Two tunnels are being bored using a æHydroshieldÆ in section 3.1 of the extension of the Underground railway line 5. At the end of the two tunnels, directly in front of the Hotel Adlon, the shields cannot be retrieved. The steel shell of the shield will be left in place within a sealed concrete block and the reusable components taken out through the completed tunnel. For the first time in Germany, an Underground tunnel is being lined solely by means of UNI rings. BerlinÆs Underground network is 165 km long and has 167 stations. Some 450 million passengers are transported annually. On account of the urban planning modifications that followed reunification, the network has to be adjusted, particularly in the city centre. The most significant project is the extension of the U5 from Alexanderplatz to the Lehrter Bahnhof. After completion, the U5 will be a continuous east-west traffic artery. It will provide a direct link with the new parliamentary and government district, open up new business districts and the cultural centre of the city.

Since I first enrolled to study Mining Engineering, the idea of working with big machinery and explosives has always appealed to me. After a few courses at uni, combined with vacation work and a number of presentations at the New LeadersÆ Conferences I had attended, I began to realise that the explosives side seemed to have more appeal than the others. As I look back on the past two and a half years that I have spent with Orica Australia Pty Ltd as part of their graduate program, I would have never imagined the dynamics of explosives in mining. This I put down to the ever changing and rapid development in technology converting blasting techniques into a defined predictable science. The opportunities I have been given have delivered all the appeals from when I first started my study. As a result of my entry into a profession that uses explosives to deliver broken rock in a range of mining and construction projects, through the use of advanced blasting technology and products, my experiences have been wide and varied. These experiences have included the use of OricaÆs i-konÖ detonator technology and blast design software to allow for blasting operations to occur in a range of environmentally sensitive quarrying and construction projects throughout New Zealand, to the implementation of various Orica blast based services aimed at improving dragline dig performance and reducing coal loss thus improve overall mine sustainability in the coal mines of Central Queensland, to the advanced utilisation of Orica explosive products and technology in a number of the worlds largest copper mines in Chile. I have witnessed first hand the blasting technology available within Orica Mining Services to both deliver fundamental changes in mining results and in turn kick off my career with a bang.

Henry Walker Eltin (HWE) are the mining contractors for Gloucester Coal at Stratford mine, which is in an environmentally sensitive area in the Avon Valley, NSW, Australia. Normal blasting at Stratford is done in a æstand upÆ or æbox cutÆ mode to suit the truck and shovel operations. Recently an opportunity of doing a throw blast became available when part of a ramp had to be blasted to accommodate changes to the pit design while not damaging the remainder of the ramp. The objective was to maximise throw into the void in order to minimise excavation costs by reducing the amount of overburden to be moved by the excavation fleet. It was necessary that the best result be achieved while staying within the vibration and airblast limits at a neighbouring property and nearby township. Both objectives were achieved through the application of OricaÆs knowledge of blast design, modelling and i-konTM electronic detonators. The i-kon system was used because of its known benefits in cast blasting and environmental control. The i-kon system provides the blaster with much greater accuracy, control and the flexibility to tailor blast designs. It has been found previously to enhance blast throw and provide cleaner high walls (Brent, 2002). The blast was a success, producing a muckpile with a high degree of looseness and consistent fragmentation, with an average throw to final spoil position of 37.5 per cent. This was achieved without any environmental exceedance. In addition, high speed filming showed that the coal edge had remained largely in place, indicating minimal coal loss. The results exceeded the expectations of HWE Stratford and the overall cost savings to HWE Stratford from this blast were recognised to be substantial. Further throw blasting opportunities at Stratford have been followed using the i-kon system to maximise benefits.

