Currently, mining in Australia underpins the economic vitality of the nation, generating massive revenue from commodity exports and providing substantial infrastructure and employment. In addition, it is predicted that mining related services will in the future develop a global market of their own that could eventually grow to rival, in value, the export trade in mineral commodities. There is however little room for complacency. In the short- to medium-term, escalating, vigorous competition can be expected from many previously underdeveloped countries that are reforming their own mining and mineral export industries. In addition, most mining companies are facing a modem-day renaissance in terms of new expectations, changing social norms, evolving employee relations and statutory obligations. Thus, along with whatever promise the future might hold, the mining industry is currently being subjected to a growing number of largely unprecedented problems and pressures, both economic and social, that are both highly complex and demanding. In particular, it remains a matter of on-going concern that relations between mining companies and their employees still, in spite of recent reforms, continue to constrain productivity, perpetuate inefficiencies, affect quality of work life and retard progress towards mutually beneficial goals and achievements. If mining in Australia is to attain and hold on to a commanding position on the global scene, then further changes will clearly need to be made. Realisation of this appears to be growing, with most mining companies having attempted in recent years to improve workplace culture. Based on a wide ranging study, this paper presents an overview of what has been learned to-date with regard to the `people factor' when it comes to implementing and progressing positive change and reform in mining. From this, a number of practical suggestions, arising from hard won lessons and experiences in the field, are offered. Attention to the nine `key principles' given should help to ensure that many of the common problems encountered to-date with change and reform in the mining industry are in future avoided or at least minimised.

The past decade has seen a great increase in activity in deep seismic reflection profiling of the continental crust. Some 20 countries have conducted field experiments and the total length of deep seismic profiles surveyed to date is approximately 25,000 km. This total is very large compared to the quantity of such data that existed previously, but very small compared to the total length of seis- mic profiles of the shallow crust carried out for petroleum exploration, which some- times has exceeded 600,000 km on land in one year alone and 1,600,000 km/yr on land and sea. Furthermore, 25,000 km of seismic pro- filing corresponds to exploration of only a tiny fraction of the total volume of the entire continental crust. Thus at this stage of development of the subject, one must be wary of generalizations that are based on these limited data and then ex- tended in scope to include the crust everywhere. The state of the subject is such that virtually every new seismic line reveals totally unexpected seismic fea- tures, a sign that the subject is in its major discovery phase and a warning to the generalizers. Nevertheless, in addition to much new information on deep crustal structure in specific locations, some broad consequences of application of this powerful geophysical technique to a region of the earth not pre- viously explored in this manner are be- coming clear. One is that, as seismic data on the deep continental crust become more abundant and more revealing of complexi- ties, the deep crust can be far better re- lated to rocks at the surface. Conse- quently, the geological style of reason- ing is now being extended from its normal domain of the near-surface to include the deepest crust in a comprehensive story of the evolution of the continents. This change is a subtle but important one and is evident, for example, in some cross sec- tions of the North American Transect Pro- gram, which show surface geology extended in a consistent, though speculative, manner to the top of the mantle. Many underground mining methods rely on blasted rock moving under gravity to report to extraction points. Mining of orebodies dipping between 20 - 45 degrees poses a unique challenge for mining engineers in that a dip angle in this range will not allow the movement of broken ore down the footwall to the mucking horizon utilising gravity. This is more so in cases where the natural angle of repose of the rock is less than the dip of the orebody. Hence, innovative mining systems are necessary to mine this type of orebodies. In Australia, the method of uphole retreat panel stoping is commonly used to extract orebodies in the dip range of 20 - 45 degrees and thickness range of 5 - 15 m. In the Zambian Copperbelt a method called continuous retreat updip stoping is used for orebodies with similar dips and thicknesses. The mechanised form of this mining method has potential for application in the metalliferous mining industry in Australia. In this study a comparison is made between mechanised updip (MUDS) and transverse retreat stoping (TRS) methods. A hypothetical nickel sulphide orebody located in Western Australia is used as case study. The net present value for mechanised updip stoping is seven per cent higher than that of transverse retreat stoping based on the assumptions applied. Initial results of this study indicate that mechanised updip stoping can be adopted for Australian mining conditions. However, lack of significant local experience with the method is often cited as a reason for not adopting it even in situations where it is clearly the best option.

