DIAMOND drilling has advanced and expanded during the past few years. Along with this increase there has been a marked trend to rely more and more upon drilling for the outlining of ore for reserve purposes. This is especially true underground, where men have not been available for opening up ore by crosscuts, drifts and raises. During the recent heavy call upon known ore reserves, more drilling has been done for exploration and it has become expedient to drill longer lateral holes from underground and deeper holes both from surface and from exploration headings in the mines. Furthermore, these deeper holes have to be drilled closely enough to warrant calculation of "probable" if not "proven" ore, from the results obtained therefrom. Interpretation of diamond-drill results has become more precise and reliable with the growing knowledge and understanding of the geologic structures that control the geometry of ore distribution, and this has broadened the field of usefulness of the drill. All of this has created a necessity and a demand for more accurate control of the hole as to direction, a more precise and reliable method of surveying for position, and a need for better and more complete core recovery, as well as larger cores, to provide an adequate sample. At depth the control becomes more difficult and, at the same time, more important. CONTROL A close study of drilling in various parts of the world for a period of more than 20 years has brought to light one definite rule, practically invariable; namely, that diamond-drill holes tend to deviate into a position normal to any structure existing in the rocks, such as bedding, schistosity, gneissosity, or even parting or jointing-even if the hole is started at almost any angle other than parallel with the structure. It also appears that the better developed the structure is, the more quickly will the hole get into a position perpendicular to it. It has often been said that there is a tendency for holes to "drift" in the direction of rotation. This is obviously untrue, for in a vertical hole the measure of deviation would depend upon the azimuth chosen as zero, and there is an infinite number of choices. It has been proved, however, that in homogeneous rocks there is a tendency for the hole to corkscrew, and that the direction of the spiral is the same as the direction of rotation. This may account for the belief that holes drift in that direction. Some tests have been made using right-hand and left-hand rods, and these show that no matter what the direction of rotation the hole will swing into a position perpendicular to the structure. Methods of Control The foregoing empirical rule may be used as an indirect method of control. If the prevailing structure is known, it may be advantageous to start the hole as nearly normal to it as possible, for the nearer the direction of the hole is to this ideal, the straighter it will remain. Hoisting is one of the earliest endeavors of man with machinery, for hoisting was probably used by the early Egyptians. Treadmills were used for general hoisting until early in the nineteenth century and it was a short step only to attach a Watt steam engine to the rope drum of a hoist. One of the earliest steam hoists was built for a coal mine at Frisne, near Valenciennes, France. It was a remarkable piece of engineering created by James Watt in 1811, using a wooden drum on a vertical shaft. This followed the crude hoist by Holtzhausen in 1803, which used a drum of wood on a horizontal shaft.' In this country there were examples of crude mine hoists, which have been developed into the efficient machines in use today. African and Australian mines show examples of both extremes, and have an array of fine hoisting equipment exemplified in those built by British manufacturers. The influence of both English and American engineering in hoisting is interestingly evident in Canada. The information available to the writer does not reveal this to be true of South Africa, although American-built hoists have been furnished. Mining camps develop their own style of equipment, adapted to local conditions. For instance, the Butte mining district adheres to the straight drum with friction clutches, because of the great number of levels from which hoisting is done or to which men and material are lowered and the necessity for hoisting or lowering unbalanced. The north Michigan copper country uses both straight and cylindroconical drums and hoists continually in balance, so that the drums are not clutched to the main driving shaft. The Joplin mining district, Missouri, has its own peculiar small hoists. Other individual mines or localities in which a number of mines have been developed show individualistic types of hoists, depending upon their particular problems. In each instance, however, the particular problem must be carefully analyzed, as conditions are seldom so near the same that a number of identical hoists can be used to advantage.