Many of the stacking and reclaiming machines employed in the mining industry today are operating in ways that were never envisaged in the days before they were commissioned, with greater throughput, increased annualised operating hours and load cycles well in excess of their original specification requirements being the norm. In many cases these machines were supplied prior to the widespread use of finite element modelling or, in the era when such software became commercially available, those supplied designed using simplified and/or coarser meshes than would be employed today. With many of these machines being expected to operate for many years to come, it is important that their ongoing reliability be maintained and their operational limits understood. In this paper, a case study is used to outline the method required for estimating the fatigue life already consumed and the likely real life left in a machine. By reference to the machineÆs prior operating history, the use of strain gauges in the field and the development of finely meshed finite element analysis (FEA), a coherent picture of the machineÆs operational state can be generated and then investment/maintenance decisions made to ensure continuity of machine operation.

At Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold MineÆs (KCGMÆs) Fimiston Operations, located on the periphery of Kalgoorlie Boulder in Western Australia, roughly 7.5 million tonnes of rock are broken each month for the extraction of gold. With the close proximity of neighbours to the mining operations in the Chaffers Cut Back, special blasting techniques and tools were employed by KCGM to manage the blast induced vibrations and noise in this area. The i-konTM initiation system coupled with OricaÆs complementary modelling and analysis tools offered the complete blast management package. With these tools KCGM management and Orica Mining Services commenced an investigation into the benefits of electronic initiation. Prior to the commencement of electronic blasting, initial modelling was conducted to examine the vibration time waveforms and their frequency content, as these were expected to have an impact on vibration interaction with structures such as large buildings and urban dwellings. This work looked at results measured for a previous conventionally (pyrotechnic) initiated blast in the area and compared it to the results obtained when the blast was modelled with electronic initiation and faster timings. The predicted peak particle velocity (PPV) and structural vibration factor (SVF) were calculated. From the results it was concluded that the investigation into using i-konTM electronic initiation system and SHOTPlus«-i blast design software had some real potential to improve blast vibration management on the cut back. The use of the electronic initiation system and complementary software allows intricate timing designs to be accurately placed into blasts. The system has a number of working modes that allow either the precise design timings to be logged automatically into each detonator or to be manually logged where a variation from the design exists. Where such variations from the design occur, the electronic system permits the actual timings used to be uploaded back into the design file. This allows both design and real actual timings to be stored for future analysis or reference.

Eloise Copper Mine is situated 56 km east-southeast of Cloncurry, Queensland, Australia. The deposit was discovered by BHP Minerals in 1986 during follow up diamond drilling of EM anomalies associated with major aeromagnetic anomalies. The deposit is overlain by 60 m of Mesozoic cover. Amalg Resources NL commenced mining during 1995 by means of decline access and long hole-stoping. The total mineral resource comprised 1.77 million tonnes at 4.10 per cent Cu as at the end of June 2003. Proved and probable reserves are 930 000 tonnes at 3.97 per cent Cu. Mineralisation is hosted within a strongly foliated Proterozoic meta-sedimentary sequence comprising arenites and schists. The metasediment sequence also contains a coarse-grained amphibolite body possibly representing an early intrusion of gabbroic composition. Economic mineralisation characteristically occurs as a number of steeply plunging lenticular bodies with strike lengths of between 100 and 200 m and maximum widths approaching 25 m. The principal orebody, the Levuka (B) Lode, displays a down plunge extension exceeding 1000 m and is open at depth. Ore mineralogy is almost exclusively chalcopyrite with the principal gangue phases consisting of pyrrhotite + quartz + carbonate. A biotite + hornblende + magnetite assemblage represents locally intense mafic alteration of the metasedimentary host sequence. Magnetite is present in variable amounts and may be locally significant in some of the smaller satellite orebodies. Within the orebodies the sulfides display a range of textures from massive through to vein like. Sulfides commonly display brecciated textures at a range of scales. Post-mineralisation faulting has severely dislocated the orebodies, resulting in a complex arrangement of fault bounded ore blocks. These faults display considerable variability in regard to strike, dip and amount and direction of throw. A recent review of the fault system by means of large-scale structure underground mapping, re-interpretation of drill core and 3D modelling has led to a significant improvement in the understanding of these structures. A significant upgrade of the geological database has accompanied the structural review. The overall improved understanding has aided the mine design processes with particular regard to decline and access development and pillar location. This has also impacted on the design of drilling programs and exploration for additional satellite ore zones.

