KNOWING the endpoint, or the equilibrium state, in steelmaking reactions is only part of the story. The rate at which the reactions proceed can be equally important. But the power of thermodynamics, which enables us to estimate the endpoint, is that a knowledge of the mechanism is not required. The methods of kinetics, however, are step-by-step analysis in which a knowledge of the detailed reaction mechanism is essential. As is evident from Chapter 16, a great deal of thermo- dynamic data for steelmaking are available and the underlying theory rests on a completely sound basis. This is far from the case with kinetic data and even kinetic theory. Nevertheless, it is worthwhile to examine the present state of knowledge, to see how far it may be applied to electric furnace reactions. KINETIC THEORY Heterogeneous Reactions. Classical kinetic theory and experimentation have been mainly concerned with homogeneous reactions taking place between different chemical species in a gas or liquid phase. The species are mixed together and the progress of the reaction can then be observed. This is possible because most experiments have been done at relatively low temperatures where the characteristic time for the mixing process is much shorter than the time for the chemical reaction to be completed. For example, in the homogeneous gas reaction, H2 (g) + I2 (g) 2HI (g) hydrogen and iodine may be added to opposite ends of a tube containing a diaphragm. When this is withdrawn, gaseous diffusion (and convection) mixes the two types of molecule almost completely before any hydrogen iodide molecules begin to appear. Such an experiment is inconceivable at more elevated temperatures, since the rate of the chemical process is so sensitive to temperature that reaction would be completed almost instantaneously wherever hydrogen and iodine came into contact; the rate of the mixing process would then determine the rate at which hydrogen iodide was formed. We should not, therefore, expect to observe many homogeneous reac-

An investigation of the behavior of inclusions in steel several years ago1 led to the conclusion that some of the commonly occurring inclusions in steel have appreciable solubilities, particularly in liquid steel. In the belief that further study and clarification of this matter was warranted, a laboratory study of oxides in liquid steel was started. These oxides are generally the result of deoxidation treatment, and the basis of an understanding of their behavior must be, therefore, the behavior of the deoxidizer in liquid iron. The Fe-Si-O system was selected for the first study, and the apparatus used and experiments conducted are described herein. Apparatus The apparatus is shown in Fig. r and the system is shown by diagram in Fig. 2. Furnace, A lmosphere Commercial hydrogen (1) passes through an orifice (2) into a manometric system that measures the tankside pressure (3) and the back pressure (4) in the system. A water trap (5) guards against excess tankside pressure. A by-pass with stopcocks (6 and 7) is provided, so that the hydrogen can be routed directly from the tank to the furnace if desired. When stopcock 7 is closed and stopcock 6 is open, the gas proceeds through the conditioning train, of which the first unit is a furnace (8) that contains platinized asbestos at 350°C. The temperature is measured by a thermocouple and potentiometer (9) and is controlled by a slidewire resistance (10). In this furnace fres oxygen is converted to water vapor. The exiting gas passes over a water bath (11) kept slightly below boiling temperature by an auxiliary heating unit (12). This unit also heats a surrounding copper coil (13) containing water, and the heated water rises through a collar (14)

