Kidston Gold Mines commenced mining in 1984 and currently mine approximately 10 million tonnes per annum of ore and waste using a conventional truck and shovel open pit method. The overall mine grade is a low 1.82 grams per tonne.The mineralisation is generally uniform within the ore zones and mining boundaries are staked out from blasthole assays according to pre-determined cut-off grades. Buffer blasting is necessary to minimise post-blast lateral movement of in-situ grade for digging control.The characteristics of the rock currently mined vary widely from soft oxidised to hard unweathered rocks. Blasting problems have been experienced during the initial mining phase in these harder rocks.

From a detailed combustion testing program and earlier experience with Leigh Creek coal, the Electricity Trust of South Australia (ETSA) gained a wide insight into the use of low rank coal fired boiler plant. This work is fundamental for the selection of boiler design parameters and other details which in turn determine the correct coal deposit selection for future power station development. In addition it gives boiler designers a good indication of the measures required to give reliable plant operation. Extrapolation from experience with existing plant, the designers main source of information, was not considered appropriate because of the lack of experience with similar coals. Brown coal beneficiation is also being assessed by ETSA in an attempt to improve the coal quality by the pretreatment of the raw coal prior to combustion in future coal.fired boilers. ETSA is also involved in the development of circulating fluid bed and gasification processes to determine whether these alternative processes are a more viable method of utilising the South Australian coals than pulverised fuel firing.

The seminar had its origins in an Inquiry into the Box Flat Disaster and one of the conclusions from this Inquiry was that there should be a better dissemination of technical knowledge and the results of research work. As a result of this Mr. W. Roach, Chief Inspector of Coal Mines in Queensland and Mr. R. Menzies, Chief Inspector of Coal Mines in N.S.W. had a meeting to see how this could be done. They concluded that it would be difficult to have the sort of regular meetings that would be possible where distance was not significant, but a seminar would be a major step toward satisfying this particular conclusion of this Inquiry. As a consequence, Mr. Roach, who is on the Committee of the Southern Queensland Branch of the Institute, suggested when the Branch programme was being planned this year that a meeting of this type should be held, and the Mine Fires Seminar which was held today is the result. We have received a great deal of support in arranging the Seminar. First and foremost I wish to acknowledge support from the National Coal Board in United Kingdom. Not only have they released Dr. Willett for a period of six to seven weeks to visit Australia, conduct the Seminar and give a series of lectures in various areas through the country, they have also borne the brunt of the financial support that has been necessary to make this possible. The purpose of any feasibility study is to determine whether a particular investment or management program will enhance shareholder wealth by, for example, producing an economic return in excess of the cost of equity capital.The threshold rate of return conventionally used in gold feasibility studies is higher than the cost of equity capital, meaning that some viable projects are wrongly described as being sub-economic with their development deferred.Is the industry failing to fully realise its potential? Aside from important technical considerations that determine the cost of exploiting inground inventories, feasibility studies need to incorporate expectations about future gold prices, exchange rates, interest rates and tax rates.Rather than revert to speculation, insights from capital markets give a rigorous framework in which these parameters can be determined for feasibility purposes. Separate questions sometimes, and then inadequately, addressed by feasibility studies include: ò Is it optimum? Many projects are expanded soon after project commissioning - what does this say about the quality of the initial feasibility study? Moreover, does the rate of extraction really matter? ò What is it worth? Although feasibility studies are designed to address viability rather than valuation, such studies are never- theless used by the industry as further evidence that the equity markets have got it wrong again! More likely the problem is with the financial slide rule being used. ò Can it be debt financed? The bankable feasibility study has entered the vocabulary of the gold mining industry but what does it mean? Does it matter anyway how the project is to be Financed?

The design and operational aspects of fluidised solids transfer-cooling devices will be discussed in this presentation. The devices include air slides and fluoseals (also called seal pots, loop seals, etc), which are widely used in metallurgical plants and other processing plants. Cooling can be achieved while solids are transported in the solids transfer devices. The units combining solids transfer and cooling provide compact and clean plant layouts and also reduce capital and operational costs. Fluidised devices provide excellent gas-to-solids and gas/solids-to-surface heat transfer rates, hence high cooling efficiency. Fluidising gas, such as air, nitrogen or other gases, can be used as direct cooling mediums. Coolants such as water, steam and other liquid or gas cooling fluids can be used as indirect cooling mediums via tube coils immersed in the fluidised solids. The fluidised transport devices share some common features with fluidised bed equipment. The air slide is similar to a linear fluidised bed while the fluoseal is similar to a circular fluidised bed. Therefore fluidised bed design techniques are applicable to the design of the air slides and fluoseals. The heat and mass balance and temperature profiles of the devices concerned will be discussed in the presentation. The design criteria and operational philosophies of the critical components such as tuyeres and air spargers will also be discussed.

