Georgia, since 1829, has produced nearly $18,000,000 from her gold mines, but in late years the output has dwindled to insignificance. In view of present universal efforts to increase gold production, it seems pertinent to record some recent observations in that field, briefly review its past and weigh probabilities of reviving gold mining there. Little in this paper can be claimed as new or original, and it does not present results of a detailed or profound investigation of the whole region. The Allatoona gold mine was reopened in January, 1932, and explored at greater depth during the period from January to June of that year. A number of other abandoned mines were visited, but since the workings, in common with most such mines in Georgia, were flooded or caved, underground conditions could not be examined. For a wider knowledge of the subject, a search was made through available pertinent literature and statistics, a bibliography of which is appended hereto. To all the sources obligations are gratefully acknowledged. Production The discovery of gold in Georgia, in 1829, led to an influx of 6000 to 7000 miners and a production of over $200,000 in the following year. A branch of the United States Mint, established at Dahlonega in 1838, accounted for $6,115,569 up to the time of the Civil War. The output fluctuated greatly from year to year, with an all-time peak of $582,782 in 1843. In only one other year, 1845, was the half million mark exceeded. After the war mining began again, but 1883 is the last year for which an output of $200,000 is reported. Placers, always the main source of production, were yielding less and less, and in spite of increased quartz-mining activities the downward trend continued. The last year in which there was a production of $100,000 was 1902. In 1914, $16,270 came from 26 placers and 11 deep mines, with the latter reporting 1750 tons of $3 average value. In 1925, one placer and four lode mines that mined 8100 tons assaying $1.19 per ton produced $9500. One placer and one quartz mine, operating in 1930, reported a total output of $4194. Table 1 pictures the waning output.

Levi Holbrook was born in Westboro, Mass., March 7, 1836. He was a descendant of John Holbrook, who came from England in 1660 and settled in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Mr. Holbrook was prepared for college at Williston Seminary, East-hampton, Mass., and after one year spent in the West, he entered Yale. He was a, member of Phi Beta Kappa and of Linonia. During the six months following his graduation he was in Boston, under medical treatment for his cyes; then he took a horseback trip across the Rocky Mountains to the Columbia River and back, and resided in Danville, Va., for a time. From 1860 to 1863, as his eyes permitted, he was a student of modern languages and literature in Cambridge, Mass., part of the time being a resident graduate at Harvard University. Finally, however, he was obliged to abandon the idea of a literary life and from 1864 to 1867 he was engaged in financial business in Boston. The following year, he spent in New York, and then traveled for a year in Europe, Egypt and Asia Minor. In 1871, he returned to New York City. Mr. Holbrook was a member of the New England Historic Gcncalogical Society, the Society of Colonial Wars, and the Sons of the Revolution, was registrar general of the Order of the Founders and Patriots of America from 1915 to 1920, and had been governor of the New York society of that order. He was also a member of the American Fine Arts Society, the Order of the Cincinnati, the American Geographical Society (of which he was a councillor and secretary). and the Geographical Society of America. He joined the American Institute of Mining Engineers in 1878, and served as manager from 1895 to 1897. Mr. Holbrook died on July 26, 1922, from organic heart trouble, at his residence in Center Harbor, N. H. He was married Dec. 27, 1871, in Newark, N. Y., to Viola, daughter of John A, and Elizabeth (Failing)Vowers, who died on Sept. 10, less than six weeks after her husband. His two children, Clark Holbrook of Red Bank, N. J., and Mrs. Julian P. Smith, survive him

