the largest source of the world silver."

"Grinding is simply the function of reducing particles in size or creating new surface areas. This may be accomplished by many means but we will only concern ourselves with the continuous grinding process as performed in a revolving drum or mill, containing a grinding media. Such a mill consists essentially of a feed head, a cylindrical shell section and a discharge head. To prevent internal wear of these parts it is customary to attach replaceable linings over the wear areas. The specification and design of these mill liners is more important than generally conceded. As they reduce the effective internal volume of the mill, they will consequently affect the whole mill ·design and operation.A number of mill designs of various sizes are available for combined crushing and grinding of materials within a wide size range. For simplif1cahon purposes we will refer 1n particular to conditions relating to standard mill shapes having a length which is greater than the diameter. Such mills usually rotate at speeds between 60% to 85% of the critical speed and may, depending on the grinding media used, be classified as rod mills, ball mills and pebble mills.LINER MATERIALSA great variety of materials have been and are being used for mill linings. These include wood, ceramics and cements, rubber and plastic compounds, rolled and forged steels, cast steels and cast irons, both plain, alloyed and specially treated.The choice of a liner material depends on many factors. "Permanent magnets have been applied extensively to several electronic products such as printers, TV sets, microphones, microcomputers and headphones, presently manufactured in large scale by industrial economies. Sm-Co alloys represent about 20% of the world market for permanent magnets and their industrial processors generate 20-30% of magnetic scraps which can be recycled. This paper discusses a process route to recycle SmCo5 using acid treatment, solvent extraction of Sm and electrowinning of Co. The results confirm the feasibility of the alternative proposed. Basic operational variables are suggested as guidelines to design a plant for recycling magnetic scraps.The use of hydrometallurgical processes to recycle scraps from the industry of permanent magnets has been suggested in some recent papers related to recycling of metallic alloys [ 1 ]. These research efforts might be understood as a worldwide tendency towards the development of self sustainable metallurgical processes which mean the reduction of environmental impacts.CETEM -Center for Mineral Technology leads in Brazil several research programs concerning recycling and treatment of industrial residues. The work on samarium purification and concentration by solvent extraction, producing also a solution of cobalt sulfate as partially reported here is one of these programs. For decades, the mining industry has been focussed to find an efficient and economically attractive process for the leaching of chalcopyrite. Jetti Resources has developed a novel hydrometallurgical alternative to extract metals of value from mineral ores that the mining industry has struggled to process. Jetti’s catalytic technology, whilst being especially advantaged for extracting copper from low-grade and highly refractory minerals, such as chalcopyrite, seamlessly integrates with existing heap leaching methods and downstream processing operations. The technology uses a catalyst which weakens the metal-sulfide bond in the crystalline structure of the chalcopyrite mineral and alters the structure of the passivation layer allowing the leaching process to continue. Metallurgical test work was conducted to examine the effect of ore variability, in terms of grade and copper deportment. The results presented in this study highlight the amenability of the technology and demonstrate that it is possible to enhance leaching performance of copper primary sulfides over a wide range of copper grades, from 0.1 to 2.2%. Further, it is concluded that despite the copper grade, the tests with increasing chalcopyrite content render copper recoveries up to 4 times higher compared to the tests under non-catalyzed conditions. Jetti’s catalytic technology is currently being evaluated at larger scales, namely a commercial dump leach operation and 50-tonne crib tests. The results obtained thus far are compared to the results from conventional sulfide heap leaching tests. Chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) is the most abundant and recalcitrant of the copper sulfides (Singer, 2017). Owing to its abundance and economic importance, it is the most demandable natural source for copper worldwide. In fact, the projected demand for copper is further expected to rise much higher beyond the current demand by the year 2020 (Panda et al., 2015). Therefore, it becomes imperative to find low intensity hydrometallurgical technologies for the extraction of copper from chalcopyrite in ores of such low-grades that are un-economic to concentrate and to augment the supply by extracting copper from ores with complex mineralogy that cannot be concentrated (Watling, 2013).

