As. part of a program of investigation of the properties of electric arc welds carried out in the laboratories of the A. 0. Smith Corporation, considerable work has been done on the determination of the oxygen, nitrogen and hydrogen content of different types of weld metal, employing for this purpose the so-called "vacuum fusion method." It is the purpose of this paper to describe certain improvements that have been introduced in this method of determining the gas content of metals, with particular references to the steel specimens examined in this investigation. The method and apparatus used at the beginning of the investigation were essentially those of the Bureau of Standards as described by Vacher and Jordan.1 Later a number of changes were introduced which resulted in. more rapid evacuation of the graphite crucibles employed and which enabled larger volumes of gas to be dealt with than could be handled conveniently in the Bureau of Standards equipment. In addition, the analyzing of the gases evolved from a melt in the same apparatus as collected was abandoned in favor of analysis outside the equipment using standard methods of gas analysis. The time required for gas analysis in the apparatus itself, as described by the Bureau of Standards, was found to be considerable, and during this time the rest of the equip-ment was tied up, preventing its use for the analysis of further steel sam-ples. As a result of the modifications introduced, the time required for the analysis of a steel sample for gas content was reduced from about 8 hours to less than 3 hours. Subsequently, the whole procedure of melting the sample and collect-ing the gases evolved was modified so as to enable a distinction to be drawn between the easily reducible oxides such as iron oxide and the more stable oxides such as silica and alumina. At the same time evidence was obtained indicating the probable existence in the steels of other nitrides than those of iron alone and making possible their quantitative determination.

The definite trend to stricter specifications with respect to hydraulic concrete has become increasingly manifest in the last six years or so; but it remained for the vast reclamation projects of the Bureau of Reclamation of the Department of the Interior of the last few years to focus attention on this trend, and to demonstrate how thousands of tons of concrete-making aggregates can be produced continuously and automatically with a control of fineness comparable with that obtained with small samples in well equipped private and governmental laboratories. Pioneer work in this direction was done, to be sure, by private companies, notably the Kaiser Paving Co. of San Francisco, prior to the present vast public works program. Then in 1931 came the first great aggregates-preparation plant of the Six Companies, Inc. to supply construction materials for Boulder Darn1 in Nevada, and now, in 1936, the aggregates plant of the Mason-Walsh-Atkinson-Kier Co., general contractors on the Grand Coulee darn in Washington. At Boulder dam and to an even greater degree at Grand Coulee dam, sand production is recognized as probably the most important single element affecting the physical characteristics of the concrete. For in the construction of dams accurate grading of the fine aggregate has considerable bearing on the attainment of a uniform and homogeneous concrete of a high degree of workability and placeability and, at the same time, combining high density and low cement content. Low cement content is of value not only from the standpoint of ceonomy but also because the use of an unnecessarily rich concrete causes certain undesirable characteristics to develop. This paper will relate how at Grand Coulee dam methods that are more advanced than ever before are producing four sizes of gravel and a sand having a fineness modulus of 2.5-3.0. The design capacity is 1000 tons an hour. The Hadfield method of producing sound steel ingots has been the subject of a paper read before the Iron and Steel Institute, so that it will be unnecessary to describe it fully here. The object of the method is to make poseible the production of steel ingots in which the pipe is almost entirely obliterated, and it is applicable particularly to the production of sound ingots, from which good rails could be rolled. The method in brief consists in casting the ingots on cars, usually with the small end down. Each ingot mold is provided with a sand top, rammed up in the well-known manner. After the mold is filled to the desired height with steel, a layer of slag about 0.5 in. thick is placed upon it and the balance of the mold is then filled with charcoal. Then, through suitable piping, an air blast is directed in numerous jets upon the charcoal, which is burned thereby, the combustion supplying addi, tional heat to the top of the ingot, which helps to keep the top fluid and to retard its solidification, while the lower parts are rapidly losing heat by its transfer to the mold. By one plan the ingots are cast in molds placed upon bogies, movable trucks, or platforms, in the position A, Fig. 1. The ingots are cast vertically on bogies, say four or more ingots on each bogie, as may be found most convenient, and the upper surface of the steel is maintained in a molten condition during the transit of the ingots from the casting pit to the stripper. THIS paper describes the results of a series of tests carried out to determine the partition of dodecylamine between distilled water and the surface of quartz at various concentrations of dodecylamine acetate in solution. An adsorption-column technique was utilized for this purpose. Ralston and Harwood, of Armour and Co., had synthesized marked dodecylamine acetate for us.' In their preparation which we employed, 0.0007 pct of the total carbon was the radioactive isotope, carbon fourteen. Unmarked dodecylamine acetate of high purity was also prepared by them for our use. The presence of carbon fourteen in the dodecylamine enabled us to analyze quantitatively for dodecylamine on the surface of quartz, using a radioactive-tracer technique. The method used was that known as internal gas counting of carbon dioxide, formed by oxidation of the amine. This method has already been described, "3 ' and the reader is referred to these papers for details of the analytical method and procedures. and