THE New Cornelia Branch of the Phelps Dodge Corporation is at Ajo, Pima County, Ariz. It is at the southern terminus of the Tucson, Cornelia and Gila Bend Railroad, which connects with the Southern Pacific Railroad at Gila Bend, Ariz., approximately 43 miles to the north. HISTORY Early history of the Ajo district has been related by A. W. Allen1 and by T. A. Rickard.2 Briefly, steps looking to the large-scale development of the ore body were instituted as early as 1912. This work culminated in the equipment of the property for open-pit mining by steam shovels. Ores initially mined carried economic amounts of copper carbonates as the principal copper-bearing mineral. Treatment methods developed for the extraction of the copper content involved leaching and a 5000-ton leaching plant was constructed and placed in operation in early 1917. Description of methods and equipment employed in this plant has been given by A. A. Tobelmann and James A. Potter.3 As exhaustion of the carbonate ore body neared, and mining operations exposed an adequate tonnage of sulphide ores, a 5000-ton concentrator was constructed for their treatment. That plant has been described by H. Kenyon Burch.4 Construction was completed and the plant was placed in operation in early 1924. Changes made in the original plant to improve practices and increase production will be the subject of subsequent paragraphs of this paper.

THE Hawkesworth detachable drill steel shank and bit were invented by A. L. Hawkesworth; while he was a mechanical foreman for the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., at Butte, Mont. Mr. Hawkesworth died on June 16, 1925, at the time that his invention was practically a proved success. The first application for patents was made by him in November, 1918, and the bit is now being manufactured under patents issued in 1922 and 1923. The credit, for its development in the early stages belongs to A. L. Hawkesworth, Roy S. Alley, Harry A. Gallwey, E. J. Bowman and various officials of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. Later improvements, manufacturing problems and the direct usage in the mines were originated and perfected by the mechanical department under C. D. Woodward, E. R. Borcherdt, head of the Rock Drill Equipment Department, Robert E. Kelly of the Mechanical Department, and various operating department heads of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. The author wishes to acknowledge the assistance of these officials in the preparation of this paper.

Mining examinations are of several kinds and the scope of the investigation depends in each case upon the purpose for which the examination is made. A formal examination of a developed mine is an expensive undertaking; from one to several months are allowed for the work according to the size of the property; many samples are taken; investigation is made of the geological features, including, perhaps, a topographical and geological survey of the surface; the metallurgical treatment of the ore is studied; finally, a determination of costs is demanded. Formal examinations are made for prospective purchasers or as a basis for the consolidation of several properties, and occasionally, in the owner's behalf, to verify the work of resident engineers, or to determine the readiness of a mine for equipment and the kind and capacity of equipment it shall receive. A formal examination of a mine should not be undertaken until a preliminary examination has shown that it is justified. It is regrettable that some engineers are in the habit of prosecuting long and exhaustive examinations of properties whose lack of merit should be, and perhaps is, apparent from the start, or of continuing their investigation long after an unfavorable result is seen to be inevitable. This wasting of a client's money is a species of trickery difficult to prove, and therefore the more contemptible. During the past year, the Bureau of Mines has carried on an investigation of liquid-oxygen explosives (L.O.X.) to supplement the work described in previous publications.' The present paper gives results of the first part of this work, which was a laboratory investigation of the properties of typical combustibles used in L.O.X., and the relation of these properties to the absorption and retention of oxygen by the explosives and their explosive characteristics. No attempt will be made to describe the development of liquid-oxygen explosives, because this phase of the subject has been well covered.2 The L.O.X. cartridge consists of a paper wrapper filled with an absorbent combustible material that is saturated with liquid oxygen by soaking it therein. After saturation, the cartridge is removed from the liquid and fired with fuse and cap, or electric detonator, in a manner similar to other explosives. Certain types of cartridge may be detonated with fuse alone, requiring no cap to initiate the detonation. ' By suitable variation of the nature and density of the combustible, cartridges having a wide variety of explosive characteristics may be made.