This is an attempt to bring together some of the knowledge of the coal-forming conditions obtaining during the Pennsylvanian period in the Western Interior Coal Province, to sketch briefly the present extent and character of the coals produced, and to show the beginning of correlation of beds over wide areas. Coals of later age than the Pennsylvanian are not included and, for reasons that will appear later, little attempt is made to cover the districts of eastern Oklahoma and western Arkansas, and northern Texas is omitted entirely. Geological Conditions The conditions that made possible the formation of large coal beds in the United States were most favorable in the Pennsylvanian period, formerly known as the Upper Carboniferous. The geological conditions can be determined from the records, but not the reasons for them. Preceding the Pennsylvanian was the Mississippian, formerly known as the lower Carboniferous and still later as the sub-Carboniferous. During this time, large bodies of limestone were deposited and at the close of the Mississippian they were warped upward and for a long period were eroded. Then there began a period of subsidence, more or less interrupted at times, during which the Pennsylvanian strata were deposited (see table on next page). These consist of sandstones, limestones and shales, with occasional coal beds. At the beginning of the Pennsylvanian there was subsidence, which allowed the sea to extend over the eroded Mississippian surface to the north and east. It passed over eastern and central Texas, a large part of Oklahoma, with a projection into Arkansas, over Kansas and part of Nebraska, all the northern and western part of Missouri, a large part of Iowa except a strip in the north, most of Illinois, practically all of Kentucky, northern Tennessee, most of Indiana, all of the eastern part of Ohio, practically all of West Virginia, western Maryland, the west end of Virginia, and a large part of Pennsylvania. A useful accelerated weathering test should be capable of placing any series of metals quantitatively in the same order of endurance as that noted under a particular set of actual exposure conditions. The development of such a test must necessarily depend to a considerable extent upon data obtained from a wide variety of exposures. This paper offers preliminary data from exposure tests on nine metals placed in 11 locations in the Lehigh Valley, within a radius of 20 miles from Palmerton. The exposure conditions vary from a severe industrial atmosphere to a pure rural atmosphere. The data are offered as evidence of the necessity for the identification and evaluation of the variables of corrosion and as illustration of some of the variations to be considered in the development of a useful accelerated test. It is quite clear, from this evidence, that a useful accelerated test must be versatile to the extent of showing the probable variations of corrosion resulting from differences in atmosphere as well as from differences in the metals. The paper is presented solely with the object of pointing out the wide variations in relative merits of several common metals in resisting corrosion and without any thought of initiating controversy regarding the merits of particular metals. For this reason the metals are designated only by symbols in the tables and no key is given to these symbols. Test Procedure Specimens, 4 by 6 in., were cut to accurate dimensions from each of the following metals or alloys: aluminum, ascoloy, copper, copper steel, galvanized iron, and zinc. Additional grades of these metals bring the total to nine types. Since it was impossible to obtain the required number of copper-steel specimens having equal surface conditions of rust and scale, it was thought advisable to pickle these specimens in a hot solution of 10 per cent. sulfuric acid. All other specimens were carefully cleaned in ether and alcohol and weighed just prior to exposure. Four specimens of each type of metal were mounted on a test rack by means of porcelain insulators. S. Mortsell and J. Svenssofi (Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden)—Bloecher states that the apparatus described by him should be a suitable instrument in the mineral dressing laboratories for determining the specific surface of such granular products that are generally investigated. We want to express a somewhat different opinion, as we doubt that the gas adsorption method of surface measurement really is the most suitable method in mineral dressing laboratories. It is well known that the surface area, as measured by this method, does not coincide with the surface area calculated from the size, shape, and number of particles, i.e. the superficial surface of the particles. It can be seen easily from Mr. Bloecher's own determination on ilmenite-leucoxene concentrate that the surface area measured according to this method may be several hundred times larger than the superficial surface. It is supposed that the surface of cracks, fissures, and pores within the