A SERIES of papers on strategic and otherwise important mineral products was prepared some ten years ago under the joint auspices of the Committee on Foreign and Domestic Mining Policy of the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America and the Committee on Industrial Preparedness of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical. Engineers. These papers were later published in a joint volume entitled International Control of Minerals (1925). Amongst them was one on manganese. The Subcommittee on Manganese prepared its paper in two forms. One was intended for inclusion with the series above referred to and approached its subject more particularly as an international problem. The other dealt more definitely with manganese as an element in the problem of national defense. This last was first written under date of January 24, 1924 as a confidential report, for and at the request of the War Department. It was later released and published, in slightly modified form, as a separate pamphlet by the Industrial Preparedness Committee of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. After the lapse of eight years, in view of the vital position of manga-nese in the problem of industrial preparedness against a war emergency, the War Department made a request to have the conclusions of 1924 reviewed and brought up to date. To comply with this request the manganese subcommittee was reconvened (with a somewhat changed personnel) and exhaustive studies were once more made of the entire subject of manganese. A new report, with specific recommendations, was submitted to the War Department in February, 1932. This second report is now herewith released for publication. Certain specific conclusions and recommendations as expressed to the War Department are omitted. Otherwise the report stands as prepared and submitted by the manganese subcommittee of 1931. IN a discussion in the Transactions of the Institute (vol. xl, page 835 et seq.) the writer gave some data about explosions of gas and dust in the coal mines of the United States, Canada, and Mexico, among which was a table showing all explosions in the countries mentioned, in which five or more fatalities occurred, which had been reported from Oct. 2, 1871, to Mar. 28, 1908. Since the elate of publication of this discussion, as opportunity has presented, this table has been extended by the addition of explosions occurring since that time, by including several explosions which occurred prior to 1871, and by adding to the list all explosions of gas or dust in which less than five fatalities occurred, this having been clone by a search through the various mine reports, partly by the author and partly by the Librarian of the United Engineering Societies, and by correspondence with mine inspection officials of the various States, to all of whom acknowledgment of assistance is made: The accompanying list, Table I, is believed to be as nearly correct as such a statement can be made, and, while only extending to Dec. 20, 1912, contains all of the data now available in reports. An analysis of Table I, showing the occurrence by months of all explosions of gas or dust, including those in which less as well as those in which more than five fatalities occurred, is given in Table II. The statements are frequently made, in technical papers, that the number of explosions, particularly the larger ones, is increasing more rapidly than the number of mines, and that the number of fatalities caused by mine explosions, particularly the more disastrous ones, is increasing faster, proportionally, than the production of coal. To investigate the correctness of these statements Table III was prepared, in which the number of accidents and fatalities is taken from Table I, using those in the United States only, on account of lack of other data for Canada and Mexico; the production is from the records of the U.S. Geological Survey, and the number of mines, from 1909, from the same source; previous to 1909, the number of mines, for the decennial periods, was furnished by the U. S. Census records.

