Constantan is an alloy of copper and nickel that is extensively used, under a number of trade names, as a resistance wire with a low temperature coefficient of resistance, and one of the elements of base-metal thermocouples, iron usually being the other thermoelement, although for low-temperature work copper is also used. Before the war, constantan was imported, in common with many other technical necessities. Since it required considerable time to receive the constantan after it was ordered, fairly large stocks were kept on hand; but after the beginning of the war no more was imported and the stocks of foreign material were exhausted about the same time that the steel and munition manufacturers began to need great quantities of it for thermocouples for the heat treatment of steel. To meet this demand, the International Nickel Co. began manufacturing constantan that met all the requirements of the users of resistance wire but did not give the same electromotive force against iron as the German material and consequently could not be used with instruments calibrated for a definite e.m.f.-temperature relation. It so happened that all the constantan made had an e.m.f. lower than that necessary to meet the specifications of the Leeds & Northrup Co. for whom this investigation was carried out. If some had been higher and some lower, good wire could have been obtained by a process of selection, but as it was no wire at all could be procured. To remedy this situation, a thorough investigation was started with the close cooperation of the International Nickel Co. and the Electrical Alloys Co. The specifications to which the constantan had to conform were that it should give an e.m.f. of 47.40 millivolts against pure iron at 1500" F. (816" C.) with the cold-junction temperature at 0" F., or a proportional e.m.f. at temperatures near 1500" F. The method of checking a wire was as follows: It was first welded to a piece of iron wire; Armco iron was found to be satisfactory but iron with greater than 0.1 per cent. carbon would give a lower e.m.f. against the same piece of constantan than pure iron. In order to test the performance of ZrO, (CaO) and Tho,(Yz03) electrolytes in the electrochemical determination of oxygen activities in liquid metals at steel-rrzakitng temperatures , electromotive force measurements have been made with the following cells: The oxygen-- activities are calculated from the electmrnotive forces for the investigated systems. The standard free energy of- formation of MnO and the activity of manganese in Fe-Mn melts are derived. Indications are that the Zr 0z(Ca0) electrolyte exhibits little electronic conductivity at oxygen pressures as low as 10'a atnz at 1600°C; however, the partial electronic conductivity may become noticeable at lower oxygen activities. The Tho,(Yz03) electrolyte is found to be an ionic conductor at the oxygen pressure as low as that for the Mn + MnO equilibrium, but exhibits partial electronic conductivity at oxygen pressures higher than 10"1 atm (1500°C). fi. better control of oxidation and deoxidation reactions in steelmaking may be facilitated if the oxygen activity in the steel is known during various stages of the process. In the present work oxygen activities have been measured in liquid iron, manganese, and iron alloys with galvanic cells using ZrOz(CaO) and s solid electrolytes with the object of establishing the range of oxygen pressure in which these materials can be used as electrolytes at steelmaking temperatures. Calcia-stabilized zirconia and Tho2-Y203 solid solutions are oxygen ion conductors. Such electrolytes were first used by Kiukkola and Wagner1 and Peters and ~ann' in galvanic cells for the determination of thermodynamicquantities of oxide systems in the temperature range 700" to 1200°C. At these moderate temperatures calcia-stabilized zirconia has been found to exhibit predominantly ionic conductivity at oxygen pressures as low as those for the Cr + Crz03 equilibrium,394 but at lower oxygen pressures elec- tronic contribution to conductivity becomes significants4 The Th02-Y203 solid solutions are ionic conductors at oxygen pressures lower than those applicable to zirconia base electrolytes.5'6 At high oxygen pressures Thoz base electrolytes exhibit significant p-type semiconduction. At the time the present experiments were carried out several papers1'-* were published on the electrochemical determination of oxygen activities in liquid iron using the ZrOz(CaO) electrolyte. The results of different authors do not agree well. For instance, according to Fischer and ~ckermann" stabilized zirconia can be used to measure oxygen contents in liquid iron larger than 0.02 wt pct, but according to Baker and west1' ZrOz(CaO) cannot be used for the determination of oxygen content in liquid iron because of high electronic contribution to the conductivity. Fig. 1 is a schematic diagram of the apparatus