This paper introduces new technology of oxygen evolution anodes which can be applied to produce copper, zinc, cobalt, and other metals by electrowinning. The anode consists of nano iridium oxide particles dispersed in amorphous tantalum oxide matrix as a catalytic layer formed on a titanium substrate. The anode can reduce oxygen evolution potential by 0.25 to 0.55 V compared to commercially available lead alloy anodes and can suppress unwanted side reactions such as manganese oxyhydroxide, lead oxide, cobalt oxyhydroxide which occur during oxygen evolution in the electrowinning solutions. This technology is effective for environmentally friendly electrowinning processes with low energy consumption and less anodic deposition.

Studies of a protium treatment for grain refinement of a + ß type titanium alloy are reviewed and recent experimental results are introduced. Protium treatment consists of the following three processes: (1) protium absorption, (2) martensitic transformation and hot working, and (3) final treatment for protium desorption and recrystallization. A combination of these processes results in the ultra-fine grains of 0.3 to 0.5 µm in diameter with high angle boundaries. The ultra-fine-grained material exhibits superplastic elongation of over 9000%. Superplastic forming was successfully used to fabricate a denture base. These materials may be widely applicable as biomaterials in various medical industries.

The biological heap leaching at Zijin copper mine is currently the largest industrial application of biohydrometallurgy and one of the earliest mines to develop biological metallurgy technology in China. Since 2001, through demonstration plant and different expansion stages, it has been developed to produce 20,000 tons cathode copper annually. However the ore grade of heap leaching gradually decline year by year with copper grade average at around 0.23% now. The copper mineral is mainly the secondary copper sulfide, and symbiosis with higher content pyrite, the sulfur and iron contents is about 15 times as copper in the ore (S/Cu>15), so the acid and iron treatment of leachate, extractant and acid mine waste water is a great challenge. Combined with located in the rainy area of southern China, huge amounts of over 10 million cubic meters acid drainage need to be treated every year, so the recovery of copper from waste water as well as low grade ore is one of the characteristics of this process. This paper in general introduced the operation of heap leaching, solvent extraction, stripping and electrowinning process in Zijin mine, summarized the experience of production and technical practice, and discussed the methods of heap construction, leaching rate enhancement, third phase formation and treatment, mine effluent treatment, resource recovery and heap slope reclamation. INTRODUCTION The Zijinshan gold and copper mine is located in southeast China, Fujian province, and the typical distribution characteristics of gold and copper deposit are "upper gold and lower copper", both are large porphyry deposits. By the end of 2017, the accumulated proven reserves of available gold resources were 318 tons, copper are 2.15 million tons, and the prospective reserves of copper are more than 5 million tons. The gold mining is open pit while the copper mining is open pit and underground. The cut-off grade of gold mining is 0.15 g/t, and that of copper mining is 0.15%. A large number of very low-grade gold ores (grade <0.30 g/t) adopt a combined ore-dressing process of “partial crushing/ore washing/reprocessing/heap leaching (overlying)/ carbon slurry" independently developed, while flotation and bio-heap leaching are adopted for copper mine. Among them, copper ore with more than 0.25% copper content enters the flotation system to produce copper concentrate, while that of less than 0.25% copper content is processed by bio-heap leaching, solvent extraction and electrowinning. Zijin biological heap leaching plant is the first mine in China to achieve the scale of annual output of ten thousand tons of cathode copper since 2006. In 2008, the solvent extraction and electrowinning system were expanded, now with a daily processing capacity of 20,000 tons of ores, an annual output of 20,000 tons of cathode copper, the expanded plant is the largest biohydrometallurgy plant in China.