In late 1987 it was recognised that column flotation might have potential for improving the grade of the zinc concentrate produced at Pasminco's South Mine in Broken Hill. Intermittent test work was carried out during 1988 using a 90 mm diameter by 6 m high perspex column, built and initially operated by staff from CRA Advanced Technical Development. This column was found to have insufficient retention time so, during the first half of 1989, Pasminco constructed and installed a 200 mm diameter unit of the same height. Extensive testwork was carried out using this column during the latter half of 1989 and early 1990. It was clear from the results that a grade improvement of between 1 and 2 per cent (absolute) would be achievable. The effect of column cleaning on overall recovery was not established with the same degree of confidence, so the proposed new circuit is to include one of the existing banks of OK8 cleaner cells as a scavenger on column tailings. The test work provided sufficient data for preliminary design work to begin in May 1990 and commissioning of full scale zinc cleaner columns is planned for mid 1991. This paper summarizes the results and describes some of the experiences with column flotation at the Pasminco South Mine.

Agitation leaching data has generally not been analysed to extract the maximum amount of information that is available. Analysis of heap leaching systems has been developing over the last five years to include the underlying rate determining process. This has been found to be diffusion control for all copper leaching; irrespective of whether they are oxide or sulfide minerals. Extension of the diffusion model has enabled better scale-up protocols to be developed. Acid consumption in copper heap leaching operations has been found to be a first-order chemical controlled system. The analysis of the data is relatively straightforward. However the interpretation and scale-up is not as direct as for agitation leaching. The differences in the residence time distributions (RTDs) are required to properly account for the scale-up between test columns and field. The leaching of oxide copper in agitated systems has also been found to be diffusion controlled. However, there are significant differences in the control mechanisms. Initially the leaching control is the supply of acid to the mineral surface. This is limited by the diffusion through the surface boundary layer and is thus subject to the level of agitation. Higher agitation provides thinner boundary layers and faster diffusion rates. Similarly, higher grade material creates a thicker concentration boundary layer and relatively slower leaching. Acid consumption in agitated leach systems is also a first-order system. However, the interpretation of the RTD is easier from batch testing to continuous multiple CSTR series plant operations. Altering the method of acid delivery can significantly reduce acid consumption rates. Predilution of the acid minimises the local acid concentration near the addition point and can reduce the consumption by up to 50 per cent. Modelling of the combined leach rate(s) and acid consumption rates in agitated systems allows comparison of various leaching strategies and selection of the most appropriate. Similarly, the model allows the identification of economic limits to leach recovery; where the cost of acid consumption is greater than the value of the copper recovered. From this analysis selection of residence times for agitation leaching can be determined. The modelling tools are useful in identifying optimum conditions for the leaching process.

The Mount Gibson goidmine is located at the southern end of the Retaliation greenstone belt within the Murchison Province, approximately 300 km northeast of Perth, Western Australia. Economic gold mineralization occurs in the upper part of a Tertiary lateritic surface; its ultimate source presumably being Archaean greenstones. Gold is present in the laterite profile over a distance of 4 km in four separate prospects, from north to south, Mount Gibson Well, Midway, Orion and Tobias Find, the two last constituting the Mount Gibson mine. The area has'low relief. A low ridge to the west of the mineralized zone is formed mainly of rubble with minor outcrops of mafic volcanic and intrusive rocks. The terrain slopes gently to the northeast, and the maximum relief, in the vicinity of the mineralization, is about 20 m. The weathering profile comprises, from the surface: (i) soil, windblown sand or colluvium (thin), (ii) laterite; hardcap (including ferricrete and lesser silcrete and calcrete) is overlain by loose nodules and pisolites, and passes downwards into a mottled zone of variably ferruginized clay, (iii) clay; mainly pale brown, cream or yellow in colour, but in places contains relic quartz veins or dark ferruginous zones, (iv) clay with fragments of altered rock; normally grey to pale green in colour but sometimes includes an oxidized iron-rich horizon just above the weathered/fresh rock interface, (v) bedrock. The complete profile varies from 10-100 m thick, averaging 20 m. Zone (ii) is commonly 3-5 m thick. Loose pisolites of this zone fill cavities in the massive ironstone left by former tree roots, and cover irregular depressions which may represent former stream courses. Samples, representing 3 m intervals down the holes, have been collected from cuttings taken from rotary drill-holes along each of four traverses; one traverse at each-of the northern prospects and two traverses in the Orion part of the mine area. These samples have been submitted for X-ray diffraction analysis and for chemical analysis for a wide range of elements. Bedrock lithologies have been determined from microscope studies of bottom-of-hole chips.

