In order to clarify and amplify the existing data concerning the action of the cementing material in cemented tungsten carbide alloys, the authors have initiated this investigation of the entire range of cobalt-tungsten carbide alloys. Inasmuch as the ultimate objective is relative to what actually goes on during the sintering of cemented tungsten carbide materials, this work was necessarily restricted to heat treatments similar to those used in actual production of these materials. In the course of numerous experiments, the authors have noted several conditions that indicated that there was a solubility to be considered. Among these factors are the following: 1. Many of the alloys showed a much larger amount of binding constituent to be present than could possibly be accounted for by the cobalt content. 2. In many areas, grains of the carbide constituent are much larger than the particles of carbide originally added. In addition, these grains are of very regular contour. 2a. In samples of cemented tungsten carbide which had been fused in the atomic hydrogen torch in the presence of excess binder constituent, immense grains are formed, and their shapes are very regular. This is also true when the cemented tungsten carbide of 13 per cent. Co content is fused alone in the atomic hydrogen torch. Contrary to general expectation, chemical analysis of this material, after fusion in the atomic hydrogen torch, checks the analysis of unfused material. 3. In making the cemented tungsten carbide materials by the process of exerting the pressure at the time of heating a certain portion of the ' contents squeezed out of the mold. Chemical analysis has shown that this material contains approximately 12 to 20 per cent. of tungsten. The microstructure shows a cored dendritic structure interlaced with eutectic network, and some graphite, as shown in Fig. 1. 4. Thermal analysis of these materials has consistently indicated an arrest point close to 1350" C.

The result of this work and of the researches of mineralogists and physical chemists into the chemistry of oxide systems is a considerable body of literature dealing not only with slags themselves but with equilibrium relationships in systems synthesized from pure components. Since any actual slag is a multicom-ponent system more complex than any yet worked out in the laboratory, a complete solution to the problem is still far away. The writers have recently published a paper1 which they believe sheds light on the role of the slag in the elimination of phosphorus and it is the purpose of the present paper to discuss the metallurgical applications of that work. Since the pioneer investigations on the constitution of basic slags carried on by Stead and Risdale, Carnot and Richards, Hilgenstock and others in the I88o's, a considerable body of literature on this subject has appeared. Many of the more important of these papers were summarized in the previous paper,l therefore they will not be reviewed here. PetRographic Study The present writers have had occasion, over a period of years, to examine petro-graphically a great number of basic steel-making slags having a very wide range of chemical compositions and made under various conditions of operating practice. Although certain of these slags exhibit some unusual features, it is a remarkable fact that the great majority of mature slags show certain typical characteristics, which persist throughout the wide range of chemical compositions. The typical mature slag usually appears under the microscope to consist of two phases. The phase of primary crystallization is light colored and doubly refracting. If separated mechanically and subjected to chemical analysis, it is found to consist essentially of SiO2, CaO, and P2O6. Sometimes, although not usually, two such silicate-phosphate phases are found. The other conspicuous phase is dark in color and optically isotropic, and occurs as the interstitial material between the grains of the light colored phase. This dark colored interstitial phase when analyzed is found to consist essentially of FeO, Fe2O3, MnO, and MgO. In some 'lags high in iron oxide, particularly those from low-carbon heats, dicalcium ferrite is found. This phase is dark reddish brown in color and anisotropic.