"Geopolymers are inorganic semi-amorphous three dimensional silico-aluminates of the poly(sialate) type (-Si-O-Al-0-) or of the poly(sialate-siloxo) type (-Si-O-Al-O-Si-0-). Polycondensation occurs at low temperatures with geopolymers being stable up to 12oo0 c. Research, development and application technology pertaining to geopolymers is being undertaken jointly with Dr. Joseph Davidovits of The Institute for Applied Archaeological Sciences of Florida, U.S.A. This joint focused upon the chemical Barry University in Miami Shores, research and development program has stabilization and solidification of various waste products through geopolymerization. Of particular interest is the geopolymerization of mine wastes including tailings and waste rock derived from the processing of base metals, precious metals, potash, coal and uranium deposits.INTRODUCTIOND. Comrie Consulting Ltd., in cooperation and technical liaison with CANMET, Ottawa has been testing the application of geopolymers to mining wastes. Corporate efforts to date have concentrated upon reactive acid tailings, principally from the abandoned Kam-Kotia Mine site, and dewatered paint waste sludges. Test work conducted to date has successfully yielded geopolymer treated materials and wastes with increased chemical and structural stability. Wastes containing heavy metals, cyanides, arsenic and sulphur dioxide have been successfully geopolymerized."

"The low consumption of reagents can probably be attributed to a good clean type of ore. The cyanide level is kept at 0. 8 lb/ ton of solution and the lime at 1. 8 to 1.9 lb per ton of solution (pH 12. 2 to 12 .3). Experience in cutting down the lime level in half produced troubles in the presses, in the refinery and resulted in higher cyanide consumption. Finally the residue increased under these conditions, High lime always seems to prevent the trouble from occurring.A survey at one mine of the taxable work, performed in the mine shops for use in the mine, showed that under the new regulations, this had increased some 30 times what it was before the new rules came into effect on June 14, 1963.A water softener idea is incorporated at Lamaque with the crude addition of 100 lb of lime per shift to a spare agitator to precipitate the bicarbonates as carbonates from the water before it enters the mill. The lime titration of the softened water is about 0,2 to 0.3 lb per ton of solution (pH 11). This water is used mainly on the filters as washes."

Investment in coal resource development is affected by a variety of uncertain factors. Investors can make a flexible, strategic decision to achieve the value of risk implicated in those uncertain factors. Therefore, based on real-option theory, we identified key uncertain factors that affect a coal resource investment project, and revealed the formation mechanism of option value in coal resource developing investment project. Then, a multi-factor decision making model was established for a coal resource development investment project with random changes of coal price, interest rate, convenience yield and production cost. Finally, we tested the model and analyzed relevant parameters by applying living data. Our results indicate this model reflects the value of risk implicated in uncertain factors for coal resource development investment, and is able to determine a critical point of decision making change when coal price and production cost varym respectively. By means of parameters analysis, the convenience yield has a positive effect on the project value. The interest rate has a negative effect.

"The Line Creek Project is located in southeastern British Columbia, approximately 25 kilometres north of Sparwood. The design is to produce a total of2.7 million tonnes of coal annually. This is made up of1.4million tonnes of thermal coal and 1.3 million tonnes of metallurgical coal.Construction commenced in the spring of 1980 and mining operations began in July 1981. The thermal processing plant, maintenance and dry facilities, as well as extensive road and bridge construction, were completed in early 1982. A collective agreement was signed with the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 115, in June 1981.The first unit train left Line Creek on February 18, 1982 with a load of thermal coal bound for the Ssangyong Corporation in Southern Korea. It was the start of a ten-year contract to supply 350,000 tonnes annually to fire their cement kilns. Additional contracts for 750,000 tonnes will fuel the boilers of Korea Electric Company&apos;s San Chon Po and Go-Jeong power stations. Metallurgical coal shipments are scheduled to leave the Roberts Bank port in Vancouver in April 1983.Tracking an introductory presentation given at the 1981 CIM Annual General Meeting in Calgary, this paper highlights the salient developments by which ""The Line Creek Project"" has progressed during the past year to the"" Line Creek Operation"". Line Creek has com e on stream as scheduled and will meet all contractual commitments pertaining to timing, volumes and quality for thermal coal. The first train load left the plant in mid-February, and the first boat load to Korea departed Roberts Bank in mid-April. Metallurgical coal deliveries will commence in April 1983."

