IN an investigation of the rolling and recrystalliz-ing textures obtained from single crystals of Si-Fe, Koh and Dunn included specimens in the (111) [lie] orientation.1,2 This note reports some additional results obtained on samples of this orientation set aside for further study. After, primary recrystallization longer annealing treatments at 980°C produced only normal grain growth; after 16 hr at 980°C the largest grains were approximately 0.010 to 0.020 in. in diam. The orientations of 13 of the larger grains were found by the transmission Laue method. The unidentified (110) poles of these grains have been added to the (110) pole figure obtained after primary recrystallization2 to give the plot shown in Fig. 1. When grain identifications are also included, such a plot reveals the following. Two orientations agree almost exactly with the peak pole ,density positions of component B of the primary recrystallization texture, one with component A, and one with component C. All the remaining orientations except one have (110) poles near weaker and unidentified pole density peaks. In fact, the correlation is good enough for an identification of eight components. Previously only components A, B, and C were certain. The results are perhaps even more informative when combined with the (110) pole figure of the cold-rolled crystal to give the plot shown in Fig. 2. Each of the 13 orientations is identified and uniquely determined by selecting two (110) poles per crystal, which are 90" apart. The plot shows that every grain of the 13, except grain 6, has a (110) pole in common with a (110) pole concentration of the cold-rolled crystal. The orientation relationship with the cold-rolled orientation may be expressed as approximately 25" rotations about <110> axes, which is in agreement with the results found for coarse-grained primary recrystallization.2 If primary recrystallization had occurred according to the <110> rule without preference, there would have been 12 components. Actually our limited data reveals nine of the possible 12. The integrated pole figure also shows preferences among them, since three are considerably stronger than the rest. In addition to the above direct information, the following conclusions may be drawn. Primary recrystallization of the (111) [110] cold-rolled crystal produces a limited number of weak and strong components with the larger than average primary grains from these components related to the cold-rolled crystal by 25° <110> relationships. In arriving at this conclusion of limited orientations the (111) [110] orientation has to be ruled out as a source of large primaries for two reasons. First, growth in this orientation was not observed, despite an expected high grain boundary mobility (due to its 25" <110> relationship with every component of the texture). Secondly, primary recrystallization usually produces grains in new orientations, particularly in a single orientation matrix; but (111) [110] is not new. Other orientations besides those of the <110> type may be considered unlikely, of course, because the <110> relationship holds quite well for primary recrystallization2 and should produce the large primaries. ALTHOUGH the kinetics of the atmospheric oxidation of tin have been studied,1-3 the kinetics in pure oxygen have not been reported. This note presents some results of the kinetics of the oxidation of tin foil in pure oxygen. The tin foil used in this investigation was 99.78 pct pure, the two major impurities being Pb (0.17 pct) and Sb (0.024 pct). The foil was degreased and air-dried prior to oxidation. The air-formed film was estimated by coulometric reduction4 of the surface oxides to be about 25A. The samples, which were in strip form and had a total geometric surface area of about 300 sq cm, were first evacuated at room temperature in an oxidation bulb to 1 X 10 -5 mm Hg and subsequently degassed for 1 hr at the temperature of the experiment. Spectroscopically pure oxygen was then introduced into the bulb. The rates of oxidation were measured by following the rate of pressure change due to oxygen consumption in a closed system, the volume of which was sufficiently large so that the pressure change during an experiment was 10 to 15 per cent of the total pressure. An oil-mercury manometer,5 with a sensitivity of 3 X x mm Hg (which corresponds approximately to 5 X 10 -7 gm of oxygen) was used to measure the pressure change. The oxidation bulb was heated by an oil-bath and controlled to within -10.3 C. The reproducibility of the rates was good, as determined by the coincidence of rates at 190oC for duplicate experiments. Fig. 1 shows the oxidation curves in the temperature range 168 to 211.5oC at 8 mm Hg pressure. The effect of pressure on the rate of oxidation at 190°C is also