The southern portion of the Swan Coastal Plain, a geomor-: phological element formed since late'Tertiary times, contains commercially exploitable accumulations of ilmenite, zircon, rutile'and monazite associated with a series'of raised'shorelines. The:location'of the deposits is controlled by a locally outcropping*Archaen-granite/granulite complex and a sea':current pattern'determined'by'local geography and a prevailing wind direction.'-A progression from medium. to high titanium ilmenite is'evident parallelled by. progressive leucoxenisation as the age of the deposits increases. Variation's in trace element content accompany this process. An introductory review of the current grade control blasting techniques (selective mining strategies) used in the Eastern Goldfields has recently been undertaken. The survey was initiated and conducted by the Western Australian School of Mines. Four distinct selective mining strategies have been identified and a number of trends have been highlighted. Many operations, however, have developed techniques which use a hybrid method to suit the site conditions. The aim of all the mining strategies is to produce an optimum product. The optimum product is one which contains no diluent and experiences no mixing of the various identified ore and waste blocks and is fully reco- vered at the minimum overall operating cost. Due to this unified aim all of the grade control blasting techniques have many common design Features.

Autonomous systems are receiving a lot of 'press' - and rightly so, as they hold a potential for achieving quantum leaps in productivity and cost gains. Caterpillar feels that it is important that the infrastructure of on-board systems are understood and can be utilised more in the near term to `grow' a user up to the stage of autonomous operation.

The present study concerns a new type of mixer-settler unit where coalescence is promoted by means of the phase inversion method (MSPI). Using two different systems (alkaline etching solution û LIX 54 in kerosene and acidic aqueous solution û LIX 984 in kerosene) the influence of the total flowrate, the A/O phase ratio and the hydrodynamic conditions in the nozzles of the scattering device on the extraction and separation efficiencies are studied. Two modes of operation are clearly outlined and a theoretical model predicting the separation efficiency is proposed and compared to experimental results. A comparison between mixer-settlers with classic decanters and the MSPI unit has demonstrated the advantages of the latter where throughputs in the range 20 -25 m3.m-2h-1 can be easily realised.

Risk and uncertainty are attached to mining projects, and making decisions, hedging, future investment and evaluation of mining projects depend on forecasting the future price. The future technologic developments in mining will be primarily influenced by the future commodity prices. A few approaches, with different confidences are proposed to predict price movement in the future. This research introduces a new comprehensive version of the mean reverting jump diffusion model for natural-resource commodity prices. The novel model proposes that the historical data of mineral commodities have three terms to demonstrate fluctuation of prices: mean reversion component, diffusion component and jump component. The model calculates each term individually to compute the future prices of mineral commodities. Subsequently, in the second section of the paper, the model is implemented for monthly historical data of gold price from January 1968 to May 2008. This research is investigating the relationship between the historical oil price and inflation with the gold price. This is followed by a future estimation of gold price fluctuations up to 2018. The results from the application of this new method are discussed in the context of how they accurately replicate the historical gold price and how they can predict the future gold price.

The presence of platinum metals in the nickeliferous copper ore of the Thomson River Copper Mine near Walhalla, Victoria, was first revealed in 1905 by assays made in the laboratory of the Department of Mines (1).These disclosed the presence in the ore of 5 dwt. platinum metals, 1 dwt. gold and 13 dwt. silver per ton. Attempts to isolate the platinum-bearing mineral were unsuccessful, and the absence of obvious native platinum led the assayer, Mr. P. G. W. Bayley, to suspect that the platinum might be present as sperrylite. Subsequently, Mr. C. M. Lyons, then metallurgist to the Long Tunnel Gold Mining Company, Walhalla, tried to isolate the platinum mineral from samples of ore containing as much as 7 dwt. platinum metals, but again without success.In 1912, a sample of copper matte from this ore was submitted to Messrs. Johnson, Matthey and Company, Limited of London, for analysis. The analysis, which is quoted below by their courtesy, revealed tnat a large proportion of the metal pi'eviously reported as platinum was palladium, there being about two parts of palladium in the matte to one part of platinum.

