The transfer of kinetic energy of translation into other forms of energy by impact is a fundamental process in most crushing and grinding operations. During and after the impact process the original source energy may be accounted for in any of the following possible forms: 1) Kinetic energy of translation of both the impacted and impacting objects. 2) Kinetic energy of vibration of the components of the impact system. 3) Potential energy as strain energy of the components of the system or in the form of residual stresses. 4) Heat generated by internal friction during plastic deformation or during damping of elastic waves. 5) New surface energy of fractured materials. At any instant during the impact process only the strain energy of the components of the system can contribute directly to the brittle fracture process. If fracture is the desired result, as in comminution, it would seem advantageous to choose or arrange the conditions of impact so that a maximum amount of the original kinetic energy could be converted to strain energy at some moment during a single impact. The present work deals with determination of these desirable conditions for a simple case of impact and application of the principles involved to general cases of impact.

From time immemorial the fissure-vein has been held the simplest type of ore-deposit. The prominence given to it by Cotta and his disciples, from their study of the mines of the Erzgebirge, is impressed upon technical literature; and, in consequence, the ores which carry the valuable metals have been supposed to occur mainly in fissures, cleaving the rocks in diverse directions, and the noblest type of vein has been deemed that which cut across the country independent of its structure, whether evidenced as bedding, foliation or cleavage, and which was identified with rents produced in the rocky crust of the earth. As so conceived, the vein was a fissure filled with ore, extending through the country for a varying distance, and continued downward to a depth more or less proportionate to its longitudinal extent. The vein-material was bounded by an encasement of rock, and those immediate surfaces which limited it on either aide were called " walls." These primary conceptions have become modified by the experience of modern mining in widely separated regions. The study of lode-formations has led to the recognition of notable departures from the supposed normal structure of the veins of Saxony and Cornwall, the two classic homes of early economic geology. Typically the walls of a vein are conceived as parallel rockplanes enclosing the ore; the upper one being called the " hanging-," and the lower the "foot-wall."* Walls are rarely alike. Even where a vein traverses a homogeneons formation, such as a massive crystalline rock, it is usually found that the surface which bounds it underneath

In a paper on the manufacture of artificial fuel, read at the Philadelphia meeting of February, 1878, I enumerated the difficulties which I had to overcome before succeeding in the mixing of coal-dust and clay, the compressing of the same mixture, and the water-proofing of the lumps. The drying of the lumps, after leaving the press, was the remaining difficulty, and it mas expected that a plan devised by Dr. Charles N. Cresson, of Philadelphia, would enable us to dry the fuel as rapidly as it was moulded, and that a continuous production could in that way be obtained. The company was reorganized. The works were purchased by the new company at an assignee's sale, and the oven was modified, according to Dr. Cresson's plan. Anticipating a possible failure, I had prepared a plan by which I expected to be able to demonstrate that anthracite coal dust nixed with pitch, could be manufactured with our present machinery slightly modified ; so that after all, if we were compelled to give up the attempt to make fuel for domestic use, there was a possibility of succeeding in the manufacture of a good steam-fuel. The plan suggested by Dr. Cresson for drying the pressed lumps of coal-dust cemented with clay, did not work as well as we expected. It enabled us to dry more fuel than we did before, but it could not be made to dry more than one half of the lumps produced by the press. The plan mas abandoned, and I was authorized to experiment with coal-dust and coal-tar pitch. The cement which is used in Europe to conglomerate coal-dust is usually dry pitch, which is prepared by separating from the tar, at a temperature of 572' Fahrenheit, the volatile matters which it contains. Some manufacturers, however, employ crude tar, others, a rich tar, which has been cleared of 25 per cent. of its volatile substances, by heating it to 392' Fahrenheit. But with common tar very weak fuels are obtained, which do riot burn well, and give out a strong smell and a great deal of smoke ; it is also necessary to subject them to a baking process, in order to solidify them, and to eliminate the more volatile of the materials contained. This operation of course requires a special plant, the cost of which increases sensibly the price of manufacture, without counting the products