In oral discussion at the Columbus midyear meeting, September 26, 1949, these pertinent questions were asked: Was a satisfactory separation of metal and matte obtained? The matte was quite fluid and in most cases the separation was satisfactory. Were the mattes chlorinated after aging? The mattes were stored in sealed glass mason jars, and chlorina-tion experiments made after standing for several weeks gave satisfactory results. Was ferric chloride volatilized? Most of the iron content of the matte was converted to ferric chloride. However, because of the low chlorination temperatures used (150" to 250°C) the major part of the ferric chloride remained with the residue. Undoubtedly, some ferrous chloride was also formed, because of the reducing conditions within the reaction vessel, but no effort was made to separate it from the ferric chloride. Could the reaction be stopped before making metallic iron? No attempt was ever made to stop the reaction before making metallic iron. Generally, 20 to 60 pct of the iron in the charge was obtained as metallic iron which could be readily separated from the matte. In certain cases, metallic iron was dispersed through the matte in the form of globules, which could be removed by magnetic separation. Could other sulphides, i.e., calcium sulphide or sodium sulphide be used in place of iron sulphide? No other sulphides were investigated. It was felt that titanates of calcium and sodium would be formed should these sulphides be used to replace the pyrite. What were the sulphur volatilization losses during matte smelting? In the course of this laboratory investigation, a rather wide variety of variables was introduced from highly oxidizing to reducing conditions and various ratios of pyrite, rutile, and coke. These and other factors all have a definite bearing on the sulphur losses. In general, the higher the sulphur in the charge the higher were the sulphur losses and the percentage of titanium in the matte decreased. With sulphur additions more nearly the theoretical amount, the sulphur losses averaged approximately 10 to 15 pct. With a higher percentage of sulphur on the charges, the losses were in the order of 15 to 30 pct.

Lieut. Maxwell E. Erdory, now with the Army of Occupation in France, writes as follows: "The 602d Engrs., many of whose officers are members of the Institute, started its active service in France at Avocourt, where we built a road across `No Man's Land.' This road from Avocourt to Montfaucon started us on a career of road building which lasted from Sept. 26 to Nov. 9. The engineer in war has no working hours. Our first job meant 50 hr. continuous work, a layoff of 4 hr. and 18 hr. more. That was our initiation in this war game. "Back in the States we practised building trenches, dugouts, and underground shelters of all sorts. In France we were unfortunate enough to come upon the scene when the so-called open warfare started. That made all the above unnecessary. Roads was the cry and our job was to see that all the artillery got their roads and got over them. "I might mention here that the roads of France, which were in excellent condition except for numerous shell holes, w re one of the leading factors in the rapid termination of the war. "We built a narrow-gage railroad from Romagne to Landre St. George which cost us a few men. At Stenay we did our first bridge building. We built nine bridges across the Meuse, capable of carrying tanks, in 18 hr. The next day the American army crossed these bridges on their way to Virton, Belgium, and the Rhine. " Our course from Virton, Belgium, took us through Longwy, Musson, and Athus, in which towns I inspected the steel plants. In Musson as well as Longwy the Germans had destroyed most of the blast furnaces. This destruction began in August, 1917. In Athus the furnaces were in good condition, the Germans having removed all motors land electrical apparatus, rendering the plant inoperative. I have taken several photos of interest of these plants. "It is but fitting that I say that the engineer in this war has contributed much toward its success but the "Doughboy" is its hero and we engineers one and all say "All hail the Doughboy."

THE indexing of a field-ion micrograph is in many cases similar to the indexing of the poles of a stereo-graphic projection.* If one has a standard projection as a guide, the task of indexing is relatively simple. In this way, field-ion micrographs of bcc and fcc wires have been oriented from projections available in most any text on X-ray diffraction. These books always illustrate the projections for the bcc and fcc structures and even for a particular hcp structure. There is no "standard" hcp projection because the angles between planes depend on the c/o ratio of the unit cell. In order to index field-ion micrographs of hcp metals, one must compute the angles between various planes—a rather laborious task. In recent work,, we have had to identify the structure and index the orientation of field-ion micrographs of the compounds WC and W,C. To overcome the problem of computing angles by hand or calculator, a program was written in Fortran lV for use on the IBM 360, Model 50 which will compute all angles between planeswith indices (hlklll) and (17,k,l2) in the range from (447) to (444) for any given c/o ratio. The program, which is more specific than that of Camp and clum, was so written as to take advantage of the multiplicity of the hexagonal system, and, for the limits defined above, only 26,649 values out of a possible 265,721 values had to be computed. This is a 90 pct saving in time (and cost) and was accomplished in the following way. Because the lattice parameters of the hexagonal crystal system are defined such that: a = b * c [1] the I index does not enter into the multiplicity (i.e., it cannot be transposed with the h or k indices), and all possible values of h and I, from 4 to 4 must be used—a total of eighty-one combinations. The index h2 varies the most—it must assume values from - Ill,: to 3Ihl. The indices kl and k2 are always equal and vary

