Roughly, a crack in a casting may be considered, for the moment, to be due to fracture of the alloy resulting from the stress set up by the contraction in volume on passing from the liquid to the solid state. Cracks may be external or surface, internal or deep-seated, or incipient or so-called strain cracks. Draws may appear as depressions, unevenness, and "pinching in" of the surface of a casting. Roughly, draws are due to contraction in volume and are governed largely by the same factors as cracks. A casting may be cracked, however, without being drawn. Shrinkage is a foundry term and refers to the contractio~l in volume of a metal or alloy on passing from the liquid to the solid state. Patternmaker's shrinkage is the total contraction in volume (including liquid, solidification, and solid shrinkage) that occurs when an alloy is poured into a mold. The contraction in volume of aluminum is one of the principal factors affecting the occurrence of cracks, as will be shown later, and the question of shrinkage and its control requires careful study in any treatment of cracking in castings. In the case of sand and die castings, cracks have been attributed to a number of causes, but in the case of most light aluminum alloys, they are due to the large contraction in volume on freezing and the lack of its regulation or control. The most important factors are: (1) Contraction in volume; (2) composition of alloy; (3) quality of melting charge; (4) design of casting; (5) method of molding; (6) hardness of ramming; (7) method of gating; (8) hardness and characteristics of cores; (9) chills; (10) risers; (11) melting temperatures; (12) furnace used for melting; (13) pouring temperatures; (14) inclusions in alloys; (15) hot shortness of alloys; and (16) physical properties of alloys at high temperatures. Of these, the first, second, third, and eleventh to sixteenth involve ascertainable metallurgical facts; the remainder are largely matters of opinion, judgment, and technical knowledge of men experienced in the production of castings.

Knowledge of the depth of penetralion of an oxygen jet into the bath of the oxygen converter and of the correlation of penetration with driuing pressuve, lance heighl, and nozzle throat area is vital to the understanding of converter operation. If the penetration is too shallow, then severe and hazardous slopping takes place. On the other hand, if the jel penetrates entirely Lhvough lhe bath for an apprcciublc period of time, bottom damage occurs. In addilion to measurement of the penetralion of the jel, knou~ledge of the circulatory movement in the bath is also of interest in order to evaluale various theories oj-concerter operating behavior which have been published. In this investigation, experimental converters were buill of IOU- , 300-, and 4000-lb capacity. Four independent methods were used to determine penelralion: the onset of bottom marking, a nitrogen bubbler probe, observation througlt an optical syslew built into the oxygen lance, and direcl viewing of the jet issuing from the bottom of the vessel. Good correlation zuas obtained, and empirical relalions for pvedicling perletration were found. These relations were conjzrmed by bottom marking tests in 55- and 110-ton vessels. Within the operaling conditions employed in these tests, the depth to which a single oxygen jet penetrated zuas found lo vary according to the relatiorl ThE technical literature is replete with data concerning the successful use of the basic oxygen furnace or converter in steelmaking. Experimental data are lacking, however, on the vital factors of the depth of penetration of the jet into the bath and the induced circulation. Commercial operating conditions usually have been the result of cut and try experiments in lance manipulation until satisfactory results were obtained. There have been, however, two hotly argued opposing theories concerning desirable depth of penetration and these are exemplified by the Schwarz and Miles patents1,2 on one hand and the Suess patent3 on the other. The Schwarz patent teaches that the jet, issuing from the nozzle at supersonic speed, penetrates deeply "so that the reactions between the iron and the oxygen and between the oxygen and the rest of the smelting components take place in the center of the bath". Specific operating suggestions are given by Miles.2 By contrast, the Suess patent calls for surface Circulalion was investigated by lour methods: by direct observation in 200-lb open baths, by the use of graphite rudders in the 300- and 4000-lb converlers, by direct observalion through an oplical system in the lance, and by various models al room temperature. All were in excellent agreement and indicated that the motion of the bath ulas up at the center, radially outluavd at the surface, and down at the sides. Experi-ments in small and in commercial vessels indicate that it is essential to operate with a jet penetration of approximately 50 pct of the bath depth. Surface blowing results in low oxygen eficienty and in hazardous conditions which may render the process inopeuable. RejYactory dartzage al the bottom of the vessel is only encountered when the jet penetrates to the bottom, and this can be avoided by properly applying the penetration formula. The application of this en/pirical formula in commercial peraations is best when limited to combinations of lance size, pressure, and height which are typically encounteved in the use of a single-hole lance. blowing so that "...the oxygen jet does not penetrate deeply into the molten metal bath and is confined to an impingement area at the central portion of the bath surface". These references are given merely to illustrate the basic differences between the two schools of thought and to point out the need for measurement of penetration for the sake of the operator. For example, it is shown later that inefficient and even dangerous conditions can arise if improper blowing conditions are used. Differences are also evident between the two schools of thought as to the mixing, circulation, and agitation which is to be accomplished by the jet. The Schwarz patent states that "surface contact is not sufficient in most cases to bring about quick reaction, the same as the blowing of the gas over the bath surface or the mere blowing of the gas onto the bath surface". The patent goes on to call for active mixing. In contrast the claims of the Suess patent call for "discharging a stream of oxygen ... to an extent to avoid material agitation of the bath by the oxygen stream". In this patent the circulation is said to be downward in the center and up at the sides of the vessel. A number of investigators4-12 have explored penetration and circulation in transparent models. In general, it is agreed in these tests that the circulation is upward at the center (along the sides of the jet cavity),

