Studies of reservoir behavior of 12 Smackover limestone oil and condensate pools are presented. Buckner, Midway, McKamie, Magnolia, Mt. Holly, Schuler (Reynolds) and Village are treated in considerable detail and subjected to analysis with an electrical device for analyzing reservoir behavior. Results and comparisons of these analyses are presented. In addition to these reservoir-behavior studies, an attempt is made to assemble trans-missibility and storage data on the Smackover limestone formation from cores and logs taken in dry holes and producers. This together with the behavior of individual reservoirs leads to a better understanding of the formation as a porous aquifer. The ultimate purpose of this type of study is to improve predictions concerning the future behavior of these pools in such a system. Predictions are presented for several pools. Introduction In 1937 the Phillips Petroleum Co. drilled its J. D. Reynolds No. I to the Smackover limestone formation at Snow Hill, Arkansas. This well found oil in the porous, permeable, upper part of the Smackover, thereafter referred to as the Reynolds lime. Since then, six oil pools and six condensate pools have been discovered in the Reynolds lime, and more than 75 dry holes have explored parts of this formation. By the first of 1943, 44 million barrels of oil and 83 billion cubic feet of gas had been withdrawn from the various reservoirs. The original reserves estimated by the Arkansas Oil and Gas Commission were 342 million barrels of oil and rzoo billion cubic feet of gas. So far all of the production has been from anticlinal structures, most of which are asymmetric and have their axes roughly perpendicular to the dip of the formation top. This is indicated in Fig. I, which shows the pools, dry holes drilled, and contours on top of the Smackover.' These pools are of particular interest for reservoir-behavior studies because the production and drilling has been controlled, and in most cases the records of reservoir data are complete. In addition to the excellent production and pressure information available, more than one half of the wells drilled were cored and all of them were electrically logged. All of the pools show evidence of water drive. While this paper is in a sense a collection of reservoir-behavior studies for several different pools, there has been an attempt to go one step further and to show the importance of the iormation as a porous continuum or a single aquifer in which the withdrawals of fluids from any pool has an important effect on the behavior of all of the pools. An effort will be made to show that the water drives of these pools are dependent upon a much larger area of the Smackover limestone than that occupied by the petroleum accumulations.

IN a previous paper1 the authors have investigated the structure of the oxide films formed on most of the metals that make up the alloys of this study. The metals were studied in order to provide basic information on the structures, both physical and chemical, of the oxide films and to determine how these structures are effected by the temperature, time of oxidation, and surface preparation. It was felt that an understanding of the physical and chemical structure as well as the stability of the oxide film might furnish clues as to the nature of the reaction process and the protective quality of the film. The oxidation of the metals was studied over the temperature range 300° to 700°C. except for copper, where the range selected was 100° to 500°C. The results of these studies were presented in graphical form as existence diagram, of the oxides on a time-temperature scale. For some of the metals the existence diagrams were simple and showed few chemical transitions, but there were numerous cases where the physical state of the oxide surface was a function of time and temperature. In general the physical state of the oxide surface changed with increasing temperature so as to increase the sharpness of the diffraction patterns and to cause orientation effects to be more pronounced. Deviations in lattice parameters from X-ray values were noted. In general these deviations were of positive nature and may be due to solid solution of the metal in the oxide lattice. This effect might be expected in thin oxide films. In a study of the oxidation of alloys containing two or more metals, there may arise the complicating factor of identification of the oxides formed. A thorough understanding of the oxides formed on the pure metals, therefore, was, essential before investigation of the oxidation of alloys. In this paper it is our purpose to present a study of the following problems: I The existence diagrams of various alloys. [2.] The effect of the structure of the [ying] metal on the existence diagram of Iron. 3. The effect of the percentage of chromium on the oxides formed on Fe-Cr alloys. 4. The relationships, if any, between the oxides formed and the protective quality of the oxides. The following alloys are included in this study: alloys of iron with body- centered cubic, face-centered cubic and other metals, 13 Cr-Fe, 18-8 stainless steel, K42B1 Nichrome V, Hipernik, Inconel, Stellite " 21," Refractaloy, Kovar, mild steel, a series of Cr-Fe alloys and a series of Co-Fe alloys. Since many of the commercial alloys in this list contain more than two metals, various complicating factors in the identification of the oxides formed may arise.

