The Moab Khotsong Metallurgical Complex comprises a gold recovery circuit (Noligwa Gold Plant) and a uranium recovery circuit (South Uranium Plant). The metallurgical complex employs the reverse leach technology for the recovery of uranium; specifically, uranium extraction prior to gold using acid leaching processing. The inherent uranium species in the ore are uraninite, coffinite and brannerite. The slurry that has been subjected to the uranium leach is further subjected to solid-liquid separation to separate the uranium in solution through counter-current decantation and the solids (solids carrying all the gold), which are repulped and returned to the gold plant for gold processing. The uranium leaching process is critical to the uranium playing a pivotal role as a value adding by-product to the gold operation. The benefit of adopting this reverse leach process, for improved gold recovery, is that it exposes gold particles occluded within the uranium matrices and avails them for cyanidation. However, the drive for operational efficiency in uranium extraction must be weighed against the incremental operating cost against the backdrop of depressed spot uranium market prices. Over the years, efforts were directed at maintaining the benefit of extracting uranium to enhance gold recovery and simultaneously, optimizing the operating cost model for the uranium operation to remain relevant to the gold operation. The aim of this paper and the corresponding presentation is to give account of the uranium processing optimization journey embarked on over the years; namely, the operational trade-offs made in the process of ensuring that uranium continues to add value to the gold operation. These challenges were faced while striking a fine balance between processing cost and operational efficiencies against the prevailing depressed uranium spot market prices. Mineralogical- and laboratory tests conducted form the support basis for the results and observations articulated in the paper.

A new method has been developed for calculating flowing bottom hole pressure in a gas well, using as a basis the general energy equation. Fundamentally, the method shows that a plot of flowing pressure versus depth for a gas well can be represented as a series of incremental .straight lines, with the accuracy in-creasing as the number of increments increase. It is shown mathematically that for most cases the slope of the flowing pressure versus depth curve is essentially constant, in which case a single calculation based on surface conditions will yield acceptable results. In all cases studied no more than two iterations were required for very good accuracy, and in most cases only one iteration was necessary. Several example calculations are shown and the results are compared to other commonly used methods of calculating bottom hole pressures These examples show that the method provides answers which are at least as accurate as other methods usually used, and results in a considerable reduction in computation time.

"A framework for ventilation planning, with a focus on planning to the end-of-mine life, was developed for the Diavik Diamond Mine, Northwest Territories. This framework was successfully used by Diavik’s mine engineers to select a cost-effective ventilation plan that met the life-of-mine requirements. The framework achieved this result by reconciling the production plan with the ventilation plan. A set of design acceptability criteria was created and a PICK (possible, implement, challenge, kill) chart was used to quickly narrow down the generated ideas for detailed assessment and economic analysis. RÉSUMÉ Un cadre de planification de l’aérage, qui met notamment l’accent sur la planification jusqu’à la fin de vie de la mine, a été développé pour la mine de diamants Diavik. Les ingénieurs miniers de Diavik ont su mettre à profit ce cadre pour sélectionner un plan d’aérage rentable qui répondait aux exigences propres à la durée de vie de la mine. C’est en conciliant le plan de production et le plan d’aérage que cet objectif a pu être atteint. Introduction The usual laboratory methods of uranium analysis are either tedious, time-consuming chemical procedures or elaborate physical methods requiring sensitive equipment. There is thus an urgent need for a method of estimating the uranium content of ore samples by approximate analysis in the field. When a new property is being developed, it is desirable to know, with the least possible delay, the uranium content of channel samples in order to guide the diamond drilling and digging operations. Prospectors, too, require approximate analyses of their hand specimens to evaluate their discoveries. To satisfy the demand for these types of analyses, several field procedures have been tried. Two general plans can be followed. One is fast but will yield only a rough estimate. The other is slightly longer but, if done carefully, will give an assay probably within 10 per cent of the true value. For field operation it is necessary to strip the more accurate laboratory methods of analysis of all refinements because of the limited equipment and skilled techniques at hand. Most of the corrections normally applied, with the exception of that for equilibrium, will not alter the gross analysis to any appreciable extent. When uranium atoms in pitchblende disintegrate, they break down into other radioactive elements, and eventually the number of elements being formed is equal to the number breaking down. The ore is then said to be in equilibrium. Certain geological processes, however, such as leaching, may selectively remove some of these elements and hence reduce the radioactivity of the ore sample. The ore is then said to be out of equilibrium. The field analysis may then be in error by as much as 50 per cent since the apparatus is calibrated with standards that are in equilibrium. However, such a large error due to loss of equilibrium is the exception, and in most cases uncorrected field types of analyr.is are justified.