In general, modern mining companies all over the world have to face the same economic circumstances as any other part of the industry: considering the tough competition, production and haulage costs must be reduced permanently whereas productivity has to increase substantially in order to remain price-competitive. However, the imposed pressure also offers the chance for consideration of alternative mining concepts, the application of which can result in substantial cost savings and improvements in the quality of the mined material. As one of these alternative mining concepts, surface mining technology offers substantial improvements in productivity. It also influences aspects of haulage, such as safety and speed, in a positive way. The capability of selective mining ties in nicely with the production of small-sized crushed material, the granulometry of which allows the elimination of the primary crusher. Mine operators profit from reduced costs for the maintenance of their haulage vehicles due to reduced wear, a decreased likelihood of accidents and higher average transport speeds. Surface Miners can also be used to cut haul roads into virgin rocks and leave a clean and level surface behind, improving the quality of these created roads. Thus, it is even possible to use ordinary road trucks for transport in mines. The current paper outlines in detail the effects of the surface mining technology on mining and haulage aspects and reports on applications where substantial cost savings could be achieved due to the application of what is also referred to as æsimple mining processÆ.

Australian coal mines have spent considerable capital on dragline improvements over the last two years. This has included ~$30 M on UDD conversions, >$20 M on new buckets, boom upgrades, electrical upgrades, etc. This is a natural part of the response of mining companies to technology and replacement programs. Capital expenditure is a normal part of the ongoing success of most companies. There is however, a tendency for some people to rely on the capital alone to provide the ongoing improvements in equipment productivity. Implementing new technology through capital expenditure is only part of the equation in continuous improvement. For 80 - 90 per cent of the year, the operator controls the productivity achieved by the dragline. Variation between operators is huge. The average standard deviation in productivity is 12 per cent and maintenance impact is over 40 per cent. Robbins 2003, states: Contrary to what we were taught in grade school, we werenÆt all created equal. Most of us are to the left of the median on some normally distributed ability curve. Further, he states: The issue is knowing how people differ in abilities and using that knowledge to increase the likelihood that an employee will perform his or her job well. There are two options for reducing variability between operators; improving operator ability and getting the machine to take over what the operator is doing (automation). Dragline automation will be discussed, however, this paper will focus more on the æhuman factorÆ and how to establish a dragline with minimum variability between operators.

