The B.R.G.M., through international experience gained over many years, has become very skilled in alluvial prospection, particularly for diamonds. The research laboratories within the B.R.G.M. have also been active in creating new mineral processing equipment,. some of which is directly applicable to such prospection. One such development, the mobile prospection unit, is described and -its application in mineral exploration is demonstrated by a consider- ation of the diamond search in Australia and the general exploration of the Massif Armoricain (France). Because this latter study was fundamental in the development of the concept of "mineral-geochemistry", and its application in mineral exploration, it is also briefly described.

The Westerschelde tunnel will be the first permanent road link between the Dutch regions of South Beveland and South Flanders. Two tunnel tubes, each 6.6 km long, will be driven using the shield tunnelling method. The difficult ground conditions and a water pressure of up to 6.5 bar make great demands on the design. This paper describes the problems and their solutions.

In Northland, New Zealand, localised large deposits of halloysite clay have been produced by in-situ alteration of rhyolite volcanics of Pliocene or Pleistocene age, which were erupted through pre- Pliocene sedimentary strata and locally through Pleistocene basalt; and which were subsequently onlapped by further basalt flows. Alteration to clay has been a result of both hydrothermal and of meteoric processes, and decreases in intensity of alteration with increasing depth.The raw material is crushed and fractionated to produce a product of less than 2 micron particle size, which is of exceptional whiteness and brightness. The unique properties of the clays render them highly desirable for specialised ceramic purposes.

The Jameson Cell is a high intensity flotation device, which utilises induced air from the atmosphere. It was developed jointly by Mount Isa Mines and Professor Graeme Jameson of the University of Newcastle in the 1980s. It is proven to generate fine bubbles, in the order of 300 to 500 ¦m, in a high intensity, high shear and compact zone contained in the downcomer. This aerated mixture exits the downcomer into the pulp zone, which is the quiescent mineral and gangue separation zone. A number of Australian base metal flotation circuits feature a reverse flotation stage at the head of the circuit. Testwork and plant operating data has shown that the use of a Jameson Cell in the prefloat cleaner application has further improved prefloat gangue recovery and selectivity. Operation of a Jameson Cell in a carbonaceous/pyrite prefloat cleaner duty at the Mt Isa copper concentrator increased copper recovery and reduced pyrite in the copper concentrate. Testwork at Zinifex Century Zinc Mine showed a decrease in zinc losses by the utilisation of Jameson Cell prefloat cleaner. Appraisal of a Jameson Cell in a scalping role within the Mt Isa Copper Concentrator indicated significant benefits could be achieved.

The low price of nickel which has prevailed since 1982 has dictated that unit production costs must be minimised. Early in the crisis, a decision was made within Western Mining Corporation to reduce unit costs by increased rates of production, not by a significant reduction in manpower. This paper details developments which have taken place at Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter to enable the higher production rates to be achieved, or to increase energy efficiency. It is significant that most developments were achieved without the need for capital expenditure.

The Bannockburn gold deposit is located 67 km north-west of Leonora in a poorly exposed part of the Norseman-Wiluna belt of Western Australia. The deposit consists of narrow, complexly shaped orebodies which have presented a challenge to find successful grade control and mining methods. The deposit also presents an opportunity to examine in detail the geology of this part of the Norseman-Wiluna belt.This paper discusses the geology and structure of the Bannockburn gold deposit as well as the grade control and mining systems developed to define the ore and extract it with minimum dilution. We discuss the different techniques employed for grade control in the past and their shortcomings, and the evolution of the present system of doing grade control in cross section from blast hole assays.