This chapter presents modern concepts of the flotation of nonmetallic minerals. In particular, it is concerned with such minerals as metal oxides, silicates, sulfates, carbonates, and halides. It is not the purpose to duplicate the two excellent, recent treatises by Gaudin l and by Sutherland and ark,^ but rather to expand their correlations of data, particularly in view of recent, ex- citing new experiments which are shedding new light on the principles of non- metallic flotation. Outstanding success has been achieved over the past 50 years in separating one sulfide from another or from the gangue constituents using a minimal amount of reagents. In contrast to this, selective flotation in nonmetallic systems is often difficult in that one class of compounds alone, the carboxylic acids, may float nearly the entire array of nonmetallic minerals under the appropriate conditions. Moreover, while lime, cyanide, sodium sulfide, and copper sulfate constitute the principal modifiers used to obtain selectivity among the various sulfides, the nonmetallic mineral flotation engineer is con- fronted with a vast array of modifying reagents. In sulfide and native-metal flotation, a strong chemical adsorptive bond is generally formed between the mineral and sulfhydral collector. In fact, re- cent radio-tracer studies show that below monolayer coverage as much as 98% of added mercaptan is adsorbed on the surface of gold.? Contrasted to this, Bloecher's data indicate that for the quartz-amine system only about 60% of the collector is adsorbed.4 This greater residual concentration in the solution results from weaker forces of adsorption in the quartz-amine system. In the flotation of nonmetallic oxide minerals, collector adsorption results from rather weak physical forces, primarily electrostatic attraction and van der Waals attraction between hydrocarbon chains. In the flotation of salt-type minerals, carboxylic acids are adsorbed both by physical and chemical forces. It is a study of the effect of the electrical forces superimposed on the chemical adsorptive forces that contributes most toward understanding nonmetallic mineral flotation. The need for quantification of general rules for the flotation of nonmetallic minerals is so great that Taggart 5 with unmasked sarcasm suggested that after trying anionic and cationic collectors:

THIS report is the first of a series planned by The Mineral Inquiry, organized by the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers to make factual studies of the world's mineral resources in their political and international relations. The efforts of The Inquiry are directed toward filling certain notable gaps in available information, without duplication of many other investigations touching this field which are being conducted by other organizations, public and private. Much of its work is indirect-suggesting topics for study by other individuals and organizations and aiding in their planning and correlation. The present report is designed to show the nationality of the commercial control of mineral resources, in addition to the geographic distribution of production by nation-in other words, the overlapping of political and commercial control. Detailed accuracy cannot be claimed for the figures presented. For some companies division of ownership by nationality has been very difficult to ascertain, as many companies are reluctant to dis-close the extent of their holdings in other corporations, and the impossi-bility of tracing all stock ownership is obvious. Also there are frequent changes in the distribution of. stock control. The percentages given rep-resent only the participation that has been identified definitely, even though it is known in some cases with fair certainty that larger interests exist, as, for instance, American participation in foreign chromite companies. In bringing together these figures we have had the cordial co-operation of the United States Bureau of Mines, the United States Geologi-cal Survey, the Mineral Division of the Bureau of Foreign and Domestic Commerce, the Brookings Institution, and of many specialists connected with the mineral industries covered. The report does not cover the entire list of minerals. Coal, although it is one of the most important minerals, was omitted because , not more than one or two per cent of the world's production comes from mines that are owned by companies foreign to the countries where the coal is produced. Others, such as gold, are omitted because sufficient data have not yet been accumulated. It is hoped that some of these may be covered in subsequent reports. It is not our purpose here to discuss the significance of the figures sub-mitted, but only to point out the general nature of the problems on which they have a bearing.

