ATTENTION has been given to the sources and supply of the raw vegetal matter and. the conditions of its submission to the process of sedimentation. An original and most valuable review has been made of the more important or significant chemical compounds originally contained in the organic debris, and of the biochemical changes-undergone by the latter during deposition. Consideration also has been given to the factors controlling the selective biochemical decomposition, in whole or in part, of :this debris, and the deposition, as, sediments, of the undecomposed plant structures and compounds, together with more or less of the so-called "ulmic," or "humic," organic decomposition products in colloidal solution.1 BIOCHEMICAL CHANGES END IN PEAT FORMATION The biochemical process terminates in the peat stage of coal formation, and with the cessation of this process organic sedimentation is completed. All subsequent changes result from geological causes and conditions. The deposits are in the form of peats of different types, organic muds, oozes, etc. They are essentially uncompressed and are wholly unconsolidated, and their water content is great, amounting to over 85 per cent. near the surface of the deposit. Many of the chemical compounds remain as in the once living organisms; others are biochemically broken down and new ones formed.

I feel a certain sense of responsibility in bringing before you the subject of the direct process in iron manufacture. I am aware that, in such a body as I have now the honor of addressing, there are few who are not already so well informed upon its past history that it would be a weariness to them to listen to anything else than an account of practical success. Yet, to claim that success involves so much that, if I do not make good my claim, I deservedly expose myself to severe criticism. The whole literature of the art, so far as it relates to the direct process, is, up to this time, but a history of failure. It is safe to say that more money, time, and talent have been fruitlessly spent in the pursuit of this object than in all the other unsuccessful efforts in the whole line of iron metallurgy. A distinguished authority in patent law has remarked that " the invention records of the United States and of foreign countries are filled with the waifs and abandoned relics of these abortive struggles." Dr. Percy, whose great work may be taken as an epitome of all that was worth mention, whether useful or curious, in pig-iron metallurgy, up to the date of its publication (1864), after giving elaborate accounts of various attempts at the direct process, condenses his own opinion of all that had been then effected, into a brief but summary comment upon a pamphlet of one of the sanguine inventors who had said: "It is evident that the present mode of working iron

THE mineral magnesite, formerly the source of nearly all magnesia, now shares this role with brucite, dolomite, and the world's natural and artificial brines. The mineral magnesite is the normal carbonate of magnesium, MgCO3, composed when pure of 47.6 pct MgO and 52.4 pct CO2. It is one of the calcite (CaCO3) group of rhombohedra1 car- bonates, which also includes dolomite, CaCO3.MgCO3, and siderite, FeCO3. Magnesite does not form an isomorphous series with calcite or dolomite; consequently, these lime-bearing carbonates commonly present in magnesite deposits are there only as mechanical mixtures. Magnesite and iron carbonates form a continuous isomorphous series and therefore are inseparable mechanically. The variety of magnesite known as breunnerite is an isomorphous mixture of iron and magnesium carbonates. Magnesite may be either crystalline or amorphous (cryptocrystalline). The former, which includes breunnerite, is often termed spathic magnesite. Crystalline magnesite varies from finely to coarsely crystal- line in texture and has a hardness of 3.5 to 4. The color is white, yellowish, blue-gray to drab, red, pink, black, or mottled. It is seldom found pure but usually contains variable amounts of iron, lime, silica, and sometimes manganese. The color cannot be used as an index of purity. The cryptocrystalline variety is perhaps the more common type but the crystalline variety usually occurs in larger deposits. The amorphous type is fine grained and compact, showing no cleavage. It is usually snow white but sometimes is light to pale orange yellow or buff, owing to impurities. The fracture is conchoidal to uneven and the hardness 3.5 to 5. Silica may be present as inclusions of serpentine, quartz, chalcedony, or other minerals. The lime and iron contents are usually low. In general, amorphous magnesite is somewhat purer than the crystalline variety. The specific gravity of cryptocrystalline magnesite is 2.90 to 3.00. STRATEGICALLY situated in almost the heart of the leading fertilizer-consuming area of the United States, Tennessee long has ranked second only to Florida as a phosphate-producing state. Since 1932 its share of the national output of phosphate rock has increased steadily, and in 1937 its production mounted to an all-time record. More significant even than the increase in tonnage are the forward strides in technology. The Tennessee Valley Authority's research program has led to quasicommer-cial operations using hydroelectric power to manufacture concentrated phosphatic fertilizer that is used to further the farmer education program designed to streamline the fertilizer business and halt the appalling waste of farm land by soil erosion. Even more stimulating to chemically minded imaginations is the production of elemental phosphorus by a private company that not only has succeeded in extracting it from the phosphate rock in electric furnaces but actually has contrived to capture it and to transport it safely in tank cars. New values have been created for low-grade phosphate deposits, and the economic life of reserves has been lengthened while the waste of former years goes back into the mills for recovery of its values by modernized methods. Tennesse's phosphate-mining industry dates from the discovery of blue rock in Lewis County in December 1893. Its known reserves are of the order of 101,500,000 tons, which compares with the production of 825,099 tons in 1937; that is, 21 per cent of the phosphate-rock output of the whole nation. The total output reported from 1894 until July 1, 1938, was approximately 19,000,000 tons. Official estimates of reserves are overly conservative and evidence submitted before a joint Con-gressional committee in November 1938 places "probable" reserves at more than 6,000,000,000 tons.