Jointed rock mass is often encountered in rock engineering and its stability has always been a major concern in underground engineering. To analyze the stress characteristics and their variations in jointed rocks, in this study, a new concept of sub-instability stage before rock failure is defined, and a new experimental method is used to investigate interaction between defects and intact rock of the jointed rock mass during the subinstability stage., Firstly, external characteristics of stress and failure mode of the whole jointed rock are investigated systematically by conducting uniaxial compression tests on red sandstone samples with a set of preexisting open flaws of different sizes, and the interactive damage of intact parts and defects in the subinstability stage was further studied. Secondly, rock-like material samples made of bonded plaster blocks were tested and internal data from stress sensor between the strong and weak segments were collected. The transforming processes from independent activity of the individual segment to overall interactive movement of jointed rock before the unstable failure were analysed. The test results indicated that the subinstability stage marked the beginning of interactive failure between the intact rock and defects. In the early subinstability stage, the relatively intact parts bore most of the load in a jointed rock mass, and the defects were damaged firstly which caused high strain around it. The areas of high strain increase rapidly, extending and migrating, causing damage to the intact parts. In the later sub-instability stage, the interaction effect reached its maximum, and a large number of cracks appeared in the intact rock and they propagated and coalesced. Intact parts experienced rapid failure and then the jointed rock failed. The experimental method used in this paper to identify the sub-instability stage could be used to identify failure precursors of jointed rock masses and to develop technology for disaster prevention in rock engineering. The excavation for the Sydney Opera House Parking Station comprises a large donut shaped underground cavern with a central sandstone pillar. The maximum effective roof span is about 19 m and the rock cover is between 7 m and 8 m. Permanent support for the roof and the various services tunnels consists of a combination of tensioned anchors, and untensioned dowels, and mesh with shortcrete and fibrecrete as the final lining. Steel sets were installed at main intersections.Fundamental to the design philosophy for excavation of these spans at such shallow rock cover was the use of monitoring to check on the adequacy of the installed support. Prior to excavation, extensometers, inclinometers, piezometers and surface settlement survey stations were installed. Underground survey stations, anchor load cells and shotcrete pressure cells were installed as excavation proceeded. Excavation commenced at the crown using an initial heading and three widening stages. Geological mapping during excavation confirmed borehole expectations, namely sandstone beds 1 to 4 m thick interbedded with thin shale units. Bedding plane contacts varied over short distances from tight partings to thick brecciated seams. Jointing was subvertical and joints tended to be bed-limited.

Ore deposit models form the basis for numerous other economic decisions in the mining process. The success of these economic decisions therefore depend directly on the accuracy of the ore evaluation process. The Geology Department at the Sishen Iron Ore Mine is responsible for the generation of a reliable geological computer model of the rock material with predicted grades. This information is then utilised for further ore reserve calculations, mine planning, production scheduling and grade control. Owing to a very complex geological orebody, grades and beneficiation characteristics differ significantly from sample to sample. This means that ore evaluation is a difficult process and great reliance is placed on computer techniques. An automated method, which is believed to be the fastest in the world and which can be used by mineralogically-untrained technical assistants, has been developed for the rapid location of native gold particles and other gold minerals down to 1 pm in size in ores, concentrates, and tailings using a scanning electron microscope. Searching of a 25 mm diameter polished block in 1 pm steps usually requires 3-4 h. Examples of the location of native gold and gold tellurides in drill core sections, in crushed ore samples and gravity and flotation concentrates, and in various metallurgical test products are given. The results have application in ore exploration, in guiding metallurgical test programmes, and in assessing metallurgical per- formance in testwork and in operating plants.

Close spatial relationships between the deposits of the Etheridge Goldfield (23,000 kg of bullion) and various regional geological and geophysical features suggest that genesis of the ore deposits was a multi-stage process that started with magmatic and metamorphic stages in the mid-Proterozoic, climaxed with structural and hydrothermal stages in the late Palaeozoic and terminated with an oxidation enrichment stage in the Cainozoic. Acceptance of this hypothesis permits classification of the Georgetown region into areas likely to contain deposits of the Etheridge type and those unlikely to do so. Consequently there is little scop- for the discovery of extensions of this field. However, the stratigraphic interval between the source rocks of the Etheridge field and stratigraphically higher host rocks of the Croydon field may contain disseminated replacement gold deposits of the Carlin type. The potential host (pyritic carbonaceous, and locally dolomitic siltstone of the Candlow Formation) is locally faulted and cut by granitoids and the extension of a mineralised, long-standing zone of structural weakness.