GILBERT Coal producers are not only faced with the problems of mining coal, but must also decide to what extent they can invest capital and what operating and maintenance expense they can afford, after mining, to market their product in sufficient volume and at a reasonable profit. Regardless of whether the operator is contemplating a new operation or merely considering expanding present facilities, market requirements, ability to make a product meeting requirements, probable costs and possible future changes in raw coal or finished product must be considered. In addition, such items as flow sheet, structural designs, storage facilities, etc, must be examined individually and collectively. In estimating preparation costs to meet predetermined market specifications, the operator must calculate the economics of present preparation practices to anticipate the increase to total production which results when the quality of the finished product is increased. The consumers of coal are continually seeking to obtain the best and most adaptable product for their money. Regardless of whether coal is used for coking, industrial requirements, electric power generation, domestic fuel or for other purposes, it will be scrutinized from such standpoints as delivered cost, suitability for utilization in certain equipment, ease of ash disposal, adaptability to material handling system plans and its potential for generating dust problems. Utilities, due to large capacity volume requirements, are generally in a position to select coal that will result in the lowest over-all cost per million Btu. Freight costs, paid by the utility, are important and are given utmost consideration when a coal is under consideration. Steel companies, whether producing or purchasing coking coal, are continually seeking coal that will result in lowering the cost of pig iron production. Since it is usually necessary to clean to lower specific gravities, say 1.40, to turn out a product meeting metallurgical requirements, it follows that a high ash "middling" product is created. These low quality middlings do not command a good price. Therefore, unless the metallurgical coal can command sufficient realization to carry or subsidize the middlings, the operator may be ahead economically to prepare steam coal at a higher specific gravity. While the "unit-train" rate reductions have been helpful to the economy of the coal industry, the establishment of these rates has made mandatory the installation of storage and rapid car loading facilities at mines and plants shipping utility coal (see Chapter 15). The progress of mineral industry education will be limited to the period prior to World War II and will be considered as primarily a division of engineering education. Its relation to progress in the mineral industry and to the activities of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers will be emphasized. The history of mineral industry education has been recorded most completely and authoritatively by Dr. T. T. Read in his recent volume in the Seeley W. Mudd Series of American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers publications, entitled, The Development of Mineral Industry Education in the United States. Therefore, most of the historical details will be omitted from the discussion and an effort will be made to point out significant developments and to analyze trends. Introductory Statement and Significant Points in Progress Among the significant points in the development of mineral industry education in the United States since 1871, the following deserve particular mention: 1. The number of institutions offering undergraduate instruction has increased, particularly during the years 1890 to 1925; the number of students enrolled in undergraduate study has increased greatly, largely on account of the development of courses in petroleum engineering and increasing interest in metallurgy. 2. The selection of students to be admitted to undergraduate courses has been improved through the advisement, counseling, and guidance programs sponsored by the Engineers' Council for Professional Development. 3. Improved instruction methods all the training of the teaching staff have been promoted by the educational institutions themselves, but with the most effective stimulus and guidance of the American Society for Engineering Education and the Engineers' Council for Professional Development. 4. The accrediting of undergraduate curricula through the Engineers' Council for Professional Development, consitlering both qualitative and quantitative criteria, has done much to improve standards of instruction in engineering education for thc mineral industry. 5. Undergraduate curricula and courses are revised currently to meet the needs of the American mineral industry. New curricula are developed currently to permit specialization in technical fields, particularly in the fourth year of undergraduate work. 6. There has been a strengthening of the fundamental courses in mathematics, physics, mechanics, and chemistry, and at the same time these courses are being adapted to the most recent developments in the industry, including metallurgy, geophysics. petroleum engineering, petroleum technology, ceramics and SO forth. 7' There has been continuing improvement in plant and laboratory facilities of the educational institutions.

