"Le gonflement des boulettes d'hématite à été étudié à l'aide d'une méthode de mesure standard ISO ainsi qu'à l'aide d 'une méthode de mesure dilatométrique.La première méthode a servi à l'étude des boulettes haute silice (5% SiO2) dont l'indice de basicité (IB = CaO + MgO -i- SiO2 + Al2O3) a été ajustée soit à l'aide d'une addition de dolomie, soit à l'aide d'une addition de pierre à chaux, soit à l'aide d'une addition de ces deux composes. L'indice de basicité variait de 0.05 à 0.12. Les résultats de gonfle ment obtenus à 1000?C dans une atmosphère de 40 CO - 60 N2 ont permis de montrer qu’indépendamment de l'indice de basicité c'est la dolomie qui contribue le plus à diminuer le gonflement par rapport à la pierre à chaux. L'utilisation de l'indice de basicité comme critère de sélection des boulettes est discutée.La méthode dilatométrique a servi à l'étude du gonfle ment de deux types de boulettes préparées à partir de deux concentrés de fer et dont la teneur en silice a été fixée à 2.5% et 0 5%. Ces deux types de boulettes ont reçues les mêmes additions de liant en quantité et en nature. La détermination en continue du gonflement, à 950?C dans 40 CO - 60 N2, a permis d'une part de mieux cerner le niveau de réduction auquel correspond le maximum de gonflement et d'autre part de montrer que l’allure des courbes de gonflement est étroitement liée à la nature du liant. Une augmentation de la teneur en silice des concentres contribue à diminuer le gonflement des boulettes.Des essais de réduction de gonflement non isothermes ont été réalisés à des montées de température à 10 et 20?C/min. Les résultats indiquent que le gonflement déterminé dans les conditions non iso thermes est inferieur à celui obtenu lors des essais isothermes. On discute alors de la validité des essais standards de gonflement qui sont utilisés pour prédire le comportement des boulettes lors de leur réduction dans un haut fourneau."

COAL of sub-bituminous rank underlies much of the plains area of Alberta. This coal is geo-logically young, and occurs in Belly River and Edmonton strata of Up-per Cretaceous age. Generally, the seams are flat-lying, but in some areas they may dip as much as 5 degrees. The overburden, composed mainly of glacial clays and sand-stones, may vary in depth from a few feet to several thousand feet. Recovery of the coal has 'been by drift, slope, and shaft underground mines, and by open-pit stripping operations. Production has been obtained from a large number of mines, most of which have been relatively small and with preparation equipment limited to a loading tipple with screening facilities, and a picking belt where high-ash materials can be removed from the larger sizes. The coal has been sold for domestic and industrial space-heating, for production of process steam, and for power generation. In re-cent years competition from natural gas, propane, and oil has seriously interfered with the production and marketing of sub-bituminous coal, especially with the disposal of the smaller sizes at a realistic price.

This paper presents the history of uranium procurement and demand, and takes a look at future requirements. The three basic conclusions drawn are: (1) the productive capacity of former and existing producers whose operations may be profitably reactivated is insufficient to meet demand projected beyond 1975; (2) reserves in the $5 -$10 price range do not provide the flexibility to sustain production at the high rates required in the late 1970's; and (3) only higher prices can overcome these deficiencies, as this would provide sufficient inducement for the industry to explore for and develop new reserves and productive capacity.

