In comparisons of a trial extruded brick containing 33 per cent coalwash and 67 per cent clay and a trial pressed brick containing 100 per cent coalwash with a standard extruded clay face brick, the mixed feed stock trial brick compared favourably with the standard brick. If a highly plastic clay is used to mix with the coalwash, satisfactory results are obtained in respect to dimension, strength, water absorption, efflorescence, resistance to salt attack, hardness, colour, weathering, mineralogy and porosity. Although a brick containing only coalwash can be successfully manufactured in a press, its mechanical and physical properties are inferior. This mixed feed stock brickmaking technology leads to the utilisation of a by-product with a potential saving of raw material costs. The extent of use is likely to depend on the proximity of the coal washery and the brickworks and the economicsof transportation costs.

An amount of explosives, whether it be cylindrical, spherical, etc in configuration, with a hollow cavity in one face or end is known as a hollow or shaped charge. When this charge is initiated, a focussing of explosive energy will occur within this cavity. This focussing, or concentration of detonation products creates an intense localised force greater than just the simple detonation of a conventional explosive, (without a hollow cavity). If this hollow cavity explosive is directed against a target material this concentrated force is capable of creating a deeper penetration than the same amount of explosive without the hollow cavity. If a metallic liner material is used in the hollow cavity, upon detonation of the explosive this liner will form into a high velocity penetrating jet. Depending on the explosive type and the liner material's configuration the jet tip can travel up to 10 km/s. Linear shaped charges were developed using the abovementioned shaped charge concept but instead of being formed about an axis, they are elongated and constructed along the principal axis. Therefore instead of creating a narrow circular penetration jet, it forms a thicker planar cutting jet ideal for linear cutting purposes. Using Linear Shaped Charges (LSC) for pre-splitting is expected to result in more accurate directional fracture propagation, while minimising lateral micro fractures in the surrounding rock mass which is required to remain undamaged.

Brown coal in Victoria in spite of its substantial reserves is not utilized greatly because of its high moisture content(-65% w/w). Transportation and handling costs of raw brown coal, on an available energy basis are so expensive that 93% of production is burnt for electricity generation on or adjacent to the coal deposit in Victoria. With direct firing of moist brown coal in power stations, approximately 20% of the gross calorific value of the fuse is used to evaporate the water contained in the coal. This energy is lost as vapour with the flue gas which is vented to the atmosphere. Also there is a 25% increase in flue gas volume and the size and cost of most of the units through which it passes must be appropriately larger. Since there are large quantities of water present the flame temperature is significantly reduced. For zero excess air and no air pre-heating the theoretical flame temperatures are: 609'o wow moisture 1450¦C 40% ª ª ª 1790¦C ZOO ª ª ª 1990¦C As a result of this there is a reduction in radiant heat transfer leading to a requirement for a two fold increase in radiant tube area. A boiler of much greater size and cost is thus required to house the additional tubes. Figure 1 illustrates the relative sizes of a boiler fired with 60% moisture brown coal with a boiler or similar output fed with a British bituminous coal, 14% moisture.

EQUIPMENT TO BE DISCUSSED It is the intention of this paper to discuss the transporting of large skid mounted equipment and track machines around open cut mines. By large I mean 100 to 350 tonne capacity being trans- ported on minesite lowloaders and the capability of moving loads of 300 to 1200 tonne by other means. It is also possible to move larger loads. The main factor in transporting large loads is eco- nomics and is a balance between the cost of the transporter and the increased production from the equipment being moved. For example it could be possible to shift a 7000 tonne dragline faster than their own means of propulsion, being the "walking feet" method. However for the cost of $10 to $12,000,000.00 or more you can afford to walk the dragline and suffer the production loss. Let us concentrate on the economically realistic. BOSICH FBT MINESITE LOWLOADERS 100 TO 350 TONNE CAPACITY. Why initially consider having such a transporter? Our experience has shown that initial enquiries evolve from mines requiring to move large drills, 50 to 200 tonne weight and large hydraulic excavators or backhoes which are track mounted. The reason for shifting them is to move equipment from a mining face to enable blasting, to remove to the central workshop for repairs, overhauls and routine maintenance, to transport equip- ment from one mine face to another, and for drills, to move from one drilling pattern to the next. The cost in terms of time lost and extra wear on tracked equip- ment easily justifies the cost of the transporter. The tracks on large drills and shovels are not intended for long distance walk- ing. These tracks are designed to move the machines to position for drill holes, or moving around the mine face. Long distance travel, ie generally 1 km or more, results in overheating of track rollers, track drive components and accelerated wear on tracks.

