Recently there has been increased recognition o'f the cost savings that can be achieved by the greater use of offsite preassembly for the construction of industrial plants. Preassembly is a method of construction which involves considerable offsite assembly of complete sections of an industrial plant in established fabrication shops. The preassemblies are transported to the plant site, often by large and oversize transport systems where they are set on prepared foundations, finished and interconnected to other sections of the plant as required. The concept of preassembly is not new, but widespread interest has been shown because site construction costs in all parts of the world have increased rapidly and often at a greater rate than in established fabrication areas. Particular interest has be focused on remote, isolated and inhospitable plant site locations. These areas require the import of skilled labour, the payment of high labour rate premiums and the development of infrastructure to support the workforce for the duration of the construction period.

Although a formal EES was not prepared for the WIM project due it winding down, CRA Ltd has been through the EES and planning scheme amendment process for its demonstration plant. Community consultation was involved with all aspects of this process. The paper outlines the WIM EES consultation program and provides lessons for future community consultation for major projects in regional locations with significant potential to alter the environment.

Technical applications of computers within the coal industry are expanding rapidly with an increase in the number of users and user locations. Collinsville Coal Company Pty Ltd is an example of a remote and growing user company which has a Telecom link to MIM's ICL mainframe computer in Brisbane. The Planning Department is one of the technical user departments at Collinsville, with a variety of VDU, plotting and screen graphics hardware supported by the MIM Computing network. Current applications involve the storage, retrieval and manipulation of borehole information, plan and map production, volume calculations from survey data and mine ventilation modelling for underground Operations.

The problems arising in the excavation of hard rocks with the use of mechanical tools consist chiefly in a slow advance rate accompanied by an intensive wear due to the toughness and abrasiveness of the rock. In order to allow the further extension of mechanical excavation beyond the limits of the presently available technology, the assistance of waterjet aiming at improving the performance of the equipment while reducing the wear rate of the tools, has been recognised as one of the most interesting technical solutions. The paper illustrates the improvement of the performance of both disk cutters and picks obtained with the waterjet assistance at the Waterjet Laboratory of the University of Cagliari on a medium-hard rock.

An airlift pump is fitted to the screw conveyor of a decanter type centrifuge in order to pump out soft cakes which are difficult to discharge from a standard decanter. The new patented2 design improves separation performance and allows more stable operation, particularly when operating the decanter as a thickener.

Two suites of dusts (waste-heat boiler and electrostatic precipitator) collected in 1976 and 1980 from the Kalgoorlie nickel smelter were subjected to chemical and XRD analysis and were examined by SEM and optical microscopy. The spherical to sub-spherical particles contained oxide and glassy phases with small amounts of sulfide. XRD showed that the major phase was a mixed Ni-Fe oxide spinel with some hematite. These phases compared well with those predicted by thermodynamics. The particle size distributions showed that in the 1976 and 1980 suites 20 per cent by weight was respectively coarser than 60 and 115/lm (boiler dusts) and 40 and 30/lm (precipitator dusts). Maximum particle sizes estimated from sedimentation chamber theory were found to be in reasonable agreement with the maximum sizes found in the dusts.

In 1979, a test operation of an experimental blast furnace was carried out to investigate the behavior of a sort of formed coke, which was used safely by 30% of total coke charge in No.2 B.F., Sakai works, NSC, in 1975". The Mashec-type formed coke of 60 x 60 x 40 mm in dimension was crushed and screened so that it had the same size range (1011,20 mm) as ordinary coke used in the base operation. Preceding to the operation, some experiments on the properties of the formed coke and the effects of crushing on them were performed.

This paper gives a description of the research undertaken by an explosives manufacturer to give better technical advice to the Mineral Industry. Blasting Physics is defined as giving a systematic and coherent account of the initiation and subsequent effects of high explosives upon the surrounding medium. As a result of this work a mathematical model based on the gener- ally accepted mechanism of blasting has been developed. The mechanism and the resulting model are briefly outlined. IFrom'this model the effects of burden, spacing, blasthole diameter, rock and explosive properties upon fragmentation and heave can be calculated. Using these calculations it is then possible to see how variations in frag Imentation and heave can affect the overall production costs of a mine whether it is surface or underground. THE millng methods employed in the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company's mines are, perhaps, less known to the milling world than those of other important districts, due to the geographical remoteness and isolation of the Mount Lyell field,but they present many features which are unusual, and should be of interest to the mining engineer. Typical mining is carried out on an open-stope system, details of which are the result of local experience and evolution, and of which the outstanding feature is that the ground is so worked as to be largely self-supporting by virtue of domical form given to the stope roofs. It is locally termed "rill" stoping,' but differs widely from what is generally understood by that designation, chiefly in that the "rill" or slope is developed in every direction from a central focus, and not merely in directions followllig the strike of a lode or ore-body whose longitudinal dimensions are very much greater than its width. Such terms as "donie stoping" or "arched-back stoping" would be more appropriate and descriptive.The company's active operations' at the present time extend to the Mount Lyell and North Lyell mines, and, though the fundamental principles of stoping methods are the same in each, the dissimilarity of the ore-bodies, both in nature and mode ofoccurrence, necessitates considerable variation as to details to meet the respective conditions. The Mount Lyell pyritic body lends itself to the adoption of the .system in its simplest and almost ideal form, and a description of stoping in this mine willserve best to illustrate it, while later reference to details of practice in the North Lyell mine will indicate how it may be varied to meet more difficult circumstances.

