Open pit mine plans define the complex strategy of displacement of ore and waste over the mine life. The objective of the mine plan is to maximize the future cash flows within the technical and physical constraints. Various mixed integer linear programming (MILP) formulations have been used for production scheduling of open pit mines. In the MILP formulation the slope constraints guarantee that all the overlying blocks are mined prior to mining a given block. Traditionally, the slope constraints have been modeled with cone templates representing the required wall slopes of the open pit mine. The overall pit slopes constructed by these templates are a function of the width and height of the geological block model. Therefore, the overall slopes are fixed in one bearing. This paper presents a general MILP model for open pit mine scheduling with variable slopes constraints. The methodology utilizes a directed graph to capture the precedence of extraction of blocks and pit slopes in different bearings. Depth-first-search algorithm was used to traverse the graph for constructing the slope constraints in the MILP problem. TOMLAB/CPLEX was used as the implementation platform to efficiently integrate the mathematical solver package CPLEX with MATLAB. A case study on intermediate scheduling of an iron ore mine over twelve periods was carried out to validate the models.

Dust abatement is possible on bulk materials, whether conveyed or stockpiled. Minimum (ppm) quantities of chemical additives can efficiently and rapidly control dust of conveyed substrates with no effect on floatation chemistry. Top coating of large surface areas can control surface dust and wind erosion. Environmental and toxicity impact must be considered in any treatment, especially on areas with percolation runoff, leachates, or limited containment. The most effective dust control is preventing release of substrate fines rather than trapping and removing air borne dust. Techniques to prevent release of fines from conveyed substrates will be discussed. Dust control dynamics are a very complex combination of solid phase physical and chemical interactions between the substrate and the fines. ?Smart Technology? products permit dust abatement of stockpiled substrates and tailing fields with no environmental impact. Using ?Smart Technology?, the dust abatement products remain active and can re-seal damaged areas. Efficient, low environmental and toxicity impact, dust control will be demonstrated through case studies where these principals have been applied.

"The Whitehorse Mining Initiative (WMI) brought together all of the key stakeholders in Canada's mining industry to develop a framework whereby the industry can meet the challenges that it faces into the 21st century. The WMI Accord7 which was signed at the annual Mines Ministers Conference in Victoria, British Columbia, on September 137 1994, touches all of the important issues that confront the industry, including taxation. IntroductionSeptember 13, 1994, was a historical day for Canada's mining industry. On that day, on the occasion of the annual Mines Ministers Conference in Victoria, British Columbia, the Whitehorse Mining Initiative (WMI) Accord was signed by the leaders of the five principal stakeholders in the industry: industry; government; labour; environmentalists; and aboriginals. The Accord is the culmination of two years of hard work and intense collaboration by these stakeholders. But, the Accord is not the end result. The Accord can better be described as a springboard to a prosperous future for mining in Canada.The WMI had its beginnings at the Mines Ministers Conference in Whitehorse, Yukon, in September 1992 (hence, the name of the initiative). At that time, the mining industry was well aware of the serious challenges facing the industry, including significantly increased competition for mineral investment from other mining countries, coupled with an atmosphere of uncertainty surrounding land access, environmental regulations, and taxation. "The property of Pamour Porcupine Mines, Limited, is in the eastern Porcupine area, about 12 miles northeast of Timmins. It covers parts of lots 3-6 (inclusive), cons. 5 and 6, Whitney tp., Cochrane district, Ontario. It is an amalgamation of the old La Palme, Three Nations, and Porcupine Grande properties.The first discovery on the Pamour was made in 1911. During 1911 to 1914 a small shaft was sunk on the Three Nations vein to the 200-foot level and a 100-ton stamp mill was put in operation, but only a small production was achieved. The property remained idle from 1914 to 1923. In 1924 some diamond drilling was done along the Keewatin-Timiskaming contact with some encouraging results, but the gold mineralization encountered was too low in general at the price of gold then prevailing to warrant further · work. The increase in the price of gold revived interest in the area, and the above noted amalgamation was effected in 1934. Options were taken and successively dropped by two large mining companies. Following this, exploration both on the surface and underground was started by Quebec Gold Mining Corporation, Limited. Diamond drilling in the early part of 1933 showed considerable ore in conglomerate and greywacke to the east. In the middle of 1935 Noranda Mines, Limited, assumed control and management. A new shaft was sunk and the property was ·equipped with a mill having an initial capacity of750 tons a day. This was subsequently enlarged to 1,500 tons a day.From the commencement of milling (May 16, 1936) to the end of 1946, 5,025,545 tons of ore having an average grade of 0.1327 oz. a ton ($4.64 at $35 an oz.) have been mined and milled."