WET-PROCESS coal-washing tables as we know them today have been in use in this country for approximately 25 years. The literature records only a few table installations worthy of note prior to adoption of the present-day differential-motion table. According to Phillip,1 six Campbell bumping tables were being operated by the St. Bernard Coal Co., Earlington, Ky., in 1893. As late as 1923, according to Richardson, 2 such tables were in operation in the Rosedale washery of the Cambria Steel Co., at Johnstown, Pa. Bumping tables probably were not used to any considerable extent except in the plant at Earlington, and at two or three plants in Pennsylvania, but they may be considered as. forerunners of the present-day coal-washing table. The transition from bumping tables to the type of tables now in use signalized a revolutionary change in table design. The advantages of the new design over the old were so outstanding as to make its adoption inevitable. BUMPING TABLES Bumping tables, as the name implies, utilized a bumping action for conveying the refuse and discharging it over the refuse end. The tables were hung from rods attached to overhead supporting beams. A shaft and cam arrangement at one end of the table served as the actuating mechanism and imparted to the table an endwise, back-and-forth, swinging motion. A bumping block was fixed in the proper position at the shaft end, so that the table would strike against it at the end of each backward swing. The hanger rods or stirrups were so adjusted as to give the table a slight uphill slope toward the refuse end; that is, the end next to the driving mechanism. The feed box was near the upper end of the table and designed to spread the mixture of coal and water over the width of the table. Wash water was added a short distance below the feed box. With the table in motion and coal mixed kith water being fed to it through the feed box, a certain amount of stratification took place, depositing heavy refuse at the bottom of the bed in contact with the surface of the table. An endeavor has been made to present a complete and accurate statement of the San Mauricio mine, the highest grade gold mine in the Philippine Islands. INTRODUCTION The purpose of this paper is to summarise development of design processes used in the 1100 oreoody as a result of experience encountered. Design methods have been developed as a result of the history of ground behaviour, free-standing qualities of cemented back fill and mass blasting techniques. This paper contains an historical review of design methods previously described by Matthews ( 1972 ) , Hornsby and Sullivan (1977 and 19781, Kirkby, Blair and Hutton (19781, and Stewart (1980). The reasoning behind design philosphy changes are discussed and placed into context with methods now adopted. The 1100 orebody is Mount Isa's main producer of copper ore (5 million tonnes per year ) . Proven reserves are 120 million tonnes at 3.2% Cu. Location of the 1100 orebody in relation to overall mine geometry was well described by Dayton (1976). Geology The orebody is located in a series of massive brecciated shale lenses, in either a siliceous or dolomitic matrix, surrounded and separated by a uniform shale sequence. The whole formation is truncated at depth by a faulted contact with a greenschist facies metamorphic sequence below (Figure 1 and Figure 2) Mathias and Clark (1976). The breccia is known locally as silica dolomite and contains nearly all the economic mineralisation. Interfingering of shale and breccia often results in irregular boundaries to the silica dolomite and the ore limits. Geometry The geometry of the orebodies is shown by Figures 1, 2 and 3. Figure 3 also shows the location of the copper orebodies in relation to the lead orebodies. Structure Although the orebody is contained within the massive breccia (u.c.s. 150-250 MPa), it is cut by shear zones sub-parallel to the regional bedding (north-south striking, dipping approximately 60o to the west), and diagonally by major transverse faults (Figure A). These major faults have continuity in excess of 300 metres, with varying amounts of displacement up to 200 metres, and are zones of potential movement.

ADEQUATE treatment of the difficulties surrounding the valuation of mineral lands requires that agreement be first reached defining value as understood for the purpose of appraisal. To define value as the price of a product is not sufficient, and does not assist us in using the factors that cause variations in values and in relative values. The real value of any product depends primarily upon its relation to the necessities, comforts and pleasures of mankind. As the necessities, comforts and pleasures of the civilized races differ-from those of more primitive man, the value of products varies with the degree of civilization and the environment of the consumer. Coal has no value to the savages of warm climates, and arrow-head flint none to the residents of New York. It has long been recognized that what has. been termed ?intrinsic value " must be limited to materials that are essential to existence-air, water, food. But " intrinsic value " cannot be measured in monetary terms. The intrinsic value of a bushel of wheat is due to the fact that it will support the life of an individual for a certain definite time, but this fact does not enable us to measure or to express that value in monetary terms. It has often been proposed to adopt as a measure of the value of any product the quantity of labor necessary to produce it, but this method is of limited application, and will not apply to what may be termed " intrinsic values." For many reasons it might be well, while assenting to the fact that any material may be intrinsically valuable, to abandon the use of the term "intrinsic value." One of these reasons is the tendency to confuse the idea of " intrinsic value with a value that is conferred by economic conditions, that is purely artificial and that may be permanent or evanescent. Intrinsic value must from its nature be permanent and unchangeable.