shown. The rate of oxidation was not markedly affected by changes in pressure in the range 4 to 9 mm Hg, except perhaps at the lowest pressure, 4 mm Hg, where after about 70 min there appeared to be a decline in the rate, as compared with the rate at the higher pressures. At the lower tem- perature, 168oC, and for short reaction times, it is difficult to distinguish between a linear relationship and a slight curvature in the oxidation rate. However, for longer times, there was a somewhat larger indication of curvature. The samples after oxidation were gold-colored in appearance. The oxide that was formed at 170°C was identified as a-SnO by reflection electron diffraction. This is in agreement with results obtained by other workers.6, 7 The rate data best fitted the logarithmic-oxidation rate law, w = K1n ln(1 + -t/to) [1] where w is the weight of oxygen consumed, t is the time, and K In, and to are constants. IN cleaning coal it has long been recognized that methods which give excellent results for the coarser sizes may give poor or even no cleaning for the finer sizes. Effective cleaning of the fines, therefore, is usually a separate and distinct problem. For many years the problem of fines was considered of relatively minor importance. Now there is growing interest in methods of cleaning the fine sizes of coal because: 1. There are more fines. Increasing mechanization and the adoption of full seam mining methods have resulted in the production of a greater percentage of smaller particles than were produced by hand loading methods. 2. The fines have deteriorated in quality. The same causes that have led to increased quantity have also operated to decrease quality through greater contamination with slate, rock, and other diluents. 3. The fines have become more valuable. When coal was comparatively cheap, loss of the finer sizes was tolerated but, with the rapid increase in the cost of mining coal, it has become imperative that the maximum amount of clean coal be recovered from the mixture of coal and rock delivered to the tipple. 4. In many cases, the fines have become a stream pollution problem. Increasing governmental activity and legislation to prevent stream pollution often have made it necessary to retain the fine material which formerly was permitted to escape with the washer effluent into flowing streams. The Sloss-Sheffield Steel and Iron Co. operates four coal mines, all within a 20-mile radius of Birmingham, Ala., with a total annual production of 1,-250,000 tons of washed coal. Three of these mines are in the Mary Lee seam and one in the Jefferson seam. Although some steam and domestic coals are produced, the major portion of the coal is used to make coke for blast furnace operation. Fine coal is desirable for coking, and all the coal so used by Sloss is crushed to 1/4 in. Therefore, there is no problem of an outlet for even the finest sizes of coal. Since the coal is used for metallurgical purposes, low ash is of greater importance than would be the case if it were used for steam generation or domestic heating. Based on present blast furnace practice at Sloss, it is calculated that each percentage of ash in the coal carries a penalty of $0.22 per ton of coal. Thus there is a considerable margin for operating costs in a fine coal cleaning method that will result in materially lowering the ash content of the cleaned coal. Development of Fine Coal Cleaning Problem In 1942 Sloss reopened its Bessie mine and constructed at this location a new preparation plant to clean 11/4 in. x 0 coal from the Mary Lee seam.

In an earlier paper1 one of the authors called attention to the significance of the relative free energies of grain boundaries and interphase boundaries in alloys in determining the shape and distribution of micro-constituents. The ratio of the interphase and inter-crystalline boundary energies (that is, —?12, where ?12 is the energy of the interface between a crystal of phase 1 and a crystal of phase 2, and ?11 is the energy of the boundary between two crystals of phase 1) will be denoted by F. It is this ratio that determines, by the simple triangle of forces relation, the dihedral angle, ?, of phase 2 where it adjoins a boundary between two grains of phase 1. On a metallographic sample various angles are actually obtained because of the random orientation of the plane of observation, but the statistically most frequent angle is the true one. These basic principles were discussed in detail in the earlier paper. The experiments described below show the effect of both composition and temperature on ? and T for some alloys containing a liquid phase, and provide data on the rate of approach to the equilibrium angles in both solid and liquid phases. All the alloys were melted in a graphite crucible and cast