The gradually increasing proportion of sulphide ores which lead smelters of to-day are called upon to handle has caused the roasting problem to become one of ever greater importance. Mines have increased in depth, methods of concentration have improved, competition in the purchase of ores has become more keen and it has been clear that new and modern methods of eliminating sulphur must receive a large share of attention. We may look back a score of years or so and recall the old hand roasters, some of which turned out a finely divided roasted product, and others fashioned with a "fuse-box" wherein the roasted ore was slagged. Then came mechanical furnaces of several types, the Bruckner cylinder, the Brown-O'Harra, the Ropp, and others, all designed to cut out the cumbersome hand labor of the old reverberatories. Roasting costs were thereupon reduced and tonnages stimulated to a gratifying extent. However, it seems to have been early recognized that this very feature of a greater amount of roasted sulphide ore as compared with oxide ore brought with it a train of difficulties at the blast furnaces. The mechanically roasted ore was fine physically, the blast furnaces were choked and the troubles of the smelterman were not at an end. Then the Huntington-Heberlein pot system of roasting appeared upon the scene, and later on the Dwight-Lloyd machines were invented, and inasmuch as both of these processes were designed not only to roast the ore but to agglomerate it as well, it was apparent that distinct steps in advance had been achieved. At the Murray plant, modern up-to-date roasting practice is fully exemplified and there are now in successful operation roasting furnaces or devices of several sorts: namely, Godfrey revolving-hearth furnaces, Wedge multiple-hearth mechanical roasters, Dwight-Lloyd sintering machines, and Huntington-Heberlein pots. Godfrey and Wedge furnaces will properly handle material high in sulphur, say ores with 25, 30, and 35 per cent. of that element; D. & L. machines and H. & H. pots will positively not treat efficiently ores or mixtures containing anywhere near the sulphur content mentioned, but are confined to charges containing in the neighborhood of 15 or 18 per cent. In passing, it may also be explained that, so far as the knowledge of the writer goes, Godfrey and Wedge furnaces do not economically eliminate sulphur to an extent

THIS paper is not the result of recent research with regard to any particular feature of iron metallurgy, blast-furnace practice or mechanical engineering. It is rather a series of notes with regard to contemporaneous progress in blast-furnace construction and operation, together with some suggestions as to changes and improvements that seem to be desirable. On April 1, 1930, a committee of the Chicago District Blast Furnace and Coke Association presented to that association a rather ambitious study of blast-furnace equipment, together with recommendations for the design of construction of a complete blast-furnace unit for the production of 1000 tons of pig iron per day. This report represented the result of months of study by members of the committee, all of whom were actively engaged in operation or design of blast-furnace plants. It is natural, therefore, that comments on the present state of the art should take this 1000-tons furnace, as recommended by the Association, as a basis for comparison with corresponding features of construction or design. See Table 1. In looking through this report at the present time, the significant difference is in the nature of the gas-washing equipment that today would be specified. In other respects, the installation would remain generally very much as it was outlined in 1930. The change in furnace dimensions would be very slight and of no especial significance, except with respect to changes in stock-line diameter, of which more will be said hereafter. The high-efficiency stove as developed by various designers is thoroughly described within this report, and few changes have taken place since. Blowing equipment shows refinement and reflects the improvement in steam engineering. ANOTHER chapter in the history of Mother Lode mining is being written by operations in the Old Eureka mine near Sutter Creek, Amador County, California. During a two-year period (1938-1939), 85,517 tons of ore averaging 0.62 oz. gold per ton were mined and milled, as compared to the production of approximately 