The effects of the slagging components Al2O3, CaO and MgO on the thermodynamics and phase equilibria of the gas/slag/matte system with major elements “Cu2O”-“FeO”-SiO2-S are characterised using an integrated experimental and thermodynamic modelling approach. The experimental technique included high-temperature equilibration experiments using a spinel substrate in controlled gas atmosphere (CO/CO2/SO2/Ar), quenching of the sample and subsequent measurement of the compositions of equilibrium phases with Electron Probe X-ray Microanalysis (EPMA). Thermodynamic modelling is undertaken using the computer system FactSage. In previous experimental studies on this system, the separate effects of Al2O3, CaO and MgO were determined. In the present investigation, the combined effects of these additional components are investigated at 1200oC and P(SO2) = 0.25 atm and a range of P(O2)’s. Special attention is paid to ensuring chemical equilibrium is achieved in each case, for this reason possible kinetic factors are systematically analysed. The results obtained are presented in the form of graphs showing the compositions of matte and slag phases as functions of copper concentration (matte grade). The new experimental data are used for the improvement of the thermodynamic database for multicomponent copper-containing systems. The effects of the slagging elements on this multicomponent system will be presented in the paper. INTRODUCTION Whilst Fe-O-Si form the principal components of copper smelting and refining slags, additional impurities are present in industrial practice typically at 2–5 wt.% Al2O3, 1–4 wt.% CaO and 1–2 wt.% MgO levels (Davenport, King, Schlesinger, & Biswas, 2002). These elements are introduced into the slag as impurities in concentrates and other feedstocks, in fluxes added to the process and in refractory materials. Understanding, and accurate description, of the changes that take place in the smelting process in the presence of these additional elements is of major importance to the optimization of industrial operations. Although experimental data are available on slag/copper matte equilibria, further work is needed to accurately characterise the influence of Al2O3, CaO and MgO on phase equilibria and elemental distributions of elements in gas/slag/matte systems. The individual effects of the Al2O3, CaO and MgO slagging components on equilibrium phase assemblages under selected conditions have been quantified in a recent series of studies on the Cu–Fe–O–S–Si-(Al, Ca, Mg) gas-slag-matte-metal system (Fallah- Mehrjardi, Hayes, & Jak, 2018; Fallah-Mehrjardi, Hidayat, Hayes, & Jak, 2017a, 2017b; Hidayat, Fallah-Mehrjardi, Hayes, & Jak, 2018a, 2018b; Jak et al., 2016; D. Shishin, Decterov, & Jak, 2018; Denis Shishin, Hayes, & Jak, 2018). Since, thermodynamically, the condensed phases do not behave ideally, it is to be expected that the effects of individual elements may not be additive, and the additional interactions between the Al2O3, CaO and MgO slagging components will also have to be taken into account. These additional effects are expected to be smaller than those of the individual components, so higher accuracy is needed. The present paper describes analysis of the precision and accuracy of the experimental technique on multi-component, multi-phase equilibria in these systems to enable the combined effects of Al2O3 + CaO + MgO on slag/matte/spinel equilibria, i.e. for high Fe/SiO2, to be accurately measured. The effects of Al2O3, CaO and MgO on the gas - slag - matte are analysed using a thermodynamic modelling approach with the computer package FactSage.

The Yayoi period, from about 300 B.C. to A.O. 300, represents a time of important changes in Japanese history. During this period the advanced rice culture of the Asian continent was introduced to Japan, along with the techniques of animal husbandry, spinning, bronze casting and metal working(1) . As was the case in the Jomon period (11000 B.C. to 300 B.C.), the Yayoi period is traditionally defined by a particular type of pottery, characterized by the use of the potter's wheel and an extreme simplicity of decoration and form(2) . Pieces of this pottery were found in 1884 in a district of Tokyo, known as Yayoi-Cho, not far from Tokyo University. Within a decade the name Yayoi had come to be used for the period which also saw the first casting of metals in Japan121. During the Yayoi period, the foundation of the ancient Japanese state was laid as the individual small communities were unified and as labour specialization and social levels developed. In fact, the Yayoi may be the true ancestral culture of Japan(3) . However, the origin of the Yayoi is not definitely known. One theory indicates that the Yayoi people may have been driven from the Asian mainland (via Korea) by the dynastic wars that accompanied the unification of China under the Ch'in and Han and that these settlers rapidly displaced the Jomon. Bronze objects and the cultivation of rice may have arrived about the same time - in the third century B.C. Iron was in Japan within another century, but since it rusts badly and disintegrates, only a few small pieces are known from such an early date(4) . After about 50 B.C., the Yayoi cultures of western Japan were in fairly close and regular contact with the continent via Korea(5)