The kinetics of formation of intermediate sili-cide compounds from MoSi2/Mo and WSi2/W couples were studied using a cylindrical sample configuration. Concentration profiles of the constituent metals were deter mined from electron-microprobe analysis of cross-sectioned samples after isotlzernzal diffusion annealing. These data also yielded hand widths of phases. Growth of intermediate phases depends on diffusionin them and obeys a parabolic rate law. The rates of formation of the intermediate phases decrease in the order Mo5Si3 > W5Si3 > Mo3Si. Crowth rates. for the isomorphous phases Mo5Si3 and W5Si3 had the same activation energy. 43 kcal per mole. SILICIDE coatings employed to protect refractory metals from high-temperature oxidation are usually formed by a diffusion process requiring concurrent transfer of silicon to the refractory metal surface. For a simple binary system and a coating thickness of one or two mils, the coatings on molybdenum and tungsten are primarily the disilicides WSi2 and MoSi2, respectively. During use of the coated re- fractory-metal system at high temperatures, in the absence of the silicon source, further diffusion causes growth of lower silicide compounds and depletion of the disilicides. Recent investigations have shown that the lower silicides are less effective than the disilicides in forming a glassy oxide film which impedes oxidation.' Consequently, failure of coatings at high temperatures may coincide with complete conversion of the disilicide phase. The purpose of this part of the study is to investigate the growth kinetics of the intermediate compounds in the W-Si and Mo-Si systems. INTRODUCTION Summary of Factors Influencing Comminution Circuit Design The selection of an appropriate comminution circuit for a specific ore is one of the most important decisions in the design of a processing plant. The importance is related to the fact that the capital and operating costs for crushing and grinding plant generally represent, as is well known, the major portion of the plant costs. This chapter will, therefore, identify as many as possible of the factors which influence the selection of a comminution circuit. The number of factors which will have to be considered for any comminution project will depend, among other things, on the type of project. If, for example, the project is an entirely new mining development, then most, if not all, the factors identified will have to be analyzed. If the project is an expansion of a developed mining operation or if the new orebody is adjacent to a viable operation, then the existing operation will influence the choice of factors or design constraints which need to be considered. The existing infrastructure or supporting systems may be quite adequate to accommodate the requirements of any expansion or new development. Hence, those factors may not have to be considered. To cover, however, the widest spectrum of projects, the factors which have been identified in this chapter are those which will have to be considered for the most complex of projects, that of developing an entirely new mining operation. The range of factors is as broad as the range of different ore types. Thus, each development must be treated with individualized care. The most important step in the development is the analysis and understanding of the ore characteristics. The hardness of the ore, its abrasiveness, friability, moisture content, grade, mineralization including gangue mineralization, liberation size, chemistry, and other characteristics should be the first to be analyzed in the investigation. The next should be the determination of factors such as plant size, throughput, location, climate, accessibility, and availability of water. Among the iron-bearing ores of the world, the titaniferous iron sands of New Zealand are probably the least known to American engineers. This is not surprising in view of the fact that American ironmasters look with disfavor on any, even domestic, ores containing over 1 per cent. titanium. The possibilities of smelting titanium-bearing ores in the blast furnace are still undetermined, but the problem of their efficient reduction is becoming more important each year. There seems to be little inclination on the part of American furnace operators to tackle this problem, and they will no doubt continue to utilize the non-titanium ores at their command, leaving research and experiment to those countries not so fortunately endowed. New Zealand has, however, been intensely interested in her deposits of titanium-bearing iron sand, and during the last 50 years considerable English and New Zealand capital has been expended on this problem. The extent of the New Zealand iron-sand deposits is almost beyond measure. From Patea north to Manuka Heads, along almost the entire west coast of the North Island, these deposits exist. Wherever there is beach sand along this 300 mi. of coast line, the sand is iron bearing. It varies considerably in grade; but wherever the contour of the coast affords small bays and inlets, large dunes are found that are remarkably uniform in quality. Several of these large deposits, especially those at New Plymouth and Patea, are noted for their high iron content. The dune at New Plymouth runs between 55 and 60 per cent. of metallic iron; the panning action of the prevailing westerly winds and northwesterly currents has no doubt resulted in this concentration. Whatever the origin of this material may be, there is no doubt that deposition is going on continuously. At New Plymouth, a small artificial harbor, protected from the drifting sand by a large breakwall, has been dredged. Here sailing vessels have for years been loaded with iron sand for ballast by means of a crane and grab bucket operated from the wall of the breakwater. Thousands of tons of sand have been removed from this spot yet each succeeding storm renews the supply. The sand dune shown in Fig. 1 has been tested to a depth of 50 ft. (15 m.) without losing its