"Waste rock is one of the most abundant materials at mine sites and must be properly characterized and managed to limit acid rock drainage and other harmful byproducts. An experimental waste rock pile—part of the test piles research program—located at the Diavik diamond mine (Northwest Territories, Canada) was deconstructed and sampled to study the spatial variability of material properties. Bulk samples were classified based on the amount of material finer than 4.75 mm. Hydraulic properties of each sample were estimated and particle size distribution analysis was completed. The large volume of material and the large size of particles make it difficult to collect representative samples. Sampling techniques are often dis-ruptive to mining operations because they alter the structure of the waste rock pile or interfere with mine traffic. The convention at most mine sites to collect little to no information on waste rock material means that models and predictions of how waste material will behave and interact with the surrounding environment are based on general information that might not be site specific. This could lead to environmental damage or higher costs if environmental effects are underestimated during the construction of waste rock structures."

"SummaryThis paper is presented as part of a programme to show the steps taken by industry and others interested in supplying a solid fuel of constant quality to 'satisfy a consuming market. The paper deals with the general principles underlying quality control in coal preparation plants, namely, constant quality and close adherance to acceptance limits. It also describes how control of ash content is ""generally hampered by the problem of coal sampling .and the long duration of the ash analysis and how these difficulties may be overcome.Quality control can be effected in several ways. Thorough blending wll reduce variations appreciably, except those of long trend. The latter can be detected by automatic sampling and quick ash analysis. At present, under favourable conditions, a system of half-hourly ash determinations with an accuracy of 0.5 to 1.0 per cent can be realized, to the effect that trends with a 'wave length' of more than two hours cu be eliminated within the limits of accuracy of the ash figures. The general solution of the problem is a combination of blending, accurate sampling, quick ash determination, and statistical analysis of the pattern of ash distribution.The use of statistical methods of analysis, such as the t test and F test, is •discussed at some length in order to emphasize the importance of the correct evaluation of observational data if there is to be confidence in the validity of test results.General ConsiderationsCOAL, as a fuel, is too cheap for a long haul across the country. The creep behavior of three AJ62 alloys was investigated in a wide range of stresses and temperatures. Multi-level tensile creep tests revealed a distinct primary creep stage and a high stress exponent up to a value of 10. The threshold stress concept which is commonly used in combination with high stress exponents was utilized in the analysis of creep behaviour. This resulted in an effective stress exponent for the AJ alloys indi¬cating dislocation climb as the dominating creep mechanism. In addition, microstructural observations of the lamellar eutectic and of the a-Mg-matrix were carried out using opti¬cal microscopy, SEM and TEM. The creep properties of the alloys are discussed in the context of microstructural parameters such as phase volume-fraction, stability and solute supersaturation.