AUSTENITE is often defined as a solid solution of carbon or carbide in a nonmagnetic form of iron. Conversely, magnetic measurements are often used by investigators for the purpose of detecting the degree of austenite decomposition after an iron alloy has been subjected to certain thermal or mechanical treatments. Association of the magnetic state with the gamma-phase decomposition is often extended to the alloys of iron with elements other than carbon. Definition of austenite as a nonmagnetic solid solution cannot be accepted in the light of available information without certain reservations. The relation of magnetic transformations with the gamma-phase decomposition in the complex alloys of iron has never been rigorously proved. The present investigation deals primarily with the magnetic trans-formation that occurs in carbon steels during the quenching process. The work was further limited to a study of magnetic transformation in carbon steels quenched at such rates as are necessary to retain the product of austenite decomposition in a martensitic state.

INTRODUCTION Comminution is generally a feed preparation step for subsequent processing stages; exceptions being when a final product such as aggregates, specification sand, Portland Cement, and similar products is produced. Grinding, the fine product phase of comminution, requires a large capital investment and frequently is the area of maximum usage of power and wear resistant materials. Grinding is most frequently done in rotating drums utilizing loose grinding media, lifted by the rotation of the drum, to break the ores in various combinations of impact, attrition and abrasion to produce the specified product. Grinding media can be the ore itself (autogenous grinding -- primary and secondary), natural or manufactured non-metallic media (pebble milling) or manufactured metallic media -- steel rods, steel or iron balls. This chapter will discuss general mill design and the specific design and application of the following types of tumbling grinding mills. Liners The interior surface of grinding mills exposed to grinding media and/or the material being ground are protected from wear and corrosion by rubber, metallic, a combination of rubber and metallic, or non-metallic wear resistant materials. B. Drives Economics at the time of plant design and mill purchase determine the drive to be used. The simplest drive is the low speed synchronous motor with speeds in the range of 150 to 250 RPM connected to the mill pinion-shaft by either an air clutch or flexible coupling.

Tars paper describes briefly the topography and geology of the region where the mica-bearing pegmatites are found and discusses prospecting, the quality of the mica, its preparation, and evaluation of the deposits. Muscovite mica occurs in a number of widely separated localities in Brazil, but production has come largely from deposits in the southeastern and eastern part of the State of Minas Gerais (Fig. I). There the deposits form a discontinuous zone, which starts at a point 90 km. north of the city of Rio de Janeiro and extends north for some 500 km., roughly parallel to the coast. A maximum width of 180 km. is reached along the Rio Doce. To the west in Minas Gerais, and extending east into the states of Espirito Santo and Rio de Janeiro, the mica zone proper is fringed by areas in which there are scattered occurrences of mica-bearing pegmatites. A few of these outlying deposits have produced commercial mica, but most of them are unimportant. To the southwest, in the State of São Paulo, there are a number of mines, which at one time produced a very considerable amount of sheet mica, largely as a by-product of kaolin mining. These deposits, and, a few others lying between them and the main productive areas to the northeast, appear to be the southwestern continuation of the strong Minas Gerais mica zone. In the vicinity of Conquista, just