A fundamental study was carried out on super pit sulphidic gold ore to establish the most influential flotation characteristics which were subsequently used in the development of an optimum flowsheet to achieve best economical recovery of gold. In developing the flowsheet, consideration was given to existing operational constraints in the treatment of the Super Pit ore. The fundamental study also included an innovative diagnostic investigation to establish the location and value of gold in the major mineral assembly of the super pit ore from a metallurgical rather than a mineralogical perspective. This study mapped a metallurgical fingerprint of the major types of super pit ore in relation to the location and association of gold.

There are a number of major infrastructure tunnelling projects currently underway or proposed in New Zealand, including construction of new road and rail facilities and the refurbishment of existing road tunnels. These new projects have triggered a rethink of traditional practices in underground fire and life safety and local regulation.While there is a current surge in activity, tunnels have been a signifi cant part of New Zealand’s transport infrastructure for over a century. Despite this background, the new projects commonly face challenges that are symptoms of a national regulatory environment that has aspects that are inappropriate for underground environments. There are inconsistencies in local regional regulation and an absence of national guidance and standards relating to tunnel design. Historically, New Zealand has looked across the Tasman for guidance. Although recent overseas tunnel designs present learning opportunities, the adoption of international best practice and standards may not necessarily address local expectations or needs.This paper explores a number of specific matters affecting the design of road and rail tunnels in the New Zealand context, namely; the Building Regulations and associated local consenting processes and parties, and the responsibilities and needs of the New Zealand Fire Service.The discussion highlights the importance of a collaborative approach involving the designer, asset owner, regulators, emergency services, and other parties, and ensuring up-front clarity in design responsibility and ownership of residual risk.

Bacterial leaching of sulfide minerals are fairly well established in heap, dump and in situ leaching and the primary bacterial treatment of refractory gold concentrate using CSTR have gained industrial prominence in recent years. Three cultures, a mesophile T ferrooxidans (DSM583), a moderate thermophile Sulfobacillus acidophilus (strain YTF1) and a extreme thermophile (Sulfolobus strain BC65) were used for the biooxidation (pre-treatment) of the Porgera gold-bearing pyrite concentrate under optimum O2 and CO2 enriched air (30 per cent O2 and ten per cent CO2) based on volume ratios. The positive effect of using oxygen and carbon dioxide enriched air for the biooxidation of gold-bearing pyrite mineral was clearly demonstrated where an increase in Fe release rate by a factor of 2.8, 1.8 and 1.5 for DSM583, YTF1 and Sulfolobus respectively were observed compared with the shake flask tests. The lag phase observed with the other test conditions such as in shake flask or with air decreased by about 80 per cent for all three cultures. The average observed dissolved oxygen concentrations in the pulp for these tests were 8.7, 5.8 and 5.0 mg/L for DSM583, YTF1 and Sulfolobus respectively, indicating that O2 was not limiting in these tests. The pulp redox potential was observed to increase with time for all tests coincident with the leaching rate and reaching a maximum of 663 mV, however the maximum value differs for each strain, with DSM583 exhibiting the highest followed by YTF1 and Sulfolobus. Biooxidation of pyrite under optimum gas enrichment at different pulp densities showed near total Iron extraction occurred for pulp densities of three, ten and 20 per cent (w/v). At high pulp densities, more so at 40 per cent than 30 per cent (w/v), the leaching rate decreased rapidly for tests with YTF1 and Sulfolobus. Monitoring of dissolved O2 shows that O2 demand increased with increasing pulp density and the average dissolved O2 concentration observed for YTF1 and Sulfolobus at 40 per cent solids concentration was 1.0 mg/L and below, suggesting limiting oxygen and carbon dioxide conditions for these two cultures. The decrease in leaching rate observed at high pulp densities (30 and 40 per cent) under optimum gas enrichment was accompanied by low metal dissolution and low redox potential values which was attributed to shear stress due to attrition of cells by high solids concentration, toxicity of metal ions especially Ag and Fe and the formation of precipitates and jarosites as confirmed from XRD analysis of leach residues hence impeding the leaching process. Limiting conditions due to high pulp density and viscosity were only observed for YTF1 and Sulfolobus. The subsequent cyanide leaching for precious metals from the pre-treated pyrite concentrate in all cases shows the extent of gold and silver recovery increased with the degree of pyrite oxidation and Au and Ag recoveries in excess of 80 per cent were achieved compared with only 18.1 per cent and 35.9 per cent for gold and silver respectively when treated by direct cyanide leaching on the original, untreated concentrate.