210,000 tons of 0.315-oz. gold ore during the preceding seven years. This is a repetition of mining history in the Mother Lode, where a period of prosperity has followed a long period of lean production. The location of this new ore in the hitherto unproductive hanging-wall greenstones and its mining and geological developments are most interesting. HISTORY OF THE OLD EUREKA MINE The Old Eureka mine, also known as the Hayward, Eureka, Hetty Green and Amador Consolidated, is in the most productive 10-mile length of the 120-mile long Mother Lode of California. The mine was first opened in 1852 with operations more or less continuous for the next 30 years. Production during this period amounted to $12,000,000 from an ore shoot 500 ft. long, which bottomed 1700 ft. below the surface. The shaft was continued as a prospect to 2065 ft. on the incline, where work was stopped in 1881. The mine was sold in 1916 by Hetty Green and the shaft deepened to the 3500-ft. level (3212 ft. vertically) by the new owners. Drifts were run on the 1700, 2100, 3000 and 3500-ft. levels, together with approximately 1500 ft. of crosscuts. No ore was found and work was abandoned in 1921. The present owners, the Central Eureka Mining Co., purchased the mine in 1924 after threatened litigation over rights to the rich ore shoot being mined from the lower levels of the Central Eureka mine on the south. Rehabilitation of the shaft commenced in 1926 and in 1930 mining on the old 2100-ft. level was started. While efforts of the previous owners had been directed for the most part toward the area south of the Old Eureka shaft and adjacent to the productive Central Eureka mine, the present owners started drifting northward on the old 2100-ft. level. DEVELOPMENT of the lime industry- in Ste. Genevieve County began in a crude way in 1840. According to information furnished by the Missouri Bureau of Geology, in the early days small vertical kilns built of stone were used, and wood was the fuel. Modern development began in 1904 when one company introduced steel shells lined with firebrick. Within a few years two more companies erected similar plants, and in 1925 a fourth company began operations. Thus there are today four lime companies at Ste. Genevieve, all operating at high capacity and with a gradually increasing production. GEOLOGY The limestone of Ste. Genevieve County, which has the chemical composition and purity required for lime burning, is the upper 80 or 90 ft. of Spergen formation. The Missouri Bureau of Geology, in its geological map of Ste. Genevieve County, gives the Spergen formation a total thickness of 160 ft., but only the upper portion is pure enough for lime burning, with an average raw-stone analysis of 98.7 per cent CaC03; 0.35 Si02; 0.3 R203; 0.35 MgCO3; 0.3 S03. The Spergen, one member of the Meramac group, Iowa series, of the Mississippian system, underlies an area approximately 12 miles long north and south, by 5 miles wide east and west (Fig. 1) in Ste. Genevieve County. The entire eastern two-thirds of Ste. Genevieve County is sedimentary, the formations dipping gently toward the east on an average grade of about 4 per cent, or 2 ½ º. Thus the outcrops of the various sedimentaries run approximately north and south. A line running west from Ste. Genevieve crosses the outcrops of the sedimentaries, ranging from the top of the Mississippian to the Ozarkian geological system in a space of 12 miles. Thus with the gentle dip of 2 ½ º the 160-ft. thickness of the Spergen formation stretches out in its outcrop so that it is approximately one mile

Although present electrolytic zinc manufacturing processes are aimed at the direct wet process recovery of the metal, and, with this end in view, several industrial scale patents have been applied for during the last few years, the object of this paper is to enhance the possible metallurgical interest in the conventional recovery of zinc and other metals from leaching residues. Therefore, its main end is the description and discussion of the recovery process of zinc, lead and cadmium from leaching residues. Fundamentally, the process consists of the following: Flotation processing to recover the non-roasted blende still contained in the residues. Pyrometallurgical processing of flotation tails in low-shaft furnaces (kilns) and open-flame rotating furnaces and the ensuing recovery of zinc, lead and cadmium as a mixture of their oxides through volatilization.