Pumping water for dewatering and water supply is a major component of electricity consumption at mining operations and hence is a significant contributor of greenhouse gas emissions. Pump systems at a typical mine site can be broadly split between above ground centrifugal pumps (generally used for water transfer) and submersible borehole pumps (generally for dewatering and/or water supply). In contrast to above ground pumps, submersible borehole pumps can be subjected to varying duty points (total pumping head and flow requirements) as a result of changing bore water levels and yields, particularly in mine dewatering bores. Typically, much higher pumping rates are required at the commencement of dewatering to remove groundwater storage and to intercept sufficient groundwater throughflow to achieve target drawdowns. Once target drawdown levels are reached it often only requires much lower pumping rates to maintain target drawdowns. Pumps sized to remove the large initial volumes of stored groundwater often end up too large for the lower flow rate required for æmaintenance pumpingÆ. This often results in pumps operating inefficiently, a problem which can be made worse when pumps are throttled to reduce the pump output to better match the reduced bore yield. Current standard operating practice places little emphasis on the electricity consumed by pumps, with the focus often being on minimising capital expenditure (æIf it ainÆt broke donÆt fix itÆ). Submersible pumps can have extended service lives of ten to 20+ years. However as the capital cost of a pump typically represents only five per cent of the life cycle cost, the vast majority of the life cycle cost is energy usage.Through the implementation of a regular review of the operation of borehole pumps, significant reductions in electricity use and associated greenhouse gas emissions can be achieved without impacting the dewatering schedule. In most cases, the capital cost of replacing pumps is more than offset by savings in operating costs. These potential savings become even more significant when considering proposed future carbon tax levees.This paper presents examples of the opportunities for significant reductions in energy, greenhouse gas emissions and overall costs that can be achieved for a range of dewatering scenarios.

The effect of blast vibration on highwall stability is a common concern for many open pit mines. Vibration in such a case is a typical near-field blast vibration situation. Vibration modelling in the near-field of a blast requires consideration of both the amplitude and frequency attenuation of waveforms with distance. Most existing blast vibration models are designed for far-field vibration and do not simulate the frequency attenuation and its effect on waveform shape. With the advent of electronic detonators it is desirable to quantify the effects of blast delay on the amplitude as well as the frequency of blast vibrations. A suitable modelling tool is proposed here. At present, a blast vibration model with double attenuations(amplitude and frequency) has been developed at Orica. The present model simulates the amplitude and frequency attenuations separately using different transfer functions. The amplitude attenuation is modelled according to the non-linear relation between the peak particle velocity (PPV) and the charge weight scaled distance established from the signature hole vibration. The frequency attenuation is modelled with the signal broadening based on KjartanssonÆs transfer function û a linear model for attenuation of waves. The model is capable of taking multiple sets of signature waveforms as input to improve the modelling accuracy of the wave propagation in the geology at a site. The screening effect of the earlier firing holes in the path of a later firing hole is taken into account on not only the amplitude, but also frequency attenuation. The present blast vibration model is suitable for modelling both near-field and far-field blast vibrations. It yields reasonable agreement with measured field data for the near-field vibration examples discussed.

The mining of an underground orebody requires development both in waste and ore before stoping commences. Regardless of what metal is being extracted, the waste development is minimised to reduce the cost per unit of metal mined. At the Western Metals Zinc Kapok mine site, reducing the cost per tonne of lead and zinc mined is paramount. Decline waste development costs can be minimised by methods such as increased gradient or reduced drive size. Ore development will also involve some mining of waste. The degree to which waste mining can be minimised will depend on the thickness and dip of the orebody. The drive geometry will also determine the percentage of waste within the face. It is by mining methods such as resue mining that selective mining may be used to maximise the amount of metal mined and reduce waste dilution. Resue mining can be used around a set of selection criteria established by the mine site. These selection criteria will determine how resue mining can be applied to the mine site. Selection criteria include firing times, number of headings available, acceptance criteria for percentage lost metal, dilution and most importantly operator acceptance. The single pass or two pass resue mining method should be chosen depending on the site acceptance criteria and selection criteria. The Western Metals Zinc Kapok mine site has established a set of parameters which accept the two pass resue mining method for the mining of the ore drives. The blasting results from a single pass resue method were reviewed during more recent trials in a single heading. Through a comparison of results, the parameters allowed the decision to determine the applicability of resue mining and its current form to Kapok. This paper outlines the parameters set by the Kapok mine site, reviews these in relation to the two forms of resue mining and examines the criteria which make this mining method applicable for Western Metals Zinc.