An experimental investigation of sovlze low .melting point alloys sJtows that a substvucture of isolated depressions can be the first manvestation of constitutional supercooling on solid-liquid interjaces veuealed by decanting. In contrast, the pox structuve, a set of projections often veported in the literature, leaves no trace oj. segvegation. These obserl;atims, accovlrpanied by a brief review of recent literature, point to inconsistencies between experirrental obsevvation and the idea that the fornzation of a projection is a causal step in the development of a cellular substructure. An argument is presented to show instead how it is plausible for substantial depvessiom to form in the pvesence of constitutional supercooling at dislocations threading the solid-liquid interjace. THE development of constitutional supercooling during growth from the melt leads to the formation of the cellular solidification substructure. This well-founded association between structure and instability has been basic in understanding cellular substructure and micro segregation; however, the initial formation of structure seems unclear. Rutter and Chalmers,&apos; in definitive experiments and theory, noted that in the presence of constitutional a planar interface might break down: "resulting in the formation of a small projection on an initially plane or uniformly curved interface." That is, the breakdown from a planar to a cellular interface was implied to be initiated via a projection into the unstable liquid. Later, Walton et (11. found that a structure of isolated projections, termed "pox", appeared at solid-liquid interfaces decanted under growth conditions near the onset of constitutional supercooling; the pox were taken as the indication of the instability promoted by the supercooling. Tiller and Rutter4 in their extensive work studied the shape transitions at decanted interfaces which were generally observed to proceed as— pox, "irregular cells", elongated cells, regular (hexagonal) cells, and so forth. The pox varied in size from lo-&apos; to 1CT4 cm, and tended to disappear as cells increased in number and regularity, but as noted,4 the first real array of cells did not seem to be a development from the pox. In fact these authors implied a lack of connection because they stated that the pox are denser on "irregular cells", and as cell boundaries increase in number (i.e., the cells become smaller) there is less need for the pox which do dis- appear. Thereafter, most authors dealing with either experiment or theory have accepted the reality of pox and have used them as a criterion for the onset of constitutional supercooling. In contrast, Spittle, Hunt, and smiths have now suggested that pox are irrelevant artifacts comprised of such things as entrapped oxide. This proposal invokes the observations of weinberg6 and chadwick7 each of whom have shown that the act of decanting leaves a residual liquid on a decanted interface; the remnant solid layer of the order 10 p may thus contain particles that might have been transported from the external surfaces, or elsewhere, during decanting. With the incentive of this suggestion,= some further experiments and a reexamination of the literature have been conducted, in order to question the validity of pox as evidence of an instability and to examine the initial development of the cellular substructure. 1) EXPERIMENTS Single crystals of zone-refined tin (-99.9999 pct) were grown from the melt in a controlled fashion with various, small concentration additions of lead and antimony, for which ko < 1 and > 1, respectively. The crystals were decanted at conditions near the onset of constitutional supercooling and were thus appropriate for observation of slight perturbations. It was possible to observe two types of small departure from smooth or "planar" interfaces in both cases of lead or antimony additions. Some were projections and others, if in regular array of any type, were depressions. The crystals were etched with suitable reagents progressively dissolving the decanted interface surface; projections left no record, but depressions were continuously associated with spotlike areas contrasting with the rest of the interface. Traverses were made with the beam of an electron microprobe across the regions of contrast; with lead addition the persistent spots were lead-rich, and with antimony addition the persistent spots were antimony-poor. This is consistent only with a dominant role for depressions, because if the projections had left spots but were incorrectly catalogued, a reversed observation should have been made; that is, the Pb(ko < 1) should have been depleted and the Sb(ko > 1) enriched. In the work of Cole and inegard, and elewhere, regular arrays of structure associated with the initial stage of instability