THE refining period of an open-hearth heat blends imperceptibly into the finishing period, during which final adjustments are made in slag composition, in bath action and temperature, and in composition of the steel, in order to prepare it for casting into ingots. Operations must be governed by the consideration that alterations in the character of the heat during the finishing period must be held to a minimum. In a broad sense, the finishing and deoxidation period of a heat may be said to be- gin when the action of the last ore addition has ceased, and to end when the teeming of the ingots is completed. INGOT STRUCTLIRES A survey of the relative advantages and disadvantages of different types of ingot structure is required because deoxidation treatments during the finishing period control the amount of gas evolved during solidification and consequently determine the type of ingot structure. Four classes of ingots are recognized, de- pending upon the degree of deoxidation to which the steel has been subjected. These types are killed, semikilled, capped, and rimmed; typical examples of their structures are represented by ingots 1, 2, 5, and 7, respectively, of Fig 9-1. The actual ingots from which these cross sections were sketched were all poured to the same height (indicated by the dotted lines) in the same type and size of bottle-top molds. The eight drawings of the figure represent selected types of ingot structure in a continuous series from "dead killed" to "wild," resulting from variations in the total quantity of gas evolved, from none at all to copious amounts, during solidification of the steel in the mold. Killed and semikilled steels are adjacent at the "quiescent" end of the ingot structure series where only small amounts of gas are evolved. The term "quiescent" describes the action of the molten metal during and subsequent to the teeming of killed and semikilled steels. Capped and rimmed steels are adjacent at the

During the course of an investigation into the drawability of automobile-body sheet steel, it became apparent that certain advantages would be possessed by a deep-drawing steel with a very low yield strength, but almost normal tensile strength, provided a reduction in yield strength could be accomplished without sacrifice of ductility and fine grain size. It would also be desirable to have this steel free from strainaging; that is, free from the tendency for the yield point to return after it had been eliminated by straining. It was known that wet hydrogen treatment acted to eliminate aging, but as carried out by other investigators, at relatively high temperatures, this treatment resulted in grain coarsening. It has been established by some of the experiments reported in this paper that all of these objectives can be accomplished by treatment in wet hydrogen at a low temperature, in the neighborhood of 720°C. The time of treatment is relatively short (about 3 hr. to completion with 20-gauge sheet) if the water content of the hydrogen atmosphere is made fairly high, say almost 30 per cent by volume. At this temperature, the grain size remains fine in the time required. After this treatment sheet reduced the usual amount by cold-rolling has a grain size of about A.S.T.M. No. 7. The yield point is completely eliminated, and the yield strength is reduced to a very low value, in the neighborhood of 15,000 lb. per sq. in. The stress-strain curve departs gradually from the straight-line elastic part after the fashion of nonferrous deep-drawing alloys. This elimination of the yield point is accompanied by a very low indentation hardness; for example, 32 Rockwell B or even lower. There is no aging as measured by increase in the yield strength upon aging at room temperature or for 3 hr. at 200°C., after stretching about 10 per cent in tension. Tensile strength is only slightly less than the box-annealed sheet, seldom dropping much below 40,000 lb. per sq. in. Elongation is practically unchanged, or increased slightly. The term yield point, as here used, refers to the phenomenon of heterogeneous deformation occurring at a substantially constant load, observed principally in annealed low-carbon steels. If such a steel is loaded in tension, the load increases steadily with elastic strain, suddenly falls, fluctuates slightly about some constant value for a time and then begins to rise again as deformation proceeds. THE chance that a Howe Memorial Lecturer will be able to refer back to a personal contact with the distinguished metallurgist for whom this lectureship is named grows steadily smaller. I did not have the pleasure of his personal acquaintance, but I did receive from him in 1916, quite unexpectedly, a letter commenting on a paper that I had recently published27 on "Types of Prismatic Structure in Igneous Rocks." The paper was written for geologists and petrologists, but it had an application, naturally, to the crystallization of iron and steel in a mold. The letter impressed me at the time, and still does, with the breadth of Professor Howe's interests and his perseverance in keeping up with the progress of any branch of knowledge that had metallurgical connotations. SCOPE OF THE LECTURE During several years preceding the date mentioned I had worked in collaboration with Arthur L. Day and E. T. Allen8 at the Geophysical Laboratory, Carnegie Institution of Washington, on the temperature scale as defined by the nitrogen thermometer at high temperatures. Later (1928-1947) I had the opportunity