into ingots 3/4 by 11/8 in. cross-section. Some of the aluminum alloys consisted of two immiscible liquids from which uniform castings could not be obtained. The amount of liquid phase varied locally to a considerable extent and the analyses were meaningless. Nevertheless, the composition of the liquid would not differ from that in an alloy of the intended gross composition, and the synthetic composition of the alloys was therefore used in considering the surface energy results. The ingots were given initial deformation by cold-rolling to 50 pct reduction, annealed, and given a second 50 pct reduction prior to cutting into small samples for heat treatment at the times and temperatures subsequently reported. The resulting micro-samples were carefully prepared metallographically and examined at magnifications of 650, 1280, or 2500. The objectives used were 21X, 0.40 NA (dry); 41X, 0.65 NA (dry); and 80X, 1.40 NA (oil emulsion). The appropriate angles were measured by rotation of the stage of a Bausch and Lomb metallograph to align the appropriate boundaries successively with a cross-hair in a micrometer eyepiece. About 250 angles were measured on each phase. Though the angles were read to 1°, the accuracy is probably not above 3°, because of uncertainty in setting the cross-hair tangent to the sometimes curved boundary. The corners of very small particles, particularly in early stages of adjustment after cold-rolling, were difficult to measure and the results were slightly dependent on the magnification used (compare Fig 1-C and 1-D). With particles of larger size and more nearly equilibrium shape, magnification made no difference (vide Fig 1-F and 1-G). • A new curriculum for combined liberal arts-engineering education has been announced by 6 middle western colleges. The plan involves three years of ;study at one of the 5 liberal arts colleges and two years and a summer of &apos;engineering work at Case; graduates receive both the A.B. and B.S. degrees. * A new kind of mining is being pioneered by a pest Virginia coal operator which enables four men to produce 800 tons of coal a day. The machine that makes this possible is a giant auger, 5 ft in diam and 100 ft long. Together with the carriage in which it is moved about, it weighs 60 tons. A mobile, but separate power plant of 1000 hp drives it. &apos; * The Sorel smelter, which will reduce Allard Lake titanium ores, will utilize five 6-electrode rectangular electric furnaces. Furnace hearth size will be about 18x50 ft, and the furnace will smelt about 300 tons of ore per day, producing 100 tons of iron and 130 tons of 70 pct Ti02 slag. The furnaces will be fed continuously by gravity from charge bins, and tap at intervals of 4 hr or more. Slag will be transferred to a high speed casting machine, using cast iron molds, then crushed for shipment to pigment producers. The iron will be treated to reduce its sulphur content to 0.03 to 0.05 pct, and then cast into small pigs or ingots for shipment to steel mills. • Flying of North Africa&apos;s first airborne mangetometer survey was completed this month, covering approximately 20,000 sq km in north central Tunisia for Gulf Exploration Co.&apos;s program there. Mapping was completed in less than 30 days. •Yore than 9000 employees of 11 electric companies are enrolled in a 6-hr program that successfully informs workers on the principles of the American economic system. The course is given by the Middle West Service Co. which claims that before and after employee opinion polls show that the course instilled a better understanding of free enterprise and consequently a favorable response to it. •According to a report issued by the American Geological Institute there will be 2865 graduates in geology, including advanced degrees from U.S. colleges in 1950. This supply of geologists compares with requirements for 1278 at the professional and subprofessional levels. The report contains a detailed statistical study of the supply and demand situation for geologists in the 1949-50 period. •The dark cloud of over-production in the bituminous coal industry has a silver lining, according to Natural Resources Notes. Closing marginal mines, mostly strip and truck mines, will result in lower average costs and higher quality of the coal still produced. The producers that will then constitute the industry will be properly equipped and adequately financed to carry forward an intensive campaign to holdd and increase the markets for bituminous coal. •A light, compact, highly reliable blasting machine which does not rely for its effectiveness on the operator&apos;s skill is being tested by the Army Engineers. Operating under all climatic conditions from -65 to 125F, the 50-cap machine consists of a springwound do generator and is waterproof.