have been shown, in photographs and represented as pox or projections. We believe this to be erroneous, by inference, since whenever a regular array was observed, in the present examination, it consisted of depressions, regardless of the nature of the solute, ko 1. Fig. 1 is reproduced8 as an ideal example of the possible optical illusion involved; the observer can satisfy himself from the distribution of illuminated areas that the markings are depressions. In order to determine the usefulness of geochemical and biogeochemical prospecting for nickel, ten localities representing several types of nickel occurrences were selected as sites from which to collect plant and soil samples. This report covers the investigations in two of the areas. After a brief geologic description of the areas, the author presents details of the experimental tests and resulting data. Conclusions drawn from the studies led to several general guides for further prospecting. In a study of the usefulness of geochemical and biogeochemical prospecting for nickel made about three years ago, approximately ten localities, representing several different types of nickel occurrences, were sampled and about 1500 samples of plant and soil were collected. This report will cover briefly the data and results for two areas, and a summary of guides for prospecting. DESCRIPTION OF AREAS SAMPLED One locality is the Red Flats nickel prospect in Curry County, Ore., about six miles southeast of Goldbeach, and the other is the Little Rocky Creek prospect in Stillwater County, southcentral Montana, just southeast of the Benbow chromite mine. The Oregon area is a lateritic-type nickel deposit formed on a nickel-rich serpentinite peridotite complex, similar to the Josephine intrusion in southwestern Oregon. The Montana area is a nickel prospect in norite, peridotite, and related rocks of the Stillwater igneous complex. The Stillwater complex is a series of layered basic and ultrabasic rocks, with a layer of norite-gabbro at the base and a series of peridotites and gabbros above. The nickel in the Oregon deposit occurs in both the peridotite and the overlying soil. A deep lateritic soil is developed locally on the peridotite and serpentinite and constitutes the ore. The average nickel content of the lateritic soil is less than 1 pct, whereas the nickel content of the weathered peridotite is about 1 to 1.5 pct. The nickel occurs as garnierite (Mg, Fe, Ni, Mn)3 (OH)4 (SiA1)2O5 in the soil and in the olivine and pyroxene in the peridotite where it probably substitutes for Fe2+ or Mg2+ in the silicate lattices. Nickel is found in three distinct ways in the Still-water rocks: 1) it is in the olivine and pyroxene minerals in norite, harzburgite, etc.; 2) it occurs as widely disseminated grains of pentlandite-pyr-rhotite, which tend to be concentrated in the lower norite band; and 3) it occurs as discrete bodies of pentlandite-pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite which are localized in the norite zone, close to the contact with the underlying rocks. The nickel content of the norite is probably less than 1 pct, and the nickel content of the pods and lenses within the norite is about 1 pct. PROSPECTING APPROACH Although the areas are different geologically, the approach in prospecting them is fundamentally the same. The procedure is twofold: 1) a rapid reconnaissance survey to outline an area of high nickel content, and 2) a more detailed survey to outline zones of possible ore grade within the area of high nickel. The possible ore at Red Flats is concentrated in the lateritic soil, whereas at Little Rocky Creek it is in the sulfide pods. Both types are surrounded by an area of relatively high nickel content. CHEMICAL ANALYSIS Chemical analyses of nickel were made by a di-methylglyoxime colorimetric test, similar to the standard test for nickel, utilizing concentrated sul-furic acid for extraction. The lower limit of detection for nickel in soil by the method used was about 10 ppm and for nickel in plants about 5 ppm. The relative deviation was about 25 pct. SOIL PROSPECTING General Statements: A summary of the approximate average parts per million of nickel in soil, as compiled from the literature and from my study, is given in Table I. Selected references are given at the end of the paper. Few of the investigators reported the type of extraction or analysis, so the data given may not be strictly comparable to mine, which were made with a sulfuric acid extraction. Any nickel concentration greater than these average values might be considered anomalous, although each area must be studied in relation to the surrounding rocks. Method of Soil Sampling: The soil samples were taken in a zone from 1 in. to 1 ft below the humus layer, and within a 15-ft radius around a station.

