The concept of large trucks underground has been around for some time. While the road train concept is gaining momentum, there are underground mining applications where these trucks have not been suitable. Unfortunately few of the ægreenfieldsÆ projects that are most suited to the road train concept have come æon lineÆ since the underground road train was first introduced to Australia in 2001 so that the trucks have generally been adapted to existing operations. As at December 2004, there were 17 road trains operating underground in Australia, one being rebuilt and one under construction. This paper addresses the necessity for the mining industry to have an integrated ore transport system that starts at the underground load haul dump unit (LHD) in the stope production area and finishes at the crusher feed at the processing plant. Chute and orepass designs are investigated, as well as feeders to determine the best load and haul system for large-scale trucking. The paper also discusses potential developments in the large truck scene. The paper highlights the cost and productivity gains by introducing large trucks and associated integrated ore transport systems underground. While 400 vertical metres was seen as the limit of vertical hauling in the 1970s, one kilometre is a common discussion point for trucking limits today. In real terms the cost of underground trucking (including ownership costs) has decreased from $1.50 - $2.00/t.km in the mid-1990s to $1.00 - $1.20/t.km at present.

The alluvial gold industry of New Zealand is based on the placer deposits in Otago and on the West Coast. Production from these since discovery in the 1850's has been an estimated 480 tonnes (15 million ounces) of gold. Annual output has expanded continuously since 1980 and is expected to be over 2 tonne of gold for 1989.Following a historical review, the characteristics of typical operations, which use hydraulic excavators and mobile trommel units are discussed. Descriptions are then given of alluvial activities in Otago and on the West Coast.

As an Inspector of Mines in Queensland, my main responsibilities include the enforcement of the Mining Act 1968 - 1986, the Mines Regulation Act 1964 - 1983 and the Metalliferous Mining regulations 1985 to promote the safe and responsible exploitation of the States' mineral wealth. An important adjunct to this task is the offering of an advisory service to the mining industry. However, in the pursuit of my duties to this regard, I have sadly observed in some cases, numerous wrong doings and negative activities by miners which have led to their ultimate demise, not to mention that of others. Despite what I consider corrective advice, I have witnessed, again in some cases, disregard and blind pursuit for the wrong end. This then is a novel approach to get the message home in the form of a light hearted cartoon presentation relating the saga of an average Aussie battler entering the mining game unprepared, making the wrong decisions due to his own ignorance and the cleverness of others, leading finally to his and possibly others' downfall. It is not intended to insult any particular profession or group of individuals and only endeavours to impart to readers and listeners, the message of being prepared and alert when entering the gold mining industry. Even though the presentation focuses on the woes of a rookie alluvial gold miner, a similar analogy could be drawn with his hard rock counterpart since the basic issues that I have attempted to address are common. By no means is there a saga complete because there are many more traps a miner can inadvertently fall into and only time has prevented me from referencing them.

Epithermal deposits have been defined as the lower temperature end of a spectrum of hydrothermal mineral deposits and are inferred to have formed near the EarthÆs surface. The preservation of an epithermal gold deposit in an Archaean craton is rather problematic, especially when such deposits form clusters or groups as reported for the Pilbara and Yilgarn cratons. For two of the better studied examples of epithermal gold deposits in these cratons, Becher and Wiluna, the evidence that they formed near the Earth surface is non-diagnostic, and the epithermal origin appears uncertain. Despite the simplicity of the original definition, there have been numerous errors in classifying epithermal gold deposits. It is suggested that these errors are primarily due to poor criteria defining the group as there is limited evidence of poor observational science being the cause. The criteria being used to recognise epithermal gold deposits include tectonic setting, ore element suite and quartz vein textures. None of these are diagnostic of epithermal deposits and their link back to the original low pressure-temperature definition of the class is tenuous. There has been definition creep over time as new observations on potential epithermal gold deposits become accommodated within a flexible definition. There is some urgency establishing and then using criteria to reliably identify epithermal deposits. Distinction of epithermal gold from weathered gold deposits is an important step. Mining industry sees a comprehensive future in optimisation and process control. High resource utilisation is a starting platform when lower operational costs with higher rate of return are the target. Simulation is quickly penetrating the mining industry as a planning tool. A discrete event simulation helps to visualise the reality of a mine and the various mining processes, which typically include a fair degree of complexity. What-if scenarios can help to determine the impact of occurring changes to production. Understanding of critical points in the layout and resource allocation at an early stage can help to optimise the material flow. The obtained information may then be used as proposal or confirmation of the system applicability and economy. Simulation is a way to fine-tune and optimise the resources within. It helps to predict system sensitivity to various aspects. Although simulation today is used typically in a feasibility stage, there is an opportunity to continue using simulation for further process enhancement. In the future simulation will without doubt be used increasingly as a dynamic simulation and continuous improvement tool. This paper discusses the use of OptimineÖ simulation tool in resource optimisation. Some examples describe the way the tool operates and how it helps to view the technology, mine layout and operational data.