IN carrying out experiments in metal-gas systems, it is often difficult to estimate how long a reaction period must be allowed for equilibration. This is especially true in systems for which the diffusion coefficient is not known. In an investigation of the Cr-O system, the necessary information was obtained in the way described subsequently. Two pieces of chromium sheet of different thicknesses were packed in mixed powders of chromium and Cr2O3 and sealed into an evacuated metal capsule by welding. Austenitic stainless steel proved suitable as a capsule material up to 1350°C and molybdenum at higher temperatures. The capsule then was heated at a specific temperature for a time sufficient to saturate with oxygen the thinner but not the thicker specimen. The time is readily estimated from a preliminary experiment if a sufficient thickness differential is chosen. Under these experimental conditions, the metal sheet is exposed to a partial pressure of oxygen equal to that of the dissociation pressure of the oxide and hence can become saturated with oxygen without developing any second phase. After cooling, both samples were analyzed for oxygen by the vacuum fusion technique. Assuming that the surface of the specimens is kept saturated with oxygen throughout the experiment, the diffusivity can be calculated by application of the appropriate solution to Fick&apos;s second law. This is most conveniently accomplished by use of a plot of mean fractional saturation (Cm-Co) / (Cs-Co) vs (Dt) ½/L as given by Darken,&apos; where t is time, L the half-thickness of the sheet, and D the diffusion coefficient. Cm, the mean concentration at time t, is given by the oxygen percentage in the thicker specimen; Cs, the constant surface concentration, is the oxygen percentage in the thinner specimen; Co is the oxygen content of the original chromium sheet. (Cm-Co) / (Cs-Co) is calculated and the corresponding (Dt) ½/L is read from the graph and D thereby calculated. By performing the experiment at two temperatures and plotting log D vs 1/T, the D for any temperature is established. (The activation energy for diffusion may be obtained from the slope of the line.) Once D is known as a function of temperature, it is a simple matter to estimate the correct reaction time for experiments with single specimens at other temperatures by equating (Dt) ½/L to its value for effective saturation. Darken&apos; points out that this is approximately unity. The solubility of oxygen in chromium, as determined from the thin samples at each temperature, proved to be approximately 0.03 pct at 1350°C and less at lower temperatures. Due to low solubility and to the known difficulties of the vacuum fusion method in this low range, the values obtained for D (5x10-0 sq cm per sec at 1350°C) are estimated to be correct only within an order of magnitude. Nevertheless, the method has proved useful in estimating reaction times. Its usefulness will be greater in metal-gas systems where the solubility is appreciable. A second function of the method is to permit the determination of diffusion coefficients in systems for which the conventional techniques are experimentally difficult or impossible.

IN 1937 the employees of the Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines Ltd., at Timmins, Ont., Canada, approached organized medicine for a plan to provide themselves and their families with a complete medical service including hospitalization. This approach was made because of two conditions: (1) the necessity for some organization whereby contributions could be made in instalments to offset the sudden and large expense connected with illness for which the average employee is not prepared, and (2) the need for a more cohesive quality of service to replace a contract practice then in vogue, which did not take care of the employee&apos;s family or dependents. In different parts of the United States and Canada similar plans were in force, not only for employed groups but for numbers of people in circumscribed areas. In Europe different countries had adopted various forms of health insurance plans. It then was no surprise that these employees as a group should ask for some similar plan. With the cooperation of the management, a plan was instituted. The plan has one object only-the provision of medical services, including the accessory services such as hospitalization, X-rays, nursing, and necessary drugs and medicines. It is not concerned with cash benefits, sickness and accident payments, or any form of monetary return as the result of illness, but is simply an organization to provide medical services and pay for them from a central fund. It is a nonprofit organization and the only shareholders are the employees and their families who contribute and who in turn receive services. The Hollinger plan is limited to the employees of the Hollinger mine, who live in Timmins and the immediate vicinity. At first, the membership was voluntary. In the third year, it was made a condition of employment, with the proviso that at the end of any Association financial year an employee may withdraw if he wishes to do so. After withdrawal, he cannot again become a member until the end of the next Association year, and then only by the payment of the back dues. This step was taken to ensure continuity, and to prevent employees from withdrawing when well and reentering when faced with impending illness or operations. The employee himself is subject to medical examination on application for employment, and if accepted is subject to further examination by a specialist in chest diseases under the Workmen&apos;s Compensation Board of Ontario. Thus it is possible to exclude those who have heart disease, tuberculosis, or other disabling conditions when first employed. Wives and families of employees are not subject to medical examination but other dependents of an employee-mother, father, or other relative-who are declared by the employee to be wholly dependent upon him must be examined. Most of today&apos;s open pits take the form of conical-shaped excavations in the relatively flat or undulating terrain surrounding them. Ore is usually hauled uphill from the pit bottom by truck, rail, or skip to crushing, beneficiation, railroad loading, and stockpiling facilities near the edge of the pit. There are, however, a few orebodies whose locations in mountainous terrain causes special problems that generate different technical solutions. LAMCO&apos;s 10.5 million metric tons per year high-grade iron mine in the Nimba Range in tropical Liberia is probably one of the most extreme of these exceptions (Fig. 1). At Nimba there is a 2,000-ft difference in elevation between the upper- most levels of the orebodies and the start of the railroad below at the foot of the mountain. Haulage to the crusher is usually downhill at grades of up to 12% dictated by the topography of the rugged terrain. Ore is transported from the crusher down the mountainside by a conveyor sys- tem 10,096 ft long, whose average grade is 18%. The belt is braked by asynchronous generators, feeding power into the local network. The original crusher must be relocated at a lower elevation outside the final pit limit to allow that part of the mountain on which it now stands to be excavated. HISTORY The LAMCO Joint Venture is owned 75% by the Liberian-American- Swedish Minerals Co. (LAMCO) and 25% by Bethlehem Steel Corp. LAMCO is comprised of a 50% interest by the Liberian Government and 50% interest by Liberian Iron Ore Ltd (Fig. 2). This joint venture was launched to develop the high-grade iron ore deposits of the Nimba Range.