"The purpose of this paper is to introduce to the minerals processing marketplace a viable alternative to conventional mechanical agitation and pachuca airlift agitation. What follows is a brief introduction to the Atara Corporation and the fundamentals of how an Atara ""cannon"" mixer operates. The main body of the paper is concerned with the results of a study to evaluate the cannon mixer for a gold cvanide leach application. A brief summary of research and testing for other metallurgical applications is also presented.1. 1 THE COMPANYThe Atara Corporation is a privately owned Canadian company, headquarted in Dorval, Quebec. Its subsidiary, Atara Incorporated, located in Paramus, New Jersey services the municipal wastewater treatment market in the United States. Dorval focuses on industrial mixing applications in Canada and the US. The Atara Corporation provides design, engineering and specifications of agitators for mineral land other) processing applications. Fabrication of mixers is pursued in either Canada or the US, depending on the ultimate destination.Although Atara and its unique static in-tank mixer are relative newcomers to the mining industry, the cannon mixer has demonstrated its value over the past 20 years in municipal wastewater treatment services. In the past four years the Atara unit has been developed for industrial applications; the bulk of the development work has been for metallurgical applications. To-date the cannon mixer has been evaluated for mixing slurries in the following applications: nickel-copper concentrate storage, copper concentrate storage, coal slurry storage, gold cyanide leaching, uranium acid leaching, silver leaching and zinc acid leaching. "This paper reviews the chemistry involved in the recovery of gold from cyanide solution with anion-exchange resins, and also discusses the most critical aspects of the engineering of an effective resin-in-pulp (RIP) process. As far as the chemistry is concerned, the conclusions reached by a great many researchers, as well as the performance of the only operating RIP plant in the Western World, at the Golden Jubilee Mine in South Africa, support the view that the process is technically viable and, in many cases, could prove to be more attractive economically than alternative processes such as zinc cementation and carbon-in-pulp (CIP). On the engineering side, there is still a need for further development before larger scale ( > 50,000 tpm) RIP plants can be designed, built and operated with confidence. However, the experiences gained during nearly 3 years of operation of the Golden Jublee RIP plant indicate that the process can be engineered with confidence for smaller operations ( < 50,000 tpm), and this will probably be the scope of application of the first-generation RIP plants. INTRODUCTIONThe use of anion-exchange resins in gold processing has, for a number of years, been proposed as an alternative to more conventional processes such as zinc cementation and carbon adsorption, and detailed research programs that have been carried out at a number of laboratories have demonstrated the technical viability of the process. "This paper describes the use of dynamic scheduling and discrete event control to provide coordinated control of multiple automated vehicles. This work has been carried out within ongoing research into multi-robot coordination developed around the underground mining scenario. Demonstrations using scaled laboratory models of underground mines illustrate the potential for this technology for full-scale implementation for mine-wide automation. IntroductionIn the past decade, the mining industry has been improving the efficiency of underground mining operations. Robotics and automation have demonstrated the potential to further reduce costs. Tele-operation of underground vehicles from above ground and autonomous navigation have reduced travel delays and allowed for single operator control of multiple vehicles (Bloomquist and Hinton, 2001). Other recent projects include the automation of the digging process as well as the drilling and blasting operations. Infrastructureless guidance systems are also being developed (Bloomquist and Hinton, 2001).Mine-wide automation requires significant developments at two levels: (1) the development of mining robots capable of performing tasks either autonomously or semiautonomously; and (2) the development of methods for automating operations at a systems level. This paper focusses on the latter, and describes a general framework for the coordination of multiple mobile robots in an unstructured or semi-structured environment."

