Mispah form (FAO: Lithosol) soil contaminated with >380 000 mg kg-1 creosote was co-composted with sewage sludge and poultry manure for a period of 19 months. The soil was mixed in a ratio of 1:1 (v/v) with wood chips to improve aeration. The soil-wood chips mixture was then mixed in a ratio of four soil-wood chips mixture: one compost material (sewage sludge or poultry manure). Compost heaps were set up in triplicate on wood palettes overlaid with double layers of nylon straw bags. Control experiments, which contained the contaminated soil-wood chips mixture without sewage sludge or poultry manure were set up in triplicate. Moisture, temperature, pH, ash content, C:N ratio of the compost and the creosote concentration of the soil was monitored monthly. The concentration of selected creosote components in the soil was also determined at the end of the incubation period. Temperature was observed to rise to about 60¦C in the poultry manure and about 58¦C in the sewage sludge within two months of incubation, while temperature in the control fluctuated between 15¦C and 35¦C throughout the incubation period. Creosote concentration in the control was reduced by 17 per cent at the end of the incubation period while concentration of creosote in the sewage sludge and poultry manure compost was reduced by about 99 per cent. The percentage rate of creosote reduction in the poultry manure compost was initially lower than observed in the sewage sludge compost. However, the reduction rate became similar towards the end of the treatment period. The concentrations of selected creosote components were reduced by about 100 per cent within the same period. Respiration of compost microorganisms and counts of microbial populations showed that microbial activity correlated with reduction in creosote concentration.

The BHAS copper-lead matte leach process, developed in Port Pirie, South Australia, has been in operation on a commercial scale since 1984. This process is one of many developed in the past decade to recover copper via the hydrometallurgical route. In essence, the process involves a single stage agitative leach of 100% -75um matte in an acid chloride-sulphate lixiviant with gaseous oxygen as oxidant. The leach temperature is controlled at 85¦C to assist with reaction kinetics. After leaching, divalent copper is recovered from solution via a conventional solvent extraction/electrowinning circuit to yield cathode copper for sale The BHAS matte leach process has several unique characteristics cf. other commercial oxidative acid leach processes. These include i) the use of gaseous 02 as oxidant ii) H2SO4 addition as make up acid iii) Relatively low chloride ion addition (30 g/1) For this reason, extensive work was carried out into the optimization of leaching by Meadows (1985). Variables investigated included ò Oxygen flow-rate ò Agitation intensity ò Leach temperature ò Free acidity ò Chloride ion concentration ò Matte particle size The current work was conducted to determine the effect of cooling rate, and hence mineralogy, on the leaching characteristics.

A portable surface impedance meter has been tested extensively over a wide variety of geological formations both in Australia and elsewhere. It has proved a useful geophysical too] for relatively shallow mapping (i.e less than 100 metres depth) of faults, intrusions, dykes and conductive ore veins and can be used as a depth probe for overburden and glacial ice. Case studies involving coal seam mapping at Collide (Qld. Australia), galena ore vein location at Zeehan (Tas. Australia) and glacial ice probing on the Brewster Glacier (South Island, New Zealand) are detailed. The first results of a similar unit using a lower frequency with consequential increase in depth of penetration will be presented. The application of VLF measurements to monitor blasting in mines and in the location of earthquake epicentres will also he introduced.

Mine planning is difficult. Even for small operations, it involves reasoning with complex variables and the practical difficulties of mining. It is also about predicting and planning the future in an unpredictable physical and economic environment. Yet we rely on a handful of individuals and their spreadsheets to tell us how to do it û planning the business and activities of mining to hopefully produce results that will please stakeholders. Does it work? Not as well as it could. Planning affects everyone in the organisation. Company executives are demanding more reliability and stability in cost and revenue forecasts from their operations. Management want to explore ways of being more cost effective. Miners and contractors want more useful plans and realistic targets. And the planners have to describe the method that will translate business objectives into implementable plans. Even with the use of computer technology a lot of effort is expended to produce plans that are largely qualified by the level of knowledge and experience of individuals. Better use of information and the application of Intelligent Technologies can improve the quality and reliability of mine plans and schedules. By capturing the knowledge within the organisation and speeding up the planning process, Intelligent Technologies allow more options to be considered more rigorously. But it is not just about technology. It is about how technology is implemented and embodied in the way the business is managed for performance. When this happens, the real benefits of better planning start to flow.