The revolution in equipment for blasthole drilling, ore loading, and ore hauling has been so rapid over the last ten years that it has generated an important new profit potential in the mining industry. With the new high-capacity machinery now available, it is possible for a mining enterprise to earn a profit from larger and lower grade orebodies than ever before despite the ever-increasing burden of rising costs. Just what such equipment can accomplish when coupled with improved mining practice has been demonstrated with startling success at the No. 1 mine of Minerva Oil Co. near Cave-in-Rock in Hardin County, Ill. The No. 1 is an underground operation which has been producing fluorspar and zinc ores and concentrates continuously since 1944. A few years ago, when the mine neared the familiar cross-roads where rising costs, increasing tonnages, and relatively static product prices converge, company officials decided to bolster the operation with new mobile equipment. They chose three machines which proved so effective that output at the No. 1 doubled between 1963 and 1965,while costs dropped by about 40% in the same period.

DURING the spring of 1910 I visited a number of open-pit brown-coal mines and underground workings in the vicinity of Halle, Halberstadt, Leipsic, Cologne and Bonn. The notes which I took and the observations which I made at the time have been condensed and make up the principal part of this paper. Certain supplementary information has been taken from several sources which are given in the paper. The mining of brown coal is one of the important industries of Germany. The coal varies in color from dark brown to almost black and is soft like loam. Pieces of wood and strips of bark and, even parts of tree trunks are frequently encountered in the excavation although the coal for the most part consists of a pulverulent, more or less matted mass of small particles of vegetal matter. It is a product between peat and lignitic coal. An analysis, taken from Coal Resources of the World shows the approximate composition of the material: Moisture, 53.73 per cent.; ash, 4.98; fixed carbon, 18.08; volatile carbon, 23.31 per cent. The principal characteristic is the amount of moisture. This seldom runs less than 48 per cent. The ash is usually low and ranges from 5 to 10 per cent. The sulphur content is usually less than 0.5 per cent. The heating effect of the fuel ranges from 2,000 to 2,500 calories.

Selenium is found most frequently as an accessory mineral in the ores of lead, copper, and nickel, and is recoverable as a byproduct in the treatment of many of the ores of these metals. The geographic distribution of the selenium industry closely follows that of electrolytic copper, with the United States and Canada producing approximately 75% of the total output of the non-communist world. This situation is problem number one for selenium-its dependence upon the electrolytic refining of copper- for this byproduct source is not sufficiently flexible to permit a normal supply-demand balance. Furthermore, selenium has become a strategic material in short supply. Thus, new sources are being sought by both government and private interests. Although considerable attention has been given to this effort during the last few years, hardly any research has been published concerning the recovery of small amounts of selenium present in low-grade deposits. In such ores the metal occurs as native selenium or as selenides of iron, copper, silver, lead, and bismuth. In recent years, some native selenium (in both the gray and red form) and selenides, especially iron selenide (ferroselite), reportedly have been found in the sandstones of the Morrison formation near Grants. New Mexico. Similar occurrences have been reported in the Hagan coal basin, in Sandoval County, New Mexico. Samples from New Mexico ores have contained from a trace amount to as high as 0.425% Se. Some of the samples from uranium mines in the Grants area represent mixed ore and mill feed fur uranium reduction plants. In such cases, the selenium usually is reported as an impurity and is lost in the tailings. At present, no attempt is made to recover this waste metal.