This paper gives an account of the laboratory testing, plant testing and final inclusion of the two-stage sulphuric acid leaching process in the Milliken mill. Operational results for September, 1962, are presented, showing a uranium extraction of 95.5 per cent, with a saving of some 16 lbs. of 100 per cent H~S04 and some 9 lbs. of lime per ton milled. Methods for effecting further improvements in the process are indicated. HISTORY P RIOR to the incorporation of two-stage leaching, the process for the treatment of uranium ores at Milliken consisted of a single-stage sulphuric acid leach, followed by a solution recovery step involving washing in thickeners and two-stage filtration. The thickener overflow solution was subsequently concentrated and purified by ion exchange, and the uranium was recovered, by two-stage precipitation, as ammonium diuranate. "Vale has been actively evaluating new technologies to curtail diesel emissions. This paper discusses the selection, installation, operation, and evaluation of the MANN+HUMMEL SMF®-AR diesel particulate filter system to reduce diesel particulate matter emissions in underground mines. The system uses a sintered metal filter element, an iron fuel-borne catalyst with an onboard dosing system, an electric heater that uses onboard power, and a sensor-based control unit. More than 6,000 h of testing demonstrated that the system represents a breakthrough in the successful control of soot emission from light-duty vehicles with differing soot emission levels, exhaust temperatures, and duty cycles.RÉSUMÉ La compagnie Vale évalue activement de nouvelles technologies pour réduire les émissions de diesel. Le présent article discute du choix, de l’installation, du fonctionnement et de l’évaluation du système MANN+HUMMEL SMFMD-AR de filtrage des particules de diesel pour réduire les émissions de particules de diesel dans les mines souterraines. "Agnico Eagle LaRonde produces over 300,000 ounces of gold annually, along with silver, zinc and copper by-products. The LaRonde plant consists of a conventional SAG and Ball mill circuit, followed by flotation. Load management is imperative for maintaining stability in grind size and ensuring consistency of the flotation feed. In flotation, the mass pull profiles of the cells and reagent dosage rates need to be managed to maximize recovery, while maintaining product quality. This is achieved by controlling the air, level and reagent addition set-points across the circuit. However, disturbances such as feed size distribution, ore hardness and mineralogy make it challenging to maintain efficient control using traditional control techniques. LaRonde therefore worked to develop a progressive control strategy, targeting stability and optimization. This started with a year-long instrumentation upgrade campaign, focusing on optimizing the performance and reliability of plant-wide instrumentation. The process was then optimized, leveraging AwaRE advanced controllers running in closed loop with PARC modules embedded within the PLC. The installation of 8 PFC cameras in flotation changed the flotation operation from a level and air control based strategy, to one that controls mass pull. This new control philosophy has allowed the plant to effectively manage mill load, improving grind size and providing increased throughput with better flotation performance.INTRODUCTION Background Since 2015, Agnico Eagle LaRonde has been conducting an optimization campaign to maximise the performance of plant assets leveraging instrumentation and control. The grinding and copper flotation circuits were identified as the areas having the greatest opportunities and value proposition for advanced control. "Quartz Hill is a large, low- to moderate-grade quartz vein stockwork porphyry molybdenum deposit, discovered in 1974 during a regional stream sediment geochemical reconnaissance survey of southeast Alaska conducted by United States Borax and Chemical Corporation. Mineralization is localized in the upper parts of an Upper Oligocene (30 Ma) composite quartz monzonite stock which is emplaced discordantly into older Cretaceous to Early Tertiary terrain of the Coast Range igneous metamorphic complex of the northwest North American Cordillera. Subsequent fault-controlled, complex multi-stage intrusion, concentrated in the core of the Quartz Hill stock, produced successive pulses of hydrothermal alteration and molybdenum mineralization at about 27 Ma. Overall, the deposit is tabular and flat-lying and well suited to open pit mining. The 0.05% MoS2 grade limit covers an area of approximately 1500 m by 2750 m and extends to a maximum depth of 520 m below surface. Details of grade distribution show two separate lobes of higher grade material within the larger low-grade deposit.A ten year program of exploration drilling, underground development, sampling and metallurgical testwork led to a 1983 feasibility study based on a resource of 1600 million tonnes grading 0.127% MoS2 at a 0.08% MoS2 cutoff The large size of the deposit and its homogeneous grade distribution, typically showing gradual outward decrease of grade, makes in pit grade selection practical at several cutoff levels. Cominco Ltd. now reports a Probable Resource of 210 million tonnes averaging 0.22% MoS2 with a further Possible Resource of 1100 million tonnes averaging 0.12% MoS:z. At low molybdenum metal prices which have persisted for 10 years since the molybdenum price spike of the late 1970s and early 1980s, the Quartz Hill deposit is sub-economic."