Alcoa World Alumina AustraliaÆs Huntly and Willowdale bauxite mines are located in the Darling Range of South Western Australia, which places their operations within PerthÆs surface water supply catchments. These catchments supply Perth with its highest quality drinking water. With the decreasing rainfall trend of recent years catchment yields to water supply reservoirs have reduced to such an extent that water use restrictions were necessary in Perth for 2001, 2002 and 2003. Protection of catchment water quality and water use conservation are crucial issues for AlcoaÆs operations within the Darling Range. Alcoa has been conducting bauxite mining activities in water supply catchments since the mid-1960s. During that time Alcoa has worked closely with the relevant State Government water and environmental agencies to ensure that its operations do not adversely impact catchment water yield and water quality. Monitoring and research have shown that Alcoa has the necessary environmental management systems in place to ensure it can continue to operate in a sustainable manner within water supply catchments. AlcoaÆs mines reduced the volume of water taken from public water supply catchments by 24 per cent in 2002, compared with 2000. This success has had an added benefit; Alcoa does not need to develop a new water source for its Huntly Mine. The conservation measures implemented to reduce water use include: increasing water recycling, using chemical additives for haul road dust suppression, conducting water audits, reducing water demand, monitoring water use, promoting water use targets and training staff in water conservation.

Evans' theory for chisel shaped picks is well known in the field of rock cutting technology. It has been widely accepted as a good mathematical description of how coal and other rocks break under the action of a simple wedge or chisel. Subsequently, Evans proposed a corresponding theory for pointed shaped picks. Theory along with experimental evidence from the laboratory has consistently shown that chisel picks are more efficient than pointed picks. However despite such evidence, pointed picks continue to be the preferred shape in most practical cutting applications. Evans' theory for pointed picks was developed in an attempt to shed light on this apparent incongruity. The theory although predicting forces of the right order was found to be deficient in several respects. This paper examines Evans' theory for pointed picks and proposes changes to it, which brings the theory much more into line with measured data. The issue of the relative efficiencies of chisel and pointed shaped picks is also examined on a theoretical basis and the apparent incongruity is Resolved.

The AJ Parker Cooperative Research Centre for Hydrometallurgy carries out research on behalf of, and in collaboration with, the Australian mining industry. As might be expected, much of its research is directed towards improving the efficiency of alumina and gold processing plants. However, the Centre also carries out research of relevance to base and other metal producers. A key element in its work is the successful transfer of its technology to the companies with which it is working. In general, this is achieved in the following five steps:definition of the problem through discussions with the company commissioning the research; execution of the research; assessment of the research findings; testing of the research findings by pilot plant or on-site trials; and implementation of the results on the full-scale. This pattern is exemplified by the work carried out by the Centre to improve the performance of gravity thickeners which are used throughout the minerals industry for solid-liquid separation. The research has focussed mainly on ways to optimise the use of flocculants (long chain polymers) to enhance thickener performance. It has been shown that the way the flocculant is mixed with the slurry is of profound importance. Computational fluid dynamics modelling of the feedwell region of thickeners and laboratory and plant flocculation studies have been used to determine better ways to contact the flocculant with the feed slurry. Implementation of these and other findings on the full-scale confirmed that improvements in thickener performance were indeed possible. As a result of this AMIRA funded thickener technology work, there have been considerable savings to a number of Australian mineral processing companies, through improved operation, higher throughputs and flocculant savings.

