In line with the recommendations of The AusIMM/AMIC Joint Committee Report in 1981 Isa Mine ore reserves are quoted in proven and probable categories (recoverable ore reserves). Internal reporting considers geological mining and extraction reserves in terms of proven and probable categories. Proven reserves are subdivided into detailed and confirmed ore. External reporting includes a possible ore category (not a reserve). The basis for these divisions is the spatial distribution of sampling data. Proven ore is defined by data 80m apart or less and probable ore by data 80m to 150m apart. Within the proven ore category detailed ore is defined by data 40m apart or less and confirmed ore by data 40m to 80m apart. Kriging is used to provide tonnage and grade information for the currently producing 1100 and 1900 orebodies. Kriged cross sections are initially produced to coincide with existing geological sections and are used for stope design. Stope ore reserves calculations are ideally performed at three discrete design stages, which in order of increasing accuracy are: preliminary design (PD), final design (FD) and ring design (RD). At each of these stages Kriged meshes incorporating the most recent sampling information are produced for reserve calculations. Historically derived mining and extraction factors are applied both to global reserves and individual stope reserves to reflect changes in geological and mining conditions as well as the sequencing of extraction. These factorised reserves are then inserted into the computerised reserves inventory system (RIN). Monitoring of individual stope performance continues into the production stage with input from planning, research, survey and production personnel. This allows actual extraction factors to be derived for comparison with predicted factors, providing some measure of stope performance.

Fission track thermochronology is a well established method for reconstructing the thermal histories of rocks with particularly important applications in tectonic studies, detecting low-grade thermal events, sedimentary basin analysis and resource exploration. These applications take advantage of the limited stability of fission tracks, especially in apatite, when exposed to the temperatures found in the upper 3-4 km of the crust. Apparent fission track ages in apatites can define an invisible 'stratigraphy' in otherwise homogeneous rock masses that can give valuable information on thermal, tectonic and erosional events. Quantitative modelling of the thermal annealing of tracks in apatite shows that distinctive profiles of apparent fission track age can be related to a number of simple thermal history styles. The main types of profile observed tend to be either an essentially linear decrease of apparent age with increasing depth, which relates to continuous uplift and denudation, or a concave-upwards profile produced by partial annealing in environments of tectonic stability or burial. More complex thermal histories produce compound profiles which are essentially just combinations of these two elements. Track length information allows the apparent age profiles to be interpreted in much greater detail. Examples of the major profile types have now been identified in various geological environments and can be analysed to give information about, for example, uplift and denudation rates, the timing of uplift or low-grade thermal events and maximum palaeotemperatures experienced during burial.

"Robustness can be defined as the ability of a system to resist change without adapting its initial stable configuration. Robust design methodology, which is widely accepted in the manufacturing industry, allows the establishment of robustness and reliability metrics in scenario analysis.In the mining industry, a mine can be considered as a system with design parameters such as processing plant and mining capacities. Traditionally, a limited number of scenario iterations are performed in an attempt to determine optimal capacity values. An important strategic decision such as process plant capacity in particular is made during the very early stages of a mining study, often based on a low level of information. Lack of time and tools to run and analyse a larger number of possible scenarios for different design parameter combinations are usually the main reasons for not performing a full analysis. In addition, the uncertainty of other mining study input parameters creates more risk in decision-making.With advances in technology, it is now possible to automate the process of generating several thousands of scenarios in an affordable and timely manner. This allows performing the results analysis and assessing robustness and reliability criteria within a reasonable time frame. It is possible to generate a surface of results based on the net present value (NPV) for each scenario. This surface will reflect the efficiency level of the capture of the economic rent for each production scale. In addition, each scenario can be tested under diverse conditions of volatility of other external variables such as prices, costs or recoveries for example.This paper aims to establish a methodology that applies robustness criteria to determine the best scenario on several surfaces of value, which is then assessed with real data from a mining project. Obtained results demonstrate the advantages of using the proposed methodology in dealing with the above-mentioned multidimensional problems. Intensive exploration for iron ore in the banded iron-formations (BIF) of the Pilbara region of Western Australia began in the early sixties and almost immediately established the Hamersley area as a major iron province. The early genetic models for the BIF-hosted ores were based mainly on macroscopic examinations of ores from the "hardcap" zone, and generally accepted a direct relationship with weathering effects on a Mesozoic to Tertiary land surface. Brandt (1964) was the first to suggest a difference in age between the high-grade hematite ores and the more common hematite-goethite types. He initially accepted a supergene origin for both, but later opted for a hydrothermal origin for the hematite ores. Apart from MacLeod (1966), the published views of the next decade reflect a largely parochial interpretation of individual ore bodies, centred mainly on supergene models but with some support for hydrothermal concepts. Except for Ayres (1971), none of the models were backed by detailed mineragraphic data. In 1976, an AMIRA-sponsored CSIRO group began a Province-wide investigation of the wide variety of ore types and BIF, with emphasis on geochemical and textural studies. The resulting conceptual model for a world-wide unified supergene and supergene-metamorphic hypothesis is generally accepted in the Hamersleys.