surrounding liquor, a technique analogous to chromatographic columns was utilized. The experimental setup is shown in fig. 1. The dodecylamine-acetate solution was made up in a volumetric flask and poured into the glass funnel shown. It was allowed to drip slowly onto the quartz bed, the rate of flow from the funnel reser- voir being controlled by a hose clamp. The quartz column was contained in a small, fritted-glass filter (size 20 mm, C). The beaded top edge of the filter was cut off to enable the holder and contents to fit into the open end of the 30/45 joint on the combustion tube. This combustion tube is used in the analytical train described in a previous paper.' A piece of gum-rubber tubing joins the bottom of the fritted-glass filter to a filter flask, which in turn is connected to a vacuum line, or water aspirator. THREE years ago it was decided by the management to granulate the matte that is produced in the smelter of the St: Joseph Lead Co. at Herculaneum, Mo., thereby doing away with a large amount of labor in handling the matte and in subsequent crushing. On Mar. 1, 1915, the granulator was put in operation and up to Jan. 1, 1916, 18,735 tons had been, granulated. The four blast furnaces have a daily output of about 280 tons of pig lead and 100 tons of matte assaying about 11.0 per cent. Pb. It is expected that projected improvements in roasting methods will eliminate more sulphur from the charge, and cut down the matte-fall, to about one-half of the present figure. The blast furnaces are tapped into movable forehearths or settlers, 6 ft. by 4 ft. by 22 in., the slag overflowing into 27-cu. ft. slag cars which are hauled to the clump by electric locomotives. Previous to the adoption of granulation, the matte was tapped from the forehearths into small slag pots which were dumped after cooling. The matte cakes were broken with sledges, and transported to the crushing plant for fine crushing and screening. Here the matte was reduced to ¼ -in. size before being fed to the roaster bins.. A Wedge and a Holthoff mechanical furnace are used for preroasting before sintering on the Dwight and Lloyd machines. The matte is returned to the furnaces as an iron flux until the .gradually accumulating copper content reaches about 7 per cent., after which it is put aside to be concentrated in a small copper blast furnace, the resultant high-grade matte-being sold. When the matte does not settle readily from the slag, two settling devices are often used, the second one being a large catch-pot, which gathers any matte that may overflow from the forehearth, the slag then overflowing from the catch-pot into the slag cars. When full of matte, the catch-pot is removed, allowed to cool, and the contents broken and crushed.

INTRODUCTION Laboratory studies on the deformability and strength of intact rocks generally involve the uniaxial compression test, the standard triaxial compression test and direct or indirect tension tests. If [al ,a2 ,a3] are principal stresses [(al>a2>a3)] with compression taken as positive and tension taken as negative, the applied stress field for each one of these tests can be represented as shown in Fig. 1. However, for most in-situ conditions, such as those that exist at any point around an underground excavation, the stress field is truly three-dimensional or multiaxial [(al+ a2+a3)] and none of the tests shown in Fig. 1 can be used to predict the mechanical behavior of the rock. There are special cases for which one of the three principal stresses vanishes. Biaxial loading of rocks in-situ takes place, for instance, when rocks deform and fail in plane stress conditions. This can occur in a free unloaded surface of a rock structure such as in the wall of an underground excavation or a rock slope. Parallel to the free surface, the stress field components can be both compressive [(al>a2>0)], both tensile [(O>a2>a3)], or mixed, one component being compressive and the other one tensile [(U~>O>U~)]. The purpose of this paper is to present the results of 25 true biaxial tests that have been conducted on cubical specimens of Indiana Limestone using the multiaxial cell available at the University of Colorado at Boulder. The tests include uniaxial compression and tension, biaxial compression and combined biaxil compression- tension. Flexible fluid cushions and brush bearing platens were used for compressive and tensile loading respectively in order to minimize loading end effects on the test specimens. This paper was written with two objects in view: (1) To describe in detail what has been done toward the ventilation of the main unit of the Portovelo mines and the results; (2) to give information that may be useful to anyone who may have to make a preliminary mine ventilation survey, with recommendations for the improvement of the existing system and finally the maintenance of the improved system. General Description The mining operations of the South American Development Co. at Portovelo, Province of El oro, Ecuador, are described here only briefly, as a full discussion does not fall within the scope of this paper. The orebodies are of the steeply dipping, gold quartz vein type, averaging about 2.0 meters wide. As shown in Fig. 1, the ore chutes are relatively far apart, making considerable development work necessary before connecting raises can be driven between the levels. Faulting' on a large scale and a parallel vein system have made long dead-end drifts and many crosscuts necessary in the exploration of veins. The ventilation of these dead ends is described under Auxiliary Ventilation. The method of mining2 is the filled rill stope method, similar to the method that is largely employed at the Butte mines. The main shaft of the mine is in the Amarillo Valley, on either side of which mountains rise abruptly to a height of several hundred feet above the collar of the shaft. Entrance is made to the mine: (1) Through the American shaft, which extends vertically from the surface to a depth of 1100 ft., of which only the first 700 ft. are in active use at the present time; (2) levels are driven from the American shaft at intervals of 30 m. (100 ft.), of which only the third, fifth and seventh levels need be considered in the ventilation problem; (3) adits at intervals of 30 m. (100 ft.), with a few exceptions, above the collar of the American shaft.