used. About 500 g of liquid metal is contained in a crucible into which a stabilized zirconia or Th02(Y203) tube is immersed. A platinum contact wire is pressed (with a spring mechanism) against the inside bottom wall of the electrolyte tube. The tube is flushed continuously with a stream of air, CO-CO, (or Hz-C02) (at 0.96 atm and at a rate of about 300 cu cm per min), via an alumina tube inserted inside the electrolyte tube. This alumina tube also contains the Pt-Pt/10 pct Rh thermocouple. A capillary alumina tube shielding the other contact wire is immersed in the melt. The molybdenum contact wires were used mostly; in some cases platinum wire was employed. Molybdenum has the advantage that it dissolves more slowly in the melt than platinum. The whole cell was contained in the alumina reaction tube of a resistance furnace with molybdenum winding. The reaction tube was closed gas tight at both ends and flushed continuously with argon. The generation of operating information for mineral beneficiation processes has become more sophisticated as a result of the use of improved laboratory analytical techniques, some of which provide multiple component assays, as well as the introduction and gradual industrial acceptance of process sensors for the measurement of flow, density, size, and chemical composition. In general, however, the mineral processing engineer's ability to tie together this wealth of information has not kept pace with these developments. In fact, in almost all existing plants, the metallurgical inflow-output balance, wed to indicate current process performance, is still being calculated from only a small portion of the information routinely available. There is substantial activity in the development of techniques for using all available process information to significantly improve the reliability of the metallurgical balance. While the use of these improved techniques does require access to computing facilities and a slight change in perspective on the part of the mineral processing engineer regarding the inviolability of process information, there are numerous practical benefits to be derived from their application. In addition to summarizing some of the concepts basic to these techniques, this paper describes the experience of the author in applying one of these advanced metallurgical balance techniques to a variety of pilot plant and commercial plant flowsheets during the past eight years.

The district in which these veins are found is characterized as a rolling country, with low rounded bills of syenitic granite, overlain on the flanks of the hills by Silurian limestones, which lie in nearly horizontal beds, and in some places are so fine in texture as to afford lithographic stone of a fair quality. The gold-bearing veins run north and south through this belt of syenitic granite, and are quartz-filled true fissures, with micaccous or talcoid slates forming the walls of and horses in the veins. There are seven basic comminution circuits that can be used to prepare beneficiation feed from the product of a primary crusher. This paper gives a comparison of these circuits based on average process and economical data. The paper is principally devoted to a discussion of the test work required to obtain the process data needed to evaluate each circuit. The results of the test work in conjunction with geographic and economic factors can be used to narrow down the choice of possible circuits to one, two, or three before making a detailed engineering study.

WITH the development of thin film techniques for the direct examination of metals in the electron microscope some new problems in quantitative metallography have become apparent. In order to obtain certain contrast effects in the electron optical image when examining thin films from alloys containing dispersed phases, it is essential to use films of a thickness at least two or three times greater than that of the mean particle diameter of the dispersed phase. All pilot and commercial plants working with Mesabi Range taconite employ wet magnetic separation. Progress is being made with a dry magnetic process,9-11 but this has not yet been applied to taconite except in the laboratory and pilot plants. Flowsheets in all five plants are similar, including multiple stages of grinding, each followed by magnetic separation, which rejects a finished tailing. The flowsheet in Fig. 1 is used in the preliminary and commercial plants of the Erie and Reserve mining companies and in Unit C of Oliver's Pilotac plant. At Erie the desliming operation is omitted. In the Reserve plants two ball mills are used with each rod mill. Pilotac uses flowsheet 2 in Unit A-B and has also tested flowsheet 3. Principal differences in the three flowsheets are the number of grinding stages and the type of roughing. The terms open- circuit roughing and closed-circuit roughing are best defined by the diagrams.