The calculation of the liberation spectrum in the product from continuous milling operations is a problem of considerable importance, and it is difficult to solve because the population balance equation must be integrated in two-dimensional space. Complete solutions require a very detailed knowledge of the complex interactions between the fracture patterns and the mineralogical ore texture when brittle particles are subject to impact fracture. Most of the liberation models that have been developed to date apply only to batch comminution processes and under these conditions the liberation problem can be studied in isolation. When the comminution is continuous and forms a unit operation in a flowsheet that includes classification and separation operations, the situation is very different, and then the liberation of the minerals must be described when single particles of known mineralogical composition are fractured. Important industrial examples are conventional milling circuits closed by hydrocyclone and regrind mills in flotation plants. This paper presents an efficient computational algorithm for the calculation of the liberation spectrum produced by continuous milling operations. The algorithm relies heavily on the detailed internal structure of the Andrews-Mika diagram. The modifications that are required to make this diagram apply to practical ore minerals, and the internal structure of this diagram can be established using single-particle fracture on mono-size, mono-grade material but suitable liberation models are essential to interpret the data in terms of the cross transfer coefficients required for the population balance procedure. Models proposed by Leroux (1992) and King (1990) are compared to experimental data.

The mine evaluation process, composed of the designing, planning and valuation of a mine project, is, among other variables, based on an estimated orebody model. However, as the information from the drill holes is limited, it is impossible to know with certainty the mineral content in each block within the estimated block model. Consequently, uncertainty about the value of metal grades, or other geological attributes, arises because of the lack of information at unsampled locations. This is one of the reasons why, in any mine operation, there will always exist a divergence between estimated and real values. Cut-off grade optimisation is the process used to determine the operating mining strategy (long-term production scheduling) that will maximise the total profit value (normally referred as the net present value (NPV)) of a mine operation. This is done by defining a dynamic cut-off grade policy which is constrained by the production capacity of the mining, mill and refining.Real options is a type of contract, written on real assets such as mining, oil and other natural resource industries, that gives you the right but not the obligation to exercise the contract. It is based on operational and managerial flexibility, which allow mine decision makers to react to either good or bad operational and economic events in the future. But, what do geostatistics and cut-off grade optimisation have to do with the application of real options in a mine project evaluation process? The objective of this paper is to answer the previous question by showing how geostatistics combined with cut-off grade optimisation are key tools for corporate/managerial decision makers, which allow them not only to analyse the resource/reserves of their projects, but also to generate operational strategies that can maximise project value by minimising the downside risk due to ore tonnes and grade uncertainties, while achieving operational and physical constraints such as mining and processing capacities. A real copper grade open pit mine project is used as a case study.

This paper examines the longer-term predictive capacity of the GAMSPATH computer program (developed by the Alberta Research Council) for a waste rock (sample MS) obtained from the Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC) mine, Kalimantan that contained significant framboidal pyrite. The model was refined by comparison with the net acid generation (NAG) and column leach tests to provide a basis for calibration of the model for both short term and longer-term reaction trends. The oxidation of pyrite during the kinetic NAG test using H2O2 provides oxygen directly at the mineral surface, generating a measured oxidation rate for pyrite of 1.16 + 10-6 mol m-2 s-1, whereas the oxygen diffusion limited rate in the leach column air equilibrated reaction was of the order 10-8 mol m-2 s-1 as calculated from the GAMSPATH thermodynamic database. Results indicated that the oxygen derived from hydrogen peroxide had to be included as a reactant (eg a reacting mineral) in the simulation to account for the direct availability of oxygen at the sulfide mineral surfaces. Optical investigations identified the proportion, particle size, and surface area, of framboidal and euhedral pyrite in sample MS. The reactive surface areas of the two morphologies were very different (eg ratio: 5:1). To manage these two different pyrite morphologies the GAMSPATH thermodynamic database was updated to include framboidal pyrite, with similar thermodynamic properties and oxidation rate to euhedral pyrite but with a particle size based on the size of the individual internal framboid microcrysts. This modification, with framboidal pyrite reaction based on the size of its microcrysts produced results that correlated well with the kinetic NAG and column leach test results when the measured (kinetic NAG test rate) and calculated (column test rate) pyrite oxidation rates were employed. This provided some confidence that the model could be extrapolated to indicate longer-term geochemical reaction trends.

