The objective of this paper is to examine some modern forms of auxiliary ventilation fabric ducting with streamline design fittings and the efficiency of construction practices. The most dynamic form of auxiliary ventilation is a moveable fan and ducting, which is easy to install and uses light weight fabric. The porous nature of some ducting construction results in leakage and loss of efficiency. Flexible fabric ducting is primarily associated with metalliferous mining and industrial material quarrying. Some applications are found in coal in stone/rock development and with use of dust scrubbers.Forcing auxiliary ventilation systems employing circular fabric ducting have been examined. Leakage of air from ducting is affected by ducting material and construction methodology (such as welded or sewn), quality of installation, number of joints, total length, pressure differences between the inside and outside and diameter. The best ducting system with welded construction can have up to four times less leakage as compared with some systems with sewn construction. It is also evident that the sewn type ducting will deliver less air to working faces and require more fan power, hence higher operating costs to run when connected to the same fan.A case study has also been undertaken to compare predicted operating costs of auxiliary ventilation systems connecting various types of ventilation duct fittings. The study also assesses the technical importance of streamline design with low aerodynamic resistance to reduce the shock losses of the duct fittings. It was found that the system connected with streamline designed fittings is able to provide some power cost savings and deliver more air compared with the system fitted with conventional fitting pieces.Using a ventilation ducting system with a lower leakage and frictional characteristic represents a sound solution to new challenges faced by the industry for increasing demand for better quantities and quality of air delivered to working faces; this is due to higher production schedules and stricter mine health and safety regulations within the Australian mining industry.CITATION:Wu, H W and Gillies, A D S, 2017. Development of the Boleo Process Flow Sheet and the Direct Solvent Extraction (DSX) Circuit for Cobalt and Zinc Recovery The metallurgical process designed to treat the El Boleo Cu-Co-Zn-Mn ore involves a sulphuric acid leach in seawater under oxidative and then reductive conditions to maximise metal extraction. Copper and cobalt are recovered as cathodes by electrowinning, zinc and manganese as zinc sulphate monohydrate and high quality manganese carbonate, respectively, by precipitation after a number of separation and purification stages. One of the key purification stages of the Boleo metallurgical process is the CSIRO DSX circuit. The DSX circuit was developed using the synergistic solvent extraction (SSX) technology. Initially, a synthetic solution was studied, and by adding 0.4 M LIX63 to 0.5 M Versatic 10 in Shellsol D70, large synergistic shifts were obtained for cobalt (?pH50 4.24) and zinc (?pH50 1.62). After a single contact, the separation factor of metals over manganese reached over 6,000 for cobalt and over 380 for zinc, indicating excellent separation of cobalt and good separation of zinc from manganese, magnesium and calcium. The SSX system was further optimised with the modified synthetic pilot plant solution. The extraction of cobalt and Zn after a single contact was 93 per cent and 70 per cent, respectively, while the Mn concentration in the loaded organic solution was only 0.28 g/L. A proof of principle pilot plant operation was conducted in 2004 and a demonstration pilot plant for final engineering design in 2006 with outstanding performance of the DSX circuit. For the demonstration pilot plant, the overall recovery of cobalt and zinc exceeded 99 per cent with a raffinate containing only 4 mg/L Zn and 1 mg/L Co. The DSX organic system showed no sign of degradation during the pilot plant operation, indicating good chemical stability under the anticipated commercial operating conditions. The DSX circuit will be implemented in the future Boleo processing plant.

Gold was first discovered in the Shotover by Thomas Arthur in 1862. He left his job as a shearer and soon there were up to 3000 miners working over the length of the river. Some parts were extremely rich and a few early miners recovered as much as 300 ounces in a day. From these early days of hand working the operations progressed through to hydraulic elevating once water races and pipes were installed after the Skippers road was completed about 1890. The riverbed was worked in paddocks with .the gravel being sluiced to a central suction which elevated the material over a sluice box. Use of this system continued intermittently through until 1977 when Joe Schieb retired û the last of the hydraulic miners. Many bucket ladder dredges worked on the lower Shotover near Big Beach where the Sew Hoy family recovered a lot of gold. Just after 1900, at least three worked further upstream, one on the beach where Shotover Jet now operates and one further up below the Moonlight. All the sections for this were transported in over the Moonlight Track and the boiler, steam engine and bucket ladder are still sitting at the edge of the river. up near Maori Point a dredge operated from Dredge Slip upstream. Records are poor on these dredges but they all suffered from the frequent floods and large boulders which damaged the bucket line. The last dredging attempt was about 1930 when a suction dredge was constructed on Maori Beach. This failed as seems to be normal for most suction dredging ventures. The river can drop to very low levels in the middle of a dry summer, and in winter when the water is tied up in the mountains as ice and snow. During 1863 when heavy rain melted snow in the high country, the river rose 35 feet overnight and drowned many miners camped on the banks. The ever present risk of flooding dominates the method of working and plant design.