AMONG the genetically interesting iron ores of the United States are those of the St. Francis Mountains near Ironton and Iron Mountain, Missouri. They are specular hematite in porphyry. The Iron Mountain and Shepherd Mountain deposits are generally spoken of as veins and those of Pilot Knob, Cedar Hill, and Russell Mountain as bedded deposits. Iron Mountain has produced nearly 4,000,000 tons of ore and Pilot Knob about 1,500,000 tons. The output of the other three localities has been insignificant. Pilot Knob is no longer worked as an iron mine, but the rock is now being crushed for use as road metal. Iron Mountain has continued as an active producer. In 1927, the property was acquired by the M. A. Hanna Co. and an extensive prospecting and exploration campaign was undertaken, so that the ultimate production of Iron Mountain will doubtless greatly exceed the figures mentioned. Previous Theories of Origin Descriptions of the deposits and theories of their origin have been concerned mainly with Iron Mountain and Pilot Knob, which represent the two contrasting types of occurrence. The Iron Mountain deposits have been considered of close magmatic origin by Whitney' in 18.54, Geijer2 in 1915, and Spurr3 in 1927. Whitney referred to them as of eruptive origin. Geijer considered them fissure fillings at magmatic temperatures. Spurr called them vein dikes formed from ore magma which was essentially fluid iron oxide. Schmidt4 in 1872 ascribed them to fissure filling by thermal chalybeate waters of meteoric origin. Nason5 in 1892 advanced essentially the same explanation. One of the best

IN drilling for water and oil to reasonable depths through the generally soft yielding clay and sand formation of the Coastal Plain of Texas, . Louisiana, and Mississippi, the rotating method of drilling was adopted, principally on account of the easy and quick penetration, and the low cost of the drilling plant. In favorable ground, free of heavy gravel and rock strata, as much as 1,000 ft. has been drilled in less than 36 hr., although such performances were of course rare. Hydraulic rotary drilling, or, as it is now called, rotary drilling, was used in the above States as early as 1880. The plant consisted of an ordinary derrick, a 25-h.p. boiler, a small hoist, a steam pump, and a water swivel with hose attachment, and an ordinary flat diamond-pointed bit. The successful drilling in of a phenomenal oil well by this process on Spindletop, near Beaumont, Texas, on Jan. 10, 1901, and the ascertained impracticability of drilling subsequent wells in the same locality by other methods (owing principally to heavy quicksand under pressure from below), brought rotary drilling into great prominence, practically to the exclusion of any other process throughout the Coastal Plain, and later on elsewhere. The method, as its name implies, involves the rotation of a pipe by means of machinery placed on the derrick floor. A drill bit attached to the lower end cuts a clearance for the drill pipe, with much the same motion and effect as an auger. Water forced through the drill pipe by means of a pump, and escaping through the bit, removes the cuttings and returns to the surface outside the drill pipe. In this manner the hole is kept open, permitting the drill stem to rotate freely. The pressure of the column of muddy water holds up the walls of the hole until it has been cased. Practically all the wells of the Gulf coast region, numbering nearly 10,000, have been drilled with this system. During the last five years its use has been extended to many other States and countries.