The selection and sizing of filters depends on the characteristics of the type of filter and the feed slurry. In addition, the rate functions of cake formation, cake washing and cake dewatering must be determined in order to design the filter station on the basis of desired performance. This chapter discusses the applied theory used to determine the rate functions and illustrates how to incorporate these into the filter cycle to obtain the required objectives. This also permits the sizing of the filter and auxiliaries as well as the selection of the proper type of filter.

Y., to prove its application for this work. It is the purpose of this article to present some of the test results, operational details and advantages of cyclone thickening and classification. The metallurgy of the mill operation was described by Frank R. Milliken, assistant manager of the titanium division.

The importance of the Widmanstätten structure to structure theory in metallography has been recognized by many writers.l It is a structure produced by the precipitation of a, new phase from a solid solution upon cooling as a result of changing solid solubility, and displays a characteristic appearance indicating a crystallographic relationship between the new phase and the original solid solution (Fig. 1). First discovered in 1808 by Alois de Widmanstätten2, the structure has been traced by analogy through many alloy systems. Particularly is this true of the steels. Sorby's classic work3 on the microstructure of iron and steel was in essence an attempt to explain the origin of this characteristic structure in meteoric iron. He observed in a Ressemer steel and in a cast-steel ingot structures which we now recognize as typical Widmanstatten figures.4 Osmond Observed structures in a steel ingot analog-ous to those found in meteorites. Dynamic rock mechanic as it pertains to blasting has involved several areas of active research effort. Among the important problems which have been the subject of research are wave mechanics in rocks, mechanisms of rock breakage, cratering, applications of similitude, energy partitioning of explosives, coupling, and other related factors. In some of these areas many problems have received fairly complete answers, while in others, investigations have raised new questions while attempting to answer existing ones. The slabbing mechanism explains many of the phenomena observed in blasting, but is hot the complete answer to observed breakage and fragmentation phenomena. There is currently a gap between coupling experimental results and theory. Applications of similitude to open pit blasting have been made unnecessarily complicated. Basic scaling laws for large true and apparent craters have not been derived for either chemical or nuclear explosives. There are few useful data and little developed theory on the partitioning of energy of explosives in all types of blasting. No suitable mathematical model has been developed which will describe the stress waves in rock which are responsible for rock breakage: Significant progress has been and is being made in these areas of research, however. ELASTIC AND NONELASTIC WAVES Complete solutions for spherical wave equations in viscoelastic media are not available in the literature. Equations for certain viscoelastic models do show limited promise, however, of being applicable to rock masses, particularly for pulse type phenomena. The Henderson mine uses the panel caving method to extract molybdenum ore from a deep ore body in an igneous intrusive. Research into caving mechanics and its related problems has yielded fundamental relationships concerning the response of a stressed rock mass to the caving method. The relationships studied through a variety of programs include the following: the evaluation of time and distance related stress fields; the monitoring of the deformation of underground openings and the design implications; ground and mining sequence classifications compared to past support requirements; the response of finite rock masses to zones of high stress concentrations; the evaluation of the subsidence induced by caving; and the microseismic monitoring of cave growth. The cumulative objective of this research is to better understand, predict, and control rock mass response.