The Northside Storage Tunnel is a TBM driven rock tunnel system designed to collect and store sewage from four major storm overflow points along the existing Northern Suburbs Ocean Outfall Sewer. At present, sewage overflows during wet weather are the main source of pollution for Sydney Harbour. The tunnel system comprises a 16 km long by 3.8 m to 6.5 m diameter tunnel from Lane Cove to the North Head Sewage Treatment Plant and a 4 km long by 6.3 m diameter branch tunnel from West Chatswood. The tunnel will have a typical rock cover of about 50 m to 150 m. Most of the tunnel alignment is contained within the Hawkesbury Sandstone Formation which is generally an excellent tunnelling stratum, and offers few geotechnical constraints. However, the tunnel is required to pass beneath incised palaeochannels at Middle Harbour and Manly with each palaeochannel containing about 70 m of sediment.Innovative geotechnical and geophysical investigations were undertaken to examine the tunnel route and characterise the rock beneath the palaeochannels. These investigations have located zones of poor quality rock beneath one palaeochannel in particular, suggesting significant stress relief had taken place in the rock at times of lower sealevel producing structural features indicative of valley bulging. This paper presents the geotechnical model developed for the tunnel, and the models and constraints for tunnelling beneath the palaeochannels.

Blasting has been the most frequently used method for rock breakage since black powder was first used to fragment rocks, more than two hundred years ago. This paper is an attempt to reassess standard design techniques used in blasting by providing an alternative approach to blast design. The new approach has been termed asymmetric blasting. Based on providing real time rock recognition through the capacity of measurement while drilling (MWD) techniques, asymmetric blasting is an approach to deal with rock properties as they occur in nature, ie randomly and asymmetrically spatially distributed. It is well accepted that performance of basic mining operations, such as excavation and crushing rely on a broken rock mass which has been pre conditioned by the blast. By pre conditioned we mean well fragmented, sufficiently loose and with adequate muckpile profile. These muckpile characteristics affect loading and hauling (Scott, 1996). The influence of blasting does not end there. Under the Mine to Mill paradigm, blasting has a significant leverage on downstream operations such as crushing and milling . There is a body of evidence that blasting affects mineral liberation (Djordjevic, N, 2001). Thus, the importance of blasting has increased from simply fragmenting and loosing the rock mass, to a broader role that encompasses many aspects of mining, which affects the cost of the end product. A new approach is proposed in this paper which facilitates this trend æto treat non-homogeneous media (rock mass) in a non-homogeneous manner (an asymmetrical pattern) in order to achieve an optimal result (in terms of muck-pile size distribution)Æ. It is postulated there are no logical reasons (besides the current lack of means to infer rock mass properties in the blind zones of the bench and onsite precedents) for drilling a regular blast pattern over a rock mass that is inherently heterogeneous. Real and theoretical examples of such a method are presented.

The problem of spontaneous heating/fire is very common in coal mines all over the world. The coal industry faces many problems day by day due to the occurrence of spontaneous heating in the open pit coal mines. Presently, about 70 per cent of total coal production in Indian mines is being carried out by open pit mining. Fire in coal, particularly in open pit mines not only causes irreparable loss of natural wealth but also damages the surface structures and pollutes the environment. It is well known that 75 per cent of the fires occur due to the spontaneous combustion of coal. Spontaneous heating is a very common occurrence in coal mines and is a major factor contributing to mine fire. The liability of coal to spontaneous heating causes many serious problems before, during and after mining. In opencast mines, coal immediately oxidises and catches fire due to the intrinsic characteristics of coal, such as low rank, high moisture, high volatile matter, presence of sulfur in the form of pyrites, low crossing point temperature (CPT) and ignition point temperature (IPT) value and less incubation period. In opencast mines, when the coal benches are left idle for a longer time, heat accumulation takes place in favourable conditions and sometimes leads to fire. The purpose of this paper is to present the different successful case studies regarding the safety management of open pit coal mines from occurrences of spontaneous heating/fire.