One of the current challenges for iron ore producers is the ability to respond to changes in ROM stockpile specifications in a quick and cost-efficient manner. The decision-making process to respond to such changes is normally associated with grade-control and short-term mine planning activities, from where new operating instructions to the mine are provided. Mines are under increasing pressure from changes in the industry, such as a scarcity of skilled staff; a higher turnover of skilled employees and tighter product specifications. The quality of operational activities easily suffers as a result of these pressures. The technology that supports operational activities is often poorly implemented, which results in systems being unsustainable and poorly understood by the organisation. All successful technology implementations rely on the people, processes and technologies involved being well understood. Because of the complex nature of mining, the processes that underpin mine planning, scheduling and operational control are often not well defined. This results in activities undertaken by individual departments being poorly integrated. Datamine has developed a set of tools and methods for decomposing; capturing and documenting processes and ensuring those are embodied in implemented solutions. A case study of such a solution is the GEROS planning system, which has been successfully implemented at CVRDÆs Southern Iron Ore System, in Minas Gerais, Brazil.

The Obuasi Mine in Ghana, West Africa is the largest producing gold mine in Africa, outside South Africa. The mine has changed from a mine producing from narrow vein, high grade quartz orebodies to a mine producing from wide, lower grade sulphide rebodies. Traditionally mining methods were cut and fill and sublevel caving. Now the preferred stoping methodologyis long hole open stoping. Transverse or longitudinal methods are both used, dependent on the orebody characteristics. The change has been technically, socially, economically and politicallychallenging and at times has tested the abilities of those responsible for the operation of the mine. However, the benefits have been many. Safety has improved significantly, ounces from underground have doubled. Productivityhas doubled and underground unit costs have reduced bya third. These achievements have allowed the Obuasi mine to staycompetiti ve in this time of falling gold price. During 1999 and 2000 a full review of the mining and processing operations was undertaken, and as a result, the mine is now in a phase of restructure. Efforts are being made across the mine to improve efficiencies and to reduce costs. The future for the Obuasi Mine is an exciting one.

Western Mining Corporation (WMC), managers of the Windarra Nickel Project, installed a raise-bored haulage shaft and underground crushing system at the Mt Windarra Nickel Mine in 1982. The system is the second of its type installed by WMC, the first being at the Otter Juan Mine in Kambalda in 1976/77. Both haulage systems became necessary as a result of the increasing production limitations, and escalating costs of a deep decline mine.The Windarra haulage system required a single 3 m diameter vertical raise drill hole, 470 m deep and equipped for skip haulage. Two five tonne skips, in balance, hoist crushed ore and mullock to the surface, at a design rate of 200 tonne/hr, effectively reducing truck haulage leads by up to 50 per cent. The system is now fully operational and will enable the mine to achieve its maximum production rate.The raise-bored shaft system has been shown to be cost effective and would be used again in circumstances where raise drilling is applicable.

Scientific drilling and blasting techniques are currently being presented to the mining industry as an aid in the overall optimisation process. The degree of success in the development of these techniques over the last ten years has prompted statements that generally relate to blasting becoming a science rather than an art. Many of the techniques are currently operated or at least analysed by scientists. As such, their use has been restricted to project type activities while the more routine activities associated with day to day mining has continued to be carried out by engineering rather than scientific staff. Some of the scientific techniques will remain legitimately as a project or an occasional use facility. Generally speaking a cost/benefit analysis at a particular mine will decide the level of use. This should logically highlight a number of techniques with potential of regular mine site use. Regular mine site use implies mine site analysis and hence the gulf between the scientist and mine operator/engineer must be addressed. There are all sorts of solutions and they are not mutually exclusive. One alternative could be to increase specialisation at the mines. With "career paths" becoming more formalised the trend would seem to be away from mine site specialists unless, for instance, this specialisation was provided by term secondment from research establishments. Another alternative could be the scientists themselves applying their developmental skills to "humanise" and "package" the projects in such a manner that they can be routinely used at mines.

