INTERNAL The year 1976 was another outstanding year in the operation of the Institute and in the success of its varied activities. Total AIME membership reached 59,773 for a gain of. 6.4 percent. Total revenue increased to $5,111,2 10, up 22.4 percent, and balance sheet assets increased to $8,479,612, up 12.2 percent from the previous year. AIME and its constituent units conducted 30 technical meetings during the year, and attendance was up at most of them. Publications issued by the Constituent Societies continued a healthy growth. During the year 9 new local Sections were established, and at the end of the year the Institute had 150 Sections, with 19 of them overseas. Details on all of these operations are on pages 2 and 3 of this report.

ON Thursday a most interesting symposium on "Gases in Metals" was held, with both morning and afternoon sessions. The morning was devoted principally to the considerations of the steel maker, the nonferrous field being taken up in the afternoon period. Dr. John Johnston, as chairman, introduced the subject with "A Short Analysis of the Gas-metal Problem and Its Practical Importance." He then introduced P. H. Brace who explained in considerable detail the various vacuum fusion and other methods in use at present, both here and abroad, in the study of "gases" in metals. He was fol¬lowed immediately by H. W. Graham on "The Effect of Oxygen in Steel." The papers elicited considerable discussion, the point being particularly noted by both Dr. Rawdon and Dr. Sauveur that a knowledge of "total oxygen" alone is not sufficient information for the metallurgist, distribution of oxygen being probably the more important. Dr. Johnston, in commenting on the lack of agreement among many of the methods now in use, such as the Ledebur and vacuum fusion, spoke of the contemplated plan of the Iron and Steel Division to have a number of standard samples analyzed by many laboratories by the various methods, the Bureau of Standards acting as a clearing house, so that more definite information may be obtained on the comparative accuracy of the method.

PART 1: DENSE MEDIUM SEPARATION by E. R. PALOWITCH and A. W. DEURBROUK INTRODUCTION During 1965, 64.9 percent of the 512 million tons of bituminous coal and lignite produced was cleaned mechanically, of which 95 million tons was cleaned by dense medium processes.l The percentage of bituminous coal and lignite cleaned mechanically by dense medium processes rose from 7.0 to 28.5 percent from 1938 to 1965. Dense medium separations include those coal preparation processes which clean raw coal by immersing it in a fluid having a density intermediate between clean coal and reject. As there is a general correlation between ash content and specific gravity, it is possible to achieve the required degree of removal of ash-forming impurities from a raw coal by regulating the specific gravity of the separating fluid. Dense medium processes offer the following advantages over other coal cleaning processes : 1. Ability to make sharp separations at any specific gravity within the range normally required even in the presence of high percentages of the feed in the range of e 0.1 specific gravity units. 2. Ability to maintain a separating gravity that can be controlled with ±0.005 specific gravity units. 3. Ability to handle a wide range of sizes (up to 14 inches). 4. Relatively low capital and operating costs when considered in terms of high capacity and small space requirements. 5. Ability to change specific gravity of separation to meet varying market requirements. 6. Ability to handle fluctuations in feed both in terms of quantity and quality. HISTORY Sir Henry Bessemer patented the first dense medium process in 1858. Solutions of the chlorides of iron, manganese, barium and calcium were proposed as separating liquids; the separation was made in a cone-shaped separator. THE Cerro de Pasco Copper Corp. began to produce bismuth at the Oroya smelter in 1929, at which time the only important consumption of that metal was in the manufacture, of pharmaceutical compounds, and the normal supply of metal exceeded the demand. With a new and major producer entering the field, additional uses for bismuth had to be developed. A survey indicated that the most promising opportunity lay in fusible alloys containing bismuth. A large number of bismuth alloys were known and a few of them were being used in the manufacture of automatic sprinkler heads and safety plugs. The literature cover in,- the- alloys was found to be sketchy and contradictory. Research, development, and educational work carrried on by the Corporation during the past fifteen years has resulted in greatly enlarged uses for the metal. (Butte Meeting, August, 1913.) IN metallurgical circle it is. known widely, but somewhat vaguely, that the ease of reduction of metallic .oxides. depends largely on the way they have been prepared. It is likewise known that. different forms of carbon have different and greatly varying reducing powers. It is the purpose of, this paper to show somewhat more definitely and scientifically these facts. Sonic years ago the writer published an account of pyrometric determinations of the reduction temperature of zinc oxides variously prepared and of several kinds.1 In said paper it was shown that the temperature at which zinc oxide evolves zinc according to the equation, ZnO+C? Zn+CO depends upon the nature of -the two reacting bodies. The determinations bad a range of accuracy of from 2°to 6°C.,whereas differences were found to, amount to an extreme of 90° C. So the differences are real ones and must have a definite cause. The equation of boiling water, (H2 O)4 = 4 (H20) has a fixed temperature for? equilibrium of 100° C. at 760 mm. pressure. In general, all equations reacting in the liquid or the gaseous phase have well-defined constant physical conditions which govern the equilibrium point and reaction velocities.

