The objective of delineation drilling is to provide a data base for the tonnage and grade estimates required to evaluate the economics of mine development. As drilling information is accumulated, geological risk is reduced and more reliable estimates of tonnage and grade are obtained. Investment in drilling is justified by the benefits which result from improving the reliability of the economic criteria evaluated. These benefits are subject to diminishing returns, i.e. as drilling information is accumulated the reliability of the economic criteria evaluated is improved but at a decreasing rate. At the same time, costs are incurred -- the direct investment cost associated with additional drilling and the time cost of delaying possible production revenues. The economic sampling limit is de- fined by the point at which the marginal benefits from drilling investment just balance the marginal costs. The paper describes the formulation of an economic model to optimize investment in delineation drilling. The model is applied to a simulated mineral deposit to illustrate the economic effects of a sequential drilling program.

Purification of solutions can involve various treatment methods. In the normal sequence of metals recovery by hydrometallurgy, the ore is initially prepared for leaching by grinding to the desired optimum mesh size as dictated by the leaching parameters. Following leaching and liquids- solids separation, the resultant solution is ready for purification. The use, or introduction of solvent extraction into a plant, can be either a major or a minor part of the metal recovery process as shown by the following list where solvent extraction is normally considered: a) recovery of a metal by a simple leaching of the broken ore, e.g., copper from dump leaching where there are only the three main steps of leaching, solvent extraction, and electrowinning (1);

The problem considered in this paper is as follows: An arbitrary horizontally stratified area is given. The electrical properties of this area are characterized by a function p(z) (Fig. I), which shows the relationship between resistivity p of the soil and the depth z. For such general case the apparent resistivity p* will be computed, by earth-resistivity measurements carried out by any given configuration of electrodes. General solutions of this problem appear to be very important for interpretation of field results of resistivity measurements, concerning structural investigations. Such solutions have been given by many authors for the special case of a finite number of homogeneous layers (Fig. 2)lV4 as well as for the more general case of continuously ranging resistivities.5-8

Extensive research, ,development and plant application work has been done on automatic control systems for wet grinding and sulphide flotation circuits during the past twenty years. The result is that there is a good understanding of the process mechanisms, the effects which changes in different variables have on these processes, the procedure for design of control systems to satisfy particular objectives and the problems in the implementation of control systems. There is also an appreciation of the problems which are still to be solved. These are reviewed briefly in this paper. Other processes used for the beneficiation of fine particles have been studied in lesser detail. The control of dry grinding, coal flotation and gravity separation are mentioned briefly in this paper.

This paper is partially based on a comprehensive ground control investigation that was conducted by Harza Engineering Company under a contract from the Bureau of Mines. This investigation required in- stalling several types of ground movement indicating devices on the surface and in the mine. The major instrumentation systems consisted of hydraulic borehole pressure cells, multi-point extensometers, in- clinometers, convergence indicators, Jack pressure recorders time domain reflectometers, and a 200 station subsidence network. The investigation demonstrated the versatility of the system. We were able to install pressure cell s to a depth of over 200 feet in the coal bed and we were successful in installing 10 pen mechanical recorders to monitor differential strata movement. In this paper, we have briefly discussed data from 18 borehole pres- sure cells, two time domain reflectometer cables and four subsidence lines. The data collected showed that the front and rear abutment pressures were approximate1 y 1000 feet (304.81~1) to 1200 feet (356.76111) from the active face. The peak pressure was about 4 times the over- burden pressure.

A brief review of the role of laboratory testing for characterization of host rocks for nuclear waste repositories is presented. Micro-and macro-scopic deformation mechanisms are discussed and constitutive laws being considered are reviewed. More information is available for rocksalt under expected repository conditions and, consequently, it receives more attention in our review. A brief comparison is made between the creep and constant strain-rate tests leading to a hypothesis that there may be systematic differences between steady-state conditions developed by the two test types. This difference is explained by considering specific power dissipated and work done on the sample. The hypothesis is tested against data for wet Westerly granite. In conclusion, progress has been made during the past five years but research and development should continue.

The Ebliden Company, originally entering the field of mining with the workings of the gold-copper-arsenic deposit at Ebliden, commenced zinc benificiation at Kristineberg in 1940 and lead mining at Laisvall in 1943. During the three last decades a number of mines has been developed for production, Today the Mining Division of BOLIDEN produces ore from 22 mines, operates 7 ore dressing plants and produces: [ ] Over two thirds of the lead contents are treated in the lead smelter of the company at Ri6nnskarsverken. The other part of it is sold abroad. The zinc content of the lead concentrates is recovered from the lead smelter at Ri6nnskarsverken. The zinc concentrates are shipped abroad to European smelters in Norway and Germany. Today BOLIDEN has its plants in the northern and the middle parts of Sweden. Figure 1. Straight lead ore, lead-zinc ores, lead-zinc-copper bearing ores and complex lead-zinc-copper and pyrite ores are treated in local and central plants with a capacity of 8.600 tpd. BOLIDEN also operates the low grade copper ore at Aitik at 7.000 tpd.