This paper describes a steam outburst in a metal mine which occurred in December 1992 in Japan, resulting in two fatalities. The outburst occurred just after blasting in a heading face 600 m below surface (SL-50 m), 1664 m from a mouth of the mine. The scale of the outburst was large and the fragments of the outburst spread up to 34 m from the face, the total volume of the outburst was estimated to be 206 m3. The outburst materials were mostly clay originated from the typical surrounding rock of sulfide ore and basalt. The shape of the larger outburst fragments were slabs with a thickness of 10 to 20 cm. The victims were found in a main ventilation air shaft, 175 m and 380 m from the face, respectively. The mine mainly produces copper, lead and zinc. The face was ventilated by a 560 mm diameter duct with a fan and the strata temperature of the rock was estimated to be in the range of 120 to 140¦C. There is a famous hot spring near the mine. A thorough investigation into the unprecedented accident was made including an on-site inspection and investigation of rock characteristics in laboratories.

Considerable quantities of dissolved nickel are lost in the waste liquors from the QNPL nickel treatment plant. Cementation, precipitation and ion exchange techniques were investigated to reduce this loss. Ion exchange was the most successful of the procedures studied and a process for recovering nickel from stripped ammoniacal process liquors was developed in the laboratory and scaled up to plant flow volumes. The system developed uses a carboxylic ion exchange resin operated in a completely ammoniacal cycle. The regenerant is itself regenerable using existing plant, thus the only loss is the stoichiometric value of NH4+ required to displace the exchanged cations from the resin. Existing plant sand/anthracite filter beds have been adapted for use as resin columns containing 3 cubic metres of resin capable of treating effluent at a flow rate of 6000 litres/min.

Carbonate replacement tin deposits in the areas studiedhere are genetically related to biotite granites. Biotite in the granites is distinguished by distinctive compositional features. High MgO content is found in biotite in the Renison Bell granite; high MnO and A1203 contents in the Gejiu granite; and high FeO content in the Xinlu granite. The compositional features of biotite in the granites are reflected in skarn minerals formed around the granites.Granites associated with these tin deposits are characterized by different accessory minerals. Magnetite-bearing granite in the Xinlu deposit is related to the andraditic garnet (andradite 40-45 mole%)-hedenbergite skarn, with tin mineralization occurring in the contact skarn only. The sphene-bearing granite in the Gejiu deposit is related to the grossular garnet (grossular 50-60 mole%, almandine 20-30 mole%) -salite skarn, with tin mineralization occurring in the contact skarn, as well as stratabound replacement orebodies in the distal skarn. The ilmenite-bearing granite in the Dachang deposit and the Renison Bell deposit is related to the grossular-diopside skam, with tin mineralization occurring 500-1500 metres vertically and 1.5-3 km horizontally away from the granite contact.

IN presenting the following short paper the writer hopes to illustrate some uses of explosives in industrial work under conditions different to those prevailing on mining fields. This paper is based on experience gained at the Newcastle steel works of the Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited. The management had decided that as soon as No. 2 blast furnace which is of an improved design was ready to be put into commission, No. 1 blast furpace was to be dismantled and reconstructed to a similar design to No. 2 furnace. This reconstruction entailed the removal of the brick lining of the furnace shaft, and, also the removal and disposal of the,"salamander" and hearth-lining. For the information of members who may possibly be unacquainted with the term "salamander," it might be explained that this term is used by iron metallurgists to denote the mass of iron and slag formed at the- bottom of the furnace, whilst in commission.The method of disposal depends upon the size and nature of the salamander, and in the case under review it was decided to bury it below the hearth of the 'furnace' to be reconstructed. A passage-way was made in the concrete walls of the cast house, and the sand-filling of the cast house removed sufficiently to allow of the concrete foundations of the furnace being reached. This passage-way was extended until the hearth was encountered. The next operation was the removal of the hearth-lining below the salamander. The removal of the concrete was not difficult...

