The effects of process variables such as solution chemistry, flocculent type and dosage, intensity and duration of mixing, and solids type and concentration, on the performance of flocculation/clarification/thickening processes are described. System response is evaluated in terms of the specific effects on floc settling, supernatant clarity and sediment compressibility. The implications of these results with respect to industrial practice are discussed and general guidelines for direct application to plant design and operation are suggested.

In order to assess whether polysaccharide depressants are strongly or weakly and reversibly bound to the surface of talc, a series of experiments was conducted on New York talc in which the floatability of the talc in a microflotation cell was determined. The talc was conditioned in solutions of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) or guar gum in 10-2 ionic strength Ca(NO3)2 or Mg(NO3)2. The talc was then washed with four successive aliquots of water, or cation solution, to try to remove the polymer and the flotation response of the talc was assessed. CMCs of different charge (DS) were used to assess the effect of charge on the strength of bonding. The results show that CMC and guar gum could be removed to a large extent from the talc surface by washing with water (the floatability was restored), however very little could be removed from the surface by washing with cation solution. The higher charge CMC was easier to remove from the talc planes in the absence of cations than the lower charge CMC. Thus CMC bonding to talc has been shown to be irreversible or very slowly reversible only if cations are present, implying that cations are necessary to keep the polymer bound to the surface of the planes to effect depression. The presence of ions in solution also had the effect of maintaining surface coverage of the talc by guar gum.

The investigations conducted in the High Pressure Lab at the University of Missouri-Rolla demonstrated the ability of high pressure waterjets to excavate coal and minerals, disintegrate materials and as well as to comminute coal and minerals. Additional progress in comminution can be achieved if the compressive crushing principle commonly used at present is changed to one where particles are fragmented by the tensile growth of preexisting internal flaws or cracks, under internal waterjet pressure. This idea was studied in a number of tests. It covers tests with different jets imposed on coal and rock samples during compressive load as well as without any loading.

The Australian Broken Hill Consols Mine, situated some 600 yd east of the main Broken Hill line of lode, is noted for its rich ores of silver. In contrast to the vast conformable orebodies of the Broken Hill field, the Consols lode occupies a narrow fissure dipping to the south west at angles increasing from 240 through to vertical and transgressing the strike of the metamorphosed country rock at an oblique angle. This feature, together with the abundance of calcite and siderite and the virtual absence of silicate minerals in the gangue, has led to its classification as an orebody of the Thackeringa type (King, 1953). Recorded production during the period 1890 to 1903 is given as 845,000 oz of silver and 20 tons of lead.The unusually rich silver values of the Consols lode were concentrated at the intersection of the fissure with beds of amphibolite, whereas in the adjacent schists and gneisses the lode became markedly impoverished. From the surface to a depth of some 120 ft extensive surface oxidation had occurred, resulting in the breakdown of siderite and its replacement by limonite and associated manganese oxides.Silver halides, dyscrasite, acanthite and partly oxidised tetrahedrite were the main silver minerals in this zone. With increasing depth the lode material gradually reverted to minerals representative of the hypogene zone.The only previous work specifically on the mineralogy of the Consols lode is that by Smith (1922), one time manager of the mine. The internal stratigraphy of the Marillana Creek palaeochannel Tertiary channel iron deposits (CID) in the Hamersley Province of Western Australia was initially defined in the 1980s and redefined as the Marillana Formation in the early 2000s. Recent drilling, open pit mining and field observations in the Western deposits at BHP Billiton Iron OreÆs Marillana Creek tenements have revealed some additional details on the extent and detail of some units of the Marillana Formation stratigraphy in this area. The drill hole data at Western 1 South has identified a number of features either not previously documented in this area or whose significance has not been adequately recognised, including a denatured zone at the base of the Upper CID of the Barimunya Member, and variations in the lithology within the Munjina Member at the base of the channel. Additionally, the Western 4 pit walls show evidence of a significant near-surface clay horizon and overlying CID, which are suggested to be the equivalent of the Iowa Eastern Member in the Eastern deposits. The deposition of this unit was most likely driven by a regional climatic disruption rather than a change in sediment source area alone. The nature of the Weeli Wolli Formation-derived goethitic peloids in the Western deposits may explain the more extensive denaturing in the Western Lower CID of the Barimunya Member. In contrast, the more robust nature of the haematitic-cored pelletoids in the Central and Eastern deposits has resulted in a less denatured Lower CID in these areas. Such work reveals the value of and need for geologistsÆ ongoing face mapping observations and detailed drill hole logging, and cautions against not querying previously accepted interpretations.