The Hidden Dome gas field, situated in Washakie County, Wyoming, was discovered Sept. 26, 1917. Subsequently five additional gas wells were completed and a large reserve was developed. For a number of years this field completely supplied the domestic market at Basin and Greybull, as well as the refinery at the latter town, and it is still supplying gas in small amounts to this market. Production is obtained from the sands of the Frontier formation at depths ranging from 1000 to 1500 ft. The original rock pressure was 725 Ib. and initial production ranged from 4,000,000 to 28,000,000 cu. ft. per day per well. Porosity of the sand, determined from the size of the productive area and the amount of gas recovered, is over 18 per cent. Area and Management It is estimated that the productive area is about 640 acres. Its outline is indicated on Fig. 5, on which are also shown the locations of holes drilled on the structure and the area of unit operation. The unit area is owned by the Ohio Oil Co. and development and operation have been by this company. No productive well has been completed outside this area. The entire area was Government land filed on under the placer mining law. Results of Unit Operation With six producing wells, or an average of one to each 160 acres, the pool is completely developed. Location of the wells was made with respect to structural conditions plus the requirement that at least one well be drilled on each 160-acre placer claim. Perhaps a somewhat more uniform spacing of the wells might have been accomplished and one well eliminated, but it must be borne in mind that the holes, on account of their shallow depth, were not expensive and that the object was to develop as reliable a reserve as possible. There is no cause to suspect that these holes have not adequately drained the reservoir and there is every reason to think that any additional wells, which might have been drilled under diversified ownership and operation, would have been an economic waste. Payne, New York City: Prof. Blake's inference that magnetic separation may be successfully employed upon smithsonite and iron oxide, after a preliminary roasting, is confirmed by the fact that this separation has been carried on with entire success for over a year at the works of the Wythe Lead and Zinc Mine Co., Austinville, Va. The ore mined on this property is a mixture consisting chiefly of galenite, smithsonite and limonite. The crude material is crushed, screened and washed in log washers for the removal of clay, and then jigged for the separation of the galenite. The zinc-and iron-ores are then roasted in reverberatory furnaces, being turned and moved towards the bridge-end of the hearth by manual labor. The roasted material contains from 20 to 26 per cent. of metallic iron. The slight difference in the specific gravities and the friable condition of the ores after roasting prevent the separation of the oxides by means of jigging. It was therefore the practice, previous to the use of magnetic separation, to charge the roasted material directly into the retorts of the zinc-furnaces. The rapid cutting of the retorts under this practice proved a serious inconvenience and expense. In the spring of 1892, the writer built for the Wythe Lead and Zino Mine Co. a magnetic separator which embodied several novel features and which was designed to treat the roasted zinc- and ironoxides. This separator has proved entirely successful for the purpose for which it was designed. During the first nine months of its operation, 1415 tons of 2240 pounds of roasted material were passed through the separator, producing about 675 tons of heads carrying from 50 to 55 per cent, of metallic iron, which are sold to a neighboring blast-furnace. The tailings, which contain the zinc, carry from 4 to 6 per cent. of metallic iron. For magnetizing the iron-ore previous to separating it from the zinc-ore, no change whatever mas made in the form of the reverberatory furnace previously employed. The benefits of proration of oil production were perhaps more concretely realized in 1932 than at any time since the oil industry adopted nation-wide production control. Reduced output of crude petroleum, which brought the daily average of the United States down to approximately 2,000,000 bbl. from a peak in 1931 of more than 2,600,000, had a telling effect on the trend of oil prices. Mid-Continent crude was advanced in price from 776, for 36-gravity oil, to $1.04 a barrel. California crude, of 26-gravity at Signal Hill, moved forward from 736 to 976 a barrel. Pennsylvania crude, the only exception to the upward trend, rose in price from $1.82 per barrel to $2.02, only to react to $1.72. This was due to local conditions which necessitated an adjustment to overcome competition from other areas of the United States. East Texas continued to exert a far-reaching influence on the crude and gasoline market during 1932. Despite the fact that oil prices were advanced in most fields, large quantities of oil were produced in East Texas in violation of state proration orders, and sold in the market at prices considerably below official postings. This created competitive conditions in the gasoline market that were felt by all refining centers of the United States. The quantity of gasoline produced from cheap East Texas crude was not large, but the volume was sufficient to influence prices in practically all sections of the country. Thus, while the industry's' economic situation showed visible improvement statistically, the unreported and unseen statistics originating in East Texas proved to be an insurmountable obstacle to the economic betterment that was otherwise apparently justified. Somewhat surprising to many was the fact that gasoline consumption was maintained within 10 per cent of the preceding year. Domestic consumption showed only a net decline under 1931 of about 8.5 per cent; exports dropped in volume to the extent of about 23 per cent. New Mexico retained its position as the sixth largest oil-producing state for the year 1937 with a total production of 38,484,630 bbl. This was an increase of 11,680,184 bbl. over the 1936 production of 26,804,446 bbl., or a gain of 43 per cent. The production for Lea County during 1937 was 35,961,056 bbl.; for Eddy County, 2,136,251 bbl.; and for northwestern New Mexico (San Juan and McKinley Counties), 387,323 bbl. The average daily non-marginal well allowable for Lea County on Jan. 1, 1937, was 92 bbl.; at the close of the year it was 67 bbl. The average daily pipe-line runs were less than the allocations of the New Mexico Oil Conservation Commission, but slightly in excess of the state allowables recommended by the United States Bureau of Mines. The average daily production for the year was 105,437 barrels. The total number of completions in the state was 742, of which 638 were oil wells; 19 hydrocarbon gas wells; 5 carbon dioxide gas wells and 80 dry holes. Of the dry holes, 46 were in proven fields. Of these 46 dry holes, 13 were in the Artesia-Grayburg-Jackson-Maljamar area, Eddy County, two in the Getty Extension field, Eddy County, 11 in the Red Mountain field, McKinley County, three in the Rattlesnake field, San Juan County, and nine in the Aztec-Bloomfield area, San Juan County. There were only eight dry holes in the proven fields in Lea County. Southeastern New Mexico Lea County.—The Monument field was the largest producing field in Lea County, with 10,945,788 bbl., closely followed by the Eunice field with 10,927,929 bbl. The Hobbs field, formerly the largest producing field in Lea County, was relegated to third .place, with 7,292,522 barrels. Drjlling during the year closed the gap between the northern part of the Eunice field and the southern part of the Monument field. The wells in this area were relatively small, because of decreased porosity in the lime. The greatest activity in Lea County was in the Monument pool, with 199 completions, 197 being oil wells, one a gas well and one a dry hole.