This paper describes the application of the Total Productive Management (TPM) technique as a performance improvement initiative for a coal mining operation. It discusses the objectives of TPM, with the driver for improved production performance being the Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) of the equipment or process, and with the development of "ownership" as the behavioral approach to equipment management and continuous improvement through cross-functional and area-based teams. It illustrates the concept of equipment management as defects management.The scope for application of TPM to the coal mining industry is immense. The harshness of the operating environment can be a major generator of equipment defects, and a current paradigm in the industry accepts these defects as an unavoidable outcome defining maintenance costs in this environment. However recent benchmarking studies have highlighted that maintenance costs per operating hour in some mining operations are more than double the vendor's estimate of "best practice". The paper refers to these studies which also compare maintenance costs of fixed and mobile plant and equipment to "best practice" outcomes in comparable process industries.

Location & Permit Status Three major Mesozoic Tertiary basins exist along the continental shelf area of southeastern Australia, known as the Bass Strait area. They are the Gippsland (east of the longitude of Melbourne) Otway (west of Melbourne) and the Bass (underlying central Bass Strait between Victoria and Tasmania). The total area, both onshore and offshore, is approximately 100,000 square miles. In March 1960, the Broken Hill Pty. Co. Ltd. acquired exploration title to the continental shelf areas of the Gippsland, Bass and Otway basins from the States of Victoria and Tasmania. The title to that part of the Otway Basin in South Australian waters was granted in July, 1961. Other exploration permits, being 8 miles wide in Gippsland, held by Woodside :E.) Oil Co. N.L., and 15 miles wide along the southwest coast of Victoria, held by Mobil-BP-Interstate Oil (Frome-Broken Hill Co. Pty. Ltd.), were in existence prior to granting the B.H.P. title. Subsequently, Shell, B.H.P., Esso and Magellan have been granted title to the remaining areas of the continental shelf in the basins under discussion. In three separate agreeme negotiated between 1964 and-1966, Esso obtained farm-in rights to B.H.P.'s Gippsland, Bass and Ott' Permits.

Longwall faces producing in the order of 20,000 tons per day of raw coal are presently running in the Houilleres du Bassin de Lorraine of Charbonnages de France. Production levels of twice that level pose some technical and economic problems of coal cutting, ventilation, coal and equipment transportation in the.face and from the face to the sur- face. The peak productions of the equipment in use today, the results of trials with new equipment, the utili- sation of forecasting models (some in the form of software), allow us to fo- resee feasable technical solutions to these problems. They will first be considered in the best possible context (thick- ness, dip, non gassy, soft coal, good strata, no faults). This will give. the necessary conditions to reach daily output'of that level. A sensitivity analysis of these- figures to the effective natural con- ditions will then be undertaken and the implication of such a project on health and safety (dust, climate ...) will be carefully considered. A concise technical and econo- mical approach will permit us to fore- cast the economical interferences of such production units and specially the consequences of sudden variations of the output (downtimes, failures, etc). From this investigation, goals for technological development and re- search areas will be outlined to be able to reach this production target in the XXIst century.

In the mineral processing industry solid-liquid separation within a thickener usually requires the addition of a synthetic flocculant to enhance the settling rate of fine particles. The characteristics of the resulting flocculated suspensions may vary considerably depending upon the physical and chemical conditions which prevail during the flocculation process. For example, parameters such as flocculant type, dosage and solution concentration, surface chemical characteristics of particles and the suspension agitation conditions can influence the degree to which the particles aggregate. Aggregated suspensions exhibit various structures, and range from those composed of small, dense aggregates to those containing large, voluminous aggregates. The size distribution and structural type of the aggregates which form within the feed-well of a thickener can have a dramatic effect upon overall thickener performance. Thickener performance cannot be optimized without optimization of the aggregate structure produced in the feed by synthetic flocculant addition. This has required the development of new techniques to quantify the nature of aggregated suspensions, details of which are presented in this paper.

Infrared and Raman spectroscopy have been used to study a range of solid state and aqueous solution species which are of interest in extractive metallurgy. In the solid state new Cu(II)/CN'/NH3 complexes have been detected, iron impurities in kaolin characterised, aluminium substitution in hematite and goethite quantified, and the crystallinity and orientation of zircon determined in heterogeneous crystals. In aqueous solution metal cyanide complexes and equilibria were readily characterised, the thermal decomposition of SO2 monitored and products identified, and complexation of AI(III) by hydroxycarboxylates observed. Attempts to monitor the early stages of the gelling of silicate solutions were less successful, with only changes in the gel being detected. However, the degradation of 12-tungstosilicic acid was readily monitored as a function of both time and pH.

