Geological structure is one of the main controls on ground conditions within mining. It has a significant impact on the mining conditions and productivity of coal mines within the Sydney - Bowen Basin. The three main types of faults common to this region, normal, reverse and strike-slip systems, each present distinct challenges to mining. These systems effect a wide range of geotechnical and mining conditions within the mines. These include coal quality, strata stability, goat and caving behaviour, productivity and maintenance schedules of mining equipment, mine design and mine-site stress fields. A better understanding of the regional, local and mine-scale structural setting, timing relationships of structural events and the mechanisms of fault formation will greatly aid industry's push for greater productivity and competitiveness.

Large Off Highway Trucks operated in this country are generally of Diesel Electric Drive, this system tends to employ the familiar Electric Wheel. A number of fleets now employ the Traction Motor System as an alternative. An investigation is made of the operation of two such fleets. A brief description is given defining the components and their basic functions in each system. Available life history is presented and system reliability, maintainability and operator reaction is examined. Although manufacturers are now offering mechanical or mechanical/hydraulic drives in the larger machines comments will be restricted to examining the Diesel Electric System. Since commencing operations in the mid 1960 period Hamersley Iron has made use of the diesel electric drive system using the familiar Electric Wheel. In a fundamental study of the physical chemistry of steelmaking slag, equilibra bet- ween hydrogen-water vapour gas mixtures and liquid slags contained in solid iron crucibles have been measured for four binary slags, FetO-CaO, FetO-Si02, FetO-TiO2 and FetO-Al203 at 14000C. From the data, the activity of iron oxide and the ratio of ferrous and ferric ions (A = Fe3+/Fe2+) were calculated for the slag composition. The best ionic model is found to be that based on regular solution of cations. The oxygen distribution between slag and metal is quantitatively expressed by this model over a wide range of slag composition.

Two field studies to monitor fill pres sures and vein-wall deformation were conducted in mines of the Coeur d'Alene mining district in Idaho. Both operations employed cut-and-fill mining techniques in nearly vertical veins aver- aging 10 feet in width, and backfilled with classified mill tailings. Hydraulic pressure cells were used to measure transverse, longitudinal, and vertical pressures within the backfilled stopes. Rock bolts extending into the manways and mechanical closure devices were used to monitor vein-wall convergence. Continuous recorders were used with selected pressure cells to prolong the life of the installation. Transverse pressures in excess of 600 psi and stope wall closure up to 22 inches were re- corded. Closure rates were higher at midheight of the stope than they were near either sill, indicating that the vein walls react similarly to a beam supported on each end.

Traditionally, surface coal mines in the Western United States have been limited by economics to depths between 150 to 200 feet. Utah International Inc., however, is now planning to strip coal its San Juan Mine in Northwestern New Mexico to depths ranging up to 400 feet while uncovering 20 feet of steam coal. This method is cost-competitive with nearby shallower coal deposits and underground mining of the same property. How trucks and shovels can pre-strip for a dragline, along with results of the planning process, comparison with alternate systems, capital requirements, operating costs and comparisons with other coal sources are all detailed. Also discussed are the major problems anticipated, how they might be corrected, and potential improvements to the concept. Introduction The San Juan Deep Stripping Project will be situated at Utah International's San Jean Mine. The mine is in the Four Corners region, so-called because four states enjoy a common border point about 30 miles to the northwest.(see Figure 1). Vibration analysis for diagnosis of machines is a powerful instrument for condition monitoring. Especially for diagnosis of antifriction bearings various equipment and techniques have been developed and are available. The envelope analysis is the most reliable method for bearing diagnosis. Different bearing failures lead to different patterns of the envelope spectrum. Checking the amplitudes of characteristic bearing frequencies is mostly not sufficient for a reliable diagnosis. Therefore human experts compare the pattern of the spectrum with typical patterns of bearing defects. In this paper a diagnosis system is presented which imitates this action of human experts. Using a neural net the system not only distinguishes typical bearing defects but also detects unbalance, beating of disengaged machine parts and other kinds of machine failures.

A large and increasing data base of apatite fission track results from sedimentary and granitic rocks exposed within the southeastern highlands and along the continental margin of Australia provides constraints for the tectonic development of the southeastern passive margin. The fission track results suggest that many regions of the southeastern margin of Australia experienced distinct episodes of relatively rapid cooling during the middle Cretaceous to early Tertiary that can be attributed to the effects of rifting. One cooling episode is middle Cretaceous in age and related to denudation of the southeastern highlands from Tasmania to northern New South Wales between -90-100 Ma. Rocks exposed along the present coast line record a later episode of rapid cooling, which is diachronous and decreases in age northward from -80 to 90 Ma in northern Tasmania to southern New South Wales, -60-80 Ma in central and northern New South Wales, and to -50-60 Ma in southern Queensland.