"The first known use of activated carbon dates back to the Ancient Egyptians who utilized its adsorbent properties for purifying oils and medicinal purposes. Centuries later, the early ocean going vessels stored drinking water in wooden barrels, the inside of which had been charred. (However, by modern definition the carbon used in these applications could not truly be described as activated.) By the early 19th century, both wood and bone charcoal was in large scale use for the decolorization and purification of cane sugar.However, it was not until the beginning of the First World War that the potential of activated carbon was really capitalized upon. The advent of gas warfare necessitated the development of suitable respiratory devices for personnel protection. Granular activated carbon was used to this end as, indeed, it still is today.By the late 1930's there was considerable industrial scale use of carbon for both gaseous and liquid phase application and new manufacturing processes had been developed to satisfy the needs of industry. During the 1939-1945 war, a further significant development took place - the production of more sophisticated chemically impregnated carbon for the removal of both war and nerve gases."

"Effective control of metallurgy by manual adjustment of cell levels is common flotation practice. With an on-stream XRF analyzer interfaced to a process control computer it is possible to program the computer to carry out this function automatically. This paper describes the development and implementation of closed loop control of the concentrate and tailing grades at the Clarabelle Mill of the International Nickel Company of Canada, Limited, The XRF analyzer was used as the sensor, cell level as the control and the computer as the controller.IntroductionThe International Nickel Company of Canada, Limited recently brought on-stream Clarabelle Mill having a rated capacity of 35,000 tons per day. The plant was required to increase milling capacity in the Sudbury area by 9,000 tons per day and to improve milling efficiencies by replacing the obsolete crushing and grinding equipment at the Copper Cliff Mill. This represents the fourth mill built since 1959 and incorporates the latest thinking in a continuing evolution of instrumentation and control concepts. Table 1 illustrates control progress at Inco since 1959.In 1967 Frood-Stobie Mill came on-stream incorporating a central control room, an on-stream analyzer, a data gathering computer, and a significant change in instrumentation from direct-contacted pneumatic to miniature electronic. The computer successfully controls the analyzer but has very limited process control capability. Based on this experience a process control computer system was installed at Clarabelle Mill with the objective of carrying out extensive supervisory control and a limited amount of direct digital control."

"The vulnerability of Canadian and U.S. companies, their directors, officers and employees to onerous penalties associated with violations of environmental statutes and common law actions has provided the impetus for the increasing use of environmental audits. This trend is developing in direct proponion to the cost and difficulty of obtaining liability insurance. Companies operating in British Columbia should be cognizant of developing legislative and enforcement trends and their implications for individual and corporate responsibility. Canadian mining companies doing business in the U.S. should be particularly aware of the environmental exposure which may be assumed with property acquisition or by operations which produce or use any of an ever-increasing list of regulated substances.The environmental audit is now a key component of prudent business planning which will identify noncompliances and environmental liabilities, outline defensive strategies, and assist in a legal defence should charges be laid. This paper will discuss the purpose and mechanics of an environmental audit with emphasis on those features which will maximize protection against statutory and common law actions.IntroductionThe environmental audit is but one weapon in a comprehensive defensive strategy for corporate and individual survival in an increasingly litigious world. The principles of the environmental audit have been formulated as a logical response by management to an ever-growing list of environmental vulnerabilities, which often have the potential to result in plant shutdowns, prosecutions or fmancial liability of major proportions. Accordingly, the audit may play a critical role in maintaining profitability as well as assisting in the defence of a company and its employees against actions taken by regulatory agencies and citi7.cns under statute and common law. Should convictions result from these actions, the penalties are likely to be ameliorated by the demonstration of due diligence through management policy supporting the audit procedure.An awareness of environmental sensitivities, strict adherence to licensing requirements, and planning for environmental emergencies are now generally considered to be as important to profitable performance as operating costs, metal prices, and labour peace. Why is this so? The increased priority given to environmental matters is partly a result of changing attitudes amongst the mining profession, but perhaps more importantly, it is also a direct consequence of the proliferation of ever more stringent environmental legislation, the targeting of management for responsibility and the draconian penalties imposed for violations of such legislation. Contributing to this trend are recent court decisions involving disputes of an environmental nature in which the standard of care required for a successful defence now requires almost super-human diligence in environmental management. The principle of ""strict liability"" (in which negligence or permit violation does not have to be shown) is also being increasingly applied in the resolution of civil actions."