Shortly after our previous paper on this subject was printed1 we located a source of uncertainty in the results arising from the unexpected fact that hydrogen slowly reduces silica at 1100" C. in presence of iron, even when the iron nowhere touches the silica, although in absence of iron it does not do so. This difficulty has been completely obviated by the use of a small high-frequency furnace, which enables us to heat the specimen for analysis without raising the temperature of the silica vessel to a point at which any appreciable reduction of the silica glass occurs. We now describe this modification of procedure, and present some typical results obtained with it. For any given specimen of steel, the results are entirely definite and reproducible, but their precise significance is still open to some question, as indeed is true of all methods of oxygen determination SO far developed. Further elucidation of this question is to be expected from the cooperative comparison of the several methods now under way under the auspices of the Bureau of Standards at the instance of the Iron and Steel Division of the A.I.M.E. Apparatus The final form of apparatus we have used is identical with that described and illustrated in our previous paper, except for the substitution for the Globar furnace of a small high-frequency furnace actuated by a vacuum tube oscillator2 0f about 1.5 kw. capacity, and for a slight modification of the containing vessel. This transparent silica vessel is illustrated in Fig. 1 of this paper. Its enlarged portion is about 5 cm. in diameter and 13 cm. long. The silica tube for inlet of hydrogen is fused into this bulb and ends beneath the metal "bucket" holding the steel sample. This sample is in the form of fine millings. The investigation of the hot-working properties of metals and alloys furnishes a problem which has been attacked in many ways. Tensile, impact and hardness tests on heated specimens have furnished interesting data, but in most cases either the tests are difficult to make or the results hard to translate into terms of practical value. Some investigators have used the drop hammer to advantage. It furnishes a rapid and simple method of comparing the plasticity of metals at elevated temperatures. The indications obtained by its use are of value only in so far as their significance is understood and they can be intelligently used to predict the behavior of a given metal under given hot-working conditions. The work reported here was undertaken not only to add something to the existing volume of such data but also to contribute to our understanding of the results. Doerinckel and Trockels1 used cylindrical specimens and determined the work required to reduce the specimen to one-half the original height. Ellis2 studied the effect of constitution on the malleability of steel at high temperature. His method and that of Kent3 were similar to the one used in the present work. The tests described by Kent were made on samples of tin, zinc, aluminum, copper, lead, 70:30 and 60:40 brasses, with and without a small quantity of lead. He concluded that the test would "indicate whether a material can be forged at a given temperature without cracking." This interpretation must be used with caution. While it is probably true within limits, one must consider the severity of the forging operation. Again, it will not apply strictly to forms of hot working other than forging. For instance, an alloy running 61.0 per cent. copper, 3.25 per cent. lead, remainder zinc, will crack badly in the test, yet, it is extruded commercially. When the possibility of hot-working a new alloy is being considered a study of its drop-hammer test should help

OgdEN et al.1 and Bumps et al.2 suggested that the solubility of aluminum in a titanium extended to 30 pct.* Sagcl,3 Clark and Terry,4 Anderko et al.,5 Ence and Margolin6 and Saulnier and croutzelles,7 subsequently proposed the existence of an intermetallic compound in the region of 25 pct Al. Although Anderko et al.5 suggested that the structure of this phase, Ti3Al, was of the DO,, (Ni3Sn) type, their conclusion was based only upon the results of a powder photograph that included reflections from ? = 0 to ?= 27° (CuK),some of which were reported to be indistinct. Ence and Margolin,6 referring to a 25 pct alloy (but without indicating whether the figure referred to weight or atomic pct) stated: "The structure of Ti2Al is isomorphous with Ti3Sn DO19, as pointed out by Pietrokowsky". But the point was not proven, because Ence and Margolin did not report values of calculated intensities of Ti2Al with the DO,, structure. In fact, the observed intensities they reported are in poor agreement with the values we calculate for DO19 (see Table I). Saulnier and croutzelle7 concluded, on the basis of electron micrography and microdiffraction studies, that the structure of the 25 pct A1 alloy was ordered hexagonal. Our purpose has been to unequivocally determine the Ti3Al structure. Alloys containing 25 pct Al were prepared from iodide titanium and spectrographic standard aluminum by levitation melting. The levitation chamber was evacuated to 10-6 mm Hg before filling with 99.999 + pct A. After casting, the alloy was chilled to liquid air temperature and crushed to -200 mesh in a percussion mortar. The powder, wrapped in molybdenum foil, was annealed (by induction heating) at 1000 "C for 2 hr in the argon atmosphere of the levitation chamber. No sublimate was seen on the foil or elsewhere, and therefore the assumption is