A GLANCE at the list of papers1 that have been published since 1920 on the general subject of flotation suggests the variety of ideas that exist regarding the underlying cause of the phenomenon. Among these ideas, we find several coherent theories, but none that adequately and completely explain the phenomenon. Ralston2 and Bains3 suggested an electrical theory which has to do with the attachment of mineral particles to a bubble by the attraction of unlike electrical charges. This theory has its root in the fact that a bubble of air in pure water is electrified in such a way that the surface is negatively charged while the body of the water is positively charged. This result, which was first discussed by Helmholtz, also obtains when the water contains anything except a high concentration of hydrogen ions, or ions which are trivalent or tetravalent. The theory also holds that the mineral particles have positive charges on their surfaces, and so there is attachment between bubble surface and mineral particles by the old law of electrostatics, which states that unlike charges attract.

Effects of heavy metal ions on the growth and the activities of iron and sulfur oxidation of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans were investigated. Mercuric, silver, and stannous ions inhibited both of the growth and the iron- oxidizing enzyme system of the bacterium. On the other hand, uranyl ion inhibited the growth, but it gave almost no effect on the iron-oxidizing enzyme system. The inhibitory effect of uranyl sulfate on the growth of the bacterium is intensified on lowering the cultivating ' temperature from 28 ºC to 7 ºC. In the concentration of 10-3M, cadmium and copper ions inhibited colloidal sulfur-oxidizing activity of the cells 69 and 52 %, respectively, though they did not inhibit the iron-oxidizing activity at all in the concentration. On the contrary, stannous chloride did not givr any effect on the sulfur-oxidizing activity of the cells, though it inhibited the iron-oxidizing activity 55 % in the concentration of 10-3M. Several differences were observed among the cytochrome systems of cell-free extracts of the cells grown on iron and on sulfur.

The application of a simple, two-dimensional computer technique for evaluating rock burst potential in cut-and-fill stopes was investigated. The principal purpose of the study was to compare the effectiveness of high-modulus fill and destressing as aids in the control of rock bursts. Two conclusions that are probably of general applicability are drawn. First, high-modulus fill is ineffective as a means of increasing the mine stiffness and acts to control rock bursts only if it supports enough load to reduce substantially the stresses on the unmined vein material. Second, destressing is most effective if it is performed when the vein material is near the point of failure.

AgInTe2, CuInTe2, and all Proportions of CuxAg1-xInTe, forMed homogeneous single phase alloys after direct solidification from the nielt. X-ray analysis indicated a zinc-blel~de strzccture typical of the chalcopyrite compounds, and the electrical resistivity and Sccbeck coefficient values were in the semiconducting range. AuInTe, and AuxA4g,-, InTe, formed by what appeared to be a peritectic reaction (the thermal analysis curves showing more than one arrest) and were conseyue~ztly polyphase. Substitution of copper into AgIrzTe, resulted in a continuous transition in the room tenzperature Seebeck coefficient from the negative AgIzTe, to the positive CuInTe,. A zero coefficient was obtained at about Cuo.55 Ago.45 InTe, . The temperatzire variation was similar to that observed for the stoichiometric compounds, that zs, tendency towards "p" concEuction at elevated temperatures. The thernzoelectric figure of merit for the compo~uzds, as determined by the Putley -Harmnn method were in the range 10- to 10-7 "K-l; the thermal conductivities in the order of 0.15 cal per sec-cm-oK. INCREASED interest in semiconducting intermetallic substances is expanding much of recent research from simple binary compounds into polyatomic systems and solid solutions. Ternary compounds A' represent a covalent extension of the binary semiconductors Within the a tin isoelec-tronic series, Ag-Cd-In-Sn-Sb-Te-I, divalent cadmium atoms in CdTe are being substituted for by monovalent silver and trivalent indium atoms to form the compound AgInTe, . By cross-substitution with elements of other isoelectronic series, a great number of ternary compounds A 'B"'c? is possible. In all of them, however, a necessary though not sufficient condition for the covalent, semiconducting bond—that there be four sharing orbital electrons per atom—must be fulfilled. In AgInTe,, each silver or indium atom is tetrahedrally surrounded by four tellurium atoms, while each tellurium atom is co-valently bound to two silver and two indium atoms. Synthetic chalcopyrites A'B"'c~ were first recognized as potential semiconduct&rs by Goodman and Douglas.' Austin, Goodman, and Pengelly discuss preparation difficulties and some electronic measurements on AgInS, , AgInSe, CuInSe, , AgInTe, , and CuInTe,. Chalcopyrites A B c2v are mentioned in papers attempting to classify and predict semiconducting behavior of intermetallic compounds; on the basis of saturated tetrahedral sp3 bonds,3 by specific selection criteria,' and by crystallographic considerations."

