The Pongkor Gold Mine employs 678 staff. The mine is owned by the Indonesian state company PT Antam Tbk and is located 100 kilometres south west of Jakarta, in Java, Indonesia. Mine and infrastructure development started in 1992 following intensive geological exploration over 15 years. First gold production was in June 1994. The mine comprises three main orebodies: Ciguha, which is nearly mined out, dips at 75¦ from surface to 150 m. Kubang Cicau, dipping at 80¦ from surface to 230 m, and averages 3.5 metres thick at a grade of 10 g/t Au and 128 g/t Ag; and Ciurug, dipping at 60¦ from surface to 300 m and averages eight metres thick at a grade of 14 g/t Au and 172 g/t Ag. Present global ore reserves are 4.6 million tons at a grade of 12.3 g/t Au and 133.6 g/t Ag. Exploration is continuing for new veins. Initial mining was by manual cut and hydraulic fill at Ciguha, followed by Kubang Cicau. In 1996, it was proposed to convert Ciurug to a mechanised cut and fill operation. Two single boom jumbos and three load-haul-dumps (LHDs) were purchased with the assistance of a gold loan from NM Rothschild and Sons. Implementation of this upgrade was delayed by both a national economic crisis and an invasion of the concession by illegal miners. It was not until May 1999 that raise bore vent rises and access drift infrastructure commenced. Major underground development started in 2000 and is continuing. Production cut and waste fill stoping started in July 2001. The change from manual to mechanised methods has required a total change in work practices and attitudes. However, the process has resulted in a production increase from 600 tpd to 1200 tpd. A three-month compliance test (a condition of the financing loan) was successfully completed, from July to September 2001, with an average production of 700 tpd at Ciurug and 500 tpd from Kubang Cicau.

Nickel laterite HPAL circuits are known for their complexity and have presented a large number of challenges to process engineers worldwide. An attitude commonly encountered by the author is that the beneficiation of the ore is relatively simple and that the difficult problems are in the realms of hydrometallurgy. On a number of occasions beneficiation has become the 'poor cousin' in the process design phase. Another common theme is that significant difficulties are encountered when beneficiation circuits are started up, invariably slowing the ramp-up of the remainder of the circuit. In some cases the problems impact on throughput for a long period and can require major rectification capital. The HPAL Ni laterite projects encountered each have their own set of beneficiation problems that need to be understood before an appropriate circuit can be designed. This paper will discuss a range of design issues including geometallurgy, ore characterisation through laboratory testing, the application of appropriate sizing and analytical procedures, the selection of appropriate unit operations, materials handling of plant feed and products and setting meaningful plant design requirements.

A probabilistic system for autonomous tracking of excavated ore in mining would be highly valuable. Currently, mine sites can have a vast array of sensors; examples include excavator load cells, bucket volume estimators and haul truck strut pressures which can be used to gather information about the excavated ore at different locations. These sensors can be utilised efficiently to increase the accuracy of mine estimates by introducing a real-time ore tracking system. This requires the introduction of a probabilistic ore tracking framework to consistently fuse information from any sensor input. Current modelling practices are manually intensive, deterministic (no recognition of the quality of data) and generally not a complete end-to-end system. This paper will provide a novel method for tracking extensive ore properties (mass, volume) and intensive ore properties such as chemical composition (eg Fe per cent, SiO2 per cent, Al2O3 per cent). This method is proved to ensure that correct correlations between states are conserved as material is transferred, combined and/or separated at different locations with any configuration of sensor inputs. This ensures that consistency of estimates is maintained and other benefits such as real-time probabilistic reconciliation can be implemented. A method for combining material of different mass and chemical compositions is also developed to enable accurate and efficient operation of the system. Representative experiments on a small-scale and a larger field trial which mimic the mining processes of excavation, haul and unload to ROM Stockpile will be used to verify the approach.