An understanding of the importance of the different components that comprise a rock bolt unit is necessary to ensure the proper use of rock bolts as a means of roof support. The various anchors, bolts and plates in use in Australia have been designed and adapted for Australian con- ditions. As mining conditions change, so will the types of bolts in use. This is apparent in the development of chemical anchors and other recent innovations.

The use of oxygen in the Mount Percy cyanidation circuit was investigated, with the aim of improving recovery. Preliminary batch and plant testwork justified a plant trial, and it was demonstrated that the use of oxygen reduced gold leachable from plant tailings by 12 per cent, and was economically viable. Oxygen is now in permanent use. Other benefits of oxygen in leaching were not proven. There were no savings on compressed air costs and no measurable reduction in cyanide consumption, although HCN levels in the atmosphere above the tanks declined. The possibility exists that more efficient use of compressed air for tank aeration could have achieved similar recovery gains.

Semi-confined, trachy-andesite sills which overlie the German Creek Seam, within the critical tensile strain zone, form major groundwater hazards to longwall mining at the German Creek underground mines. The water contained in these aquifers is normally neutral, but highly saline. Techniques used to detect aquifers include routine air-lift pumping in exploratory drill holes, downhole geophysical and geological logging and upstage packer testing. Hydraulic constants are calculated from pump-out and pump-in test results. Hydraulic parameters for the calculation of mine inflow rates are determined from pump-out test results because these tests appear to be more representative of aquifer drainage during goat dewatering than pump- in testing. During mining of the first longwall block at Central Colliery, caving fractures intersected overlying aquifers after the longwall had retreated 40m, and mine water inflow rate rapidly increased from less than one litre/sec to 25 litres/sec. The amount of water pumped out of the mine during first panel extraction was 140 megalitres with drawdown occurring over an area of 168 hectares. In the Southern Colliery area approximately 324 megalitres of highly saline water which is actively stored in the Aquila Sill area will be pre-drained from six well points prior to longwall mining. With effective pre-drainage from surface drill holes, maximum inflow rate into the mine during initial goafing can be reduced from 165 litres/sec to about 45 litres/sec.

One of the features of modern life has been the increasing speed of change. We see this in many facets of activity, but in few areas more clearly than in the financial sector. The speed of communication and the advent of screen trading have made world markets one.We have titled this presentation "Cycles". It has been the conventional wisdom that Economies, Metal Prices, Equity Markets, etc. move in cycles. The objective of our presentation is to examine these cycles, to comment on the interrelationships, and to postulate where we are in The Current Cycle". We will draw conclusions as to where one should direct effort in the Mineral Scene over the next decade or so.Throughout this discussion we will use various terms to describe Time. The "Short Term" is typically meant to refer to the next six months: the "Medium Term" is one to two years; and the "Long Term" is the three to five year horizon.

Selected drill core samples from a Ferrobamba-limestone-hosted, magnetite-haematite skarn deposit, located in the Apurimac department of the Andahuaylas-Yauri skarn/porphyry belt of south-eastern Peru, were mineralogically and texturally characterised to gain a preliminary indication of the deposit's potential as an iron ore resource. Optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy/electron probe microanalysis (SEM/EPMA) techniques were utilised to determine the characteristics of magnetite, haematite and/or goethite dominated ore types, including variations in the relative proportions and textural relationships of the ore and gangue minerals. The deportment of elements deleterious to processing performance (eg copper, sulfur and potassium) was determined and the beneficiation potential of the samples was briefly assessed. In drill core sections, the ores are grey to reddish in colour, massive and 'metallic' to dark brown and earthy in character, moderately hard and porous (macro and microporous), with variable gangue infill. Ores often appear weathered, typified by ochreous goethite staining and common minor goethite (except in dense core fragments), occasionally exhibiting a more friable texture with coarse magnetite/martite grains. Silicates and lesser carbonate gangue are visible as blue-green to beige to white scaly and/or shaly surface coatings, and finely particulate infill, often goethite stained. Sulfide-rich ore types also occur in part of the deposit, but are restricted to specific drill holes. Magnetite grain size is relatively coarse, compared with magnetite from typical banded iron formations, whereas discrete silicate gangue is mainly bladed/fibrous and/or layered and micaceous in form. XRD analysis indicates the presence of vermiculite, serpentine, stilpnomelane, chlorite, actinolite and clays. There is a spectrum of ore types representing the gradation from 'fresh' (magnetite-dominated) to oxidised and weathered (martite/goethite-dominated). Martite-dominated samples are generally higher in grade, due to leaching and removal of silicate gangue, resulting in higher macroporosity. Where gangue has been leached out, partial replacement by vitreous goethite and/or hydrohaematite is typical, often preserving the fibrous/layered characteristics of the original silicates.