particles also is included in the measured surface. However, this is an assumption which scarcely can be proved and certainly has not been proved. We believe that the mineral engineer could better use a method giving the superficial surface of the particles, as in most cases this surface only is of importance to him. Such is certainly the case when calculating the resistance of the fluid flow through granu- lar materials and the capillary forces of such materials, problems which are of great importance in connection with dewatering, filtration, and pelletizing'" etc. The same may also be the case when studying flotation problems, partly since the quantities of the introduced reagents usually are so small that they can only cover the most accessible surface of the particles, and partly since the molecules of at least the collecting reagents are so large that they cannot enter the smallest cracks and pores. As to the surface, which is of consequence in the application of Rittinger's law of crushing, one is inclined to believe, from theoretical reasons and from the work by Gross and Zimmerley, that the total surface here is the most important one. However, it seems as if in that case the superficial surface was as important as the total surface. Other reasons making the gas adsorption method less suitable for use in the mineral dressing laboratories are that the granular materials there very often are too coarse to be measured by this method, that the experimental technique is rather difficult, and that it takes a long time to measure the specific surface of a sample. Besides, the validity of the method must still be considered questionable. It is thus well known that with different gases one usually gets different values of the specific surface of the same sample, which values, even with such an ideal material as metal foils, can differ as much as about 50 pct.'" MR. BIRKINBINE'S description of the bad working and sudden chilling of the Warwick Furnace last summer, seems to me quite phenomenal in blast-furnace practice. During my connection with the management of blast furnaces for many years, in the anthracite, coke, and raw-bituminous coal districts, such a case has never come under my notice. It seems to me that the scaffold in the zone of fusion could not have established itself (so that the whole power of the engines, with a blast pressure ranging from 12 to 18 pounds per square inch, could not penetrate), unless the furnace was previously badly scaffolded and bridged in some of its upper sections, from 15 to 30 feet above the hearth level, either in the zone of chemical action or the beginning of the zone of fusion. Such a "barrier to the upward gaseous currents would cause a suspension of combustion which may have superinducedd the scaffold that is assumed to have existed in the zone of fusion. It is Difficult to conceive' that an agglomerated mass almost across the section of the lower bosh should have formed all at once, if the furnace was free and porous for the reaction of the gaseous currents above. Therefore, I think, the Warwick furnace was by no means in as free, open, and fine internal condition at the time the trouble commenced as the description of its regular working would lead us to suppose. I do not question the accuracy of the statements relative to the output of iron, etc. I merely claim that the phenomena., as described, could not have been almost instantaneously developed, unless there had been an incipient seaffold and lodgment above the zone of fusion. Flotation may be defined as a process whereby mineral particles are concentrated by selective adhesion to air-liquid interfaces. The process involves attachment of desired mineral particles to air bubbles, and removal of the mineralized air bubbles from the surface of the pulp as a mineral concentrate. Problem Although great strides have been made in understanding the principles of flotation, one part of the process which has not been adequately explained is the mechanism by which selected mineral particles become attached to air bubbles. A glance at the froth of an operating flotation cell demonstrates adequately that use of proper reagents and conditions mill result in such attachments; but how such attachment takes place is not definitely known. A better knowledge of this factor might lead to improved flotation practice either through altered machine design or the application of scientific innovations. Direct observation of the behavior of mineral particles and bubbles in an operating cell does not appear promising because of the complexity of the system. For this reason, conclusions concerning the problem must be deduced from theoretical considerations or from observation of simplified systems designed to reproduce conditions thought to exist in an operating cell. Present Theories Two mechanisms have been recognized as fundamental in particle-bubble attachment: gas precipitation and direct encounter. It is a simple matter to demonstrate in the laboratory that attachment can