Introduction The Wakefield plant of the Aluminum Company of Canada, Limited - a member of the Aluminum, Limited, group of companies - produces magnesia, magnesia fertilizer ingredient, and hydrated lime, from brucitic limestone. Wakefield is on the Gatineau river in Wakefield township, Quebec, some 22 miles north of Ottawa. The plant is near the western bank of the river adjacent to the Ottawa-Maniwaki highway and branch line of the Canadian Pacific railway. The plant is unique in the sense that it is the only place in Canada where brucite is processed. It is also distinguished for its outstanding safety record, as not a single lost-time accident occurred during either 1948 or 1949. The plant is amply provided with safety and comfort provisions in keeping with the standard practice in all of the twelve plants operated in Canada by Alcan and its associated companies. History Following the identification of brucite in the Rutherglen and Bryson districts in Ontario, occurrences of the mineral were discovered in the Wakefield area, Quebec, in 1939. After exploratory work on these deposits and investigation by the Bureau of Mines, Ottawa, on a method of extracting the brucite from the ore, a plant for treating the ore from the Maxwell property was built in 1941 by the Aluminum Company of Canada and commenced operations in early 1942. The process used is more or less in accordance with the method worked out by Mr. M. F. Goudge of the Bureau of Mines.

Measures taken by mining companies around the world to reduce their carbon footprints are becoming increasingly important in the sector securing its social licence to operate. The options for measures reduce to three categories of activity: i) demand reduction by avoiding unnecessary waste of supplied energy, ii) improving the utilization of energy that does have to be consumed and iii) adopting low carbon energy production options?including renewable energy. As well as the environmental imperative, as the prices of electricity, gas and liquid fuels increase, so the economic case for activities i) to iii) gains higher priority, especially in such an energy intensive industry. The specific energy consumption for certain upstream minerals industry operations in Canada is reported to be as follows: underground mining: 99.5 kWh/tonne mined; surface mining: 11.7 kWh/tonne mined; base metal processing: 81.4 kWh/tonne milled; gold processing: 99.6 kWh/tonne milled. Around 508 kWh/tonne (slag) of heat is reported to be available in cooling slag from 1500°C to 25°C; an amount that is simply indicative of the energy intensity of downstream smelting and refining operations. Low carbon, energy saving technology options that are available to mining industry companies lead to projects with return rates that must compete alongside other capital intensive projects considered by mining company boards. Energy projects frequently involve longer payback periods and lower rates of return than those of competing bids for capital, such as those for development of new mineral properties. For energy services companies (ESCOs) that specialize in the financing, construction, and the efficient operation and maintenance of energy projects, the same returns and payback periods may be considered acceptable or even attractive. For the ESCO, the key commercial risk mitigating factor is a securing a long term contract for the supply of energy.

ABSTRACT: The Canadian oil sands provide some of the harshest mining conditions in the world. Asoperations demand ever bigger tools, the toll on large mobile mining equipment is high, with structural life often half of that expected. Soft ground conditions predominantly lead to fatigue failure scenarios, poor stability, and inconsistent payload evaluations. These challenges are not solely a concern for Canadian oil sands mines; there are far-reaching implications for surface mining equipment in any poor ground-operating environment. This paper focuses on the basics of payload evaluation, motion response, and a simple estimate of structural life for haulers.

Corrosion is an electrochemical process that causes degradation and deterioration of various steel works (pipelines, drains, cisterns) whether they are buried, immersed, or not. Worldwide, we estimate that corrosion destroys a quarter of the annual production of steel at a rate of 5 tons per second. Several techniques are used to protect against corrosion. Among these processes, Cathodic protection, which is regarded as the best technique to assure the protection of steel, works against this phenomenon. This is achieved either by a system of reactive anodes, or by the technique of impressed current protection or other techniques. Before any installation of cathodic protection, a preliminary study and pre-evaluation of certain parameters must be made. In the present work, we will present an example of dimensioning of an installation of cathodic protection by imposed current of a pipeline using solar energy, where we discuss the following items: ? Evolutions of the potential as well as current along the pipeline and their respective expressions deduced from the laws known as telegraphists; ? Range of protection (potential of protection along the pipeline); ? Influence of the isolation resistance of the coating on the range of protection; Effect of the aging of the coating and its influence on the current of protection

The work of Mariner Mines Limited from 1963 to the present time is detailed, particular attention being paid to the recent discoveries of copper, silver and lead mineralization that have greatly enhanced the potential of the area.