Recoverable copper and gold estimates for resource models and ore control routing decisions at Batu Hijau were initially based on flotation testwork from several commercial laboratories. Due to the greater number of copper and gold assay grade available, regression relationships were developed between assay grades and flotation recoveries. Other recovery controlling variables such as oxidation and lithology were included to improve the regression models. With additional drilling, more flotation work was carried out and the regression models were revised to include the new flotation data, also alteration classification and in situ pH. The regression models were replaced in favour of spatially derived models for ore control and short range mine planning. To harness local variability in the block model, blast hole flotation testing is carried out in unison with routine grade assaying. Recovery data are processed (kriged) simultaneously with grade assay data prior to ore polygon delineation. Short range mine planning utilises this model in conjunction with a spatial recovery model derived from drill core flotation data. Long range mine planning utilises the æhybridÆ recovery model whereby the globally robust regression recovery models are overprinted by a spatial (kriged) recovery estimate where flotation data density is adequate (Phase II reserve).

ABSTRACT' Mainland Papua New Guinea is formed of a microcontinental / island arc system (?Eocene - latest Oligocene Sepic arc) which in Middle to Late Miocene times was obducted over the northward- moving Australian plate. The sedimentary and volcanic units of this system form part of the Wogamush Group (Aure beds, Mena beds, Omaura Formation, Movi beds, Wogamush beds, Wogamush Formation. Nansananka Conglomerate and other correlates in- eluding cale-alkaline volcanics and carbonate beds). This Sepic event was followed in Pliocene-Present times by the obduction of the Finisterre-Adelbert-Oenake fore-arc or possibly oceanic plateau. This discussion will present a case study in developing solutions to a metropolitan quarryÆs public relations, legal, environmental, and productivity problems. It details an extensive and detailed project to address the blasting practice in a medium sized quarry that is surrounded by residential and industrial zones. The principle work was done over four months duration during the normal production season. It included detailed drilling and blasting audits for baseline information. In addition, geologic characterisation, seismic modeling, correction of deviations from best practices, and implementation and monitoring of precise electronic timing to provide dramatic solutions for the quarry. The quarry is in the near suburbs of a large metropolitan city. It is framed on two sides by residential municipalities and on two sides by industrial zones. At the start of the project, the quarry was in court as a result of the lawsuit by one of the neighboring towns that was suing to close the quarry. The lawsuit had progressed to the advanced stage where in the Judge had appointed an arbitrator to make the decision of continued operation. This arbitrator was to observe our progress and recommend to the Judge the disposition of the case.

Since the introduction of the pocket calculator, electronic measuring equipment, lasers and computers, the mine surveyor's approach to his work has changed. Where he once used steel bands he now uses infra-red, visible light or radio waves. The reading and storing of angles is done automatically and he now has to be familiar with the facilities that a computer can offer, instead of plotting and calculating manually. This highly sophisticated equipment is continually being upgraded, modified and fine tuned. This paper will attempt to highlight some of the equipment at present in use by the surveying profession and research currently being conducted by the WA School of Mines. The various options in EDM will be considered including the latest unit capable of measuring distance without the benefit of a reflector, thus enabling the surveyor to co-ordinate points that were previously thought inaccessible. The School is currently working on changes to the GAK1 Gyro Theodolite which may improve results and enable the operator to have more control and confidence in his observations. Areas under consideration are improved lighting, binocular viewing and interfacing the instrument to a stopwatch. In the last few years the computer is being used not only for surface pickups and control but also for underground work. We will highlight the underground options in this area and the software available.

The Golden Cross is the first large precious metals mine to be both commissioned and closed in the æmodernÆ era in New Zealand. This paper discusses the life cycle of the Golden Cross mine, with emphasis on the closure process and post closure management.   The closure process has generally been very well managed, and successful, but in spite of that some on-going issues remain unresolved. Nearly nine years after the end of mining the mine owners are still actively managing the site, with no immediate end to that in sight.   The site has been described as atypical, due to the identification of a deep seated landslide below the tailings and waste rock storage facilities. However that should not be given too much emphasis when addressing the overall closure and post-closure management issues, which could well apply to other existing and future mine sites in New Zealand.   The Golden Cross can provide valuable lessons for other miners, and the issues arising at this site should be watched closely by the industry as a whole.