of helping to apply this experience to the pyrometric problems of the steel industry. Because of the range of its temperatures, the multiplicity of the methods used, and the variety of its purposes, pyrometry in the open-hearth process has always offered a fertile field for both research and development. I am therefore devoting an hour to the subject of temperatures in the basic open-hearth furnace, the furnace that makes most of our steel in the United States. I would direct your attention particularly to the choice of the first two words in the title of the Lecture. One sometimes hears or reads of the "temperature of such-and-such a furnace," as if it were a single, measurable, characteristic quantity. I need hardly emphasize to any one who has ever operated a furnace or a kiln that "temperature of the furnace" is a meaningless phrase. Even if we confine our attention to the space enclosed by the roof, walls, and hearth of an open-hearth furnace, it is doubtful whether any such space has ever been so uniform in temperature that the phrase would have a meaning. In any furnace, there are many different temperatures, capable of being measured at many different places, and actually being measured for several different purposes. These pyrometric purposes, methods, and results, if given in detail, would expand this lecture into a book on the basic open-hearth process. I must therefore confine myself to a statement of the range of temperatures as they have been observed in various parts of the furnace, indicating in a general way why they are measured, and mentioning the methods that are available without attempting to describe these

SINCE the outbreak of the European war, few problems of raw-material supply have commanded more nation-wide attention than potash. It is well known that before the war the domestic production of potash was an insignificant percentage of the imports. The average annual importation of raw potash salts for several years prior to 1914 was slightly over 300,000 net tons, and f other potash manure salts about 700,0000 tons. The sudden and almost total cessation f these imports created a unique and stringent situation. Methods of recovering potash from feldspar and other native mineral sources, and reclamation from hitherto waste products, have received a marked impetus. Soaring prices have been a keen-incentive to research and industrial development. Although several brief articles concerning the possibilities of potash recovery have appeared in recent trade journals, it still may be a matter of some surprise to the average technical mind that potash might be reclaimed as a profitable byproduct in the manufacture of pig iron. At the present time it may be of special interest to present some data, largely of a technical nature, on this subject. A fairly thorough search of the literature reveals a number of articles concerning salts of the alkali metals in the blast furnace. Many of them deal with the-theoretical role f alkali cyanides in the furnace. Several discuss the, probable effect of the alkalies on the furnace brickwork. Two or three ambitious patents have been granted for reclaiming potash or other products from blast-furnace gas. However, we have heard nothing further as to the practical application of these patents. Little literature of importance has appeared during the last 10 years concerning alkalies in blast-furnace practice, and I have discovered no record whatsoever as to the actual sale or commercial disposal f flue dust for its , potash content until this was inaugurated in our plant at Bethlehem. A bibliography of the most important articles discovered is appended.

The standard free energies of formation of the lowest stable sulfides of chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten in equilibrium with the corresponding metal hazle been determined by reacting the sulfide and metal with H2(g)/H2S(g) mixtures. The reaction is A method for estimating the standard ~nolav entropies and standard entropies of formation at 298°K of the sul-fides of refractory metals is presented. The standard free energies of formation of the lowest sulfides of the metals in group VIa of the periodic table are probably best determined with the reaction* is known with greater accuracy than is that property for any other sulfur-bearing compound or solution which might serve as a reference phase to establish the chemical potential of sulfur for the essential re- However, there still remain significant problems to the use of Reaction [I] in studying these sulfides. First, the equilibrium gas ratios (Ph2S/PH2) are very small, and with the most stable sulfides in the series the ratios tend to be at the limit of the range for precise chemical analysis (10-4); and second, the reaction rate for the formation or reduction of these sulfides appears to be relatively slow. A primary reason for the latter problem is that the gas phase near the equilibrium concentration has very little capacity for transport of sulfur. It is to be noted that the thermo-dynamic properties obtained from the experimental results by Eq. [I] apply for 1 g-atom of sulfur in the metal-saturated compound even though the exact composition of the compound has not been determined. The work reported here is a study of the standard free energies of formation of the lowest sulfides of chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten, and of copper, by Reaction [I]. In planning the experimental program, it was decided that