"Construction of mountain roads at north westerly Saudi Arabia is a difficult task in rugged terrains, where the rock masses are steep slopes, and full of geomorphological constraints.Werka descent lies at the north west region of Saudi Arabia. The Werka descent, constructed four years ago harmed due to rainstorm. The rock masses are metabasalt and metaryolite tuff rocks. The road is eight m-wide, surround by unsupported sharp manmade slope cuts, reaches up to 15 to 40 m height on both sides. Failures took place at both sides of the road, and blocked it. The road of almost 2 km long subjected to all modes of slope instability such as rockfalls, manmade slope failures and debris flows in the absence of the remedial measures. The very precipitous 40 m-high rock slope-cut along the road has no benches, backed by a natural slope of almost 80 m height. Both types of slopes suffer from rockfalls and slope failure’s incidents, frequently took place mainly in rainy seasons. The steep manmade rock slope cut is less than 1 m close to the road, with no ditches, form a potentially source area for rockfall’s hazards.Intensive geotechnical study includes utilization of the RMR and GSI rock masses classifications indicates that the rocks are fair to poor quality. The DIPS, RocFall, Swedge, RocTopple, RocPlane computer program, in addition to GIS and DEM image utilized to perform modeling and deterministic analysis, in order to suggest the mitigation measures for the natural and manmade slope cuts and rockfalls. The seismic coefficients of 0.1 to 0.4 taken into consideration in modeling processes. Input parameters to model the rockfalls and slope failure’s characteristics were studied such as GSI, block size; seeder points, locations of fallen blocks; slope angle, restitution coefficients, and slope roughness. The programs modeled the proposed location, height and energy of the rockfall barriers, collectors, and rock bolts. Two manmade slope cuts studied and modeled utilizing the integrated techniques were to eliminate the risk of slope failures and rockfalls through the construction of remedial measures, this is the study objectives."

This is the first in a series of Coal Technology Reviews being prepared in accordance with a recommendation voted by the Coal Division in session at the Jubilee Meeting, Vancouver, April, 1948, that the Department of Mines and Resources be requested to arrange for publication by the proper Government authority of a Quarterly Review' of Coal Technology, for distribution among those concerned in the production and use of coal in Canada. This recommendation was subsequently endorsed both by the Council of the Institute and by the Dominion Coal Board. Further reviews (or digests) will appear at intervals in the Bulletin, or will be published and distributed by the Board which, meanwhile, has undertaken to distribute reprints of Mr. Ignatieff's review.-En. * * * The fields in coal mining technology which are considered to demand most attention and study at the present time are reviewed under the headings appearing below. Mechanization In the light of the growing shortage of skilled miners and the necessity of mitigating constantly increasing mining costs, interest continues to centre in mining methods and applications of mechanization chat will produce the maximum reduction of man power. The growth of strip or open-cut mining, also, is a consequence of this trend. Mechanization at the face attracts most attention and the trend is toward developing and adopting machines capable of cutting and loading the coal in one operation instead of having the separate operations of cutting, drilling, blasting, and loading. In Great Britain, where longwall mining is? the general practice, the A.B. Meco-Moore machine still receives much attention, and accounts describing its performance over reasonably long periods have appeared in the technical press.

Resource development conflicts arise largely due to differences in worldview between those who support and those who oppose development. This paper illustrates how societies and civilizations with different worldviews produce different levels of creative and economic energy. A questionnaire was created to build a database of responses to test whether worldview and resource development are correlated. Factor and multivariate regression analysis determined correlations for respondent groupings. Results showed a positive correlation between the respondents\u2019 worldviews and their attitudes toward resource development. Correlations became stronger as the homogeneity of the sample subgroups increased.

Introduction The apparent commonplace, and prosaic, nature of building-stones, lime, cement, gypsum, and clay products, and many other miscellaneous non-metallic minerals, such as abrasives, barite, diatomite, magnesite, mica, slate, salts, etc., and their everyday appearance and necessary in our lives, has removed much of the glamour, romance, and speculative attractiveness so frequently associated with our gold, silver, lead, zinc, and copper mining ventures. However, it will be readily appreciated, with but a brief study of the thirty-five or more non-metallic minerals and products which are mined, prepared, or are known to occur, in British Columbia, that the 'industrial minerals' industry in the Province has an abundance of interesting technical problems, is fraught with speculative possibilities, and, as such, fully deserves much more technical attention than it has hitherro received. The brief notes presented in this paper show, in summary form, the magnitude of the British Columbia industrial and non-metallic mineral industry; outline in synoptically form the principal deposits of non-metallic minerals presently known; and indicate in a general way a few of the possibilities which exist in the Province for the expansion of the industry. For convenience in presentation, the assembled material has been divided into four sections: 1.-Sraristical information 2.-Strucrural non-metallic minerals 3.-Miscellaneous non-metallic minerals 4.-Non-Metallic mineral possibilities in British Columbia 1. -Statistical Information The writer does not propose to dwell at length on the statistical comparisons and deductions which may be drawn from the four tables which have been compiled for this section of the paper, nor is it considered essential, as the figures present a most emphatic story in themselves.