"In the presence of sulfidic refractory ores, increasing the dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration can positively affect the gold leaching rate. To identify the role of DO in gold cyanidation, electrochemical behavior was studied in the presence of 3 different ores. Sample 1 was a low sulfide pyrite ore, contained 5.14% pyrite, 0.19% galena and 3.09% S. Sample 2 was a pyriticore as well, contained more sulfide as 8.35% S, and 12.4% of pyrite. Sample 3 was a tailing of silicate gold ore, still containing75 g/tAu, 0.13% Pb and 0.18% S. Gold cyanidation kinetics were studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and chronoamperometry tests. With sample 1, the gold oxidation peak current density from CV curve was increased to 1.38mA/cm2under oxygen injection, while it was only 0.66 mA/cm2with air injection. From chronoamperometry test, the reaction rate was also faster under oxygen injection. Sample 2 showed similar behavior with sample 1, but the gold oxidation peaks higher than sample 1, i.e. 1.75 and 2.27 mA/cm2, under air and oxygen injection, respectively. However, it seemed that the gold oxidation was impeded by sulfide ions for a longer period. In the presence of sample 3, the gold oxidation peak was the highest among three ores –2.75mA/cm2under oxygen injection, because of its lowest sulfide content. However, from chronoamperometry test, it was also shown that the gold oxidation was impeded because of a significant amount of Pb in the ore sample.INTRODUCTIONIt is well known that gold is leached under oxidative condition (Marsden &House, 2006). Through the most representative and oldest gold leaching technique, cyanidation, more than 90% of gold can be selectively leached from an ore. According to Elsner’s equation, gold is leached in cyanide solution by forming cyanide complex [Au (CN)2–], and oxygen is consumed as an oxidant(Eq. 1)."

"In this work, the kinetics of ferric-ferrous redox reaction on a passivated sphalerite electrode is studied by the application of chronoamperometry method in 0.5 mol L-1 H2SO4 solution. The electrochemical behaviour of ferric and ferrous couple was investigated on two sphalerite minerals acquired from two different geological regions (Iran and Canada). The carbon paste electrode (CPE) of sphalerite was initially prepared and passivated in 0.5 mol L-1 H2SO4 solution and after reaching the steady-state condition, ferric and ferrous sulfate solution was added. The registered current density differences between the current density of the passivated electrode and that of the electrode in the iron salts added solution were interpreted for kinetics of ferric-ferrous reduction-oxidation reaction. The equilibrium potential for ferric-ferrous couple on sphalerites surface was about 500 mV vs. Ag/AgCl. The exchange current density (i0) for ferric-ferrous redox reactions on the sphalerite samples had the same magnitude of 10–6 A cm–2. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements at 550 mV vs. Ag/AgCl illustrated that sphalerite oxidation was controlled by two charge transfer process in both of Fe-free and Fe-containing solutions. The charge transfer resistance remarkably decreased when Fe salts added to the 0.5 mol L-1 H2SO4 solution, owing to the ferric-ferrous redox reactions being the predominant reactions on sphalerite surface.INTRODUCTION Direct atmospheric leaching processes for sphalerite concentrates are performed by reduction of an oxidant (e.g. ferric ion and oxygen) and oxidation of sphalerite to zinc ions. "In order to determine the in-situ shear strength of rock joints, large scale testing is required. However, this is both expensive and difficult to execute. One possible method to overcome this may be to use photogrammetry to capture large joint surface roughness in-situ and downscale it to replica samples, which could be sheared in laboratory. In this paper, as a first part in such a method, a technique to digitize surface roughness and to produce replica samples for laboratory shear testing from a larger joint sample are presented. First, a thin granitic rock slice with dimensions of 1.75 m x 0.95 m of granitic intact rock was chosen for the study. The joint surface is fresh and created through tensile induced splitting. The large joint sample is digitized using photogrammetry. Then, one fullscale 1.7 m x 0.6 m geometry is cropped from the digitized joint geometry and then subsamples at 10x, 7.5x, 5x, 2.5x and 1x scales. All sub-geometries are scaled down digitally to produce 0.17 m by 0.06 m geometries. The geometries are used to make casting molds both positive and negative to produce samples with perfect matedness. The casting molds are 3D printed in polylactic acid plastic and C60/75 concrete is cast to produce a replica series. In addition to the creation of this replica series, two pilot replicas are also tested using a portable shear box with a 0.5 MPa normal pressure. The results from the pilot rounds are presented and discussed. Finally, suggestions for future research are given.INTRODUCTIONThe rock mass strength is in many cases controlled by the shear strength of rock joints, especially in hard rock masses. The shear strength is generally found to be influenced by several parameters, including normal stress, the basic friction angle of the intact rock, the joint surface roughness, the joint wall compressive strength, the matedness of the joint surfaces, weathering and infilling. The effect of these parameters for the joint shear strength can be evaluated in laboratory scale. However, the shear strength is known to be scale dependent. How the scale effect influences the strength is not fully understood. The general consensus is that the shear strength decreases when sample size increases, i.e. a negative scale effect (Bandis et al. 1981). However, some studies have presented contradictory results, see for example Hencher et al. (1993) and Kutter & Otto (1990). The extent and nature of the scale effect is still a question of debate (Tatone & Grasselli 2013)."

