LUMINESCENT materials have been used in an increasing variety of ways in recent years. Such uses range from the screens on which the picture or image is presented in television and other cathode ray tubes to fluorescent lamps, fluorescent effects in decorative, theatrical, and display lighting, and the many applications of phosphorescence in paints, textiles, paper, and plastics. During the war the screens for a radar set or the "night-seeing" devices were not fundamentally different from those in other cathode ray tubes, but nevertheless they presented special problems for the phosphor manufacturer. It was essential that the "pips" on a radar screen continue to glow after the exciting beam had swept on, but this afterglow would be ruinous to a television screen. In the image tube used for seeing at night with infrared instead of visible light, electrons emitted by an infrared-sensitive receiving surface were amplified and converted to visible light after striking a fluorescent screen. The small size of the screen caused special problems in reducing the grain size of the phosphor to obtain adequate resolution. Other devices used phosphor surfaces which could be stimulated directly by infrared radiation to emit visible light. Energy was stored in the phosphors by prior excitation with short-wave-length radiation, and the stored energy released on subsequent exposure to infrared radiation. Maps, navigational charts, bombing manuals, and computers of various sorts were printed on fluorescent paper or lettered with fluorescent inks. Fluorescent markings excited by small ultraviolet lamps were used on airplane instrument dials. A large amount of research was done to determine the best color for the emitted light and other properties for the fluorescent materials, and on the best methods for their fabrication into the items listed above. Phosphorescent materials found wide use during blackout restrictions to mark safe passageways, to delineate traffic hazards, to identify packages, and to mark tools and other items of equipment.

The literature of geophysics as applied to the discovery of mineral deposits has been very extensive during the past few years,' but there seem to be few references to the use of the method of least squares for obtaining better interpretations of the observed data.2 There seems to be a general reluctance among geologists and engineers to acquire the technique of least squares, in spite of the fact that a thorough knowledge of the theory is not necessary for the use of the method.

Following the introduction of shields to the U.S. longwall mining scene and the steady increase in the number of shield faces during recent years, the occurrence of longwall -ground-control -associated accidents has shown a welcome downward trend. But even though the accident experience is favorable, problems exist. New mining systems, however efficient, have run afoul of roof control. Shield faces have suffered extended stoppages because of roof cavities. Therefore, the Bureau of Mines has reviewed foreign remedial techniques to evaluate their potential for domestic application. Such technology includes cribbing, strain absorbent modules (SAM'S), inflatables, wire meshing, chemical rock stabilization, synthetic foams, and monolithic fills.

The introduction of Vertical Crater Retreat (VCR) Stoping at the Homestake Mine in Lead, SD, constitutes a major advance in Homestake Mining Company's efforts to improve productivity and reduce costs through under- ground mine mechanization. The work to date indicates that Vertical Crater Retreat Stoping is one of the safest methods of underground hardrock mining today, and is competitive with all other forms of stoping in terms of cost and productivity. Homestake anticipates that VCR stoping will account for approximately 35% of the total mine production in 1981.

DURING the winter of 1877-78 the Glendon Iron Company, by the advice of the superintendent, Mr. Frank Firmstone, decided to make the experiment of exploding a heavy blast of gunpowder in their limestone quarry at Cedar Hill, Palmer Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. The amount of limestone used in the five furnaces of the company is about 60,000 tons per annum, and it was thought that with successful results; this entire amount or more would be thrown down at a single operation, disintegrating the mass to a greater or less extent, and obviating the necessity of blasting and boring the rock from the face of the cliff, both of which operations are slow, and therefore, costly. The rock at the quarry is Auroral limestone, or No. 2 of the old Survey. No fossils have ever been found in the quarry, nor in the immediate vicinity. The nature of the rock varies considerably in

When Ponce de León landed in Florida in 1573 he was told of an Indian chief that possessed much gold. In 1576 Diego Meruelo obtained some of it from the Indians, and in 1579 Álvarez de Pineda reported that the natives wore ornaments of gold, which they obtained from the rivers. These statements all refer to the southern Appalachian region. The name is recorded in 1527; when Pamphilo Narváez landed at Tampa he heard that there was much gold to be obtained in a region named Apalache. * In 1564 René Laudonnière describes the methods used by the natives to win gold in the Apalatcy mountains.† However, no serious mining operations were undertaken until long afterward; the mining of gold in the Southern States may be said to have had its beginning when a nugget was found at the Reed mine, in North Carolina, in 1799. This nugget, which was of "the size of a small smoothing iron", was kept for several years before the finder learned what it was, but later more lumps, one weighing 28 pounds, were found in the same locality, and eager digging ensued. ‡ Thomas Jefferson, in his `Notes on Virginia', mentions the finding of a quartz specimen, not a nugget as is generally stated, that contained 17 pennyweights of gold; this was found on the Rappahannock river in 1782. §