From 1980 to February 1991 the Rosebery concentrator purchased ore from Aberfoyle's Que River Mine. Following the termination of the contract the concentrator reverted to treating Rosebery ore alone. Since that time it has become apparent that the circuit configuration employed was no longer optimum for zinc metallurgy. The circuit was designed to treat a difficult, slow floating sphalerite; however, the opposite was now found to be true. The sphalerite is fast floating and the circuit was cumbersome. During 1992 extensive circuit changes led to the provision of a simple open circuit flow sheet. The circuit is now easier for operators to understand and lends itself to improvements in process control. Middlings streams have been minimised, which produces a far more stable circuit. Significantly, it must be noted that the key to achieving potential results must lie in reducing variations within the process. A significant ore characterisation program has been undertaken, providing an insight into the metallurgical compatability of the ore to be mined. Using the information collected in this program, metallurgical recoveries and grades can now be predicted with a geater accuracy. Ore characterisation data suggests that an improvement from a 54 per cent zinc concentrate to a 57 per cent zinc concentrate should be achievable. By understanding the size-by-size mineral assemblage, a strategy for concentrate grade improvement has been developed. The requirements of the customer must in all cases determine the quality of the product. Pasminco is a fully-integrated zinc producer and as such significant gains can result by tailoring the concentrates to suit the Smelters.

Pyrite is one of the principal Au-bearing minerals in refractory gold ores. Significantly high Au concentrations of up to 5200 ppm are present in pyrite. Pyrite hosting high levels of Au is also enriched in As. Pyrite as an unwanted mineral ends up in wastes and constitutes one of the primary sources of As in the mining and metallurgical wastes. Arsenic can be readily released to the environment due to rapid oxidative dissolution of the host pyrite under atmospheric conditions. In order to determine the form and occurrence of arsenic in pyrite, micro-X-ray absorption fine-structure spectroscopy (XAFS) spectra were collected from a range of arsenical pyrite grains having different morphologies and a range of arsenic and gold concentrations. All the pyrite grains are characterised by the dominant edge aligned with As-1 valence state. In pyrite, arsenic atoms substitute for S atoms that are in six-fold coordination about each Fe atom. XAFS data suggest that As atoms occur in clusters within the pyrite structure. In addition to As-1, fine-grained, inclusion-rich and framboidal-type pyrite grains have a second As species at ~11 875 eV corresponding to As5+. This As5+ species in pyrite is highly variable and attributed to the oxidation of arsenic exposed on the surfaces of pyrite.

Alliancing is a contractual relationship in which organisations with an interest in a project are brought together in an atmosphere of co-operation to produce superior results to benefit all of the participants. Fundamental to the concept is the management of the risks associated with the project. The traditional risk management strategy adopted by clients has been to transfer this risk to others in the belief that this will result in the lowest overall project cost. It is assumed that competition in the market place will allow these risks to be transferred without paying a premium. However, this approach often results in the development of an adversarial climate, a high level of litigation, time and cost overruns and an overall poor project outcome. Under an alliancing arrangement the parties (client, designer and contractor) are aligned through shared interests in the projectÆs success by linking profitability to performance. Under such an arrangement, an atmosphere is created whereby the participants are motivated to focus on cost-savings, pursue best value and to innovate. Successful alliancing can result in highly motivated project teams and realisation of extraordinary productivity and cost-savings flowing from increased efficiencies. The situations in which alliancing can be successful are discussed with particular reference to the Wandoo Alliance which successfully completed the $375 million Wandoo B offshore oil platform in record time and with considerable savings to the project budget.