Measurements of the rate of PbO reduction from high lead metallurgical slags were made under laboratory conditions using graphite, a CO-50%CO2 gas mixture and metallic iron as reductants. The results show a transition in rate-controlling step at low PbO contents (i.e. 6 wt.% PbO). At medium to high PbO contents in the slag, the reduction rate was found to be strongly affected by the slag chemistry, temperature and reductant type. The effect of stirring and hence mass transfer in the slag phase on the reduction rate of PbO was found to be insignificant at medium-high PbO contents. Attention is drawn to the importance of chemically controlled reaction rates at the slag-gas interface. Parallels between these results and test work on a 5 tph scale have been briefly drawn.

The Eocene-Oligocene porphyry belt of northern Chile contains the worldÆs largest accumulation of porphyry-related copper metal. Conflicting models exist regarding the relative importance of strike-slip and reverse faulting during the emplacement of the porphyry and epithermal systems, based on regional studies and also from work at the Chuquicamata deposit. In contrast, at the Collahuasi district, high sulfidation state copper-silver mineralisation was superimposed into the core of the Rosario copper-molybdenum porphyry deposits along normal faults during gravitational collapse of the Domeyko Cordillera. Exhumation of the porphyry environment occurred rapidly during this event, allowing near-surface epithermal mineralisation (<200 m paleodepth) to be juxtaposed into the potassic altered core of the porphyry deposit (estimated depth of formation: 1300 m) in the space of approximately one million years. Mass wasting after major episodes of tectonic uplift provides an effective method of hypogene upgrading of porphyry ores by high sulfidation mineralisation.

Modem blast initiation systems allow users many options for connection and application in the field, and have resulted in more innovative and complex uses of sequencing to influence blast outcomes. However, no tool existed which allowed the blaster to easily and quickly assess the effect of different options. The original requirement was for a computer program which allowed the easy input of blast patterns and the associated initiation sequence, and then permitted the evaluation of different options with respect to established criteria such as the number of holes per delay and angle of initiation. The implementation of this goal saw the development of the SHOTPIan blast sequence design software, with particular emphasis on an easy-to-use menu driven interface and visualisation of the blast sequence. Extensive trialling during development saw the incorporation of additional features requested by industry such as the ability to import from established mine design software packages, and further features such as the calculation of burden relief times. Case studies of the use of the program are provided, where the rapid evaluation of a number of options has enabled blast results to be optimised. Concentrates produced from MnO2 and Fe203 ore fines have been targeted as potential feedstocks for direct metallurgical processing. Prereduction of pyrolusite-rich Mn02 sands to MnO has been investigated in batch and continuous experimental bubbling fluidised beds using CO-H2 reducing gas mixtures. This process has been found to produce a high grade feedstock suitable for smelting to ferroalloys or acid digestion for chemicals production. Similarly, production of highly metallised direct reduced iron (DRI) from hematite ore fines has also been investigated in batch bubbling bed reactors. Programs to characterise the reduction kinetics, fluidisation behaviour and defluidisation phenomena for both feedstocks are currently in progress to enable optimum process conditions to be determined.