The rate has been studied of the hydrogen reduction of nickel ions in acetate -buffered solutions, using a nickel catalyst. At temperatures between 130°and 160°C, the rate is found to be proportional to the catalyst area, the nickel ion concentration, and the hydrogen pressure. The effect of hydrogen ions is to reduce the observed rate, likely by causing the reverse reaction (dissolution) to proceed. The experimental activation energy was found to be 25 kcal per mole. THE precipitation of metals and lower oxides from solution by hydrogen reduction has been quite actively investigated during the past few years.1 In the case of nickel, the kinetics of the precipitation have been studied in ammonia solution2 but extension of this study to acid solutions has not attracted much interest, largely because of the unfavorable thermodynamics at all but the lowest acidities. For example, Schaufelberger foundg that only 10 pct reduction of nickel could be effected in sulphate solutions. One kinetic study of the reduction of Ni++ has been reported by Knacke, Pawlek, and Sussmuth,4 in which the order of the reaction was found to be one in nickel ion and one-half in hydrogen pressure. No mention was made as to the part played by the nickel catalyst, or by the pH of the solution. Moreover, the activation energy reported (4 .12 kcal per mole) is so low as to lead to some question as to whether diffusion might be playing a major role in determining the kinetics. We have recently completed a study5 of the kinetics of the hydrogen precipitation of nickel from acetate-buffered acidic solutions whose results confirm and amplify those of Knacke et al. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The work was done in a high-pressure autoclavee by the usual technique of removing small samples of the solution for analysis. Nickel analysis was done colorimetrically by the dimethylglyoxime method.&apos; The catalyst used was carbonyl nickel powder (Standard A powder of the Mond Nickel Co., Ltd.) which was found to be composed of spheres of less than 350 mesh. The surface area of the powder was determined in this laboratory by the B. E. T. method to be 1.85 sq m (m2) per g. The catalyst was added to the solution only after the proper temperature and pressure had been reached. Agitation of the baffled system was by a turbine-type impeller, rotated at speeds between 400 and 750 rpm. The reduction rate was found to be independent of the stirring rate, so it was assumed that diffusion in the liquid does not limit the rate. In typical experiments, the nickel concentration was unchanged during an induction period of variable length. The concentration then decreased sharply, and gradually levelled off to approach the final equilibrium value. In some cases, notably at high stirring rates, the nickel concentration was found to increase considerably during the induction period, and then to decrease. In all cases, the rate was determined from the slope of the tangent to the rate curve as the concentration first decreased below the initial value. This is seen in Fig. 1. The rate measurements were found to be reproducible to within about 5 and to be quite independent of the nature or duration of the induction period. The range of conditions used is given in Table I.

JUDGE GRANT, in a delightful satire of his, says: "Boston is a state of mind." I think that this same statement might well be made of the metallurgy of lead. I was particularly impressed with this when about thirteen or fourteen years ago I prepared a paper on "Development of the American Water- jacket Lead Blast Furnace." Dividing the time, as I did into ten-year periods, from the commencement of lead smelting at Eureka, Nev. (1870), and showing the tendency for each of the five decades it was evident that the progress had been through a succession of states of mind from the rule of thumb through the ultra scientific, or from what I might call the slag type period up to the present highly developed art. Conservatism has been characteristic of the metallurgist. This may have been most natural, especially with the lead metallurgist, the development of whose art was so entirely in the custom smelting plant, where the metal contents of his ores were paid for in cash and therefore excessive metallurgical losses could mean nothing short of financial bankruptcy. The metallurgist himself was held to a personal account, in these smelting plants. It was the metallurgist who was accountable. In the concentrating plants, if undue losses occurred remodelling of the plant was discussed, but if there were excessive metallurgical losses in the custom smelting plant, a new metallurgist was considered as the remedy. For this reason the tendency was to adhere to recognized practice and to be wary of unusual methods, using the word unusual in the sense in which it is used in Article VIII of the Constitution of the United States, as to punishments and modes of death. This conservatism of the metallurgist was reflected as other branches of metallurgy were developed. We have heard of the wonderful development of flotation, but it had to be introduced over the dead metallurgical bodies of its opponents.

INCREASING domestic demand for products, a sharp reduction in exports to Europe, and a rise in imports from South America were the chief features of the economic side of the industry in 1940. As the war progressed it became evident that exports to former European customers were being cut off or drastically reduced, leaving heavy inventories of products in the hands of many American refiners who had anticipated larger demands from the belligerents. Stocks of motor fuel reached burden-some proportions early in the year for the added reason that refining operations were stimulated by heavy demand for heating oils. Excessive tanker rates for Gulf to Eastern Seaboard movements during the first part of 1940 contributed to the accumulation of products on the Gulf Coast, where refinery gasoline prices were forced to extremely low levels by midyear. Tanker rates receded to normal during the summer but have since risen again to the approximate equivalent of pipe-line tariffs from the Mid-Continent.