Among them are the CuPRO MEX™ Brand of copper extractants that are based on the well- known 2- hydroxy 5-nonylsalicylaldoxime and 2-hydroxy acetophenoneoxime. This paper presents the laboratory and pilot plant trial results for SNF FloMin’s CuPRO MEX™ 3302 reagent, the equivalent to the wellknown ACORGA® M5640 extractant, and the composition of these reagents are described. Some examples of SNF FloMin’s CuPRO-Sim™ Advanced solvent extraction simulator are presented.

Data are presented on the global warming issue to reinforce the decision by the U.S to reject the Kyoto protocol. The evidence that CO2 is a problem rather than a benefit is inconclusive and will be discussed in this paper. Nevertheless, for economic reasons alone, the US steel industry will continue to minimize CO2 emissions (and the release of real pollutants) per ton of steel through energy reduction programs. However, relative to inevitable increases in absolute CO2 emissions from the utility industry and the transportation sector, future reductions by the steel industry will be inconsequential in the "big picture."

"Without conscious effort and understanding, a number of factors unique to mineral exploration often hinder building sustainability in host communities. These include the episodic and transitory presence of an exploration team in the community and the inherent uncertainty of outcomes— most projects fail from an exploration perspective. Experience in rural communities across Mesoamerica, however, has shown that it is possible to go beyond pragmatic philanthropy and infrastructure improvements to promote positive, sustainable outcomes in communities. Examples are provided of lessons learned and proven practices that improve quality of life and support a strong social license to operate.RÉSUMÉ Sans une compréhension et un effort réfléchis, de nombreux facteurs uniques à l’exploration minérale nuisent souvent à l’établissement d’un développement durable dans les communautés d’accueil. Ces facteurs comprennent la présence épisodique et transitoire d’une équipe d’exploration dans la communauté et l’incertitude inhérente des résultats – la plupart des projets échouent après l’étape de l’exploration. I would like to thank you for spending the time with me today to review the FLIR PathFindIR thermal imaging camera system: It is truly an innovative safety system that has the added benefit of offering increased efficiency Our company the Winsted Group, specializes in mobile video systems that are fully customizable to address standard and unique operational requirements in a variety of industries from heavy equipment cameras to police and military digital recording systems, high end video camera systems are a hallmark of Winsted?s product line. The use of thermal imaging camera systems to enhance mobile safety is a relatively new concept as it relates to their use in both transportation and heavy equipment operation. This technology, like so many before it, has been adopted for civilian use from its military roots. The identification of enemy combatants through their heat signature has given our troops a decisive edge in military operations in total darkness Likewise, the ability to discern people and objects that give off heat is a significant step forward in collision and accident avoidance. The PathFindIR camera system that I am demonstrating today is so advanced that it cannot be exported outside of continental North America without a US government approved export license I would like to commence my presentation with a short video clip that discusses the technology associated with the FLIR PathFindIR Thermal Imaging camera systems. The video demonstrates the operational effectiveness of thermal imaging camera systems installed on a vehicle operating on the roadway at night, of course there are definite parallels to use in a mining environment, primarily the fact that lighting is limited and the chance for vision limiting dust is ever present. We are, of course more concerned with personnel safety in our mines than encountering wildlife on the roadside. From the same perspective, the transport driver is just as concerned with encountering a stalled vehicle as our mine truck operators are with other mine traffic.

A core sample for this study was taken from the sulphide ore of the Geco Mine. The subsequent research was based on the assumption that a part of the scattering of strength-grade data could be correlated with variations in the chemical and/or mineralogical compositions of the samples. The results demonstrate clear relationships between strengths in tension and compression and the zinc-iron contents of the rocks.