The gravity-induced stirred mill such as the TowerMill is an energy-efficient grinding solution used in secondary, tertiary, and regrinding duties in the mineral processing concentrator. The interest in this technology is emerging, with more than 300 mills installed globally in various grinding duties and commodities for the last 30 years. Although the technology is matured, there are still opportunities for improvement and the development of new knowledge to improve its circuit energy efficiency and reduce water consumption. Recent studies show that a combination of stress intensity, ore hardness, slurry density, and mill feed configuration can be used to evaluate the performance of the grinding circuit. A recent pilot-scale TowerMill test work at various stress intensities shows that a lower operating work index and size-specific energy were achieved at higher agitator tip speed and using medium size grinding media. These outcomes were confirmed through several site trials. A smaller 17 mm grinding media has reduced the operating work index and size-specific energy by 18 per cent and 11 per cent, respectively, compared to the 20 mm in a magnetite concentrator. Moreover, the conversion from top feed to bottom feed configuration has reduced the operating work index and size-specific energy by 13 per cent and 37 per cent, respectively. The circulating load was reduced by 34–38 per cent, leading to a reduction in the dilution water consumption in the hydrocyclone feed sump by 20 per cent. A variable frequency drive offers flexibility to change the stress intensities on the TowerMill, where a 35 per cent reduction in specific energy was achieved when the ore became soft. This paper explores the potential design and operating strategies that can be implemented to enhance the energy efficiency, reduce water consumption and reduce CO2 emissions in the circuit and finally evaluate its impact on the total cost of ownership.

In many cases, current metallurgical accounting practice does not consider the errors associated with the measurements used in obtaining the metal balance. Considering all measurement errors, including errors associated at each step of the process - from sampling and analytical errors to measurement errors in circuit instrumentation, can improve the accuracy of the final metal balance - assisting in the improvement of process performance, optimisation and control.The consequences of the inclusion of measurement errors on metal balance for different circuit configurations and typical metallurgical accounting practice (two product and three product formulae) will be discussed in this paper.Examples of the tools, methodology of implementation, and periodical metal balance tasks are presented to illustrate the advantage of this approach in meeting the different requirements of each department.CITATION:Brochot, S and Durance, M-V, 2012. The theory of sampling (TOS) is now followed in the development of near infrared (NIR) spectroscopic methods for the pharmaceutical industry. TOS has been the guiding light for a two-step approach for spectroscopic composite sampling available for the development of real-time analytical methods for particulate-based industrial processes. The two-step spectroscopic sample composite has been used in the development of process analytical technology (PAT), an important regulatory initiative to improve the quality of pharmaceutical products. The two-step sample composite approach overcomes the low sample volume analysed by PAT methods; one of the key limitations to PAT implementation in the industrial production of particulate-based materials.PAT methods need to be validated demonstrating their accuracy, precision, specificity and robustness. TOS provides a deeper understanding of these validation studies which involve discrete particulate material. The validation of PAT methods is now being performed considering both sampling and analytical errors, while practically all previous method validations only addressed the total analytical error (TAE) of these methods. This has been a crucial impediment for the field of chemometrics as well.PAT is a key element of continuous manufacturing (CM) processes, which are considered an emerging technology capable of increasing the flexibility, agility and robustness of pharmaceutical processes while reducing their costs. The outflow of the continuous process is a 1D lot, and variographic analysis has been shown to discern process variation from sampling and analytical errors in pharmaceutical CM processes. Thus, variographic analysis is a process improvement tool with significant potential for improving CM processes. During the 1990s, wider and more productive longwall panels were being introduced into the Newcastle Coalfield. The strata of the Newcastle Coalfield incorporate numerous massive sandstones and conglomerates, some of which formed the immediate roof of the coal seams being mined. The unexpected implications of introducing wider panels into this geological environment included more variable and increased subsidence, severe periodic weighting (with associated mid-face falls) as well as windblast.Subsidence prediction at the time was based on empirically derived data essentially relating subsidence to the width/depth ratio of the panel without accounting for actual widths, nor the impacts of variable geology. This approach required modification as locally derived data was gathered and reinterpreted.The interaction of massive strata located close to the roof of the mined seam resulted in dramatic implications for some of the operations. When associated with longwall goaf geomechanics severe periodic weighting events and crippling mid-face roof falls were the consequence. When associated with narrower panels and shortwall goaf geomechanics, mines in the region experienced aggressive windblast events. The relationships between the overlying massive strata, longwall panel geometry and the various risks encountered during this period is in the author’s opinion, the most concise still documented.As the extensive coalfields of Queensland turn to underground mining operations the relevance of these experiences cannot be underestimated. This paper will discuss recent developments as well as incorporating diverse subjects such as microseismic monitoring, low frequency radio emissions and ‘electrophonics’ as they relate also to the topic.Like Moriarty, massive strata can be disguised and can offend when you least expect. This paper documents a trail of crimes committed by conglomerate in the Newcastle Coalfield that were inflicted on the general public, miners and mining equipment. Although this paper concentrates on the criminal behaviour of conglomerate, this story is also relevant to other massive units such as coarse sandstones that may be more difficult to identify and apprehend. The HIsmelt technology was developed and proven in Western Australia (WA) after more than 30 years and several billion dollars of research and development. The HIsmelt technology was transferred to China and is now successfully operating at the Molong plant in Shandong Province, China using WA iron ore fines as the major feedstock. Several more plants are under construction in China, and the technology has been approved by the Chinese Government as an environmentally acceptable alternative to the blast furnace. The unique flexibility of the HIsmelt process offers multiple pathways to decarbonise the production of steel in the near future. These pathways include:  Use of sustainably grown biomass converted to Biochar to replace coal as the reductant.  Pre-reduction of iron ore fines using hydrogen or biomass to direct reduced iron (DRI) powder.  Capture of carbon dioxide from the HIsmelt off gas and geo-sequestration underground. These pathways are highly suitable for the Australian iron ore industry as they utilise:  The large areas of land and long growing season available in Australia for the production of large tonnages of sustainably grown biomass.  Coarse iron ore fines directly without the need for fine grinding and pelletising.  Existing oil, gas and other underground gas reservoirs to store carbon dioxide. The HIsmelt technology will allow Australia to transition from ‘Asia’s quarry’ to Asia’s supplier of low cost, low carbon and high quality metallics that are required to produce ‘green’ steel with net zero carbon dioxide emissions. In addition, HIsmelt pig iron can be converted locally into steel via electricarc or basic-oxygen steelmaking furnaces to supply all of Australia’s demand for green steel.