Control of silicon in produced through the submerged-arc furnace can result in reduced power and coke consumption in addition to improving the quality of the hot metal. A thermo-chemical analysis of the production of ferro-chromium was carried out to devise strategies to control the recovery of silicon during the manufacture of ferro-chromium. The presence of three thermochemical zones in the furnace with respect to the reduction of silica was recognised from this analysis. Any strategy for the control of silicon recovery has to take cognizance of these thermochemical zones. The effect of various strategies on the silicon level in the hot metal have been evaluated. Possible strategies, such as the reduction of coke level in the charge; the replacement of quartz; pre-reduction of the ore and the control of the temperature profile are discussed in this paper.

Recent mapping (1989-1992) by the Northern Territory Geological Survey in the Tennant Creek 1:250 000 map sheet area has resulted in substantial revision of the lithostratigraphy of the Tennant Creek Block (Donnellan, Hussey, and Morrison, in press). Briefly, the former Warramunga Group (Dunnet and Harding, 1967; Dodson and Gardener, 1978) is divided into the Warramunga Formation, and an overlying less deformed volcano-sedimentary succession, the Flynn Subgroup. The latter is conformably overlain by the Tomkinson Creek Subgroup of the Tomkinson Creek province in the north of the Tennant Creek Inlier. These two Subgroups constitute the Churchills Head Group which is essentially equivalent to the Hatches Creek Group of the Davenport province to the south of the Inlier.

Solid EnergyÆs project evaluation process utilises a standard staged gate approach, with five levels leading ultimately to project execution (level 6). For a project to progress through each level, specific financial criteria need to be satisfied. Solid Energy primarily use value based (discounted cash flow) metrics to support investment decisions. Within this approach Solid Energy utilise a number risk-based techniques to quantify project uncertainty. This includes the use of risk-based probabilistic analysis using Monte Carlo simulation and probability-based scenario analysis. Figure 1 shows the net present value (NPV) cumulative probability. Project risks are identified through comprehensive risk workshops. The output of these workshops (list of key risks, ranges of uncertainty and probability of occurrence), is quantified within the financial models. Incorporating this risk information on a probabilistic basis allows an investment decision to be made with a robust knowledge of the range of possible project outcomes along with the likelihood (probability) of those outcomes occurring, for example 80 per cent confidence that the project value will be greater than NZ$10 M, 50 per cent confident it will be greater than NZ$50 M and ten per cent confident it will be greater than NZ$70 M. Incorporating risk implicitly into the financial analysis allows the business to easily evaluate/measure projects with different risk profiles. The detailed risk analysis does away with the complexity of arbitrary risk-based hurdle (discount) rates, as projects can be evaluated based on their specific risk characteristics. Whether a project will progress to the next level of investment and ultimately into implementation depends firstly on the value assessment in comparison with the associated risk/uncertainty, and secondly matching this with the businesses appetite for risk. At Solid Energy standard criteria are used for specific project evaluations, but in addition projects are considered on a portfolio or strategic basis also. Solid Energy attempts to maintain a mix of low risk (low value) projects with some high risk (high value) opportunities. The mix of projects must remain in line with the shareholdersÆ risk appetite. One of the keys to a successful investment decision is ensuring that the appropriate information is available to decision-makers so that they may proceed with a comprehensive understanding of the risks and impacts associated with the decision.