Mine planning studies of iron ore deposits are often based on resource models generated by ordinary kriging. Ordinary kriging aims for local accuracy to minimise the variance of expected estimation error but this is at the expense of reproducing variability of the original sampling data. Hence mine planning studies using kriged models are likely to underestimate product variability, and the required blending and stockpiling capacity to reduce variability to an acceptable level. Instead, conditional simulation models of the main chemical variables in iron ore are able to reproduce likely variability to be encountered during mining and processing. This approach is demonstrated in a case study of the Weld Range bedded iron ore deposit in Western Australia, with a comparison of ordinary kriging and conditional simulation models. Conditional simulation models suggest that, compared with the single ordinary kriging estimation, there is likely to be far greater block variability for iron and impurities, a greater requirement for stockpiling and blending capacity, highest variability in initial years of mining and less variability in later years of mining for deeper ore. The conditional simulations provide a more realistic range of mining outcomes for production of high-grade ore, which may be seven per cent less than in the kriged model, as well as for lower expected project net present value (NPV). In year one, the kriged model is conservative for NPV; however, in later years two to five the kriged model has higher NPV than most conditional simulations, suggesting expected NPV based on the kriged model may not be achieved. For improved decision-making in mine planning, a complete range of possible outcomes from conditional simulations of the deposit should be considered rather than relying on a single kriging estimation that may be an end member case in the range of possible mining outcomes.

Exposed, open pit mine highwalls contribute significantly to the production of acid mine drainage (AMD) thus causing environmental concerns upon closure of an operating mine. Four innovative technologies were evaluated under the US Environmental Protection AgencyÆs, Mine Waste Technology (MWTP), Prevention of AMD Generation from Open Pit Highwalls Demonstration Project. This project is funded by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and jointly administered by the EPA and the US Department of Energy (DOE) through an Interagency Agreement. The objective of the field demonstration was to evaluate the technologies ability to decrease or eliminate acid generation from treated areas of the highwall in comparison an untreated highwall area. The field demonstration was performed at the Golden Sunlight Mine (GSM) a subsidiary of Placer Dome US, located near Whitehall, Montana. GSM is an operating gold mine. The highwall at GSM was divided into five plots measuring 15.24 by 15.24 m and each technology was assigned a plot with the fifth plot being used for comparison as a background control plot. The four technologies were spray-applied. The applied in situ treatment technologies included: a modified, furfuryl alcohol resin sealant, utilising wood and agricultural by-products to coat the rock surface; EcobondTM ARD, a phosphate based process that forms a stable, insoluble compound, coating the rock surface; and two AMD passivation technologies, magnesium oxide and the Dupont technology developed to create an inert layer/coating on the pyrite, preventing oxidation. The technologies were evaluated using the following methods: ASTM D 5744-96, accelerated weathering of solid materials using a modified humidity cells; mine wall residual wall rinse sampling; microscopy; and core drilling followed by water injection testing. The following paper describes the technologies used for passivation of acid generation from the highwall, the field demonstration, and the testing results from the background and each technology plot.