Digital optical microscopy (DOM) and automated SEM-based (ASEM) mineralogy systems (MLA, QEMSCAN) have experienced significant developments within the last decade. However these developments have been independent from each other and the two mineralogical techniques have so far not yet been integrated to combine the strengths and technical benefits of both analytical platforms. This detailed comprehensive mineralogical information is critical support for geometallurgy.Major hardware and software advances in DOM in the last few years have provided important new capabilities with potential applications to automated mineralogy. These technological advances have been largely driven by sectors outside mining (eg medical pathology) and have not yet been widely adopted within the minerals industry. The advent of DOM offers significantly more automated mineralogy capabilities than traditional expert-mineralogist driven optical microscopy. This is based on advances in automated image acquisition, high resolution cameras for digital imaging, imaging of large areas through mosaic options, integration of multiple layers and application of advanced image analysis techniques.Ongoing research involves combining the outputs of DOM and ASEM-based microscopy to create new capabilities for integrated microscopy based on development of advanced cross-platform image fusion and data integration between DOM and ASEM (exploiting the benefits of both analytical platforms). This requires non-linear image registration and transfer of mineralogical identification from ASEM to DOM systems using sophisticated image manipulation and data analysis software.Examples will be given of image fusion and data registration for a range of different ore types. Image fusion techniques are demonstrated using a porphyry copper deposit sample where sulfides and precious metals are classified using the MLA and gangue mineralogy obtained from DOM images. Data integration enables creation of a library containing optical property variability information for minerals identified by the MLA; thus reducing the reliance on skilled mineral identification by supplementing human interpretation

The use of rock bolts as permanent support has been prohibited by client specifications in several recent large tunnel projects in Australia. The justification for this appears to lie in concerns with proper and verifiable installation procedures rather than concerns with the intrinsic durability of the corrosion protection systems. However, in civil tunnels, preventing the use of permanent rock bolts for long-term support results in the use of cast in place concrete lining which in some instances would otherwise be unnecessary.