be brought about by either mechanism. As to the relative importance of the two in a particular flotation system, however, there is a divergence of views. Taggart1 states, Under exceptional circumstances sufficient force and time to effect attachment may conjoin in an ore pulp undergoing agitation, and a preformed bubble adhere to a collector-coated mineral particle, but the occurrence is rare. . . . Pulp-body froth flotation effects selection in the body of a conditioned pulp by causing gas bubbles to precipitate from solution in the liquid phase preferentially at the surfaces of collector-coated particles, and to cling to these particles, Gaudin2 states that, within the pulp body of an agitation machine, attachment of mineral particles to air bubbles occurs as a consequence of contact between the two. This theory has been supported by theoretical reasoning and much circumstantial evidence. The anthracite industry can be divided into two parts—the underground, or mining, and the outside, or preparation or manufacture. To understand recoveries in the two branches, some of the history of the industry and the changes that have taken place in the past century should be considered. It is a long step from 1807, when 55 tons were produced in the Wyoming field, to 1917, the peak year, when 80,841,223 tons were shipped to market from all the fields. In 1820, the Lehigh Coal Co., the predecessor of the Lehigh Coal & Navigation Co., shipped 365 tons in arks down the canal of the Lehigh Navigation Co. The Schuylkill field was not opened until 1822, when 1480 tons were shipped. The Wyoming field really became a producer in 1829, when 7000 tons were mined and shipped. It is well to note, at this time, the passing of the Coleraine colliery after a life of 88 years; in collieries of this age will be found the romance of the region, as well as the history of the changes to date. Mining Methods In the Lehigh region, the first coal came from the old quarry mines at Summit Hill; a little later the open-cut workings, or quarries, east of Jeansville, and near Beaver Meadow were opened. In the Wyoming field, it was necessary to resort to underground mining almost from the very first. Ashmead1 has described the changes in outside preparation methods, dl tending to increase the percentage of coal shipped to market. A description from the days when the lump coal was raked and screened out in the quarries or mines, to the modern breaker of today, shipping as high as 6000 tons of at least eight sizes of coal in an 8-hr. day is a very interesting story. Each size is a step toward increasing the yield from the property. With the belief that the supply was inexhaustible, the early mining was conducted with the thought of getting the maximum amount of coal on first mining. The superintendent was his own foreman and engineer.

A BRIEF review of the oil conditions in California for a few years prior to 1923 is desirable for a clear comprehension of the development during that year and the results of the development. California's oil production during the five years preceding 1922 had been running from 100,000,000 to 115,000,000 bbl. annually. Crude oil stocks in storage had been declining steadily from 1915 to 1919, when there was a slight increase. They continued to decline through practically all of 1920, when they were drawn on to the extent of 11,350,000 bbl., leaving 20,930,000 bbl. on hand. In 1921, with production approximately 10,000,000 bbl. greater than the previous year, crude-oil stocks increased until, at the end of the year, there were 33,289,000 bbl. on hand. It would seem, therefore, that at the end of 1921 the so-called Pacific Coast province could absorb between 100,000,000 and 105,000,000 bbl. of oil per year, any in excess of this amount going into storage, not being, able to compete in other markets with oil outside the state. During 1922, daily production increased from 316,000 bbl. at the beginning of the year, to 500,000, at the end. This increase was the result entirely of production from the new fields, in the Los Angeles basin. In fact, considerable oil from the older fields of the state was shut-in beginning with March, 1922. As of 1922, the past development of the oil industry of California had been, in a general way, quite regular. As the need grew for more oil, pioneer drilling was increased, resulting in the discovery of new fields here and there. The good prices for crude oil that prevailed during the later part of the War and into 1921 had stimulated an extensive wildcatting campaign by California's larger oil corporations, as well as by smaller independent oil companies and by individuals. Many wildcat wells in California have required, two or three years for their completion, consequently the intensive wildcatting, which might be said to have started in California in 1917 and continued into 1922, found its greatest results with, the discovery of three very productive fields which, for all practical purposes, might as well have come in simultaneously.