"This paper will essentially update the information that is already known and published on the limestones of the Province of Quebec. The excellent report by M. F. Goudge (1935)m is difficult to improve upon and the areas of limestone quarrying are generally the same as they were at the time of Goudge's report. Our knowledge of the limestones of Quebec has been improved considerably in recent years by the publications of T. H. Clark, 2 who, since 1938, has been mapping and reporting on these lime-stones and has discussed their stratigraphy, their structural features, their history and their economic value. One economic aspect is the presence of natural gas in these formations and the possible occurrence of oil. A total of 150 test holes had been drilled to a depth of more than 500 feet by the end of 1967 and, in addition, at least 256 more shallow holes had been put down in the St. Lawrence Lowlands. The information from these test holes has greatly improved our knowledge of the thickness and extent. of the various formations of Paleozoic limestone and shale in Quebec.This paper will then review briefly the limestone occurrences in Quebec, using the old as well as the more recent reports as principal references"

Particle shape characterisation has an important role to play in mineral processing, to clarify effects of shape on rheology, equipment wear rates, comminution, classification, sizing and flotation. However in industry, shape characterisation is not routine, and the most commonly used shape descriptor in the field (circularity/ angularity/ sphericity) is not invariant. This study aims to investigate shape measurements for a fine particulate ore sample measured with different analytical devices. Two Automated Scanning Electron Microscopy devices with Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectrometry (FEI QEMSCAN® and Zeiss Mineralogic®), and a camera based image-sizer using dynamic image analysis (Retsch CAMSIZER® XT) were compared. Each device was used to analyse the shape characteristics of specific particles in both a coarse sample (–212/+150 µm) and a fine sample (-53 µm) of UG2 platinum ore. Circularity and Roundness frequency distributions obtained from the three devices were then compared. For selected individual particles, circularity showed higher variability than roundness, and the sample circularity distributions obtained by the three devices were completely different. It is clear that circularity data from different studies relying on different devices should not be compared on an absolute scale. The shape parameter roundness was found to be a more robust descriptor than circularity, and it can give a stronger indication of a particulate sample’s shape characteristics on an absolute scale. However, there were still significant differences in the roundness measurements obtained by the CAMSIZER XT and the two Auto-SEM devices, which was attributed to the dissimilar mechanisms of image capture.

"The effect of extended ball milling has been studied for two industrial processes: (1) the processing of metal sulphide concentrates; and (2) the carbothermic reduction of ilmenite to synthetic rutile. The plant concentrates were a gold ore with 128 g/t Au of which 8% was non-refractory and a zinc concentrate with copper impurities.The gold concentrate showed complete dissolution of the gold bearing minerals after milling giving almost complete gold liberation. The zinc concentrate showed almost all of the sulphides had solubilized leaving the gangue and elemental sulphur. A study of pure pyrite and arsenopyrite shows that selective dissolution should be possible by a simple leaching process directly after milling.The milling of ilmenite and coal together results in a temperature decrease of 150°C in the subsequent carbothermic reduction of ilmenite, in addition to improving both the rate of reaction and the selectivity of reduction to rutile. IntroductionAlmost all mineral processing plants use mills for the size reduction of particles prior to physical and chemical processing. When continuing beyond size reduction the energy transferred causes deformation, breakage and realloying of particles giving a steady-state particle size. The breaking also causes increasing damage to the crystal structure by formation of smaller grains giving an increasing number of grain boundaries and increasing crystalline defects due to deformation. The increasing number of grain boundaries and defects leads to increased reactivity, which can be seen directly by a reaction within the mill, or indirectly, via a decrease in the subsequent annealing temperature required for reaction."

"Jones & Laughlin Mining Company, Ltd. operate the Adams mine at Kirkland Lake, Ontario, where they mine approximately 4,000,000 tons of extremely hard iron-formation and 3,500,000 tons of volcanic waste rock annually in order to produce 1,100,000 tons of iron pellets. This paper will discuss the maintenance of the four Model 1600 P & H shovels and the two 50-R drills used to obtain this production. The chief maintenance problems at the mine are due to the hard, abrasive ore and the cold winter weather."