"From paving the way in gaining approval for the first metalliferous in-pit tailings storage facility (TSF) in Victoria, to developing a deposition methodology to optimise the storage capacity and provide a final rehabilitated surface which replicates the premining topography, in-pit tailings storage has proven not only to be a cost-effective means for tailings management at Fosterville Gold Mine, but also one which provides significant economic, social and environmental benefits. Coupled with ongoing raising of the existing above ground TSF and commissioning of a new above ground TSF, Fosterville Gold Mine have to date effectively used three open pits for in-pit tailings storage, with one of the pits currently progressing through the capping and vegetation establishment phases of closure.This paper presents the process adopted by Fosterville Gold Mine in their flotation tailings management, from design and operational phases through to rehabilitation implementation. Ashton Mining Ltd (Ashton) and Lynas Corporation Ltd (Lynas) have established a joint venture partnership to develop and process rare earth oxides (REOÆs) from the Mt Weld deposit in Western Australia. The deposit is located in a deeply weathered volcanic carbonatite structure that contains approximately two million tonnes of rare earth oxides at an average grade of 20 per cent REO. As part of the 1999/2000 feasibility study currently being undertaken by Ashton and Lynas, an extensive laboratory beneficiation test program was undertaken by CSIRO Minerals on diamond drill core samples from the Mt Weld orebody. The aim was to develop a flowsheet, based primarily on flotation that could be confirmed at pilot plant scale. The target concentrate grade was 52 per cent REO with a REO recovery of at least 35 per cent. Two main ore types, nominated as CZ (limonitic siltstone) and LI (nodular limonitic ironstone) were identified for separate laboratory evaluation. The lower grade LI-type ore overlies the higher grade and more extensive CZ-type ore. The majority of the work was conducted on the CZ ore; only limited testing of the LI ore was undertaken. The latter contains a clay component that will present difficulties in processing due to its poor filtering and settling characteristics. Two processing options for treatment of CZ ore were presented for pilot plant consideration. One (Option 1) includes gravity concentration prior to flotation while the other (Option 2) includes finer grinding and four stages of open circuit cleaning. The benefits of each scheme are discussed in detail. Neither has been fully optimised and the definitive flowsheet is most likely to be a hybrid of the two schemes, incorporating the best features of each. Typical metallurgical results from each scheme were final concentrate grades of 49 per cent REO, 10-16 per cent Fe2O3 and 3.2-4.8 per cent CaO. REO recoveries were above 35 per cent in both cases. Features of the processes developed by CSIRO were the inclusion of a gravity concentration stage prior to flotation, a modified flotation reagent scheme, a change in the method of feed preparation, and incorporation of magnetic separation to upgrade final flotation concentrates. Metallurgical results obtained from flotation tests on LI ore were much poorer than those obtained for CZ ore. The best rougher/scavenger result, with the limited amount of testing so far completed, was an REO grade of 32 per cent with a recovery of 28 per cent. Further work is needed to develop a viable processing route for this ore type.