Surveying and mapping are used to locate and visually portray objects, lines, or areas in relation to a reference point or line. The actual making of the measurements to locate the objects and points falls under surveying while mapping is concerned with putting the survey information into a graphical form. Generally, the type or class of proposed survey depends on the precision required. Some surveys may need only approximate measurements which can be obtained by simply pacing or by using an ordinary measuring tape; others may require much accuracy, thus calling for the use of an engineer's transit or theodolite along with a graduated steel tape for horizontal measurements, or a level and a graduated rod for measuring vertical distances. Mapping is likewise dependent on accuracy requirements. For example, a general layout showing the relative position of surface facilities may not call for a large scale of dimension or great precision whereas for detailed work, a large scale plus care in plotting points and drawing lines and curves are important factors. SURVEYING METHODS There are many kinds or types of surveying methods. Some examples include: land surveying for determining boundaries of land areas ; route surveying for locating roads, highways, right-of-ways, and haulways; city surveying for laying out lots, streets, and alleys ; and mining surveying for projecting mine openings and locating mining operations. There are other types of surveying than those named, but in general, the type of method to be used will depend on the purpose for which the survey is to be made.

Numerous laboratory tests and field measurements conducted by different persons have indicated that most mine rocks behave viscoelastically rather than elastically. Hence, for an accurate and realistic design of underground structure, the time factor should be taken into account, and the theory of viscoelasticity can be used. By considering the time factor, the time-safe-strength may be used for economical design instead of liberal safety factors with design based on the elasticity theory. The deflection and moment distributions on an elastic roof slab resting on elastic pillars have already been studied.l In this chapter, the stress- strain analysis for a viscoelastic mine roof resting on pillars of the same material or on supports of different material is first considered theoretically. Viscoelastic solutions for deflections, moments, and shears are de- rived from the elastic plate theory on the basis of the elastic-viscoelastic correspondence principle. The Laplace transformation technique is employed as the operational method in the mathematical treatment. The roof slab materials are represented by four different rheological models and four different loading histories are considered. The method of finite difference equations is employed for solving the partial differential equations, using FORTRAN programs to calculate roof deflections, moments, and shears. Numerical examples are given for one of the four models under two of the four loading histories with regular and staggered pillar patterns. The results are discussed in terms of the variance with time of deflections, moments, and shears as well as their variation in space due to the dimensions and configuration of the structure system. THE correct sampling of coal and coke is becoming important to an ever increasing number of producers and consumers. This, therefore, may be an opportune moment to examine where we stand with regard to existing and proposed methods. In this paper an attempt will be made to review, as briefly as possible, some of the considerable amount of painstaking research which has been done in the last 10 years, and which has unquestionably led to a much better understanding of the subject. In so doing we shall try, on the one hand, to make clear where substantial progress has been made, and on the other hand, to draw attention to points that require further investigation. The paper is divided into sections in order to emphasize the major divisions of the subject; further, in order to retain this emphasis, detailed consideration of some of the points has been relegated to appendixes. No attempt has been made to give a complete survey of the literature, as this has already been done by L. A. DUring the summer of 1905 I was employed by the U. S. Geological Survey to investigate the geology, mining, and preparation of barite in most of the fields of the United States. The Eastern districts have been more or less completely described; the Virginia field in detail by Thomas L. Watson, in his paper, Geology of the Virginia Barite-Deposits,' and other fields in abstract, including statistics of production and references to current literature, by various authors.2 There have also been published a few details of the occurrence of barite in the lead-mines of Washington county, Mo.³ The other accounts of this district are erroneous and meager, and since this field is the most important one in the United States at the present time, a detailed description of the local geology seems doubly desirable. Barite-deposits are scattered over nearly the whole of Washington and adjoining counties, but the product is all mined from the areas indicated upon the sketch-map, Fig. 1, and is shipped from the stations of the St. Louis, Iron Mountain & Southern railway, between Blackwell and Potosi, from 45 to 60 miles SW. of St. Louis. The topography is for the most part gently rolling, with slightly graded streams, usually less than 200 ft. below the higher hill-tops. THE purpose of this paper is to set forth the matters of principal interest in connection with work done in the past few years on the purification of the metals of the platinum group, including the study and modification of methods already in the literature and the development of new procedures. For the most part, the results will be given in summary form, reserving the publication of detailed data and directions for a forthcoming paper to be issued by the Bureau of Standards. In recent years increasing interest has been shown in the preparation of the pure platinum metals, both by those concerned with the manufacture of the metals and their alloys for scientific and industrial purposes and those who are engaged in the study of the chemical or physical properties of the elements. The purification of the metals usually has been regarded as a matter so involved and difficult as to require the attention of specialists. It is hoped that this paper will show that any of the metals can be prepared in any desired degree of purity by relatively simple straightforward chemical methods. For the most part, it is thought that the methods given are suitable for small-scale refineries as well as for the laboratory; also, that they will bring the time required for the purification of any of the metals within reasonable limits. The new procedure suggested for purifying platinum should prove to be much shorter than any methods described in the literature.