Abstract -The Riviera tungsten occurrence in the Cape Province of South Africa was discovered in October 1979 as a result of stream-sediment panned concentrate sampling. The Cape age granite and late Precambrian Malmesbury Group carbonates and chlorite schists which it intrudes and which host the mineralization are covered by between 10 m and 30 m of Tertiary/Recent alluvium and clay. The scheelite/powellite and molybdenite mineralization occurs in a greisenized granite cupola with an overprint of porphyry-type alteration as well as in minor skarns. The ore reserve is estimated to be 46 million tonnes at an average grade of 0.2160Jo W03 and 0.020% Mo. The deposit is uneconomic at current tungsten prices.

ABSTRACT The experiments described demonstrate that crude commercial lithium containing in the order of 0.5 per cent sodium can be refined, the resulting metal containing as low as 0.001 per cent sodium. During the process, the metal is vaporized and condensed at a gauge pressure of less than 0.04 micron. Considerable operating data and a detailed description of the experimental equipment are included. INTRODUCTION DUE TO THE unusual properties of lithium metal, its use is likely to increase considerably during the next few years (1, 2). This is of particular interest to Canadians because there are important deposits of lithium-containing minerals, especially spodumene, in Canada and it is hoped that lithium compounds and lithium metal will be produced from these deposits in the fairly near future. In order to assist in the development of this industry, the Mines Branch of the Department of Mines and Technical Surveys has initiated a programme of research in lithium metallurgy. In 1948, a paper (4) was published on methods of producing lithium metal and its alloys. Data on the corrosion resistance of some lithium alloys were included. In 1949, a paper (3) was published which showed that the addition of a small percentage of lithium to zinc anodes used for cathodic protection will improve their usefulness under certain circumstances.

The effects of laser power and joint gap on the welding quality of 2-mm butt joints of ZE41A-T5 sand castings were investigated using a continuous wave 4 kW Nd:YAG laser system and 1.6-mm EZ33A-T5 filler wire at a welding speed of 6 m/min and surface defocusing. The smooth weld profiles with the minor welding defects were obtained at a laser power of 4 kW and joint gap of 0.3-0.4 mm. The hardness values in the fusion zone are similar to those of the base metal but there is a drop in the heat-affected zone after a natural aging of 18 months.