A major initial and ongoing cost component in many mining operations is that of transporting mined materials and processed ore from the point of extraction or processing to the next operation. For various reasons the transport distance can be significant or in some cases the route may be particularly challenging. The trend to higher production rates to gain economy of scale benefits and capitalise on sales opportunities means that optimisation of transport can play a significant part in profitability. Apart from the cost criteria, increasingly there are other criteria such as environmental restraints, land ownership and security of supply that can have a significant impact on determination of the optimum route and transport vehicle. The paper aims to briefly highlight the important selection criteria and the benefits and disadvantages of the most commonly utilised transport vehicles. It then moves on to looking in more depth at belt conveying, highlighting the unique capabilities of the Metso MRC Cable Belt Conveyor system.

With a view to producing increased target output every year, Indian coal mining industry is fast moving towards mechanisation but the present approach of mechanisation suffers from lack of standardisation, mainly due to nonavailability of the cutting data for various machine/rock combinations. The coal seams of the country are relatively hard in nature and the coaling machines are reported to be affecting production and productivity of the coal mine and the very trend of niechanisation. This paper presents the result of extensive study performed to visualise the cutting characteristics of coal seams of compressive strength ranging from 20 MPa to 65 NIPa. In a specially designed drag bit type coal plough rig, continuous recording of cutting forces was done with the help of a microprocessor based data logger and the specific energy of cuttability was evaluated at different depth of cut and speed of cutting. The geomechanical properties such as compressive strength, orientation and frequency of cleats etc. and different indices of coal seams were measured in the laboratory and field and relationship was developed for easy determination of specific energy.

Expansion of the B.H.P. Co. Ltd. mater ials handling facilities, at their Newcastle Steelworks, began in 1964 and continued until 1970. The present complex handles the annual iron ore requirement of some three million tons for the Sinter Plant and Blast Furnaces. Iron ore is discharged from ore carriers and conveyed at rates up to 3,000 t.p.h. to either of two 180,000 ton capacity storage yards, where it is blended using boom stackers. Material is reclaimed from these yards at rates up to 1,000 t.p.h. using a slewing boom bucket-wheel reclaimer and fed to a screening station. Oversize material is scalped out and crushed in a closed circuit cone crusher. Undersize material is sized on double-deck vibratory screens which separate at 1/4in (6mm). The two fractions are blended in two of four 70,000 ton capacity blending yards using slewing boom travelling stackers. Bridge-mounted bucket-wheel reclaimers reclaim the blended piles at 1,000 t.p.h. Fine ore is conveyed to the Sinter Plant and lump ore to a second screening station, for rescreening, before passing to the Blast Furnace.

The Canada Centre for Remote Sensing (CCRS) has developed an airborne sensor, the SWIR Full Spectrum Imager (SFSI) which detects in the Short Wave Infrared range of the solar spectrum from 1220 to 2420nm. In June of 1995, a demonstration flight was undertaken in the state of Nevada with the support of the companies listed above. The focus of the flight was to collect image data over well known mineral deposits with the objective of evaluating the applicability of this sensor to alteration mineral mapping. Some of the Nevada sites chosen include Cuprite and Goldfield, volcanic hosted acid sulfate systems; Yerington, a structurally complex porphyry copper deposit; and Virginia City, a Quartz- Sericite-Pyrite vein system with advanced argillic pods. Ground spectral data was collected with the PIMA-II spectrometer. Solar reflectance calibration was done by Desert Research Institute personnel at Virginia City and Cuprite. This paper will discuss the configuration of the sensor and present image and ground data for Goldfield and Virginia City.

As mining operations become larger and more complex, larger volumes of geological, geophysical, and production data must be manipulated and interpreted on a day-to-day basis. Because of the large volume of data, more sophisticated data storage strategies, interpretation tools, and visualisation tools must be used by exploration and mining operations in order to remain competitive. Critical to better practice is an understanding of the basic syntax and character of geological and mining data, expressed in the form of a data model. In the short-term, a data model can be used to implement or evaluate schemes for data storage or exchange. It can be used to evaluate software. In the longer term, a data model is essential to the design of the next generation of software for 3D geological modelling. In this and the related paper (Lin et al, 1995) the data model in use by CSIRO is presented, together with: 1. examples of the use of data transfer in the linkage of existing mining software; and 2. examples of the use of the data model in software design.