Movement of water through the Tehachapi Mountains was one of the most challenging parts of the planning, design, and construction of the California Aqueduct. The California Aqueduct is the main artery of the California State Water Project, which will move water 444 miles from the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta into the arid and semiarid, densely populated parts of Southern California. The $2,000,000,000 project, designed and constructed by the California State Dept. of Water Resources, was started in 1957 at the Oroville Dam site and is now well past the halfway mark in construction. Water is now being delivered from the California Aqueduct to portions of the San Joaquin Valley. The California Aqueduct is scheduled for completion in 1972. Tunnels on the Tehachapi Crossing are often overshadowed in engineering descriptions of the Crossing by the tremendous importance and engineering significance of the Tehachapi pumping plant which will pump water through the tunnel system. For purposes of this paper, it will suffice to say that the plant is designed to lift 4100 cu ft of water per sec up approximately 2000 ft, making this the highest pumplift in the United States and one of the largest in the world. Water will be moved from the pumping plant through twin tunnels called the Tehachapi Discharge Lines to the top of the lift. From here, water will flow through four additional tunnels which are all linked by short connecting structures (Fig. 1). The tunnels are referred to as Tunnels 1, 2, 3, and Carley V. Porter Tunnel. Sparry dolomite from all of the operating mines in the Viburnum Trend of Southeast Missouri have been found by cathodoluminescence microscopy to reveal a systematic pattern of banding resulting from a growth zoning within individual dolomite rhombs. Four principal bands have been recognized throughout the entire Trend and each of the major bands contain even finer internal banding. Minor bands a few microns in width can be correlated in specimens collected ten's of kilometers apart along the trend. The first three principal dolomite bands decrease from south to north. This feature, together with the fact that the white sparry dolomite crystals decrease in abundance from south to north in the Trend, suggests that a major source for the fluids was from the south. The application of cathodoluminescence microscopy to crystalline dolomite demonstrates a strong correlation between ore grade and the intensity of internal banding and dissolution textures.

The interest shown recently in selenium and tellurium has brought many requests for an assembling of the analytical chemistry of these two elements. The intention of this paper is to discuss all of the chemical principles utilized in the detection and quantitative determination of these elements, as well as to describe the works methods actually followed by producers of tellurium and selenium in the United States. These methods have been furnished by S. Skowronski of the Raritan Copper Works, H. D. Greenwood of the United States Metals Refining Co., F. F. Colcord of the U. S. S. Lead Refinery, and E. W. Rouse and A. E. Hall of the American Smelting and Refining Company. Occurrence Selenium is found associated with sulfur, to which in many respects it is quite similar. Occasionally deposits of native sulfur, notably those in the Lipari Islands, Kilauea, and Japan, show a red-brown coloration, I which is readily distinguished from that of other sulfur; this red-brown * sulfur contains a small amount of selenium. Not infrequently, the , sulfides of the heavy metals are accompanied by selenium and tellurium, • presumably as selenides and tellurides. The application of wet cleaning processes for the beneficiation of bituminous coal has created in some localities a problem in the recovery and disposal of fine solids in the washery water. The maximum allowable concentration of these solids in the washery circuit that is consistent with satisfactory operation of the cleaning units remains a controversial point. It has, however, been generally recognized for a number of years that some degree of control should be exerted over the concentration of such material. Early methods of control involved intermittent or continuous discharge of a portion of the plant slurry into near-by streams or settling ponds, and this persisted even after the adoption of settling tanks or cones. The practice is not always economical, for two reasons: first, because of the waste of coal, and, second, because it is sometimes difficult and expensive