The Northern Sewerage Project (NSP) is an upgrade to one of MelbourneÆs ageing, under-capacity trunk sewers. It will reduce the volume and frequency of wet-weather overflows to the Merri and Moonee Ponds Creeks and facilitate new housing developments in the northern suburbs of the city. A total of 12.4 km of tunnel and eight vertical access shafts will be excavated as part of the two project stages: Stage 1 (NSP1) will be owned and operated by Melbourne Water (MW) and Stage 2 (NSP2) will be owned and operated by Yarra Valley Water (YVW). The owners require the project to have a service life of 100 years, a requirement significantly beyond many of the current Australian Standards, which aim to achieve service lives greater than 60 years but are typically assumed to achieve 40 to 60 years. Because of the potentially corrosive natures of the external environment along the tunnels and the internal sewer environment, durability was a key concern for NSP1 and NSP2. Stringent specifications were applicable to the tunnel lining systems. This paper describes the corrosive environments impacting NSP1 and NSP2, explains the key design differences between the two stages and details the lining systems considered and selected to achieve the clientsÆ desired 100-year service life. The project design is complete and construction began in 2007.

The Kintyre uranium deposit was discovered in 1985 in the course of following up radio- metric anomalies generated in an earlier air- borne survey. The latter survey was conducted primarily to acquire aeromagnetic data for diamond exploration and the uranium discovery was made during a subsequent campaign of base- metal exploration. CRAE commitment to the Rudall area for a range of commodities over a period of 13 years made a significant contrib- ution to the discovery of Kintyre. Other con- tributing factors included CRAE's multicommod- ity approach to exploration, management support and continuity in the geological team. The Kintyre uranium deposit (Fig. 1) is located on the northern margin of the Rudall Metamorphic Complex, 60 kilometres south of Telfer and 260 kilometres north northeast of Newman, in the Paterson Province of northern Western Australia. It is 700 metres inside the northern boundary of the Rudall River National Park (15695 sq. km) and lies between the Great Sandy Desert and the Little Sandy Desert (Beard, 1969). Intense weathering since the Permian has produced a subdued landscape around the deposit. Resistant rock types still retain an older plateau surface but it is incised by more recent streams. Other Proterozoic and Permian rocks form low, sometimes rocky, areas largely covered by aeolian sand.

Magnetic methods have for a long time been used in the search for iron ore. In fact the first recorded geophysical prospecting was the use of a magnetic compass to locate iron ore in the Kuruna region in Sweden as early as 1640.The largest magnetic anomaly discovered, about 700,000 gamma-s, is in this region.The enormous deposits in Russia in the Kursk region, where the ore consists largely of magnetite, were discovered by magnetic methods. Heiland estimates the proved reserves at 290,000 million tons and the additional potential deposits at twice this amount.These magnetite ores Show extremely high magnetic anomalies and consequently very insensitive instruments could be used to survey them. The first aerial magnetic surveys were carried out in this area in 1928.Large areas of the iron ore producing regions in Norway, Sweden and the United States have been covered by magnetic surveys in the past 30 years, much of the work being started after the first World War.In every major iron ore producing country, except Australia, extensive magnetic surveys have been, or are, carried out with the purpose of extending the reserves of ore. Australia is indeed fortunate that the depletion of iron ore reserves and the location of new deposits has not become an urgent problem. Nevertheless, some minor reconnaissance work has already been carried out in Australia, and the Commonwealth Bureau of Mineral Resources, Geology and Geophysics is contemplating a more extended aerial magnetometer survey in the Middleback Ranges area. Attraction, recruitment and retention of quality mining engineers is becoming increasingly difficult for many mining companies. Part of the problem is attracting young professionals, especially given the decline in graduating engineer numbers, and the other is balancing the new engineerÆs development with business needs. The evolution of the graduate program at Olympic Dam over the last five years has resulted in substantial benefits for both the engineer and the company. The program has developed to provide structured exposure to key areas of the mine enabling new engineers to step into vacated roles as the need arises. The pool of quality engineers generated by the graduate program is a buffer against high industry turnover and helps reduce future recruitment expenditure. Olympic DamÆs program goes beyond conventional recruitment of graduate engineers. Innovations designed to improve intake include the employment of graduate engineers as well as final year students, retraining of existing personnel from other backgrounds and fast track recruitment for previous vacation students. By employing a cross-section of professionals to complement the generic university graduate, the company takes full advantage of the relevant lifestyle experience belonging to the individual, which is a substantial factor in turnover. Study assistance and a salary paid for final year students and mature age students often creates a loyalty that lasts beyond graduation. Careful selection of vacation students increases the ease of recruitment at a later stage and ensures that full advantage is taken of the relationship developed previously between the company and young professional. The evolution of recruitment at Olympic Dam has seen a decline in the turnover statistics of young mining professionals.