The furnace used for experimental work is shown in Fig. 1. One fireclay sagger, or pot, was set within another and the space between the two filled with Silox heat insulation. The hearth is a cast-iron plate with an imbedded ribbon of nichrome wire; this wire heater is connected to a potential regulator, which permits a very close voltage control. A mechanically driven arm is fitted with rabble blades so arranged that a uniformly thick ore bed may be maintained indefinitely. This arm is usually driven at about one revolution per minute but its speed of rotation can be varied as desired. Compressed air is led into the furnace through a meter, and it was found necessary to preheat the air in order to secure the definitely isothermal conditions sought. The manganese deposits of the Embree Iron Co., Embreeville, Tenn., are thought to be fairly typical and representative of the East Tennessee type of deposit, and so to warrent rather detailed description. The methods used by the Embree Iron Co. for prospecting and mining, and to a lesser extent for milling; should therefore be applicable to other East Tennessee manganese deposits, as yet' undeveloped. Early History and Discovery of Manganese Brown iron ore (limonite) was mined by the Embree Iron Co. at various times from 1890 to 1910. The early method was simply pick-and-shovel mining in open pits. Later hydraulic giants were used and sluice lines carried the ore down the mountain slopes to log washers.. During this phase of mining, manganese ore was discovered under the iron ore in some of the pits. In other areas oxidized zinc ore was found under the iron. It thus happened that the valuable zinc deposits were discovered in 1914. During the World War period, from 1914 to 1918, there was sporadic prospecting for manganese ore among the abandoned iron workings, but the main activity then centered around the recently discovered lead and zinc deposits. It was not until 1934 that manganese mining began in earnest, under the supervision of R. D. Pritchett, Mine Superintendent. Geology of the Manganese Deposits United States Geological Survey Folios 151 (Roan Mountain) and 118 (Greeneville show that Bumpass Cove is a synclinal structure thrust faulted along the southeast flank, but with normal sequence of strata along the northwest flank. Fig, l. shows the areal geology of Bumpass Cove as taken from the folios superposed on the U.S.G.S. -T.V.A. 1/24,000 topographic maps of the Erwin and Telford 7 ½ minute sheets. The manganese mines occur near the contact of the unfaulted Shady dolomite and the Erwin quartzite. This contact zone is deeply weathered, with overburden averaging 40 to 60 ft. thick. The material overlying' the bedrock along this normal contact is a very tough, plastic clay, termed "buckfat" or "ocher" by the miners. It is not a true ocher, however, in the sense of having commercial value. The manganese deposits occur along this "ocher" band. Fig. 1 also shows how the manganese deposits occur along the broad topographic terrace between the 2100 and 2200-ft. contour lines. This terrace lies at the foot the Erwin quartz ridge. Apparently it is the topographic is expression of the deeply weathered zone along the Shady-Erwin contact.

The application of the camera as an adjunct to topographic mapping began practically with its invention, and it has been employed with varying success since that time. With the exception of the camera to be described, the plate-camera has been universally used in this work, thus giving a projection of the area photographed on a flat surface. From such projections or photographs, by the rules of geometry and of perspective, points defining topographic features and seen from at least two camera-stations may be projected upon a ground-plane—the map.' In 1904 I employed the plate-camera for this purpose in Alaska, but found that the labor necessary to plot the maps, even in a general way, was long and tedious. In 1905 a small Eastman panoramic camera was fitted with spirit-levels, a sight-alidade and a transparent scale, introduced inside the camera to register the degree-points in the sky-line of the film-negative ; also, arrows to indicate the horizon-line. This was, on the whole, successful; but the details in the topography were not brought out in the views with sufficient clearness, aid the photographs were too small. These difficulties were overcome by obtaining a larger and more carefully constructed instrument, which was satisfactorily employed in the field during the year 1906. A panoramic view is made up of an integral number of perspective views upon flat surfaces, and logically is the most accurate and direct means to obtain an impression of a field of * Published by permission of the Director of the U. THERE is today no proven continuous mining machine that can be used under all the varying conditions found in most bituminous coal mines. During the last five years, however, both the machines and methods of using them have been improved. Coal operators can now exercise a fair degree of selectivity, except those who must struggle with thick and hard partings and operate in seams less than 40 in. thick. It must be realized, then, that more than one type of continuous miner may be used advantageously in the same coal mine. Although this appears to violate the standardization generally sought after, the gain can more than offset added maintenance and, to a lesser degree, operating problems.