A comprehensive field program was implemented to evaluate the internal structure and hydrology of two full-scale waste rock piles. The excavation of waste rock dumps for in-pit disposal at the two mine sites provided an opportunity to characterise the in situ properties of the dumps given contrasting geologic and climatic settings. The internal structure and materials within the dumps were observed and sampled as the waste rock piles were being excavated and placed in the open pits for permanent closure. The field program was designed to fully characterise the structure and material properties of the waste rock. The alteration of the material by physical and chemical weathering was also observed. Samples were analysed for paste pH, water content, grain size distribution and geochemistry. In situ density and matric suction were also measured. Soil water characteristic curves and saturated hydraulic conductivity were measured for representative materials. These properties were used to predict seepage pathways through the waste rock and the resulting outflow geochemistry using the finite element model SEEP/W. The materials in the dump at Site 1 were predominantly fine-grained in texture and highly weathered. The presence of dipping beds with alternating coarse and fine materials was evident throughout the profile of the dump. The structure of the waste rock appears to have an impact on the hydrologic pathways within the waste rock pile. The material in the dump at Site 2 was found to be competent and resistant to particle size breakdown. The particles range in size from clay size to large boulders with the median particle size being approximately 125 mm in diameter. The coarse-grained texture of the waste rock resulted in a loosely packed arrangement of coarse particles with little matrix material infilling the pore spaces between the coarse-grained particles. Seepage modelling for Site 1 was completed to predict seepage paths based on observed structure and hydraulic properties measured in the laboratory. The modelling showed that materials with a fine grain size distribution become the dominant pathways for flow through the waste rock pile. The modelling also showed that layers with high silt and sand contents are subject to the highest flow rates. Finer grained clay rich layers have a low hydraulic conductivity and do not convey large volumes of water. Alternately, coarse gravel and cobble materials are unsaturated under values of matric suction that approach the residual water content of the material and do not transmit liquid water. The seepage modelling together with the results of the geochemical analysis show that the dominant particle size that receives the most fluid flow and flushing ranges from fine sand to silt, corresponding to materials with air entry values ranging between 5 kPa to 50 kPa.

Prediction of ground deformation caused by soft ground tunnelling is an important problem facing design engineers. The ground deformations are caused by the closure of the gap formed around the tunnel due to the tunnelling procedure and soil intrusion via the tunnel face into the tunnel. There are three different approaches that are commonly used in practice to estimate the ground deformations due to tunnelling, namely, empirical methods, analytical methods and finite element methods. One of the important issues of tunnelling in urban areas is the assessment of the likely impact on adjacent pile foundations of ground movements arising from tunnel construction. The main objectives of this paper are two-fold: first, to assess the available methods to estimate the tunnelling-induced ground deformations, and second, to examine the effect of such ground deformations on adjacent piles. Analytical solutions to predict the tunnelling-induced ground deformation developed by the authors are used in this study. These estimated ground deformations are imposed on the pile in simplified boundary element analyses to compute pile responses. The influence of various factors such as tunnel geometry, ground loss ratio, pile diameter and ratio of pile length to tunnel depth are examined in this study.

This paper describes preliminary research on the application of Markov Decision Processes (MDP) to Real Option Valuation (ROV) and the optimisation of mine scheduling. The MDP framework is a novel approach to option valuation and scheduling in mining operations. A learning agent is introduced into the valuation process of an open pit, where prices and block ore grades have probabilistic values. The prices are modelled using a mean reverting diffusion process and the block grades using sequential Gaussian simulation. The agent is asked to learn which production parameters should be used in order to maximise the overall value of the project. The introduction of the agent permits a real option approach to mine valuation, such that the value associated with the robustness of a design to uncertainty can be measured. A simulated example is used in which there are ten blocks to be extracted under conditions of grade and price uncertainty. Using policy iteration, an optimal policy is generated and the value of production options is found. The potential financial gains from applying MDPs to mine valuation and optimisation are substantial and warrant further investigation.