A new national-scale geochemical survey is under way inAustralia with the aim to provide energy and mineral explorers with state-of-the-art precompetitive data and information about the continentÆs potential resources. This low-density geochemical survey will provide a national geochemical data layer using consistent sampling medium and sampling, preparation and analytical methods. Large-scale geochemical patterns thus revealed are expected to point to new areas of exploration potential. The project is funded under the Onshore Energy Security Program. It is hoped that this new national geoscience dataset will help make Australia a more attractive destination for energy and mineral exploration investments. Mineral processing plants have become large and complex, generally through progressive expansions. Addition of a pre-crushing stage to conventional Semi-Autogenous-Grinding (SAG) and ball mill - crushing (SABC) circuits has introduced a complex materials handling system coping with +200 mm particles. Application of High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGRs) and implementing hybrid comminution circuits (ie, HPGR-SAG mill) requires proactive control of the feed size distribution to each unit. Application of Vertical Tower Mills (VTMs) and other fine grinding equipment to achieve a finer grind size, while maintaining the throughput, requires splitting the feed evenly between parallel units. Many of the conventional comminution circuits (ie, staged crushing and screening followed by staged ball milling) must deal with the transition from open pit ore, which is generally altered and soft, to underground ore, which is intact and hard, requiring existing crushers to produce a finer product to unload the ball mills.This paper presents common process improvement opportunities which have been identified during a number plant process reviews conducted by the authors in Australian and international operations. The operation of comminution circuits to known and accepted standards, which is explained in this paper, could improve the performance of circuits by between 5 and 10 per cent, generally at no capital cost and often at a lower operating cost. The performance improvement can be realised as throughput increase, a finer product size, or reduced operating costs (ie, energy saving, low maintenance, less consumables).Process optimisation opportunities presented in this paper include: enhancing materials handling and storage to avoid segregation; standard operation of screens to reduce misplaced materials; proper feeding arrangement and control of crushers to increase their utilisation; preparing proper feed for SAG mills to reduce grind size; splitting the feed evenly between parallel equipment to improve utilisation, and controlling operation of classification units to improve energy utilisation.CITATION:Yahyaei, M and Powell, M S, 2018. Gold mineralization at Kidston occurs in a semicontinuous zone near the margin of a large, late Palaeozoic breccia pipe. The pipe is ovoid in plan, funnel-shaped in cross section and straddles a contact between Proterozoic metamorphic and granitoid rocks which are intruded by a swarm of late Palaeozoic acid dykes. Rock fragments within the breccia pipe reflect the enclosing country rocks and mix in various proportions to form gradational lithological domains. Most of the gold is free and is located in the breccia matrix and in a set of inwardly dipping sheeted quartz veins which kink around the pipe margin. Sulphide minerals, dominantly pyrite, occur as disseminations in the breccia matrix and as aggregates in the cores of quartz veins. Hydrothermal altLration is pervasive within the breccia and is most intense in areas with the highest percentage of acid dyke fragments. Sericite and carbonate are the main alteration minerals. An empirically developed genetic theory for the formation of the breccia pipe and attendant mineralization involves magmatic and post-magmatic processes associated with the intrusion of a granitoid body to a shallow level in the crust. Economic evaluation of the deposit relied heavily on the results of diamond drilling. Both polygonal and geostatistical reserves were calculated and found to be in close agreement. Geostatistical reserves are considered to more closely reflect the tonnes and grade achievable during mining. Peak Gold Mine is a new gold and base metal mining project being developed by Enterprise Metals (a 100 per cent subsidiary of CRA) at Cobar in the centre of New South Wales. The Cobar district has a long history of copper and gold mining operations stretching back to the 1870s. Extensive gold and base metal mineralisation was discovered at the Peak in 1981 below a series of gold mines which had been active around the turn of the century. Evaluation of the deposit through the 1980s led to CRA's decision to develop the project for production at a capacity of 450 000 tonnes per annum in late 1992. The project has been developed with a green fields approach despite the long history of mining in the local area. This approach has lead to several innovative ideas being trialed at the site which are expected to result in the operation being a low cost producer of gold and base metals.