The iron ores of the Kiruna mine in Sweden are of exceptional quality except for the phosphorus content in certain zones of the orebody. The prevention of mixing ores high in phosphorus with those low in phosphorus has always been of significant economic importance. The ongoing introduction of tele-mining and automatic haulage by LHDs requires new means in the field of quality control underground, as the experienced miner as well as the underground laboratory assistant no longer are involved in the process. As of 1998, LKAB has been testing prototypes of LIF (laser-induced fluorescence) analyzers for non-contact and real-time measurement of the phosphorus content of ore being transported by LHDs from the stopes to the respective ore pass assigned to a certain ore quality. The principles of the analysis of laser-induced fluorescence, the different test phases and results are described and conclusions made. With bulk sorting of ore underground, the mining engineer supports the efforts of the metallurgist in the processing plant.

"The Williams Mine, Canada's largest gold mine, processes over 6,000 t/d of ore utilizing SAG/ball milling, leaching and CIP, carbon stripping, electrowinning and refining to produce gold dare bullion.Grinding accounts for over 50% of milling costs with grinding media, power and mill liners making up over 75% of grinding costs. Since 1991, several changes in these areas have been made which have significantly reduced costs, while fineness of grind and mill recovery have both been increased.This paper discusses the changes made in the grinding circuit over the past few years and assesses their impact on operating costs and mill operations.IntroductionThe Williams Mine is located in the Hemlo area of northwestern Ontario, about 40 km east of Marathon. It is operated by the Williams Operation Corporation, which is equally owned by Teck Corp. and Homestake Canada Inc. Canada's largest gold mine, the Williams Mine commenced operation in October 1985 at a rate of 3, 000 t/d. Mill throughputs have typically exceeded design, averaging 3, 397 t/d in 1986, and 3,380 t/d in 1987. In August 1988, production was increased to 6,000 t/d. Throughput averaged 4,212 t/d in 1988. Production increased over the next few years averaging 5,477 t/d in 1989, 6,248 t/d in 1990, 5,987 t/d in 1991, and 6,283 t/d in 1992. With a recovery of over 95.5%, production for the first three quarters in 1993 is averaging 6,408 t/d.GeologyThe main ore body is a steeply dipping conformable zone of microcline-quartz-muscovite rock. It occupies the contact zone between hanging wall metasedimentary rocks and foot wall felsic quartz feldspar porpyritic rocks of possible volcanic or subvolcanic intrusive origin. The ore body is enveloped by muscovite schists which are thickest on the footwall side. The schist is enriched with tourmaline, pyrite, and green mica containing vanadium and barium. The ore body contains pyrite and barite which occurs mostly in laminae and bands to veinlets and breccia fillings. The gold occurs as free (native) grains, 20 to 30 µm in size at grain junctions of the microcline and quartz. Visible gold is rare in the main zone. There are commonly two or more discernable layers of economic value which are separated by weakly gold mineralized material which usually consists of muscovite schist, barite rich zones or sulphide poor-microcline-quartz rock and in the upper and western fringes by biotite rich schist with feldspathic fragmental characteristics. Molybdenite is a common constituent as very fine disseminated grains in the microcline-quartz rock and is most prominent with gold enrichment. Stibnite and realgar are two of the more common accessory sulphides."