RECENTLY a report has been published on an investigation of the MO-RU system by E. Raub.&apos; In this report it is stated that below approximately 1200°C the system consists of two terminal solid-solution phases and the intervening two-phase field; at 1200°C and above, an intermetallic compound labeled Mo,Ru, makes an appearance. Along with some other little known systems in which it was considered possible for a u phase to form, the Mo-Ru system had been under investigation in this laboratory. Since molybdenum and ruthenium have very high melting points and also since ruthenium is expensive, the investigation was confined to X-ray diffraction by sintered powder compacts. The compositions which were studied were (in atomic percentages): 75 Mo-25 Ru, 67 Mo-33 Ru, 50 Mo-50 Ru, and 25 Mo-75 Ru. All compacts were made from the pure powders, and no chemical analyses were attempted. Each compact weighed about 5 g. All annealing was done in evacuated Vycor capsules, and even though the capsules completely collapsed at 1250°C, they still admitted no air. The results of this investigation in general corroborate the work of Raub. Up to 1150°C the two terminal solutions and the intervening two-phase field were found, and at 1200°C and above an intermetallic compound was found. However, the composition limits of the compound were estimated to lie close to 70 atomic pct Mo rather than 62.5 atomic pct Mo as Raub had reported. At least the X-ray diffraction results indicated that the 75 atomic pct Mo specimen consisted of the molybdenum solid solution plus the compound, while the 67 atomic pct Mo specimen consisted of the ruthenium solid solution plus the compound and the equiatomic composition contained only very little of the compound. The most interesting observation, however, was that the diffraction pattern of the compound was similar to that of the well known u phases, except that unusually large lattice constants were indicated. The d-values, or interplanar spacings, of the diffraction lines (as produced by filtered copper KCX radiation) of the compound are given in Table I, as determined from specimens annealed at 1250°C for 9 hr and then quenched in water. Also shown are the lines of the Mn-Mo u phase as given by Decker, Waterstrat, and Kasper,&apos; the lines of the Fe-Mo a as given by Goldschmidt," and the lines of the Mo-Ru phase multiplied by constants in order to make comparison with the Mn-Mo and Fe-Mo patterns easier. These results indicate that the compound in the Mo-Ru system is apparently isomorphous with the other o- compounds. The rather large lattice constants of the Mo-Ru a phase are acceptable in view of the comparatively large size of the constituent atoms. The data in Table I for the Mo-Ru compound check quite well with those given by Raub, not shown here, though there are some discrepancies between the two sets of data in the estimated intensities of a few lines. Although very little is known at present about this u phase, there are some things which may be pointed out, mainly in comparison with other better known u phases. Even though molybdenum and ruthenium are in the same columns in the Table of Elements as chromium and iron, respectively, the Mo-Ru u phase contains much more molybdenum than ruthenium, while the Cr-Fe u phase centers around or very nearly around the equiatomic composition; furthermore, the Mo-Ru u is stable only above approximately 1200°C, but the Cr-Fe u is stable only below about 825 °C. With respect to its being unstable below 1200°C, the Mo-Ru u is similar to the other binary molybdenum u phases in the Co-Mo and Fe-Mo systems. Similar to the latter two systems, the Mo-Ru u apparently exists over a rather narrow composition range, whereas the Cr-Fe u at lower temperatures is stable over a much wider composition range. The Mo-Ru u thus is closer to the other molybdenum u phases than to the Cr-Fe cr phase. The most striking feature of the Mo-Ru u phase, however, is the absence of any of the transition elements of the First Long Period.