The composite cathode system based on Ce0.9Gdo.1O2_,5 electrolyte with a painted cathode was used for an intermediate temperature (500-700°C) solid oxide fuel cell. This cathode system was chosen due to its excellent thermal expansion match to the electrolyte, its relatively high conductivity (115 S cm-1 at 700°C), and its low activation energy for oxygen reduction (99 kJ/mol). It was found that the decrease of sintering temperature of the composite cathode system produces a significant decrease in charge transfer resistances to a level of 0.25 SI cm2. The conductivity measurements of porous samples produced values between 40 and 88 S/cm for porosities of 30-40%.

Introduction Following the discovery of high-grade deposits of pitchblende in the Great Bear Lake area of the Northwest Territories by Mr. Gilbert LaBine in May, 1930, samples were submitted to the Mines Branch for examination and investigation as to suitable methods of treatment (1). The purpose of this paper is to present, briefly, the results of the investigative work conducted on the ores and an outline of the methods developed for the extraction of the radium content and recovery of the by-products. The paper is presented in two parts. Part I gives a review of the history of radium production and of the principal processes used in other countries. Part II describes the work and gives the results of the Mines Branch investigation. Part 1-Radium Production In Other Countries Historical Outline Uranium was discovered in 1789, and more than a century later Madame Curie, while studying the physical properties of this element, observed that the ore of uranium exhibited greater activity than the pure uranium com-pounds she had prepared and traced the cause to the presence of a new element which she named radium. Eventually, research proved radium to be a disintegration product of uranium, and always present in uranium ores.

"The end of an era in zinc metallurgy took place on July 31, 1976 when the horizontal retort furnaces of the National Zinc Company in Bartlesville, Oklahoma were permanently shut down (1) . For more than a century, horizontal retorting had been the most common method of producing zinc in the United States; it was a thriving industry in many parts of that country, especially in the natural gas belts of Oklahoma and Texas. With the Bartlesville closure, yet another metallurgical process has become an object of historical interest for North American metallurgists. Although shrouded in controversy, the origins of zinc metallurgy seem to date back at least 2000 years. Pyrometallurgical methods with carbon reductants are capable of producing zinc from oxidic zinc ores, but only above the boiling point of the metal. Although slow cooling results in re-oxidation of the zinc vapour by air or carbon monoxide, quenching yields liquid zinc; some form of rapid cooling, either accidental or intentional, was likely used by ancient metallurgists to liquify the metal. Zinc metal found in Athenian objects of the Roman era was likely of accidental origin. The Romans employed brass extensively for coins and ornaments(2) , and this was intentionally produced by the calamine process whereby oxidic zinc ores were added to molten copper under strongly reducing conditions. Zinc appears to have been known in China and India as early as 1000-1300 A.D., and was probably smelted commercially in those countries from the 14th century. Although the early metallurgical procedures were probably inefficient, they were able to produce zinc metal in significant amounts. The large heaps of zinc residues with clay retorts bear testimony to an early smelting industry of impressive magnitude. It is estimated that the heaps at Zawar, India alone represent the extraction of 100 000 tons of metallic zinc(2) In the 1730s the smelting of oxidic zinc ores was developed in England using a vertical retort method. In 1788 a British patent was granted for making zinc from zinc blends (ZnS) by roasting the ore in a coalfired reverberatory furnace, mixing the calcine with charcoal and smelting the mixture with suitable zinc condensation. The English process was very energy intensive, however, and early in the 19th century the Belgians developed a horizontal retort process for the reductiondistillation of zinc that was more fuel efficient. This technique was gradually developed into what came to be known as the Belgian process, the forerunner of the ""modern"" horizontal retort furnace."