the technique that has been used previously3"' could be used with modification and that an improved analytical method was needed for determining H2S in the gas phase. Throughout the history of mankind, the principal use of coal has been to produce heat through combustion. The heat is used in many ways: to warm air space for our comfort; to provide heat or energy to power industrial processes, such as cement and steel production ; and to produce electricity. Because it is our nation's most abundant fossil energy fuel, coal in the late 20th century is on the threshold of becoming a significant source for synthetic liquids and gas energy fuels for this country. This is made possible by conversion processes which can change solid coal into various synthetic gases and liquids. These coal-derived fuels are nearly identical to the processed fuels and chemicals provided by natural gas and crude oils, which presently provide almost all the petrochemical feedstocks and energy fuels needed for the residential, light commercial, and transportation markets. A revolution is beginning to take place, not only in the United States, but in many other countries with a return to a coal-based energy economy. Also, new combustion and conversion technologies which are compatible with national health and environmental goals are rapidly emerging. These technologies will allow coal's use to be expanded not only in its traditional markets, but also to supply markets held by natural gas and crude oil. With the worldwide decline in natural gas and crude oil reserves, coal is being looked upon to meet the energy demand. Because of these new coal conversion technologies, coal will no longer be only a combustion fuel, but a valuable raw material for production of a variety of clean fuels and chemicals. A GREAT landslide occurred on June 23, 1925, in the valley of Gros Ventre River, about 35 miles south of Yellowstone National Park (Fig. 1). The relations of the north-easterly dipping rock formations of the slide scarp and of the dam formed by the slide are shown in the diagrammatic cross-section of the valley (Fig. 2). This generalized section is based on unpublished maps and notes by Eliot Blackwelder, in the files of the U. S. Geological Survey. The object of this paper is to discuss the fundamental principles of ball milling and to present some observations which have been made in laboratory and plant investigations. The discussion will be limited to wet grinding of ores in cylindrical mills, but doubtless many of the principles involved will be equally applicable in the other fields of fine grinding in which mills of the same type are used. In the concentrators of the United States there are about 650 ball, rod, or pebble mills, operating or ready to operate, and these have about 100,000 connected horsepower. For grinding in cement plants there is about three times this connected horsepower, and other industries have an unestimated amount, all used for the general type of grinding that is to be discussed here. It is true that these figures do not represent stupendous amounts of power, but when one considers that ball milling is often the ((bottle neck" in a concentrator and that it often accounts for the largest single item in the cost sheet, the importance of a comprehensive understanding of the principles of ball milling can be appreciated. Much of the past literature devoted to the subject has been concerned with the Kick-Rittinger dispute over evaluating grinding, or with dissertations on ball paths and the closely allied impact versus attrition hypotheses, or with the exclusive consideration of certain specific variables, such as mill speed or circulating load, irrespective of the other factors in operation. Such subjects may be dismissed with but little discussion in what may be called, by comparison, a new philosophy in the study of ball milling. Briefly, this '(new philosophy" consists of using power as an index of the mill operation, and investigating grinding from the standpoint of set and induced varisbles, with emphasis on the latter.

THE subject of transverse fissures in steel rails has been discussed very thoroughly in recent years from various points of view and the final opinions expressed may be roughly classified into two groups: (1) That these fissures are the result merely of fatigue of the steel and are independent of the quality of the metal. (2) That the quality of the metal and the mill practice must have something to do with them. The first point of view was most-ably and logically presented by J. E. Howard,1 and in the discussion of this paper, as well as in several other preceding publications, Dr. P. H. Dudley, Consulting Engineer of the New York Central Lines, has strongly defended the other opinion.2 The steel makers of the country have naturally rallied under Mr. Howard's banner, hoping to place the entire blame for these. failures upon the railroads with their high wheel-loads, hard steel, heavy traffic, and sometimes inferior roach-bed; while the railroad men,, on the other hand, have been busy accumulating statistics and records in the effort to find an actual reason in the rails themselves that would account for the seemingly haphazard occurrence of transverse fissures under varying conditions and at widely separated points. The view that these fissures were due merely to normal fatigue under alternating stresses seemed most reasonable to the writer until quite recently, because from work clone in this