Deep mining in the Collie Basin has suffered with high levels of water flow and sediment in-rushes throughout its 90 year history. Current day experience in working conventional bord and pillar by mainly mechanised means is that advance to the dip is impeded at about the 150m depth of cover by excessive water flow and pressure bursts. Extensive analysis of exploration borehole data and reconstruction of depositional environments helped define important hydrogeological characteristics of roof and floor aquifers, aquitards and aquicludes. Hydraulic parameters were estimated with some accuracy using indirect methods, and later confirmed by pump testing. Groundwater flow modelling showed that mine scheduling would have to be a balance between down dip and lateral development if aquifer pressure heads were to be decreased to suitable levels. Since pressure reduction in aquifers immediately above and below the mine opening was. identified as the key aim in groundwater control, a series of trial in-pit dewatering holes were installed, and demonstrated pressure heads could be reduced at rates compatible with a mine extraction sequence which, in turn, controlled the rate of down dip mine advance. A case history of the successful application of in-pit dewatering systems within difficult hydrological conditions for mining is described, with emphasis on the close collaboration required between hydrologists, mine planners and operations personnel.

The crushing and concentration of ores, as Herbert Hoover commented in a footnote in De Re Metallica, stretches back at least 6000 years. During those years there have been continuing changes and improvements in mineral processing technology. It has expanded greatly in its ability to handle different types of minerals, and lower grade and more complex ores. Australia will be dependent on the mineral industry for the fore- seeable future and there will be continuing demands on the mill opera- tors to improve the technology with regard to efficiency, flexibility and costs. These demands will be met successfully in the future as they have been in the past. This Mill Operators' Conference is an important forum for assessing our present position and planning for the future.

For decades strip mining with discon tinuously operating 'draglines and shovels has been the most economical operation method in the shallow hard coal opencast mines of Aust- ralia, North-America and some other countries. Continuously operating equipment such as bucket chain excavators and bucket wheel excavators in combination with conveyor belt systems, conveyor bridges and stackers had been deve- loped in Germany; during the last 25 years this type of equipment has been further developed in order to allow a high degree of rationaliza= tion as to opencast mines in unconsolidated overburden in Germany, in many European couh- tries, in India and in Victoria. The differing compactness of the layers to be mined, the increasing mining depth, the adverse over- burden to coal ratio and geotechnical con- ditions account for the combined use of con- tinuously and discontinuously operating equip- ment and systems. This paper is to demonstrate some projects showing the combination of continuously and discontinuously operating equipment which aims at optimizing opencast mine operations. When Australian voters elected a Labor Government in March 1983 the value of the Jabiluka uranium deposit as an asset of Pancontinental Mining Limited effectively evaporated overnight. The day before the election, Jabiluka was Pancon's principal asset, with the Company's 65% stake in the deposit having a market value of the order of $US1 billion. This value had been set by an agreement reached with a potential customer, who was prepared to pay $US150 million for 10% of Jabiluka. The months before the election had been the culmination of ten years of unremitting effort to bring what was then the world's largest reserve of high'grade uranium ore into production. These efforts had included two and a half years of negotiations with the local aborigines, as well as exhaustive environmental studies and conceptual mine planning. All domestic approvals required to develop the Jabiluka deposit had been given to Pancontinental and marketing efforts had successfully placed about 50% of the expected uranium production with overseas utilities. It appeared that Jabiluka was about to emerge as one of the world's great mining enterprises. The election of a government with an anti-uranium policy stopped Jabiluka dead in its tracks. Pancontinental's largest asset had effectively become worthless and the Company appeared to be facing a bleak future.

Mineral processing is at the hub of the exploration-mining-metals production system. Because of the large volumes of material processed, incremental technology investments can pay off better than for other parts of the system. However, much of mineral processing remains a 'black art', because we are behind in investing in modem technologies. Consequently, we have one of the best opportunities to improve efficiency and competitiveness through the application and transfer of technologies that have already been developed for other industries. The reluctance of minerals companies to place priority in our area is not because we lack new ideas; our senior management has not been convinced, based on our previous results, that such investments will pay off as well as other investment opportunities competing for the same resources. The key is the proper establishment of technology strategy and more effective transfer of technology. The presentation will identify the failure mechanisms of technology transfer and will present a model for improving the success rate, a prerequisite for raising the priority of mineral processing investment. Topics emphasised include strategy formulation, human resources planning, and total quality management principles applied to improving technology transfer.

A major high grade zinc deposit, Dugald River has fine-grained and complex mineral associations which provide considerable metallurgical challenges for both mineral dressers and downstream processors. A long history of metallurgical testing focusing on mineralogy and flotation concentrate production has shown that while separate lead and zinc concentrates can be produced at saleable grades, high levels of iron, and particularly manganese, are likely to place constraints on the marketing of zinc concentrate produced from deeper zones where coincidentally lode development is at its maximum. Testwork has focused on characterising the flotation response of ore types ranging from banded and stringer sulphides to brecciated ores in a variety of sulphide matrices. A high level of variability with lower than expected metal recoveries has been indicated across some of the higher grade brecciated ores. However, the dominant slatey breccia has generally provided the best results. Heavy media preconcentration testwork has been moderately encouraging and at this stage, although value adding downstream of concentrate production on-site is not seen as an economic option processing developments are being monitored on a broad front. Providing satisfactory means can be developed for handling manganese during downstream processing of the concentrate, it is not difficult to see a world-class operation emerging from the resource in the medium-term Future.