to obtain an adequate supply of water. The latter condition often is aggravated by chemical treatment of the make-up water that is necessary to prevent excessive corrosion of plant equipment. The modern approach to this problem has been the adoption of continuous thickening devices. However, because such equipment occupies considerable plant space and is somewhat expensive to construct, the practice of loading these thickeners beyond their rated capacity is widespread, therefore often the performance of such units is not altogether satisfactory. In recent years, European washeries have increased the rate of settling of the fine coal from the slurry by the addition of specially prepared starch solutions. These reagents cause flocculation of the solid particles and thereby increase the rate of sedimentation. The first important work on the flocculation and clarification of coal slurry was done by Henry, who developed the Henry process and used it successfully in Belgian preparation plants. The mines of the Arizona Copper Co. are situated in the Morenci-Metcalf copper district in southeastern Arizona. This copper-bearing district covers a triangular mountainous area of about 3 square miles, rising abruptly from the gravel plateau of the surrounding country. In this area, an immense intrusion of porphyry lias displaced, shattered, and engulfed the shales, limestones, and quartzites formerly bedded on the basal granite. Outcrops of oxide ore were discovered in 1873, and these surface ores were found to connect in depth with large bodies of high-grade oxide ores in the limestones and shales. The mining of these high-grade ores continued until about 1893, when their rapid exhaustion led to the discovery and exploitation of the low-grade sulphide ores in the adjoining porphyry. Methods of concentration were then devised and the low-grade ores finally rendered profitable. The Arizona Copper Co. and the Detroit Copper Mining Co., operating in the same district, were the pioneers in the successful development of the low-grade "porphyry" properties of to-day. The largest mines of the Arizona Copper Co. are the Humboldt and Clay at Morenci, and the Coronado, Metcalf, and King at Metcalf. These mines produce about 4,000 tons daily of concentrating ore containing from 2.5 to 2.8 per cent. copper. The topography of the country is very rugged and mining operations are conducted principally through adit levels. A few of the mines are opened by shafts, the deepest being 1,100 ft., in the Coronado mine. Ore Occurrence The low-grade sulphide ore occurs as: (1) disseminated deposits in the main stock of quartz porphyry; (2) lode deposits in fault fissures in granite. The high-grade oxide ores were found as tabular deposits in limestone and shale close to contacts with porphyry dikes. Low-grade oxide ore formed the outcrop of some of the sulphide orebodies; the majority of the outcrops, however, were barren.

The paper describes the lead refining process operated at Norddeutsche Affinerie (N.A.). Incoming materials are different grades of lead with varying percentages of impurities: Cu, Te, As, Sn, Sb, Bi, precious metals. The facilities are designed for charge-wise operation. After drossing, generally Te, As, Sn and Sb are removed substantially by the Harris Refining Process using fused NaOH. A certain selectivity during refining is achieved by controlled addition of NaNO3. Another refining step is decopperizing by means of elemental sulfur. Complete separation of Te, As, Sn and Sb is accomplished by chemical methods in a leaching plant. A Howard Press is used in the Parkes Process for desilverizing. After vacuum dezinking in kettle, Bi is removed, if required, by means of Ca and Mg. In an end refining step Ca, Mg and Zn are removed by having the lead melt treated with NaOH and NaN03. The refined lead as such, or in the form of special alloys, is cast by an ingot casting machine into 50-kg ingots. Zinc which is used as a precipitant in the Parkes Process is recovered by distillation from the high grade Ag-Zn-Pb crystals in Faber du Faur retorts while the Pb/Ag alloy is fed to the cupellation furnace. Ca and Mg are removed from the Ca-Mg-Bi crystals formed in the course of Bi removal, and the Bi-bearing lead is cast into anodes. The electrolytic lead refining facilities at N.A. are operated largely for the purpose of separating Pb and Bi. These facilities are also used particularly for the refining of Bi-bearing lead which had gone through the above process, but from which Bi has not been removed by Ca and Mg.