In the present work, experiments determined the effect of the order-disorder reaction near the Fe,Al composition on the magnetic anisotropy and magnetostriction of single crystals: A material which is more difficult to magnetize in one direction than in another is anisotropic, that is, the ease with which ferromagnetic materials may be magnetized in different crystallographic directions determines the anisotropy. Two investigators have estimated the anisotropy of the aluminum iron alloys from poly-crystalline data;1,2 however, these estimates should not be considered to be reliable. Siege1 made two accurate measurements of the first anisotropy constant* from single crystals of 4.0 wt pct aluminum sotropy throughout the ferromagnetic aluminum iron system have been described. These results were obtained from single crystals which were slowly cooled and, hence, ordered near the Fe3Al composition.4 Magnetostriction is the change in length per unit length resulting from applying a magnetic field to a ferromagnetic material. For the purpose of this report, the saturation magnetostriction was measured. This is the maximum change in length per unit length resulting from an applied magnetic field large enough to saturate the material in a given direction. This magnetostriction has been determined for single crystals of the ferromagnetic aluminum-iron system.&apos; The crystals near Fe3Al were also ordered. During 1939 little of consequence happened in East and East Central Texas in the way of oil discoveries. At the end of the year, there were 47 oil and gas fields in the district. Twelve other fields, 11 oil and one gas, have been abandoned. The ranking fields in order of the number of completions for the year were East Texas, Talco, and Rodessa (Texas portion). There were 511 oil wells (distillate wells included), 32 gas wells, and 257 dry holes completed in the district. Exploration, Discoveries and Extensions During the year, 113 exploratory wells were drilled, the same number as in 1938; four oil fields and one gas-distillate field were discovered. Perhaps the most important discovery, which has been named Barron field, was that of M. Samuel et al., No. 1 Barron in Limestone County. The wells in this field are of the gas-distillate type. Other than the Talco and Sulphur Bluff fields, which produce oil from the Paluxy sand (Upper Trinity), this is the first field on the Corsicana-Mexia fault zone to obtain commercial production from deeper Trinity strata. This "pay" is the Petit lime of the Lower Glen Rose of the Trinity group. The four oil discoveries were: Redland, Angelina County; Bazette, Henderson County; Rowe and Baker, Henderson County; and Marion County Shallow in Marion County. It is believed that the Bazette field, Navarro County, represents an extension of the Flag Lake field. THE temperature coefficient of electrical resistance of pure metals is high and therefore the resistance increases rapidly with rising temperature. In 1871, Siemens suggested the use of this property as an accurate means of temperature determination. Owing to practical difficulties, particularly the contamination of the metal and consequent permanent change in its resistance and its resistance-temperature relation, this method fell into disrepute as a practical standard until revived later by Callendar and Griffiths, and subsequently by Holborn and Wien, all of whom showed that the earlier difficulties were not inherent in the method but incident to the mode of protection of the resistance coils. Following .the work of these investigators, the problem of temperature measurement by this means has been the subject of careful study and has now assumed an importance second only in practical adoption to the thermo-electric method. It is generally recognized, both here and in Europe, that the standard temperature scale should be the thermodynamic as it permits the evaluation of high temperatures on the basis of the radiation laws of Stefan and Bolzmann, of Rayleigh, and of Wien and Planck, on a scale consistent with that obtained by means of the gas thermometer at low temperatures. Lord Kelvin showed that only. a very small correction, amounting to about +0.7° at 1000° C.-almost within the limits of experimental errors-is necessary to adjust the constant-volume nitrogen thermometer to the ideal thermodynamic scale.