The average installed refrigeration capacity on South African gold mines has increased by about eighteen per cent annually for the past 15 years; both the number of installations and their duties have increased. One consequence of these large refrigeration installations is that careful attention must be paid to the system for distributing cold water. In these distribution systems, devices which minimize the temperature rise of the water delivered to the underground workings and which also reduce the pumping requirements for returning the water back to surface are used. In this paper the suitability of these various devices are examined and with the aid of a specially developed computer program their optimum operating conditions are determined. In addition the optimum combination of surface and underground refrigeration plants is examined for a hypothetical mine at various depths and the importance of pump efficiency on total distribution costs is discussed.

Host minerals for gold have been of great interest to exploration geologists and metallurgists for a variety of reasons. The depletion of high grade ores in many parts of the world requires that greater attention be given to the study of host min-erals for gold. Some host minerals have been employed in exploration as traces for gold. They are also essential in the design of extraction processes for treating gold ores.This paper reviews the mineralogy of important gold deposits of Papua New Guinea (PNG), Indonesia and New Zealand and focuses attention on the ore minerals and rock-forming minerals that host gold.

The price of oil and other minerals may not make the costly business of offshore exploration seem -attractive at present. There is little doubt that the future search for the strategic resources will tend towards deeper waters particularly on the continental slope margins. In addition with the realisation that active tectonic environments (eg the Makassar Straits) cannot be excluded as potential hydrocarbon sources there is an increasing demand by the explorationists for deep water survey capability. Such deep water research has until recently been restricted to a few specialised academic institutions ;however with the anticipated extra, demand from other institutions, companies, and government agencies, Marconi Underwater Systems Limited (MUSL)and the Institute of Oceanographic Sciences in the UK have come together to allow MUSL to provide the deep water mapping system GLORIA on a commercial basis -for the first time. The GLORIA package comprises a deep water(more than 400m) side scan sonar system which, by operating at a frequency around 6.4 kHz can insonify swathes on the seafloor up to 60 km wide. In addition, single channel seismic, 3.5 kHz high resolution profiles, precision echo sounding, magnetic and gravimetric data all combine to provide as complete a regional interpretation as possible. The GLORIA system combines surveying at a reconnaissance level, covering as it does up to 20,000 sq.km per day, with a very high reliability, so that even in- economically unfavourable times, it can-still be considered as an invaluable and cost effective primary exploration tool. Analysis of the GLORIA data enables the identification of areas of particular interest requiring more detailed study by the more costly multi-channel seismics at a later date.

Iron oxide-copper-gold (IOCG) systems of the Carajás mineral province (Amazon craton, Brazil) are structurally controlled by regional-scale shear zones and have formed by multiple episodes of fluid circulation and hydrothermal alteration in the Neoarchean (2.71–2.68 Ga and 2.56 Ga) and Palaeoproterozoic (1.90–1.87 Ga).Collectively, fluid inclusion, boron, oxygen and hydrogen isotope data and Cl/Br–Na/Cl ratios in fluid inclusions reveal that regional circulation of non-magmatic brines (eg evaporative fluids/evolved sea water) and mixing with other fluid sources (eg meteoric or magmatic) is an important attribute in the genesis of the Carajás IOCG systems. The ?33S and d34S compositions of sulfides from the Neoarchean and Palaeoproterozoic IOCG systems suggest that the ore-bearing fluids have assimilated sulfur from crustal reservoirs. The development of structural defects in the overburden material immediately behind a production blast was studied using surface and subsurface techniques. A significant increase in vertical and horizontal fracture intensity was recorded. The extent of fracturing into the highwall appeared to be dependent on the structural and petrologic characteristics of the various lithological units and the relative position of the explosive charges. A shallow zone of disruption to a depth of 10 m and extending to around 30 m from the newly formed highwall crest was recorded. Horizontal fractures in lower units of the overburden sequence were recorded at distances up to 50 m from the new highwall Face.

Optimising drill performance has always been a primary goal of drilling and blasting managers. Improving drilling rates and utilisation will ultimately drive the cost per foot or metre downward. Additionally, more consistent production will ensure shovel or dragline performance goals are met and the chances of machine idle time is minimised. Over the past 20 years, many studies have examined rotary drilling factors and performance issues. In most cases a common theory points to energy input versus drilling output. Indexes such as specific energy and total work energy have been -developed to quantify the drilling process. As general engineering principles dictate, energy is required to drill rock by overcoming compressive and shear strengths. Concurrently, the greater the energy input, the faster the penetration output. Therefore, by examining the basic drilling energy parameters, optimisation is possible. The principles of rotary drilling are driven by five factors. When optimised individually and as a system, drill performance will improve. Most recent studies all agree that a performance relationship exists between bit load, bit rotation, and hole flushing. Additionally, proper bit selection and most of all, the operator, can have a tremendous effect on drill productivity. By analysing these factors and establishing the best case scenario, an overall drilling system can be engineered to match the mining characteristics. Furthermore, by balancing these factors, a lower cost will be achieved through increased production rates, maintenance costs, and effective drill utilisation.