High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) are said to be a good option in new grinding circuits. Due to their low energy consumption compared to other grinding systems such as SAG milling, there is a strong incentive to check their behaviour for certain ore types. With rising energy prices the operation will become even more beneficial in future. As published in the past, the HPGR is claimed to increase the liberation of the valuable mineral component within an ore. An investigation at the research centre of Polysius was conducted to substantiate the liberation behaviour in finish grinding operations. A pilot scale HPGR test unit (POLYCOM MAGRO) with a roll diameter of 950 mm and processing capacity of 80 t/h was used. Grinding tests were completed with a screen and a two stage drying air separation process (SEPOL). Analysis included standard screen analysis, fractional XRF and modern MLA technology. A technique was developed to oppose the amount of produced slimes (resuming bad flotation) against the positive effect of producing high mass fraction at flotation-easy sizes. The paper shows how effective the use of a dry grinding separation could be in terms of production of mass of liberated metal.

"Complex facilities which provide for the collection, management and treatment of effluents emanating from the Sullivan mine and concentrator tailings were made operational in October 1979. Key features of the system are the use of upgraded tailings ponds for the storage of up to 800 million litres of metals-contaminated effluents, a treatment plant employing lime in a high-density sludge process and a sludge-impoundment facility designed for maximum long-term environmental safety. The completed works are capable of satisfying a difficult range of operating requirements imposed by highly variable weather conditions, drainage flows and soluble metals loadings. Final capital expenditures for the project approached $10 million and annual operating costs are about $0.8 million.This paper discusses the Kimberley effluents treatment project and the major considerations in its development. The treatment process, major plant equipment and initial operating experience are also described.IntroductionCominco Ltd. has worked the Sullivan orebody at Kimberley, B.C. since 1909 and has operated a concentrator some 5 km distant from the mine since 1923. Over the last 70 years, in excess of 120million tonnes of ore have been mined, and production continues at an average rate of 6,500 tonnes per day. It is a well-known fact that the contribution of this operation to Canada's mining industry and, in particular, Cominco's development has been significant. However, this success has not been without some undesirable side effects.Unfortunately, the Sullivan is one of only a few major Western Canadian orebodies which may be classed as ""acidic"" in nature. That is, the primary economic minerals, galena and marrnatite, are enclosed in a siliceous host rock with abundant pyrrhotite, but with little or no accompanying alkaline gangue minerals such as calcite and dolomite. The unavoidable consequence of mining such an ore is that contact with air and water generates an acid mine drainage containing various soluble metals orginally present as minerals.This problem also arises in the concentrator's tailings ponds, which, in the case of the Sullivan, are two separate impoundments of different materials. The 1,100 tonnesl day of ""iron"" tailings are primarily pyrrhotite which is surplus to the requirements of a separate operation that produces sulphuric acid as an intermediate to phosphate fertilizers. Inert gangue minerals with only a minor sulphide content are the main constituents of the 1,200 tonnes/ day of siliceous tailings. Corresponding to the relative proportion of sulphides in the solids, the decant from the iron tailings is substantially more contaminated than that from the siliceous pond."