Exploration at both Greenfields and Brownfields stages entails business risks of different nature and success rates. Greenfields exploration is exceedingly assumptive and the success rate of exploration or return on investment is low because exploration is an inherently risky business. Brownfields exploration on the other hand is less risky, as the geology is better understood, but generally speaking since the larger ore bodies close to surface have already been found the return is lower. In addition, most exploration at the Brownfields stage is generally more expensive due to extensive use of drilling. Surface geology mapping and expensive drilling have been key technical contributors to most exploration programs over the last two decades. However, as client expectations, logistics, target depths and complexity of exploration programs increase, there has been a growing emphasis on using geophysical techniques to complement other methods. Integration and optimization of various geoscientific disciplines is becoming more important in successful exploration programs of the future to reduce exploration risks, successful integrated exploration requires putting reliable geophysical parameters and correspondent petrophysical property contrasts into an assumed or conceptual geological model. This paper discusses a new multi-parameter geophysical methodology finalized in a unique conceptual geologic model which can be used either as a root model in grassroots exploration or as an efficient tool in Brownfields exploration to successfully find satellite orebodies of almost any size. The application of a new multi-parametric geophysical approach to Brownfields exploration is illustrated with examples from Manitoba, including a past producing nickel sulphide deposit in Lynn Lake and the Reed Copper deposit, currently in development.

I THINK it can be safely said that no mining operation, whetl1er open-pit or underground, is ever entirely free of water. It follows that every ton of ore bears a charge which represents, either directly or indirectly, the cost of keeping the mine workings as dry as possible. Water problems occur in all phases of mining operations. They cause difficult and costly drilling conditions during the exploration stage, they often seriously delay mine development, they can slow mine production and reduce efficiency, and they are a continued burden over the life of the mine. It is therefore in the interest of all mining men to be familiar with the methods and materials used for grouting. The most common grouting material is cement. Cement grouting is old and well established, and many engineers are familiar with its uses and limitations. The behavior of gold in hydrothermal systems is evaluated as a function of pH and oxygen and sulphur activities at temperatures to 250°C. Under conditions of stability of pyrite and argillic alteration as emblages, gold will be transported as bisulphide complexes. In systems containing significant amounts of arsenic, thioarsenide complexes may be important. Oxidation, dilution and reduction in sulphur activity would cause gold deposition from saturated solutions under these conditions. Gold chloride complexes will predominate under oxidized conditions where hematite or other oxides are stable and depo ition would result from increase in pH and/or reduction . Absorption and coprecipitation are po sible mechanisms of deposition for gold in certain low grade depo it . Low concentrations of gold in the transporting solution combined with the ignificant solubility of gold as bisulphide complexes, sugge t hydrothermal solutions rarely may be saturated with gold and coprecipitation with sulphides may be an important initial depositional process. Recrystallization of the sulphides in the presence of the hydrothermal solution would be re ponsible for release of gold to more table ite . It is estimated that China accounts for 94% of the world supply of rare earths (Roskill, 2011). This fact, together with the impact of China?s export policy, poses a substantial risk to the security of the rare earth supply as well as a rare earth price risk. This situation has motivated an increase in the number of rare earth projects under development, i.e., there are currently more than 440 worldwide (Technology Metals Research, 2012). However, economically and environmentally acceptable processing technology to produce tradable products from rare earths (e.g., separated rare earth oxides) is not freely available on the market at the moment. In this respect, a lot of research and development has been initiated on this topic, in academia as well as in industry. Using a proprietary model and scenario-based analysis, we studied the impact that the development of rare earth processing technologies would have on the rare earth market and the economic feasibility of rare earth projects mentioned before. The analysis showed that this impact varies depending on the technology type (e.g., technology can affect project production volume, cost structure or both) and the legal context of the invention (e.g., free or limited by patenting availability of a new technology). The effect of a technology which influences project production volume is not the same as of a technology which changes project cost structure. The impact of a patented processing technology differs from the impact of a processing technology which is freely available on the market. In the case of a new technology which is limited by patenting, its impact depends on the market position (?producing?, ?next-coming?, or ?not producing? project) of the patent holder. The paper contributes to existing research by studying the dependence of the expected micro- and macroeconomic impact of rare earth processing technology developments on the properties of a new technology (e.g., costs, legal framework etc.). By this means, the paper adds to existing knowledge and attempts to make the rare earths market more transparent and predictable from a perspective outside China.