Gravity Leaching of high-grade gravity gold concentrates, such as Knelson Concentrates, with the ACACIA Reactor represents a new generation of concentrate treatment methods. The ACACIA Reactor is a complete packaged plant for the maximising of gold recoveries from gravity gold concentrates. This paper will introduce the process technology and provide process results from the Porgera ACACIA Reactor installation. The advantages of the ACACIA Reactor are many, and justification for installation has been varied. The typical advantages of the process include: increased recovery of gold from the Knelson Concentrate; no return of high-grade table tails, often grading several thousand g/t, into the mill circuit; reduction in tails grades of slow leaching gold; reduction in the requirement for operating staff by the removal of the manual tabling process and replacing with a fully automated treatment system; improved security by removing the tabling step where operating staff come into direct contact with visible gold; improved health and safety, by the removal of the treatment steps for the table concentrate, which often include operators handling corrosive chemicals and the production of sulphur and arsenic compound fumes; and improved metallurgical accounting, by allowing daily head grade calculations. The ACACIA Reactor was developed by Anglogold for Union ReefÆs Gold Plant and has been in production for over two years, and has proven to be a low cost, high recovery, mechanically reliable method for the processing of gold concentrates. Such has been the success of the plant, there are now four full installations of the processing plant, including Anglogold Union ReefÆs, Anglogold Sunrise Dam, PACMIN Carosue Dam and Porgera Joint Venture.

The phrase "Total-Energy" has, during the past few years, become widely used to describe a wide range of very different operations. However, if accurately described they all have one basic factor in common - energy usage is optimised with the prime mover being powered by gas or oil to generate shaft horsepower and the products of combustion being put to some use. The item which distinguishes a Total Energy system from any other engine or turbine driven project is that orate pains are taken to utilize the waste heat, whether this be in the form of exhaust gases and/or engine jacket ling water. n areas where grid supplies of electricity are readily available, the economics of most projects undoubtedly hinge upon the successful application of waste heat. However, there has been a growing awareness of other benefits, such as reliability of supply, which can be incorporated into the system. In particular these factors sway managements of hospitals and companies with complex computer facilities to examine closely the feasibility of Total Energy, Consequently, in America for example, where many systems have proved themselves the list of applications is wide - shopping centres, apartment blocks, office buildings, airline terminals, universities, schools, motels. And these do not cover the industrial sectors where the range is wider. The total number in North America is now approximately 500 and this to some extent-speaks for itself. In Australia, the real work involved in carrying out feasibility studies for Total Energy is only just beginning. 'in some quarters, the concept is not well received in that it is too new. Therefore, a typical approach is to play safe and wait until some other company has proved its operation "under Australian conditions". This is certainly a realistic approach when considering something revolutionary but as far as Total Energy.is"concerned all the individual components and sometimes combinations, (engines, generators, boilers, air-conditioning units) have been in operation for many years. The only innovation is that they are now all being brought together under one roof. This should not be forgotten when the question "where can I see something like this operating?" is asked.

The process of refurbishment is not a precisely defined one. It is under- stood to mean an upgrading of a plant which is normally performed only once. The application of refurbishment in the field of materials hand- ling equipment poses particular problems because complex plants con- sist of individual components having quite different remaining service lives. For this reason, a systematic, proven procedure is proposed for the refurbishment of large materials handling equipment, designed to ensure economic implementation in accordance with the company goals. Rheinbraun2 has been using materials handling equipment since 1900, the largest units today being bucket-wheel excavators with a daily capacity of 240,000 bank cubic metres of overburden and a service weight of up to 13,500 t (metric tons). Since 1975, more than 50 large-scale refurbish- ment projects have been carried out in the company. In the process, refur- bishment has turned out to be the proven alternative to replacement of large materials handling equipment. Rheinbraun Engineering,3 a Rhein- braun subsidiary, carries out planning, consulting, and supervising work in the implementation of refurbishment projects in Germany and abroad. The most recent example is the refurbishment of Dredger 11 of the State Electricity Commission of Victoria in cooperation with Krupp-Australia, Melbourne.