"In the last decades heuristic approaches based on logic rules have been one favored tool to control flotation units and plants on top of distributed control systems. Fundamental knowledge on flotation processes, expressed in reliable models, and programs to assure the quality of the information, contained in available measurements, are still insufficient to develop robust predictive control strategies. In this paper the idea of using simplified models, when a known disturbance is coming into the process, is explored. As a first approach, the set points of the froth depth and air flow rate controllers are estimated based on this model. Since these target predictions are only approximate, a conventional feedback expert system, based on logic rules, continues the task of calculating the set points of the distributed controllers, in order to decrease the gap between actual and desirable metallurgical targets. This combined actions permitted a fast response of the process to change the operation of the circuit when a measured disturbance is detected. This control system was implemented and experimentally evaluated in a pilot rougher flotation circuit, with three pneumatic cells, with froth depth and air flow rate controllers in each cell. Since the circuit is operated for the air-water system, a phenomenological model, with parameters estimated from industrial data, is fed on-line with real operating variables and virtual values, characterizing the feed (grades, solids%, particle size distribution), in order to predict the metallurgical targets (recovery and concentrate grade). Several cases are discussed showing the benefits of this control system and the possible improvements to work on. INTRODUCTIONToday, large size mechanical flotation cells of 100 to 300 m3 are used in rougher operation in different flotation industrial plants, in Chile and worldwide. However, in spite of the advances in fundamental research and the notable growing in equipment size, with more complete instrumentation systems, there are still a lack of reliable data for industrial flotation modeling and simulation to advance in better control systems design."

"The use of hydraulically delivered classified tailings sands to provide ground support in large mining operations is still widespread despite recent developments of alternate backfilling methods and materials. The major disadvantages of the use of hydraulic fill are the costs and risks associated with slurry delivery. The main risk is that of bulkhead failure resulting from sand liquefaction due to insufficient operational control or due to dynamic loading from earthquake or rockburst. That risk may be eliminated by the pouring of a stiff cemented sand plug in the base of each stope prior to continuous fill pouring in that stope. An additional advantage of cemented plugs is that massive bulkheads are not needed. Instead, a temporary (removable and reusable) bulkhead can be used for plug forming.Physical model studies of fill pressures on a temporary bulkhead were carried out in a 3 m radius centrifuge facility. Fill pouring in-flight was carried out in order to model prototype stress paths. The results indicate that the average bulkhead pressure is likely to be less than 10 kPa under normal operating conditions and less than 20 kPa under the poorest anticipated operating conditions which include smooth walls, high slimes content and high water-content slurries. A portable bulkhead consisting of a central core and a surrounding sealing bladder was modelled and found to be effective. The use of different sizes of cores allowed the stress distribution adjacent to these bulkheads to be evaluated."