"In carrying out a geotechnical survey of a proposed gas pipeline route from the Arctic Islands south to Longlac, Ontario, the Polar Gas Consortium contracted the drilling of several hundred 2- to 2D-m-deep boreholes in drift and bedrock. Samples from these holes were made available to the Geological Survey of Canada, where they were subjected to stratigraphic and trace-element geochemical analyses. The geochemical characteristics of the clay and sand-sized heavy mineral fractions of till samples from these boreholes have been summarized in a series of geochemical profiles.From the proposed pipeline terminus at Longlac northward to the vicinity of God's River in Manitoba, tills contain significant amounts of Paleozoic carbonate rocks and Proterozoic sedimentary rocks derived from the Hudson Bay basin and lowlands. Within this section, two sites were enriched in base metals, indicating the possibility of local mineralization of possible economic interest.From God's River northward to Seal River, Manitoba, no evidence of local mineralization was noted. The heavy mineral fractions of the tills are universally enriched in Mn-rich siderite thought to originate on or in the Paleozoic section of the Hudson Bay lowlands.From Seal River northward to Thelon River, near Baker Lake, tills contain only components originating west of the Hudson Bay sedimentary basin. Near the Keewatin-Manitoba border, all till is enriched in uranium, which probably originates in the ""young"" porphyritic granites underlying much of the region, and produces a distinctive airborne radiometric anomaly.At the Thelon River, multiple till sections are variously enriched in Cr, Ni, U, Cu and Mo in the vicinity of a distinctive aeromagnetic anomaly.From Thelon River northward, several coincident zones of chromium and uranium enrichment are found where the line of boreholes crosses east-west-striking belts of volcanic, ultramafic and sedimentary rocks of the Prince Albert Group.The results of this study indicate that till tends to have characteristic element associations or concentrations over each of several broad regions along the pipeline route. These are related both to large-scale bedrock associations and to largescale effects of glacial dispersal. In addition, the samples, collected more or less at random with respect to local bedrock geology, have intersected several small-scale geochemical anomalies that appear to be related to zones of mineralization of possible economic interest."

Tower crane layout (TCL) is a typical construction site layout (CSL) problem, which is suitable for a wide range of work assignments and site conditions. Tower crane is one of the key facilities for vertical and horizontal transportation of materials, especially for heavy prefabrication units such as steel beams, ready mixed concrete, prefabricated elements and large panel formwork such as machinery and equipment, and a wide variety of other building materials within a construction site. However, it is a difficult combinatorial optimization problem to determine the locations of tower cranes with materials quantity supply and demand for engineers. Swarm intelligence (SI) was very popular and widely used in many complex optimization problems which was collective behaviour of social systems such as honey bees (bee algorithm, BA) and birds (particle swarm optimization, PSO). This study applied a hybrid swarm algorithm namely particle bee algorithm (PBA) based on a particular intelligent behaviour of honey bee and bird swarms by integrates theirs advantages. This study compares the performance of PBA with BA and PSO for a proposed hypothetical construction engineering of TCL with materials quantity supply and demand problem. Results show that PBA performs better performance than the mentioned algorithms on a proposed hypothetical TCL problem.

Denison Mines Limited has been processing uranium ore in the Elliot Lake area for the past 20 years. As the original concept of uranium processing has been modified somewhat over this period, the present paper will describe the current recovery practices at the Denison mill from crushing through concentrate drying and packing . Special emphasis will be placed on the leaching, ion exchange and precipitation sections of the process, with consideration being given to the entire circuit. Descriptions will be given of equipment now being used and control strategies will be discussed.