The development of Gulf Coast salt domes thus far, although enormously successful and productive, has proceeded in an unscheduled fashion governed by events rather than by a comprehensive plan. Motivation for the sequential progress of exploitation has included mineral discoveries, inventions, technological improvements, new needs, and a dynamic economy. Although it is too late to implement a plan for the entire cycle of exploitation of this resource, it would seem advisable to introduce now a system concept for further development. Viewed from this perspective, general determinative parameters should include economic, environmental, logistical, technical, and resource considerations, and more fundamentally, basic societal goals. Experience gained from planning in the Gulf Coast should provide guidelines for use elsewhere in the world.

Kansas produced 38,150,878 bbl. of oil in 1928 and 40,658,170 bbl. in 1929, thereby retaining its rank as fourth among the oil-producing states of this country. Production for 1928 was less than that for 1927 (Fig. 1) because of a decrease in the number of completions, but the average initial production per well (Table 1) shows an increase due to the completion of wells of comparatively large capacity in the new Valley Center pool of Sedgwick County. This increase in average initial production per well was further augmented during 1929 by completion of additional wells of comparatively large capacity in the Valley Center pool and the new Greenwich pool of Sedgwick County. IN developing the orebody on lower levels of the Star mine at Burke, Idaho, Hecla Mining Co. is faced with a serious problem in driving raises. Levels are at 200-ft intervals. As a raise is being driven between levels, at points about 70 and 130 ft from the sill, heavy pressure arches develop and the raise becomes extremely hazardous. Eventually, following a blast, caving occurs, making it impossible to recover the raise. In February 1957 it was decided to attempt sinking a small winze on the vein from the 5500 to the 5700 level. This shaft (winze-raise No. 2) was to be used as a raise prior to stoping. It was assumed, and correctly, that the heavy ground pressure could be controlled by timbering close to the bottom after each advance.

Mining examinations are of several kinds and the scope of the investigation depends in each case upon the purpose for which the examination is made. A formal examination of a developed mine is an expensive undertaking; from one to several months are allowed for the work according to the size of the property; many samples are taken; investigation is made of the geological features, including, perhaps, a topographical and geological survey of the surface; the metallurgical treatment of the ore is studied; finally, a determination of costs is demanded. Formal examinations are made for prospective purchasers or as a basis for the consolidation of several properties, and occasionally, in the owner's behalf, to verify the work of resident engineers, or to determine the readiness of a mine for equipment and the kind and capacity of equipment it shall receive. A formal examination of a mine should not be undertaken until a preliminary examination has shown that it is justified. It is regrettable that some engineers are in the habit of prosecuting long and exhaustive examinations of properties whose lack of merit should be, and perhaps is, apparent from the start, or of continuing their investigation long after an unfavorable result is seen to be inevitable. This wasting of a client's money is a species of trickery difficult to prove, and therefore the more contemptible. Metallurgists have long believed that martensite in steel forms as plates along the octahedral {111} planes of austenite. Much has been written about mechanisms whereby units of the austenite lattice are pictured as transforming to martensite by shearing movements initiated along the octahedral planes of austenite, supposedly resulting in plates of martensite lying parallel to these planes of shear. A critical inspection of two or three photomicrographs of quenched hypereutectoid steel led us to the conclusion that the orientation habit of martensite, at least in hypereutectoid austenite, could not possibly be octahedral. Inasmuch as recent studies,30,31 of the martensite-type reaction in nonferrous alloy systems have established the irrational orientation habit as characteristic of this type of lattice transformation, the need for a thorough restudy of the crystallography of martensite formation in steel was evident. The present paper reports the results of such a study, extended to include both cementite and some of the products of constant-temperature decomposition of austenite. Also reported are a few of the results obtained from a microscopic and X-ray study of the austempering process in very high-carbon steel. I. The classification here used is one of convenience only; it is not intended to include all known types of ore deposits. The characteristic features of the several well-marked types of primary mineralizations are described without reference to the ultimate source of their metals. The minerals of many deposits of obscure origin were probably introduced through fissures that are now healed, or are due to the migration of metals from such deposits. [ ] It is not within the scope of this book to enter into a general discussion of the genesis of ore deposits but, in view of the progress being made in our comprehension of the conditions under which ore deposits were formed, mention should be made of recent work. J. E. Spurr's two volumes, "The Ore Magmas," are recommended as crystallizing the views of those who are inclined to ascribe the origin of most ore deposits to a differential precipitation from magmatic rock masses and to the migration and precipitation of the viscous, liquid or gaseous exhalations from those masses.