In order to overcome the statistical limitations imposed by the need to recover density tracers by hand, magnetic density tracers were developed to determine the efficiency of dense medium separators treating porous materials. The tracers were manufactured by extrusion of polypropylene ferrosilicon mixtures and subsequently coated with a distinctive paint to allow hand sorting according to density. Fifteen tracer batches were manufactured in the range 1.61 - 1.94 g/cm3. The tracer densities were determined by a hydrostatic method. The tracer method was applied to the dense medium separation of a Moroccan oil shale in a pilot scale Dyna Whirlpool separator. For each test, about 20,000 tracers were added with the plant feed and subsequently recovered from the products with a dry low intensity magnetic separator. The Tromp curve determined by conventional heavy liquid analysis was displaced towards lower densities compared with that determined by tracers, indicating that the porous shale particles absorb heavy liquid. It is concluded that for porous materials like oil shale and coal, the tracer method gives the most accurate results. In pilot scale testwork the tracer method is also much faster than the conventional heavy liquid analysis, as rather large samples have to be processed by the latter method to ensure Representativeness.

This paper deals briefly with three of the more controversial aspects of the geology of the Mount Isa ore deposits namely the geologic structures, the method of ore deposition and the origin of the ore.In the section on geologic structures, an outline is first given of the purely tectonic deformation advocated by the early authors. The current interpretation, which differs in the proposed order of events and causal forces, is then discussed. Other concepts, which attribute all or part of the deformation to sedimentary features or preconsolidation movement, are outlined ilnd commented on.The remaining two sections deal mainly with the better known lead-zinc orebodies. In the first of these a brief description and criticism is given of the early interpretation which was based on the deposition of successive waves of mineralisation which replacedindividual beds in the shales. The current ideas, which visualise emplacement of the ore between the beds rather than replacement of them, is then discussed. The final section develops the case for a sedimentary origin of the lead-zinc ores and broadly outlines the author's ideas concerning the evolution of the Mount Isa ore deposits.INTRODUCTIONAny consideration of the geology of Mount Isa must begin with the work of Blanchard and continue with that of Hall. Individually, or as co-authors, they published various papers on the geology of Mount Isa. Of these, the best known is their "Rock Deformation and Mineralisation at Mount Isa" (1941) which gave a comprehensive account of all aspects of Mount Isa geology.It is necessary to appreciate the limits set on geological knowledge of the mine and environs in 1941 by the extent of mine development and regional geologic studies. Underground, 7 level (897 ft.) was the lowest producing level. It is proposed to deal with those raw materials which are produced in South Australia to meet the needs of the country's steel industry. They are chiefly, iron ore, limestone and quartz.Iron ore and limestone are fed to the blast furnaces of Newcastle and Port Kembla together with coke to produce the hot metal charge for the open hearth steel furnaces.They are also qsed in the raw state in the steel furnaces to assist in the conversion of the hot metal to steel. The iron ore is quarried from' Iron Knob and shipped from Whyalla to Newcastle and Port Kembla, whilst the limestone is supplied from the deposits at Rapid Bay and shipped in the same manner.Quartz is used in the manufacture of ferro-silicon, an alloy which is added to the ladles of molten metal tapped from the open hearth furnace in the case of almost every grade of steel. It is obtained from a quarry situated between Iron Knob and Whyalla, and shipped to Newcastle.IRON OREWith the exception of several small quarries situated at Breadalbane, Cadia, Cowra, Crookwell, Michelago, Jerrawa and lerraama in New South Wales, the iron ore requirements of Australia's steel industry to date have been met from Iron Knob and the Middleback Range in South Australia.Several of the small deposits in New South Wales were worked during the war years of 1941-44 during the shipping emergency and produced 1,355,417 tons, compared with an output of approximately 43,000,000 tons from Iron Knob between 1901 and 1949.

In line with mining operations throughout Australia, Western Mining Corporation Limiter' is striving to increase productivity by intro-ducing mechanized mining techniques wherever possible. Kambalda Nickel Operations' (K.N.O.) largest operating nickel mine, Long Shaft, is currently introducing mechanized cut and fill methods which must provide flexibility to cater for an orebody that variesconsiderably in width, both along the strike and up dip.This has resulted in modifications to the previous approach to primary level develop-ment, and intermediate stope development, and in the type of development and production equipment being employed. Electric-hydraulic diesel jumbos and diesel loaders have now been mated with conventional rail equipment and production airtrack machines are being utilized.The transition to mechanized methods is in its preliminary phase and is being monitored closely to ensure any productivity gains are not offset by a substantial drop in mine grade. The precise method ofmechanized mining has not been finalized and selective methods will be used, according to the ore width and ground conditions, which vary throughout the mine.