"RÉSUMÉOn discute les principales sources de dilution au cours d’une exploitation souterraine. Les différentes définitions de la dilution en usage sont analysées. Une nouvelle méthodologie de calcul simplifiée et facile à utiliser dans la pratique minière est présentée. Cette méthodologie permet de remplacer les différentes expressions analytiques en usage par les deux facteurs de dilution seulement : un «facteur de dilution planifiée» lié à la sélectivité d’abattage au niveau de la planification minière et un «facteur de dilution additionnelle » permettant de juger de l’efficacité du contrôle de terrain et de la dilution pendant l’exploitation souterraine. L’application de cette méthodologie donnerait un outil nécessaire aux niveaux de la planification, du suivi des travaux d’exploitation et d’éventuelles études comparatives des coûts entre les différentes situations minières.ABSTRACTThe principal sources of dilution during underground evaluation and mining are discussed, then definitions of ore dilution currently in use are analyzed. These definitions vary depending on the authors. A new ore dilution evaluation methodology is proposed, replacing the ten different analytical expressions by only two: the planned dilution factor related to the stoping selectivity, done at the mine planning level, and the additional dilution factor related to the efficiency of the dilution control measures during stoping operations. The conclusion shows that the use of this methodology would be a definitive asset in planning, in stoping operations follow-up, and in future costs comparison studies between mining operations."

"Nuclear explosions are currently being planned for use in oil and gas production, the recovery of oil from oil shale, gas storage and copper leaching. The current status of each of these projects is discussed, with emphasis on the economics of each application. The first commercial application of nuclear explosives will be in gas stimulation. Project Gasbuggy will be rapidly followed by two additional shots, also related to gas production. These three events, each in a different formation, will be described in this paper with a discussion on their significance to the world's oil and gas industry. The use of nuclear explosives in oil and gas stimulation should be a standard accepted practice within a few years. Calculations based on explosions in media such as tuff, alluvium, granite and dolomite predict large increases in productivity when nuclear devices are used in tight, thick formations. The broken-up rock resulting from the explosion becomes the new well bore, with a production rate of six to twelve times that of a normally completed well.Also included in the paper is a discussion of the real or possible problems associated with nuclear explosive engineering. The only major foreseeable problem is the seismic shock wave. This limits the size of explosive which can be used near important surface structures. A discussion is included on the radiation problem, which we believe to be largely psychological in the case of contained explosions."

INTRODUCTION THE electrical system associated with the mining development of the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company, Limited, at Flin Flon, Manitoba, may be conveniently divided into three main parts, namely, the Island Falls power plant, the transmission line, and the distribution systems at the mine and metallurgical plants. For a description of the Island Falls power plant and the transmission line, the reader is referred to the paper, to be presented at this meeting, by R. W. Davis and M.F. Huffaker (1). The transmission line and sectionalizing combinations are shown diagrammatically in Figure 1. The present paper deals with the distribution systems at the Flin Flon mine and metallurgical plants. THE FLIN FLON DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM In the high-tension sub-station at Flin Flon, each incoming 110 kv. line is provided with manually operated, gang-type disconnecting switches. Each line is connected to Canadian General Electric type F.H.K. 39-60B-F.2 T.P.S.T. 110 kv. 400 amp. oil circuit breakers, each provided with M.K.4 centrifugal motor-operated closing mechanism. Gang-type disconnecting switches are installed on each side of incoming line breakers, and a complete ring bus system is formed through station tie breaker, which is' further provided with gang-type disconnecting switches on either side. The?bus tie breaker is of Canadian Westinghouse design, type G.22B, 110 kv., 400-amp., solenoid-operated. All three breakers are provided with bushing-type current transformers, and the two line breakers are further equipped with bushing-type potential devices. Oxide film lightning arresters (121 kv.) are installed on each incoming line and are located outside the station. Each line is further provided with interlocked gang-operated ground disconnecting switches. All disconnecting switches are mechanically connected to auxiliary switches, which provide pilot service to indicating lamps in the remote-control room, located in a separate building.

An historical background is presented to provide a basis for the lack of normally expected developmental effort over the first 20-25 years of viable zirconium production operations. This is followed by a description of developing technology, which is the result of years of research and piloting effort directed to the development of a more economical method to produce high-grade metallic zirconium. It is predicted that many of the process improvements described will have a significant impact on future zirconium production methods and consequently on future prices and markets.