The ores now milled at the Midvale concentrator of the United States Smelting, Refining & Mining Co. come mostly from the company&apos;s mine in the Bingham district, about 18 miles west of Midvale. Custom ores from this same district and from other western mining districts are also milled at times. The Bingham ores consist of galena, pyrite, chalcopyrite, and sphalerite in a gangue of quartz, quartzite, limestone, and porphyry. The percentage of chalcopyrite is small, usually about 0.5 per cent., while the galena, pyrite, and sphalerite combined constitute about 60 per cent, of the total ore. These three minerals vary considerably in amount and, at times, all three are somewhat oxidized. The ores also contain gold and silver, the former being mostly in the pyrite while the latter is generally with the galena. The crystallization of the economic minerals varies from fairly coarse to extremely fine. The ores are carried to Midvale by the Bingham & Garfield and the Los Angeles & Salt Lake railroads or by the Denver & Rio Grande Western railroad, in 50-ton, steel, full dump cars. The milling problem is to recover the silver-bearing galena, the gold-bearing pyrite, and the chalcopyrite in a product suitable for the lead smelter and containing the least possible amount of gangue and sphalerite and then recover the sphalerite in a product suitable for a zinc smelter. The minerals are recovered partly by water concentration and partly by water concentration combined with electrostatic treatment. Gravity Concentrator The gravity concentrator has a capacity of about 465 tons in 24 hr. The mill buildings are of wood. The mill was built in 1905 to handle approximately 90 tons in 24 hr.; since that time several additions have been built and various changes have been made in the flow sheet. The last extension, which raised the capacity of the mill to its present level, was built in 1915. The additions to the mill building have not kept pace with

ABOUT fifty pages of Henry M. Howe&apos;s profound treatise, "The Metallography of Steel and Cast Iron," are devoted to twinning with special reference to the origin, nature and general significance of the Neumann bands in ferrite. Howe believed with Osmond and Cartaud1 that the Neumanns are mechanical twins and his careful observations leave no doubt that these straight-sided narrow bands habitually occur parallel to trapezohedral planes of form {211}. Attempt&apos;s to develop the structure of the bands by various methods so that their identity could be established beyond question have not been conspicuously successful. Howe thought that they deflected slip bands. Some of the etching figures which have been developed within and adjacent to Neumann bands support the contention that they are twins. A good example of this effect in ferrite containing 0.6 per cent. of nickel and 1.3 per cent. of phosphorus, originally due to Harnecker and Rassow,2 was reproduced in. the 1928 lecture before the Institute of Metals Division on twinning in metals.3 In this case, the sides of the figures might represent the traces of cubic planes laid bare by etching a properly oriented grain of ferrite, twinned along a plane of form {211}. Our own observations in this direction may be represented by Fig. 1 which shows in a deeply etched cavity in the boundary region between a Neumann band and the original crystal two small crystal surfaces which resemble the faces meeting at a reentrant angle in the simple cube twinned along a bisecting plane of form {211} as sketched in Fig. 2.

THE properties of the company lie within the Pachuca district, State of Hidalgo, Mexico, connected by three railway lines with Mexico City, 55 miles southwest, and by two lines with Vera Cruz, 250 miles southeast. The ores were formerly divided by sorting into two classes, smelting and milling, the former averaging about 2 oz. gold and 335 oz. silver, the latter 0.12 oz. gold and 23 oz. silver. The smelting ores were sold to custom plants, principally the American Smelting & Refining. Co. at Aguascalientes. The milling ores were treated by the patio process at the Guadalupe Hacienda, at Pachuca. This patio was probably the largest in existence at the time and continued in active operation up to March, 1910. In January, 1910, the mines and patio were sold to English interests, represented by Camp Bird Limited. Two new companies were formed, the Compañia de Santa Gertrudis, S. A., to operate the mines, and the Compañia Beneficiadora de Pachuca, S. A., to build and operate a custom cyanide milling plant. (Fig. 1.) GEOLOGY The historical geology of the Pachuca district is described by Fred J. Pope as follows: 1. The most recent sedimentary rocks in the district belong to the Cretaceous period. 2. The Cretaceous rocks were penetrated by large intrusions of ande-site (referred to hereafter as primary andesite) which occur as elliptical dome-shaped masses, striking northwest-southeast. These andesite bodies are from 8 to 15 miles long and from 6 to 10 miles wide. 3. A period of erosion during which the contour of the andesite domes was changed. 4. Andesite flows (secondary andesite) which rest unconformably on the primary andesites.