north of the Minas Gerais boundary in the State of Bahia, and still farther north, near Jacobina, there are several known mica deposits. Their location indicates that they may be the northern continuation of the main mica zone. The major part of Brazilian mica production has come from four areas within the mica zone proper; from north to south, Governador Valadares, Raul Soares, Espera Feliz, and Muriaé. The first is 190 km. from north to south and reaches a maximum width of 180 km. The Raul Soares area extends 135 km. from northeast to southwest, and in places is 80 km. wide. The Espera Feliz area is 100 km. from north to south, and reaches a width of 35 km. The Muriaé area extends 150 km. from northeast to southwest and its width reaches 40 kilometers. Between the known productive areas, and in the areas directly to the southwest and to the north of them, little mica has been produced. These gaps, as well as certain irregularities in the outline of the mica zone itself, are to be ascribed either to lack of prospecting or to conditions preventing the discovery of mica, rather than to its nonexistence. Is recent years, exploration and development by diamond drilling has become a popular attack on the problem of finding new ore shoots and developing extensions of known shoots. Diamond drilling has been used in recent years in extensive sampling of disseminated copper deposits, in preference to churn drilling. At the Harvard gold mine, near Jamestown, California, Philip R. Bradley, Jr., general superintendent, reports that: "The Harvard work was a singular example of the reliance that can be placed on diamond drilling in evaluating an ore body." Drilling at the Harvard mine will be discussed in a subsequent section of the paper. So popular has diamond drilling become, indeed, that many who have had slight experience with drilling are inclined to regard it as a cheap cure-all. This paper proposes to show some of the limitations on the application of drilling and some of the steps that should be followed in drilling programs to obtain reliable results. Cost oF Drilling Drilling has the advantage, over shaft sinking and drifting, of lower cost and greater speed. As compared with churn drilling, the advantage of bringing up a coherent sample instead of fine cuttings for a sample is obvious. Diamond drilling is generally more expensive, however, and more engineering effort is required in combining the average of core and sludge samples. Exploration of drift walls by hammer drills to a depth of less than 30 ft. is generally cheaper than diamond drilling, but beyond this depth the diamond drill is cheaper and more efficient. The principal factor in determining cost of drilling is the character of the ground drilled. Broken ground with many fissures is most expensive to drill. Hard ground is less of a problem with diamond drills than with ordinary machine drills. Hardness or softness affects only the speed of drilling. Caving, easily washed, sandy or clayey ground requires continual cementing and casing, which is the greatest cost problem. Thus, soft, incompetent ground is more costly to drill than hard, massive ground. Cost of drilling per foot in good to fair ground varies from less than $I per foot, achieved in some districts in Ontario, the Mother Lode, and Missouri, to $5 per foot in many western states. In bad drilling ground, costs may range from $5 to $15 or more per foot, thus approaching the cost of drifting. Other factors that increase the cost per foot are: I. Short total length of hole drilled, so that the cost of moving in crews and equipment must be spread over a relatively few feet. 2. Cost of drilling per foot increases with depth beyond about 500 ft.. as more time is consumed in pulling rods' 3. Cost of preparing drilling stations, getting air underground to stations? etc' 4. Inaccessibility and lack of water on the job make for higher costs.