When brasses containing from 61 to 62.5 per cent. copper are very rapidly cooled from temperatures near their melting point to below 0" C., unusual results are obtained. These results are quite unexplainable from a consideration of the old copper-zinc constitutional diagram but they can be satisfactorily explained by means of the diagram revised by Genders and Bailey1 (Fig. 1). Experiments on a 60/40 Brass If an alloy containing 60 per cent. copper is heated to any temperature between approximately 760' C. and its melting point, it will consist entirely of beta. Upon slowly cooling, alpha will start to separate just below 760" C. Since this alpha will contain nearly 65 per cent, copper, the beta will be impoverished by its separation. As the temperature decreases the composition of the separating alpha will approach approximately 61 per cent. and the beta in contact with the alpha will maintain an equilibrium composition approaching 54.5 per cent. copper. If the rate of cooling is extremely slow, especially at the lower temperatures, stable equilibrium will be established by diffusion through the alpha and beta so that eventually 85 per cent. of the alloy will consist of alpha containing 61 per cent. copper, while 15 per cent. will be beta containing 54.5 per cent. copper. With a faster cooling rate diffusion cannot keep apace and the constituents will be cored, the alpha varying from 65 to 61 per cent. copper and the beta from 60 to 54.5 copper. In this case the amount of alpha will be less than 85 per cent. and the beta will be increased correspondingly. The general structure thus obtained is illustrated in Fig. 2. When a more rapid rate of cooling is effected by quenching in water, the alloy is retained largely in the beta form. However, the crystals of beta are usually outlined with dark fringes which at high magnifications are found to be very fine alpha-beta structures almost martensitic in appearance. Oil-well depletion curves, to be of value, should show when a well or lease may no longer be operated at a profit. The difference, at any time, between the total expenditures and the total income of a lease or well may be called the lease status. Plotting this lease status against time will give a curve subject to more accurate and different interpretations than the barrels-time curves. According to the hypothetical barrels-time curves shown in Fig. 1, well A, at the end of 16 mo., is producing twice as much oil as well B and will continue to produce for another year whereas well B will cease producing in about 6 months. Production of crude in 1937 decreased (Tables 1 and 5) by about 2 per cent, while gas production for that period increased by about 6 per cent after a slight decrease in 1936 (0.4 per cent).' As in preceding years, drilling operations were confined principally to extensions of old oil fields in the Jaslo district (fields 1 and 7) and to some extent to such extensions in the Stanislawbw district (field 27). Deepening of old wells to horizons reached more recently by new wells gave on the average better results per well than those attained by new wells (Table 3). Reserves of proved lands have increased some by new oil fields discovered, Targowiska (field 8) and Czarna (field 19) both of which, however, have only small production. The Daszawa gas field (field 25) has not been extended, but two new gas fields were located instead— Opary, distant 25 km. (151/2 miles) northwest of Daszawa, Balicze at 12 km. (7 1/4 miles) southeast of Daszawa, and Kalusz (TESP Company exploiting potassium salts) in the vicinity of the town of that name (field 33). Drilling upon the gas area near Tarnbw and Debica, while gas-bearing sandstone had been found at depths of from 300 to 512 meters (984 to 1680 ft.) (Zdziary No. 2) and at 220 m. (722 ft.) Tunneling is at the threshold of a new era. An exciting new technology is becoming available. And, supplying the increasing quantities of minerals required by a growing and socially advancing world population, together with providing the subsurface facilities attendant to the rapid urbanization of the more developed countries of the world, will require underground excavation during the next decades on a scale that would have seemed fantastic a few years ago. It is estimated that world mineral consumption will increase fivefold by the year 2000. Projections for the United States indicate that domestic consumption of nonfuel minerals may increase two to three times by