laboratory, as well as the work of other investigators of the problem, no structural differences, in the vast majority of cases, were found between metal at the nuclei of transverse fissures and metal at similar positions in the same rails or in other rails that had not developed fissures. . ALTHOUGH the mechanical cleaning of coal is carried out at plants on the surface, preparation is actually begun at the face in the mine. Here the character of the coal and the amount, character, and distribution of the impurities within the bed may be seen. Blasting methods, dust-allaying procedures, location of mining cut with respect to bands of impurity, and the practice of discarding segregated impurities underground, all have an important bearing on the successful operation of surface cleaning units. The most important single characteristic of both coal and its asso¬ciated impurities from the standpoint of cleaning is specific gravity. Other characteristics related in one way or another to the preparation of coal are rank, petrographic composition, structure and hardness, and friability. These and still other coal properties are discussed in the first section of this chapter and impurity characteristics in the second. COAL CHARACTERISTICS RELATED TO PREPARATION Rank As a result of work done over a period of several years by committees of the American Society for Testing Materials and the American Standards Association, standard specifications are now available showing the classification of coals according to rank and quality of grade.' The term "rank" expresses the degree to which the original coal-forming material has been changed by metamorphism through successive stages from peat to anthracite. Coals, other than anthracite, have been so thoroughly studied under the microscope during recent years, that we now know what kinds of plants and what parts of plants form the bulk of lower rank coals from peat to bituminous coal. The microscope has also shown the state of preservation of such vegetation as well as the nature and distribution of products of plant decay. These and further details have been ascertained mainly through the employment of two methods of attack, section cutting and maceration. Anthracite has failed to respond to these methods, so well adapted to the study of lower rank coals and, therefore, has been neglected by investigators to such an extent that there is much doubt as to its microscopical characteristics. The object of this paper is to lift anthracite from its realm of obscurity by demonstrating the wealth of microscopical detail that is revealed when reflected light is used on a properly polished and etched surface and, further, to show the relationship between anthracite and bituminous coal. Technique The method adopted in this investigation is similar to that described in an earlier paper.' Because of slight modifications recently made, the process is again described. It consists, briefly, of etching a polished surface of coal with heat. Although pieces of various sizes and shapes are used, blocks of coal about 2 or 3 cm. square take the most uniform polish and are large enough to be handled with ease. Larger pieces can be used if one has the equipment for polishing them and they rnay be desirable when one wishes to study some particular form that extends for some distance through the coal. Large surfaces, however, require greater care in polishing and etching; for this reason, they are not recommended for ordinary work.

The Tri-State zinc and lead-mining district is in the northeast corner of Oklahoma, the southeast corner of Kansas and the southwest corner of Missouri. The area throughout which active mining has been conducted is about 45 miles long and about 5 miles wide, extending northeasterly from Commerce, Okla., to Alba, Missouri. Although the lead ores were mined on a very small scale in the vicinity of Joplin, Mo., as early as 1848, nothing of any importance was done in the district until 1870, since when both mining and smelting have been prosecuted with considerable vigor. In the beginning the lead ores only were exploited, but within a few years extensive deposits of zinc ores were found and since that time the production of zinc ore has far exceeded that of lead. Both the surface and mineral rights in Missouri and Kansas were under individual ownership by the time ore was discovered. Although some of these rights were purchased by mining companies, most of the mining has been done under leases covering small areas, usually 40 acres, although in the past many leases were given on much smaller tracts. In Oklahoma most of the mineral land had been alloted by the Government to various Indian tribes and although the title to some of these lands had been acquired by various white men before the discovery of the rich Picher field, the title to most of the land has remained with the Indian tribes and the leasing of the mineral rights has been done by the Federal Government for the benefit of the Indians. The Indian allotments were of 200 acres each and some of the mining leases covered entire allotments, although many leases were granted for only 40 acres or even less. Practically all of the leases granted in the past required the erection of a concentrating plant on each lease, a condition that has had a pronounced effect upon the mining and milling methods of the district, since the apparent ore reserves on each tract were too small to justify large and elaborate mining and milling plants.