Gross at the First Ordinary Meeting of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, August 18th, 1952.Mr. President, Ladies and Gentlemen:Confronted with the task of reviewing the progress of Mount Isa Mines Limited, since the inception of the Company 28 years ago, I soon found that effective coverage was a task beyohd me, if I were to confine the address within the limits of time allowable. Faced with the alternative, a summary, that could only fail to -do justice to the subject, I turned elsewherl? for inspiration and found it in Chester Wilmot's book "The Struggle for Europe". Those of you who have read this masterly contribution to the literature of World War II will recall that he takes us, most dramatically, behind the scenes and we learn of the thoughts and ideas that were uppermost in the minds of both allied and enemy leaders at times when decision's that profoundly influenced the course of the war were taken. I felt I could safely follow this rather novel approach to my own problem. Strengthened by the realisation that the technical achievements of the Company have largely been covered over the years, and that the results of our labours are mainly here before you, I have attempted to liven up my modest canvas by going behind the scenes, and have sought to deal with ideas and the reasons for important decisions, rather. than to embark upon a purely descriptive essay.If then, you will bear with me, we shall skip back through the years to the days of struggle that our President's address has so aptly covered, and find that one man's ideas and faith stand out beyond all others. W. H. Corbould must always be credited with having founded the enterprise, for he correctly appraised the potential of the struggling prospect and foresaw what could be done, despite the handicaps of geography, climate and need for heavy expenditure.

An Investigation on the Effect of Chrysotile Particle Shape and Anisotropic Properites on the Rheology of Chrysotile Suspensions Chrysotile, a polymorph of serpentine, is a phyllosilicate mineral that occurs as a major gangue mineral in many ores (eg Mt Keith nickel sulfide ore, Western Australia). The rheological behaviour of chrysotile stems from two main factors: its distinctive morphology and its electrical surface charge. It is believed that these factors are central to the problematic rheological behaviour and low solids throughput typically experienced in the processing of such ores. In this work, a study of the effects of chrysotile surface charge properties and particle shape on the rheology of chrysotile suspensions was conducted. It was found that the rheology of suspensions of pure chrysotile is characterised by extremely high yield stress values over a broad pH range (pH 4 to 11).The disparity in the point of zero charge and range of maximum yield stress for chrysotile is consistent with the anisotropic nature of chrysotile particles. A comparison of the rheological behaviour of quartz suspensions (non-fibrous) to that of chrysotile suspensions (fibrous) provides a practical indication of the effects of the fibrous nature of chrysotile relative to non-fibrous minerals. The long, thin fibres are easily entangled to form suspensions with much higher plastic viscosities and Bingham yield stresses than non-fibrous particles. Chrysotile particle shape and surface charge are central to the rheology of chrysotile suspensions, although shape appears to play a more significant role in this regard. This fundamental study would be beneficial to the ongoing research for improved recovery in the Mt Keith nickel sulfide ore as well as other chrysotile bearing ores.