The mining of iron ore is a high volume low margin business because the value of this commodity is significantly lower than that of base metals. The main metallurgical challenges in most of the iron ore projects proposed for treatment nowadays have been in finding the optimum flowsheet for the treatment of magnetite ores, mixed magnetite-hematite ores and even ores that have banded ironstone formations (BIF). The associated plant designs incorporate very high capacity milling systems to grind the ore down prior to magnetic separation and in being highly capital intensive requires substantial investment in mega processing plants with associated infrastructure to mill down the run-of-mine ore to the desired treatment size for upgrading.To minimise the cost of infrastructure, better beneficiation techniques and technologies are being sought to assist in reducing upfront ROM feed to allow for reduction in overall treatment plant footprint necessary in extracting the desired downstream product. This paper discusses such beneficiation techniques and advancement in technologies for the upgrading of coarse and fine iron ore utilising dense media separation (DMS), jigging, wet magnetic separation, dry magnetic separation, flotation and x-ray processing.Another group of iron ore projects involve the mining of hematite ore below the water table. Often the mined ore is wet and sticky. This combination requires high capacity processing of feed material utilising large scrubbers or attritioning units to effectively remove the slimes component present in the feedstock. The fines removed, usually below 1 mm, are then discarded in large tailings storage facilities. Approaches to recovering the saleable material contained within these fines will also be investigated in this paper. This not only implies possible reduction in slimes discard footprint, but also holds potential benefit in augmenting overall yield and recovery of hematite product.CITATION:van Niekerk, L M, 2013. It is now common practice to use substantial amounts of recycled water in mineral processing plants to minimise both environmental discharge and withdrawal of fresh water from often limited water resources. Recycled water additions to process water are frequently obtained from sources such as tailings dams, tailings thickeners and concentrate dewatering. It has been suggested for some time that addition of recycled water to process water will impact the quality of the process water and that changes in water quality may influence flotation performance. To date, investigations of process water quality changes as a result of water recycling have been limited and as a consequence there are very few data available to substantiate these ideas. Thus the impact of recycling on process water quality remains largely unquantified. Over recent years we have conducted water quality studies at a number of mineral flotation plants with varying degrees of water recycle. This paper describes the results of these investigations, including data which suggest that build up of salinity due to recycling while it occurs, is reduced by fresh water make-up. The fate of flotation reagents such as collectors, promoters, frothers and flocculants during process water recycling has also been investigated. Results show that process water concentrations of these reagents vary from plant to plant, but that, with the exception of frothers, most reagents are generally removed from the system through mineral adsorption. In general, the results of these investigations suggest that recycling process water will not result in continuous increase in solute concentrations as appears to be the commonly held view.The effects of changing water quality on flotation can vary. In many cases, flotation conditions can be optimised to suit the water quality, while in others, treatment of the water may be necessary to obtain acceptable plant performance.

It is indeed a pleasure to be here this morning to open the 4th Mill Operators' Conference. It is no mean feat to organise such an event and I would like to congratulate the committee for the work that they have done. I am sure that the Conference will be an outstanding success. I welcome overseas visitors and hope that they gain and share in the openness of this Conference. There is personal satisfaction for me to speak to you as a mining engineer addressing a large group of metallurgists and mill operators. I would have thought that it would be impossible for a mere mining engineer to inform a metallurgist of anything. I will desist from using such derogatory terms as "xanthate munchers", "bubble makers" and "glorified mathematicians". Terms of endearment as these may not be seen with much equanimity. Such is the warm association that the two professions have enjoyed over the years. The economic climate that we at present face is a major problem to all of us. I wonder how many people here come from mining operations that are in trouble financially or that are cutting back in one form or another. This is the recession that we needed to have. When the world's greatest treasurer can tell us that then we truly have a lot to fear. The present downturn can be seen as a normal adjustment in the cycle of our business. Yet the world does not experience such severe adjustments as frequently as we experience ours. The root cause for the regular adjustments can be placed at the feet of inflation. Until the politicians of this country of ours can come to grips with inflation, we will continue to experience downturns on a 5 to 7 year cycle. This, in my opinion, is the basic reason why we appear to experience more downturns than the rest of the world. We simply price ourselves out of the market. This takes about 5 to 7 years to be highlighted and then we need to make adjustments. However, this recession is worldwide. The adjustments usually take the form of redundancies, retrenchments and early retirements. What is the solution?

Light metals have great potential for application in the automotive and aerospace industries because of their excellent physical properties. The usage of aluminium, titanium and magnesium is limited by relatively high costs of production, associated energy costs and large ecological footprint. In the case of aluminium, significant improvement to the Hall-HTroult process is still achievable through advances in cell design, materials and process control. Alternative production processes, including carbothermic reduction and low temperature routes are also possible. Magnesium and titanium production are currently dominated by batch metallothermic processes and new process routes are required to develop these industries. Research at CSIRO, through the Light Metals Flagship, is currently focused on step change improvements in the production of light metals, aimed at lowering energy usage, increasing productivity and reducing the overall environmental impact. In this paper, the overall status of the existing technologies will be described, highlighting areas that are being developed around the world and at CSIRO.