The Favona low-sulfidation epithermal deposit in the Hauraki Goldfield is less than one kilometre southeast of the world-class Waihi deposit. The veins are hosted by Miocene andesite of the Waipupu Formation, have a total strike length of over 900 m, a vertical extent of at least 350 m and are on average 1-3 m wide. Individual veins have been traced for 200 m with vein widths up to 25 m. The dominant vein textures are massive, crustiform and colloform banded veins and vein breccias, with subsidiary textures including comb, zonal, flamboyant, lattice-bladed, ghost-bladed, microbotryoidal, feathery, ripple and dune, and mosaic. Quartz is the dominant gangue mineral in the veins at Favona. Accessory gangue minerals include pyrite, chlorite, adularia, illite, calcite, and apatite. Electrum is the only gold-bearing mineral and is associated with acanthite, tetrahedrite, pyrite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, and rare galena. Whole rock geochemical analyses indicate that gold grades correlate with textures/vein types. The highest gold and silver grades are associated with vein breccias and banded veins, with the former containing 28 g/t Au and 136 g/t Ag on average. To date, veins with significant base metal sulfide minerals, and massive and crystalline quartz veins lack significant precious metals (Au and Ag), except for one banded base metal sulfide-rich vein at Favona. An overall zonation of the veins exists, with base metal sulfide minerals dominant at depth (1050 m RL) of the system are characterised by massive quartz veins.Fluid inclusions from a total of 31 quartz, amethyst, and platy calcite veins reveal homogenisation temperatures of ~190-250¦C, with final ice melting temperatures between 0.0 and -0.8. Ice melting temperatures correspond to apparent salinities of 18O value of the water that formed these veins is approximately -4.3 per mil, which is similar to meteoric water-dominated, near neutral chloride fluids in geothermal systems in the Taupo Volcanic Zone.

Systems such as Davey Bickford’s Daveytronic® SP blast initiation system and electronic detonators have been an integral part of drill and blast activities in Australia for over a decade, with the significant benefits of electronic blasting well documented. Since 2010 the Multiblast feature has been commercially available, which enables eight individual blast patterns (up to 1500 detonators each) to be blasted in the same firing window. Synchroblast has been in active operation since 2012, which allows a blast of up to 4500 detonators – either as a single blast pattern, or several smaller adjacent blast patterns – to be reliably initiated.Multiblast manages blasts separately but concurrently, allowing all blasts to conduct prefiring checks simultaneously from the firing point utilising only one remote blasting unit. Each blast can be selected and fired individually, in a sequence determined by the operator by scrolling through the colour display. Synchroblast automatically detects the blasting configuration, and manages all detonators as a single blast pattern. This simplifies the design and blasting processes for the mining operation.Multiblast and Synchroblast are routinely employed throughout Australia and globally in both open cut and underground operations, enabling optimal productivity due to increased blast volume and reduced operational downtime associated with blasting events.A number of case studies will be presented in this paper, detailing various mining operations that are consistently blasting in excess of 2500 detonators per blasting event as a part of standard drill and blast operations. The Golden Bar pit is part of the Macraes mine, the largest gold mine in New Zealand. The Macraes mine is mainly developed in the late metamorphic Hyde-Macraes Shear Zone. However, the Golden Bar pit was developed in a mineralised zone about 200 m structurally above the Hyde-Macraes Shear Zone. The host rocks are dominated by massive quartzofeldspathic schist (5 - 10 m layers) with minor intercalations (1 - 5 m scale) of micaceous schist. All the host schist has disseminated pyrite (micron to mm scale) from pervasive late metamorphic hydrothermal alteration.   In addition, there has been more localised (metre scale) relatively intense hydrothermal alteration controlled by shears subparallel to foliation. Gold occurs in three types of mineralised rock: silicified schist, which dominates, fissile black sheared rock, and cross-cutting quartz veins. There are three principal structural zones in the deposit: 1.   a strongly sheared micaceous and graphitic zone at the base of the structural sequence; 2.   a weakly deformed schist zone cut by relatively flat-lying (= 20¦ dipping) quartz veins; and 3.   a stack of imbricated schist pods and deformed silicified schist confined between two sub-parallel low-angle (ca. 30¦) shears.   These structural zones were juxtaposed during thrust deformation. The lower black shear zone has m-scale folding and over-thrusting packages, kink folding and foliation stacking with associated striations that imply west-directed thrusting. Striations and imbrication geometry between the upper two shears imply oblique thrusting that was directed towards the west. Post-mineralisation normal faults locally disrupt the mineralised zone. The Golden Bar pit mineralised zone has some of the structural and mineralogical characteristics of the main Hyde-Macraes Shear Zone, and may be genetically related.

