Toward hot hydrochloric acid, the usual order of reactivities of the common copper sulfide and associated minerals is reversed, and the rates of H2S formation vary as [ ]. The iron component of chalcopyrite and bornite reports to the solution as ferrous chloride, while pyrite remains essentially unreacted. If a pressure of H2S is maintained in the reactor, copper solubilization is suppressed, and the primary copper sulfides are converted to finely divided secondary sulfides (principally covellite). The HCl leach reside then consists mainly of covellite, pyrite and acid-insoluble gangue. Copper can be selectively leached from this upgraded concentrate to yield a clean, strong copper sulfate solution for direct electrowinning. Preliminary analysis indicates competitive economics with respect to established hydrometallurgical processes. Other concentrate treatments based on an initial HC1 leach are proposed and relative advantages compared. The common denominator of the major process routes considered is the requirement to regenerate HC1 from an FeC12 solution. Five distinct concentrate compositions were employed in the experimental study, which included some attention to the fates of selected minor constituents of the copper concentrate, especially gold, silver, molybdenum, arsenic and selenium. The effect of small additions of silver on the actiziity of zinc in dilute solution with molten bismuth has been determined ill the range 450° to 650°C. Experimental measurements were made in a multi-electrode galvanic cell. All zinc activities showed large positive deviations from Raoult's Law. The results are expressed in terms of the interaction parameter EJ, as defined by Wagner. In the binary Zn-Bi system, Henry's Law was followed at zinc concentrations below 5 mol pct, thus indicating that the binary or self-interaction parameter of zinc in bismuth is essentially zero. Dealy and Pehlke1 have summarized the basis for interaction relations, discussed some theoretical implications, and presented a compilation of interaction parameters calculated for molten nonferrous alloys from stant ranged from 2.43 at 650°C to 3.96 at 450°C. The binary zinc activities were consistent with published data for higher zinc concentrations . The ternary interaction parameter ranged from -1.90 at 650°C to -3.30 at 450° C, varying linearly with the reciprocal of the absolute temperature. The negative value for the parameter reflects the fact that addition of silver decreases the activity of zinc in solution with bismuth. data available in the literature. Most of the data were for two-component systems from which only the self-interactions, Ei, could be calculated. Concentration ranges were often such that a considerable extrapolation was required for calculations at lnfinite dilution. The data for ternary systems were quite limited and often unavailable in suitable systematic fashion—thus few values of the parameter e| could be obtained. The byproduct coke oven is the most important artificial source of fuels for metals melting. Its products are solid, liquid, and gaseous in form. The amount of coke and primary byproducts obtained per ton of coal varies with the nature of the coal. The following represents the results obtained in many plants: Metallurgical coke (over 3/4 in.).............................. 69 per cent. of coal Domestic coke (1/2 to 3/4 in.)................................ 2 per cent. of coal Breeze (under 1/2 in.)...................................... 4 per cent. of coal Surplus gas, cubic feet per net ton........................... 6600 Gas for heating ovens, cubic feet per net tor i................. 4400 Tar, gallons per net ton.................................... 9 Ammonium sulfate, pounds per net ton....................... 25 Benzols, gallolls per net ton................................. 4 All of these products, except ammonium sulfate, have important fuel value. Part or all of the metallurgical coke may be crushed or screened to furnish additional domestic coke. If producer gas is used, there will be a surplus of 11,000 cu. ft. of coke-oven gas per net ton of coal. The use of coke in the metallurgical industries has been retarded by the mental attitude of writers who disregard the dependence of coke quality on the conditions of its manufacture. Terms like "byproduct coke," ('beehive coke," "48-hour coke," and "72-hour coke" are only generally descriptive and tell nothing of the coke quality. For example, one writeri stated that in brass-foundry practice, Connellsville coke is considered rnuch superior to byproduct coke on account of the high sulfur content of the latter. Another2 says, "At equal prices for hard Connellsville coke and for byproduct coke at the foundry door, the hard coke is unquestionably cheaper. It will melt more metal per ton than the byproduct coke and requires less labor, as the byproduct coke is less dense and burns faster, thus requiring more frequent firing." A little study of the conditions under which coke is manufactured will show the error in making general statements like these. In most instances the fluids produced from underground reservoirs have been described as they appear at the surface, and usually it has not been necessary to distinguish between surface and reservoir phases. More recently it has become imperative to recognize the fact that changes in phase may occur between the reservoir and the receiving unit. The simple terminology of "wet" and "dry" gases and "crude petroleum oil" served our needs fairly well in the shallow, low-temperature and low-pressure fields. It has been left to the legislatures, regulatory commissions, and courts to decide whether a field is or was a gas field, an oil field, or both. This they have done by direct definition and also by implication. For example, in Texas:' (d) The term "gas well" is any well (a) which produces natural gas not associated or blended with crude petroleum oil at the time of production, or (b) which produces more than one hundred thousand (100,000) cubic feet of natural gas to each barrel of crude petroleum oil from the same producing horizon, or (c) which produces natural gas from a formation or producing horizon productive of gas only encountered in a well bore through which crude petroleum oil is also produced through the inside of another string of casing. (e) The term "oil well" is any well which produces one (1) barrel or more of crude petroleum oil to each one hundred thousand (100,000) cubic feet of natural gas. In the state of Louisiana, the same general result is achieved largely by the following paragraph :* Wells producing both oil and gas shall not waste or blow into the air an amount of gas of more value at three cents per thousand cubic feet, than the market value of the oil recovered. The Commissioner of Conservation shall allow a reasonable time to determine the status of any well. A hydrogen peroxide precipitate process has been adopted by Atlas Minerals for the recovery of uranium oxides from sodium chloride strip solutions. Adoption of the process was based on laboratory and plant tests comparing hydrogen peroxide with other precipitants. Plant operation has demonstrated that the hydrogen peroxide process consistently yields uranium concentrates of high purity and barrens of low uranium content. Increased U3O8 concentration in the product, reduced levels of impurities which incur penalties, and higher product density have produced economic advantages.