INTRODUCTION The two prior Seeley W. Mudd books on mineral economics devoted their final chapters to themes having to do with the future. In 1932, the last chapter in Mineral Economics8 was "The Future Value of Mineral Property" by J. R. Finlay. Both the first edition (1959) of Economics of the Mineral Industries7 and the slightly revised second edition (1964) closed with "Minerals and Man's Future" by Zay Jeffries. We are not inclined in this third AIME volume on mineral economics to ignore the tradition of the prior volumes. Moreover, it always is fitting and proper to close a book about the mineral industries by examining in a rather general way the challenges and uncertainties that are perpetually strewn in our path as we pick our way into the future. Unlike its predecessor volumes, which were written to acquaint the nonspecialist with the economic characteristics of mineral resources and to provide data about the mineral industries, this edition was also designed with the mineral economics student and practicing specialist in mind. Thus it is anticipated that it will be both a reference as well as suitable for use as a textbook. Consequently, this closing examination of our changing perspectives about mineral resources devotes some space to the past events and current status of mineral economics as a field of study. The fears and forecasts of the past can be a perceptive and usually deflating way to begin an examination of the future. As we look up and down the track of time from the 1975 platform, we find that many of the past views of the future were transient in character, others were imperfect in their prognosis, while others were based on fears that now seemed unfounded. But down through the years some of the observations or expressions of concern have a persistency which perhaps reflects some elemental characteristics of mineral resources. On these "truths" rest our contemporary understanding of the economics of the mineral industries. The uncertainties and priorities for the next 25 or more years, not surprisingly, have a somewhat different mix than those that seemed most compelling to our predecessors in 1932 or 1959. So it is appropriate that we review how the perspective of the mineral economist has changed over the span of a half century. In light of the particular interest of AIME on the role technology must play, it is fitting that we close with some observations on that topic. IT was said by many who discussed Professor Posepny's admirable paper on the " Genesis of Ore-Deposits," read at the Chicago meeting of the Institute, in 1893, that its most valuable feature was the clear distinction which it drew between the influence upon ore-deposits of the "vadose " circulation of waters descending directly from the surface, and that of the deep underground circulation of waters generally coming from the depths, and assumed by the author to be ascending through more or less open spaces under the influence of heat. A little later the effect of the oxidizing action of the vadose circulation upon ore-deposits was ably and exhaustively treated by Prof. R. A. F. Penrose, in a paper on " The Superficial Alteration of Ore-Deposits "f-the only one, so far as I know, which has been exclusively devoted to this important subject. My own first detailed study of ore-deposits was made at Leadville, in 1880, at a time when almost the only minerals visible in those deposits were in oxidized forms. That this form was the result of the alteration of earlier sulphides by surface-waters had to be proved at the time by induction or analogy, the general correctness of which was, however, abundantly confirmed by subsequent developments. Thus I was early impressed with the importance of distinguishing, in the study of an ore-deposit, the alteration-products, resulting from the action of oxidizing waters descending from the present surface, from the earlier-formed sulphides; and, assuming that the latter were primary or original, I called the former secondary. Soft solders are used principally in the automotive, can-making, building construction and electrical industries, but their field of usefulness extends well beyond these principal users to a vast list of miscellaneous applications where metal joints are required. The most common soft solders and the only ones considered in this discussion are those composed of lead and tin, with or without various relatively small percentages of impurities or additions. A small amount of antimony is often purposely added. As an indication of the importance of these lead-tin solders, 8620 long tons of tin were consumed in 1934 in the United States for making new solder, and during most of 1935 from 900 to 1000 long tons often were used each month. In addition, many thousands of tons of secondary solder are recirculated annually. A great many factors influence the properties of joints made with soft solders. Fluxes and the fluxing procedure used to prepare the surfaces to be joined