Microorganisms have been used throughout history for the benefit of mankind with some of the earliest applications being in the production of fermented foods and beverages. Reactions involving inorganic substances such as metals, sulphur and sulphide compounds were hardly ever used until the early 1900s when it was discovered that Thiobacillus ferrooxidans was capable of promoting the oxidation of metal sulphides in ores. Today, it is widely recognised that biotechnology has great potential in the minerals industries, particularly in such areas as the leaching of low-grade ores of metals such as copper, gold and uranium; removal of heavy metal ions from process streams and from liquid process wastes; and in the desulphurisation of high-sulphur fuels. Although widespread commercialisation of mineral biotechnology has not yet been achieved, it is estimated that by the Year 2000 mineral biotechnology will have a significant impact on the minerals and metal industry and will probably account for tens of billions of dollars worth of annual production world-wide. This paper examines the actual and possible future applications of biotechnology in the minerals, metal refining and fossil-fuel processing industries. Firstly, the important chemical (and biochemical) principles involved in bio-dissolution of metals from ores and solid wastes, and in bio-accumulation of metals from process and waste solutions are reviewed, including leaching practices - past, present and future. Microbial desulphurisation of coal, and microbially-enhanced oil recovery are also discussed. The practical aspects of genetics and genetic engineering, the types and characteristics of those microorganisms important to mineral biotechnology, and the current research trends are reviewed as well. During devolatilisation, physical behaviour of coals was investigated in horizontal electrically heated furnace with an inert gas atmosphere, and gasification rates of four coal chars and coke were measured thermogravimetrically in a carbon dioxide atmosphere at temperatures in the range 1100oC - 1500oC. The volume change of chars was also measured in horizontal electrically heated furnace at various temperatures. Both reactivity and the activation energy for the gasification of coal chars were found to be strongly influenced by pore structure and the carbonisation conditions employed during preparation. CO2 reactivity of chars increases with increasing reaction temperature, and particularly increases more rapidly over 1300¦C. CO2 reactivity of coke is lower than that of non-coking coal chars in the range of 1100¦C to 1500¦C. CO2 reactivity of chars with smaller pore area and bigger pore diameter is less than that of chars with bigger pore area and smaller pore diameter. During gasification, the volume of chars did not change significantly at the lower temperatures of 1100¦C and 1200¦C, but at the high temperatures, 1300¦C to 1500¦C, the volume of chars quickly decreased due to ash softening and melting. The CO2 reactivities of the chars are controlled by the mixed control of chemical reaction and pore diffusion in the temperature range 1100¦C to 1300¦C, and by bulk diffusion in the temperature range 1400¦C to 1500¦C.

The average first degree graduation numbers in geoscience, mining engineering, metallurgy/materials and chemical engineering are shown and compared with the postgraduate numbers. Demographic trends in population are reviewed and the implications for the required numbers of trained specialists indicated. Short/medium and long-term possible solutions to potential shortages of trained personnel are canvassed.

The self-organising map (SOM) is an exploratory data mining technique that is both non-traditional and underutilised. Methodologies based on SOM tend to be data-driven and unsupervised, which makes them ideal to assist in the integrated analysis and interpretation of complex and disparate æmineral explorationÆ data sets. While traditional statistical multivariate approaches have difficulty with relationships that are non-linear and data distributions that are not normal, SOM-based data mining procedures are useful in these circumstances. In a SOM analysis each sample is treated as a vector in a data space defined by the variables; and measures of vector similarity, such as the dot-product or Euclidean distance, are used to order or segment a data set into naturally occurring populations. These groupings are positioned as nodes, or groups of nodes, on a 2D rectilinear representation of the multi-dimensional ædata spaceÆ, which is the æself organized mapÆ. While it is common not to include a sampleÆs locational information in the actual SOM analysis, such information can be used to display the spatial location of samples coded by their SOM node or cluster. If one finds there are coherent spatial patterns belonging to samples from particular nodes, or groups of nodes, then there is strong evidence that the technique is determining patterns and relationships within the data that have natural significance. Variations of the SOM technique may be used to perform broad categories of operations, including: 1. outlier identification û for samples belonging to various nodes or grouping of nodes; 2. function fitting, prediction, estimation or imputation û for calibrating relationships between variables and determining replacement values for missing, null or censored values; 3. clustering, pattern recognition or noise reduction û for determining the natural patterns within a data set; and 4. classification û for classifying samples into the clusters determined in three. At the outset I want to thank you for inviting a representative of the Chamber of Mines of South Africa to address you on the subject of mining and its future at this, the 13th Congress of the Council of Mining and Metallurgical Institutions. It is indeed a pleasure and an honour to be here. As many of you will recall, four years ago I, as the then President of the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, had the privilege of hosting and welcoming you to the 12th Congress, the third such congress hosted by South Africa. The late Sir Ernest Oppenheimer, President of the 1930 Congress - the first to be held in South Africa - in his opening address foresaw the mining industry as "the most potent factor in spreading the benefits of civilisation over the sub-continent." We have come a long way since those halcyon days but, as I noted four years ago, it still remains true that mines have been, and will continue to be, the missionaries of development in many, if not most, of the Third World countries. I have been asked to address you on the subject of "mining" and to let my imagination roam widely so that delegates can leave the congress with a broader vision than they brought on arrival. It is a tall order and in my attempt to fulfil it I ask you to cast your minds back 120 years to a sultry, rustic day when the first diamond was discovered in South Africa at the now famous town of Kimberley. At that time the South African economy, predominantly pastoral, was still at subsistence level. Almost overnight the ensuing diamond rush turned the then British- owned northern Cape Colony's semi-desert scene into a hive of mining activity, every prospector bent on making his instant fortune. It was very little different, I am sure, to the gold rushes that hit California in 18+8, Australia in 1851, New Zealand in the 1860s. and the Yukon in the 1890s.