The lower cost of producing oil from naturally flowing wells compared with pro-luction costs accruing from artificial lifting methods has stimulated much research, rith the joint purpose of extending the natural flowing life of wells and of increas-ng the productivity of small wells. The iboratory investigation described herein was made to determine the effect of a lotted liner on the pressure gradient in the icinity of the wall of a flowing well. Flow estrictions caused by the liner induce nergy losses between the oil-bearing for-lation and the inside of the liner, which lay be reduced by improved liner design, nd thereby the flow capacity of wells may e increased. These losses have been evalu-ted for rectangular slots of different sizes, nd means are suggested for reducing them. The dearth of information concerning the ature of the flow of fluids from uncon-slidated sands through small openings in he walls of. pipes—as represented by the ow of oil from an oil sand into a slotted ner—is acknowledged. Although the bene-ts to be realized by operators through the se of optimum liners is just beginning to e recognized generally, Coberlyl in 1937 ointed out that the functioning of screen is is an important factor in the pro-uction of oil. From his study on the :lection of size of oil strings for wells in California, Parks2 concluded, in part, that the perforated section of the oil string deserves continued study, especially with respect to the selection of perforations. The growing use of gravel packing resulting from certain research findings lends even more significance to the problem of selecting optimum liners, as the application of these methods usually requires slotted liners or other kinds of perforated liners. The present study was made to obtain further information for the guidance of engineers and operators in selecting slotted liners and to develop a laboratory method that may be used in analyzing possible pressure conditions surrounding most types of perforated casings used in producing oil wells, so that the present inadequate fund of knowledge on this important subject may be expanded. Discussion of ProbleM At the beginning of the investigation the following assumptions were made regarding bottom-hole conditions of a producing oil well and the oil-sand reservoir it penetrates: (I) Conditions of steady-state flow exist, (') a a homogeneous liquid is being produced) (3) no contaminating material (such as drilling fluid) is present between the liner and the face of the oil-bearing sand, (4) the well is vertical and completely penetrates a horizontal sand stratum of uniform thickness occurring between two impermeable strata, and (5) the flow is wholly viscous. Greater depth of exploration drill holes and increasing cost of drilling have been principal factors in reviving interest on the Mar-quette Iron Range in controlled directional drill-hole deflection. This deflection is obtained by the application of the Hall-Row wedging technique. Modifications were made in the technique and equipment in the effort to simplify and strengthen the procedure. The practice is similar in many respects to the oil well type of deflection with a whipstock. Introduction The deflection of diamond drill holes by wedging was a widespread practice in Canada, South Africa and the Lake Superior District as early as 1907 to 1920. Several basic schemes were used, with local variations.' The deflecting wedge assembly was the idea of Mr. Welldon and Mr. Payne-Gallwey operating under the supervision of Mr. William Gallagher of Johannesburg, South Africa. All schemes employed some means of plugging the old hole. A footpiece of various styles was placed in the hole on the plug. In some methods, the orientation of this piece was determined before placing the deflecting wedge. Some techniques permitted continuing the hole the same size after wedging, while others necessitated a size reduction. Interest in wedging diamond drill holes in the Lake Superior District waned after 1920. The Hall-Row patented system for deflecting holes was developed in Canada about 1918.2 Interest centers on the wedging process for the following applications: 1. Maintaining a given course and inclination of the drill hole. 2. By passing an obstruction in a drill hole. 3. Resampling an ore body. 4. Exploring an area overlain by surface conditions not favorable to drilling. During the period of 1913 to 1920, The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. used the wedging technique under a variety of conditions. In general, the practice was not applicable again until 1946. Meanwhile the Hall-Row system of drill-hole deflection survived years of application as the best technique available. In the intervening years, our depth of exploration has increased as well as the overall cost of drilling. As exploration becomes deeper, there is the possible economy of cutting the ore body at a moderate distance from the parent hole without redrilling from surface. Thus a branch hole started near the mid-point of a deep hole can reach the ore horizon at a considerable offset from the parent hole. This permits a greater interval between surface drill holes as drilling becomes deeper. Our interest revived in the subject and a wedging program was initiated. One of the outstanding achievements in connection with this country's war efforts has been the ability of our mining industry to supply from domestic sources many of the minerals of strategic importance that formerly were obtained principally from abroad. In order to meet the war-born demands for these scarce minerals, it has frequently been necessary to develop special methods for treating ores and waste products hitherto considered too lowgrade to be workable; and to improve the efficiency of older beneficiation processes. Important in this respect have been the recent technological advances in the field of froth flotation of nonsulphide minerals. Because of the refractory nature of many of these domestic ores, and, in many cases, the limited available technical data regarding their treatment, much research work has been necessary. The following examples describe the procedures and reagents used, and the results obtained, in certain laboratory flotation investigations conducted by American Cyanamid Company's engineers at the Cyanamid Ore Dressing Laboratory on ores containing such minerals as scheelite, manganese oxides and carbonate, ilmen-ite, brookite, kyanite, garnet, spodumene, mica, feldspar, celestite, fluorite, chromite, corundum, and cassiterite. In presenting these data, we wish to point out that many of the minerals listed have previously been tested, and their amenability to flotation reported, by other investigators—notably those of the United States Bureau of Mines. In some instances the procedures and reagents used in the treatment of some of the following described ores follow rather well-established lines, and with one or two exceptions, the reagents used were well known. However, many of the ores tested did not respond well to simple conventional procedures and it was necessary to adopt special methods of conditioning and desliming, reversal of the usual order of floatability of some of the minerals, multiple cleaning, etc., in order to secure separations. Except where otherwise noted, all numbered and trade-marked reagents mentioned in this paper are marketed by the American Cyanamid Co. or the American Cyanamid and Chemical Corporation. Tungsten ORes Tungsten minerals, vitally important in the war industries of the United States, rank high in the list of those we formerly had to import in order to supply our needs. Most of our domestic ores of tungsten contain scheelite as the valuable mineral. Today there are in the neighborhood of twelve tungsten operations in this country where flotation is used as the main or accessory form of benefication. It has, of Course, been known for some time that scheelite and other tungsten minerals respond to treatment by flotation.