"IntroductionAn integrated Truck Management Information System (Truck MIS) evolves as seemingly separate functions combined to yield a single homogeneous result / product. The concept of a computer integrated Truck MIS includes truck dispatch, truck maintenance management and truck weighing.A truck management system is only as good as the information / data bases input to it. The concept of an integrated system works best with automated data gathering. Automated data gathering provides timely and normally, the most accurate historical information/data bases. Data bases are, however, historical, which is a problem to be overcome in a computerized truck management information system, especially in regards to a truck dispatch system as loading sites / loading conditions and some dump site conditions continually change. As these changes occur, data base s must change as well, and thus the need for the continual update of data bases that the computer uses for a Truck MIS.For a truck dispatch system to achieve reliability / viability, dispatch decisions need to revolve around real time data gathered in an automated way. Integration of all truck management function s through automated data gathering lead s to the best over-all system.An integrated system is a combination of many different factors and is only as good as each factor / building block put in the system. With the proper building blocks, an integrated Truck MIS is very feasible - an MIS System that includes weighing, time and motion study, truck maintenance and maintenance management, as well as truck dispatch.Truck MISAn integrated Truck MIS provides for truck dispatch as the ultimate end result, a truly automated /integrated truck dispatch system (to function non-operator-dependent). The following comprises its central building blocks:-Time.- Haul Cycle Segments.Truck Status, i.e. Load on truck,- being loaded,- loaded,- unloaded,- in service,- out of service.- Vehicle Location.Loading Equipment Status.- in service,- out of service.Optional- distance travelled in each haul segment.With this data provided on a non-operator dependent basis, it is possible to build good data bases so a computer can make truck dispatch decisions. "This paper describes the investigation of a large, progressive slope failure on the southeast wall of the east pit at Highmont Mine, British Columbia Geotechnical investigation s consisted of geological and structural mapping, assessment of blasthole drilling records, review of rock core information, slope movement monitoring and back analysis of various possible failure modes. Climate records and mining history were also assessed to determine their relationship to slope movement.Analysis of movement monitoring records and geotechnical information indicates that the failure is deep seated. The upper portion of the failure surf ace occurs along clay filled discontinuities. The lower portion of the failure surf ace appears to occur through the highly altered rock mass. High groundwater pressures and mining at the toe of the slope are documented to have had a major influence on stability at various times during the failure. Stability analyses results are presented and possible remedial measures are discussed.IntroductionHighmont Mine is located near Logan Lake in the Highland Valley approximately 50 km southwest of Karnloops, British Columbia (Fig. I). Mining of the porphyry copper and molydenum ore bodies began in 1980. In May, 1983, when mining in the east pit had progressed to a depth of about 60 m (200 feet) , a failure (designated the Southeast Failure) began to develop in the southeast corner of the east pit. Subsequent mining to a depth of 110m (360 feet) was accompanied by frequent and substantial slope movements involving between 500000 and I 000 000 m3 of rock . The slope was monitored extensively to assess short-term movement trends for operational safety. Geological mapping, core logging and rock mechanics testing were used in conjunction with the long-term monitoring information to determine the failure mechanism, conduct stability analyses, assess the effects of instability on pit design and enable design and installation of remedial measures."

Demands for increased grinding production, lower-grade are and limited capital have resulted in ever larger grinding mills, some as large as 36ft (/1 m) in diameter and 12,000 hp (8,950 kw). The result is often f ewer machines per plant, with a greater dependence on each machine. To meet these reliability requirements, manufacturers of mills, drives, castings and other components have had to be innovative and creative in their design. Only by thorough review of past designs and practices and by model studies confirmed in field tests can the manufacturer have full confidence in the product. Because of the great interest in large mills, a short review of larger machines is presented. This discussion covers material feeding, bearings, the rotating element, drive trains and material discharge.

"The Edmonton region accounted for 40% of Alberta's sand and gravel production in 1981 (about 12 million m3). Most of this production was by commercial operations (75%) for use in essential public works projects (64% in road and asphalt production).Although the Alberta Geological Survey delineated 1157 million m3 of gravel, a number of areas are considered to be in short supply. An econometric model was used for forecast demand in the region. Predictions, based on this forecast and estimated supply, are that 15% of the region's gravel and 3% of the sand will be consumed by the year 2010.The City of Edmonton is the largest consumer of aggregate in the region. Approximately 40% of the gravel in Edmonton's current supply area (about 55 km radius) will be used by 2010. These estimates are considered optimistic because the supply figures do not account for sterilization of deposits - some has already taken place in the region. If 25% to 50% of Edmonton's current supplies (one major deposit) were sterilized it would result in $1,000 million of additional cost due to increased haulage alone.Information on the value of aggregate resources, the location of sand and gravel deposit s and forecast demand has been made available to all municipalities in the region to aid planners and regulators in effective future use of this important resource.INTRODUCTIONAlberta is the second largest producer of sand and gravel in Canada at ab out 50 million tonnes annually. Value of provincial production exceeded $120 million in 1985. In Albert a, aggregate is used primarily in road and building construction (about 50% and 15%, respectively) and is important in such activities as petroleum exploration, oil sands development and the forestry industry.The Edmonton region (Fig. I) accounts for about 40% of provincial production and has a per capita consumption rate of about 13.4 m3 of sand and gravel per annum. Although Edmonton dominates, with approximately 50% of regional production going into the city, aggregate is produced in every county and municipal district in the region.Sand and gravel is essential to the current way of life in the Edmonton region. The resource is valuable and dwindling. The Alberta Geological Survey (a department of the Alberta Research Council) has collected information on aggregate in this region for the last decade which ca n aid government planners and regulators in pre venting sterilization and misallocation of this critical resource. This paper is a summary of that information."