A detailed description of the many variations in iron mining and transportation practice in Minnesota would require much space. Since a fairly detailed description of the practices then in use was published in the guidebook issued in connection with the meeting of the Institute on the iron ranges in 1920, and subsequent developments have been described by E. E. Hunner, M. H. Barber,2 and A. E. Anderson, J. M. Riddell and G. J. Holt,³ it will not be necessary here to do more than review the highlights of current practice. Details on any points of interest can be obtained through correspondence with the operators involved. † The iron ores of Minnesota, which have been formed through enrichment of the iron formation in which they occur, largely by the removal of silica, are usually covered by a blanket of glacial drift known locally as "surface." Surface material, including sand, clay, hardpan and boulders, makes up the greater portion of the stripping in open-pit operations. In some instances, stripping also includes taconite and paint rock," directly below the surface material and overlying the ore. Tacenite is the iron formation, a ferruginous chert with inter-bedded slate layers. :'paint rock" is a local term for oxidized slate layers inter- bedded in the iron formation, high in phosphorus, alumina and moisture. The iron ores fall into two classes: (I) direct shipping (merchantable ores or ores requiring no treatment except possibly crushing or screening to make an acceptable sized product), and (2) ores requiring beneficiation (such as sintering, drying, washing, jigging, high-density treatment, or magnetic separation in the case of magnetite). The Mesabi Range produces chiefly soft Bessemer and non-Bessemer ores. The Cuyuna Range produces mainly low-manganese brown ore and high-manganese black ores, with some iron ore. The Vermilion Range yields mainly Bessemer and non-Bessemer iron ore, with some hard or lump ore that finds use in the open hearth. Open-pit mining is limited to the Mesabi and Cuyuna Ranges but underground mining is done on all three. The choice of mining methods is determined by the relative economics of overburden-removal and shaft-mining costs. Stripping Practice Common practice has been to remove the bulk of the overburden during the winter season and to mine during the summer, In- the present emergency many operators are forced to forego the economies attained by year-round utilization of paper. and to equip for, and carry on, stripping and mining simultaneously. In the normal years or lean years to come, most properties probably will be overequipped and high depreciation charges Will have to be absorbed.

In 1930, Taggart, Taylor and Knoll1 found that addition of various electrolytes to suspensions of ground minerals resulted in the stopping or starting of Brownian movement of the suspended particles. On the basis of the many new facts found, they rejected the " classical"† theory of Brownian movement and proposed an "ioniza-tion " theory. This new theory was further supported in later publications by Taggart.3,4 The acceptance of the ionization theory by men in the field of flotation may be judged by the mention given this theory in Gaudin's "Principles of Mineral Dressing,'16 Wark's "Principles of Flotation,"8 as well as in a recent paper by Fitt, Thomas and Taggart.7 The proponents of the ionization theory have gone further than the mere statement of the new theory. A parallelism between the Brownian movement of mineral particles and their behavior in flotation was reported.1,3,4 Likewise, the correlation between flocculation-dispersion of mineral particles and the Brownian movement of these particles has been investigated.' Bankoffl5 has suggested that "slime-coating" can also be directly correlated with the Brownian movement of the slime particles. In each of the instances mentioned it is the ionization theory of Brownian movement that has been used to "explain" the correlations that were found. The essential conflict between the kinetic theory and the ionization theory can be understood best by a brief description of each. The kinetic theory* proposes that Brownian movement is caused by the impacts of liquid molecules against the solid particles. At any instant of time, the molecular impacts on all sides of the solid particle will not balance, and the particle will receive a push in some direction. According to this theory, dl particles suspended in a liquid are in Brownian movement. However, if the particle is very large, the impacts on all sides will very nearly balance and the motion will not be noticeable. Another factor, besides the size of the particle, that affects the magnitude of the Brownian movement is the viscosity of the liquid—the greater the viscosity, the less the displacement of particles by Brownian movement. Through the simultaneous statement of Maxwell's equations. the turbulent Navier-Stokes equations and the differential thermal energy balance equation, a mathematical representation has been developed for heat transfer and fluid flow in electric arc furnaces. In broad outline the theoretical predictions appear to be consistent with experimental measurements. A discussion is presented of the general arc furnace control and optimization problem, together with the potential for the incorporation of the mathematical model given in