LARGEST known fluorspar deposits in the world are mined in southern Illinois (Hardin County), and northwestern Kentucky (Crittenden County). Colorado, New Mexico, Montana, and Utah are the principal western sources in the U. S. Rosiclare Fluorspar District Hardin County, Illinois The Rosiclare area is located in the southern part of Hardin County on the Ohio River where the Illinois Central Rd. branch line terminates and provides transportation. Fluorspar has been mined commercially in this area since 1870. Aluminum Co. of America and Rosiclare Lead & Fluorspar Co. are the two major producers in this area. Ozark-Mahoning Co. operates a concentrating plant in Rosiclare but the bulk of its ore is mined near the town of Cave-in-Rock.

AT Butte, successive zones of sericitized and argillized quartz monzonite occur around every ore-bearing fracture regardless of its size, attitude, or relative age. The two types of alteration always occupy the same relative positions; sericite adjacent to the ore-bearing vein, clay minerals always between the sericitized rock and fresh quartz monzonite, except where overlap of alteration effects between adjacent fissures has eliminated the lower grade mineralogical products, as is the case in much of Butte's Central zone of pervasive sericitization. As long as active circulation continued in the channel, each zone migrated away from the fissure, that is, it grew at its outer edge and simultaneously receded at its veinward edge because of encroachment by the next innermost zone. The different mineralogical and chemical responses within the wall rocks to the attack by the ore fluid are dependent not on a drastic about-face change of composition of the fluid in the channel relative to its ability to alter the quartz monzonite but on continuously varying conditions of physico-chemical environment within the wall rock outwardly from the vein.

The object of this paper is to show that many of the important phenomena of metals and alloys are due to the facts that, at some stage, metals and alloys, or some of their constituents, are in a colloidal state and that a portion of the metal or alloy tends to remain in this state. The so-called amorphous phase in pure metals is an isocolloid, consisting of colloidal groups of metal molecules that may be dispersed in still more finely subdivided metal; these colloidal particles are not truly amorphous, but may consist, in part, if not entirely, of ultramicroscopic crystals; as a result the expressions amorphous phase and amorphous theory might he replaced by the expressions colloidal phase and colloidal theory. Any substance is in the colloidal state when the constituent particles consist of molecular or atomic groups, whose size varies approximately from about 100 down to about 5pp, that is from just below the limit of microscopic resolvability to the dimensions commonly ascribed to the larger molecules. Colloidality involves no assumption as to the shape, internal structure, or orientation of the colloidal particles; size alone is the critical factor. A colloidal system may therefore contain crystalline groups, or amorphous groups (non-crystalline, random or haphazard clusters), or a mixture of the two. All colloids consist of at least two phases, the subdivided substance, or dispersed phase, and the substance into which this is subdivided, the dispersion medium. It is not necessary that there be any chemical difference between the dispersed phase and the dispersion medium. As molecular forces are extremely powerful, their application may produce marked changes in the physical properties of metals. It is doubtful whether metal in the interior, especially of large masses, possesses the same properties as that on or near the surface, which alone is open to inspection.