Current methods of mucking out small development tunnels are a major limitation to improved efficiency and high rates of advance. This is particularly true in the deep metalliferous mines of South Africa, where the harsh environment, remoteness of operations and the hard abrasive rock conditions mitigate against the use of the tunnel borer type of equipment. The Loader Distributor Train was designed to overcome the special problems of hard rock tunnelling. It combines advanced innovative technology with proven simple methods of operation and maintenance. The system aims at taking advantage of new, efficient and cost effective power sources in South African mines based on replacing compressed air with electro hydraulics and the new concept of hydropower. It also introduces electronics and computer technology, for both automatic control and fault finding, into the production environment. The system is designed to permit sophisticated equipment to be operated and maintained by a semi skilled labour force. Although still undergoing trials it is believed that the Loader Distributor Train will prove highly effective, and that the new concepts offer considerable potential in areas other than flat tunnels, in particular the cleaning of inclined shafts.

At BHP Billiton Iron Ore operations, run of mine ore from the several Newman Joint Venture (NJV) mines is railed in 12 kt rakes to Port Hedland. Rakes are processed sequentially, with the lump and fines components from each rake sampled after crushing and screening. The grade of ore from the individual mines varies around consistently different means. Although a discrete sample is attributed to each rake, the sample contains some material from the following and/or the preceding rakes due to dilution by ore from the neighbouring rakes during the dumping, screening and crushing processes. Individual rake grades at the port are therefore biased according to the mine sources of adjacently processed rakes. Dilution does not affect the grade of the overall NJV product or the accuracy of port stockpile grades; however, it does limit the ability to use port rake grades to review the quality performance of individual mines and provide meaningful lump-fines algorithms and port to mine biases for individual mines, information that is useful when scheduling ore for mining. A non-linear regression model has been used to estimate the average dilution from the preceding and following rakes. It has been shown that the lump and fines samples for 12 kt rakes are each diluted within the Port process with about 8.3 per cent of the sample coming from the preceding rake and about 3.6 per cent from the following rake. This can bias the reported rake grade by up to one per cent iron. The results of this analysis have been incorporated into the daily grade scheduling system to provide more accurate individual mine grade data and consequently better decision making.

It's my privilege to welcome you here this afternoon on behalf of the Sydney Branch of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. This is a most important gathering. You, the delegates, represent what is probably the most influential cross-section of the mining investment community and the oil and gas investment community to meet as a group during the last decade. We are meeting today and tomorrow to review two related issues that will have far reaching implications for the effective use of capital by the natural resources sector in the 1990's. The views which will emerge over the two days will almost certainly 'influence the availability of new capital to the companies in the natural resources sector for the decade ahead. The two principal themes of Minval '89 are, first, the valuation of mining and oil and gas assets and securities, and second, disclosure and reporting requirements in the capital markets which relate specifically to natural resources companies. This conference is taking place at a time when further consolidation and rationalisation appears likely within the mining industry. Although the base metals and other sectors of the industry are enjoying profitability not seen since the early 1980's there is caution about committing to new capacity which could bring about a return to the low prices and excess supply which prevailed during much of the last ten years. These conditions have led to increased takeover activity within the mining industry overseas, and similar trends are as evident here in Australia as they are elsewhere. Recognition of value is therefore likely to become more important than ever before in preserving shareholder wealth, for creating new wealth and for preserving the financial health of the resources industry in the future. Valuation therefore is the first theme of the conference.