In connection with law suits between mining companies at Bingham, Utah, a few years ago, the writer made petrographic studies of more than 1400 rock and mineral samples in thin sections, and also careful studies of their field relations. In petrographic studies, even when an area is studied intensively, attention is commonly centered very largely on the unusual features of special interest, so that the relative abundance of rock types (or minerals or textures) can only be determined by a study of map areas outlined largely by field methods, and cannot be based directly on microscopic work. It is very uncommon, and usually impossible, to take samples at regular short intervals along and across formations. It is precisely because such methods were used at Ringham that the work presents a rare opportunity for determining, on a microscopic basis, the relative abundance of rock types and the continuity of gradations between rock types. At the same time, a study was made of the alteration of sediments under the influence of igneous intrusions, with results that are believed to be of interest and importance. • Sandstone-limestone Gradation The sedimentary rocks of the Bingham district are chiefly sandstones, with some beds of limestone, all now lying with their strike nearly east and their dip nearly north at an angle of about 30°, near the surface. The limestone beds are remarkably irregular in thickness in some places, but usually change very slowly in composition along the strike. However, the most interesting results are obtained from a study of a section across the beds at right angles to the strike. In some places, such sections show the usual alternation of pure sandstone with nearly pure limestone, in the simple manner assumed in most geological discussions.

High quality quartz crystals weighing more than 50 grams are required in several important industrial applications.30,31 Primarily, they are the basic raw material for precision, electronic, frequency control components; this includes oscillators and filters in both radio and telephone services. Quartz crystals are also necessary for optical lenses and prisms in special applications requiring high ultraviolet light-transmission as in spectrographs. Quartz wedges are regular components for petrographic microscopes. The application of crystalline quartz as a transducer* in ultrasonic devices has increased in recent years despite strong competition from barium titanate and magnetostrictive [f] devices. Some quartz is fabricated into delay lines for radar. Man has valued quartz for fabrication of art objects since the dawn of history. The art forms were and are painstakingly carved and polished to form intricate figurines, bowls, statuettes, and the well-known crystal balls. The largest known ball, made of perfect quartz from Burma, is now in the National Museum in Washington. It is 12 7/8 in. in diameter and weighs 106 lb 12 oz. Clear, pure quartz chips and small crystals not meeting the electronic-grade dimensional requirements are known by the Brazilian term lasca. They are used to produce fused quartz having wide application in laboratory equipment, as special glasses, for torsion suspension in scientific instruments, and as a source material for growing large artificial quartz crystals 18,35 Electronic applications far exceed all other uses in importance so any discussion of high-quality quartz crystals must be concerned almost exclusively with those functions. Historical Background Because of their ubiquitous character and natural beauty, quartz crystals have long been of interest and known to man. They have been found among early Egyptian and Chinese art forms and the Sumerians are believed to have fashioned seals, beads, and other jewelry from quartz crystals, perhaps 5,000 years ago. Also, American Indians made arrow heads and fashioned some simple objects of different kinds. The origin of the name quartz, although of Greek derivation, is uncertain. The Greeks appropriately applied their word for frozen water or ice, krustallos, to quartz. The present-day, large-scale practical applications of quartz crystals began in 1880-1881 when Pierre and Jacques Curie reported discovery of the "piezoelectric" effect. They found this effect first in Rochelle salt, a common product of grape-wine refineries, while studying crystal symmetry. Piezoelectricity is that property found in certain crystals, including quartz, whereby electrical charges of equal and opposite sign appear on opposite parts of the crystals when they are stressed. If equal and opposite forces are applied to two opposing prism edges of a single untwinned quartz crystal a positive electrical charge will appear on one edge and a negative charge on the other. The amount of the charges will be directly proportional to the force applied. This property seems to be intimately related to pyroelectricity