Three-dimensional granular flow models have been run to simulate three types of sample cutters: a cross-stream cutter, a vezin, and a cross-belt cutter. This type of modelling involves solving the equations of motion for large numbers of individual particles as they travel along a conveyor belt and interact with a sample cutter. It allows flows of bulk materials to be visualised and understood. Here we have used spherical particles. These results illustrate some advantages that modelling has compared to physical bias testing: By taking reference samples which are very close to the actual samples, the estimation of bias can be achieve quite precisely with very few runs. (Many Standards about bias testing recommend a minimum of 20 runs, but we have found that five runs generally provide adequate precision.) Potential bias can be divided into two components: the particles which are missed but should have been sampled and the particles which are extra but which should not have been sampled. This more detailed information can provide useful insight. Exactly the same material can be sampled using different sample cutters, thereby avoiding a source of variation that complicates physical testing. Much more detailed visualisation is possible, allowing better understanding of the bulk material flow in various circumstances.

Although significant advances have been made in understanding the mechanics of pit slopes, numerical modelling hasnÆt significantly impacted on the reliability of the design process. It is well known that legacy modelling approaches donÆt simulate large slopes well. In recent times, the emergence of very large finite element (FE) models with more than ten million degrees of freedom and the ability to simulate a large number of discrete structures, has allowed a step change in the simulation precision for slopes. The model size allows global and local effects to be realistically simulated in one model for the first time and the process can be better integrated into normal open pit slope engineering processes. Some examples of simulation of very large open pits are shown that demonstrate the challenges and some recent advances in modelling large slope behaviour. Significant limitations in the current measurement and observation regimes of open pits have been identified.

The Curragh mine has complex operating conditions. The mine operates in four seams to produce two coal qualities and is divided into five pits which have different qualities and coal preparation characteristics. The combination of all of the necessary controls to achieve maximum resource utilisation has necessitated the development of suitable software to assist the quality control engineering function. The required software had to be able to plan the optimum yield of coking coal whilst achieving the quality parameters for the coking coal and co-produced steam coal. The program has been designed to evaluate all of the mine faces available for coking coal production. The optimisation of coking coal production is planned and co-produced middlings steam coal determined. The optimum steam coal product is determined using the middlings in combination with bypass production.The computer software to carry out these functions has been designed by using an exploration data base as the raw data source. The program accesses this data and uses a coal preparation prediction program to determine the yield vs. ash relationship for each coal face. A linear program selects the optimum -combination based upon equal incremental ash values. The final output lists feed tonnages, coal preparation conditions, product tonnages and full coal quality data.

Territory Iron has seen fit to revive the old Frances Creek iron ore mine some 30 years after it ceased operations in AustraliaÆs Northern Territory. The key to this revival has been the changes that have happened since market forces, infrastructure limitations and a cyclone combined to force its closure. As it breathes life into this old mine, the Company is serious about its responsibilities to its shareholders, to its workers, to local and regional communities and to the environment. This paper addresses how Territory Iron has approached technical, operational and regulatory issues that apply in Australia. Some insight may be gained into the myriad of tasks that mining companies face to revitalise an old mine. These tasks vary from employing the latest exploration tools, best practice drilling, sampling and modelling of orebodies, optimisation of pit designs and schedules, maximising product value by blending, optimising infrastructure usage and minimising capital and operating costs. All of this has to take cognisance of commercial, environmental and other issues including Native Title.

The increasing market requirements regarding the quality of products, the enhanced predictability from detailed mine planning, the need for process consolidation and upgrading require continuous investigation on the characteristics of different ore types to be concentrated. This paper addresses the mineralogical and technological characterisation of several itabirite iron ore types and the influence of the composition and mineralogical associations on desliming and flotation. Pellet feed quality and the influence on the major performance indicators, such as weight recovery of slimes, selectivity index, metallurgical recovery, flotation kinetics of iron minerals and gangue is also emphasised. The investigation resulted in a classification of iron ores according to their mineralogical composition, morphology of the crystals, and/or texture and microstructure of mineral particles with respect to desliming and flotation performances.