The major heavy industrial consumers of limestone are the cement, lime'and steel ind- ustries. Each of these requires large quantities of cheap raw material. Other ind- ustries such as glass and chemical manufactur- ing are significant consumers and agricultur- al and constructional activities provide additional demand which is usually more local in its occurrence. Limestone is widely dis- tributed throughout Australia but location in relation to major markets, and transport con- siderations render most deposits of no economic value. Among deposits which are sufficiently close to the major metropolitan markets many must be rejected as being unsuitable on grounds of quality, inadequate size for major.develop- ment, or other reasons such as environmental considerations. The major producing locations are sit- uated in a variety of geological environments. Most have limited reserves and require partic- ular attention to quality control. Planned extraction programmes based on detailed geo- logical investigations enable not only satis- factory grade control but also permit, by the adoption of appropriate quarry procedures, the use of sub-grade material, thus optimis- ing utilisation of the available reserves.

Mineral exploration conducted over a wide area of the State during the period 1960 to 1973 has resulted in the discovery of a number of significant deposits. Base metals, particularly copper, have been of prime interest while, more recently, the search for uranium and coal have assumed import- ance. Expenditure of $27.6 million by companies during the period under re- view has located 580,000 tonnes of cop- per, 370,000 tonnes of zinc, 350,000 tonnes of lead, 24 million Kg of uran- ium oxide and 2,500 million tonnes of coal. A variety of other metals and non metallic and industrial minerals have been investigated in a diversity of geological environments.

Over the last decade mineral exploration in New South Wales has increased markedly. This is due to various factors including the influx of overseas companies an. capital, increase and stabilization of metal prices and improvements in exploration techniques. The initiation of full-scale petroleum exploration and recent discoveries of large mineral deposits in the west, north-west and north of Australia has increased overseas capital, and brought scientists and technicians into the country. Naturally there has been an overflow into New South Wales, which is less attractive as an area for new and large-scale discoveries. In some fields, rise in metal prices and price stabilization has largely contributed to the intensif- ication of exploration. Increased tin production in New South Wales since 1963 is a direct result of price rise and stabilization, and rise in the price of silver has revived an interest in silver prospecting in recent Years,

It is a very great pleasure indeed to participate in this interesting and important seminar. My two visits to Australia in the past have been extremely pleasant and this one is equally so. My task is to tell you what has been happening in the United States, in these past few years especially, in regard to the management of our air resources and to present in some detail the difficulties we in the copper, lead and zinc smelting industries have been experiencing. The sudden upsurge in interest in air pollution in the United States is a strange phenomenon indeed - strange because we've had air pollution a long time, just as long as there have been large cities using fossil fuels for heating purposes. And the problem has been studied for quite a long time. As early as 1919 studies by the U. S. Bureau of Mines were done in Salt Lake City, where I .live. In the winter of that year extensive measurements were made of airborne particles - dust and smoke. The average concentration of particles found was 870 micrograms per cubic meter of air. A very large number compared to levels we find today. A microgram of course is a very small unit, one twenty-eight millionth of an ounce. A fine human hair two inches long weighs about 100 Micrograms.