in order to give a true metal-to-metal contact are among the most important of these factors. The temperatures used, cleanliness of the work and general soldering technique have their effect, but when results are unsatisfactory they are usually attributed to the metallic solder itself and the raw materials from which it is made. Sometimes criticism of the solder is justified. The wrong composition may be chosen for a given job, impurities may be present that ruin certain desired qualities, or uniformity may be lacking. A solder may even be looked upon with suspicion because of its ancestry, regardless of its true composition and behavior. To clarify the effect of slight differences in composition as found in commercially refined solders, a comparison of properties of solders grouped according to their origin has been undertaken. This investigation seeks to give practical information on the properties of tin-lead solders produced from virgin metals, from commercially refined secondary solder, and from an electrolytically refined crude

Since production curtailment for other than engineering reasons is gradually disappearing, and more and more wells are now producing at capacity and showing declining production rates, it was considered timely to present a brief review of the development of decline-curve analysis during the past three or four decades. Several of the commoner types of decline curves were discussed in detail and the mathematical relationships between production rate, time, cumulative production and decline percentage for each case were studied. The well-known loss-ratio method was found to be an extremely valuable tool for statistical analysis and extrapolation of various types of curves. A tentative classification of decline curves, based on their loss ratios, was suggested. Some new graphical methods were introduced to facilitate estimation of the future life and the future production of producing properties where curves are plotted on semilogarithmic paper. To facilitate graphical extrapolation of hyperbolic-type decline curves, a series of decline charts was proposed, which will make straight-line extrapolation of both rate-time and rate-cumulative curves possible. Introduction During the period of severe production curtailment, which is now behind us, production-decline curves lost most of their usefulness and popularity in prorated areas because the production rates of all wells, except those in the stripper class, were constant or almost constant. While production-decline curves were thus losing in importance for estimating reserves, an increasing reservoir consciousness and a better understanding of reservoir performance developed among petroleum engineers. This fact, together with intelligent interpretation and use of electric logs, core-analysis data, bottom-hole pressure behavior and physical characteristics of reservoir fluids, eliminated a considerable part of the guesswork in previous volumetric methods and put reserve estimates, based on this method, on a sound scientific basis' At the same time, a number of ingenious substitutes were developed for the regular production-decline curve, which made it possible to obtain an independent check on volumetric estimates in appraisal work, even though the production rates were constant. with the now steadily increasing demand for oil to supply the huge requirements of this global war, proration for reasons of than prevention of underground waste is gradually disappearing. More and more wells are, or will be, producing at capacity or at their optimum rates, as determined by sound engineering practice. With this trend, the character of producing wells seems to regain, more or less, its "individuality," and the old and familiar decline curve appears to have had a comeback as a valuable tool in the hands of the petroleum engineer. It may be timely, therefore, to retrace the development of decline-curve analysis in the past by presenting a brief chronological review of bulletins and papers published during the past three or four decades, which have

Because of the two distinct stages in the solidification of rimmed steel, segregation in the rimmed ingot is more complex than that in the killed or semikilled ingot. In the earlier stage, chemical reactions, resulting in evolution of gas and vigorous stirring of the metal, effect a degree of negative segregation unique to rimmed steel. The composition of this zone constitutes the principal quality advantage of this type of steel. In the later stage of solidification, after the evolution of gas has ceased, the segregation follows the general pattern of a more completely deoxidized steel. However, the composition of the liquid remaining after the first solidification stage varies markedly from that of the original melt, some constituents having been partially removed as reaction products while the concentration of others has been intensified by rejection from the metal solidifying in the first zone. The aim, from the standpoint of segregation, in rimmed steel of high quality is to effect a maximum negative segregation in the rim zone without excessive concentration of undesirable elements at the center of the ingot. To achieve this aim, the composition of the melt may be varied and the furnace and pouring practice may be adjusted within certain limits. It is the purpose of this study to discuss segregation in rimmed steel from the standpoint of the mechanisms that produce it and to survey the phases