Chatree Gold Mine is currently the only modern day gold mine operating in Thailand, and is situated approximately equidistant from Chiang Mai in the north and Bangkok in the south. Environmental guidelines set by the Thai authorities require Chatree Gold Mine to achieve a Total Cyanide level of 20 ppm or less in the process plant discharge slurry stream prior to release into the tailings storage facility. This paper describes both the initial difficulties faced in achieving compliance on this limit utilising the conventional INCO SO2/Air cyanide destruction system and the subsequent process improvements initiated to both the leaching process and the standard INCO process to achieve the current compliance levels of approximately 99/100 shifts. Improvements were focussed on the dual aspects of reducing the formation of WAD cyanide and ferrocyanide species in the leaching circuit coupled with process changes to improve removal of the ferrocyanide species from solution during the cyanide reduction stage.

Tonnage and grade are the principal reported components of mineral resource estimates but tonnage is a derivative of two more fundamental estimates; volume and bulk density. Typically, most of the effort in a resource estimation study is directed towards grade and volume, yet poor application of bulk density data to resource models can result in significant biases. The impact on tonnage estimates is easily recognised but poor density estimates may also introduce subtle biases into the grade estimates. Methods for measuring bulk density have been discussed previously. This paper focuses on the manipulation of bulk density data and the extension of bulk density from essentially point measurements to block estimates within resource models. Bulk density is a continuous, geologically controlled, spatial variable and should be treated as such. Issues such as combining data from multiple sources, sample support and the interdependence of bulk density and grade estimates must be resolved. The statistical and geostatistical techniques used for grade estimation are, under the right circumstances, equally applicable to bulk density. The importance of bulk density needs to be recognised. With robust raw data and correct estimation procedures, better estimates of bulk density can be obtained and both local and global tonnage and grade estimates can be improved.

It is now becoming mandatory in Australia to rehabilitate ponded fine grained coal mine tailings, which may well have been deposited initially with no consideration as to how or whether this could be done nor to the costsinvolved. Of prime importance to the rehabilitation of tailings ponds are the bearing capacity and deformation characteristics of the tailings. Since the tailings are fine grained, time effects will govern the self-weightdeformation of the tailings initially deposited as a slurry and the subsequent deformation of the deposit under the weight imposed by rehabilitation fill. The engineering properties of a particular deposit of ponded tailings havebeen investigated and its response to the placement of fill monitored and analysed.

The Mining Innovation – State of Play was initiated three years ago by VCI in partnership with the University of Western Australia. The ambition was to create a ‘think tank’ type platform to support industry discussion on how it is performing in terms of innovation at a strategic level, what needs to change in the industry ‘ecosystem’, and how businesses may more effectively develop their strategy and architecture to innovate for competitive advantage.The drivers for this ambition were straightforward. The industry recognises itself as being conservative with respect to innovation and it knows the business and community endowment dividend from getting better at innovation is large; however, much of the material that seeks to provide insight on innovation tends to be drawn from industries that do not have the same high capital, long life cycle and market uncertainty characteristics as that faced by mining. Material that does focus on mining innovation is orientated towards technical innovation, not innovation strategy. There exists a significant knowledge gap, and filling it is valuable to both mining businesses and communities.The 2014 Mining Innovation State of Play report (Stanway, Griebel and Mahoney, 2014), based on a survey of over 230 mining executives, uncovered a range of insights but left several questions unresolved. The people with the best perspective on these questions are CEOs. They can see the business issues with sufficient clarity and have the influence to shape both the industry and its organisations, as seen in Figure 1. Discussing these questions with the view to progressing our collective understanding was the primary reason this interview series was conducted.Unsurprisingly, interviewing 15 CEOs and Chairpersons from different industries and commodities, across the globe resulted in a broad range of views. The discussions were frank and often blunt in assessing the short comings in the industry and suggestions for improvement. This degree of candour is hugely valuable as a basis for improvement. Grinding and Flowing Investigation on Dry Stirred Ball Milling in Order to Determine the Influence of Grinding Aids Huge difficulties of the great ultra fine ground material production in dry stirred ball mill are the cohesion and agglomeration of the particles. During grinding the material stick on the grinding wall and the grinding media furthermore the grinds start cohere, making aggregation and agglomeration to appear. Due to these effects the particle size will not decrease after a certain value during grinding and the energy demand increases significantly. According to experience on fine grinding in ball mill, it is well known that these effects can be reduced with the use of grinding aids. The influence of grinding aids has three different effects: due to the adsorption strength reduction (Rebinder effect) the grinding resistance of the material decreases; the surface energy diminishes and the agglomeration liability decreases; and the flow properties of material improve. The aim of this study is to investigate the flow properties of fine grinds and the effect of grinding aids on flow properties in case of dry stirred ball milling. In addition, the influence of grinding aids was investigated based on the particle size distribution and specific surface area of grinds and the specific energy demand of grinding. The examinations were carried out with three different model materials (limestone, clinker, quartz) using the usually applied grinding aid. The flow properties were measured by the Jenike shear cell; the particle size distribution and specific surface area were measured by laser particle size analyser (Fritsch Analysette 22), grinding energy demand was measured with microcomputer controlled digital energy meter. It can be said that under certain measuring circumstances the influence of grinding aid on flow properties can be demonstrated by Jenike shear cell, so the grinding result is in correlation with the flow properties of grind.