Zircon is extensively used as moulding sand in the production of steel and high-duty iron castings. To achieve a satisfactory grade of zircon concentrate, the zircon particles may need ,to have surface coatings removed, as such coatings can hinder electrostatic and magnetic separation of zircon from associated minerals. Xn addition the presence of surface coatings on the zircon. particles can cause sinterins and fusion of the zircon to the east metal resulting in "burnt-on" sand or fritting of the casting. "Burnon" necessitates cleaning of the casting by grinding or chipping, which is expensive and results in loss of definition on the casting face.Hudson (1966) has pointed out ,that some coatings on mineral sands are lightly-adhering clays which can be removed quite readily by agitating the sands in water for a few minutes-thus their removal constitutesno problem. However, the heavy gingery coloured coating which adheres strongly to the surface of the particles in some deposits, and which has generally been considered to be a form of iron oxide (Baker, 1962; Hudson, 1966), cannot be removed effectively by attrition cleaning in water (Hudson, 1966). Such coatings limit the usefulness of these concentrates in the foundry industry.An investigation of strongly-adhering coatings on "ginger zircon" concentrates from the Yoganup deposit of Westralian Sands Ltd has shown that the stain consists of a cemented mixtvre of hydrated iron and aluminium oxides and kaolin minerals, and that it can be removed by a relatively low cost treatment.IDENTIFICATION OF THE STAIN BY XRDX-ray powder diffraction (XRD) patterns were obtained from small samples of stain scraped, individually, from the surface of hand-picked zircon and ilmenite crystals. These scrapings were mounted on quartz fibres and exposed to CoKa radiation in a 57 mm Debye camera. To avoid heavy fogging of the x-ray films, a substantial amount of the iron oxides was preferentially leached from the scrapings (before mounting) with an ammonium oxalate-oxalic acid solution (Rooksby, 1961). The Hemersley Ranges are located in the North West Division of Western Australia and extend, approximately, from latitudes 21¦ 30! to 23¦S and longitudes 117¦ to 120¦E. Their mean height above sea level is'. 2,000 feet, and they rise from 600 to 800 feet. above the gen- eral level of the tableland which extends south-east from the coastal town of Roebourne.. Mt. Bruce, the highest peak, is 4,024 feet above sea level. The ranges are intersected by numerous north-flowing streams, dry during the greater part of the year, which have carved deep gorges, and it is in these that the principal deposits of orocidolite outcrop. The presence -of the mineral was first recorded in 1917., but the deposits remained untouched until 1937 when reports of a strong market demand for-croeido lice resulted in considerable prospecting and mining activity, particularly in Yampire, Wittenoom and Daleis Gorges. . It was established also that the blue asbestos belt extended from Willi- Wolli Springs north-west to Millstream Station, i.e.,-over a.:length of 180 miles and a width of 20 to 30 miles. A number of attempts were made to develop aid treat the Yampire and Wittenoom'Gorge deposits from 1938 onwards, but, for a ,variety of reasons, none of these-proved successful. This company commenced operations at the Wittenoom Mine in 1946, with an output of 601.8 long tons of- fibre,. and later transferred tb the Colonial Mine about one mile to the north-west. The Lihir gold operation, located in the New Ireland Province of Papua New Guinea (PNG), approximately 900 km north of Port Moresby, was commissioned in 1997 under the management of the Lihir Management Company, a subsidiary of Rio Tinto. This management period ended in 2005 with Lihir Gold Limited (LGL) becoming self-managed. LGL is now the largest listed company in PNG and a top tier mining company in Australia. The focus of the operation since 2005 has been to take advantage of strong market conditions to increase cash flow while driving operating costs into the lowest quartile of gold producers. During this period production has increased through capital expansions, most notably with the addition of a flotation circuit, and through culture change and efficiency improvements. The next step forward for the Lihir operation is a major plant upgrade to increase production to an average of around one million ounces per annum by matching the ore processing rate to the ore mining rate. The key benefits of this project will be the addition of approximately 240 000 ounces per annum of gold production, the access to an additional one million ounces of gold and the ability to meet all stockpiling requirements. The Lihir operation has come out of the boom period in a strong position, is undertaking a major upgrade at a time when prices are low and labour is available, and will be positioned to take advantage of future opportunities as they arise.