I. INTRODUCTION THE geological field work of the Bully Hill district, upon which this paper is based, was begun July 1, 1908, and covered a period of three months. The time was found too short for a complete report and the district was again visited in the early part of July, 1912,. from which time detailed study of the locality continued until September of the same year. This paper is the result of observations made in the mines in the immediate vicinity of Winthrop, Shasta county, Cal., during these two periods of study. The preparation of this report has been greatly facilitated by various courtesies rendered the writer by D. M. Riordan, President of the Bully Hill Copper Mining & Smelting Co., and by John B. Keating and Herbert R. Hanley, managing officers actively in charge at the mines. The elaboration and further study of the notes and collections were carried on in the laboratories of the Departments of Geology and Mining at Columbia University, and the writer takes pleasure also at this point in expressing his acknowledgments to Profs. James F. Kemp, A. W. Grabau, Charles P. Berkey, and William Campbell, for advice and assistance. In order that one may appreciate at first reading the significance of some of the details which follow, and for the sake of clearness, a brief outline of the geological relationships is here given, together with certain conclusions which have been reached regarding the genesis. of the ores and the gypsum masses. In the Bully Hill mining district an associated series of Triassic lavas and tuffs, chiefly andesites, is preceded as well as followed by sediments. The entire system is tilted so that the original bedding planes dip in general to the southeast. The surrounding region has been greatly disturbed, and in the immediate vicinity of the mines close folding of the later sediments and extreme shearing of the igneous rocks locally is a striking feature. Into the nearly vertical shear zones have been intruded post-Triassic dikes of various rock types in the following order: alaskite-porphyry and andesite-porphyry. Outside the area under consideration diorite dikes are known, but they will not receive attention further than to note that' they, probably, represent a differentiation product of the same magma from which the other two dikes came. In this connection all the dikes have an important bearing on the origin of the ores and of the gypsum found in the mines.