The spectral reflectivity of zirconium in light of 441 to 668 nanometers (nm) wavelengths and air immersion has been determined. Bireflectance and apparent-angle -of-rotation measurements show zirconium to be optically isotropic when examined in light of approximately 484 nm wavelength. There is a direct relationship between bireflectance and the tilt of the basal pole of zirconium from the surface normal. This relationship allows the determination of the spatial orientation of the basal pole of an individual single crystal within a coarse-grained poly crystalline section to within± 2 to 3 deg for angles of basal pole tilt from 0 to 90 deg. In recent years considerable attention has been given to the quantitative determination of optical properties of opaque minerals by use of vertically incident, plane-polarized light. In particular, Cameron' and Cameron et a1.2 have developed criteria for the identification of a large number of anisotropic ore minerals based upon measurement of the apparent angle of rotation and the ellipticity or phase difference of the reflected light. It was shown by Larson and Pickle-simer3 that apparent-angle-of-rotation measurements may also be used to determine crystallographic orientations of grains of noncubic metals. In particular, it was shown that the basa.1 pole orientation in space of zirconium grains can be determined to ±3 deg for those grains with basal pole tilts of 10 to 90 deg from the plane of the section. Another, even more widely studied, optical property is reflectivity. cameron4 has commented upon measurement of the reflectance of plane-polarized, vertically incident light and Bowie and Taylor5 have made such measurements an integral part of their system of ore-mineral identification. Leow6 has reported on the spectral reflectivity of molybdenite and has used reflectivity values to calculate refractive indices and absorption coefficients. Cameron7 has made use of reflectivity values to ascertain aniso-tropic ore mineral symmetry and Piller and v. Gehlen8 have evaluated sources and importance of errors in reflectivity measurements as applied to calculation of optical constants. cambon9 has shown that reflectivity measurements using vertically incident, plane-polarized light are useful in the investigation of metals and in the identification of phases present in alloys. Bronson10 has made preliminary measurements on the optical anisotropy of beryIlium and Mott and Haines11 have published qualitative data on the intensity of light reflected from sections of bismuth, tin, and aluminum when these metals are microscopically examined under crossed polarizing plates. Koritnig12 has correlated the reflectivity of homogeneous solid solutions with their chemical compositions. From the above work and investigations in progress by this author, it is apparent that accurately determined values for the reflectance of vertically incident, plane-polarized monochromatic light from carefully polished surfaces of noncubic metals can prove useful in identification, composition determinations, and crystallographic orientation applications. Finally, reflectivity values, when measured in two media of differing refraction index and related to standards whose spectral reflectivities in these media are known, can be used to calculate optical constants such as refractive index and absorption coefficient. These constants may prove of use to those concerned with problems of electron band configuration. This paper reports the spectral reflectivity of zirconium measured in light of 441 to 668 nanometers (nm) wavelengths and air immersion. It also gives maximum bireflectance values for a prism section of zirconium in these wavelengths and shows how bire-flectance may be used to determine the crystallographic orientation of zirconium single crystals. Because of the lack of information on the reflectivities of the standards in oil immersion, no attempt is made to calculate the refractive indices or absorption coefficients although it is recognized that such values may be of fundamental importance. METHOD Single crystals of zirconium were cut by electro-discharge machining from a single-crystal rod grown from iodide bar by an electron-beam zone-melting process.13 The crystal sections were mounted in cold-setting epoxy resin and mechanically polished to a plane, uniform, bright surface. Each crystal was then chemically polished in a 26/26/43/5 mixture (by vol) of water, nitric, lactic, and hydrofluoric acids to remove the mechanically damaged and smeared surface layer. Final polish was obtained by electropolishing at 30 v in a bath of methyl alcohol and perchloric acid (98/2 by vol) at -70oc.14 Reflectivity measurements were made using a photometer system designed and developed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and described in detail by Larson.15 Briefly, the reflectivity measuring system consists of a reflecting microscope; a double-beam, null-balancing photometer array; a mechanically driven microscope stage; and a direct X-Y readout of the reflectivity of the specimen relative to its orientation on the microscope stage. The measuring photometer receives its signal from the specimen through a slotted Wright occular placed on top of the photovisual head of the microscope. The reference photometer receives light through a flexible glass "light pipe" from a mirror in the reflecting system of the microscope. Monochromatic light is attained through use of interference filters (15-nm half-peak width pass bands) placed in front of a stabilized Vickers 12 v, 100 w, tungsten-filament, quartz-iodide lamp.