The marine portion of the Pacific Basin and Rim constitutes a significant part of the world's surface in which the mineral resources are virtually undeveloped. Indications of substantial resources have resulted in speculation and uncertainty with regard to their potential in the near term. The main issues are centered on the markets for the resource materials, the technology needs for their recovery, and the possible impacts of their development on the environment. While the governments of Japan, France, the Soviet Union, India, China, and Korea are financing new programs in deep ocean mining, the US is consolidating its early leadership by the continuation of NOAA's authority under the Deep Seabed Hard Mineral Resources Act and the Sea Grant Act, Interior's authority under the outer Continental Shelf Lands Act, and by the development of a new Marine Minerals Technology Center within the Department of Interior's mineral institutes program, managed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The Center has a Continental Shelf Division (CSD) located in Mississippi, and an Oceans Basin Division (OBD) located in Hawaii. Research and training in the divisions is directed toward the practical aspects of mineral recovery from the nearshore and deep ocean environments with a strong bias for the OBD toward industrial and international cooperative programs in the Pacific Basin and Rim. In terms of resource development, the marine minerals in the Pacific Basin may be favored in some cases, in competition with land sources, by political and environmental considerations.

The Jameson flotation cell was developed jointly by Mount Isa Mines Limited and Professor GJ Jameson of the University of Newcastle. The cell has been used in a number of cleaning applications within Mount Isa Mines Limited. In 1989 Peko Mines tested the Jameson flotation cell at the Warrego concentrator to upgrade recleaner concentrate. 2 x 1.4 m diameter Jameson flotation cells were installed in 1990. This paper describes the testing, commissioning and operation of these Cells.

Solar Salt, Lunar Ambitions I Bauerti The title of this paper is `Solar Salt, Lunar Ambitions'. It is largely the result of a lack of imagination and a tight deadline. I was seeking a catchy title to convey the image of being 'here' and wanting to get `there', with `there' being a long way away and our being held 'here' by powerful gravitational forces. I tried `Solar Salt, Lunar Landings', but that implied we had already reached `there' when, on reflection, we had not. A colleague suggested 'Solar Salt, Luna Park' which is a fun park in Sydney and, I must admit, there was appeal in the image of having embarked on a wild roller coaster ride with stomach-wrenching twists and turns and the only reward being a pair of sweaty palms, and a feeling of nausea. That's sometimes how it feels when you launch into change. In the end I settled for the more sedate `Lunar Ambitions'. It contained that suggestion of hope and continual striving which are central to the idea of best practice. I will discuss our experiences in this area shortly, but I would firstly like to provide some background to our business. The salt industry is steeped in history and tradition. As one learned commentator observed, common salt is 'a substance seemingly too ordinary to think about, yet it is the oldest of man's raw materials and the basis of some of his newest inventions' (Multhauf, 1978). From ancient times, salt was recognised as a key necessity of life and it has played a role in the rise and fall of governments throughout history. The Romans recognised its importance when they gave their soldiers money regularly to purchase salt, hence our modern word 'salary'. Today, while culinary use remains important, the main consumer of salt is the chemical industry (Figure 1).

Gas velocity (Jg) measurements conducted close to the froth-pulp interface over the cross-section of a flotation cell reveal how efficiently the incoming air is being dispersed throughout the volume of the cell. Furthermore, measurements of Jg at deepest locations in the cell provide valuable information about air recirculation and dispersion conditions in the bulk volume of the cell. Gas velocity in flotation cells has predominantly been measured by a transient capture of gas in a graduated probe. In this project, a new sensor for measuring gas velocity in an on-line manner was developed. A probe is partially immersed in the flotation machine, below the froth-liquid interface. The probe is used to collect the rising air bubbles from the liquid phase. The liquid-froth interface is shifted into the probe under vacuum. A controlled vacuum is kept inside the probe. As air bubbles burst inside the probe, the excess of air is continuously removed from the probe via suction. The removed air is measured using a mass flow meter. The fully automated sensor allows us to continuously measure Jg at different location in a flotation machine. An experimental programme was carried out in a 10 cm diameter laboratory flotation column to determine the accuracy and repeatability of the automated sensor. The new sensor was used for evaluating gas dispersion conditions in a 215 litre transparent laboratory scale flotation cell. Gas velocity distributions along the radial and axial directions of the cell were measured over a wide range of operating conditions. The operating conditions in the cell were modified by altering impeller speed and air flow rate. Two different rotor-stator mechanisms were utilised to disperse the air in the cell, the MultiMix and the FreeFlow mechanism. In this paper, a description of the gas velocity sensor is given, and the results of the experimental work are discussed in detail.