An approach for predicting the development of mineral resources on public lands has been developed as an aid to resource agencies. It consists of new techniques for evaluating the economic potential of the resource, the uncertainty about mine cost estimates, and the uncertainty about the occurrance of mineral deposits. New mineral sup- plies from inferred and hypothetical resources can be predicted by using these techniques. A case study illustrates their application in predicting development of copper resources in western Montana.

Bearing these two points in mind, I have from time to time published observations with a view to unite both interests,—that of the producer and that of the consumer,—and to reduce the specifications and the forms of sections to standards, or types, in order to facilitate the execution of the works and to improve the construction of permanent way. The Swedish government railways, as well as private companies owning railways in Sweden, Norway, and Denmark,.have during the time above mentioned consulted with me and intrusted to me their rail inspection. I therefore owe to these countries much of the opportunity which I have enjoyed of gaining experience and position. Next to Sweden, America is the country which has most liberally favored me with its confidence in placing these matters in my hands. Through circumstances not under my control there has been little exportation to, and less work done by Europe for, America during the last six years; but the recent revival of the rail trade has been the more gratifying to mo, seeing that almost all the importers of American rails are still specifying for the Sandberg rail sections and inspection. It is therefore with feelings of gratitude that I now beg to lay before the American Institute of Mining Engineers, and I hope, through that body, before the American railway world, the results of some experience which I have gained in the execution of work for their country, and which therefore belongs rightfully to

1. Introduction.-The first part of this papers treats of the causes and the restraining of piping in steel ingots; the second& considers the causes and the restraining of -segregation; and the third proposes certain precautions in engineering specifications concerning these two defects. Into their causes I have looked carefully, with the purpose of arriving at rational methods of restraining them, and at efficient ways of detecting. and measuring the harm which they cause, so as to benefit the public by reducing this harm at once effectively and with the least expense to the manufacturer, and therefore in the end with the least expense to the consumer. In Part I., I infer that the pipe is chiefly due to what I, call the virtual expansion of the outer walls of the ingot in the early part of the freezing. I find that the upper and smooth-faced part of the pipe probably forms while the interior is still molten, but that the lower, steep, and crystal-faced part probably forms in metal which is already firm. Of the five causes which may co-operate to limit the depth of the pipe, I find that three-blow-holes, sagging, and the progress of freezing from below upwards-are usually effective. I find that the pipe may be lessened by casting (1) in wide ingots,; (2) in sand molds, especially if these are pre-heated (this is rarely expedient); (3) at the tops instead of at the bottom; (4) slowly; (5) and with the large end up; (6) by the use of a sinking-head or other means of retarding the cooling of the top; (7) by permitting blow-holes to form; and (8) by liquid compression.) Most of these I consider in some detail, and in particular I dwell on the advantages of casting with the large end up, and I propose certain administrative arrangements to permit this.

Up to the present time few attempts have been made to produce hard nonmagnetic materials by heat treatment of austenitic steels. The usual result has been to cause them to pass into the martensitic stage, thus destroying to a great extent the typical austenitic properties, since this involves a transition of a portion of the iron from a face-centered to a body-centered type of atomic arrangement. High-strength nonmagnetic materials such as might be provided by properly hardening austenite are required in the electrical industry for different machine parts. In Europe nonmagnetic retainer rings for restraining the end-turns of the rotor windings in turbo-alternators have been developed as a special application of high-strength austenite. In testing1 a 28,000-kva. three-phase Siemens turbo generator running at 3000 r.p.m. at full load current, the losses in the short-circuit test were 450 kw. for the magnetic ring and 286 kw. for the nonmagnetic, and the difference should be attributable to the magnetic ring. The differences in temperatures during the same test are given in Table 1 and these show the advantage of a nonmagnetic over a magnetic retainer ring.