"This paper summarizes work carried out at the Dome Mine to mechanize the mining of narrow veins of less than 1.5 m in width by the introduction of new mining methods and specifically designed electric LHDs.Extensive mining trials have been conducted using sublevel blasthole, modified Avoca, and resuing mining methods. The introduction of the Microscoop and the Jarvis Clark remote, radio-controlled scooptram has increased mucking productivity.As a result of this work, additional narrow vein stopes are now being prepared for production. In the future, narrow vein stoping wil lprovide a greater percentage of the total mill tonnage.IntroductionThe Dome Mine, which is owned and operated by Dome Mines Limited, is located at Timmins, Ontario. Production has been continuous since 1910 and in 1984 was increased from 1814 to 2721 tonnes per day.At least six distinct ore types have been recognized at the mine. In general, these orebodies can be broadly categorized into wide and narrow deposits. The wide deposits are approximately lenticular in shape and vary in width from 10 m to 40 m. The narrow orebodies consist of quartz and quartzankerite veins ranging in width from a few centimetres to six metres. The average dip of the veins is 65 degrees.Since the I970s, mining activity has been largely concentrated in the wider orebodies using highly productive open sublevel blasthole and mechanized cut-and-fill stoping methods. With the demise of shrinkage stoping in 1975, investigations were initiated to develop new mining methods and introduce LHDs - truly designed for narrow orebodies. These investigations resulted in test trials of the sublevel blasthole, modified Avoca, and resuing mining methods. Consultations with equipment manufacturers and suppliers led to the development of the Jarvis Clark remote, radio-controlled electric scooptram and the introduction of the France Loader Microscoop."

"Many deposits have a geological model developed early in the project stages, which is not always reviewed or modified as the project matures and production commences. Conversely, ongoing pressures, due to a combination of declining head grades, a push for increased revenue and a multitude of other reasons, leads to processing plant modifications, with the primary aim being to increase production. Often, the ore deposit knowledge is not sustained or developed during the operational stages to the level carried out during the prefeasibility and feasibility study phases. This results in the variability within the deposit being poorly understood and a lack of data and knowledge being available to support (and ideally optimise) operations particularly in an environment where the flow sheet has changed and ore feed requirements are complex.INTRODUCTION This paper presents a case study of ore deposit knowledge development and corresponding process plant operating strategy at the Ladolam Gold Deposit, commonly referred to as the Lihir gold deposit in Papua New Guinea. The gold deposit is located in a tropical equatorial climate on the east side of Lihir Island in the New Ireland Province of Papua New Guinea. Gold mineralisation was discovered in 1982, and was followed by a major exploration campaign by a joint venture between Kennecott (Rio Tinto) and Nuigini Mining Limited. The first drillhole was drilled in 1983, and after an extensive period of drilling consisting of 343 holes for 83,500 m, the final Feasibility Study was completed in 1992. The feasibility study was based on a Reserve base of 37.9 Moz in refractory sulphide ore, with gold extraction proposed to occur via whole ore pressure oxidation due to the refractory nature of the mineralisation. The Lihir Special Mining Lease (SML) was granted in 1995 to a new PNG company – Lihir Gold Limited, and Rio Tinto established Lihir Management Company to develop and operate the mine on behalf of LGL. Mining and processing of the deposit commenced in 1997. Newcrest Mining Limited purchased Lihir Gold Limited in August 2010, and subsequently completed a major plant upgrade including the installation of additional grinding, autoclave and carbon-in-leach capacity. Post commissioning of the upgrade, Newcrest has continued to increase throughput and production. A reinvigorated ore body knowledge development program has significantly assisted this process in identifying operating strategies for the process plant and delivering recovery improvement projects to address declining head grade and recovery due to increased stockpile feed and flotation circuit use."