Discovered in 1896, the Sons of Gwalia orebody is located in a ductile mylonite zone within a sequence of Archaean pillow metabasalts and minor metasediments of greenschist facies which are variably sheared.The ore zone has good continuity, being 110 m wide and 500 m long, dipping 45 degrees east and plunging 70 degrees to the south to a depth of 1500 m downplunge. A strongly-developed foliation is present together with a prominent lineation paralleling the plunge. The mylonite zone consists of unmineralised chlorite schist and a 'U' shaped mineralised zone of chlorite-sericite schist with varying amounts of quartz-carbonate as veins parallel to foliation, boudins, and locally as massive quartz-carbonate. Pyrite is the dominant sulphide present.Grade control utilises RC holes on a 10 m x 10 m pattern, with infill blast rig holes 5 m deep where necessary.Some visual control of ore boundaries is present and, combined with good ore continuity and a knowledge of the structure of the orebody, enables cost-effective grade control to be achieved. To-date, over three million ounces of gold have been produced from the orebody.

It was demonstrated that the stable propagation of the explosive process is possible in low-density emulsion explosives (EEs) obtained through mixing of emulsion with a significant amount of expanded polystyrene (or other similar) granules. Such a process takes place in the form of a detonation-like wave of emulsion drops in explosive gas streams flowing out of the high-pressure area of the reaction zone.Chemical reaction in such EEs takes place in the form of surface combustion of emulsion particles interacting with the gas stream.A method was developed for determining parameters of decomposition of low-density EEs, and it was demonstrated that a gradual pressure increase takes place in products during the explosion of such EEs.The performed analytical research allowed low-density EEs (obtained through mixing of emulsion with a significant amount of expanded polystyrene) to be recommended for smooth blasting.Industrial-experimental blasts at quarries of Ural and Siberia, with extreme positioning of sides and using low-density EEs, have confirmed the viability of the recommendations given.The obtained results are useful in the advancement of smooth blasting technology using low-density EEs.CITATION:Gorinov, S A and Maslov, I Y, 2015. The discovery of economic uranium miner alisation in unique geological conditions at Yeelirrie, 700 km NNE of Perth, presented Western Mining Corporation Limited with a num- ber of sampling and evaluation problems. Carn- otite mineralisation occurred in a porous cal- crete-clay lithology in close proximity to the water table; background information on such a deposit was non-existent and sampling in these conditions could be difficult. The deposit was sampled initially by aug- er drilling with X-ray fluorescence analysis of drill cuttings, followed by reverse circulation and diamond drilling with analyses by X-ray fluorescence and gamma logging of the holes. Two costeans provided lithological and grade distribution data and mining experience in the deposit. Spoil from the costeans was stockpiled according to location in the first costean and according to location and grade in the second costean. Samples from the various stockpiles were analysed by X-ray fluorescence. No. 1 costean was extensively sampled by channel sampling of the walls and by pit sampling of the floor of the benches of the costean by back hoe. No. 2 costean was sampled by Geiger counters mounted in T-probes and by the gamma logging of auger holes to establish the valid- ity of the T-probe results. Samples were taken

Remnants of Plio-Pleistocene hot spring systems in Northland, New Zealand contain sulfide minerals, principally pyrite, marcasite and cinnabar. The climate is warm temperate to subtropical, with up to 3 m of rainfall per annum, and rocks are deeply weathered. Decomposition of the iron sulfides in natural outcrops and human excavations results in acid rock drainage with pH typically between 2 and 5, and locally down to pH 1. Deeply weathered basement greywacke is clay-rich and has negligible neutralisation capacity. Some overlying volcanic flows have resisted weathering, and pH is kept near neutral by relict secondary calcite in small areas. Natural rainforest soils commonly have pH between 4 and 5 over mineralised and unmineralised greywacke. Mineralised zones are enriched in arsenic, which occurs in solid solution (up to 1 wt per cent) in sulfides and phosphate minerals. Mercury also occurs in solid solution in some of these minerals, as well as in cinnabar. Base metals are present in low (background) concentrations only. Decomposition of the iron sulfides and phosphates releases the solid solution arsenic and mercury into the acid rock drainage solutions. Arsenic is readily adsorbed on to iron oxyhydroxides formed in acid rock drainage situations, and can be effectively removed from the biosphere. However, this arsenic is released back into the environment if the pH rises, as adsorbed oxyanions become less strongly bound and are displaced by hydroxyl ions. Behaviour of dissolved mercury is similar to that of arsenic but less well understood in these settings. Both arsenic and mercury are readily leached into pH 6 solutions from solid material collected from acid rock drainage sites. These observations suggest that neutralisation of acid rock drainage sites is undesirable in this setting, as arsenic and mercury will become more mobile in the environment. The naturally low pH of 4 to 5 of the forest floor, or even lower pH of natural acid rock drainage, is a preferable management option.