THE fundamental problem concerning the fracture of both crystalline and noncrystalline solids is the divergence between the actual and the theoretically computed fracture stresses; the stress required for fracture, computed from the forces between atoms, is many times that actually observed with commercially available materials. Computations have been made1, 2 indicating that the theoretical fracture stress should be from 100 to 1000 times that actually observed. There are other incidental problems that have arisen, perhaps the most important of which is the problem of size effect often observed in the measurement of the fracture stress of non-metallic solids, such as glass. Another effect concerns the relation between deformation and the stress required for fracture. Experiments recently made with pearlitic steels indicate that the tensile fracture stress increases with increasing tensile deformation and decreases with increasing prior compressive deformation. This marked anisotropy of the effect of deformation on the fracture stress is in contrast with the essential isotropy of the flow stress. Early experiments on rock salt crystals by Joffé, et a13 have illustrated the effect of tensile strain in increasing the tensile stress required for fracture. A consistent theory must be constructed that will explain not only the divergence of the measured fracture stress from the theoretical value, the size effect, and the effect of deformation; but will also explain and predict the effects of combined stress, of temperature, of strain rate, and of metallurgical structure. With respect to this last variable, it has now been relatively well established that the carbide particle is the element of structure controlling the fracture of steels. In steels carbide particles vary in shape from plates to spheroids. It has been found that not only does the magnitude of the fracture stress depend upon the size and shape of these particles, but also its dependence upon strain is affected by changes in shape and size of the particles. The precipitate resulting from the age hardening of duralumin also modifies the fracture stress of this alloy. Nonmetallic inclusions greatly lower the fracture stress of all metals. The magnitude of the lowering depends on the size and shape of the included particles. In glass, the major source of the low fracture stress has been fairly conclusively demonstrated by Griffith4 to arise from real flaws or cracks present in the material. He showed that the stress concentration at the end of a defect was of sufficient magnitude to raise the stress at this location to a value comparable with the theoretical strength of the material. If the cracks were reduced in size, Griffith showed that the observed fracture strength increased by virtue of the decrease in stress concentration. He also pointed out that cracks disposed perpendicularly to the applied tensile stress would be more effective in lowering the fracture

THE object of this paper is to record and tabulate the data and field observations obtained by the writers and their associates during 10 years of intensive study of lead-zinc deposits in the Cretaceous limestone areas in Northern Mexico, particularly in mines owned by the Cia. Minera de Peñoles, S. A. At the El Paso meeting of the Institute in October, 1930, J. G. Barry made the suggestion that a committee be appointed to correlate the ideas and theories which have been put forth by the numerous engineers and geologists who, during recent years, have made a study of the ore deposits in the area under consideration. The first step in a work of this nature would be to record all of the observed facts, and these facts would have to be accepted by those who attempted to formulate a theory of ore deposition. It is with this idea in mind that the writers have described as accurately as possible the actual, observed facts pertaining to the occurrence of the lead-zinc ores in dolomites or dolomitic horizons. By most writers the term "dolomite," is loosely used to designate magnesium-bearing limestones, regardless of the percentage of MgO present. Since no, true dolomites exist in the areas to be described, we shall also loosely use the terms dolomite or dolomitic limestone to designate those beds having a magnesia content of 5 per cent MgO or more. For a number of years the writers have been impressed with the fact that in areas where dolomite beds occur a large percentage of the lead ore is found in these beds, in spite of the fact that such beds may be overlain or underlain by pure limestone, which one would assume to be just as favorable for replacement as the dolomite, if not more 'so on account of its being more soluble in acid solutions than the dolomite. It is true that in some limestone areas, such as the Erupcion-Ahumada districts, Chihuahua, and Providencia, Zacatecas, where no dolomite beds have been found, large tonnages of lead ores have been mined. ONE of the advantages presented by electric drive in many classes of work is the ease with which the electric motor can be controlled automatically. In a large number of cases certain features of the control are automatic-for example, the rate of acceleration may be limited automatically or the equipment may be stopped automatically at the limit of travel-but the equipment is started and ordinarily is stopped by hand. . In other cases the motion of the machinery is utilized to start, control the: speed, and stop the motor automatically, independently of any operator. A considerable proportion of the large mine hoists now in use have certain automatic features, particularly protective devices against over-winding, and, in some classes of electric hoists, devices for preventing excessive acceleration or retardation. The large automatic hoists discussed in this paper, however, are completely automatic, i.e., capable of snaking their trips without the presence of an operator at the control levers. According to circumstances, various advantages may be obtained by automatic control, chief of which are decreased power consumption', increased precision and safety of operation, and decreased, cost of attendance. The first step in the analysis of a prospective automatic mine hoist is to determine whether automatic operation is feasible at all. If men are to be hoisted, or levels changed, the attention of an operator is required for these purposes; but tinder some conditions it may be entirely practicable and advantageous to build the equipment so that, while provision is made for hoisting mien or changing levels, ore can be hoisted automatically from, any one level. If, however, an operator's attention is required every few minutes for changing levels, handling men or drills, or other work requiring hand control, it is obvious that automatic operation between times will not be of any, practical benefit.