CERTAIN American operators believe that desulphurizing in the ladle offers a means of increasing blast-furnace and open-hearth yields with the possibility of improvements in quality of the steel. In fact, several producers have experimented with practically all of the known desulphurizing agents, including both standard grades of the alkalies and special preparations that have been offered from time to time during the past several years. Some of these are regularly being used today in large-scale commercial operations, with good results. Also, it is the practice to treat off-sulphur casts in the blast-furnace ladle at a number of plants. It is not known, however, that anyone in the steel industry (American) has ever adequately equipped a plant for desulphurizing blast-furnace metal in an efficient manner as regular operating practice. The purpose of this paper is to illustrate the importance of correct equipment and proper handling for obtaining uniform and efficient results. As will be shown, at the temperature of molten iron the alkalies are instantly neutralized by any free slag present, dissipating their desulphurizing value. Entrained silicates are rapidly washed out of the metal bath by the highly basic soda slags and will be satisfied ahead of desulphurizing reactions with FeS. More or less of the reagent will always be used up through reactions with the refractory lining. Desulphurization will be limited to the action of the free alkali then remaining in the slag. Causes for the erratic results generally found with desulphurizing tests in blast-furnace transfer ladles would include, among other things, variations in the quantity of furnace slag coming down with the metal, and differences in the percentage of kish and entrained silicates in the different casts. As the alkalies instantly unite with any free slags or silicates present, these, with any kish coming off, both dilute the reagent and reduce the surface contact between the slag and metal, thereby retarding the desulphurizing reactions.

The New Jersey Zinc Zompany operates at Depue, Illinois, an integrated zinc smelting plant using tie vertical retort reduction process. The overall operation comprises green concentrate roasting, sintering, vertical retort smelting and metal refining. In the roasting operation, the fine concentrate is pelletized, the dried pellets fluidized and autogenously roasted with air in a “fluid column” with minimal formation of dust requiring recirculation. The roasted pellets and any associated roaster dust are agglomerated in a rotating drum and laid down, in combination with coal for fuel, on a Dwight-Lloyd sintering machine which converts to a semi-fused mass - a physical state more suitable for vertical retort smelting. The smeltins plant of 27 vertical retorts rated at 8 T zinc each per day on average requires the following major processing steps - mix preparation and briquettine, briquet coking, vertical retort reduction, vapor condensation and slab casting of metal. A portion of zinc production is converted to 99.99+ percent purity by boiling and fractional distillation in columns consisting of externally heated, superimposed trays of high-conductivity refractory.