THIS paper is not intended to be a detailed description of the lead, smelting plant at Cockle Creek, as this has been covered in previous papers for the Institute in 1918, Proceedings No. 31, by other members of the staff; but the idea is to give some of the practices and conditions peculiar to these works, also to give some experiments carried out and the conclusions arrived at. Unfortunately, owing to the closing down of the smelting and refinery plant at these works, sone of the experiments could not be carried to a more definite and commercial basis, but they are given in the hope that they may be of interest to members, and may perhaps suggest further thought along the lines indicated.ROASTING AND SINTERINGThe greater part of the ore treated at these works came from the Central mine, Broken Hill, but, in addition, a large quantity was purchased from other parts of New South Wales and from Tasmania. The presence of high concentrations of dissolved ions in groundwater, sea water or recycled water may alter the water structure, particle surface wettability and colloidal interactions between bubbles and particles and can have a significant effect on mineral flotation. While the impact of water quality on the flotation of precious and base metal minerals is well established, no relevant published study exists currently regarding the effect of water salinity on the flotation of rare earth bearing minerals. This paper attempts to quantify the effect of water quality variation on flotation recovery and grade of rare earth minerals and gain an understanding on which ions existing in saline water affect flotation behaviour. Specifically, it is aimed at investigating the effects of water quality on the flotation of monazite in the presence of cations such as Ca2+, Mg2+, K+, and Na+. Flotation tests, zeta potential measurements, and adsorption tests were performed to explain the flotation behaviour. It was found that monovalent ions such as Na+ and K+ have negative impact on rare earth minerals recovery and grade. The result of single mineral flotation tests showed that the floatability of monazite was significantly depressed in the presence of Ca2+ and Mg2+. The dilution of blasted ore with cemented backfill materials has been recognised as a significant factor influencing the economics of some underground metalliferous mining operations. Several mechanisms have been identified as possible causes of fill failures. The purpose of this study was to determine the possibility of damage as the result of one mechanism, that of production blasting adjacent to bodies of cemented hydraulic fill (CHF). A vibration amplitude transfer function has been developed to model the transmission of blast vibrations from the source, through ore, across the ore to CHF interface and into the CHF mass. The model may be applied in the near field. The model has permitted estimation of vibration amplitude at a point in a CHF mass, to which damage criteria may be applied. A number of assumptions and simplifications have been made to render the problem relatively tractable. Ore and CHF material characteristics recorded by a number of authors were utilised to formulate preliminary damage estimations. A simple application of the amplitude transfer model indicated that a zone of plastically deformed CHF would be produced, and would extend to a distance of approximately 0.5 metres from the interface into the CHF. A sensitivity analysis was also conducted, that indicated that the zone of plastic deformation would be more extensive given appropriate conditions. Recommendations for further model development and future laboratory and field investigations have been made.

Astute exploration on the northern Minahasa Peninsula, North Sulawesi, resulted in the discovery of the Toka Tindung, Pajajaran, Blambagan and Araren low-sulphidation quartz-adularia vein and stockwork gold-silver deposits. Combined, these deposits have estimated mineral resources in excess of I Moz gold at an average grade of 2.8 gAu/t and 7 gAg/t and are known as the Toka Tindung Gold Project. Gold typically occurs as fine grained electrum and is often associated with acanthite. The structurally controlled mineralised veins are hosted by Late Pliocene plagioclase and pyroxene-phyric basaltic andesite volcaniclastics and flows which form part of the Early Miocene to Pleistocene Sulawesi-East Mindanao Arc. Silica-adularia alteration dominates the volcaniclastic host of the Toka Tindung deposit. K-Ar dating of vein adularia indicates a 2.16 ¦ 0.04 Ma mineralisation age. Relatively narrow envelopes of silicification and argillisation surround the chalcedonic silica, quartz and adularia veins, stockworks and breccias at the other three deposits. Remnant hydrothermal breccias, chalcedony and anomalous arsenic, antimony and mercury indicate these gold deposits were part of a mineralised geothermal system.As of June 1997, Aurora Gold Ltd is finalising a feasibility study on exploitation of the four deposits and treatment of ore through a centrally located conventional CIP plant. Subsea tailings disposal is anticipated. Favourable metallurgy of the ore and logistics of the project area assist in minimising capital requirements.

The Writer's knowledge of this region began in 1912, while he was with the Geological Survey of South Australia, and, investigated the principles governing the occurrence of fresh and saline ground waters in the area then being opened for closer settlement by the railways under construction from Port Lincoln.These field investigatons for water were extensive rather than intensive, but other examinations covered certain mineral aspects. A summary of the more important work by previous workers is followed by brief descriptions of the rock formations and regional structure. Single pellets of mixed lead-zinc concentrate containing up to 20 % lead were roasted in the temperature range of 800-1100¦C. Variables studied included pellet size (from 9-8 to 3-2 mm diameter), gas flowrate past the pellet (from 0.05 to 5 ms t), composition of the atmosphere and the effect of additives such as zinc oxide and silica. After defined periods of time, the pellets were removed from the furnace, quenched and submitted for chemical, XRD, SEM and microprobe analysis. The oxidation of the zinc sulphide followed a shrinking core model. Temperature measurements showed that very high pellet temperatures were experienced at the start of an experiment but after 5-10 minutes these approached a constant temperature. The lead loss from the pellets was then constant with time. Thermodynamics predicted the presence of two bands of lead material in the reacted layer of the pellet. These were found in practice. The lead loss from the pellet occurred from the outer oxysulphate layer via the vaporization of lead oxide polymers. The vapour pressure of PbO, and the loss of lead, was dependent on temperature and bulk gas concentrations of SO2 and 02. At 1100¦C the addition of silica greatly reduced the loss of lead from the pellet. Physical factors such as pellet diameter and gas flowrate past the pellet affected the particle dynamics. These results were found to vary in accordance with the predictions of the Froessling equation.