A thousand writers have harped upon the wondrous nature of the inventive faculty. They realise that man is a creator, and that capital and labour alike are, and will always be impotent without machinery and processes that is invention. What Bacon has said is echoed by them all, "the introduction of new inventions seemeth to be the very chiefest of human actions. The benefit of new inventions may extend to all mankind-they make all men happy without injury to 'any' they are new creations and imitations of God's own works." My remarks will occupy another field I will refer to some of those features of the Patent Laws of different countries, which prevent the use of new inventions, oppress the development or inventive' genius, and diminish human happiness and progress' Wherever Patent Laws are framed and administered upon wrong principles, these results are inevitably found. A concise, complete, common-sense comparison of the chief Patent Laws of the world cannot easily be found but to avoid seeing scrappy, misleading references to Patent Law in the press particularly the English-would be equally difficult. Writers who are considered authorities so frequently make minor issues prominent and so uniformly fail to give weight to fundamental principles that the effect on the public is to mislead.

Anglo Platinum is the worldÆs largest producer of platinum group metals, and also produces large quantities of nickel, copper and cobalt at its Refining complex in Rustenburg, South Africa. In 1995 Anglo Platinum embarked on a smelter modernisation project, primarily to reduce site emissions to below the guideline limit of 20 tonnes per day SO2, but also to increase the converting capacity in line with future projected production profiles. To achieve these requirements the existing Pierce Smith converters were replaced with a single large Ausmelt converter and a new acid plant. This was the first time that an Ausmelt furnace had been used for converting, but it had the advantages of being a very robust furnace and was fully enclosed, giving good gas capture. It was thus considered the most appropriate technology from both a process and an environmental perspective. It also enabled the smelting and converting furnaces to be decoupled. The plant was commissioned from late 2001 and the first tap was in June 2002. Despite being a new technology, ramp-up has been similar to other large scale pyrometallurgical operations. Numerous process improvements have been made since start-up, most notably a change from two-stage batch to fully continuous, resulting in the plant now operating above design in terms of throughput. Optimisation of freeboard accretion control was also a major component of the ramp-up activity. This paper discusses the commissioning and ramp-up issues of the new Ausmelt converting furnace, concentrating on the design and process changes, and summarises current operating performance against the original design objectives.

In May 2018 Kasbah Resources Limited (“Kasbah”) completed an ore sorting test work program which was a precursor to releasing in July 2018 an updated Definitive Feasibility Study (“DFS”) for the Achmmach Tin Project in Morocco, which it is proposing to develop along with its joint venture partners. The testwork program evaluated ore sorting as a pre-concentration option to achieve early elimination of gangue and the low-grade component of ROM feed, thereby potentially:  Significantly upgrading the head grade of tin to the downstream processing plant.  Significantly reducing the required throughput capacity (and projected capital expenditure) of the downstream processing plant.  Reducing total consumables, power and water requirements in downstream processing.  Increasing the recovery of tin in the gravity and flotation circuit due to the higher feed grade achievable with ore sorting.  Reducing tailings tonnage, tailings cost and environmental footprint.  Using sorter rejects for mine backfill or road base applications. Key aspects of the design of the metallurgical testwork program centred around the need to ensure that samples representative of ROM ore feed (including projected mining dilution) were selected for the ore sorting testwork. The design and implementation of the ore sorting bulk testwork program is described, as well as a summary of the test work results and a discussion of the enhancement of the project economics reported by Kasbah, which led the company to adopt ore sorting as part of the proposed processing circuit in the updated 2018 DFS.

The commonly accepted genetic theories of Pilbara iron ores and Woodie Woodie manganese ores have often presented them as quite unique. This apparent uniqueness is not confined to just iron and manganese, but is also seen in gold and copper deposits in Western Australia. The published material on iron and manganese ores would seem to have either a quite complicated genesis or none at all. An alternate theory for the origin of these deposits is presented which involves a protore with simple oxidation and pH controls with hydrothermal fluid sources from the diagenesis and dewatering of the underlying strata. This theory explains the distribution, thinning, cold dolerites and very high concentrations of deleterious minerals observed in these deposits. This genesis system is also related to the systems that deposit hydrothermal gold and copper in sediments in the region.This paper presents the author’s observations, sampling and mapping after several decades studying and exploring for the minerals in Australia and locations overseas. All of these theories were developed with (or in spite of!) the guidance of Mal Kneeshaw, but would never have seen the light of day without him and the others presenting here. It is not what I would call scientifically polished, and possibly deserves more detailed studies; it is, however, presented as a discussion paper.CITATION:Schwann, P B, 2015.