the paper, into future control and optimization schemes. ELECTRIC ARC FURNACE STEELMAKING accounts for about 24% of the total steel produced in the U.S., consuming about 550kw-hr/ton of steel which amounts to about 1.4x1010 kw-hr annually. The percentage of steel produced by the electric arc furnace route has doubled since 1960 and is expected to increase further in the foreseeable future, particularly with the more extensive use of direct reduction technology. Table I shows, in terms of percentages, the principal items that contribute to the cost of running an electric arc furnace. It is seen that in addition to the fixed costs (labor, depreciation, taxes etc.) electrode costs and power consumption are the dominant inputs, and it follows that process changes that would ultimately reduce any of these cost components would have a significant impact on the efficiency of the operation. There are three main areas where progress in arc furnace design and operation must be directed in the next decade (Committee on Technology, 1981). 1. Increased furnace productivity 2. Reduction in processing cost 3. Improvement in the thermal efficiency of the furnace An estimate of the current operating efficiency of the electric arc furnaces may be obtained by comparing the theoretical minimum energy consumption per ton of steel with those achieved in operational practice. Theoretically 330-360 kw-hrs of electricity are required to melt one ton of cold scrap. For superheating, 8-12 kWh per 100°F are required. The actual energy requirements are given in Table II. It is seen that furnaces currently operate at 70-80% efficiency, with the major heat loss from the furnace resulting from the waste gases (Committee on Technology, 1981). While it is apparent that operational experience has produced a technology that is reasonably energy efficient this has been achieved in the almost complete absence of any detailed knowledge concerning the fundamental heat transfer mechanisms occuring in the furnace. The purpose of the present paper is to present a case for the usefulness of mathematical models in increasing the thermal efficiency of furnaces by investigating these heat transfer mechanisms and then combining this knowledge with existing electrode regulator mechanisms to produce truly efficient power cycles for melting and refining. In particular, existing mathematical models describing convection, radiation, and electro-magnetism in the furnace should be employed, and the development of optimization models which balance the cost of electrodes and energy against the thermal efficience of the furnace should be undertaken. Recent work in this laboratory (Szekely, McKelliget, 1981, 1982, 1983; Szekely, McKelliget, Choudhary, 1983) has made a useful start towards solving the problem of heat transfer within the electric arc furnace but the work still needs to be directly related to existing furnace power cycles and tested against plant scale measurements.

In 1930, Taggart, Taylor and Knoll1 found that addition of various electrolytes to suspensions of ground minerals resulted in the stopping or starting of Brownian movement of the suspended particles. On the basis of the many new facts found, they rejected the " classical"† theory of Brownian movement and proposed an "ioniza-tion " theory. This new theory was further supported in later publications by Taggart.3,4 The acceptance of the ionization theory by men in the field of flotation may be judged by the mention given this theory in Gaudin's "Principles of Mineral Dressing,'16 Wark's "Principles of Flotation,"8 as well as in a recent paper by Fitt, Thomas and Taggart.7 The proponents of the ionization theory have gone further than the mere statement of the new theory. A parallelism between the Brownian movement of mineral particles and their behavior in flotation was reported.1,3,4 Likewise, the correlation between flocculation-dispersion of mineral particles and the Brownian movement of these particles has been investigated.' Bankoffl5 has suggested that "slime-coating" can also be directly correlated with the Brownian movement of the slime particles. In each of the instances mentioned it is the ionization theory of Brownian movement that has been used to "explain" the correlations that were found. The essential conflict between the kinetic theory and the ionization theory can be understood best by a brief description of each. The kinetic theory* proposes that Brownian movement is caused by the impacts of liquid molecules against the solid particles. At any instant of time, the molecular impacts on all sides of the solid particle will not balance, and the particle will receive a push in some direction. According to this theory, dl particles suspended in a liquid are in Brownian movement. However, if the particle is very large, the impacts on all sides will very nearly balance and the motion will not be noticeable. Another factor, besides the size of the particle, that affects the magnitude of the Brownian movement is the viscosity of the liquid—the greater the viscosity, the less the displacement of particles by Brownian movement. An experiment is described in which the growth of interparticle necks in an array of loose spherical silver powder at temperatures near 300°C was determined by measuring changes in the electrical resistance of the array. The activation