of open-hearth practice that influence those mechanisms. Mechanisms Producing Segregation The mechanisms that determine the degree of segregation in the rimmed ingot are closely interrelated, making it difficult to select the primary factors and to determine a satisfactory order for presenting them. For instance, the question of sulphur segregation is relatively simple, since sulphur is not directly involved in chemical reactions in the ingot; but its concentration in the rim zone is dependent not only on its original analysis in the melt, its segregation coefficient, and the freezing rate, but also on the rate of its removal from the impure film on the solidifying surface. This washing action involves all the factors (such as freezing rate, the carbon-oxygen product, pressure, etc.) that determine the rate of gas evolution and hence the efficiency of film removal. Sulphur distribution between the rim and core is affected by the volumetric ratio between the two zones, and its segregation in the core is a function not only of the freezing rate of the core but also of all the foregoing factors that determine its concentration in the metal when solidification of the core starts. DATA pertaining to pipe line flow for both oil and gas in horizontal or nearly horizontal pipe lines are both extensive and accurate. However, the pipe formulas used to determine pressure drop for flowing fluids (liquids and gases) under conditions of horizontal flow are not generally applicable to flowing oil and/or gas wells. Except for some data developed in small laboratory set-ups, little or no information was available concerning flow of oil and gas mixtures in vertical pipes, when, in 1928, the writer began the development of a method for computing pressure drops in the pipes of flowing oil wells, as outlined in this paper. In 1929, Uren1 presented some findings based on laboratory experi-ments in which vertical flow of an extremely heavy crude oil was induced, by means of air through a 2-in. pipe, 41 ft. long. The friction factors derived from the experiment, as well as values for pressure drop per 100 ft., are not believed satisfactory in their application to flow problems in the field. Versluys,2 also in 1929, presented a mathematical development of the theory of flowing oil wells, and in 1930, gave a companion paper3 setting forth some principles governing the choice of length and diameter of tubing in oil wells. Since the termination of the study presented in this paper, another. valuable contribution pertaining to the problem, of vertical flow was made by Moore and Wilde.4 Although there were writings dealing with the principles of the gas-lift, a search of the available literature indicated that specific information on vertical flow was lacking with the exception of the writings of Uren, Versluys, and Moore and Wilde, to which reference .has been made.

WHEN the senior author of this paper presented an article on Fine Coal Cleaning by the Hydrotator Process,1 at the February, 1927, meeting, that process had been developed in the anthracite region only to clean what is known as "slush" or "silt." This size constitutes all of the material passing the finest screen used at any particular colliery. Some use a 3/32 -in. round-hole screen and others use a 1/16 -in. round hole. Practice varies throughout the anthracite region, but the tendency seems to be toward the finer screen.

THE scope of this paper will be limited to finished materials that contain a large preponderance (around 80 per cent or more) of magnesium oxide. The large and commercially important production of refractory dolomite and modified dolomites is not discussed here, and the production of magnesium basic carbonate for use as a heat insulator is barely mentioned. The discussion is confined mainly to magnesias produced in comparatively great quantity by direct processing of naturally occurring raw materials and hence excludes secondary or highly purified products such as pharmaceutical products or U.S.P. light and heavy calcined magnesias of commerce. NOMENCLATURE The nomenclature of the magnesia products that will be discussed is somewhat confusing, in that it is customary in the trade to designate as "calcined magnesite" the materials that result from the calcining of magnesite to temperatures that remove the contained carbon dioxide. The finished product, therefore, is not magnesite at all but simply a more or less pure magnesium oxide or magnesia. Furthermore, partly for statistical and partly for commercial reasons, it has been customary, during recent years, to classify as "calcined magnesite" products that result from the heat-treatment of magnesium hydroxide precipitated from magnesium-containing brines; products that, obviously, have no relationship whatever to magnesite. In the listing of magnesia-containing materials, tonnages of which are regularly reported by the Bureau of Mines, reports ordinarily are made under two headings: "caustic calcined" magnesite, in which all of the varieties of products treated at relatively low temperatures are lumped; and "dead-burned" magnesite, in which are included both high-purity and low-purity, and particularly both high-iron and low-iron, materials that have been so heat-treated that the magnesium oxide occurs predominantly as crystalline periclase-materials used almost entirely for refractory purposes. In 1940 the apparent domestic consumption of "caustic calcined" magnesite was approximately 17,000 tons, about 95 per cent of which was produced in this country. The apparent consumption of "dead-burned" magnesite was approximately 172,000 tons, some 82 per cent of which was domestically produced. In both total quantity and percentage of material produced within the United States, these figures are record highs for many years past. UTILIZATION As indicated by these figures, the major tonnage outlet for magnesia is the refractories industry, in which magnesia is employed principally in three ways: (I) as dead-burned grain magnesite for the construction and maintenance of the hearths or bottoms of basic open-hearth furnaces; (2) in the form of refractory magnesite bricks and shapes; and (3) as a chemical