the end of the century. Meeting these requirements will entail opening up many new underground mines, even if present trends toward surface mining continue. And, at least in the United States, new factors that are becoming increasingly important may modify these trends. We are depleting our shallow easy- to-find and easy-to-mine mineral deposits; and, if we are to avoid becoming dangerously dependent on imports, we must turn more and more toward deeper deposits that are not amenable to surface mining. Growing public concern with environmental quality is apparently leading toward increasingly stringent regulation of surface mining which also will tend to make underground mining economically more attractive. The world market for underground construction is also growing rapidly. The most conservative projections indicate that in the United States alone more than $7.0 billion will be spent on excavation for underground facilities during the next ten years. And these estimates do not include any of the bold, imaginative new applications for underground excavation that have been proposed, such as extensive underground power transmission, the Chicago Deep Tunnel plan, and the Northeast Corridor Transportation project. There can be little doubt then that the market for tunnels for conventional applications is increasing rapidly and that the trend will continue. It

The number of seismograph field crews employed in the active survey of potential oil territories is still on the increase, owing to the ever pending threat of a shortage in the supply of crude oil. It is to be expected that for years to come the seismograph will be responsible for discovering many new oil fields, both in wildcat territories and in deeper formations, and that the seismographic campaign will go on unabated. Yet improvements in instrumental design, in the field and interpretative techniques, are brought about year after year, and lead to the reshooting of areas many times surveyed previously. Notwithstanding the experience gained by the past eight years of active work in reflection seismographic surveys, the results given by this method of mapping deep formations have in many instances been at variance with the information subsequently obtained by the drill. To overcome this shortcoming, geophysicists have used closer spacing of the shot points and closer control of the depth points. The method discussed here is being used actively in the Mid-Continent region and endeavors to reduce the interpretation work to a mere mechanical technique, leaving as little as possible to the opinion of the interpreter. The New Method Field Technique.—In sectionized territory where country roads are available every mile, shot points are preferably located every 1/4 mile when six detectors are available or every % mile when eight detectors are at hand. The disposition of individual spreads is represented on Fig. I; in each case a shot point is located at the section corners. Fig. 2a represents the layout of a spread between shot points, the vibration detectors being preferably equidistantly located. The constitution of the iron-silicon alloys containing from 14 to 33.4 weight per cent silicon has been studied by a number of investigators, whose results have been reviewed in a monograph published by the Engineering Foundation1. In these previous researches, the solubility of silicon in iron was determined by thermal, microscopic or magnetic methods and the compound Fe3Si2 was reported to be stable at temperatures from 0 to approximately 1030' C. This paper describes the results of an X-ray investigation of the solubility of silicon in iron and gives data which prove that the Fe3Si2 phase is unstable below 825" C. In order to obtain the present results on the solubility of silicon in iron, the authors have utilized the lattice constants of the alpha-phase iron-silicon alloys given in a previous publication2, and also some additional data which will subsequently be described. Materials and Methods The alloys used in this investigation are listed in Table 1. They were prepared in 30 or 50-gram ingots by melting specially purified silicon and electrolytic or carbonyl iron in alundum crucibles under a pressure of less than 1 mm. of mercury. The purity of the silicon, electrolytic and carbonyl irons has been given by the authors in previous publications2, 5. The ingots were homogenized in vacuo at approximately 1000" C. for at least 96 hr. and then slowly cooled. The homogenized specimens were ground to powder in a hardened steel mortar. This powder was passed through a 150 or 200-mesh screen and sealed in evacuated quartz, Jena or Pyrex glass tubes and heat-treated as noted in the various tables. Specimens 23A, 24B, 33 and 35 and the specimens heated for one month at 700" C. were quenched by quickly removing the tubes from a horizontal tubular furnace and dropping them into water. The other specimens were quenched by means of a drop-quenching device, which has been described previously3.