Various rationalizations of preferred orientations in cold worked polycrystalline metals have been based on the operation of at least two three2 five, an indefinite number, and all,6 slip systems of the type occurring in single crystals. Pickus and Mathewson3 suggested that the cold rolling texture in face-centered cubic metals could be rationalized on the basis of two or more operating slip directions symmetrically disposed about the direction of flow in such a manner that the resolved shear stress factor is equal for all operating slip systems and lattice rotations cancel each other. The importance of the direction of flow, the necessity for the operation of slip systems capable of producing the required changes in external dimensions, the maintenance of a common surface between adjacent grains and a symmetrical arrangement of the operating slip systems in order to produce an end orientation which is stable under additional deformation lead to the following rationalization of textures based on the type of slip systems operative in single crystals. The rationalization is intended to explain why certain orientations are suitable for deformational flow without a change in orientation and thus are stable end orientations or ideal texture orientations. It does not attempt to explain how the grains of a randomly oriented polycrystalline aggregate will reach this orientation. The rationalization is based on the following four postulates: 1. The ideal textures for polycrystalline aggregates are the result of reorientations of individual crystals toward the same stable end orientation at which no further reorientation will occur even during additional deformation. Since, in simple slip, the relative orientations of the stress axis and the active slip system determine the change in orientation during slip, it is considered that the orientation of the stress axis with respect to the ideal texture determines what slip systems must be active to retain the stable end orientation. Therefore the stable end orientation should be a symmetrical one around the stress axis with respect to the active slip systems such that lattice rotations resulting from slip will cancel each other and prevent a resultant change in orientation. (Rotational symmetry only—not translation, inversion, nor others—is considered here.) Thus a metal under a pure stress should develop a texture consisting of one or more of the crystallographically symmetrical directions, <100>, <110> or <111> for cubic metals or <0001>, <1010> or <1120> for hexagonal close-packed metals, parallel to the stress axis. 2. Since the active slip direction is the direction of glide during simple slip and thus the direction of maximum shear movement, in the ideal texture the active slip

The ore from the Butte mines of the Anaconda company is quite siliceous; that is, it contains considerably less iron than is needed for the fluxing of the silica. The direct smelting of this ore, therefore, requires the addition of considerable fluxing material. The only flux available in sufficient quantity at Anaconda is limestone containing no metallic minerals. This necessarily makes the direct smelting of the ore so expensive that it is more profitable to subject the ore to a preliminary treatment by concentration. However, as the losses in the concentrator were very high, compared with the losses in the blast furnaccs, it was found, by calculation, more profitable to send ores containing more than a given percentage of copper to the blast furnaces, in spite of the higher costs of treatment. The dividing point was dependent on various factors, the chief of which was the prevailing market price of copper. It was customary, therefore, to segregate the ore as mined into two classes. Ore in the first class generally contained 5 per cent. or over of copper; this was sent directly to the blast-furnace department. Second-class ore contained less than 5 per cent. of copper, and averaged around 3 per cent.; it went to the concentrating department. With the introduction of the flotation process, it mas found possible to maintain an average recovery, as concentrates, of 96 per cent. At the same time, the cost of reverberatory smelting was very materially decreased by the use of pulverized coal. These two changes in practice made the blast furnaces unable to compete with the reverberatory furnaces on a cost basis. The distinction between first- and second-class ore was therefore abandoned, and the ore was treated by concentration. Obviously, on ores as high in iron as the Butte ores, the concentrator produces a product that is self-fluxing; in fact, it is possible to produce a concentrate containing more iron than is necessary to flux the silica. Under these conditions, the amount of basic fluxing materials required for the smelting operations became very srnall and the converter slag lost its former value as a blast-furnace flux. For this reason, a less expensive method of recovering the copper, silver, and gold contained in it than smelting in blast furnaces had to be found. It was not feasible