Concentration of fine quartz particles at the iso-octane/water interface has been investigated under different conditions of pH and dodecylamine concentration. The results obtained from the related studies on the effect of amine concentration and pH on the interfacial tension, adsorption density, electrokinetic potential, contact angle, and concentration of the various amine species in the system are presented. A good correlation was obtained between these different variables. It is well-known that very fine mineral particles are difficult to float in conventional flotation machines. Flotation rate studies have revealed that the rate of flotation of fine mineral particles is much smaller than that of coarser size fractions. The theories accounting for this behavior have been discussed by Arbiter and Harris1 and also Meloy.2 Theoretically, a hydrophobic fine particle might never make contact with a bubble because of the presence of an energy barrier in the vicinity of the air/water interface.' This energy barrier will have electrostatic, hydrodynamic, and Van der Waals force components. It was thought that by using an oil phase instead of air the energy barrier would be decreased so that fine particles could be concentrated at the oil/water interface more readily than at the air/water interface. The technique used involves dispersing the fine particles in water, containing the appropriate chemical reagents, and injecting a fine dispersion of iso-octane oil droplets into the pulp. After vigorous conditioning, the pulp is passed into a separating column where the oil droplets coated with a layer of mineral particles rise to the surface to form a separate layer. Air is introduced into the base of the separating column to ensure that heavy agglomerates of oil and particles report with the organic layer. This technique has been described previously4 and adopted by Lai and Fuerstenau5 who studied the alumina-dodecyl sulfonate system. The interfacial phenomena in the system composed of hematite, water, and iso-octane in the presence of sodium dodecyl sulfate have been studied and the results reported" earlier. This paper describes the results obtained from investigations into the interfacial phenomena in the quartz/water/iso-octane system in the presence of dodecylamine. The technique used in measuring the interfacial tension, electrokinetic potential, contact angle, and adsorption density were similar to those described previously? Materials Selected pieces of a high purity natural quartz, from the Isle of Man, were crushed in a laboratory jaw crusher and pulverizer. The — 52+72 mesh size fraction was retained and leached with successive washes of hot concentrated hydrochloric acid to remove iron impurities. When no iron was detected in the solution by ammonium thiocyanate, the quartz was washed thoroughly with distilled water until the conductivity of the wash water assumed that of the distilled water. Samples of 25 g of the —52+72 mesh quartz were ground for 5.25 min in an agate vibratory mill. The ground product was 100% —44 m and 57% —10 am, as determined by the Andreasen pipette. The specific surface area of the sample used for the adsorption and flotation tests was 0.94 sq m g-l. This corresponds to a mean particle diameter of 2.4 am. The —44 am quartz sample was stored under vacuum in the presence of silica gel crystals. For the contact angle determination between the three phases, quartz, iso-octane, and water, a piece of the natural quartz was ground into a block about 15 mm long, 15 mm wide, and 5 mm thick. One surface of the block was then polished by successively finer grades of silicon carbide "paper." The final polishing was conducted with alumina on a "hyprocel" paper. The polished quartz specimen was cleaned using nitric acid and ethyl alcohol followed by a wash with distilled water and then stored under distilled water. This pro-

THE forms in which sulphur is commonly found-native sulphur, sulphides of many metals and sulphates-are widely distributed throughout the world. The two first mentioned are the principal sources of sulphur. Substantial amounts of sulphur in some form are recovered from gases from industrial plants and from gases from smelters treating other minerals. In recent years, plants have been installed in the United States to recover sulphur in elemental form from sour gases."' The amount of sulphur so produced is small at the present time but undoubtedly will increase in the future. The recovery of sulphur from gases is not covered in this chapter, which is confined to: (1) native sulphur deposits of Texas and Louisiana; (2) those of Italy; (3) other scattered deposits of native sulphur; and (4) pyrites deposits found in many countries of the world.30 Sulphur, a nonmetallic element, occurs normally in well developed bipyramidal or tabular crystals of the orthorhombic system, as well as in stalactitic and earthy masses. The mineral has a distinctive yellow color, which may be dark and discolored by impurities; the streak is white; the luster is resinous; and the fracture is conchoidal to uneven. Sulphur is translucent to opaque; has a hardness of 1.5 to 2.5, a specific gravity of 2.05, and an atomic weight of 32.06.16 The molecular weight of the solid is expressed by the symbol SS and that of the liquid and vapor ranges from S2 to S8, depending on the temperature. Sulphur melts at a temperature between 2340 and 248°F, depending on its crystalline state, to a liquid of dark amber color, the boiling point of which is 832°F. The viscosity near the melting point is about that of water and increases to 50,000 times that of water at a temperature of 380°F, subsequently falling rapidly to a low figure at the boiling point. Crystallization changes slowly from rhombic to monoclinic above 205 °F and in cooling the transformation is reversed. The mineral is a very poor conductor of heat and electricity; it is insoluble in water and nearly all acids and is soluble in cold carbon bisulphide and carbon tetrachloride. It ignites in air at a temperature of 478°F, burning with a distinctive blue flame with evolution of sulphur dioxide.47