The results expected from a longwall face can best be estimated from the ideal production rate, determined by the capacity of the equipment and the conditions in which it is installed, the effective operating hours, and the utilisation.The effective operating hours are determined by a number of scheduling factors which include the proportion of manned time to calendar time, the effective shift factor (effective time to manned time) and the move times.Analysis of the results achieved on the last 121 completed longwall panels in Australia (1984 onwards) shows a significant trend between 'actual tonnes/manned hour' and 'ideal production rate' (the measure of the capacity of the installation).Using 1982 'state of the art' longwall equipment, (the average in use in the seven year period), it should be possible to produce around 2.7M tonne/year ROM from a mine with one longwall. Few mines are achieving this.A review of production scheduling factors and general natural hazards affecting some mines suggests three things.1. Whilst some increase in average effective hours has followed the CIT decision, further improvement is possible at many installations.2. Many mines subject to general natural hazards, such as high gas make and high general stress, have found effective solutions and achieve the same utilisation as the overall average.3. A small number of faces within such mines have been severely affected, some less so. The most severe effects of natural hazards appear to be very site specific. This emphasises the need for detailed investigation of the causes, and development of means of predicting their presence. Only then can either satisfactory technical solutions be found to overcome the problems or prior decisions be chosen not to mine badly affected panels.

The Mary Kathleen uranium deposit occurs in 1740-1780 M yr-old calc-silicate melasedimentary and mela-igneous rocks of lhe Corella Formalion which have been tightly folded into lhe Mary Kathleen Syncline. The Corella Formation consists of malic and felsic tuffaceous(?) calc-silicates, quartzile, and minor marble, conglomerate and basic volcanics. Garnet-rich rocks form semi-concordant and transgressive masses in the middle and upper portion of the sequence. Granite, gabbro and acid porphyry dykes also occur in the syncline.Uranium-rare earth mineralisation is closely associated with certain malic rocks and occurs wilhin or close to garnet-rich masses. At Mary Kathleen, uraninite grains are enclosed mainly by allanite which is dislribuled through massive garnet as an irregular honeycomb of interconnected shoot and lenses. The mineralisation occurs along strike from dioritic rocks and conglomerate and lies close to the axis of the Mary Kathleen yncline and adjacent to a major faull zone. All other localities allanite-uraninile mineralisation is broadly stratiform.The mineralisation is interpreted to occur at or near centres of basic volcanism. Garnet formation and uranium-rare earth concentrations are believed to be caused by the volcanism, and to be contemporaneous with it. The former is seen as alteration of a hot, saturated pile of volcano-sedimentary material and the latter as intermittent hydrothermal exhalation.Deposition, volcanism, garnet formation, uranium and rare-earth mineralisation, granile and gabbro formation, and tectonism are seen as a continuum of interrelated processes which operated throughout the period of format ion of the rocks in the Mary Kathleen Syncline.

Application of thermal oxidation is considered a promising technique in reducing fugitive methane gas from ventilation air methane (VAM). A typical thermal oxidiser operates with diluted methane and converts it to less potent greenhouse gases. However, having a thermal oxidiser in the vicinity of the coalmine exhaust shaft is a major safety concern as its high operation temperature increases the likelihood of accidental fire and explosion. The aim of this study is to investigate the application and effectiveness of side venting technique in reduction of deflagration consequences caused by methane gas. To address this importance a series of experiments were conducted on a detonation tube designed and fabricated as part of larger scale VAM Abatement safety project. The experimental work was carried out into two stages: examine the flame and explosion properties in a large-scale detonation tube to get reliable data; and then design and employ a venting system into the detonation tube to verify the effectiveness and performance of the venting against the flame and explosion.Results corresponding to this study show that the side vent duct with venting coefficient magnitude of 37 had a significant influence on methane flame deflagration and the explosion characteristics. The maximum pressure rise at the detonation tube reduced approximately 20 per cent to 32 per cent by applying the side venting duct. Also, the data shows that the venting damped the pressure oscillation after the flame deflagration which eventually reduced the system instability. Following considerations of the effect of furnace size on pressure loss, pressure loss in front of tuyeres, gas flow in the lower parts of the furnace, the distribution of the burden and the gas flow in large blast furnaces is examined with particular reference to the burden distribution at the throat and the gas flow at high production rates. Improvement of gas flow is related to application of super-high top pressure and the use of moveable armour. A brief description of the NKK type moveable armour is given and its use in controlling the gas flow outlined. The operating results under controlled gas flow show an increase in production of Fukuyama No. 5 BF from 9,200 tpd to 11,000 tpd with a decrease in the fuel rate from 490 kg/thm to 460 kg/thm.