Introduction In the Twentieth Annual Report of the Mcintyre Porcupine Mines, Limited, for the year ending March 31st, 1932, the General Manager, Mr. R. J. Ennis, said: "During the period under review, the plans outlined in last year's report have been completed, and all operations have been centralized in the new plant adjacent to No. 11 shaft. The new mill went into operation on May 27th and attained its rated capacity of 2,000 tons per day on November 15th. The new shops, warehouse, change-house, and general offices were occupied on December 1st, consummating the change from the old to the new plant ... "Silicosis is now definitely recognized as an industrial disease, and progresses rapidly when associated with tuberculosis. In an effort to combat its prevalence and progress, the new change-house was designed to build up the men's resistance to this and other forms of disease. It provides for a complete change from underground to street clothing, with a shower bath and solarium treatment in the interval. 'Unfortunately, in almost every goldmine, a very small percentage of the work-men are not adverse to taking some of the high-grade ore for their own purpose. This, in turn, tends to cast suspicion upon the honourable as well as the dishonorable employees. The new change-house routine discourages this practice and eliminates unjust suspicion, to the satisfaction of all concerned with the Company's operations".

In this paper, the argument is put forth that the codes used for public reporting of mineral resources and mineral reserves have some significant limitations with regard to the information provided to investors on the short- to medium-term value of mining properties. Such limitations include a) failure to explicitly incorporate a time element and b) failure to state explicitly the quantity and quality of mineral product that will be produced for sale. A time-value framework for reporting mineral assets is proposed in order to overcome these limitations. The proposed system is based on two classification axes: a) an X-axis representing time in years during which the value of the asset is likely to be realized and b) a Y-axis representing the value identified by a mining or exploration company\u2019s activities. The potential benefits of this system are discussed, including the ability to incorporate factors, such as permitting and construction times, directly into the magnitude of the reported mineral assets. The proposed framework would assist in the standardization of mineral assets reporting in such a manner that they could eventually be more readily included in financial statements. "The purification of rare earth elements (REE) at mining operations is traditionally accomplished by multiple chemical phase-transfer processes including precipitation, solvent extraction, and ion exchange. We describe REE purification results with Solid Phase Extraction (SPE) columns that were developed to improve the speed and economy of REE purification. The SPE columns have the properties of enhanced equilibration kinetics, so that residence time of a few seconds will accomplish selective chemical transfers from solution phase to solid phase. We describe the separation of REE’s as a class from leach solutions and the further purification of REE salts. INTRODUCTIONHistorically the rare earths were first chemically separated from each other and purified by fractional crystallization. This slow, cumbersome, and laborious process was not suited to commercial production. Solvent Exchange (SX) technology was applied to the problem of separating and purifying the rare earth elements when it was determined in the late 1960s that there might be commercial uses for them individually. At the same time the very slow and expensive technique of ion exchange was applied either for ultra-purification of the desired “light” rare earths, or for the recovery and purification of the tiny amounts of higher atomic numbered, “heavy,” rare earths. Solvent Exchange (SX) has today become the standard for separating the rare earths across their atomic number spectrum. Whereas the separation of the light rare earths commercially may take 30 “cascades’ in a modern Chinese plant, the total separation of all of them from each other may take up to 80 such “cascades,” and is only even “practical’ with preconcentrated feed stocks, such as those produced in China by heap-leaching techniques performed in situ on very low grade radio-nuclide free ionic absorption clays.. Ultra-pure materials of all types are produced today by ion-exchange processing of ionic species already separated by solvent exchange.Hard rock deposits and refractory residues of tin mining and residues from uranium mining have been identified outside of China with very high ratios of dysprosium and other heavy rare earths to the majority lighter ones.