"INTRODUCTIONThe low calorific value and the high moisture and ash contents of run-of-mine (r.o.rn.) lignite limits the utilization of Saskatchewan lignites to thermal power plants in Saskatchewan, Manitoba and western Ontario. On the other hand, the low sulphur content and the low mining cost make lignites potentially attractive for new coal markets, if suitable processes can be found for upgrading. Economic upgrading to a higher quality fuel would make lignites more acceptable for industrial and utility boilers.This paper presents a summary of the process engineering evaluation of coal upgrading technologies conducted in support of a study of selected lignite upgrading processes. The summary presents the relative advantages and offers specific comments on the application of coal upgrading technologies for lignites. ResourcesLignite comprises the largest fossil fuel energy deposits in Saskatchewan. The total resources of immediate and future interest exceed 27 billion tonnes. The measured and indicated lignite resources of immediate interest are large enough to last for over 200 years at the current production rate of about 10 million tonnes per year (Table 1).Saskatchewan lignitedeposits are present in three different geologic formations: (I) the Ravenscrag Formation of Paleocene Age in southern Saskatchewan; (2) the Swan River Formation of Lower Cretaceous Age in central north Saskatchewan; and (3) the Judith River Formation of Upper Cretaceous Age in central west Saskatchewan. The deposits in the Swan River and Judith River Formation are not currently of economic interest.The Ravenscrag deposits are confmed to four lignite basins, namely: the Estevan, the Willow Bunch, the Wood Mountain and the Cypress basin (Fig. 1). The estimated resources of immediate interest in the four basins are over 7 billion tonnes (Table I). These resources include lignite seams at least 1.5 m thick, at depths of less than 45 m.The average quality of lignite varies relatively little between the four basins considering the distance between deposits (Table 2). There is, however, a progressive increase in moisture and ash content, and a decrease in calorific value and carbon content as one moves westward from the Estevan to Wood Mountain and Cypress basins. The Estevan area deposits are of higher rank despite the fact that they are stratigraphically younger than the Willow Bunch deposits (Cameron and Marconi, 1979).In upgrading lignite to a higher quality fuel, it is important to know not only the average proximate and ultimate analysis (Table 2) but also other lignite characteristics influencing the product quality . For example, Figure 2 shows the effect of lignite HIC ratio on the product equilibrium moisture for hydrothermal treatment of lignite. It is apparent that lignites with a higher HIC ratio, or high liptinite content yield much better quality product for the same hydrotreatment conditions. Other examples of lignite characteristics which are important in upgrading include distribution of sulphur forms and mineral matter, maceral composition and degree of surface oxidation."