energy for neck growth of contacts was derived by abruptly changing temperature and noting the change in the rate of neck growth. Since the experiments were run under an external load, the changes in activation energy with stress could he determined. The activation energy was found to decrease rapidly with increasing stress. It is concluded that the material transport in the experiments is one of plastic flow by dislocation motion. The variation of activation energy with stress is typical for cross slip of dislocations, an important material transport mechanism in the temperature range investigated. THE process in which powder compacts or aggregates of loose powder are held at an elevated temperature under an external load is called hot pressing or sintering under pressure by powder metallurgists. In this investigation the early stages of this process as applied to loose spherical silver- powder aggregates were studied. The powder particles were approximately 100µ in diameter and the temperature was near 300°C, i.e., below one half of the melting point of silver in degrees Kelvin, where volume diffusion is not expected to contribute to sintering. In the process, the contact or neck areas between powder particles grow. Since this involves plastic deformation of the particles under a constant external load (even though not under constant stress) it would be termed creep by mechanical metallurgists. On the other hand, the growth in neck area observed in compacts or loose-powder aggregates held at elevated temperature without the application of an external load is termed sintering by powder metallurgists. During sintering the major driving force is the stress due to surface tension. However, even when no load is placed on the compact or powder aggregate, an external stress, i.e., gravity, plays an important role in sintering in addition to those stresses arising from surface tension, as was shown in two previous investigations.'" It is therefore postulated that no sharp dividing line can be drawn between the phenomena of "creep" and "sintering". Different material transport mechanisms may be involved in either of these phenomena, but they will depend upon the temperature and the level of stress, but not necessarily upon the nature of the driving force: surface tension or external load. At the low temperatures of this investigation, an external stress much higher than the stress due to surface tension is necessary to obtain measurable rates of neck growth. In these opening remarks, I will endeavor to give a background of continuous casting of metals. Only passing attention will be given to the different processes to be described by the authors whose papers are on the program, as they are far more familiar than I am with their subject matter. Suffice to say that over the past several years the brass, copper, aluminum and magnesium industries have shifted practically completely from conventional static molds to continuous casting machines. The Aluminum Company of America alone has more than 60 continuous machines in operation. The product as continuously cast is superior metallurgically, less scrap loss is involved, costs are generally lower, and the equipment requires little floor space. A continuous machine, operating as it does with deadly constancy, is a ravenous consumer of molten metal, and in most plants one or two machines are well able to handle large banks of melting and refining furnaces. In steel, interest in continuous casting is today more serious than ever before in history, and there is every reason to believe that continuous machines may secure a minor place in the ferrous industry, particularly for tool and alloy analyses. In the past, steel has been commercially cast continuously, and today many tons of steel are being turned out in this manner. It has been said that the cradle of every science is surrounded by dead theorists— and certainly there are innumerable examples of this in the metals industries. An excellent illustration, for instance, is the continuous rolling of metal, a tantalizing objective that for decades on end exhausted . the efforts of a long line of famous, infamous and unknown inventors. Finally, in 1922, John B. Tytus, of the American Rolling Mill Co., brought forth what now seems such an obviously simple scheme— a concave roll face, each stand of progressivcly less concavity. And out of this one change in design sprang today's wide continuous mill rolling steel sheet Ioo in. wide at 2000 ft. per minute. Another excellent example is the con- . tinuous casting of liquid metal into an intermediate form, preferably one requiring little subsequent breakdown. First, the casting of liquid metal alone was fascinating enough. Then someone passed the cast metal directly into a rolling mill, and shortly thereafter this continuously rolled strip was passed directly into a stamping machine. This leitmotiv of a continuous flow of metal from the liquid phase to a consumer end product, fast and inexpensive, and all housed within a small space, was enough to drive some 200 or so inventors into frenzy over the past hundred years. All the ideas, however, like mayflies, had only their brief afternoon of existence. They were born and they died on paper, as constant exemplification of that great void that always exists between mental production and commercial production.

