This paper outlines the processes involved in acid generation from sulphides and the key factors in identifying and predicting time dependent changes in the nature of acid mine drainage (AMD). The initial characteristics of mine water; whether drainage from exposed mining faces, runoff and seepage from waste dumps or seepage from process tailings; do not necessarily reflect the long term potential for AMD. The ultimate quality of mine drainage is a function of the interaction of many chemical, physical, biological and engineering (operational) factors. Techniques are available that can predict the qualitative nature of acid generation and mine drainage quality but accurate quantitative predictions are essentially impossible at the present time. As more and more mining operations exploit sulphide ore, the AMD and acid waste issue will become a. far greater concern. The significance of time dependent factors in the production of acid mine drainage-.is not just restricted to particuL.ar mine sites but needs to be recognised by the mining industry as a whole.

Commissioning is one of the many phases of a project, it has inter-dependencies with the other phases, as they have amongst themselves, and has its own terminology and distinctive features. Commissioning time and cost can severely affect project economics, especially through unrealistic estimating, and requires a separate management team to ensure full control is. maintained. Targets to be achieved in commissioning are identified, together with the necessary policies to achieve them. Factors which have to be taken into account in applying these policies are Discussed.

Bauxite residue is one of the most important by-products from the alumina industry with no commercial use till now. The utilisation of bauxite residue through pelletising with different lime additions, hydrogen reduction, and smelting has been studied in this work. Three different types of green pellets were made with varying calcite-to-bauxite residue ratio and subsequently sintered at elevated temperatures. The sintered pellets were isothermally reduced at 1000°C under hydrogen gas followed by smelting of the reduced pellets in argon at 1500°C. Smelting of the reduced pellets leads to the recovery of metallic iron and the formation of a leachable calcium aluminate slag. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) were used to characterise the phases and microstructural analysis. The iron produced in the smelting process has a high purity, above 99.5 wt per cent. While the iron content of the slags is quite low, and the slags shows variations of krotite (CaAl2O4), gehlenite (Ca2Al2SiO7), and perovskite (CaTiO3) phases based on the variation of calcite addition. It was found that the more calcite addition in pelletising yields higher percentage of krotite phase as compared to lower calcite-containing pellets. Employing quantitative XRD analysis, the krotite phase fraction was found approximately 85 wt per cent for higher calcite-added pellet, and around 74 wt per cent for lower calcite-added pellet. The development of reliable and accurate solution sampling systems plus on-line atomic absorption spectrophotometers and voltammetric analysers at Pasminco Metals - EZ's (PMEZ) zinc refinery at Hobart, Tasmania, has led to extensive implementation of On-Stream Analysis (OSA) throughout the hydrometallurgical circuit. These systems complement industrial autotitrator and colorimetric analysers and with the comprehensive use of a powerful integrated Distributed Control System (DCS), provide extensive monitoring and control of all the important in solution' parameters for the plant. Samples can be left unaltered, or filtered or settled, to remove solids. They are then precision diluted and pneumatically transported to analyser shelters, where they are analysed for zinc, acid, copper, cadmium, lead, antimony, cobalt, nickel, mercury and ferrous, ferric and/or total iron. The range of analyses depends on the sample itself. The results are used for feed forward and/or feedback control of reagents where possible, or simple trend monitoring and out-of-specification alarming when closed loop control is not practical. The overall system reliability and accuracy is such that many daily composite plant samples are no longer analysed off-line. Operator sampling has also been reduced, and in two places, autotitrators with automatic sample pre-treatment have been installed for preparing and analysing samples collected by operators.

Consideration was given to the.applicab on of a solvent extraction circuit to be'included in the process'for the-recovery of a high grade product from.:-the Rum Jungle Creek.South uranium ore body.The economics of two alternative processes, firstly the Eluex process which uses an ion exchange process followed by solvent extraction.-of a.high grade sulphuric acid eluate, and secondly a process using direct solvent' extractioh of pregnant leach liquor, were studied. There was a small cost advantage favouring the Eluex process but when other factors were considered, the installation of a direct solvent extraction process appeared the better long term investment. A solvent extraction plant was installed at Rum Jungle in 1962.