The Esperanza deposit is located 120 kin N of Mount Isa, Queensland at approximately lat 19¦20'S, long 139¦22'E on the Camooweal (SE 54-13) 1:250 000 scale map sheet. It is one of several structurally controlled copper ¦ cobalt deposits developed along the Mount Gordon Fault zone and related faults, within the Western Fold Belt of the Mount Isa Inlier (Figure 1). Together with the nearby Mammoth orebodies it forms the basis of the Gunpowder operation of Aberfoyle Limited. Until recently ore was mined from the Mammoth orebodies by open stoping with decline haulage to surface leach pads. Leaching of in situ broken ore (in place) and surface heaps, followed by solvent extraction and electro-winning (SX-EW), produced copper metal on-site. In March 1997, mining was suspended at Mammoth and the focus of the Gunpowder operation switched to development of the Esperanza orebody, which is expected to begin open cut production in mid 1998. SX-EW methods will produce 44 000 tpa of copper from an expanded plant. The pre-mining mineral resource at Esperanza (measured, indicated and inferred) is estimated at 4.6 Mt averaging 7.7 per cent copper.

The rapid and successful development by Western Mining Corporation Limited (WMC) of a gold mining industry based on the deposits of the Kambalda-St Ives group, was the final chapter in a story that started some 85 years earlier. Although the exploration work that led to the development of the current mining operation took place in the 1970s and 1980s, the successes had their roots in the 1890s and it took three gold rushes, and separate uranium and nickel exploration booms to make the discoveries Possible.

Nickel WestÆs Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter operates three Peirce-Smith converters, each processing 110 tonnes of matte per charge. The vessels are lined with chrome-magnesia refractory with a mouth traditionally constructed from steel liner plates, protected with cast refractory. Mouth refractory is damaged by molten material and the action of cleaning solid buildup off the mouth. Once damage has accumulated, the mouth must be frequently maintained with hot refractory gunning or a mouth leak may occur. Such a leak requires a 32 hour repair period. A converter mouth redesign program was undertaken with the aim of reducing the rate of mouth damage during operation, eliminating mouth leaks and shortening mouth replacement times during vessel rebuild periods. An overview of the redesign process and operational performance is contained herein.

Several packages for the estimation of porphyry type deposits exist and produce acceptable results. Recently, however, the need for really trying to obtain maximum information from drill holes has prompted the generation of geostatistical solutions to the problem of reserve calculation. It will be shown that an understanding of a few key points is necessary in order for these solutions (variogram analysis and kriging) to he really ptimal. The most important new fact to be ecognized in open pit ore reserve estimation is that block models do not give an accurate rediction of ore tonnage when a cut-off is pplied but often yield an overestimation of p to 25%. When checked against extensive roduction records, geostatistical methods provide a practical solution to this problem. t now seems that the model used here gives he best possible results. Inasmuch as all arge deposits present very similar geostatis- ical characteristics only a few days of work re necessary to produce a complete inventory f these. The techniques used will be demon- trated using examples from five deposits and pecial emphasis will be given to the accurate rediction of tonnages of ore and waste using he new "transfer function" technique of G.