TWO years ago, at the annual meeting of this Society, the writer presented a paper dealing with various aspects of the water problems existing in the Cape Breton coal-mining area. Much of that paper was of a theoretical nature, in that an attempt was made to get at the fundamental principles underlying the problems, in order to establish a sort of background against which future results could be laid. Up to that time, only Central power plant in Glace Bay had been under observation, and, since the work had been in progress only a year, it was recognized that there were strong possibilities that certain variations in procedure might have to be introduced as w; became better acquainted with our problem. We were by no means certain that we had covered all the facts of the case. The present paper will therefore be of the nature of a progress report, rather than a formal contribution to the Society. Subjects of a theoretical or academic nature will be avoided as far as possible, attention being confined chiefly to the results obtained during the past two years. In looking over the work with low-pressure boilers, there are certain general conclusions that can apparently be safely drawn. Wherever possible, proper operating conditions will be expressed in terms of appropriate units. Absence of corrosion in boilers where the alkalinity has been maintained within the pH range 11.0 to 11.4 forces one to the conclusion that these are safe working limits. Previous experience had shown that corrosion would occur if the alkalinity were much reduced. Higher alkalinities are un-necessary, more expensive, and are said to introduce the possibility of pitting. We made no attempt to obtain quantitative data in respect to pitting. It is said to occur at pH 12.0. Consequently, conditions of alkalinity were main-tained well below this figure. In the above paragraph, the pH range 11.0 to 11.4 applies to boiler waters which have received the lime and soda treatment. The general practice, when this treatment is employed, is to use 1.0 lb. lime to 7.0 lb. washing soda. At Central power plant, soda-ash is at present substituted for washing soda, the equivalent proportions being kept the same. But not all the plants are on the lime and soda treatment. At Waterford Lake, a 1: 1 mixture of soda-ash and trisodium phosphate is satisfactorily employed, and in Sydney Mines and at No. 3 power plant in Sydney, good results are being obtained at a somewhat greater cost with a commercial phosphate treatment.

If you ask most diamond drillers if they have ever encountered methane gas, the answer would probably be yes. This paper explores a serious methane gas explosion that the author experienced while diamond drilling at a northerly Ontario mine. It is hoped that by documenting this event, people may be alerted to the hidden danger posed by confined methane in underground workings. Methane gas tends to be a problem the deeper you get in any Canadian gold mine. Common procedure when encountering methane is to take readings at the collar of the hole and at different lengths from the source. Monitoring continues until the readings drop below 0.25 ppm. Methane is a tasteless odorless gas that is usually locked up in the seams of the rock or is a product of decaying organic material. Occasionally, the gas is released abruptly over a short period of time. Sometimes the gas can continue to vent for months or even years. In small concentrations, methane is relatively safe. In concentrations under 0.25 ppm methane gas is considered safe to work around. Concentrations over 0.25 ppm can become dangerous. During the summer of 2001, Chris Veldhoen was drilling at a gold mine in Ontario. There were three electric hydraulic diamond drills on the 39 meter level, approximately 5200 feet deep. Two Longyear LM 55 drills were about 40 feet apart and another LM 75 was about 2000 feet away. The two LM 55?s were set up to drill holes no deeper than 350 meters. All three drills had been set up on the same spot for more than a month. None of the three drills had ever encountered methane gas in the entire time they had been drilling on the level. On the day shift of July 13 2001, the driller on Chris? cross shift hit a small pocket of gas. He tested the hole and got a reading above 0.25 ppm. He proceeded to rope off the area with a ?DO NOT ENTER - METHANE GAS? sign and a rope denying access beyond the sign. On Saturday, July 14, Chris was instructed to install a Margo plug in the hole that was emitting methane gas. Methane is usually odorless, but occasionally when encountered underground, is accompanied by a rotten egg smell. As he walked to the drill, he could not smell methane gas. He proceeded to test the hole and got a reading of 0.22 ppm methane. This number was in the acceptable range for drilling, but he plugged the hole anyway.