"Annual mining revenue can be computed by formulae relating metal prices, smelting schedules, concentrate grade and recovery to known ore grade and an assessment of core samples. Operating costs at different daily tonnages are related to orebody shape, mining method, milling process and general plant services. Capital costs are related to sizing of mining equipment, mine development, plant-site topography, climate and accessibility, plant services and personnel housing. IntroductionA crude guide to the average 1978 cost of mine projects is shown in Figure 1, but the costs of many mine projects have differed widely from the graphed average costs of $800,000 T0.6 for underground mine/mill projects and $400,000 T 0.6 for low-grade open-pit mine/mill projects.High mine project costs and high operating costs are characteristic of open-pit mines with high stripping ratios, underground mines with thin orebodies, mills with complex metallurgy, and projects located in isolated regions with severe climate, mountainous topography, and lacking access to existing roads, towns and electric power. When none of these adverse conditions prevailed, the mine project cost was typically much less than the graphed average cost. Virtually all the conditions likely to cause high capital and operating costs are known from knowledge of the local topography, climate or accessibility, or can be assessed by tests on core samples, as soon as the orebody has been outlined by drilling .A more accurate estimate of over-all project capital cost and operating cost can be made from a summation of items of cost after judging the effect of specific local conditions on each item of capital and operating cost. This paper offers guides in judging the effect of local conditions on the sizing and 1978 cost of specific items of capital cost and operating cost and operating cost of mine projects. When the specific items of capital cost and operating cost are totaled and measured against expected net revenue and taxes over the life of the mine using the net-present-value or discount-cash-flow methods, the result should show whether the mine project development is clearly feasible, doubtfully feasible or clearly uneconomic. If the development of the mine project is clearly feasible, or probably feasible, a detailed feasibility study by experienced consulting engineers should be commissioned before any financial commitments are made; but if project development appears to be uneconomic, the time and cost of a detailed feasibility study is not warranted."

A spectrographic method for the determination of small amounts of gold and the platinum metals in ores has been developed. By means of this method, an assay of 0.001 ounce per ton on one assay ton samples is possible, and by seecrrographic adjustments the sensitivity may be increased to 0.0001 ounce per ton. All the prec10us metals may be determined from one spectrographic arcing with an accuracy of about 5 per cent average deviation from absolute values, and the complete analysis of an ore or similar product may be reported five or six hours after receipt of sample.

Tax Notes examines the highlights of Mr. Lalonde's budget.IntroductionThe mining industry need not feel slighted in Finance Minister Lalonde's budget of February 15, 1984: the budget offered very little that would have an immediate impact of significance on any sector of the economy. Apart from some welcome announcements for the oil and gas industry to postpone the implementation of certain negative tax changes, the budget was surprisingly scant in terms of definitive tax proposals.While massive revisions in the rules relating to pensions, small businesses, commodity taxation and profit-sharing were brought forward, many of these proposals are set out in White Papers or other documents to be implemented into legislation only after further consultation. Canadians will accordingly have to wait for such promised benefits as increased RRSP and other pension contribution limits."

"A computer model has been developed for evaluating the performance of truck and shovel operations in an open-pit mine. The data required for describing the haulage network are simplified and shift startup and ending procedures specific to any given mine can be incorporated into the model readily . The model uses a FORTRAN-based simulation language SLAM and can be tailored to the conditions and practices of a particular mine.The model is used to analyze truck and shovel operations, evaluate different haulage layouts in the planning stage, or compare the expected performance of alternative truck dispatching systems.Stochastic simulation is used to model the random variation in time required f or the individual activities. This gives a more realistic representation of the processes under study. Simulation runs show good agreement with actual performance. The model is especially useful for examining alternatives in equipment acquisition , haulroad design, truck-shovel allocation and dispatching methods. The results of such simulations provide a sound basis f or making major management decisions.IntroductionTruck haul age is widely used in open-pit mining operations. It is also the largest cost item in the operating costs of an openpit mine, in some cases accounting for an estimated 50% of operating costs(1) , Truck replacements, which are necessary from time to time, involve large amounts of cap ital. Increasing depth of mining and consequent increase in stripping ratios require additional capital investment in the truck-shovel fleet. The sharp rise in energy costs over the last decade has also contibuted significantly to an increase in truck fleet operating costs . All these factors have led mine operators to search for ways to improve the effectiveness of the truck-shovel fleet, in order to lower costs and maintain a profitable operation in the face of declining markets and increasing world wide competition.Control of truck haulage in an open-pit mine is usually done in one of two ways."