The purification of iron ores by means of hand magnets dates back more than 100 years. The first record in the United States Patent Office of a machine for the magnetic separation of ores shows that on Feb. 20, 1849, U.S. Patent 6121 was issued to Ransom Cook for improvement in electromagnetic ore separators. The patent covered the use of a revolving cylinder, or drum, with poles of electromagnets in its periphery for the purpose of separating magnetic oxide of iron from substances with which it might be associated, by causing the electrornagnets when revolving as component parts of the cylinder to be successively charged to take up the ore and discharged to part with it. Since this patent was issued the science and technique of magnetism have advanced more than most other fields of endeavor. The development of electrical machinery has required and obtained better and better magnetic materials, and the science of applied magnetism is as completely and satisfactorily developed as any branch of physics. Nevertheless, the patent of Ransom Cook, issued in 1849, comes close to covering everything that is now being applied in magnetic separation. The cynic may conclude that this proves the uselessness of modern science and may point in confirmation to flotation, which has grown in a few years, practically without benefit of science, to be the most versatile and useful of concentration methods. On more careful study, however, it appears that an accurate determination of the magnetic properties of minerals and their amenability to control by mechanical and heat treatments has not heretofore been made. The first essential, therefore, in the design of improved magnetic separators has been missing. In spite of this hiatus in scientific data inventors have been busy, and patents are on file covering mineral separations by means of nearly all known magneto-mechanical effects. THE year just ended was the 50th anniversary of that first flight at Kittyhawk, N. C., in 1903. In this 50-year period the aviation industry made startling developments from flight distances of 120 ft-at snail's pace-to speeds of over 1300 mph and flights that circle the globe. And 1953 also was the 50th anniversary of the Utah Copper Co., the Father of our mass production porphyry copper ventures. How do developments in the mining industry stack up with the aviation industry? The mineral industry can be as proud of developments over the past 50 years as the aviation industry. Only for the developments of the mineral industry could aviation and other allied industries advance as they have. The year 1953 made its contribution to this progress, with the normal number of process and equipment developments and an abnormally high amount of activity in new plant capacity, particularly copper. Tonnages are on the increase and operating troubles are becoming more and more problems in materials handling and control. We're approaching molecular dissemination of ores with hydro and pyro methods coming to the front to take over where flotation leaves off.