THE economics of aerial survey and the technical processes by the aid of which vertical and oblique aerial photographs are turned into line maps showing the most profuse topographical detail such as contours, rivers, roads, plantations, habitations and cultivated lands do not concern us here. They have been ably and exhaustively described in the publi-cations of the British War Office, handbooks on surveying methods and on photogrammetry and in the South African mining, engineering and geological press. Suffice it to mention that for geological interpretation vertical photo-graphs are used on such scales as soon to 1/5,000 to 1/10,000, overlapping each other by 55 to 60 per cent in the direction of flight and some 10 to 20 per cent sideways on to the next sequence or strip. Through this duplication in the overlap the stereoscopic examination becomes possible. The standards by which monochrome aerial photographs are inter-preted can be grouped under the following headings: 1. Continuity.-The continuity of topographic relief not obtainable on the ground owing to the smallness of man relative to that relief. Here lies the greatest value of aerial survey with relation to geology. An immediate alignment can often be made of drainages running in different directions on each side of a hill; saddles and gorges in the mountainsides; abrupt termination of outcrop or indubitable signs of faulting. Most conclusive evidence is thus often obtained about faults which may be perfectly visible at one place on the ground but cannot elsewhere be identified because of decreased throw. Similarly, dikes can often be followed notwithstanding frequent interruption and disappearance under the soil. Scattered outcrop in scrub-covered or bush-covered country can be conveniently located and often correlated, with a large saving of time compared with field work. The same applies to geological contacts. Once these have been established at a few points on the ground, the intervening stretches can be drawn in.

ONE of the properties of copper, which has done much to give it its present prominent place among the useful metals, is its electrical conductivity, a property which has now become the chief criterion of &apos;the value of the commerical product. In pursuance of that distinctively American principle that, 1&apos; the best is none too good," metal of the highest conductivity is usually called for even where such extreme purity is of no advantage, for instance, in the making of brass and other alloys. The average brass-founder feels nervous unless his copper is so very pure that it shows a conductivity of 99 or 100 per cent., while the character of the zinc used is usually overlooked in his anxiety. Electrolytic refining has made it possible to produce copper of a&apos; very high degree of purity, the metallic impurities averaging but a few thousandths of 1 per cent.; oxygen, usually present in the form of cuprous oxide, bringing the total up to about a tenth of 1 per cent. The published data bearing upon the relationship between chemical purity and electrical conductivity is, however, very scant,&apos; nearly all the work that has been done having dealt with alloys carrying considerable quantities of the foreign elements. THE 1944 Chairman of the Institute of Metals Division might be classed as metallurgically ambidextrous ; he is teacher of theory and practice of both nonferrous and ferrous metallurgy, and he is consultant on brass and on highspred steel. Arthur Phillips was born in Troy N.Y. and attended the New Haven Connecticut high school. Upon graduation he entered Yale, receiving a degree in metallurgy in 1913. At that time Professor Mathewson was starting his plan of &apos;"co-operation with the metal industries in metallographic work at the Hammond Laboratory of the Sheffield Scientific School, Yale University, and Arthur Phillip, became the first co-operative graduate student, working in the laboratory of the Bridgeport Brass Co., and receiving his Masters of Science degree in 1915. A little later, when the department of metallurgy at Yale was expanded. Me. Phillips was appointed assistant professor. In 1928 he was made associate professor, and in 1934 he was promoted to full professor.