Metallurgists are making use of the stereographic projection to a steadily increasing extent. In the last five years no less than 20 papers in American metallurgical journals alone have employed the stereographic projection; recent books on physical metallurgy, plastic deformation, X-rays and their applications, and crystal structure use it. Mineralogists have used the stereographic projection for many years in the description of symmetry classes and crystal planes, for it presents an accurate, easily understood plot of any angular relations in crystals with all unessential features eliminated (such as the accidentally determined size and shape of crystal faces). In metallography and physical metallurgy the projection is much used for the analysis of markings appearing on polished grains: slip lines, twins, cracks, structures formed by precipitation, magnetic-powder patterns, etch pits, etc. Data from certain types of X-ray photograms are most conveniently analyzed by its use, particularly those for determining the orientation of single crystals or the preferred orientation of grains in an aggregate. Calculations of how to tilt or cut a crystal parallel to a certain crystallographic plane or to reflect X-rays from a certain plane are rapidly carried out. It has been adopted almost universally to the exclusion of other methods by those studying the deformation of metallic crystals, save where the accuracy required is greater than a few tenths of a degree. Any directional property in a crystal or polycrystalline material can be shown on a stereographic projection; for example, the modulus of elasticity, yield point, etc. It has been repeatedly called to our attention that there is need of an elementary explanation of the principles and methods of stereographic projection, covering all the common applications in the field of metallography and physical metallurgy. The following contribution is an attempt to fill this need. The description of each method is supplemented with references to publications in which the method has been used. The endlessly changing pattern of mineral supply and demand offers opportunity to the alert and can bring disaster to the unwary. The discovery of ore bodies, the invention of extractive processes, the provision of new transport facilities, the political stabilization of underdeveloped areas, and many other changes can increase supply dramatically. Such new outpourings of mineral wealth from ore bodies bring fortunes to their developers, and consumers frequently find their competitive positions decidedly improved by new and cheap sources of supply. On the other hand, operators of marginal properties can find competition from newly opened high-grade mines intolerable. Consumers that have depended on the products of nearby, high-cost mines may find new, remote, low-cost supplies advantageous only to their competitors. The invention of new prospecting methods can have spectacular effects. Shortly after World War I the discovery rate of petroleum pools began to decline. The leading prospecting technique of that day, the projection downward of surface reflections of geologic structure, was proving less rewarding. Prophets foretold an oil shortage in the near future. But at that very moment scientists were perfecting the application of seismic waves to reveal underground oil-bearing geologic structures. As these geophysical methods were put into commercial use the whole outlook changed-the problem of the 1930&apos;s became how to cope with the surplus from discovery, not how to meet the ever rising demand. Many lead mines were being abandoned as unprofitable about this same time because the penalties charged by smelters for the zinc in the ores and concentrates more than counterbalanced the payments for lead and silver. I know that those of us who are tangled up with this lei thing work will appreciate any suggestions that will make us work harder and, scheme, harder to pull through these past difficulties on leaching. Bennie, General Manager of the Shannon Copper Co., Clifton, Ariz., &apos;it has been my valued privilege to cooperate in the elaboration of a hydrometallurgical process aiming at the recovery of copper in mill tailing resulting from a gravity concentration of a low-grade semi-oxidized sulphide ore occurring in a porphyritic gangue. The experimental work which has been carried on with a 25-ton plant is completed, and the company is building at present a leaching plant on a larger scale, the first unit consisting of a 150-ton roasting furnace and accessories for leaching the calcine.

The age of specialization has made man increasingly dependent on a larger number of different metals and minerals. Overexploitation during World War II and lavish squandering of irreplaceable mineral wealth in the past has resulted in the rapidly approaching exhaustion of some of the major domestic ore sources. History clearly points out that the United States cannot continue to be a world power on an "import to survive" policy. A constructive program of development and appraisal of the nation&apos;s mineral wealth, including the planned conservation of her resources, must be adopted. Strictly speaking, conservation of minerals must mean the orderly exploitation of our resources and the prevention of waste in use, with due regard for the future. Real concern for the future may not extend beyond a few generations. Eventually science and invention should take care of the problems arising from shortages of some minerals, and the national defense aspects of domestic deficiencies can be provided for by stock piling and other measures. Early conservationists had this viewpoint; but with a rapidly developing industry and population, a farsighted policy that would deny full realization of immediate ambitions became unpopular. Consequently, the politically minded conservationist broadened the concept to include "prudent use of resources" and brought under the conservation umbrella