The earliest mention of the sulphur deposits in what is now Culberson County, Texas, seems to be contained in " Explorations and Surveys for a Railroad Route from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean, United States War Department, 1853-54." Captain John Pope (he was not commissioned Captain until 1856) had charge of one of the divisions of the Survey. In his report on the geology of the route, William P. Blake noted the analysis of a greenish earthy powder from the bed of Delaware Creek, at the springs, which contained 18.28 per cent. of free sulphur. The report states: "From the chemical examination of the waters of the spring, by Dr. Booth, it appears that chloride of sodium is the principal solid ingredient, but considerable quantities of sulphide of sodium are present. ***** The waters from the springs examined by Dr. Booth were alkaline, but it is possible that some of the springs are acid; and in this case the precipitation of sulphur would ensue on the mixture of the acid waters with those charged with alkaline sulphurets and the origin of the deposits of sulphur would be thus explained." This is the first reference to the existence of sulphur in that region, the first mention of the character of the water found there and the first suggestion as to the origin of the deposits. The possibility of the existence of acid waters was confirmed by E. M. Skeats, nearly 50 years later.' In this publication, Skeats says that the water from the sulphur deposits in Section 11, Block 114, Township 6, contains 79.08 grains of free sillphuric acid per gallon. This locality is about 13 miles (21 km.) south . of Delaware Creek and about 35 miles (56 km.) east of the Delaware Springs. The next published reference to the existence of sulphur in Trans-Pecos. Texas is in the Pirst Annual Report of the Geological Survey of Texas, 1889, page 226, where W. H. von Streeruwitz mentions that sulphur is found in that region, but gives no further information. GENETIC correlations of the various types of Cheltenham fireclays found in Missouri have been the subject of several papers. The correlations usually have been attempted on the basis of stratigraphic and leaching patterns (Wheeler,18 1896; Allen, 1,2 1935 and 1937; McQueen,13 1943). Herold10 (1943), as well as Allen,l,2 has dealt at length with the mineral¬ogy of Missouri fireclays and postulates genetic relationships from min¬eralogical findings. Both researchers cite kaolinite as the primary clay mineral of the Cheltenham formation and suggest that differences in physical proper¬ties are due to clay mineral impurities such as halloysite or illite (not recog¬nized by the name "illite" at the time of Allen's papers). By ascribing the differences to impurities, it is possible to use weathering as the only major alteration factor. This paper seeks to probe still farther into the clay mineral composition of the Cheltenham formation and to show thereby that the mineralogical differ¬ences that have been found to exist within the "kaolinite" component of the Cheltenham fireclay may alter somewhat the previously held theories of diagenesis. Two Missouri fireclays, which have been rather thoroughly investigated, were chosen for comparison of genetic relationship to clay mineral content. One is a typical plastic fireclay of the middle Cheltenham (McQueen's classification13) obtained at Mexico, Audrian County, Missouri, from a large open pit operated by the A. P. Green Fire Brick Co. The other-a typical hard flint fireclay-was obtained from a pocket deposit in southwestern Mont¬gomery County, Missouri.

THIS paper will be confined to the treatment of methods as applied in the laboratory of the Boston and Montana Reduction Department of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. at Great Falls, Mont. As the electrolytic plant of this company operates at a current density of approximately 35 to 40 amperes per square foot when running up to capacity, the arsenic and antimony content of the anodes delivered to the, plant is of considerable importance as bearing on the purity of the refined cathodes turned out. Owing to the rather high relative percentage of antimony, it has always been the custom to determine antimony as well as arsenic in all forms of copper. Thus, anodes have been analyzed in which the antimony was about equal to the arsenic although the average shows about 2 parts of arsenic to 1 of antimony. In the refined copper the relative proportions of the two impurities vary considerably, but probably in the average are about equal. In this latter case, the percentage of the two is so small that ordinarily no attempt is made to separate them, the report of analysis showing percentage of As and Sb combined. Although rapid and exceedingly accurate determinations of arsenic may be made by means of various distillation schemes, the determination of antimony, either by itself or together with arsenic, has always been more or less cumbersome and has required a considerable amount of time. By the methods, details of which follow, the determination of arsenic and antimony, either separated as in the case of anodes or together in case of refined copper, is accomplished in 24 hr. from the time the sample is received by the chemist.

The year 1927 witnessed numerous developments of significance in California. The State's shut-in production increased from an average of 58,000 bbl. daily in January to a maximum of 93,000 bbl. daily in August, and a total of about 25,000,000 bbl. was withheld from the market during the year. This not only lessened the effect of large production at Hunt-ington Beach, Seal Beach and Alamitos Heights, but also was a most effective conservation move. Since 1922, it is estimated that approximately 100,000,000 bbl. of oil that would otherwise have been produced have been held in the ground. I. Outstanding Field Developments of 19271 1. Production increased from about 10,000 bbl. daily in January, to a peak of 66,000 bbl. in June. Huntington Beach finished the year 1926 with a production of 102,000 bbl. daily, which declined to 60,000 bbl. by the end of 1927. Due to production in these three areas and the tempering effect of shutting in numerous wells, the California production curve for 1927 was held at a fairly even level. MINERALS used primarily for personal adornment and decorative purposes are called precious stones. To be so prized, the stones must possess beauty of color, must not be too common, and must be hard enough to withstand ordinary wear. If transparent, they must have brilliancy and fire. Almost one hundred minerals have been used as precious stones, the noble gems being the diamond, emerald, ruby, and sapphire; pearls are frequently included by courtesy. These gem stones, however, are sometimes equaled in beauty by fine opals, aquamarines, ourmalines, spinels, chrysoberyls (both cat's-eye and alexandrite), and spodumenes (hiddenite and kunzite). The Greeks, Romans, and medieval Europeans grouped together gem stones according to color and degree of transparency, and only as the niceties of mineralogy began to be known, about a century ago, was it realized how many different minerals have the beauty required of gem stones.