The relative temperature distribution within a coke oven and among the ovens in a battery can be obtained automatically for the operator's guidance by sighting a total-radiation pyrometer on the face of the coke as it is pushed out, and recording the surface temperature. Keeping the instrument clean and keeping its view of the coke unobstructed by smoke and dust are the principal problems. Typical records from three plants are presented in this paper, showing that the temperature patterns are reproducible. Development OF Method The method of coke pyrometry described in this paper was introduced in 1936 by E. A. Lee, then Assistant Superintendent, now Superintendent, of the Coke Plant at Lorain Works, National Tube Co., Lorain, Ohio. At the request of the Coke Committee of the United States Steel Corporation, the Research Laboratory of the Corporation undertook to adapt the method to the somewhat different conditions met with at the Gary Works of the Carnegie-Illinois Steel Corporation, Gary, Ind., and at the Clairton Works of the same Corporation at Clairton, Pa. This work was done in cooperation with the Leeds and Northrup Co. of Philadelphia and later with the Brown Instrument Co. Division of Minneapolis-Honeywell Regulator Co., Philadelphia. We of the Research Laboratory wish to express our appreci- ation of the courtesies extended by Mr. Lee, by A. N. Cole, Superintendent of the Gary coke plant, and by D. P. Finney, Assistant General Superintendent in charge of coke-plant operations at Clairton. We are also indebted to the instrument companies for the loan of a part of the equipment. At Gary and Clairton the instruments were installed and various experiments were made by J. W. Bain, of the Research Laboratory of the United States Steel Corporation. Pyrometry of Coke The coke inside a by-product oven is almost completely inaccessible to pyro-metric instruments. The temperature in the walls can conceivably be measured with thermocouples, but the atmosphere is usually strongly reducing, a condition well known to be destructive to the accuracy of the customary high-temperature couples. In some plants, periodic readings are taken with an optical pyrometer sighted into the top of the combustion flues. This is a useful measure for safety and general control, as it tends to prevent the damage that would result from overheating of the ovens. It does not, however, tell much about the temperature of the coke itself, because of the continually changing gradient in the wall between the coke and the combustion chamber. The best indication of the temperature of the coke itself must therefore be obtained by observation of the product as it is pushed out of the oven. The human eye is very sensitive to variations in brightness of a surface, and particularly to differences in brightness over a continuous hot surface.

DIATOMS are microscopic aquatic plants of the order Bacillariaceae. They are unicellular plants with skeletons made up of amorphous opaline silica. The skeletons show highly ornate, complicated geometrical designs. Diatoms live in water virtually everywhere. They are found in clean sea water, brackish water, and fresh-water lakes and ponds. When conditions are right, diatoms propagate by subdivision in huge numbers. Alkalinity, temperature, and the presence of high concentrations of silica in the water largely control diatom life. When the diatoms die the skeletons drop to the bottom of their habitat to form oozes of vary-ing thicknesses. DIATOMITES Diatomite, or diatomaceous earth, is composed essentially of the siliceous remains of the diatoms, although other organic skeletons are also present, especially in sea-water deposits where radiolaria, sponges and silico-flagellates are common. Impurities are generally carbonaceous material, fine-grained silt, volcanic ash and dust, and occasional coarse grains of sand. Diatomites are marine, brackish, or fresh-water, depending upon types of diatoms and their method of deposition.

The relative temperature distribution within a coke oven and among the ovens in a battery can be obtained automatically for the operator's guidance by sighting a total-radiation pyrometer on the face of the coke as it is pushed out, and recording the surface temperature. Keeping the instrument clean and keeping its view of the coke unobstructed by smoke and dust are the principal problems. Typical records from three plants are presented in this paper, showing that the temperature patterns are reproducible. Development OF Method The method of coke pyrometry described in this paper was introduced in 1936 by E. A. Lee, then Assistant Superintendent, now Superintendent, of the Coke Plant at Lorain Works, National Tube Co., Lorain, Ohio. At the request of the Coke Committee of the United States Steel Corporation, the Research Laboratory of the Corporation undertook to adapt the method to the somewhat different conditions met with at the Gary Works of the Carnegie-Illinois Steel Corporation, Gary, Ind., and at the Clairton Works of the same Corporation at Clairton, Pa. This work was done in cooperation with the Leeds and Northrup Co. of Philadelphia and later with the Brown Instrument Co. Division of Minneapolis-Honeywell Regulator Co., Philadelphia. We of the Research Laboratory wish to express our appreci- ation of the courtesies extended by Mr. Lee, by A. N. Cole, Superintendent of the Gary coke plant, and by D. P. Finney, Assistant General Superintendent in charge of coke-plant operations at Clairton. We are also indebted to the instrument companies for the loan of a part of the equipment. At Gary and Clairton the instruments were installed and various experiments were made by J. W. Bain, of the Research Laboratory of the United States Steel Corporation. Pyrometry of Coke The coke inside a by-product oven is almost completely inaccessible to pyro-metric instruments. The temperature in the walls can conceivably be measured with thermocouples, but the atmosphere is usually strongly reducing, a condition well known to be destructive to the accuracy of the customary high-temperature couples. In some plants, periodic readings are taken with an optical pyrometer sighted into the top of the combustion flues. This is a useful measure for safety and general control, as it tends to prevent the damage that would result from overheating of the ovens. It does not, however, tell much about the temperature of the coke itself, because of the continually changing gradient in the wall between the coke and the combustion chamber. The best indication of the temperature of the coke itself must therefore be obtained by observation of the product as it is pushed out of the oven. The human eye is very sensitive to variations in brightness of a surface, and particularly to differences in brightness over a continuous hot surface.