"What is now known as the 'Waite section' of the property of Waite Amulet Mines, Limited, was originally the Waite-Ackerman-Montgomery mine. It includes a group of twenty-eight claims lying on either side of the Duprat-Dufresnoy township line, and about 8 miles north-northwest of Noranda, Quebec. ,The original discovery of ore on the property was made by Thomas Montgomery in Block Q, Duprat township, and was staked by him on behalf of himself, I. C. Waite, and C. H. Ackerman, in the summer of 1925. The property was optioned late in 1925 to N. A. Timmins who, after trenching and drilling the deposit, sold his 85 per cent interest to Noranda Mines, Limited. Early in 1927, a company known as Waite-Ackerman-Montgomery Mines, Limited, was formed and shaft sinking and development undertaken. Production commenced in August, 1928, ·and continued tJ May, 1930, when, owing to falling metal prices, shipment of direct smelting ore was stopped. Development of the mine by shaft sinking, drifting, and drilling continued until March, 1932, when owing to the prolonged low price of metals, the property was closed down. In September, 1933, an amalgamation with Amulet Mines, Limited, was effected, the new company being called Waite Amulet Mines, Limited. Early in 1937 operations were resumed, first by direct shipments to the smelter and later by aerial tramway to the Amulet mill. Operations have been continuous up to the present time, reaching an average of 720 tons a day milled for the year 1940. Production during the initial period (1928-1930) amounted to 75,811 tons, having an average grade of 7 .11 per cent copper, 4.47 per cent zinc, and 0.03 oz. gold and 0.65 oz. silver per ton. During the second period (1937 to end of 1946) , 1,060,524 tons, having an average grade of 4.53 per cent copper, 2.97 per cent zinc, and 0.03 oz. gold and 0.65 oz. silver per ton, were produced."

"To achieve an optimal metallurgical performance in the flotation process the bubble diameter should be between 0.5 and 2.5 mm. To control bubble size, frothers are added, reducing bubble size and conferring bubble stability against coalescence. However, the bubble generation mechanism determines predominantly the bubble size distribution produced. In mechanical flotation cells, bubbles are produced by the shear stress generated by a rotating blade on a gas stream. This mechanism produces a log normal bubble size distribution. In contrast, in column flotation, jetting gas injectors are commonly used in Chile and the bubble size distribution is bimodal with small and large bubbles. Bubbles larger than 2.5 mm mean a loss in surface area, while bubbles smaller than 0.5 mm move with the pulp stream and therefore collide less frequently with particles. In this paper, a new device based on a jetting sparger and a deflector disc (impinging jetting) is evaluated as an alternative sparger for column flotation.The new device was tested in a rectangular acrylic cell 1 m × 0.5 m × 3 m. High-speed cinematography was used to compare bubble generation with jetting and impinging jetting at different gas velocity in the nozzle (5–50 m/s). From the image analysis, it was observed that the deflector induces a shear stress, in analogy to a rotating blade but in this case the shear results from a high velocity gas hitting a static surface. The device was evaluated in a 0.5 m diameter 3 m high column. The McGill bubble viewer technique was used to compare the bubble size generated by jetting and impinging jetting. It was found that the Sauter mean bubble diameter reduced from 7.4 mm to 2.8 mm, when the jetting sparger was modified with the deflector. In the case of the impinging jetting sparger, 70% of the bubbles were in the effective range for flotation, while for the jetting sparger, only 10% were in the effective range."