The microstructure of TD-Ni has been examined by transmission electron microscopy in the extruded, annealed. and deformed states. The tensile properties hove been correlated with the observed microstructures and the results ore com-pared with those obtained from pure nickel. The important conclusions are that the thorin particles in TD-Ni act as strong burriers to dislocntion motion during both deformation (slip) and annealing (climb). During deformation. the dislocations tangle around the particles and a cell structure is devleloped after 10 pct or more strain. The cell size appears to be determined by the spacing of the largest particles and is about five times smaller than that in pure nickel for the same strain. The higher work-hardening rate in TD-Ni compared to nickel is probably due to the more rapid rate of dislocation multiplication in the alloy as a result of dislocation-particle interactions. The Th0,particles inhibit recrystallization and twin growh so that some strengthening may arise from the high density of small annealing twins. THE strengthening of materials due to the presence of a dispersed second phase has been the subject of considerable experimental and theoretical investigation in recent years. One of the newest dispersion-strengthened alloys to be developed is TD-Ni,1 a system of approximately 2 vol pct thoria (ThO2) dispersed in a matrix of commercially pure nickel. This material is fabricated by powder-metallurgical techniques and offers high-temperature stability and useful mechanical properties virtually to the melting point of the base metal. While the mechanical properties of this system have been investigated,2,3 there have been no reports in the literature concerning the microstruc-ture of TD-Ni and its correlation to mechanical properties. This paper describes a transmission electron microscopy investigation of the micro-structure of TD-Ni together with its mechanical properties. The results are compared with the structure and properties of pure nickel.

Present-day interest in the question of "dirty steel" has arisen primarily from the increasingly rigid specifications on various grades of steel and from the growing conviction that non-metallic inclusions are the source of many of the difficulties in meeting these specifications. The importance of inclusions has unquestionably been over-emphasized in many cases, but on the other hand many unpublished instances could be recorded where all evidence pointed to inclusions as the primary cause for the failure of steel in rolling or in service. The solution of the problem of dirty steel is not a matter of a few years. There are almost numberless types of inclusions. They segregate in steel ingots in an entirely different manner from other impurities, and, at best, only a start has been made in developing correct analytical methods for their determination. Most of the writers in the field have expressed opinions rather than given facts, and so many variables enter into the manufacture of steel that a study of plant conditions is difficult unless definite facts on certain phases of the inclusion problem are available. This statement is not intended to convey the idea that little work has been done on this problem. On the other hand, the number of investigations has been large, but in most cases too many variables have been present to allow definite conclusions to be drawn. In the body of the text, reference to previous investigations is made at suitable points. Rather than burden the reader with a lengthy review of the literature on the general subject of inclusions, reference to the particular works pertinent to the subject matter of the bulletin has been discussed. In 1972, coal mine productivity was in steady decline and labor and maintenance costs were spiralling upward. Yet, despite this sad state of affairs, nowhere in the US at that time was there a comprehensive and coordinated coal research and development plan in the offing. The Bureau of Mines had not yet been charged with such a responsibility, and industry was content to rely on machinery manufacturers for innovations. It was during this period that Bethlehem Steel Corp. determined that a new approach to coal mining research was needed for the industry as well as for the company itself. After studying Bethlehem's own mining practices, the state-of-the-art of mining research elsewhere, and development work by manufacturers, a comprehensive research package was presented to company management in late 1972. The ideas and experience of many operating and management personnel in the company contributed to the formulation of the final plan as approved.

THE entrance of geophysics and geochemistry into petroleum engineering may be viewed with apprehension by some engineers. They may not remember the time when "practical oil men" opposed the invasion of engineers into the field of petroleum production. By their excellent contributions they established themselves. In the popular mind, engis veers are practical men whereas physicists and chemists are suspected of being theoretical. It will be best to annihilate this misconception right now at the beginning of a closer relationship between petroleum engineers. geophysicists, and geochemists.