A reconstructed landscape may exert long-term influences on its surrounds and behave in ways that may not be predictable given uncertainties regarding climate, soil and vegetation interactions (Evans, 2000). In recent years, computer-based landscape evolution models (LEM) have been used to assess potential and existing mining landscapes and their long-term geomorphic behaviour (Hancock et al, 2007; Hancock, Lowry and Coulthard, 2015; Tucker and Hancock, 2010).In this paper, we focus on the evolution of post-mining landforms, which are designed to include burial or encapsulation of mine-impacted areas and materials, including tailings, drains, spoil tips and other industrial architecture (Figure 1). At the Ranger Uranium mine in the Northern Territory of Australia, low-grade uranium ore, tailings, brines and other mine wastes will be buried at depth in the areas of the former pits and tailings storage facilities.The use of LEMs to predict long-term landscape evolution has several issues. These include that model predictions are based on the calibration and parameterisation of the model carried out using values determined from present day, or recent surface conditions. Furthermore, there is also the question as to how subtle perturbations or roughness on the DEM surface can produce alternative model results by randomly varying the elevations of the DEM surface.In this study we examine the effect on sediment transport rates and geomorphology for a proposed rehabilitated landform using multiple landscape realisations with increasing magnitudes of random changes in the DEM using the SIBERIA LEM (Willgoose, Bras and Rodriguez-Iturbe, 1991).CITATION:Hancock, G R, Coulthard, T J and Lowry, J B C, 2016. The Ranger Uranium Mine is located in the wet-dry monsoonal tropics approximately 250 km east of Darwin in the Northern Territory of Australia (Figure 1). Mining of open-cut ore bodies commenced in 1980 (Pit 1) and ceased in 2012 (Pit 3) and milling and production are scheduled to cease by 2021. At the conclusion of mining and milling operations, mine tailings will be returned to the mined out pits 1 and 3, which must then be physically isolated from the environment for at least 10,000 years (Australian Government 1999). The final landform also needs to have sufficient mitigation measures in place to ensure that areas downstream are not impacted by erosion products from the mine site. The proposed post-mining rehabilitated landform will cover approximately 847 hectares (8.5 km2) which represents an area that has the potential to supply sediment to catchments and streams downstream. One method of reducing runoff and associated sediment is the construction of rip lines along the contour to slow down the runoff velocity and to also trap fine sediment and nutrients in the depressions to assist vegetation growth.CITATION:Saynor, M J and Lowry, J B C, 2018. Whilst employed by Dyno Nobel as the Technical Services Engineer û Brisbane, I was asked, as part of a contractual agreement, to look at optimising PioneerÆs blasting process to provide the most effective rock to the new crushing and screening plant. This paper details the preliminary blast designs and practices that have been in use at the quarry and the initial changes made to these designs, and the effect they have had on the excavation and crusher performance.