The Ti-Al system certainly merits the investigative attention it has been receiving and this latest contribution by Blackburn is therefore to be welcomed. The titanium-rich end of the phase diagram shown here, as well as the diagram by crossley,17 Clark et a1.,18 and Tsujimoto and Adachi,29 reveal no other intermediate phase than Ti3A1, although a previous work by Ence and Margolin20 had reported an additional intermediate phase. Since then, Buerger Precession pictures of single crystals of 10.5, 11.5, and 12.5 wt pct A1 were made at New York university21 and the extinctions were found to be typical of a D6h a Ti structure. Some superlat-tice spots and/or streaks suggesting the presence of an Mg3Cd structure, i.e., Ti3Al, were also found. Since these specimens had been quenched from the y region20 and had revealed a Ti, it was concludedz1 that y does not exist and the structures interpreted as m + y could not be so considered. The absence of normal two-phase behavior in these structures had been indicated in the paper. Accordingly, the two-phase region y + 6 becomes a + Ti3Al and there is some agreement between the results of Blackburn and of Ence and Margolin20 as to both shape and existence above 900°C of an a + Ti3Al field. Crossley 17 proposed that Ti3Al is a line compound which decomposes congruently at 900°C. It is difficult to discount entirely the fact that clear two-phase structures, varying in amount with position in the two-phase field, could be detected above 900°C by Ence and Margolin.20 Precipitation during quenching could not have been so regular and the twin-phase syndrome17 does not apply. The heat treatment and quenching technique was essentially the same as was used by Crossley, whereas Blackburn, who used a rapid quenching procedure, also showed a two-phase a + Ti3A1 field above 900°C. If the two-phase field exists above 900° C, it is easy to picture a two-phase field which could account for the data of Crossley below 900°C without invoking a line compound existence of Ti3A1. All that would be necessary would be an 0 + Ti3Al/Ti3Al boundary which curved sharply to higher aluminum contents below 900° C. It is clear that the controversy must be solved by techniques which obtain data at elevated temperatures without quenching. It is conceivable that the difference in width of the a + Ti3N fields reported by Blackburn and by Ence and Margolin is due to the longer annealing times used by the latter investigators. The theory of the Askania magnetometer, as well as a complete discussion of all factors influencing magnetometer readings, is very ably described by J. Wallace Joyce. We will assume that the reader is thoroughly familiar with this theory and we will use whenever possible the same notations for the physical values involved in the theory. On the other hand, we believe that the principal formulas of the magnetometer can be deduced much more easily by the use of differential calculus than by the methods employed by Joyce. Consequently, we are presenting herewith a resume of the theory of the vertical magnetometer in order to determine the correct formula of the temperature coefficient which we propose to compensate.

THE large increase in the use of selective flotation as contrasted with the collective flotation of a few years ago has focussed attention on the desirability of achieving accurate control of the pH of mill circuits. Although it is well-known that alkaline circuits result in dropping pyrite and that acid circuits conversely float it, but drop the gangue, there is little that is known, beyond question, ass to the action of the acidity or alkalinity of the circuits. A complete answer is not available at present but experiments -are now in progress at the University of Utah, whose aim is to find out what the effect is on recovery of a change in hydrogen-ion concentration and how this change is brought about. Broadly speaking, a change in hydrogen-ion concen¬tration seems to affect either the mineral surface, as was suggested by A. W. Fahrenwald in his paper "Surface Reactions in Flotation"1 (TRANS. 70, 647) or the attachment of the collecting agent on the mineral surface.

ATHOUGH flotation has been a commercial process for over twenty years, the last two years have witnessed a sudden and phenomenal increase in our knowledge of how to separate minerals heretofore not considered amenable to flotation at all. As remarked by Professor Locke in the January issue. "Either commercial or laboratory flotation is reported on zircon, ilmenite, carnotite, kyanite, scheelite, chromite, fluorite, feldspar, cassiterite, wolframite, barite, and clay. Attractive patents on soap flotation are U. S. Nos. 2,000,656 and 2,040.187. A survey by Ralston in the February E. & M. J. adds many other minerals to this impressive list. The simple but pregnant fact is that any mineral can be coated, directly or indirectly, with a water-repellent coating, and since this is true, it follows that any mineral can be floated. Fundamentally, this is no new discovery, where, for instance, is the mineral that cannot he washed from a pair of dirty hands by means of soap and water, given the absence of refractory greases or oils which would have no proper place in flotation ?