INTRODUCTION Coal is a solid, combustible mineral substance resulting from the degradation and alteration of vegetable matter largely in the absence of air. In this natural process of coalification, some non-combustible mineral matter is always associated with the combustible material. Coal preparation or cleaning is the process of removing this inert mineral matter from the coal. Preparation is highly successful in removing the large fragments of inert material, but is not very effective in removing the fine inorganic mineral matter intimately associated with the coal. Of the 600 million tons of coal produced in the United States every year, approximately one-half is produced by coal cleaning methods (1). The bulk of this tonnage is cleaned by coarse or intermediate gravity preparation methods (5 inches to 28 mesh, Tyler). Fine cleaning, say, -28 mesh, is done by shaking tables, washing cyclones, and flotation, or, until recently, the fines were either incorporated into the clean coal or simply discarded--not infrequently, the latter. In 1972, only 13 million tons of raw coal were cleaned by flotation in the United States, and from this 8.4 million tons of clean coal were produced (1). The percentage of clean coal produced by flotation in Europe (England, West Germany, Poland, U.S.S.R., etc.) is substantially higher. However, coal flotation has grown rapidly in the United States from only a few plants in 1950 to 31 in 1960 (2) and 66 in 1970 (1). Virtually all new preparation plants incorporate flotation into their basic flowsheet. Geological Survey published the data on the Central Mining District collected by Lindgren and Gratonl and by Paige2 much new information has been obtained by development and mapping, but none of it had been published until recently when Kniffin3 published on Fierro, Lasky4 on the Ground Hog mine, Thorne5 on Santa Rita and Landon6 filed a thesis on the Fierro-Hanover-Santa Rita area at the University of Chicago. During the years 1927-1930 much of the writer's time was spent in mapping the geology and ore deposits of this district, particularly in the area of the zinc deposits at Hanover. Some of the data collected are presented here. Previous publications have been freely drawn upon and additional data used that were generously supplied by L. M. Kniffin, Wilfred Wright and Gerald Ballmer. Thanks are due Augustus Locke, Samuel G. AT present the demands of the United States for strontium are met by imports from Germany, England and Canada, which vary considerably in proportions of ore and finished salts, in tonnage and in value. Statistics for the period 1926-1932 are given in Table 1. These deposits are large enough to command interest, par-ticularly in consideration of future cheap power at the Boulder Dam. The deposits described in this paper were examined during an investi¬gation of the, mineral resources of the Boulder Dam region by the United States Geological Survey for the United States Bureau of Reclamation' in the spring of 1934. Mr. D. F. Hewett, who had general charge of the investigation, Mr. W. T. Schaller and Mr. M. I. Goldman contributed many helpful suggestions. Mr. N. H. Finances. : Income continues to increase the total for the year 1935, being $141,754 compared with $134,967 in 1934, and $121,689 in 1933, which was the lowest reached during the depression. The principal increases were $2000 in Current Dues; $2400 in Dues from New Members; $2000 for Advertising in the monthly magazine MINING AND METAL¬LURGY; and $1600 in Sales of Authors' Reprints and TRANSACTIONS volumes. Income from Dues in Arrears was $1000 less as a consequence of the fact that arrearages had been largely reduced during 1934, so that there were fewer from which to draw.

To maintain a competitive position in the world market in spite of higher domestic labor costs, the U.S. has been forced to the forefront in developing labor saving devices. This has resulted in automation in our factories, mechanization in our mines, and development of faster and more economical methods of transportation. Since World War II the domestic mining industry has suffered perhaps more than any other sector of our economy. When we assisted our allies-and our enemies-to get back on their feet following the ravages of war we were perhaps overly generous in providing funds and technical assistance to develop foreign mining industries that have since become thorns in the side of our own industry. It has become imperative that domestic industry exert its vigor to meet the challenge of foreign competition. While the domestic industry can meet this challenge of foreign competition in part by protective tariffs, quotas and governmental aid, the most effective way is to maintain technological superiority that will reduce manpower requirements and costs and increase productivity. There is this opportunity both in mineral processing and in mining.

This investigation was undertaken to determine the quality of different iron blast-furnace slags as desulfurizing agents, and the possibility of using, in the blast furnace, materials of higher sulfur content than is now common. The solution of the problem would render possible the use of higher sulfur iron ores for pig iron and cokes containing more sulfur than now employed, and the economic manufacture of irons and steels of lower sulfur content. It is generally assumed that the sulfur that reaches the lower part of the iron blast furnace is removed from the pig iron by combining with lime to form calcium sulfide. Most of the sulfur introduced with the charge is in combination with iron or manganese or, perhaps in the coke, as a carbon compound.1 The iron and manganese sulfides are more soluble in the iron than is calcium sulfide, and as the latter is generally said to to be more soluble in the slag than the iron and manganese sulfides, this greater solubility of calcium sulfide in the slag tends to free the metal from sulfur. This greater solubility of the calcium sulfide is used not only to reduce the sulfur contents of the pig iron in the blast furnace, but by this means also low-sulfur steels are produced in the open-hearth and electric furnaces. The reaction2 FeS + CaO + CO = Fe + CaS + CO2 requires a high temperature and strongly reducing conditions in the presence of lime.