Rock surface roughness plays an important role in excavation engineering projects and applications related to surface support structures, such as shotcrete and thin-sprayed liner (TSL). The morphology of the substrate affects the mechanical behaviour at the interface significantly. Therefore, it is necessary to quantify the roughness to investigate the relationship between roughness and mechanical properties. The joint roughness coefficient (JRC) proposed by Barton and Choubey (1977) is widely used in practice. It initially estimated the roughness by comparing it to 10 standard profiles visually. However, this method has lots of limitations, it is not only subjective but also a two-dimensional parameter with a small lab scale (Beer, 2002). The subsequent research on JRC, from visual comparison with Barton’s standard profiles to measuring the roughness with a profilometer (Weissbach, 1978; Alameda-Hernández et al, 2014). Then, 2D profiles or 3D surfaces by different technologies with higher resolution and accuracy, such as 3D laser or optical scanners (Fardin, 2004; Jiang, 2020, 2021). These 3D scanners are expensive and only suitable for laboratory scales. LiDAR scanners (Lato, 2009; Aubertin, 2022) have been applied in industrial size, but it is difficult to achieve a millimetre-level accuracy, which is mostly used to detect the thickness of shotcrete in practice. Thus, finding a cost-effective surface roughness measurement method with high accuracy is necessary. Photogrammetry is another method to digitalise the roughness of the surface. Similar to 3D scanners, photogrammetry also generates the point cloud of the objective surface and then reconstructs the 3D model of the objects. 3D reconstruction technology is a trendy technology in recent years. The structure from motion (SfM) algorithm (Westoby, 2012) to rebuild the 3D model with a flexible workflow, aligning photos, building dense point cloud, mesh and texture, which has been proved that can rebuild an accurate model in variable fields.

Many ore reserves are harvested by a combination of open pit and underground mining methods. In these cases, there is often material that could be mined by either method, and a choice has to be made. The area containing this material is referred to as the transition zone. Deciding where to finish the open pit and start the underground mine is referred to as the transition problem and it has received some attention in the literature since the 1980s.In this paper, we provide a review of existing approaches to the transition problem encompassing: graph theory-based optimisation employing an opportunity cost approach, heuristics and integer programming. Minerals are valuable resources and critical elements for a broad range of biological and technological applications, including technological developments to improve energy efficiency and the global movement to promote a low-carbon economy. However, in order to extract these critical metals, large amounts of waste and toxic chemicals are generated, as well as the use of high energy and large amounts of water consumption. Froth flotation is one of the most commonly used processes to separate and collect high-value minerals, but it still has some limitations, including low flotation efficiency performances using existing collectors and other reagents. Therefore, there is an urgent need to design and develop new metal-specific collectors to more efficiently separate and recover valuable minerals and to allow bulk water recovery from flocculated tailings. In this research, we propose to use our newly designed and synthesised novel collectors derived from a type of vitamin E (α-tocopherol), a relatively inexpensive and non-toxic natural molecule. As a potential collector-building block, α-tocopherol has a long hydrophobic carbon chain that facilitates the attachment to air bubbles during the froth flotation process. In addition, the phenol group of this molecule can be easily modified to incorporate various functional groups for targeting different types of minerals. Furthermore, α-tocopherol can be converted into a monomer for polymerisation by the reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) process, which can provide us with polymer based-collectors with high precision control of molecular weight and architecture. So far, small-scale qualitative experiments on α-tocopherol-based collectors have been performed with good results, which indicates the feasibility of these compounds as novel collectors for improved froth flotation processes.

Western Deep Levels, a seismically active deep level gold mine, started placing backfill in their narrow tabular workings as part of the regional support strategy in 1986. Over the years the percentage of working places being backfilled has been gradually increasing. At the end of 1995 the support efficiency and the labour productiveness relating to support installation were scrutinised to determine if resources were being optimised. Owing to financial, safety and productivity constraints it was decided to redesign stope support to be less labour intensive, safer and provide an integrated stope support system. This new integrated system will thus combine the previously used temporary, permanent and back area support consisting of mechanical props, hydraulic props and backfill respectively. Backfill previously formed an integral part of the regional support in conjunction with strike stabilising pillars. To design the integrated support system the backfill placement quality has to be exceptionally good and placement must be done as close as possible to the working face. The backfill to face distance was reduced by 30 per cent and in some areas by more than 50 per cent with an increase of square metres filled to increase the effect of the backfill even more. This paper addresses the design and successful implementation of an integrated stope support system based on the optimisation of backfill to the extent where installation of mechanical and hydraulic jacks could be eliminated.