The objective of this chapter is to discuss the interrelationship between industrial minerals and chemical manufacturing. It is intended to supplement rather than duplicate the commodity chapters. Particular emphasis is given to the pertinent chemical element and to market factors. Condensing this broad subject into a few pages of this handbook permits treating only the most important elements derived from industrial minerals. Hydrocarbons, which quantitatively dominate as raw materials for the chemical industry, are omitted, as are the metallic elements and the minerals covered in other "use" chapters such as phosphorous, potassium and nitrogen for fertilizers, and titanium dioxide for pigments. The remaining six elements of major importance are: boron, bromine, chlorine, fluorine, sodium, and sulfur. These elements are treated individually under separate headings. Table I (Jones, 1973) affords an overview of the main industrial minerals, the chemical products derived from them, and end uses of the products. Salt brines have particular importance as raw material sources for the chemical industry. Table 2 (Anon., 1967) is a chart of the chemical compounds derived from four types of brines: (1) Owens Lake-type brines, which are sources of boron and sodium compounds; (2) Midland-type brines, from which bromine, iodine, and chlorides of calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium are derived; (3) Searles Lake-type brines, yielding boron, bromine, lithium, magnesium, potassium, and sodium compounds; and (4) Silver Peak-type brines, produced mainly for lithium. Market Attributes Some of the important market traits common to industrial minerals used by the chemical industry are listed below. 1. They are international commodities, such as fluorspar and sulfur, which largely move to foreign consumers. 2. Grade, and freedom from deleterious elements are important factors affecting their usability in chemical processes. An example is salt (NaCl) used in electrolysis where ultrapure evaporated salt is required to meet rigid specifications. 3. Purified products take on the characteristics of specialty items and command a distinctly higher price than the basic commodity from which they are derived. 4. In practically all cases, chemical users require some sort of cleaning or beneficiation of the naturally-occurring mineral to bring it to specification, and individual specifications may vary from user to user for essentially the same use. 5. In some instances it is necessary to strike a balance between what the vendor can supply and what the buyer requires, with the result that specifications have to be eased to afford the needed materials in marginal cases. 6. Because they tend to be bulk commodities, low cost for handling and transportation are important and such costs may limit the area from which a chemical user can draw his supply. For example, fluorspar from China and Thailand normally goes to Japan, while South African fluorspar can go either to Japan or to the US. 7. Shipments are usually in bulk and frequently in multiple-car, full-trainload or full-shipload lots to reduce transport costs, which in turn may require large terminal investment facilities.

THE Cr,O-type, or P-tungsten, structure having the space group (Oh2— Pm,n) is one of the most widely occurring structures found among the intermediate phases involving transition metals. Including the phases reported here for the first time, the total number of these A,B phases now known is 39. Greenfield and Beck' have correlated the lattice parameters of these phases with the Goldschmidt radius of the close-packed chains of A atoms. Laves' discussed the apparent size of the A and B atoms in this structure. Gel1er" proposed a scheme for reproducing the lattice constants of the phases by the use of a list of effective C.N. 12 radii for the component elements. Reported here is a survey of the A,B combinations which appeared favorable for the stability of the Cr,O-type phase but which, at the time the investigation was begun, either had not been reported upon or had conflicting reports as to the existence of the structure. Seventy systems were investigated, and 8 Cr,,O-type structures were found. Six of these also were reported by other investigators in the interval between the start of this investigation and its completion. This survey yielded information as to the influence of the relative sizes of the A and B atoms on the stability of the phase and, for the various families of Cr,O-type phases, the effects of the sizes of the A and B atoms on the lattice constant. Likewise, a somewhat clearer picture of the connection between the position of the A and B elements in the Periodic Table and their Cr,O-type phase-forming tendencies has become apparent.