A detailed description of the many variations in iron mining and transportation practice in Minnesota would require much space. Since a fairly detailed description of the practices then in use was published in the guidebook issued in connection with the meeting of the Institute on the iron ranges in 1920, and subsequent developments have been described by E. E. Hunner, M. H. Barber,2 and A. E. Anderson, J. M. Riddell and G. J. Holt,³ it will not be necessary here to do more than review the highlights of current practice. Details on any points of interest can be obtained through correspondence with the operators involved. † The iron ores of Minnesota, which have been formed through enrichment of the iron formation in which they occur, largely by the removal of silica, are usually covered by a blanket of glacial drift known locally as "surface." Surface material, including sand, clay, hardpan and boulders, makes up the greater portion of the stripping in open-pit operations. In some instances, stripping also includes taconite and paint rock," directly below the surface material and overlying the ore. Tacenite is the iron formation, a ferruginous chert with inter-bedded slate layers. :'paint rock" is a local term for oxidized slate layers inter- bedded in the iron formation, high in phosphorus, alumina and moisture. The iron ores fall into two classes: (I) direct shipping (merchantable ores or ores requiring no treatment except possibly crushing or screening to make an acceptable sized product), and (2) ores requiring beneficiation (such as sintering, drying, washing, jigging, high-density treatment, or magnetic separation in the case of magnetite). The Mesabi Range produces chiefly soft Bessemer and non-Bessemer ores. The Cuyuna Range produces mainly low-manganese brown ore and high-manganese black ores, with some iron ore. The Vermilion Range yields mainly Bessemer and non-Bessemer iron ore, with some hard or lump ore that finds use in the open hearth. Open-pit mining is limited to the Mesabi and Cuyuna Ranges but underground mining is done on all three. The choice of mining methods is determined by the relative economics of overburden-removal and shaft-mining costs. Stripping Practice Common practice has been to remove the bulk of the overburden during the winter season and to mine during the summer, In- the present emergency many operators are forced to forego the economies attained by year-round utilization of paper. and to equip for, and carry on, stripping and mining simultaneously. In the normal years or lean years to come, most properties probably will be overequipped and high depreciation charges Will have to be absorbed.

Experimental data is given for several natural minerals on the load required for the fracture of single specimens over a very wide size range. The experimental results are compared with published data, such as for coal specimens from 30 to 64 in. in size. Correlations of the specific energy (per unit mass) required for fracture with specimen size are given as functions of specimen shape and the experimentally observed load-size relationships. These correlations are discussed with reference to comminution theory. Comminution, through compression or impact, can result only if sufficient force, or energy, is applied to a specimen of a given size. The relation of specimen size to force requirements has not been adequately considered previously. For single particle fracture, it was previously shown 1 that the specific energy (energy, e, per unit mass, M) at fracture of single glass spheres was inversely proportional to the product size modulus, k, as indicated in the equation: e/M = C/k [1] This was found true not only for numerous glass specimens of the same nominal size but was true for all nominal sizes tested from 1/8 to 1 in. Also, it was observed that the smaller spheres required a greater specific energy at fracture than the larger spheres and consequently had a smaller product size modulus. However, the relationship giving the required fracture energy as a function of specimen size was not further elaborated upon. This paper will extend the development of the feed size effect on specific fracture energy for brittle materials. SPECIFIC ENERGY-FEED SlZE RELATIONSHIPS FROM PREVIOUS DATA For the particular glass spheres tested in the previously described experiments,' it can be shown, as on Fig. 1, that the specific energy varied inversely as the 4/3 power approximately of the feed size, F, in the span of nominal sizes ranging from 1/8 to 1 in. The load at which a 3-in. diam glass sphere (a crystal gazer's ball) was broken was within the range predicted by an extrapolation of this energy-feed size relationship.