A preceding paragraph treats of the irregular manner in which ore deposits occur and the complex factors that control their distribution; the occurrence of metals in oreshoots in individual deposits is equally irregular, and the factors that control such segregation are equally complex. While the dimen¬sions of oreshoots in individual deposits may not be foretold with any degree of accuracy, the occurrence of ore in shoots is not accidental, but is controlled by laws some of which are understood. Any one familiar with permutations and combina¬tions who stops to consider the variety of factors that control ore deposition, and their varying relative importance, will admit that the science of economic geology must advance greatly before the occurrence of oreshoots may be predicted accurately in advance of exploration. The segregation of minerals in any oreshoot must be referred to some condition, or combination of conditions, local to the oreshoot as compared with the remainder of the deposit of low¬grade or barren minerals. Among the localizing factors that have been recognized are, in filled fissures, the amount and distribution of open spaces available for ore deposition, and in replacement deposits, the degree of brecciation giving access to the replacing solutions; the intersection of veins with other veins, dikes, sheeted zones, or porous strata; the impounding of solutions by impervious strata; and the differing precipitative influences of enclosing rocks. A large proportion of important and well ¬defined oreshoots, especially in deposits of deep-seated origin, are not assignable to any of these factors. The Ozark region occupies a large part of the southern half of Missouri, the northern portion of Arkansas and comparatively smalll areas in northeast Oklahoma, southwest Kansas, and southern Illinois. It is a roughly elliptical plateau which has been deeply dissected by stream erosion, and which slopes imperceptibly into the prairie regions to the north, east, and west, but which terminates rather abruptly along the Arkansas River on the south and Tertiary lowland to the southeast. The Boston Mountains extending for a distance of some 200 miles (321 km.) along the Arkansas River rise to an elevation of 2000 ft. (609 m.), forming the most prominent topographic feature of the region. The so-called St. Frangois Mountains in St. Frangois, Madison, and adjoining counties in southeast Missouri, form a prominent but more restricted topographic feature, the highest point rising to an elevation of 1800 ft. (548 m.). The remainder of the region is largely a plateau area varying from 800 to 1500 ft. (243 to 457 m.) in elevation. Stratigraphy The region is underlain chiefly by sedimentary formations, which outcrop in roughly concentric bands around a comparatively restricted area of igneous rocks in the St. Frangois Mountain district. Although located geographically near the eastern edge of the Osarks, the St. Frangois Mountains have apparently suffered the greatest orogenic movement and the lowest formations of the succession are exposed in their immediate vicinity. The various sedimentary formations of the region do not show any considerable metamorphism and have suffered little change since consolidation. With the exception of a few basic intrusions in Ste. Gene-vievg County and a pegmatite dike in Camden County, Missouri, there is no evidence of igneous action, since the first sedimentary beds were deposited.

DETAILED knowledge of purchase specifications established by coal consumers is essential to the successful design and operation of a coal preparation plant. ANTHRACITE Specifications should be considered by both the consumer and the producer as guide posts outlining a certain path for both to follow. Plants differ, therefore specifications must differ to meet the varied requirements. Specifications are not of themselves a "cureall" or an assurance of complete satisfaction in fuel utilization. Specifications should not be regarded as a license to engage in an orgy of buying any and all coals that may happen to fall within their limits. This would lead to the indiscriminate mixing of coals which may vary in their burning characteristics. Different coals of equal grade tend to be individualistic in their burning characteristics. Rather, specifications should be used to help simplify coal selection, to reduce the actual number of coals used over a given period; in other words, to have a stabilizing influence on coal or customer turnover. In the final analysis, the use of too many coals per year in a plant is costly to both the consumer and the producer. Too many sources usually result in higher operating and maintenance costs for the consumer and higher sales costs for the producer. Finally, the statement included in the report accompanying the comprehensive Coal Selection Charts prepared by the Coal Committee of the National Association of Purchasing Agents, and released in 1938, is significant. This Committee worked diligently for a period of 15 years seeking to find a scientific and reliable method for selecting coals. The two following paragraphs are quoted from its report: More important is the fact that no ready-made classification or set of specifications can possibly replace the judgment and resourcefulness of an experienced combustion engineer or fuel technologist, nor the usual need for full scale plant tests under the exact conditions of use before a final decision is made.