"A dynamic computer model has been developed to simulate the operation of ore crushing plants. The model was created in a general form to allow imitation of a wide variety of secondary crushing circuits with only minor program modifications. The system can be run on either a microcomputer or a large time-sharing main frame computer as required.The size reduction and separation characteristics of crushers and screens are based on standard manufacturers' design and performance data. These calculations are isolated within various subroutines to facilitate tailoring of the model to emulate any particular plant of interest. Input and output data are presented in a variety of formats. Crusher, screen and conveyor amperages and surge bin levels can be presented in a tabular form along with appropriate alarms arising from improper circuit operation or process interruptions. Graphical representation of the circuit together with strip chart data output are features of the system when operated in a microcomputer environment.The program is currently being used at Queen's University as a teaching aid to demonstrate plant operating characteristics, control strategies and design concepts. The acceptance of, and reaction to the program at this level indicates a good potential for it to provide a valuable tool for operator training."

"The first recorded discovery of placer gold in Canada was on the Chaudiere River in Quebec's eastern townships in 1832 and the first major production came from placer deposits in British Columbia in 1858 (Verity 1974). Placer deposits were the major source of gold until the late 1890's, although lode deposits were found in Nova Scotia in 1862. In 1896 the Klondike Gold Rush commenced with the discovery of gold by Henderson and Carmack in the Yukon. The peak was reached in 1900 when over one million ounces of gold valued at approximately $22.3 million were recovered. With the exhaustion of the easily accessible deposits, more capital intensive operations were necessary such as those initiated in 1906 by the Yukon Gold Corporation. This giant dredging operation continued to produce until 1966. Today only a few small operations remain.The development of Canadian lode gold mining began in earnest around 1900 when the railroads were opening up the interior and western part of the country. At this time many discoveries occurred, particularly where mineral outcroppings were near surface. Tremendous impetus for exploration and the reopening of former producers followed the elimination of the gold standard by Great Britain around 1931, and more importantly the United States in 1933, with subsequent stabilization of the price of gold at $35 per ounce in 1934. Prior to this the price of gold was basically unchanged since 1717, approximately, $20 per ounce (Verity, 1974; Green, 1973).The depression of the 1930s adversely affected most industries, however for the gold producers it was a very profitable time. Prices of materials and equipment declined and labour was cheap and plentiful. Interest in gold mining was further stimulated in 1936 when a three year tax exemption was declared for all new metal mines. In 1938 a decline in the value of the Canadian dollar relative to the U.S. dollar benefitted the industry. The second world war provided yet again further incentive for gold production and in 1941 Canadian gold production reached a high of approximately 5.4 million ounces. This figure was not surpassed until 1991 when approximately 5.6 million ounces were produced (Natural Resources Canada, 1996 )."

"Slime coating is a recognized challenge in fine particle flotation, not only in decreasing recovery, but also in reducing the selectivity and hence froth quality. In this presentation, a novel method based on electrophoretic mobility distribution measurement to study slime coatings is described. By measuring electrophoretic mobility distribution of individual minerals and their mixtures, the interactions between these minerals can be evaluated.For illustrative purposes, a model system of fine coals, or oil sands with two different types of fine clays was studied. Flotation tests showed a significant decrease in coal (bitumen) flotation recovery with montmorillonite but not with kaolinite clay addition. When electrophoretic mobility distribution of a fine coal/montmorillonite clay mixture was measured, a single modal zeta potential distribution was obtained, in contrast to a bimodal distribution for fine coalkaolinite clay mixture. This finding suggests a stronger adhesion of montmorillonite than kaolinite clays on fine coal surfaces. In the case of bitumen, the bimodal zeta potential distribution was measured for the mixture of bitumen emulsion and kaolinite or montmorillonite, indicating a weak attraction of the clays by bitumen. In the presence of calcium, however, a single modal zeta potential distribution was obtained in the mixture of bitumen emulsion with montmorillonite but not kaolinite clays. These findings are in excellent agreement with bitumen flotation results, demonstrating that the electrophoretic distribution measurement is a powerful tool to study slime coating phenomenon in a complex fine particle flotation system."