WMC Resources Olympic Dam Operation located in South Australia, is a poly metallic underground sublevel open stoping (SLOS) mining operation with a current annual production rate in excess of 9.0 Mt. Stope size, geometries, geotechnical considerations, drilling and blasting are critical components in stope performance. These factors are further influenced by stringent ventilation requirements due to the presence of airborne radioactive contaminants from uranium mineralisation. Stope planning is complex and mass blasting methodologies have been trialled at Olympic Dam with the view to reducing the frequency of stope blasts, improving stope stability, productivity and ultimately improving overall stope performance. A key aspect in the ability to undertake underground mass blasts of this scale is the application of i-konTM electronic initiation technology by Orica. In the past two years in excess of three million tonnes has been initiated utilising this electronic technology, with an average blast of 250 000 t ranging to the largest to date being 580 000 t. By providing flexibility in blast designs, the use of electronic detonators has allowed mass firings over multiple sublevels. This has resulted in a significant reduction in stope extraction steps compared to conventional pyrotechnic firings. The benefits of this reduction in the number of stope blasts are wide ranging from improved stability of interim stope voids between blasts, reduced blasthole damage, improved blast vibration management and reduction of complex changes to ventilation systems for blasting.

The Northparkes copper-gold project is being developed in Central Western New South Wales approximately 30 km NNW of the town of Parkes and approximately 350 km west of Newcastle. The project is a joint venture between North Limited (80 per cent) and the Sumitomo Group (20 per cent). North is the manager. The basis of the project is three copper-gold orebodies, the northern two of which are being mined by conventional open cut methods with the third and largest orebody at the southern end of the lease to be mined by block caving. A fourth mineralised body has been identified in the centre of the lease. While further evaluation of this deposit is required it would appear to be amenable to block caving. Oxide caps of gold ore and copper-gold ore over-lie the two northern orebodies. Development commenced with the construction of a carbon-in-pulp (CIP) plant to treat the oxide gold ore. Construction of a flotation plant to treat oxide copper-gold ore and sulphide copper-gold ore is underway. When full-scale operation is achieved late in 1996 the plant will treat 5.0 million tonnes of ore per year of which 1.1 million tonnes will be open cut ore and 3.9 million tonnes will be block cave ore. In terms of annual ore tonnage the underground mine will be the largest metalliferous mine in New South Wales and the second largest in Australia.

The search for economic mineral deposits is becoming more difficult as exploration goes deeper in the established mining camps and spread out to the surrounding covered areas, which may have an `overburden' some hundreds of metres thick. Geophysics is finding an ever increasing role in such exploration. When the target is zinc, the task often becomes even more difficult since sphalerite, the most commonly mined mineral, is non-magnetic, resistive, and relatively light compared to other sulphides. Fortunately, sphalerite commonly occurs in association with other sulphides, which are magnetic and/or conductive and/or heavy, thus most zinc-rich orebodies have at least one contrasting physical property to aid exploration. This paper presents the physical properties of sphalerite and other potentially important zinc minerals. Results of petrophysical measurements of samples from various zinc-rich ores are presented together with examples of geophysical surveys over a number of zinc deposits. The results show that the physical properties are not merely dependent upon the properties of the orebodies' constituent minerals. For example, the small (0.4 Mt) and low-grade (five per cent Zn + three per cent Pb + two per cent other sulphides) Flying Doctor deposit at Broken Hill, New South Wales (NSW) is much more conductive than the large (3+ Mt) and high grade (14 per cent Zn + five per cent Pb) Cadjebut deposit in Western Australia (WA).