The activity in exploration and in the acquisition of prospective oil lands that reached such a high level in Colombia during 1936 gained momentum and reached unprecedented proportions during 1937. Both national and private lands were taken up. In the Magdalena Valley above Puerto Berrio, leases on large tracts of private lands are held by Richmond (Standard of California), Shell and Texas. Tropical also owns leases covering a block of acreage in this area near Honda. From Puerto Berrio to El Banco most of the acreage is of national ownership, and concessions covering parts of this area have been granted to Tropical, Socony Vacuum, Shell and others, while applications for additional concessions are pending. Latterly leases on private lands below the Lebrija River have been taken out by Shell and Richmond. In the drainage basins of the Meta and Guaviare Rivers of the Llanos region of eastern Colombia, several of the major companies have carried on geological exploration and it is understood that some private properties have been leased or optioned. This paper presents an approximate solution of the problem of freezing of a binary alloy. he alloy is in the form of a one-dimensional slab of finite thickness. The surface temperature of the slab is assumed to be constant and lower than the solidus (or eutectic) temperature. The densities of the liquid and the solid are assumed to be equal. For a given binary alloy system, initial concentration of solute and surface temperature, the solution yields a) the temperature distribution in the solid skin, b) the temperature, concentration, and solid fraction distribution within the solid-liquid region, and c) the positions of the liquidus and the solidus (or eutectic) fronts as a function of time. The results of calculation for Fe-C and Fe-P systems are presented. In this investigation we are considering the problem of solidification of a binary alloy. The alloy is in the form of a one-dimensional slab of finite thickness. The molten alloy is initially at liquidus temperature. At time zero the surface of the slab is reduced to a temperature T, < Te,, where Te, is the solidus (or eutectic) temperature and T, is a constant. The densities of solid and liquid alloys are assumed to be equal and independent of temperature and composition. A qualitative picture of solidification of an alloy, under these conditions, is illustrated in Fig. 1. During the initial stage of solidification, before liquidus front reaches the center of the slab, freezing proceeds by propagation of two isothermal fronts, the liquidus front and the solidus (or eutectic) front. The fraction of solid at the liquidus front is zero; the fraction of solid at the solidus front is unity, The solid fraction and the temperature distribution between the two fronts and the width of the solid-liquid region change with time. During the later stage of freezing, after the liquidus front reaches the center of the slab, the liquidus front disappears. The solid fraction and the temperature at the center of the slab, as well as throughout the solid-liquid region, are now changing with time. The solidification is completed when the fraction of solid at the center of the slab reaches unity. The history and efficiency of 40-ton capacity dump trucks for surface waste removal at the New Cornelia opencut copper mine, at Ajo, Ariz., are summed up in this paper. Tabulations of truck performance, together with detailed cost figures, prove the value of truck transportation for certain special operations at a large mine. Emphasis is given to the fact that truck transportation not only reduces the haulage costs but also reduces the breaking ground and shovel-loading costs per ton. The New Cornelia opencut copper mine is in the desert. The climate is ideal for seven months of the year, but the five summer months are uncomfortably hot. &apos;She elevation is 1820 ft. above sea level and the annual rainfall is approximately 6 inches. The ore body is a monzonite-porphyry deposit. The waste-rock capping consists of hard rhyolite, conglomerate and porphyry. All the material is hard and cannot be excavated without blasting. The rhyolite and conglomerate waste is very blocky. The weight of the rock in place is 2.16 tons per cubic yard. The average mine production per day is 22,090 tons of 012 and 18,000 tons Of waste rock, the latter consisting of surface rock and material within the ore body too low in grade to send to the concentrator. The rock is loaded by electric shovels with 4½-cu. yd. dippers. The primary transportation of ore to the concentrator and waste to the dumps is by 30-yd. dump cars and oil-burning steam locomotives; therefore truck haulage of waste is a minor factor of the New Cornelia operation. However, as New Cornelia was one of the first mines to use large-capacity dump trucks for haulage, the results obtained are of interest. Equipment On the south side of the New Cornelia is a hill rising about 500 ft. above the normal surface elevation, roughly 1000 ft. in diameter at its base, called locally Arkansas Mountain peak. Exploratory drilling in this area developed additional ore that could be made accessible for open pit operation only by moving the mountain face a maximum distance of 400 ft. to the south. The slope of the mountain adjacent to the pit averaged 35°, and the small area involved precluded the use of train haulage for the removal of the 4,000,000 tons of waste estimated above the normal pit elevation. A study of dump-truck haulage at Boulder Dam and San Gabriel Dam led to the decision to use large-capacity end-diii~lp trucks rather than smaller trucks, for the following reasons: I. The truck would have to withstand the impact of hard, heavy chunks, some of them weighing as much as 10 tons, which would be dumped from the 4½-cu. yd. dipper. 2. The coarse, rocky, abrasive material would soon damage a light truck body. 3. The body of a small truck could not be efficiently loaded with coarse rock.