"The QR gold deposit lies in the Cariboo plateau region of central British Columbia. The deposit was discovered in 1977 and since then a mineable reserve of 1.3 million tonnes grading 4.7 g/t Au has' been outlined in three separate zones. Soil sampling of glacial tills followed by diamond drilling of favourable host rocks proved to be key exploration techniques.The deposit is situated in the southern Quesnel terrane along the eastern fringe of the Intermontane Belt which here comprises a sequence of basic and intermediate volcanics and a series of stocks of alkaline affinity; generally diorite, monzonite and syenite. Hornfels and epidote-rich ferromagnesian exoskarn and sulphide-rich mantos have developed in a metamorphic aureole formed around a central diorite stock. Gold-rich zones lie along the outer periphery of the aureole where bodies of gold-bearing epidote-rich skarn and auriferous mantos rich in epidote and pyrite have formed in beds of calcareous tuffite lying at the top of a thick basaltic sequence. The deposit is regarded as' a subclass of gold skarn deposits. Diagnostic features are its association with alkalic intrusive rocks in a subvolcanic setting and the presence of oxidized, epidote-rich mineral assemblages.IntroductionThe QR gold deposit lies within the Cariboo plateau region of central British Columbia, 58 km southeast of Quesnel. The deposit, owned by Kinross Gold, was discovered during a regional reconnaissance program by Dome Exploration (Canada) Limited and Newconex Canadian Exploration in 1977. SULPHUR, like the minerals of coal, iron and petroleum, is one of the essential materials in our modern expanding industrial civilization. Before discussing the salient features of the production of sulphur from the Canadian sour gas, it seems appropriate to outline the historical past and probable future utilization of sulphur. The ancient Greek writer Homer spoke of its "pest-averting sulphur" and the "divine purifying fumigation". Ancient alchemists found sulphur to be a fascinating and baffling material. The discovery of gun powder in the year of 1250, and its application to the art of war a, century later, made sulphur an important commodity in the progress of mankind. The initial manufacture of sulphuric acid in the year of 1736 by the Englishman Joshua Ward, established the basis of a chemical industry that today utilizes 80 per cent of the consumption of elemental sulphur. Commercial production of the chemical soda ash ( N a2C03) discovered in 1787 by the famous Leblanc Process, in-creased international demand for the element sulphur and marks the birthday of the Sicilian sulphur industry.

Men who work with metals today are a bit more realistic. I haven't heard of a metallurgist who expects to develop any one alloy that will resist all corrosive media. In the field of stain-less steels, there are about forty different types of alloys that are used where corrosion is a •problem.A stainless product is ordinarily selected because it offers one or more of the following qualities:(1) Resistance to corrosion (2) Resistance to oxidation at high temperatures (3) Good mechanical properties at room temperature (4) Good mechanical properties at high or low temperature (5) Attractive appearance (6) Ease of maintenanceToday we are interested in discussing the stainless steel family of alloys because of their .ability to resist corrosion. We• will not try to explain the Theory of Corrosion. Let us assume that, when surface potential and oxide formations are properly controlled, iron will resist attack in various chemi.cal solutions. The addition of alloying elements to iron does this for stainless steels. The principal stainless alloys used by various Canadian industries are listed in the accompanying Table."

Golden Star Resources Bogoso operates in Ghana’s Western Region. The gold recovery plant includes; a flotation circuit producing a concentrate for the BIOX® process that oxidizes sulphides before a CIL circuit; and a dedicated CIL circuit. BIOX® uses bacteria, therefore water from the BIOX® and CIL plants remained separated; CN water could not be introduced into the flotation / BIOX® circuit. The operation built a process water inventory with high TDS and installed a process water treatment plant (PWTP). Water was released in compliance the permits but containing some thiocyanate. The PWTP brine was returned to the TSF, further exacerbating the TDS. The operation experienced a drought removing the traditional water sources; the team evaluated the options to maintain production - various water streams were laboratory tested provided options for water use. The paper presents the story (treatment chemistry and process chemistry) of continued operations by treating stored water and PWTP discharge water with peroxide; brine usage within the CIL circuit, which increased gold recovery (laboratory testing) and reduced the TDS. Water flows were further modified to include hydraulic tailings re-mining to a CIL circuits. Details of the recovery, basic chemistry and costs savings are provided.

"Project development has been increasingly formalized in the past decade, with most organizations having extensive and descriptive deliverables documents and processes to govern the stage gate progress of capital projects. Although this has improved the general governance of capital project development and execution, it has perhaps not led to improved business success. This paper identifies specific challenges associated with developing complex projects with multiple stakeholder interests over the long timeframe of the project life cycle. The paper outlines these challenges and suggests management approaches and aspects of project development where increased focus is required to achieve improved business outcomes."