The experimental phosphate mine of abu Tartur has been recently placed into production. Some problems'have been encountered in maintai- ning grade control due to the differences between early block estimates and actual produ- ction grade. An area of 100 km2 is evaluated by using four methods of evaluation , namely polygonal, inverse distance , inverse distance squared and geostatistical methods. The results of calculations are compared statistically with the control values of grade and thickness. The comparison showed that the. kriging technique gave better estimations for the relative ore reserved, while for grades or thickness any of these techniques except the polygonal can be Used.

In epithennal deposits changes in the character of mineralization in depth and time are conspicuous and abrupt at the interface between supergene and hypogene zones. As the reaction zone migrates downward as a consequence of surface erosion, previously deposited minerals are placed in unstable chemical enviromments and dissolved. This reaction takes place at the base of the epithermal precious metal zone. Examples at Cerro de Pasco, and Casapalca, Peru; Carlin, Nevada; and porphyry copper-gold deposits are cited.

In June 1976 a 600'tonne/day manganese ore sinter machine, with on-strand cooling, was commissioned at the plant of Tasmanian Electro Metallurgical Company Pty. Ltd. at Bell Bay, Tasmania. This machine was installed in order to utilize manganese lump ore screenings generated in the preparation of raw materials prior to charging to the electric smelting furnaces at Bell Bay. Since commissioning, trial sintering of a number of different grades of manganese ore fines from Groote Eylandt Mining Company Pty. Ltd, has been conducted and suitable sinter has been produced from these different grades. The sinter produced is used as part of the furnace burden in both ferro manganese production and silico manganese production. The inclusion of sinter as part of the charge in the production of ferro manganese has considerably improved furnace operating conditions and performance.

The use of operational research in mining is illustrated by simple examples of the techniques of simulation, linear programming, theory of sampling, and experimental design.Statistical simulation of the delays in answering telephones was used to compare the efficiency of alarm systems in collieries, and to determine stock control policy for a bin in mucking, filling, and tramming operations. Linear programming was used to help minimize transportation costs between collieries and washeries. The theory of sampling was applied to separate and balance the components of error introduced at the' various stages in the collection and reduction of routine samples of coal, and to the assessment of errors of estimates of grade in orebodies from drill samples. 'l'he principles of experimentaldesign were used to compare wear of different conveyor beltings and costs of battery and diesel locomotives in underground transport.INTRODUCTIONIn operational research some of the procedural techniques and professional attitudes of mind found among scientists and, in particular, mathematicians and statisticians, are applied to operational problems in industry ranging from policy making in the broadest sense to the humblest sampling procedures. These apply in mining equally with other industries.Anyone who reviews a procedure critically and in a systematic way may legitimately claim to be doing operational research. To study the ventilation of a mine (improve on the existing situation, examine extension projects) the calculation program used must take into account all the resistance values in the branches of the network. These resistance values are generally determined by measurements, which are accurate to a greater or lesser extent. In order to arrive by calculation at the flowrates measured :n the mine at a given moment, the resistance values have tto be adjusted experimentally. This manual operation is lengthy and delicate.

Titanium tetrachloride may be reduced to trichloride with hydrogen on a hot tungsten filament and other hot: surfaces. The effect of temperature, time and size of t.he filament on the rate of reaction has been studied. A laboratory unit for preparing a few pounds of trichloride at a time is described. The yield of trichloride is 2·2 - 2·4 gm/sq. cm. of hot surface/hour at 1,000°C. and the energy requirement 3'5-4 kWh/pound of trichloride produced.'INTRODUCTIONThe lower chlorides of titanium (titanium tri- and dichlorides) are amenable to electrolysis, being electrovalent in nature. Furthermore, relative to other oxygen-free titanium salts, they are easy to prepare in a pure state and their use has been investigated to prepare titanium. Non-intrusive methods for the reliable determination of dragline bucket and rigging performance have been achieved using physical modelling. Modelling offers a logical first step towards developing mathematical simulation models. The process of physical modelling has been applied successfully to predict dragline bucket performance and capacity as well as to demonstrate the effect of varying dump rope length on performance. ACIRL's Surface Miming Group has used physical modelling to carry out dragline bucket sizing for a new high productivity bucket and compared performance with Throng Coal's existing dragline bucket. The predicted bucket performance has since been confirmed in the field using dragline monitoring techniques.