Improving the quality of the variogram helps to improve subsequent estimation and simulation processes. Two strategies for conditioning data prior to construction of the variogram are investigated using data from the Luce iron ore deposit in Canada. One strategy is the classic approach in which the deposit is subdivided into a set of structural domains. The domains are analysed individually and datapairs are recombined to produce a variogram. The second strategy is reconstruction of the deposit at an earlier stage of its history through unfolding. This involves transformation of the Cartesian coordinates into stratigraphic coordinate system. Improvement in the variogram quality, expressed in a decreased weighted deviation from a fitted model, is observed for both types of data conditioning. This indicates that, for the Luce deposit, application of data conditioning could also help to inform the selection of sampling locations.

Active EM subsurface imaging is a proprietary technique developed by Marschall Acoustics Instruments Pty Limited (MAI) to image subsurface features at depths useful for the mining industry. Similar in field operations to high resolution seismic surveying, the Active EM technique employs electromagnetic energy rather than elastic wave energy. Received backscattered energy in the Active EM technique is thus due to differences and contrasts in electromagnetic permeability and permittivity in the subsurface, analogous to LamTÆs constants in elastic wave imaging. Carrying the analogy to seismic imaging even further, the Active EM method employs high power transmissions of very wide-band coded signals of a controlled polarisation. Likewise, the array pattern and polarisation of the receiving transducers is also tightly controlled. Thus, in a certain mathematical sense, Active EM is the electromagnetic equivalent of high power high resolution vibroseis seismic surveying. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. The Permian coal in the Muja Coal Measures of Collie Basin of Western Australia has a subdued lustre because of the fine laminations of lithotypes, and the dominance of dull and dull banded lithotypes with minor bright, bright banded and fusinous types. The maceral composition of the coal is variable, however the macerals of vitrinite and inertinite groups dominate and the exinite and mineral matter contents are low. The lithotypes have low concentrations of trace elements and the boron concentration is between 10 - 100 ppm recorded only from the dull lithotypes. On the basis of organic petrology, the inter-seam sediments, flora and the very low concentration of boron, the depositional environment postulated for the coal is braided, fluvial and fluvio-lacustrine with marked fluctuations in the water table. The low water table in the environment accounts for fusain and inertodetrinite in the coal.

Oxygen was in restricted use at Port Kembla until tonnage oxygen became available for steelmaking in the open hearth furnaces. In adopting the new process various modifications to furnace design and operation were necessary and some of these, including increase in roof height and variation in firing and draft control, are discussed.The design of oxygen lances is also discussed and various steelmakingtechniques considered.Steel production increased with oxygen roof lancing-one- furnace producing 8,507 tons in one week-but new problems, such as rate of refractory wear, and disposal of fumes, were created.Design of future open hearth oxygen furnaces is predicted.INTRODUCTIONIn the post-war era, the availability of "tonnage" oxygen caused a major revolution in steelmaking techniques. Various pneumatic processes showed that steel can be madeat a very fast rate and that oxygen steelmaking can be applied to open hearth furnaces. Methods used are surface impingement with roof lances, bath injection with door lances, flame enrichment with fuel firing, mixed gas and oxygen firing, and enrichment of normal combustion air by oxygen injection into the flue systems.Owing to its previous restricted availability and high cost, oxygen was used in rather small quantities in the open hearth furnaces at Australian Iron and Steel Pty. Ltd.(A.I. & S.), Port Kembla, until about the middle of 1960.At that time tonnage oxygen became available and roof lancing commenced on No. 33 furnace at No. 2' open hearth shop.

The coastline is. an incomparable stretch of sea coast known as Ninety Mile Beach. Two gas pipelines and two oil pipelines carrying hydrocarbons from thb'Bass Strait fields to the markets of Australia cross this beach. They cannot be seen as they are laid in trenching stretch- ing many miles out to sea and the beach was restored to its natural state. Even where the dunes were disturbed, suitable grass was sown thus consolidating the sand and preventing erosion. Ninety Mile Beach is but one of the many key.wildlife and recreational areas that our operations must be concerned with. Others include Westernport and Corner Inlet, but the one discussed in this paper in particular is the platform area of the Bass Strait itself. Never was the old adage "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" more meaningful than in offshore oil production. All are well aware of some of the events of the past several years that resulted in large and costly oil spills. Far less is known, seen or publicised about the measures and developments that are undertaken to ensure that such events do not occur. We also have well developed plans for response in the event of an emergency situation, which can be initiated with great rapidity. Our responsibility is to ensure that with the best of engineering technology and operating procedures, spills do not occur.