THIS paper deals with the results obtained and the techniques employed in determining: I. Liquidus and solidus temperatures of the HH and HT type heat-resistant alloys. † 2. The relation of true temperatures (thermocouple) to apparent temperatures (optical pyrometer) for the molten HH and HT type alloys. This work was the outgrowth of needing to know something definite about these temperatures in order to study the effect of pouring temperatures, shake-out times, and heat-treatments on the properties of some heat-resistant alloys. The information developed is thought to be of interest to industry for guidance in foundry practices and the industrial heat applications of the alloys. This paper is based upon work that has been done for the Alloy Casting Institute at Battelle Memorial Institute. LIQUIDUS AND SOLIDUS TEMPERATURES OF HH AND HT TYPE ALLOYS Experimental Procedures Temperature-time curves were obtained during the cooling and solidification of several HH and HT type alloys. The metal was melted in an Ajax high-frequency induction furnace and poured into a coresand mold for cooling. The temperature measurements were obtained by means of a platinum, platinumrhodium thermocouple contained within a fused silica sheath, which was extended through the side wall of the dry core-sand mold to a point at about the center of the mold cavity, which was 3 in. in diameter by 5 in. deep. The cold junction of the thermocouple was kept in an ice bottle, and the temperature was recorded automatically on a direct-reading potentiometer recorder. Through a switching arrangement, the temperature recorded was checked occasionally with a portable Leeds and Northrup potentiometer indicator. Less than a 5°F. variation in the two instruments was always found. This is within the limit of accuracy of readings. The thermocouple used was checked for accuracy against a standard couple, both before use on this work and after completion of the work, by the instrument laboratory. Temperature-time Cooling Curves Fig. I is an enlarged reproduction of a part of one of the cooling curves over the temperature range of 2600° to 2200°F. for an alloy of the HT type with 0.45 per cent carbon, 16 per cent chromium, and 36 per cent nickel. A platelet form of zirconium hydride was found in zirconium and ZY-1 wt pct U single crystals containing hydvogen in the range of 50 to 100 ppm. The habit planes for the hydride plateletg in the zirconium crystals were found to be {1012}, {1121}, and (1122) while the habit planes in the ZY-1 wt pct U crystals were {1121), {1123}, and (1.231). With the exception of the {1231} plane, these have been identified as the twin planes in zirconium. The different effect of hydridc on the mechanical puoperlies of zirconium at high and low strain rates has been explained in terms of the defornzation mechanism and the habit planes of the hydride. ZIRCONIUM and zirconium-base alloys are considered for many nuclear reactor applications, where the pick-up of hydrogen is a distinct possibility, if not an unavoidable occurrence. An excellent example of this is the absorption of hydrogen by zirconium and its alloys during aqueous corrosion, where as much as 30 pct of the hydrogen produced by the corrosion reaction is picked up by the metal. Under the proper conditions, the absorbed hydrogen would precipitate as zirconium hydride and consequently alter the mechanical and physical properties of the zirconium-base alloys. The knowledge obtained from a study of the crystallographic aspects of the hydride precipitation is necessary for the interpretation of the observed changes in the mechanical and physical properties. The deleterious effect of hydrogen on zirconium-base materials is not always observed in normal slow tensile loadings at or above room temperature, but becomes immediately obvious under impact loading, where the energy absorbed decreases with increasing hydrogen content,' and in notched specimens where triaxial loadings are attained.2 This effect is of serious consequence in the applications of Zr where shock loads or high strain rates are experienced. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the crystallographic planes of the Zr and Zr-1 wt pct U matrices upon which zirconium hydride will precipitate and to correlate these with the observed mechanical property data. PROCEDURE Crystal Growth—Single crystals of Zr and Zr-1 wt pct U alloy were used in this investigation. The Zr crystals were made from sponge that had a typical analysis as shown in Table I. Large grains were grown in this material by rapid cooling an arc-melted charge in a button furnace. This operation undoubtedly lowered the volatile impurity concentration below those listed in Table I. Back-reflection Laue patterns of these large grains showed the presence of considerable substructure and lattice distortion within each grain. It was found that an 18-day anneal in an argon atmosphere at 840°C (a high a heat-treatment) followed by furnace cooling, resulted in the further growth of the large grains and removed the detectable substructure ana lattice distortion. Equiaxed crystals with a cube edge of approximately 1/4 in. were produced in this manner. Large crystals of Zircaloy-2 (1.5 wt pct Sn, 0.15 wt pct Fe, 0.1 wt pct Cr, 0.05 wt pct Ni) also were produced by this technique but the large amount of substructure formed could not be removed by annealing. The Zr-1 wt pct U solid solution crystals were produced from an alloy rod consisting of Westing-house-Foote hafnium-free crystal bar zirconium and depleted uranium. The chemical analysis of the alloy is also given in Table I. Three-inch sections were cut from an 0.120-in.-diameter alloy rod and tapered to a fine point on each end. The samples were sealed in evacuated Vycor tubes, homogenized for 5 hr at 1000°C in the ß-phase field, and slowly lowered in a gradient furnace into the a phase (800°C), annealed for 60 hr at this temperature to produce grain growth and furnace cooled. This technique produced large grains approximately 1/2 to 3/4 in. long over the entire cross section of the rod, which were free of observable substructure. Metallographic examination up to X1000 did not show the existence of any second phase in these grains. Crystal Orientation—All crystals were abraded on fine emery paper to produce two flat surfaces 90 deg to each other. The crystals were analyzed by the standard Back-Reflection Laue technique to obtain the crystal orientation with respect to the abraded surfaces. The Back-Reflection Laue Photograms of all crystals used were clear and sharp indicating that the crystals were free from any substructure that could be detected by these means. Hydriding—Only samples containing four to five grains were used for hydriding. Samples that exhibited fine grained patches were discarded. The samples were hydrided using the following technique. I learned recently in Europe of a process employed with considerable success at one of the blast-furnaces, where blast-furnace cinder is used with lime. The lime and cinder are mixed with the flue-dust, and exposed to superheated steam, which converts the blast-furnace cinder into cement. Briquettes are then formed in the usual way. Mr. Vogel :—The process referred to is the " Scoria process," which has not been in use for some time past. For that reason, I did not mention it. Prof. Arthur L. Walker, New York, N. Y.:—I would ask the commercial name for magnesium chloride, and where it can be obtained ? Mr. VoGel :—I mentioned magnesium chloride, because it has been used abroad to a large extent. Some rock mechanics theorists believe that if a hydraulically placed backfill can be introduced in a stoped out area, which will minimize wall closure by taking high stresses across the fill with minimum compaction, then heavy ground and rock burst phenomena will be minimized. The paper will discuss a large scale laboratory project when fill strength was increased over four times by the head vibrated method and up to well over 20 times by the double placed, cemented, vibrated head method when compared to conventionally placed fills. The only preconditioning of the 60% solids by weight slurry was the addition of cement in some tests.