"The polymetallic sulfide ore in Jiama county of Tibet contains 0.78% Cu, 0.046% Mo, 0.31 g/t Au and 17.9 g/t Ag in average. However, heavy loss of valuable metals was observed using high-pH process and Butyl xanthate as the collector. In this paper, the flotation was optimized through the adoption of a novel collector C-7, which is a mixture of xanthate ester and thionocarbamate. This collector showed better flotation performance under weak base conditions. The recoveries of Cu, Mo, Au and Ag increased to 93.24%, 84.60%, 78.13% and 75.41%, respectively, under 15 g/t of C-7 at pH of 8.0. The adsorption mechanism of C-7 was investigated by micro-flotation tests, zeta potential measurements, FTIR analysis and adsorption quantity measurements. Chemisorption of C-7 on chalcopyrite surface is demonstrated with adsorption density 3.8 times higher than on pyrite.INTRODUCTIONXanthates are the most commonly used collectors of strong collecting ability for separating copper sulfide minerals from gangue in froth flotation. However, the selectivity of xanthates themselves is poor to realize separation of chalcopyrite and pyrite whose floatability are quite similar (Heyes & Trahar, 1977; Chandraprabha, Natarajan, & Modak, 2004). High pH process with xanthates as collectors is proved effective in copper-sulfur separation and is widely used in treatment of copper sulfide ore flotation (Smith, 1996; Valdivieso, Cervantes, Song, Cabrera, & Laskowski, 2004). This method could get ideal separation results, but large amount of lime must be added, and could bring about increased cost, device corrosion and environmental pollution. In addition, there could also be high depression and heavy loss of associated noble metal such as Mo, Au and Ag. Consequently, a large amount of research has been conducted on substitutions of xanthates for selective flotation of copper sulfide ores under low pH conditions (Gholivand, Khodadadian, & Ahmadi, 2010; Li, 2010)."

Stirred milling of nickel laterites offers possibilities for improving liberation and selective size reduction of soft nickel-bearing minerals in laterites. Batch grinding tests were performed in a Netzsch LME4 stirred mill on siliceous goethitic (SG), goethitic (G), and saprolitic (SAP) nickel laterite samples (- 2000 ?m particle size) to evaluate the effect of stirrer speed, solid content, water salinity and grinding time. A fine mineral product (-38 µm) was used to evaluate the effect of selective grinding and Ni upgrade. The optimum grinding time for the highest Ni upgrade was 0.25 min, 0.1 min and 0.1 min for the SG, G, and SAP nickel laterite, respectively. A new feed (38-2000 µm) for each nickel laterite sample was prepared for batch grinding tests under the optimum grinding conditions. Upon grinding the 38-2000 µm feed, the - 38 µm product confirmed the effect of selective grinding and nickel upgrade. Size classification followed by stirred milling is a suggested process for Ni upgrade. The best Ni upgrade result was achieved on the SG nickel laterite among the three samples. The Ni grade increased from 0.85% to 1.37%, with 27.8% Ni recovery. Bottle roll leach tests showed that for SG and SAP samples selective grinding had no dramatic effect on Ni extraction due to the slow leach rate of hard mineral particles. Stirred milling of G sample increased the surface area of goethite, resulting in higher Ni extraction. Gravity concentration through a Knelson Concentrator was not effective in the further treatment of the stirred milling products either due to the poor operating conditions or due to the mineralogy characteristics of the feed samples. The energy requirement in the stirred milling was investigated. The first pass of the signature plots study is critical for the purpose of selective grinding, because the best result on selective grinding is achieved in the early stage of the grinding process.

Design and manufacturing of parts using hydroforming process require knowledge about material behaviour and tribological effects during hydroforming. Lubrication is one of the key issues in successfully hydroform the tubes. A Ni-based super alloy tube with 50.8 mm (2 inches) outer diameter and 0.9 mm (0.035 inches) thickness is considered for this research to study the effect of lubricants on the formability of the tubes. Hydroforming of a hollow compressor blade is considered for this project. A combination of press forming and hydroforming is employed to produce the part. LS-DYNA, an explicit dynamic finite element code, is used to model the experiments. Different lubricants are modeled using different coefficient of friction in the model. Predicted results for strain distribution at a critical section of the tube are extracted for each case to evaluate the effect of different lubricants on the process.