The problems associated with underground mining continue to grow in size and complexity. As a result mine management is becoming aware of the benefits that can be achieved through the use of computer-oriented tools for system analysis. When such tools are employed in conjunction with benchmarking practices, the drivers of the system that lead to superior performance can more easily be determined. This paper discusses the use of the Simulation Language for Alternative Modelling (SLAM II) in the determination of the drivers of an underground room-and-pillar mining system. The mining operations included in the model consist of extracting, loading and hauling of the coal using continuous mining equipment in a room and pillar system. Equipment specifications and mining techniques used in the model are based upon current methods employed at the existing underground coal mines worldwide. The model developed is capable of adequately predicting the operational performance of the real world system from a statistical point of view. The results from the study show that computer simulation is an excellent tool for evaluating various mine configurations and for gaining a better understanding of the mining systems.

Regional geological mapping and facies analysis of the Late Devonian to Early Carboniferous Keelbottom Group of the Burdekin Basin have resulted in a depositional model representing six siliciclastic-carbonate facies. The six facies represent alluvial fan, braidplain delta, siliciclastic shoreline, siliciclastic shallow marine, restricted siliciclastic/carbonate shelf, and carbonate shoal depositional environments. These facies are identified in the Star beds which are equated with and included in the Keelbottom Group in this paper. Facies are repeated throughout the Group, as a result of two transgressive-regressive cycles.The first transgression recognised in the Keelbottom Group began in the mid-Famennian, and followed deposition of the Late Devonian Dotswood Group. It was marked by the deposition of Siliciclastic Shoreline facies in the basal Myrtlevale Formation, which was succeeded by Siliciclastic Shallow Marine facies at the peak of the transgression. The return of Siliciclastic Shoreline facies in the upper part of the Myrtlevale Formation marked the onset of the first regression, which resulted in the progradation of Braidplain Delta facies from the northwest of the basin. During the peak of this regression, deposition in the western part of the basin was dominated by Alluvial Fan facies.

Synthesis of GLORIA side-scan sonar and other geophysical data has provided morpholo- gical and tectonic details of the interaction between the Nazca and South American plates along the Peru Trench (80S-15¦S). Our analyses suggest that a new propagating rift of the Galapagos type is evolving along the Mendana Fracture Zone (MFZ). Subduction induced rift- ing of the Nazca plate is accompanied by organized seafloor spreading for the last 3 Ma at least. GLORIA sonographs and bathymetric mapping show an 8-10¦ divergence in MFZ width towards the Peru Trench. The fracture zone comprises numerous ridges and troughs and a lack of sediment cover in the axial part. Young magnetic lineations (anomalies 1-2A) are observed within the fracture zone wni.cn are orthogonal to the older Nazca plate lineations. The central anomaly narrows west- ward and can be observed up to 400 km seaward of the trench whereas anomaly 2A is terminated about 200 km from the trench axis. Recent SeaMARC II sonar mapping in the region shows large igneous blocks in the Trench axis to the north of MFZ but absent to the south. We believe these blocks represent young seafloor of MFZ rift/spreading center broken off from the ridges as they subduct along the Peru Trench. The MFZ rift is propagating west- ward at a rate of 115 km/Ma (25 km/Ma relative to the South American plate). Given the present rates of accretion at the East Pacific Rise and of propagation along MFZ rift, the Nazca plate will be divided into two parts in about 35 Ma.

As part of a long-term acid rock drainage (ARD) mitigation study, PT Freeport Indonesia has completed the construction of a highly instrumented, full-scale, experimental, overburden stockpile to further evaluate the behaviour of the waste rock system at Grasberg mine. A total of 24 lysimeters, 30 sets of thermistor strings and 48 oxygen-sampling ports were installed at select locations during stockpile construction. ARD flow rates and chemistry have been recorded since the start of overburden rock placement in April 2000. Measurements of in situ temperatures and oxygen concentrations quantify reaction rates and the oxygen pathways that control oxidation kinetics deep within the waste rock profile. Direct field observations show the significance of advective oxygen flow with respect to the onset of oxidation kinetics. Oxygen measurements show that the rubble zone that forms at the base of a waste rock bench provides a critical pathway for oxygen entry to the waste rock profile. Furthermore, rapid oxidation as evidenced by measured temperature increases deep within the panels of waste rock is observed to occur. The observations presented in this paper provide critical insight for understanding the mechanisms and behaviour of full-scale waste rock stockpiles with respect to ARD generation. The results of this program will assist in the future selection, testing and evaluation of appropriate mitigation measures with respect to surface and face treatments to reduce long-term ARD generation. This project is a work in progress, and at least another two-years will be required to fully understand site-specific ARD generation and ARD mitigation mechanisms. This paper will discuss various design and construction considerations, provide an overview of results achieved to date, and some preliminary interpretation of what is happening within the overburden stockpiles.