Datong coal Mine suffers from delays and sudden caving of its massive competent conglomerate roof. Detailed geological studies of the nature of pebbles and matrix of the conglomerate and its sparse bedding, joint and fracture structure, gave rise to investigation of water injection to destroy its strength and to control caving. Comparative investigations, including porisity, permeability, compressive strengths and water injection of conglomerate and sandstone led to empirical expressions relating various properties and to guidance for effective injection and caving practice. This new safe roof control practice should be even more improved with further research, including Modelling.

This paper addresses the actions of the Australian mining industry, its regulators and educational providers towards ensuring that a pool of competent mine managers is maintained in Australia and that mine management remains a desirable career path for future mining professionals. The Australian and global mining industries are experiencing an acute skills shortage. Mine managers, traditionally drawn from the ranks of mining engineers, are at the sharp end of this shortage. Exacerbating the shortage is a perception that a professional mine manager is not an attractive career option. This perception is influenced by the following forces which combine to make the role of a modern mine manager very demanding:legislative requirements for owners and managers to ensure (guarantee) the safety and health of employees; an increasing trend towards prosecution over exposure to risks to health and safety a need to be more aware and responsive to community and environment; financial, technical and æpeopleÆ pressures traditionally associated with the job of managing a mine; and mine management roles being filled by younger and less experienced professionals. Universities and other educational providers have the challenge of both ensuring that undergraduates are exposed to these issues during their study and continuing to promote mine management as a desirable career option. Anecdotal and statistical evidence indicates that young graduates are choosing and remaining in technical roles rather than taking on the challenge of mine management. Furthermore, it is suspected that the issues referred to above are contributing to the low retention rate of young professionals at mine sites. The challenges are not insurmountable, however. This paper reviews the initiatives of industry, the regulators and educational institutions in addressing these challenges. It includes a focus on:prosecution policies and their impacts, tertiary education program content and delivery modes, CPD initiatives of the Mine Managers Association of Australia, and alternative pathways for obtaining mine management qualifications.

The increased international focus on sustainable development and cost improvement, coupled with the unpredictability and adverse impact of droughts in Australia and globally, has highlighted the critical need for responsible management of water within the minerals industry. The Rio Tinto Technology Group recently initiated a priority program to examine how water management practices could be improved within the GroupÆs spheres of activity. Rio Tinto Technical Services (TS), the technical services consulting group of the Technology Group, has for many years been undertaking water management reviews and assisting group operations with the development of responsible water management strategies and plans. Rio Tinto therefore requested that Rio Tinto Technical Services develop a world-class approach to mine water management that will drive improvement in strategic assurance and operational efficiency of water at the companyÆs managed operations across the world. The initiative, known as æExcellence in Water ManagementÆ, includes the selection and use of state-of-the-art management, technical tools and methodologies to strive for best practice. The Rio Tinto Technical Services approach facilitates a consistent and objective assessment of performance across the entire spectrum of complex water management issues within a mining operation, from initial exploration through to decommissioning and close-out of the operation. Based on this rigorous assessment, detailed action plans can be developed, prioritised and scheduled for subsequent implementation. This paper presents the progress and experience gained to date in the æExcellence in Water ManagementÆ program, demonstrated by means of a pilot study conducted at Northparkes Mines in New South Wales.