The behavior of steel after overstrain and at moderate temperatures is fairly well known. It has been made the subject of much investigation, and our knowledge is clear and definite on many points. The ultimate raising of the elastic limit, after moderate overstrain, and the consequent lowering of the ductility, seem to be well established. It is also well understood that the immediate effect of overstrain is to lower the elastic limit, possibly to zero, but that if not interfered with, this limit will subsequently rise higher than before. The " tests after moderate temperature," reported in this paper, were undertaken to verify the above statements for the particular steel under investigation, and also to determine, if possible, the total time required for complete recovery from this state of overstrain. The behavior of overstrained steel at temperatures at or below 32" F. is not so well known. Tests made by Prof. E. G. Coker, at McGill University,' show that steel, overstrained and subjected to cold, will remain in a state of overstrain for an indefinite period. I am not aware of any other published results of tests along this particular line. The effect of time and temperature on the recovery of steel from overstrain was made in 1902-3 the subject of some investigation in the laboratories of the College of Civil Engineering of Cornell University. A general plan was outlined in connection with the regular courses of instruction in testing of materials; but the press of routine work and the demands of the schedules on the time of the students were so great as to presage long delay in the completion of the work. SECTIONS 1. INTRODUCTION.—In this investigation the meltingpoint and the specific heat of certain artificial silicates were determined by the method of mixtures, using a large platinum-ball pyrometer. The silicates were placed in platinum crucibles on the hearth of a small regenerative gas-furnace (Figs. 1 and 2), and the platinum ball was placed between them. The temperature of the furnace was usually raised very slowly, the behavior of the silicates being observed as they gradually grew hotter; and their temperature was ascertained indirectly from time to time by determining that of the platinum ball, which to that end was temporarily withdrawn from the furnace and immersed in a known weight of water in a calorimeter. The weight and specific heat of water and of platinum ball being known (the specific heat of the latter approximately), it mas possible to calculate the temperature of the platinum ball, which was assumed to have been substantially that of the silicates which surrounded it in the furnace. The specific heat of the silicates also was determined by the method of mixtures. Their temperature having been determined as just described, one of them was dropped into a known weight of water in a calorimeter, whose rise of temperature was then noted. Knowing the weight and initial temperature of the silicate, its specific heat was wily calculated. The reults obtained, especially as regards the melting-point, must be regarded as first approximations. The technical difficulties encountered were so serious as to raise doubts, now from one cause, .now from another, as to the accuracy of most of the results: hence I give but a few, those which were reached without mishap, and with proper observation of the various precautions. EXPLORATORY WORK THE related subjects of preferred orientation, directionality in physical properties, and earing tendencies of wrought metal [ ] strip have attracted the attention of metallurgists to such an extent that in the past 20 years hundreds of researches have been published on this one general problem. The anisotropy of tensile strength and elongation have been exhaustively studied in their relationship to the occurrence of ears in cups drawn from strips-20.29 and, to a lesser extent, yield strength7,11,17 and stress-strain curves" have been investigated. Despite the tremendous fund of knowledge thus accrued, no simple quantitative correlation of directionality and earing tendencies has yet been found. In a sense, this is not surprising. The formation of ears in a drawn cup clearly is a special phase of the general study of metal flow; in particular (as will be brought out in the course of this paper), ears are due to anistropy in the rates of deformation of the metal in the radial, circumferential, and "thickness" directions of the original blank. It would be difficult to effect a correlation between earing tendency and a property that may be completely independent of the flow of metal, or at best related to metal flow in an exceedingly complex fashion. Yet, it is this correlation that has been attempted; tensile strength and elongation are attributes of metal rupture, a phenomenon that has quite admirably been shown to be distinct from the phenomenon of metal flow,21 while yield strength and stress-strain