A major electricity generating authority have a proposal to construct a Power Station. An understanding of the operation of the bunker system is of importance to the designers and a computer simulation model of the operation was constructed. The computer language used was GPSS/PC which is a recent form of the language designed for the per- sonal computer. The model simulated trains arriving at the power sta- tion and unloading onto conveyors which carry coal to the power station bunker. Coal was drawn from the bunker at a specified feed rate to the power station. Numerous restrictions were placed on the model, if the bunker level got too high dozers would pull coal out of the bunker onto the stockpile, and if the level got too low the dozers would push coal back into the bunker. The conveyors and dozers were unavailable due to breakdown'at various times and trains would arrive randomly about a mean interarrival time. The system was simulated for 30 years of oper- ation and the model used a basic time unit of 30 minutes so that the system was updated 525,600 times during the simulation. The results of the simu- lation gave the designers a greater understanding of the critical factors in the operation, which may now be engineered to minimise adverse Effects.

The Mine to Mill concept, as it has become known, is a philosophy which is being increasingly embraced by mining companies committed to increasing their profitability through better integration and global optimisation of their mining and processing operations. Autogenous (AG) and semi-autogenous (SAG) mills are the principal primary grinding devices currently in use, their performance is particularly sensitive to feed size distribution. Most efforts to-date have centred on modifying and controlling the run-of-mine (ROM) size distribution to maximise grinding mill throughput. The complexity of the interaction between ROM size distribution, primary crusher product and AG/SAG mill performance precludes the trial-and-error approach as an effective means of determining the optimum blast-induced fragmentation size distribution. To overcome this limitation, the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) has developed modelling and simulation techniques that are able to accurately reproduce both the fragmentation processes during blasting and the subsequent performance of the comminution circuit. These models are tailored to suit local ore types, rock structure and comminution circuit design and calibrated using high quality field data. MIM Holdings Limited (MIM) have been particularly active in the Mine to Mill area and have instituted optimisation programs at three of their associated base metal operations viz Alumbrera, Ernest Henry and the Mount Isa Mines. This paper describes these programs with particular reference to the data acquisition and modelling phases, the predictions of potential productivity gains and the extent of the realisation of these gains to-date.

Completely dry or completely wet materials are comparatively easy to screen, but materials with moisture contents between these two extremes can present varying degrees of difficulty. The presence of moisture can impair the performance of a dry screening plant in a number of ways: ò agglomeration of fine undersize particles onto larger oversize particles, resulting in the fine particles being misplaced to the oversize; ò increasing attractive forces between particles that hinder stratification and particle presentation to the screen; and ò blinding of the screen apertures caused by fine moist particles clinging to the screen which reduces the effective aperture size and the open area of the screen. Test work on full-scale screens has shown that the agglomeration of fine particles onto larger particles only occurs once the equilibrium moisture content of the ore is exceeded, and that the quantity of adhering fines present is proportional to the surface area of the larger particles. An -adhering fines screen model has been developed from this work, and by using relationships derived between the model parameters and feed moisture content, the effect of changes in feed moisture on both product quality and operation of iron ore dry screening plants is predicted.

One of the earliest recorded risk management schemes was implemented by the boatmen of the Yangtze river some 4,000 years ago.. Between them they arranged for shipments to be split up in such a way that a load was divided five ways: if one was lost, then 80% of the shipment got through. Bottomry contracts were in vogue in Babylonian times with similar systems being used in India, in 60OBC and 4th century Greece. One of the first accepted mutual insurance ideas came in 1835 when a mill owner in America negotiated a lower insurance premium in return for installed fire safety measures. Approximately 20 years ago risk management as a philosophy was developed in the U.S.A., the philosophy followed to England and hence to Australia about 10 years ago. The business climate which induced the philosophy of risk management was that of "tight money". The definition of "assets" was then broadened to include earning capacity, skilled personnel and in a negative sense, a corporation's liabilities. In more affluent days losses were comfortably absorbed into the ongoing business expenses, the more prudent managers took out insurance which "covered everything" at a suitable premium. Statistics are available to indicate that a high percentage, (over 60%) of businesses which suffer massive plant damage due to fire, do not restart operations, or in the event of restarting have closed operations within the next 2 to 3 years - in spite of collecting an insurance payout.