To counter depressed world nickel prices, a continuing effort is being made at Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter to reduce unit production costs. One major area in which production costs can be reduced is the substitution of coal for fuel oil. Two areas where this has been achieved to bring about a saving are, the addition of coal to flash furnace flux to reduce supplementary fuel oil requirements in flash smelting and the replacement of two oil-fired air preheaters with a coal-fired unit. These actions have resulted in coal replacing 67% of the current fuel oil requirement in flash smelting at the Kalgoorlie .Lckel Smelter.

In 1976, The Zinc Corporation Limited Broken Hill set up a plant to re-process a hill of tailing (Mt. Keast) from the original treatment operations. With the likely disappearance of this source of feed in 1985, an investigation was initiated to determine what other feed sources might be available. This involved searching through old records and photographs as well as a subsequent drilling campaign. The paper briefly covers the history of treatment operations and describes, as a result of the information obtained, the likely future sources of feed.

Stratigraphic correlations across the Mur- phy Tectonic Ridge are crucial to regional corr. elations between the Mount Isa and McArthur River areas. Recent work in the Westmoreland and surrounding areas has substantiated the earlier general correlations between the Mount Isa and McArthur River sequences. The Mount Isa and McArthur Groups, and their equivalents, remain prime prospecting targets for major lead-zinc deposits of the Mount Isa and R.Y.C. type. A prospective area for Redbank-type copper mineralization is suggested.

During the latter part of 1936, conditions encountered in sinking the Main Ore shaft made it impractical and uneconomical to continue deepening it to serve haulage levels below the present No. 5 level. Plans were therefore made for an interior shaft, to serve new lower levels, that terminated above No. 5 level so that ore hoisted could be drawn off on this level and transported to the Main Ore shaft for final conveyance to the mill crude ore bin. The No. 2 interior ore shaft was only developed below No. 4 level and borehole ropeways with a winder located on the surface were installed in preference to an underground winder installation. No. 2 ore shaft with borehole ropeways commenced lead ore hoisting operations in September 1938. Apart from the copper ore hoisted in the war years of 1943-46, lead ore was hoisted to No. 5 level until September, 1951.

For the past 45 years, the casting of refined lead ingots by The Broken Hill Asso- ciated Smelters Pty. Ltd. (B.H.A,S,) at Port Pirie has been mainly by use of manually operated rotary casting wheels of Newnam design. This style of operation was quite satisfactory as far as standard of product was concerned, but was manually intensive and a relatively high cost operation. With most other large scale lead producers already using automated-casting equipment, an investigation which commenced in 1966, progressed through stages of enquiry, design and development until the present plant commenced trial operations in late 1973, and fully operative in late 1974. While certain features of the plant are sed on overseas practices the plant was signed and built within Australia to BRAS ecifications. As constructed it consists two almost identical casting lines each pable of producing 25 kg ingots at 25 tonnes r hour using straight line casting machines d automated stacking weighing and strapping

The crusher development programme for 7ft Super Extra Heavy Duty (SXHD) Symons cone crushers commenced in 1984. The main objective of the programme was to run the crushers at maxi- mum power for the full life of the liners. This would give a finer product sizing enabling grinding and flotation plant throughput to be maximised. The study was conducted along two basic lines of attack, the first main- taining an effective profile through the life of the liners, the second improv- ing the properties of the liners. It has been found that crusher liner life can be extended and crushing efficiency improved by modification of liner composition and profile.

Crushing for the gold industry involves fine crushing and a degree of primary milling, and this presents new problems and challenges, partiuclarly on many of the new ore-bodies now being opened up. All of this calls for a better understanding of some of the basics of fine crushing and milling. Accordingly, in this paper the "typical" contemporary Australian gold mining operation is firstly delineated, in terms of representative ore types and typical crushing and milling tasks. Then some of the technical and economic basics related to fine crushing are re-examined, including: energy relationships in crushing and milling; concepts of reduction ratio; recirculating load controversies; and questions of realistic economics in crushing gold ores. The economics of the typical gold mining operation are shown to be rather marginal; not the lavish "bonanza" many may imagine. Likewise, crushing cost expectations are frequently quite Unrealistic.