Tower Mills are used at Aberfoyle's newly commissioned Hellyer base metal sulphide concentrator. Hellyer ore is particularly fine grained. To achieve adequate liberation fine grinding is necessary. Three Tower Mills are used on regrind duties, grinding to less than 20 microns. The physical arrangement, material flows and grinding characteristics for the Hellyer Tower Mills are described. The mills have performed satisfactorily, both in size reduction and power efficiency. Wear parts must be inspected and changed more often than with ball Mills. To date, 92 per cent availability has been achieved. As parts and maintenance routines are rationalised, this is expected to improve to 96 per cent. Modifications to wear parts for the Hellyer Tower Mills are discussed.lhc Tower Mill grinding environment is highly reducing. The impact of Tower Mill regrind on downstream flotation is discussed.

Advances in the development and application of in situ imaging of mineral processing operations using electrical tomography techniques are reviewed and illustrated with case studies relating to pneumatic conveying, mixing and centrifugal separation processes. The potential for applying these methods to full three-dimensional visualisation of the dynamic behaviour of flow in pipelines and separators, and the resulting consequences for process-modelling strategies, are discussed.

Gold dissolution by cyanide requires the presence of oxygen which is usually supplied by sparging compressed air into the gold containing slurry. For those ores that contain certain obnoxious substances that consume oxygen, maintaining the required minimum level of dissolved oxygen can be troublesome. One of the most economical solutions to the problem of low dissolved oxygen, especially in plants that have air compressors installed, is to enhance the rate of oxygen mass transfer. The oxygen mass transfer rate was measured in a two phase system using two different sparger arrangements, and with addition of a frother that is known to reduce the bubble size produced by the sparger. The common sparger system was shown to be inefficient compared with a readily available but under utilised method of gas dispersion which introduces air directly below the reactor turbine. Transfer of this technology to an operating plant confirmed the beneficial effect of the improved sparger system. The addition of the frother did decrease the bubble size, but it also reduced the oxygen mass transfer rate.

The middle-Devonian Dulladerry Volcanics is a complex of A-type, predominantly rhyolitic ignimbrites, lavas and breccias. They form a NNW trending belt some 90 km long and 10-20 km wide, east of Parkes, NSW. The volcanics are dominated by widespread ignimbrite units with minor basalts, sediments and rarer andesites. The volcanics were deposited in a sub-aerial, possibly continental rift setting and are similar in chemistry and age to the Eden - Comerong - Yalwal Volcanic Zone (EVZ) on the NSW south coast. The volcanics exhibit an unusual Atype chemistry (high Zr, Y, Nb, REE, Ga). This distinctive composition illustrates that the volcanics are not comagmatic with the adjacent Yeoval Granite Complex or Eugowra Granite, which show typical I-type fractionation trends. Epithermal gold veins occur in basalt and andesite in the Dulladerry Volcanics at Mt Aubrey (Hopf, 1992), near Baldry. Alteration also occurs in the Glen Isla and Red Hill areas, with epithermal sinter recognised at Glen Isla. Copper and minor gold mineralisation occurs at the contact of rhyolite and andesite at Reedy Creek, but is not of epithermal origin. The analogous EVZ also contains several epithermal gold fields and it is this style of mineralisation which provides the most prospective targets in the Dulladerry Volcanics. Although the Dulladerry Volcanics also contain high background levels of REE and metals such as Zn and Pb, the general lack of fractionation and water-undersaturated character of A-type magmas does not lend itself to the development of significant concentrations of these elements into a fluid phase and mineralisation. The prospectivity of A-type volcanics in general could not be regarded as high. Mining activity has been an integral component in the New Zealand economy since the early days of European settlement. Recently in common with other Pacific Rim countries there has been a resurgence of investment in gold. A sustained and increasing exploration effort has resulted in the rapid development of alluvial gold mining operations, a number of hard rock gold discoveries, and a general optimism about New Zealand's prospectivity. New Zealand's attitude to mining development, in particular hard rock gold mining is influenced by high environmental values and a concern, largely through absence of examples, that modern mining may not perform to community standards. While these environmental concerns are wide spread there is a growing realisation that gold mining, if properly managed, can take place within acceptable environmental standards and that it has the potential to contribute significantly to New Zealand's economy. New mining developments have an important role to play in this process. The mining industry in New Zealand is now at a crossroads. Having invested substantially and confirmed the potential for gold mining developments it has found itself in a rapidly changing economic environment as the Labour Government puts in place a number of fundamental economic reforms. The reforms are intended to free up the economy removing the rafts of subsidies and protective measures which have stultified initiative and growth. A fundamental reform of the public service has been initiated including corporatisation of trading activities and the establishment of a Department of Conservation to administer estensive areas of Crown land. Both petroleum and mining taxation are being reviewed with the intention of creating a more neutral competitive environment. Mining legislation is also being re-examined with both efficiency and equity objectives. While the current environment is characterised by uncertainty and rapid change, the outcome will be a more market-oriented stable policy environment, to the mutual benefit of the industry itself and the New Zealand Community.