Aberdare North Colliery is situated on the eastern boundary of the City of Cessnock in the Hunter Valley, New South Wales. Although the area is now noted for its wines and vineyards, the district has a long history based on coal mining. The richest coal seam in the Cessnock district is the Greta Seam, a low ash, high volatile steaming or gas making coal. The seam, up to 10 metres thick, extends over a large area surrounding the city of Cessnock and neighbouring townships such as Bellbird, Aber- dare, Kearsley, Neath, Ellalong, Kurri Kurri and Stanford Merthyr. The Aberdare Colliery, leases, which extend under Aberdare and Cessnock townships, were first worked in 1905 and continued developing pillar panels until the mine closed on 11 Nov- ember, 1960. Coal mining to this time consisted mainly of developing pillars to the 2.4 metre parting and, in some areas, dropping the top coal to the 6 metre parting, thus leaving the pillars intact, the top 1.8 metr-es of coal be- ing left untouched due to the high sulphur content. In the world-class mining district of Morococha, epithermal polymetallic replacement bodies and veins overprint porphyry mineralisation and skarns related to subvolcanic intrusions of Miocene age, thus indicating ore formation in two different environments, separated in time or forming a continuum. The district covers an area of about 70 km2 in the north-western part of the Domo de Yauli complex in theWestern Cordillera of central Peru and is part of the Miocene polymetallic belt, also hosting the deposits of Colquijirca (Bendez· et al, 2008b) and Cerro de Pasco (Baumgartner, FontbotT and Vennemann, 2008). Multiple late-Miocene porphyry stocks intruded Permian, Triassic-Jurassic and late-Cretaceous sedimentary carbonate and volcano-sedimentary formations, as well as large mid-Miocene barren intrusions. Extensive field work and detailedmapping of different styles of orebodies suggest that ore formation in the area was related to the late-Miocene magmatism. Good outcrop conditions and superimposing of different mineralisation styles make Morococha an ideal location for studying ore-forming processes in a complex porphyry-related magmatic-hydrothermal system in which porphyry-to-epithermal transition occurred. Flow maldistribution in the iron blast furnace has been studied analytically by the use of the vectorial form of the Ergun equation and experimentally via packed columns and a cold model of a blast furnace. Experimental results are presented showing the effect on fluid flow patterns of the following types of nonuniformities in a packed bed: the increased voidage at the wall ("wall effect"), the decreased voidage at the interface between layers of materials with different sizes and shapes, and the differences in resistance to flow of bulk regions of a column with different sizes and shapes. The proposed theory is applied to the calculation of fluid flow patterns for these nonuniformities. Velocity profiles, as calculated from these flow patterns, were found to agree reasonably well with experimental measurements obtained via hot wire anemometry techniques for laboratory scale packed columns. Calculated fluid flow patterns are presented for blast furnace burdens which show how flow patterns are affected by (a) coke segregation and (b) the relative differences in resistance to flow between coke and oxide pellet layers. For the cold model study, calculated flow patterns are presented based on photographs of a given burden distribution. The velocity profiles calculated from these flow patterns were found to agree reasonably well with the velocity profiles measured from the cold Model.

The geotechnical factors controlling the design of the open pit slopes of the Pasminco Century Mine near Lawn Hill, Queensland are presented below. Pasminco Century is a stratiform shale hosted zinc deposit in the Lawn Hill Formation that is overlain in part by the Thorntonia Limestone Formation. Both the mineralisation and overburden is located within a competent rock mass such that intact rock strength and discontinuity spacing is generally sufficient to prevent large-scale slope failure by breakage through the rock mass. Rather, overall slope stability issues are dominated by the major discontinuities within the rock mass. The deposit is located in a structurally complex regime, it consists of a synclinal basin which is truncated by easterly striking normal faults through its centre and northern and southern limits and by an unconformity on its eastern and western margins. Deposit geometry and slope stability is further complicated by small-scale folding, a pattern of northeast and southeast striking subvertical faults and north easterly dipping thrust faults with their associated fault emplaced blocks of Lawn Hill Formation in the overburden. The large size of the deposit requires a staged mining approach with the excavation of both final pit walls around the external sides of each stage and interim pit walls along the internal boundaries between adjacent stages. The deposit geometry and major discontinuities control not only the final pit wall design but also interim wall location and orientation, excavation sequence and in some stages the excavation schedule. Two and three-dimensional limit equilibrium stability analyses were conducted using both deterministic and probabilistic approaches to determine appropriate pit wall design criteria and to select a suitable excavation sequence and schedule.