An open pit rock structure usually contains geological planes of weakness. They are formed by joints, faults, bedding planes, fractures, and cleavages. Rock slope failures often occur in the form of sliding of rock blocks along a plane or several planes. Such a rock block has three- dimensional geometry, and consequently a vector method of analysis has been found useful in evaluating its stabi1ity.l-3 Rock blocks of a tetrahedral shape with one free surface have been analyzed by Londe.3 Rock blocks formed by sets of parallel joints have been analyzed by Wittke.1,2 The present chapter presents the analysis of rock blocks formed by planes of weakness of arbitrary orientation, and of three-dimensional geometry. A plane of weakness is represented by its dip and strike in vector form and is reduced to the form of a linear equation. The geometry of the rock block is defined by solving the linear equations. The geometric characteristics of a rock block are based on triangles and tetrahedrons. By this treatment, the three-dimensional geometry is simplified and the number of calculations of forces and moments is reduced. Methods of finding the geometric characteristics are presented, along with equations for calculating the resultant forces and moments and the factor of safety. BASIC ASSUMPTIONS The following assumptions are used : The solid part of the rock mass is much stronger than the rock mass at the plane of weakness and the rock mass will only fail along planes of weakness.

THE Liberty tunnels extend through a very steep hill in Pittsburgh (locally called Mount Washington) for a distance of slightly over a mile. A detailed description of the smelting and refining operations of the Amax-Homestake Lead Toller's smelter at Buick, Missouri. This is one of two completely new lead smelting and refining operations to go into operation in the United States in over forty years. Incorporated into the operation are the new methods and equipment which have been developed and lend themselves to the particular metallurgy of this plant. The text, as well as the statistical data presented, represent actual current practice after 22 months of operation, and although the metallurgy is considered to be relatively simple, several metallurgical problems unique to Missouri concentrates are discussed.

IN connection with its investigations of the blast'-furnace process, the Bureau of Mines, in coöperation with the Minnesota School of Mines Experiment Station, developed a 6-ton experimental furnace. Such a furnace was needed to determine the feasibility of producing ferromanganese from Minnesota manganiferous iron ores, a problem of national importance because of the present need for manganese in the steel industry and our small reserves of ferro-grade ores. Furnace operators are reluctant to use new or untried raw materials or to make decided innovations in practice on account of the financial hazard of experimenting with full-scale equipment. A small furnace which can be operated at a relatively low cost is particularly adapted for testing new, raw materials and for determining the feasibility of decided innovations in practice. Laboratory experiments, plus whatever information may be available, are valuable but often do not indicate the net result of changes in an operation involving a large number of interrelated variables. From time to time the coöperation of the Bureau of Mines is solicited in connection with problems involving departures from normal procedure. Under these circumstances some sort of a practical demonstration is a desirable forerunner to full-scale operations which appear feasible after small-scale tests.

In view of the great importance of accurate knowledge respecting the chemistry of iron and steel, as related to their physical properties, I come before you with a paper showing the great mass of work which has been heretofore done on the subject. I have tabulated the more important data I bring at this time, so as to draw out the results clearly. This information is accessible to all who will seek for it. I have made it the basis of my own practice throughout, and such knowledge is undoubtedly the only foundation for the successful practice of metallurgy. As is well known the ordnance corps of our army, after 1841, made exhaustive experiments on the properties of cast-iron. The investigations were undertaken in order to obtain necessary information on the reorganization of the corps. I wish to call your attention to the results obtained by a comparison of the chemical and physical properties of cast-iron for guns, to describe certain characteristic peculiarities of steel, and to give a brief history of the chemical work relating to carbon in iron. An experimental study is discussed of the state of strain, deformation and fracture around lined and unlined cylindrical cavities in rock under biaxial compressive static loading. The specimens were limestone plates 36 in. high, 24 in. wide and 3 in. thick with a 4 in. diameter hole unlined or lined with hydrostone and aluminum liners. The ratio of horizontal to vertical applied stress was one-third. Experimental techniques used were strain gages, differential transformers and photoelastic coatings. Strain distributions were plotted along the horizontal axis of symmetry for various levels of applied stress. The agreement with theory was good at low stress levels but appreciable deviations occurred at higher levels and near the hole. The experimental strain concentration factor was nearly the same, slightly higher and appreciably higher than the theoretical value for the hydrostone-lined, unlined and aluminum-lined specimens, respectively. Failure modes were splitting along a vertical plane for the unlined and hydrostone-fined specimens, compressive (shear) failure for one unlined specimen and splitting with radial cracking for the aluminum-lined specimen. In the latter, a maximum tensile stress of more than three times the uniaxial tensile strength existed at the interface with the liner at the time of fracture,