The East West Link road tunnels are proposed to provide a connection between the CityLink toll road and the Eastern Freeway north of the Melbourne CBD. The alignment passes from Moonee Ponds valley beneath the Upfield Line railway cutting, Royal Park, the historic Melbourne Cemetery and beneath Alexander Parade rising to an eastern portal at Hoddle Street. The western (Royal Park) part of the alignment passes through the folded and faulted Silurian Melbourne Formation, which has been subjected to deep weathering since the Triassic.The Melbourne Formation in the Royal Park area is mainly characterised by interbedded sequences of siltstone and fine-grained sandstone. The beds are often graded and a clear boundary between the siltstone and fine-grained sandstone rock can be difficult to distinguish. Variation in lithology and the presence of structural geological features such as folds and faults have resulted in an irregular weathering profile within the Silurian rock; nonetheless the formation typically becomes less weathered with depth.Due to difficulties in obtaining reliable laboratory strength and stiffness relationships with weathering grade, in situ testing methods such as downhole shear wave velocity and high-quality pressuremeter testing are a useful aid to assessing appropriate geotechnical parameters for design.This paper presents an analysis of the variation in shear modulus of the Melbourne Formation, determined at small-strain (from downhole seismic data) and at ‘engineering scale’ strain (from pressuremeter tests) for extremely weathered (XW), highly weathered (HW) and moderately weathered (MW) rock. Estimates of small strain shear modulus (Go) obtained a range between 400 to 3400 MPa for these weathering grades. By comparison against the pressuremeter test data, reduction factors to be applied to these Go values to estimate shear moduli at engineering strain levels typically range between 0.10 and 0.35.The downhole geophysics undertaken in the Royal Park boreholes also suggests that there is an inversion in velocity between approximately 15 and 27?m depth below the top of the formation. This is thought to be related to the effects deep Plio-Pleistocene weathering, iron cementation of joints and increasing frequency of ‘non-healed’ joints in the transition from MW to slightly weathered (SW) rock.CITATION:Macklin, S, Schult, M, Terzic, Z and Chu, D, 2014. Bulk cargoes, including iron ore fines, must be shipped according to the rules agreed by the member states of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). One critical safety measure is the transportable moisture limit (T?ML) required for Group A cargoes (cargoes that may liquefy). A number of shipping incidents involving iron ore fines from India, where liquefaction of the cargo was suspected to be the cause, have brought the issue of iron ore fines T?ML into the spotlight. Extensive research has been undertaken by the major iron ore producers from Australia and Brazil to support the IMO in developing regulations for the shipment of iron ore fines. To this end, iron ore companies sponsored the AMIRA P1097 project to establish a modified T?ML test approach specific to iron ore fines. The project was undertaken by TUNRA Bulk Solids, CSIRO’s Centre for Bulk Solids and Particulate Technology and the University of Auckland, with project leadership provided by Creative Process Innovation. Geologists often classify ore textures on the basis of the origin of the rock in which they form and the grade of one or more minerals within the ore (Sinclair and Blackwell, 2002, pp 32-36).  Metallurgists, on the other hand, need to know how best to process the ore in order to extract the valuable minerals from it (Petruk, 2000). Geological classification has the following disadvantages:it requires the services of skilled economic geologists, of whom the supply has been dwindling for many years;it is subjective, depending on the perceptions of the individual geologists who make the classification; andit may relate only weakly to processing requirements of the ore. We describe methodology for automatic classification of ore textures from images of drill core. The images analysed are æclassifiedÆ images, in which a particular mineral (or mineral group) is assigned to each pixel. The new methodology is intended to:provide a quantitative and reproducible alternative to traditional geological texture classification,relate to process mineralogy of the ore, andimprove the ore-texture-related input to orebody domaining and geostatistical block models.