IN order to understand more fully the complexities of the reactions occurring between the liquid steel and the slag in the basic open-hearth steelmaking furnace, investigations in this country and abroad have turned to laboratory equilibrium studies. This paper is one of a series of reports on investigations being conducted at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The experimental work was completed early in 1942. The slag systems found in the basic open hearth are very complex, being made up of at least eight major components and as many others whose effect might be classified as minor. The first two papers of the series, by Fetters and Chipman,l,2 as well as the paper by Taylor and Chipman,3 dealt with the simplest possible slag system that would resemble those found in the basic open hearth-the slag system consisting of CaO-MgO-SiO2-FeO. (Taylor's rotating induction furnace eliminated the necessity of contamination of the slag by MgO.) Having arrived at some reasonable conclusions regarding the physical chemistry of the reactions between molten iron and the simple slags at equilibrium, the next step was to investigate more complex slag systems. The major purpose of the present investigation was to determine what factors control the distribution of phosphorus between molten iron and the more complex basic slags at equilibrium, and to what extent these factors are influential. The slags used contained CaO, MgO, Si02, FeO, Fe203, P205, MnO, A1203 and CaF2, but not all of the slag samples contained all of these components at one time. REVIEW OF LITERATURE Although a number of interesting papers have been published on the subject of dephosphorization of an iron bath, there are as yet no results from laboratory studies that give thoroughly reliable information on the dephosphorization reaction. Even for the supposedly simple Fe-O-P system involving iron-phosphorus melts and iron oxide-iron phosphate slags, the experimental results are contradictory and no formulas have been established that adequately fit the equilibrium conditions. The Fe-O-P system has been studied by Schackmann and Brings4' von Samson-Himmelstjerna,5 Oelsen and Maetz,6 Bischof and Maurer,7 Diepschlag and Schürmann,8 and Herty,9 and the results of their investigations appear in Table I. PREPARATION CONTROL IN UNDERGROUND MINING Selective Mining According to district Depending upon the particular geographic loca- tion or seam characteristics, modern raw coal preparation practices can be used to obtain improved product quality and uniformity. Nevertheless, certain coal markets may require only marginal quality while others may require very high quality, and these objectives may be sought by commencing the preparation of coal underground at the "working face." Under- ground preparation involves choosing those portions of the seam which can be cleaned to satisfy predetermined market requirements involving ( 1 ) maintenance of uniformity in chemical quality, (2) elimination of removable impurities, (3) control of sizes and size ratios, and (4) control of moisture. The methods employed to attain these objectives vary widely with the (1 ) seam under development, (2) mining equipment available, and (3) changing trends in the consuming markets. When a mining property is opened and development progresses from one section to another, the (1) petrography of the coal in the seam does not remain uniform, (2) character of roof and floor are subject to change, and (3) character and prevalence of mineral impurities are subject to considerable variation. The quality of coal shipped to market from any mine depends upon intelligent foresight, planning, execution, and supervision. Mining becomes a highly technical art. The quality of coal as determined by chemical and petrographic analysis is without question one of the most important considerations in the development and life of any coal-mining property. Variations in such proper- ties as volatile matter, ash, sulfur, Btu content, and petrography are of considerable interest, and to a limited extent so are such properties as phosphorous content, free swelling index, plasticity, hardness, pressure formation during coking, and ash composition. The maximum and minimum specifications of these characteristics as established by competitive market conditions place definite limits on the marketability of a coal.