Engineering availability of the 120/200 tonne Wabco haulpak fleet at Mt. Whaleback was in the mid fifties and unstable. The project to achieve a reliable 66% during 1980 highlighted "plannable" maintenance, short cycle scheduling, condition monitoring, backlog control, and, above all, the importance of involving all affected people. It is not sufficient for consultants to design systems and make them work. The people who use the system must understand it, support it and "own" it. In this way, they will develop it and improve results after the outside help has been withdrawn INTRODUCTION In early 1979, PA proposed a programme to improve engineering availability of the Mt. Newman Mining fleet of 70 Wabco haulpak trucks of which 53 were 120 tonne and 17 were 200 tonne units. (Subsequently five 200 tonne trucks from Hamersley Iron were added to the fleet). The ore truck workshop was also responsible for 75 tonne trucks used as water trucks and general purpose vehicles. The need for action was clear. Roadheader tunnelling machines have been used in Australia by both mining companies and contractors involved in the mining and con- struction industries since the early 1970's. They have both advantages and limitations, and this paper discusses machine excavation from the point of view of a contractor who has both reaped the benefits and suffered the conse- quences of using roadheaders. Fletcher Challenge Limited through its subsidiary Grampian Mining Co Ltd has carried out an ore evaluation of one of New Zealand's largest known deposits of ilmenite located at Barrytown on the west coast of the -South Island, New Zealand.The ilmenite is located in a beach sand environment which has previously been mined for gold. Two analytical techniques were developed to quantify the resource. Considerable difficulty was experienced in this phase of the evaluation due to the presence of major inclusions within the ilmenite grains. Wet and dry concentration circuits, utilizing spiral, wet magnet, high tension and plate electrostatic separators have been G47designed to produce ilmenite from the ore. Studies to utilize the titanium content of the Barrytown ilmenite have been made. Recent work has been directed towards a titanium dioxide pigment process.

This paper examines the importance of processing to the properties and performance of high purity zirconia ceramics. Many of the principles discussed, however, apply to ceramic processing in general. For fabricated ceramic articles to display their wide range of high performance properties, they must be made fully dense. The precursor powder and postpowder processing requirements necessary to achieve full density in the fabricated body are discussed. Brittleness, the anathema of ceramics, can be overcome in zirconia by incorporation of toughening mechanisms. Transformation toughening and microcrack toughening and their origins in partially stabilized zirconia are reviewed.

During the past five years Amdel has in vestigated metallurgically and mineralogically most of the Western Australian nickel sulphide ores. The mineralogical work has been carried out primarily to assist the metallurgical stud- ies and this paper reviews the application of mineralogical techniques to such ores to obtain information of direct use to the process met- allurgist. The techniques are described briefly and results are given of various in- vestigations of head samples, concentrates and tailings.. It is demonstrated that mineral- ogy has an important role to play in the optim- ization of nickel processing operations.

A series of organoclays with different surfactant arrangements were prepared by ion exchange. The resulting organoclays were investigated using a combination of characterisation techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric measurement (TG) and N2 adsorption-desorption. In the present study, the pores within the organoclays were discussed on the basis of the micro- structural parameters, including BET-N2 surface area, pore volume, pore size, surfactant loading and distribution. The results show that both BET-N2 surface area and pore volume decrease from low to high packing density of the surfactant as the average pore size increases. Two basic organoclay models were proposed for hexadecyltrimethyl- ammonium bromide (HDTMAB) modified montmorillonites: 1. the surfactant mainly occupied the clay interlayer, and2. both the clay interlayer space and external surface were modified by surfactant. This study demonstrates that the pore structure of the resulting organoclays has a significant influence on the sorption efficiency and mechanism of p-nitrophenol onto the organoclays.

In the climate planning of mines and tunnelling with anticipated poor climatic conditions, and especially in case of longer working shifts, the main question is whether it can be reliably prevented that certain climatic limits laid down be exceeded. Working at high temperature and/or humidity can lead to reduced human working energy û a very important economic aspect û and to a risky lack of concentration on the part of the miners or to heat collapse and extremely dangerous heat stroke. With the Deutsche Montan Technologie GmbH (DMT) climate prediction programs, both the dry and the extremely significant humid heat transfer can be calculated. This is due to the high planning reliability involved. With the help of these climate prediction programs it is already possible to determine the anticipated climatic values for the operation phase as early as the planning stage of new ore or coal fields or of tunnel construction projects and to design the optimum air cooling system for every underground project with due regard to technical and economic aspects.