I HIT the ceiling when I opened my November MINING ENGINEERING and after waiting a week to cool off I&apos; still find it necessary to express my resentment of the gross libel embodied in the editorial introduction to Norman Stines&apos; legitimate criticism of my paper on "Russia&apos;s Mineral Potential" (p. 949). The underlying thesis of my article, and a point that I tried to make even more clearly in my oral presentation at the St. Louis meeting last February, is that we should not over estimate the present and near-future mineral production of the USSR. The words that I resent in your boxed introduction are: "Opinions range from those presented by Paul Tyler ... to those of Norman C. Stines . . ." This is not merely an understatement that can be defended by admitting that the range goes much farther to the left, beyond me. It represents the appraisal that 90 pct of your members will carry away, namely that I am not only an incompetent observer-which may be true-but always that my bias is to applaud the efficiency of the beasts in the Kremlin-which is not true. Notwithstanding my efforts to clarify the record I now find myself branded as being at the opposite pole from &apos;Mr. Stines among the red-eyed worshipers of Communism or at least among the timid souls that shake in their boots in the belief that the Soviet system has created an invincible as well as an evil menace to the decent peoples of the world. My ideas are somewhere in the middle ground between Mr. Stines&apos; complaisance or contempt and the exaggerated fears of several other observers whose views have received wide acceptance. PAUL M. Corundum, little publicized as an industrial abrasive, has, in its small way, contributed greatly to the production of many specialized items vital to our war program and to Our allies. Optical elements Of the highest quality for range finders, bombsights, and scientific instruments; precision metal parts for torpedoes and airplane engines; quartz crystal plates for military radios; armorplate and malleable castings for tanks and guns; and eyeglasses for everyone; these are some Of the products that corundum has helped to produce in the quantities needed and on time. Unlike metals and many other raw materials, corundum is not incorporated into any Of these finished products. It is simply a grinding medium used to produce the desired finish or precision; an operating supply or tool, so to speak. With a Mobs&apos; scale index of 9, corundum ranks next to the diamond in hardness among the natural minerals and is superior to emery and garnet. The gem varieties of corundum, including the Oriental ruby and sapphire, are frequently more highly prized as jewels than the diamond. It is the intent Of this paper to deal Only with a description of the corundum industry, the administration of wartime control, and certain economic aspects as seen by the author. Several references are listed to assist anyone who wishes further information on the geological occurrence of the mineral. Ore Production and Consumption For the past two decades, south Africa has been the world&apos;s sole producer of corundum ore. A possible exception is Russia, where, it is understood, there was considerable production during the thirties for domestic consumption but for which statistics are lacking. The United States is the world&apos;s principal consumer of corundum ore; imports lor the period 1934 through 1940 averaging 3000 Short tons per year, The years 1935 and 1936 were close to the 5000-ton mark, and imports during 1941, the last prewar year for which statistics have been released, were approximately 6000 Short tons. Again lacking statistics on Russia, the United Kingdom ranks second, but far below the United States in consumption of ore. Historically, corundum has been found in some 35 countries throughout the world, but the principal deposits are in South Africa, Canada, Madagascar, Russia and the united States. Deposits are generally small and subject to rapid exhaustion. Thus, the United States was the principal world producer for the period 1870 to 1900, when operations ceased except for two years during World War I. India was a producer of ore from 1898 through 1921, with peak output in 1916 through 1918 Canada came into production in 1901 with substantial output of ore and finished grain until 1914; the production thereafter was smaller until 1921. Madagascar has produced ore since 1910 but has had important output in only a few scattered years. South African production started in 1912
